This article covers weather in July in Bali including average temperatures and rainfall as well as travel tips on what to do, places to go, and what to wear in July.

Bali Weather in July: Overview

The best places to visit in bali in july, crowds and costs in july, what to wear in july.

  • Daily temperature range : 22–31°C (73–88°F)
  • Rainfall : 6 cm (2 inches)
  • Rainy days : 4
  • Sunshine hours/day : 10
  • Ocean temperature : 27°C (81°F)
  • Humidity : 60%

July is one of the driest months in Bali and one of the best months for natural beauty and enjoyment. There is a lot less (ocean) pollution in the dry season. The beaches and water are a lot cleaner.

Being in the southern hemisphere winter, July is appreciably cooler than in May. Both the water and the air are cooler. But because of 10 hours of bright sun , it still feels hot during the day. The temperatures are cool at night especially in the mountains. July is better than May for people who appreciate cooler weather. The average daily maximum is 31°C (88°F), and the average nightly minimum is a comfortable 22°C (73°F). The sea is comfortable for just about everyone. This is perfect beach weather , but be careful of sunburn.

Bali can expect an average of 4 days of light/moderate rain in July. If it rains, it usually falls for a few hours in the later afternoon or evening. So, you could plan your activities earlier and miss the rain. July is one of the windier months, so you may be thankful for the refreshing evening breezes.

July is one of the best months for visiting Bali . The beaches and the seas are cleaner, and the bright sunshine and hot temperatures encourage people to go to the beaches and do watersports. Some people like to hike and stay in the mountains where it is cooler. July's dry weather is far better than the rainy season weather for walking to the tops of the volcanoes.

You could also enjoy visiting Bali's nearby islands and have adventurous outdoor activities including surfing, diving, and hiking.

However, Bali receives the most visitors during July and August, so you might appreciate going to the less-traveled highlights of the island or going off Bali to the less-visited nearby islands.

1. Stay at Seminyak for Sun and Surf

Seminyak has a combination of luxury resorts and surfing that many tourists appreciate. It is close to the main airport, so getting there is easy. Seminyak Beach is good for lounging, surfing, family time, water sports, and honeymoons. It is particularly known for watersports such as surfing, parasailing, and waterskiing.

Seminyak is about 3 km (2 miles) north of more-crowded Kuta and further from the city center. The waves are bigger than those at Kuta, so more experienced surfers surf there.

The hotels along the beach make are especially suitable for honeymooners and seniors. The beach is 8 km (5 miles) long, and sections of it are privately owned by luxury hotels. You can enjoy fine dining in the resorts and shop.

Transportation : Seminyak is about 12 minutes by road from Denpasar Airport (taxi fares are about 10 USD).

2. Enjoy the Highlands around Ubud

When it is hot and crowded at the beaches, you could enjoy cooler temperatures, less humidity, and green vegetation around Ubud. You could hike in cooler, higher areas around Ubud and enjoy fine dining and the street markets. There is a wide range of hotels in Bali's culture hub.

Nearby Tegallalang is one of the best terraced field areas of Bali and is known for its steep jungled beauty. Ubud is at an elevation of 600 meters (2,000 feet). Nearby are waterfalls and a popular market area for food and shopping called Gianyar Night Market (see below). You could take children to Bali Bird Sanctuary and to Monkey Forest that has about 600 monkeys.

For more about Tegallalang, read The Top Bali Rice Terraces: Which to Visit

Transport : Ubud is about 45 minutes by road from Denpasar Airport (taxi fares are about 25 to 33 USD).

3. Dive, Snorkel, Hike, and Relax at the Beaches of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is one of the three little islands southwest of Bali that are tourist highlights. It is bigger than Nusa Lembongan and receives less tourists.

Nusa Penida is a wildlife refuge area for both sealife and life on the island, so you could go there for adventure and nature. You can see large and unusual sea creatures such as turtles and manta rays. There are lovely white beaches for relaxation too.

Where to stay : Simple guesthouses provide most of the lodging. Indonesian food is served at the local warungs (Indonesian restaurants). You can enjoy plenty of seafood and Balinese meals.

Transportation : Speedboats ferry travelers to and from Bali in about 30 or 40 minutes.

4. Go to Gianyar Night Market

If you are in the Ubud area, you could enjoy a meal at dusk at the Gianyar night market. It is known for its Balinesian and international food and drink at low prices. A whole meal including ice tea may cost 35,000 IDR (2.50 USD).

There are numerous stalls that sell everything from pets to cheap electronics.

Location : The market is at Jalan Ngurah Rai in Gianyar about 11 km (7 miles) from Ubud. It closes about 10:00 pm, but it is open all day. So you could shop during the day as well and have breakfast or lunch there.

5. Hike Mount Agung

Mount Agung is a challenge for hikers. It is the highest mountain in Bali with an elevation of 3,031 meters (9,944 feet). The cone is very steep, but you might enjoy walking on the lower slopes.

There are three stages for the hike up. The first stage is through forest on a dirt path. It is physically demanding. The second stage is scrambling on boulders. The third stage is the most dangerous and steepest . It is so steep that people have to climb up on their hands and knees.

People might choose just to enjoy the hike through the jungle to the steep slope and stop at that point. There are 3 points of entry, and depending on where you enter, the walk could take from 3 to 7 hours long.

As it would be particularly dangerous on wet slopes, and less pleasant when colder, it is best to ascend in the driest and warmest months such as July. Many people have altitude sickness at the top if they are not used to the altitude.

Transport : Road travel from Denpasar Airport to Mount Agung takes about 75 to 90 minutes (a 40–55 USD taxi fare).

The busiest travel months of the year are July and August. The number of international tourists in July might be 50% or 60% more than in May. Australians especially like to take a Bali vacation in July during their winter season.

However, as of 2022, the number of tourists in Bali is still lower than 2019. The hotels and guesthouses that were built for the travel boom are less crowded now than before 2020. The beaches are less crowded too.

July is one of the sunniest months with 10 hours of sunshine a day . So, to protect yourself from solar radiation, it is important to bring light, cool, and quick-drying clothing that covers your skin. You might need an umbrella to provide shelter from the sun and any showers. Sandals and cool, breathable footwear are generally recommended.

Insect repellent might be required in the evenings especially in the rural areas.

Wear strong comfortable trainers or light hiking boots to support your feet and ankles when you go hiking in the rice terraces and on the volcanoes.

The Best Time to Visit Bali for Every Activity

Bali seasons, explained — these are the best times to visit the island, whether you're coming for the beaches, hiking, or festivals.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Bali is a magical destination with so much to offer, from the jungle surrounding Ubud (largely considered Bali's cultural center) to the beaches lining its southern shore.

You can make your Bali vacation whatever you want it to be — a tour of the island's many temples, a spiritual journey to learn more about Hinduism, a yoga retreat, a luxury hotel immersion, a hiking adventure, or a stop on a longer trip around Indonesia. You might even want to visit Bali specifically for one of the many festivals or spiritual celebrations hosted each year.

Bali has a tropical climate with average temperatures hovering between around 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Its two seasons are defined as dry (April to October) and wet (November to March). Here's a general breakdown of Bali's tourist seasons:

  • High Seasons:  June to August and November to December
  • Shoulder Seasons:  April to May and September to October
  • Low Season:  January to March

Below, we've mapped out the best times to go to Bali, depending on how you want to spend your vacation.

Michela Buttignol/Travel+Leisure

Best Times to Visit Bali for Smaller Crowds

January to March is Bali's true off-season. These months can be humid and rainy, which means you won't find crowds in search of perfect beach weather and diving conditions. And because you'll also be avoiding the biggest holiday months (November and December), you'll find the island to be calm and populated by locals and expats.

While the rain brings mosquitos and may take activities like diving and surfing off the table, it's not a deal-breaker if you're in Bali to tour temples, practice yoga, and find pure relaxation. In fact, you might find that the peaceful rain in the Ubud forest adds to the overall serenity of your experience. The jungle and rice paddies thrive in this season — and the magnificent green color and sprouting vegetation are worth seeing.

Best Times to Visit Bali for Good Weather

Sunseekers should time their trip with Bali's dry season, which runs from April to October. During this period, humidity and rain decrease, creating ideal conditions for visiting beaches, surfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. It still rains during these months, especially in April, May, and October, but showers are usually short and followed by clear skies. May is one of the hottest months, with an average high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

For the best weather, visit during July and August, the peak of the dry season. With less humidity, these months feel cooler, with an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so they're perfect for enjoying a mix of active adventures and beach time. Those coming to Bali to catch some legendary waves should also aim to visit during the dry season, with June to August bringing larger swells to the main surf spots along the southwest coast.

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

Best Times to Visit Bali for Lower Prices

The busiest and most expensive time in Bali is during the dry season, with hotel prices peaking between June and September. Tourism also sees a boost during the holidays, so you can expect higher hotel prices in November and December.

The most affordable time to visit Bali is from January through March, the rainy-season months that fall outside of the festive season. Hotel prices during this time tend to be lower due to the lack of demand, making it possible to score ocean-view rooms or multi-bedroom villas for a fraction of the price you would pay during the dry season. You may also find deals during the quiet shoulder season months, April and October.

Best Months for Hiking in Bali

If you're traveling to Bali specifically to hike, visiting between April and October is ideal, as the rainy season can cause trails to be muddy and slippery. For those planning to do some waterfall hikes, the best time to visit Bali is in April, May, and June, when the cascades are strong following the wet season, and the days are more likely to be sunny. Hikers who rent motorbikes will also have an easier time zipping around the island during the dry season since the roads can become treacherous in the rain.

Best Time to Hike Mount Batur

Mount Batur is perhaps the most iconic Bali hike. Typically, you'll book through a tour company that will pick you up from your hotel at about 2 a.m. for the 1,717-meter (5,633-foot) trek. You'll summit the active volcano as the sun rises, and depending on your guide, you may even be treated to eggs boiled in the volcanic steam at the top of Mount Batur. The two-hour hike to the summit is best done between May and September to ensure dry weather and clear views.

Best Times to Visit Bali for Festivals

One of the most iconic annual events in Bali is the Bali Arts Festival, which occurs in June and July. Indonesian Independence Day (or Hari Merdeka) falls on August 17 and is commemorated with parades and outdoor celebrations. Keep in mind that if you're traveling for a Hindu celebration, Balinese Hindus often celebrate different holidays than Hindus in India. Galungan, for example, is an important 10-day celebration of the triumph of good over evil (dharma over adharma) that occurs every 210 days according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar. Nyepi, a day of silence, fasting, and meditation before the New Year, typically takes place in March.

Best Months to Visit the Beach in Bali

May to September is the best time to visit Bali for a classic beach vacation. Days tend to be hot, sunny, and dry, creating ideal conditions for snorkeling, diving, and other water sports. However, the drawback of visiting Bali during this period is that most of these months fall within the peak season. The temples, beaches, hotels, and yoga classes will be crowded, so it's likely you won't have as many opportunities to soak up that sweet Balinese serenity you're treated to in the low season.

Worst Times to Visit Bali

Of course, those looking for a quintessential Bali vacation with plenty of sunshine and outdoor activities will want to avoid the rainy season (especially during the wettest months, December and January). At this time of year, it's common to experience choppy seas, muddy trails, and afternoon storms, which can quite literally put a damper on your plans. However, travelers looking to spend their days practicing yoga, visiting temples, or enjoying cultural experiences indoors may prefer the quieter atmosphere.

Due to higher levels of precipitation, mosquitos can be particularly prolific in the rainy season and the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses (like dengue fever) increases accordingly. If you do plan to visit during the wet season, bug repellant is a must-have on your pack list — especially when hiking in the jungle. Some locals also drink lemongrass tea, which is believed to be a natural insect repellent.

Divergent Travelers

Best Time to Visit Bali: Month by Month Breakdown

Bali is one of the most popular islands in Southeast Asia, and deciding the best time to visit Bali is going to affect not only the weather you experience but also how many other tourists are there with you.

Like most of tropical Indonesia, Bali only really has two seasons throughout the year, the dry season and the wet season.

All year-round, it’s hot, and for many, Bali can be visited any time of the year, but between November and March, you can expect downpours most days during the wet season.

April to October is the dry season and you can expect larger crowds and higher prices but the weather will be perfect.

Often, the best time to visit Bali is a trade-off between the weather and the number of visitors.

To help you to plan your trip, here’s our guide on the best time to visit Bali.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Indonesia (Country Guide)

Table of Contents

Bali Dry Season

LIna Stock of Divergent Travelers enjoying a beach in Bali

The dry season is the best time to visit Bali when it comes to the weather because for half of the year you can expect beautiful clear skies and almost no rainfall.

The dry season in Bali runs from May to October, although this can vary each year. The peak months are the height of the Balinese winter, which is June, July, and August.

May in Bali

Mount Batur - Best time to visit Bali

May is the start of the official dry season in Bali, but you can still expect a mixed bag when it comes to the weather.

One year it could be raining all through May but the next it can be dry from as early as April.

If it does rain in May though it’s guaranteed to just be a few light showers, and this is the best time to visit before you hit the high season from June to August.

Prices will be lower in May and with the better weather, it’s a good time to start diving and snorkeling, as the water visibility clears up.

It’s getting cooler too and less humid, so a hike to the summit of Bali’s mysterious volcano, Mount Batur, can be a great activity in May, as you’ll miss the crowds and enjoy better conditions for hiking.

June in Bali

Uluwatu Temple Bali

June is the start of the high season in Bali, although it’s not quite as busy a month as July and August. The weather is likely to be perfect with temperatures averaging in the mid-twenties and humidity low.

You’ll have to be really unlucky to see even a light rain shower, so it’s a great time to hit up the beaches and make the most of the clear skies and sunshine.

Prices start to climb in June, but you’ll miss the worst of the high season which picks up towards the end of the month when the European summer holidays begin in earnest.

In June you should visit the more touristy attractions such as the famous temples in the south – Uluwatu for instance – or the increasingly popular Nusa Islands before the summer crowds make their appearance.

July in Bali

Beach in Bali, Indonesia

July is usually the busiest month to visit Bali, but for good reason, and that’s because you’ll be enjoying the best weather of the year.

But as well as enjoying sunny, clear skies and zero rain, you’ll be sharing the beaches and resorts with hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers. People flock here from Europe, America and more than anywhere else, from Australia.

Prices will be higher for flights and hotels, but if you do want to escape the crowds then head north.

This is a great time to experience a side of Bali that most miss, and by exploring the black sand beaches of Amed or the coast and jungle of Bali Barat National Park, you’ll see how the south of Bali was a few decades previously.

August in Bali

LIna Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog enjoying a luxury resort in Bali

Much like July, August is always super busy in Bali. The weather is again beautiful, with clear skies and sunny days, and it’s a great time for lounging on beaches and drinking cold Bintang Beers.

If you want to escape the holiday crowds though then plan a trip north, and visit the beautiful coastline in more rustic destinations such as Lovina or Amed, where tourism has only recently begun to develop.

There are great snorkeling and diving up north too, including some famous shipwrecks, and as it’s the height of the dry season the water will be beautifully clear.

September in Bali

Sunset with surfers in Kuta Bali

September can be the best time to visit Bali if you want a great mix of good weather and smaller crowds.

Things will still be busy and flights will be more expensive than the later shoulder season months. But you’ll save money compared to the true high season and have fewer people around when you explore touristy destinations such as Ubud, Kuta or the Nusa Islands.

October in Bali

Temple in Ubud Bali

October is a great shoulder season month, but the dry weather is coming to a close. There are more and more rainy days, but these can be unpredictable.

If you’re in Bali for two weeks, you’ll most likely have enough dry days to make the most of your visit.

Enjoy the south and the more traditional beach areas, get cultural in Ubud or escape to the north to see a wilder side of the island.

Bali Wet Season

Surfer in Bali

The wet season in Bali runs from November through to April, corresponding with the southern hemisphere summer and fall.

It’s tropical, and that means that while it does rain hard when it rains, showers and storms are brief but fierce.

The rainy season can be a great time to miss the crowds but give December and January a miss because these two months are still incredibly popular despite the wet weather.

November in Bali

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel blog at a luxury resort in Bali

November is when the rainy season starts in Bali, but just how much rain there will be, can vary.

You’ll have good odds of having lovely sunny days still, and it’s a great time to visit because you’ll miss the Christmas crowds who are just around the corner.

You can get wonderful deals on flights and hotels through November, and you’ll still be able to snorkel and dive before the water gets too cloudy from the rains.

It’s getting hotter, but take a trip to the summit of Mount Batur and you’ll be able to cool down after a challenging hike to the top of Bali’s iconic volcano.

December in Bali

Monkey of Monkey forest in Ubud Bali

December is usually the rainiest month of the year, and weather-wise, this really is not the best time to visit Bali.

The tourist crowds would beg to differ though because while you might get soaked, it’s also incredibly warm still.

That draws over the Christmas crowds seeking winter sun from Europe and North America , and it still brings over the Aussie crowds looking for a cheap getaway.

It’s a lively time to be in Bali, and it’s not a bad place at all to spend Christmas and New Year, but be prepared for high prices and lots of other travelers and tourists.

January in Bali

Boat on a beach in Bali

January can be just as busy as December and unfortunately, just as rainy. This is the height of the wet season, but again, it doesn’t put off the crowds.

If you do visit, then the southern beaches and classic resort areas are best avoided. Head north instead, and find a bit more peace and quiet in the lesser-visited parts of Bali.

February in Bali

Waterfall Bali

In February, the weather starts to cool down slightly and the rainy days begin to disappear, but it’s still very much the wet season.

It’s a great shoulder season month, right after the Christmas crowds go home, and you can enjoy many of Bali’s best sights with fewer people around.

Head to the waterfalls, as they will be in their element, and the jungle will be lush and green from all the rainfall over the last few months.

March in Bali

Shoulder season in Bali - Street with no travelers

March can be a wet month or it can be a dry month, the weather gods in Bali are unpredictable this time of the year.

It will be a quiet month on the tourism front though and that makes it the best time to visit Bali if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel.

The Christmas and New Year crowds are long gone, and the dry season tourists are a few months away.

You can get great deals on flights and resorts if you book in advance, and you’ll find that lots of beach areas in the south such as Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu are quieter.

This is Bali though, so if you’re here for the social aspects then there are always other travelers around to hang out with.

April in Bali

Ubud rice terraces in April

April is a great shoulder month, but be careful of the Easter Holidays in Australia or Europe, as Bali becomes a popular holiday break destination during this time of the year.

You could enjoy almost all sunny days or conversely it could also rain a lot, but that’s the gamble in April as the rainy season draws to a close.

It’s the tail end of the wet season though and Bali will be blooming, making this a great month to visit the waterfalls and the rice paddies before they start to dry out again.

Visit Ubud for cultural festivals and then hike through the rice terraces nearby.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Bali?

  • September 15, 2021

Travelling to Bali is at the top of people’s bucket lists worldwide , and I’m pretty confident that not one of those people dreams of their trip being full of rainy days and sodden sandals. I speak from experience when I say motorbikes and tropical rainstorms – not fun .

So, when is the best time to visit Bali?

Between the dry, rainy, high and low seasons, it can get confusing to know which months are the ideal time to commit to your once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

Don’t worry, I am here to help. I am going to break down the best months for travelling to the island, along with weather guidelines, to assist you in narrowing down when to go to Bali for an adventure in paradise.

Weather in Bali

is it good to visit bali in july

Thanks to its location below the equator, Bali doesn’t experience a big surge, or drop, in temperatures throughout the year. It does, however, have a dry season and a rainy season.

A good place to start when planning your trip to Bali is to consider the weather and identify what kind of trip you are hoping to have. Are you looking to have the tropical beach getaway of your dreams? Or, are you happy to spend some reflective time indoors, watching rain spatter onto the luscious gardens on a calm getaway?

Through April to October, Bali has what is considered the ‘dry season’. Between these months you can – pretty much – guarantee bright shining sun all day, every day. With high temperatures and climbing UV indexes, it is the perfect time for heat lovers – pack your SPF50! If you are hoping to enjoy long days relaxing on the beach and refreshing in the ocean, the dry season is the best time to visit Bali. It is also the most popular time for tourists.

For the rest of the year, between October and March, the island is drenched with intense tropical downpours. You can see that life for the locals is slower during this period. With less tourists, the businesses are quieter and streets are calmer.

Personally, it is my favourite time of year in Bali – I love rain and tropical storms. The island feels so peaceful when everyone is hiding from the showers.

Despite being called ‘rainy season’ it is very rare for a whole day to be taken up by grey cloudy skies and rain. The island’s humidity soars, plant-life thrives, and you can witness just how swiftly the atmosphere changes as the dark clouds turn into shining sun rays. For those who don’t love the burning sun, and enjoy the soothing sound of rain pitter-pattering on the roof, rainy season is the time for you.

What To Do During Dry Season

is it good to visit bali in july

The Bali dry season is also the high season for tourism. The island is packed full of adventures and tours, beaches and pool clubs, jungles and cliff sides to be explored.

Here are some of the best things to do in Bali during dry season –

  • Spend a day in the sun around your villa/hotel/hostel pool, enjoying the heat and cooling off in the refreshing water
  • Head to one of the popular beach clubs where you can tan, snack, drink and relax in luxury with a pool and the ocean just steps away – Finn’s Beach Club (Berawa), KU DE TA (Seminyak), Potato Head (Seminyak), Sundays Beach Club (Uluwatu), COMO Beach Club (Canggu), Tropicola (Seminyak)
  • Explore! Venture out on fun tours with an experienced local driver who can take you to Ubud, Uluwatu, Jimbaran, Singaraja, Candidasa for days trips and short staycations
  • Have fun with your family and friends at a waterpark – Waterbom (Kuta), Finn’s Splash Water park (Canggu), Taman Segara Madu Water park (Canggu)
  • Wander the local markets to find handmade wares from clothing to accessories to home decor – treat yourself or get souvenirs to take home to your loved ones
  • Shop til you drop at the mall – Seminyak Square, Beachwalk Shopping Centre (Kuta), Discovery Mall (Kuta), Mal Bali Galeria (Kuta)
  • Enjoy cool smoothie bowl creations for a frozen breakfast, lunch or dinner! – Nalu Bowls (Seminyak & Canggu)
  • Dine on the sand at sunset over delicious, ultra-fresh seafood in Jimbaran – Menega Cafe, Jimbaran Beach Cafe, Jimbaran Seafood Dinner, Sunset Dinner Beach
  • Relax for the day at a beach bar with rentable sunbeds and ice-cold beverages until the sunsets – Seminyak Beach, Berawa Beach, Batu Bolong Beach, Petitenget Beach
  • Take a surfing lesson from one of the famous surf schools with friendly professional instructors – Wave House (Canggu), Bali Green Surf School (Seminyak), Odyssey’s Surf School (Kuta), UP2U Surf School Bali (Uluwatu)

What To Do During Rainy Season

is it good to visit bali in july

The Bali rainy season is the low season for tourism. The streets are more peaceful and accommodation is cheaper, but it is harder to find things to do when a rainstorm comes.

Here is a list of my favourite things to do in Bali during rainy season –

  • Have a spa day with your loved ones – escaping the rain doesn’t need to be boring, you can be pampered and buffed to your heart’s content as the rain pours outside
  • Take a yoga class – stretch and breathe your way to a zen mood with the rumbling of thunder far off in the background
  • Tuck in to a delicious local meal – find a nearby local warung and select from the most delicious dishes that’ll make your taste buds happy. A little sambal will warm you up after getting caught in the rain!
  • Head to the mall – much like escaping the heat, you can also escape the rain in one of the huge shopping malls – Seminyak Square, Beachwalk Shopping Centre (Kuta), Discovery Mall (Kuta), Mal Bali Galeria (Kuta)
  • Watch a movie at the cinema – catch up on the latest releases and pick at some popcorn until the rain dies down – Cinema XXI (Beachwalk, Kuta), Galeria Cinema XXI (Mal Galeria, Kuta), Cinema XXI Premiere (Level 21, Kuta)
  • Relax for the day around your accommodation – this is perfect if you are staying in a private villa, but even to explore your hotel and take advantage of the on-site amenities is a great way to pass some rainy time
  • Read your favourite book by the pool – this is one of my go-tos. Let the world stop for a moment and get lost in your book
  • Get cuddly at the cat cafe – there are a few spots around the island where you can get cosy with a feline friend. What’s better than escaping the cool rain with a purring furball to comfort you? – The Odd Cat Cafe (Kerobokan), Cat Cafe Sanur, Al-cat-raz Cat Cafe (Sanur), Cat Cafe Ubud

Month-to-Month Breakdown

I want to make your decision of when to go to Bali as easy as possible, so I have broken down the weather for each month on the island as well as the must-know calendar highlights. From high-high’s, to not very low-low’s you can see the average temperatures, humidity and also consider costs and the amount of tourists. Here we go!

Visiting Bali in January – The Wettest Month

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in January

Right in the midst of the rainy season, January is known to be the wettest month on the island. It is also the coldest, with temperatures dropping to 26℃ – basically summer in the UK. The weather in Bali during January is unpredictable with rain storms starting before you even noticed the clouds have turned grey.

If you are travelling around by motorbike be sure to have a rain jacket on hand at all times! It is very common for big streets to flood briefly during a heavy rain shower, keep this in mind for any long trips during the month.

What’s Going on in January

The number of tourists visiting Bali at the start of January is slightly high as many people come to celebrate Christmas and New Years on the island. Along with the increase in visitors comes price inflation for accommodation and flights. Considered a ‘mini-high season’ if you want to travel to Bali in January, wait until the end of the month, or booking in advance is highly recommended!

Visiting Bali in February – Cheapest Time to Visit Bali

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in February

A very humid and mildly wet month, February doesn’t attract very many tourists. If you are looking to spend a peaceful escape away from crowds, this could be a great month for you. With an average of 15 days rain you can hide away in your accommodation with a cool breeze, and explore the island on the dry days.

What’s Going on in February

The best spots for surfing during February are around Nusa Dua where the waves can reach up to 10 ft high – not for the beginner! Due to the minimal amount of tourists stopping by, you can find amazing deals on accommodation, tours and attractions throughout the island. It is by far one of the cheapest times to visit Bali.

Visiting Bali in March – Here Comes the Sun

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in March

Bringing the rainy season to a close, March offers a more sunny and bright outlook. The temperatures start to creep up and the rainy days begin to lessen. You can spend some warmer afternoons enjoying the beach, and cool evenings watching beautiful sunsets. There will still be the occasional rain shower, but noticeably less often and not as heavy.

What’s Going on in March

With March comes one of the most famous and strict of the Balinese ceremonies – Nyepi or Silent Day. Always in March – but never on the same date – Nyepi is a time of meditation, silence and fasting for the local Hindu’s. The island falls into complete stillness, as no electricity, sound or light is allowed to be used. You are not allowed to leave your residence, even the international airport closes for the day! Everyone on the island is expected to respect the rules of the holiday that are enforced by the local Pecalang or security patrol.

I highly recommend visiting Bali in March, not only is the weather better, you get to experience one of the most unique holy days in the world.

Visiting Bali in April – No More April Showers

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in April

April promises sunshine and more predictable weather as the dry season begins. The drop in humidity and return of the famous Bali heat surprisingly doesn’t have the tourists immediately queueing for flights. The island is still peaceful and calm, ideal for those looking to get a good deal on accommodation.

What’s Going on in April

As the dry season starts, the best surfing beaches transfer over to the West coast of the island. The Uluwatu breaks are a professional surfers dream, while Kuta and Seminyak are perfect for beginners. Answering the age old question when to go to Bali surfing – anytime from April through to October is the best time for surfers. Make sure to pack your sunscreen, with highs up to 33℃ , you never know what the April sun will bring.

April is also the month where creatives and planners come together to create the Ubud Food Festival. A three-day event where you can chomp your way around endless stalls and workshops learning about different cuisines and traditional ways to make your favourites dishes.

Visiting Bali in May – One of the Hottest Months

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in May

With the rainy season truly behind us, May honours the island with some of the hottest days of the year. Cool rain is a thing of the past as is humidity allowing the full wrath of Bali heat to strike. If you enjoy the heat, it is the perfect time to enjoy the calm quiet beaches before the throngs of tourists arrive in the following months.

What’s Going on in May

This is the time when expats and locals will be getting their air-conditioners serviced ready for long hot stints through the night. Goodbye measuring rainfall, hello UV index. From here we are in for a hot summer!

Visiting Bali in June – The Month of Arts

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in June

Very similar to May, June continues with high temperatures, low humidity and a very low chance of rain – although not completely zero. As with all countries around the world, weather is getting more and more unpredictable, so never discount the chance of the odd tropical shower here and there.

What’s Going on in June

As schools begin closing up for summer holidays in the Western world, high season starts in Bali. An influx of tourists to the island starts in June and leads on throughout the summer months into September. During this time you can expect to see more people on the beaches, busier restaurants and more crowded roads. June is also when prices for accommodation starts to creep up as the demand intensifies.

It isn’t all negative though, with the swarms of tourists comes better festivals, more restaurant deals, bigger events and more live music gigs!

Let’s not forget that June is when the Bali Arts Festival is held. You can learn more about the Balinese culture through dance performances, traditional barong dancing and creative showcases.

Visiting Bali in July – The Best Month to Visit

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in July

The weather in Bali in July is the best throughout the year. You are guaranteed shining sun every day, all day. Humidity remains low and chances of rain are miniscule, in July Bali is at peak condition!

What’s Going on in July

July is the busiest high season month with tourists from all over the world flying in to experience the stunning beaches, tropical jungles and beautiful landscapes. With the crowds comes longer travelling times and fewer ‘peaceful’ spots but it is also the best month to visit Bali. Everything is in full swing from bars to restaurants, tourist attractions to hotels, you can’t go wrong no matter what kind of holiday you are looking to have!

Kite flying is a competitive sport on the island, with young children – and adults – taking part in competitions where the winner is the one who wraps their string around the other kite first. So it goes without saying that the Bali Kite Festival is one of the biggest highlights of the year. Through July you will see thousands of kites taking to the sky, and being transported around the island ready for war!

Visiting Bali in August – Mid High Season

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in August

The weather in August is very similar to July with clear skies, bright sun and close to no chance of rain! A summer island dream. Temperatures will soar up to 29℃ , just slightly lower than the 30℃ that can be reached in July.

What’s Going on in August

If you thought that July was busy, wait till you see August.. Families, friends and tour groups from every corner of the world venture each inch of the island to take in every drop of paradise they can get. If you want to escape the crowds then I recommend heading up to the very North of the island. Surrounded by luscious jungles and black sand beaches, you can catch a moment of peace.

August 17th hails as Independence Day for Indonesia. A public holiday that is celebrated nation-wide, you will see thousands of flags decorating homes, offices and buildings across the island. Locals hold street parties to celebrate their independence, and enjoy some quality time with their families.

Visiting Bali in September – After the Crowds

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in September

Not much changes weatherwise from August to September. Bali is still a sunny tropical getaway where you can enjoy bright blue skies and moderate humidity. The waves are great for surfing, sunsets are magical each night and the evenings are cool enough to enjoy a night of dancing and eating with your loved ones.

What’s Going on in September

September is when the Bali high season begins to come to an end. Tourists are heading home, and fewer are stopping by for the vacation of their dreams. The atmosphere of the island is still on a high after a successful busy season where businesses thrived and locals had steady jobs. It is a great time to visit Bali to catch the summer feeling before the rain begins.

Visiting Bali in October – Here Comes the Rain

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in October

We are about to come back full circle into the rainy season with October bringing wetter days. Not quite into the throws of the big storms, it is still a good time to visit Bali since the crowds are gone, but don’t expect endless sunshine.

What’s Going on in October

October is the best time to visit Ubud as it hosts a whole range of festivals and events. The Bali Vegan Festival and the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival use the cultural centre of the island as its home. Filled with tasty snacks, interesting workshops, lectures and celebrations, it lures people from around the island to its luscious landscape.

Visiting Bali in November – A Quiet Month

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in November

The weather in Bali in November is wet in true rainy season style. Although you don’t need to worry about showers every day, it’s smart to always be prepared with a raincoat just in case – a sunny morning doesn’t mean a dry day.. Humidity charges back up into the 80%s making it one of the stickiest month’s on the island. Don’t be packing any puffer-jackets.

What’s Going on in November

November is a quiet month in terms of visitors. There aren’t many tourists and no big festivals, but you can feel the build up to December where we get another mini-high season over Christmas.

Visiting Bali in December – Mini-High Season

is it good to visit bali in july

Weather in December

Bali in December is not for the sun-seekers. With mostly grey days, the peaks of sun are greatly appreciated for some much needed Vitamin D. In the prime of the Bali rainy season there is an average of 13 wet days throughout the month, not bad if you are looking for a Christmas getaway.

What’s Going on in December

If you thought Bali is quiet over the holidays, you are sadly mistaken. Bali in December reaches another peak of incoming tourists who are looking to celebrate Christmas and New Years in the tropics. I suggest booking far in advance for flights and accommodation as the prices jump to great heights for the special end-of-year celebrations.

Final Thoughts

As a self-proclaimed Bali lover, I worship the island all times of year – through low season Bali to high season Bali, every drop of rain and every bead of sweat, I can’t stop falling in love with the tropical paradise.

For a family wanting to take a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, July is the best time to go to Bali.

For a surfer looking to catch some incredible waves, April is when you can battle with your board for some memorable surfing moments.

And, for the digital nomad wanting to spend some time on the island grinding away on their laptop, it’s never a bad time to visit bali.

Table of Contents

Get to know Bali

Bali’s reputation for beach life and backpacking precedes it as one of Indonesia’s most well-known travel destinations.

While the south is home to many stunning, yet crowded beaches and castaway bars, the north and east are home to tranquil fishing communities and untamed volcanoes, while the middle is home to a mixture of temples, rice terraces, and retreats.

There is much to be gained by deviating from Bali’s more traveled roads, especially when you consider the allure of adventure activities, water sports, and the opportunity to learn more about the island’s culture.

Bali has a plethora of adventures.

Although the pulsating center of Bali, bohemian Ubud, is worth a visit, there are other lesser-known jewels to see when you want to escape the crowds.

Sidemen, a more tranquil relative of Ubud, is overshadowed by the beautiful Mount Agung.

You can take a stroll amongst rice terraces, cool yourself in a waterfall pool, and observe rural life in action.

Bali has a strong attraction for those who want to venture out and discover magnificent scenery, so when you’re there, take some time to stop and breathe in the beauty that this island offers!

Places to visit and things to do in Bali in July

Balinese natural beauty never ceases to astound, whether it’s the mesmerizing panoramic vistas of rice terraces at Tegalalang or seeing Bali’s magnificent old temples with amazing architecture.

Because it has something to offer any visitor seeking a great holiday, Bali is a favorite among tourists.

Every tourist, from thrill seekers to spiritual yogis, is satisfied by it.

Choosing the best sights and experiences to have when visiting Bali might be challenging because the island is packed with activities and attractions.

However, we’ve compiled a list of some of the top attractions and activities to do in Bali in July, so keep reading to learn more about each of them!

Places to visit and things to do in Bali in July:

Ancient Bali temples with stunning centuries-old architecture are scattered throughout the highlands and coastlines.

These are excellent locations to see at least once during your trip to Bali in July because several have grown to be some of the island’s most recognizable monuments and each temple is distinct.

One of Bali’s most picture-perfect temples is Uluwatu Temple , whose cliff base is renowned among surfers as an unusual surf location.

The wider and more magnificent sea views are offered by this temple’s higher altitude.

Another is Bali’s central highlands’ Ulun Danu Beratan Temple , a gorgeous landmark temple.

The smooth reflecting surface of Beratan Lake surrounds the majority of the temple’s foundation, giving it a distinctive appearance of floating.

This temple is located on the western shore of Beratan Lake. Also, there is the Taman Ayun Temple .

The primary landmark of the Mengwi village in the Badung Regency is this 17th-century temple.

Inside the temple are a large tropical garden, water features including lotus and fish ponds, and well-kept courtyards and enclosures.

UBUD MONKEY FOREST

If you decide to travel to Ubud to see the Ubud Monkey Forest while you are in Bali in July, you can be sure that it was a wise choice.

On the whole island of Bali, Ubud has always been and still is one of the most significant cultural hubs.

Mandala Suci Wenara Wana , another name for the Ubud Monkey Forest, is no longer the vast forest next to a tiny village to the north of Denpasar.

It has evolved into one of Bali’s most popular tourist destinations, welcoming a large number of tourists from all over the world each month.

In this lush refuge, so many Balinese long-tailed monkeys live in their natural habitat.

The Monkey Forest is an extremely popular tourist location, especially during Bali’s summer season, which runs from July to October, so If you want to escape the crowds, go early in the day.

SEKUMPUL WATERFALL

The Sekumpul Waterfall, commonly referred to as the Hidden Falls is a tourist destination to visit if you want to travel to Bali in July.

It is regarded as the greatest waterfall on the island.

About 80 meters down, on the valley floor, the magnificent twin falls plunge.

Due to the quick and powerful water drops that cover the entire region, deep forests, and breathtaking scenery, it is beyond compare beautifully.

Additionally, you must journey down a route to reach the fall, fulfilling your need to trek.

It is advised to visit the waterfall while wearing footwear that will help you walk the stairs without slipping because they are slick and there are quite a few of them.

RICE TERRACES

Anyone visiting this beautiful island must view the rice fields in Bali.

If you’re thinking about visiting these breathtaking Indonesian greeneries, you will be in the right location because it won’t be easy for you to find the same experience of strolling through one anywhere else.

The rice terraces, surrounded by lush greenery, are a sight to see across the countryside, especially in the morning.

Rice is a staple in Bali and an important component of Balinese culture.

Since the irrigation system is used by the entire community to maintain the health of the farms, it has been in existence for millennia.

The well-known and interesting rice terraces of Tegallalang , Jatiluwih , and Belimbing are worth seeing.

The ideal time to visit the rice fields in Bali is in July when they are completely green.

It is advisable to visit them early in the morning when the weather is cooler than in the afternoon or midday.

MOUNT BATUR HIKE

Mount Batur, also known as Gunung Batur , is an active volcano in Bali that occasionally erupts, and it is situated west of Mount Agung.

One of the finest things to do in Bali in July is to go hiking there, and it’s better to get to the summit before sunrise to get the best views.

Consider going to a nearby village where you may still see Mount Batur if you decide that the ascent is not for you.

The Kintamani village of Penelokan provides tourists with fantastic picture opportunities.

Hike with a trusted guide, pay attention to environmental safety measures, and take safeguards.

Postpone your climb if there’s a likelihood of activity or dangerous circumstances, and take in the peak from a safer distance.

Observe the laws and ordinances in your area.

Additionally, before going, review the travel warnings for natural disasters.

Campuhan Ridge trek, Lake Tamblingan trek, and the trek in West Bali National Park are some other outstanding hikes in Bali.

SNORKELING AND SCUBA DIVING

One of the greatest times to go scuba diving and snorkeling in Bali is in July.

Flippers, masks, and snorkel make for an ungainly sight when you’re walking backward, but as soon as you go into the warm water and start breathing, everything above the surface disappears for a brief time.

The east coast of Bali, between Amed and Padangbai, offers some excellent snorkeling over deeper waters, with a brilliant array of colorful sea life to discover.

However, there aren’t many spots where it’s feasible to snorkel from the beach in Bali.

The eastern coast of Bali is also a favorite among divers because there are several fascinating dive locations offshore.

If you’re looking for more diving opportunities than the island alone can provide, combine your vacation to Bali with a stay on the nearby island of Lombok.

Mega drinks, dirt-cheap clubs, and music are the main attractions.

The locals frequently attend these events.

Kuta’s events feature karaoke and regional music, as well as after-house venues and street cuisine to enjoy after the celebrations are done.

The main way Seminyak Beach differentiates from Kuta and other southern adjacent beach resort areas is in the type of tourists it draws.

Bali became a popular tourist destination thanks to the enormous waves that brought stray surfers to these southwestern coasts.

JIMBARAN BAY

This large stretch of soft white sand beach is well renowned for both its breathtaking landscape and for being the location of the morning markets where local fisherman sells their freshly caught seafood.

It should come as no surprise that, being the island’s seafood center, you’ll also find many beachside grills scattered throughout the shoreline, frying up the day’s catch for your leisurely munching as the sun sets.

If you’re looking for a romantic seafood meal, go to the bay before it gets dark.

If you prefer sunshine, locate a peaceful location in the shadow and take in the tranquil seas from dawn till night.

One of the most well-liked destinations to visit in July is Nusa Dua, which has four white-sand beaches in Bali.

The area is teeming with luxury and is well-known for its water sports including parasailing, snorkeling, jet-skiing, and diving.

One of the very few beaches in the world with a golf course for tourists and locals to use is Nusa Dua Beach.

This beach is open nonstop and entry is free.

If you intend to participate in this sport, pack a rash guard and snorkeling equipment because there are snorkeling trips available.

SANUR BEACH

Sanur Beach, which is on the tranquil southeast coast, offers a more traditional vibe than Kuta or Seminyak. Additionally, families are drawn to this area by its white sand beaches and quiet, shallow seas.

Water sports, spas, street food markets, and beach walks are just a few of the many things to do on this beach.

You may also bike or walk around because everything is strategically placed in the few streets above the beach.

Additionally, there are charming guesthouses, family-friendly villas, and luxurious five-star accommodations that extend out onto the sand.

Amed isn’t your standard seaside scene with black beaches and towering volcanoes on the horizon, but it is an interesting one to view.

Amed, which is located on Bali’s northeastern coast, is renowned for its stunning sights, which are perfect for breathtaking vacation photos.

Additionally, if you enjoy diving or snorkeling, Amed is home to one of the island’s most vivid reefs, a coral garden that is equally well-liked and colorful.

A visit to the adjacent Tulamben to explore the submerged US Liberty Shipwreck, which is teeming with marine life and beauty, is frequently included in an underwater excursion at this location.

Events in Bali in July

Bali has a remarkable talent for catching you off guard with unexpected events, festivals, and celebrations, and you will be amazed by how many of them are situated in this month if you visit this island in July.

Here, we’ve compiled a calendar of Bali’s July celebrations and activities, so, keep reading to learn more about them! Events in Bali in July:

Tumpek Kandang

Two words combine to form Tumpek Kandang.

The Balinese term Kandang means cage, while Tumpek signifies peak.

Every 210 days, on the Saturday of Uye, the holiday is held.

This event is held to commemorate all animals, including pets, farm animals, and domestic animals.

The people of Bali pray to God for a fruitful year of farming, a plentiful crop, and superior quality products in addition to respecting the animals.

The fact that Tumpek Kandang is celebrated shows how conscious the Balinese are of animal welfare.

Bali Kite Festival

The Bali Kite Festival is a yearly celebration that occurs during the windiest months of the year, however, the exact dates sometimes change since they rely on the weather.

When the wind picks up, it begins, and when the wind dies down, it is over.

The event typically begins in July and runs through October, although July and August are when it is busiest because it is also one of Bali’s busiest travel months.

Sanur Beach, one of Bali’s most well-known beaches, is where Bali Kite Festival is held.

Bali Arts Festival

The annual Bali Arts Festival, which takes place in July and is hosted in Denpasar, is not only the largest cultural occasion in Bali but also one of the most important art festivals in all of Indonesia.

Through a range of performances, including traditional music and dance, theater shows, and displays of traditional crafts and artwork, the festival highlights the diversity and complexity of Balinese culture.

The festival attracts visitors from all around the world who want to take in the lively and colorful celebration of Balinese culture.

BHA Sustainable Food Festival

The second annual Bali Hotel Association Sustainable Food Festival features dozens of hotels and eateries from all across Bali.

To be clear, this BHA-sponsored festival aims to promote a more sustainable method of running restaurants and bars.

During the festival, participating restaurants are required to provide three sustainable meals for supper and two sustainable dishes for lunch.

Only Indonesian ingredients may be used in these recipes, which must also feature traditional fare and organically cultivated products.

Perang Pandan

The Aga tribe of Bali is the host of Perang Pandan.

It’s a tradition for males to fight each other to demonstrate their maturity and manhood.

The Usaba Sambah celebration, which lasts a month, is highlighted by this fighting between males, known as makare-kare .

After the traditional drinking of the palm wines in specially crafted banana-leaf cups, while someone stands in as the referee, the particular ceremonial fighting begins.

The dueling arena is particularly constructed for the occasion, and the village homes are exquisitely adorned.

Weather & Temperature in Bali in July

Due to Bali’s proximity to the equator, it experiences tropical weather.

This Indonesian island does have a distinct rainy season brought on by the western monsoon, although the maximum temperatures remain rather constant throughout the year.

Since the dry season runs from late October to early April, July is included.

The average temperature in Bali during fJuly is from around 22°C to 31°C.

Even though it’s the dry season, Bali does get some rain in July, but the precipitation is mostly restricted to lightning-spurred thunderstorms or brief afternoon showers, which can be a pleasant break from the heat.

Bali experiences 60 to 80 mm of rain per month on average throughout the summer, with most of it falling in the early morning or late afternoon.

Although the number of rainy days might vary, tourists should plan to spend about 8 to 10 days each month outside.

You’ll experience milder temperatures and more rain if you visit Bali’s central region, which is characterized by tall mountains.

The climate becomes warmer and dryer the farther you go from the mountains, with the shore being the hottest place to be.

The sea has a pleasant temperature for swimming in July, despite the extreme humidity.

Bali is an excellent place to go swimming, snorkeling, and surfing since the sea temperature there in the warmer months, like July, normally fluctuates from 28°C to 30°C.

Bali’s beaches, including Kuta, Seminyak, and Sanur, have warm, clear seas that are ideal for taking in the island’s natural beauty and marine life.

However, before going for a swim, it’s always a good idea to check the local predictions because sea temperatures might vary depending on location and weather.

Tips for visiting Bali in July

Before embarking on your journey to this paradise in Indonesia, there are undoubtedly a few things you should be aware of.

We will thus provide you with a list of some insightful tips to aid in your vacation preparation.

So, keep reading to be prepared!

Tips for visiting Bali in July:

What to wear in Bali in July

With ten hours of sunshine per day, July is one of the sunniest months in Bali.

Therefore, it is essential to pack light, cool, and quick-drying clothing that covers your skin if you want to protect yourself from sunlight.

In general, sandals and cool, breathable footwear are advised, and If you want to go on volcanoes or in the rice terraces, carry a pair of sturdy, comfortable trainers or light hiking boots to support your feet and ankles.

You should also pack some essentials from home, such as beauty products, sunscreen, and deodorant, as such might be difficult to purchase in Bali.

And additionally, especially in rural locations, it may be necessary to use insect repellent at night.

Bali is a rather traditional island despite being a tropical one, and this mostly relates to places of worship where it is customary to cover one’s shoulders and perhaps one’s knees.

Therefore, when visiting temples and other holy sites in Bali, it is advised to wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders.

Crowds in Bali in July

In addition to August, July is the busiest month in Bali throughout the summer, so it is understandable why so many visitors come to experience the tropics.

As a result, last-minute hotel and resort bookings will be challenging at this time of year, making deals at these establishments difficult to come by.

So, make sure to make your reservations as soon as possible if you don’t mind paying full price, otherwise, you might not be able to reserve the hotel of your choice.

The busiest areas in Bali in July include Kuta, Sanur, Seminyak, and Ubud.

It is therefore essential to start planning your trip and make your reservations as soon as you can.

At this time of the year, transportation times are longer than usual, especially in south Bali, and it can be challenging to find lodging or a private experienced driver in this area.

Prices in Bali in July

Bali experiences its busiest month of the year in July, thus rates are often higher.

During the busiest time of year, it’s critical to reserve lodging and transportation in advance to prevent any last-minute shocks.

You can discover a ton of possibilities, though, to meet your travel style and budget with a little bit of study and careful preparation.

Your best chance if you’re trying to find an inexpensive place to stay in Bali is to seek guest homes or low-cost hotels.

One of the priciest places to stay in Bali is the South, whereas Central or North Bali often has lower rates.

Although the cost of food in Bali is typically reasonable, street food is your best bet if you’re on a tight budget.

If you’re concerned about the price of transportation, renting a scooter or motorcycle is one of the most well-liked and cost-effective methods to go across Bali.

If you feel comfortable behind the wheel and want to tour the island at your leisure, this is a great alternative.

Transportation in Bali in July

Scooters, taxis, and drivers are your greatest options for transportation if you’re trying to figure out how to travel around Bali.

Renting a motorcycle, a vehicle, or a driver allows you to easily and hassle-free tour any part of Bali.

With such modes of transportation, destinations that would have taken hours to visit are simpler and accessible much more quickly.

This is the least expensive and most advantageous course of action if you feel confident operating a scooter.

However, bear in mind that you should exercise caution since during the busiest months, like July, the streets will be clogged with motorbikes, vehicles, and tour buses, making it challenging to ride.

If you are not prepared and make early reservations, it may occasionally be difficult to get online taxis or drivers during peak season.

And finally – A trip to Bali!

You don’t need to wonder why you should visit Bali in July when there are so many good reasons to do so.

You will be astounded whether you visit the stunning beaches and gorgeous temples or the warm people and relaxing atmosphere of the island.

So, pack your bags and travel to this tropical island this summer!

The Best Time to Visit Bali

is it good to visit bali in july

Gonzalo Azumendi/Getty Images

The best time to visit Bali is generally during the summer months of June, July, and August when the weather is driest and the days are sunny. Unfortunately, that's also when the island becomes the most crowded—you won't be the only one in search of surf, sand, and sun!

The opportunity to escape the Southern Hemisphere's winter months is just a little too tempting for tens of thousands of Australians who grab short, inexpensive flights up to Bali .

No matter the time of year, expect Bali to be bustling. The island only goes from busy to busier. In fact, a majority of travelers to Indonesia, the world's largest island nation and fourth most populous country, only visit Bali.

It's not for lack of choices in Indonesia . Bali is just one of more than 17,000 islands in the archipelago.

Peak Season in Bali

If you don't mind heavy traffic and sharing crowded beaches, go when the weather is best. July and August are often the driest months with pleasant temperatures.

A good compromise is to risk occasional rain showers in exchange for more peace. The shoulder months before and after the high season (particularly April, May, and September) are enjoyable and experience many sunny days.

The wettest months to visit Bali are from November to March. December, January, and February are extra rainy and a little hotter. These are the peak months in Thailand and countries north of Indonesia that are celebrating their dry seasons before the heat really moves in.

Despite the rain and slightly hotter temperatures in December, Bali still becomes busy with revelers during Christmas and the New Year holiday.

Weather in Bali

Although Bali is warm and comfortable throughout the year, the island has two distinct seasons: wet and dry.

Unsurprisingly, the number of visitors increases as sunny days increase. Everyone's favorite island activities, particularly sunbathing, trekking, and motorbiking, are far more enjoyable without monsoon rain.

Temperatures in Bali during July and August range from the 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), and December and January aren't too far off these balmy temperatures.

Bali is situated just eight degrees south of the equator and enjoys a tropical climate. Those factoids become a sweaty three-shower-a-day reality once you wander too far from the breezy coast. Humidity often hovers around 85 percent. One exception is the green Kintamani region north of Ubud in the interior. Mount Batur provides enough elevation to even make weather chilly and drizzly some days for travelers on a motorbike.

Traveling during the dry and high season doesn't guarantee all sunny days. Mother Nature keeps the island green throughout the year. Even during the dry season, you'll want to be prepared for brief pop-up storms.

Visiting Bali During the Low Season

Although rain doesn't exactly make for a nice day on the beach or exploring the island's interior, there are some advantages to visiting Bali during the "green" season.

You'll get better deals on accommodation and can upgrade to nicer rooms for the same price you would ordinarily pay for a budget guesthouse. With a few insider tricks, you can score great deals on hotels in Bali.

Plus, fewer tourists will be clogging popular hotspots such as Ubud. You may have attractions such as Goa Gajah (the Elephant Cave ) to yourself. During high season, you may have to wait to go inside. Also, the air is cleaner. Less dust and particulate matter from fires hang in the air. And finally, interactions are sometimes friendlier when locals are not so overworked during peak season.

Of course, visiting during the low season has its downsides, too. Sometimes consistent downpours span for days while others dissipate within an hour. You never know. Plus, humidity is much higher, making the heat feel that much worse. Mosquitoes are much worse between rains, making dengue fever more of a threat on the island. Visibility at dive and snorkel sites is often worse because of sediment washed into the sea. Rougher seas may make boat trips less enjoyable.

The drawbacks sound less than appealing, but many travelers prefer to visit destinations only during the low seasons.

Why Is Bali So Popular?

Perhaps because Bali is predominantly Hindu rather than Muslim or Christian, it boasts a unique vibe that differs from surrounding islands. No matter the reason, Bali is always a top destination in Asia .

Bali has been a popular stop for backpackers on the Banana Pancake Trail for a long time. The island is also a famous surfing destination in Southeast Asia and a top honeymoon spot in Asia .

Elizabeth Gilbert really spread the word with her hit book Eat, Pray, Love . Julia Roberts starred in the 2010 movie of the same name, opening the floodgates to Ubud. Prior to 2010, Ubud was mostly quiet and attracted budget travelers interested in a healthy alternative to the raging parties in Kuta.

But Hollywood isn't as much to blame as geography. Backpacking students and Australian families—along with plenty of retired expats—choose to escape cooler weather in the Southern Hemisphere by grabbing cheap flights to Bali.

With many students out of school during the summer months, party epicenters such as Kuta become rowdy as young revelers come to enjoy the nightlife. The atmosphere along Jalan Legian resembles what you would expect at some American beaches during college spring break. Fortunately, there are plenty of lesser-known places along the coast: Amed, Lovina, and Padangbai still offer escape. And if things really get out of control, the nearby islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are tempting.

Spring brings rain to Bali in March and temperatures can be quite hot. However, wait a month and you'll find April to be much more comfortable, and the dry season begins in May. Spring is a popular time for surfing off the island.

Events to check out:

  • Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls on the Hindu New Year and will certainly affect your trip—but the night before is a lot of fun. For a full 24 hours, tourists are expected to remain inside their hotels and no noise is permitted. The beaches and businesses close—even the international airport shuts down. Nyepi hits in March or April, depending upon the Hindu lunar calendar.
  • The colorful festival of Holi is usually celebrated in late March.

What is summer for most Westerners is winter in Bali. It's also the best time to visit if you prefer warm and dry weather (although locals consider July and August "cold"). There are occasional rains, but nothing like monsoon season .

  • Hari Merdeka ( Indonesia's Independence Day ) on August 31, may also affect travel to and from Bali. Indonesians also enjoy visiting Bali and come from as far as Sumatra and other places in the archipelago.
  • The Bali Arts Festival is a long-running festival that is among the most popular in the country. The festival traditionally starts on the second Saturday of June and runs through mid-July.

While Indonesia as a whole doesn't truly have an autumnal season, the stretch of months from September through November begins with clear, dry weather (their spring). In November, there are fewer tourists but if you hope to swim, the seas can be rough at this time.

  • The Nusa Dua Fiesta is a fun week of art exhibitions, cultural performances, and more along Bali's southeast coast. It's typically held in October or November.
  • Among Bali's most popular events, the makepung (buffalo) races are held throughout the fall in Negara.

December kicks of Indonesia's summer season. Humidity is high and hours of thunderstorms aren't unheard of. Warm seas have rough waters, making swimming less than ideal, but February conditions are great for surfers.

  • As with all popular destinations in Asia, Lunar New Year (dates change from year to year) draws a crowd, despite rainy weather in January and February.
  • Galungan is the most important religious holiday in Bali. It marks the time when the ancestral spirits visit the Earth. There are two of celebrations throughout the year due to the Pawukon calendar.

The best time to visit Bali is in the shoulder season, either in the early summer or fall when the weather is dryer and there are fewer tourists.

Bali's rainy season lasts from November to March with January and February being the hottest and rainiest months.

If you don't like large crowds of tourist, you should avoid visiting in Bali between June and July. Although, this is when the weather is most pleasant.

July is the second month of the dry season – the first is June – and the month that sees peak tourist season. Bali is close to the equator, and the weather there is warm all year round. However, with the onset of July, the weather changes from warm and hot to relatively pleasant with minimal rain. The skies are clear, and there is a slight wind accompanied by days of ample sunshine. As July is a peak season, the inflow of tourists in Bali is a lot more than in the other months, partly because it is best suited for all tourist and travel-related activities. Rainfall is less, with almost no change in sea temperature.

Things to do and places to visit in Bali in June

Given that the weather in July is pleasant, it is understandable that tourists do want to go and see all the places they have on their bucket list for Bali. Given below are some places that are worth enjoying in July.

1. Visit the famous Ubud Royal Palace

Royal Ubud Palace

Officially called the Puri Saren Agung, the royal palace of Ubud is one of Bali's most prominent and well-preserved landmarks. The Ubud Royal Palace was built during the reign of Tjokorda Putu Kandel and has acted as a center of display for traditional Balinese architecture. The place has a garden setting and is a must-visit for art lovers and those seeking to look at ethnic Balinese art.

Location – Talan Raya Ubud No 8, Ubud, Gianyar Timings – 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM

2. Discover the Sekumpul Waterfall

Bali in July

Termed as the best waterfall in Bali, the Sekumpul Waterfall – also known as the Hidden Falls – is the tourist spot to visit if you aim to go to Bali in July. The breathtaking twin falls drop to the valley floor – about 80 meters below. The entire area is surrounded by water vapors owing to fast and forceful drops of water and deep forests, making it a scenic beauty beyond imagination. What’s more is that to reach the fall, you must trek down a path, satisfying the trekker in you. The way to the waterfall is slippery and involves several steps, so it is advisable to visit it while wearing footwear that will assist you in climbing the steps without slipping.

Location – Sekumpul, Bali

3. See and pray at the beautiful Tanah Lot

Bali in August

A rock formation that is especially famous for housing an ancient Hindu pilgrimage temple, Pura Tanah Lot, is a popular tourist spot. In Balinese, Tanah Lot means “Land [in the] Sea” and is only 20 kilometers Northwest of Denpasar. The shrine on this beautiful land is to pay respect to the energy of the Bali sea gods. The cliff is also home to various restaurants and provides you with a very pulchritudinous look at the endless sea ahead of the cliff.

Location – Beraban, Kediri, Tebanan Regency, Bali Timings – 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM

Festivals in July in Bali

As July is the peak month for tourists coming to Bali, it is no surprise that it is also the month when many festivals take place in Bali, which are celebrated with a lot of pomp and show.

4. Bali Kite Festival

Bali kite festival

July sees the sky of Bali fill up with kites, which is the month when the Bali Kite Festival is celebrated. Hundreds and Thousands of kites soar up in the sky, making it seem like it is the same color as that of a painter’s palette and not solely blue. While some kites are surely small, most are relatively large and are found in various shapes. This festival is celebrated to please the harvest gods. This festival happens over several days as July is the month when winds pick up speed. Throughout the festival, many people also compete to win prizes and get a piece of the sky to fly their kites in.

5. Galungan

This 10-day festival is celebrated in the last week of July and carries into the first week of August. This festival is celebrated to honor one God above all – called Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa locally – also called The Inconceivable. This is celebrated in the time believed by Balinese people to be the time when spirits roamed the Earth. These spirits show warm welcome by the people through their customs in temples and homes. Throughout this festival, a man dressed as Barong – a mythical beast symbolizing divine protection – carries out an exorcism ceremony at night called the Ngelawang. The Barong’s act of roaming is considered to be an act of maintaining the balance between good and evil.

Things to carry to July in Bali

In July, Bali is windy and balmy but not very hot. Hence, it is advisable to carry enough SPF and other lotions in your suitcase to use on a regular sunny day. Also, to enjoy the vacation to the maximum, keep light clothing and a good pair of sunglasses to protect yourself from heat. In addition, it would be a great idea to keep an umbrella to protect yourself in case of a sudden shower. Remember that as July is relatively warmer in Bali, water activities are a great idea, and to do that, you should keep relevant swimwear. So, what are you waiting for? 12 things to know before going to Bali, Indonesia

Jan 18, 2024 • 8 min read

is it good to visit bali in july

These top tips for visiting Bali can help you plan the perfect trip © Klaus Vedfelt / Getty Images

The Indonesian island of Bali is a sun-soaked paradise that attracts every type of traveler, from budget-conscious backpackers to luxury jet-setters.

But – as with any destination – the vast majority of travelers (especially first-timers) will have a number of questions, whether it's "Can unmarried couples stay together in Bali?" (an increasingly common one in the light of recently-introduced new rules for tourists in Bali, which we'll get to later) or "What should I wear?"

Thankfully, Bali is one of the easiest destinations to explore, although its size – the island covers 5776 sq km (2230 sq miles) – means travelers should take the time to think about what they want to see and do relatively early on. For example, places such as Seminyak , with its beach clubs and five-star hotels, tend to become somewhat crowded during peak season, while more rural destinations, such as Ubud , might well require a longer taxi journey  but are absolutely worth the effort, especially for those keen to avoid the crowds.

It's also worth bearing in mind that Bali is one of Asia's safest destinations. As with any holiday hot spot, there are always going to be certain things we can do to ensure we stay safe while traveling, but crackdowns on petty theft and bad behavior have all helped transform the island into a wonderfully family-friendly destination .

Here are our top tips for anyone heading to Bali.

A farmer in a terraced field

1. Check your vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to Indonesia

There are no mandatory vaccinations for visitors to Bali (barring the need for travelers arriving from countries with a high yellow fever transmission risk to carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate), although Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus are often recommended. Bali falls into the "low to no risk" category when it comes to malaria.

Rabies remains a big problem in Indonesia, and although it claims fewer lives in Bali than elsewhere (according to the World Health Organization, 11 people died from rabies in the first half of 2023), it still exists, and the rabies vaccination is worth considering. Working out what vaccinations you need for a holiday to Bali is mostly a personal choice, but if you have concerns, contact your local physician for the latest guidance.

2. Bring a reusable bottle

One of the most asked questions by tourists: "Is Bali's tap water safe to drink?" The short answer is "no." Stick to bottled water or, better still, bring a bottle with a built-in water filtering membrane. Purchasing bottled water – especially in restaurants – can quickly become expensive, which is another reason we're fans of reusable filtered ones, such as Larq and Lifestraw. These are also handy when it comes to purifying water used for cleaning fruits and vegetables. Additionally, try to steer clear of ice and use bottled water to brush your teeth.

3. Don't write off the rainy season

Having a rough idea of when dry and rainy seasons fall is undoubtedly something that is useful to know before heading to Indonesia . But bear with us – Bali's rainy season, which takes place between October and April, is a great time to visit. It's typified by short, sharp showers that often only last a few minutes. And in addition to the fact that prices for everything – from regional airfares to hotels – plummet, the island becomes wonderfully lush, the weather is still warm (typically hovering between 24°C/75°F and 29°C/85°F), and the main tourist attractions are blissfully crowd-free. You'll also find it easier to snap up places on excursions, such as snorkeling tours and guided hikes.

4. Buy some bug spray

To be clear, Bali doesn't have a major mosquito problem, but like anywhere in Southeast Asia, these pesky biting bugs love the occasional bloodsucking session – in the case of Bali, particularly during the rainy season between November and April. Lighten the load on your wallet by purchasing your repellent in Bali and opting for bug sprays made in Asia. Popular (and much cheaper) Asian brands you'll find throughout Indonesia include Soffell (snap up the surprisingly pleasant floral-scented version if you can).

5. Avoid traveling during peak times

Traffic in Bali can be horrendous – especially around busier spots such as Denpasar and Kuta – and estimated journey times on apps like Google Maps or Grab are notoriously unreliable. Peak times tend to be 6am to 8am (but roads often remain busy until 10am when day-trippers head out) and 4pm to 7pm. Allow plenty of time to get from A to B, especially when heading to the airport.

A pathway between lily-covered ponds leads to a temple building

6. Pack clothes that will cover you up for when you're not on the beach

In Bali, skimpy swimwear is fine for the beach, but definitely not for trips to a supermarket or restaurant.

Men and women need to ensure their shoulders and upper legs are covered when visiting religious sites, although most of these places will have sarongs for visitors to borrow. Pack like a pro by taking a light cotton scarf that can double as a sarong if you visit a temple or other religious site, and a pair of light cotton trousers (bonus points if they've got a built-in mosquito repellent), which will protect you from bites while also providing enough coverage at sites where tiny denim shorts or a vest just won't cut it.

7. Behave respectfully

Various media reports might give the impression it's easy to get into trouble in Bali, but it's not. In reality, you just need to be sensible: don't do drugs (being caught with under a gram of cannabis will land you in prison), be respectful and dress appropriately at religious sites, don't ride a motorbike or moped without a helmet (Bali's police have recently started cracking down especially hard on foreign moped drivers), and treat locals with respect.

8. Locals will be keen to share their knowledge with you

Staying at a hotel with a concierge or a friendly receptionist? Feel free to grill them about the best local bar, beach or restaurant. The Balinese are incredibly proud of their island  – don't be surprised if the bartender at your favorite beach bar ends up inviting you to their home for dinner with their family – and love nothing more than telling visitors about their favorite beach, nature walk or temple.

9. Eat, drink, stay and shop locally

Don't be afraid to go local, whether this means eating at tiny family-run restaurants or opting for local drink brands. You'll pay less and enjoy delicious local dishes, and you'll be contributing directly to the local economy, too. These days, even the smallest restaurants, bars and independent hotels will be listed on online review sites such as Zomato (especially popular in Asia), and a quick glance should tell you whether the business in question is reputable or not.

10. Carry some loose change

Many businesses in Bali will take payment by card, but there are still plenty of places that only take cash. These include temples, smaller souvenir shops and beachfront masseuses (which, by the way, offer some of the best massages going). ATMs on the island can be unreliable and are also few and far between in some areas. Additionally, don't assume you'll always have the mobile data you'll need to book a ride-share taxi. If you need to hail a tuk-tuk or taxi from the side of the road, it's highly likely you'll need to pay in cash.

When using ATMs, opt for ones connected with major banks (in Indonesia, these include BNI, Bank Mandiri, BCA and CIMB Niaga) to avoid withdrawal fees and remember that Indonesian ATMs issue the cash first, so don't forget to wait for your card to appear.

11. Get around by moped (but always wear a helmet)

Mopeds are the cheapest way to get around Bali  and often – especially during rush hour in places such as Kuta – the quickest, too. They're also offered as a mode of transport by Grab and Gojek (Bali's most popular ride-sharing apps), and prices for journeys via mopeds are significantly cheaper than those made by car. Just remember to check the reviews of your chosen driver and always wear a helmet (the driver will typically provide one). Avoid hailing scooter taxis on the street – you won't be able to check their credentials, and, in reality, Grab and Gojek have so many scooter drivers (both identifiable for their bright green jackets) that there's simply no need.

12. There is a no-sex-before-marriage law

In December 2022, the Indonesian government brought in a new law that forbids sex outside of marriage. Technically, this law applies to visitors as well as locals.

At the time, it was announced that the legislation won't be introduced until late 2025. Since then, Bali's governor has said that the law – dubbed by some newspapers as the "Bali bonk ban"– won't apply to tourists and, additionally, guilty parties can only be reported by spouses, parents or children. In summary, the law represents a worrying development for human rights in Indonesia, but it's not one that is likely to affect tourists.

Where Is Bali?

Before we get into when to go to Bali, let’s discuss its location. Bali is an island located in Indonesia , Southeast Asia ‘s largest country.

According to Britannica , Indonesia features 17,500 islands — with over 7,000 of these being uninhabited. The largest islands are New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java.

Amongst these islands, Bali sits 1 mile east of Java and is the most visited spot in Indonesia by tourists. That being said, it’s worth adding on some of the other islands if you have time in your itinerary.

Best Time To Travel To Bali

Bali’s best season to visit is the dry season from May to October. The most popular months are July and August, with the latter being the driest month of the year.

This is the high season when the weather is warm, dry, and sunny — helping to make it the best time to travel to Bali for a beach holiday and outdoor activities.

If you’d like to take advantage of the great weather while escaping the crowds and finding travel deals, consider visiting during May and June, Bali’s shoulder season.

Worst Time To Travel To Bali

The rainy season and the months of December, January, and February are generally considered the worst time to visit Bali. There are more rainy days and higher humidity at this time of year and the weather is not ideal for visiting the beach.

That being said, Bali really is a year-round destination. There’s no bad time of year to visit and there are some advantages to traveling to Bali in January , the wettest month of the year.

Let me explain: July and August are the busiest time to visit Bali. It’s peak tourism season, as these months coincide with holiday periods in the USA, Europe, Australia, and Indonesia.

Popular venues and tourist attractions can be crowded at this time. Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, and the beaches of the west coast are at their busiest and it’s a more expensive time to visit Bali.

On the other hand, visiting Bali during the rainy season means fewer crowds and better deals. Plus, the landscapes look extra lush and vibrant from the rain.

And if you’d prefer to stay inside, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep you busy.

Cheapest Time to Visit Bali

The cheapest time to visit Bali is during the rainy season from November to April. It’s the low season, so you’ll find:

  • fewer visitors
  • less demand for flights
  • lower hotel prices fall

In particular, many of the larger hotels and resorts offer discounted rates at this time of year, so make sure to check their websites.

Least Busy Time to Visit Bali

January and February are the least busy months to visit Bali. It’s the height of the rainy season and the weather tends to be hot and stormy with high humidity.

While December is also a rainy month in Bali, the Christmas holiday draws a larger number of visitors. So, the best time to visit Bali in the low season if you want to avoid the crowds is in January and February.

Bali Weather By Month

To help you better understand the best and worst time to visit Bali, let’s look at what the weather is like month by month.

Bali’s Rainy Season

Bali’s rainy season is often considered the worst time to go to Bali. That being said, you shouldn’t discount this period completely. Here is what you need to know:

Weather in Bali in November

In November, the rainy season in Bali begins and the weather is typically very hot and muggy with some sunny days. Average temperatures range from 23°C (73°F) to 31°C (88°F) and November brings afternoon showers and storms around 50% of the time. Pack an umbrella and wet weather gear if you’re going out.

Weather in Bali in December

The weather in December in Bali is even wetter with an average of 358mm this month; but, there’s still quite a lot of sun. Average temperatures are warm with lows of 23°C (73°F) and highs of 31°C (88°F).

Weather in Bali in January

Bali in January is warm, humid, and often sunny; but, it’s the wettest month of the year. Bali’s Dry Season

Bali’s dry season is typically considered the best time to go to Bali. Here is what you need to know to plan your trip:

Weather in Bali in May

In my opinion, this is the best month to visit Bali, along with June, as it’s the shoulder season. With around 8 hours of sunshine every day, the weather in Bali in May is perfect for the beach. Although there is a possibility of some light rain, maximum temperatures are warm with highs of 29°C (84°F) and lows of 23°C (73°F).

Weather in Bali in June

June in Bali brings more great beach weather with sunny skies and low rainfall. Average maximum temperatures reach 30°C (86°F) and lows of 22°C (72°F). June is a beautiful time in Bali. It’s slightly cooler and there’s less humidity.

Weather in Bali in July

Now let’s discuss visiting Bali in July . July is high season and one of the best months to visit Bali for warm, sunny beach weather and clear skies. There’s very little rain in July and temperatures are a little cooler, ranging from 22°C (72°F) to 29°C (84°F).

Weather in Bali in August

August in Bali brings warm, sunny days and low rainfall. It’s ideal beach weather with even less rainfall than July and similar temperatures ranging from 22°C (72°F) to 29°C (84°F).

Weather in Bali in September

September in Bali brings slightly warmer, sunny weather with the possibility of light showers. Average temperatures in September range from lows of 22°C (72°F) to highs of 30°C (86°F).

Weather in Bali in October

The weather in Bali in October tends to be a bit wetter than in September with more afternoon showers. Temperatures are slightly higher from 23°C (73°F) to 31°C (88°F) and there’s more humidity in the air.

Visiting Bali During The Dry Season

From May to October is Bali’s dry season. Temperatures are slightly cooler, and the weather is typically warm and sunny with little rain.

The dry season is the best time to visit Bali for a beach holiday and for outdoor activities like diving, surfing, and hiking; but, it’s the worst time to travel to Bali if you want to avoid the crowds or you’re on a budget.

Bali dry season: pros

  • The weather is at its best during the dry season and it’s perfect beach weather.  There’s little rain and slightly cooler temperatures with less humidity.
  • Seas are calmer and water visibility is good for snorkeling and diving.
  • Dry weather is ideal for hiking and outdoor activities . It’s the perfect time to explore the island on a motorbike.
  • The dry season is the “on season” for surfing , with good swells and the best conditions. This is also a great time to book a Bali yoga surf retreat , a popular experience blending outdoor adventure with wellness.

Bali dry season: cons

  • July and August are the high season and crowds of tourists flock to Bali’s beaches. Cafés, pubs, and tourist attractions can be very busy.
  • Accommodation, flights, and tours are often more expensive at this time of year.

Places to go during Bali’s dry season

Ubud and Bali’s west coast beaches tend to be crowded in the drier months. It’s the peak season for tourists and it’s a good time to escape to the mountains and to less visited parts of the island like Lovina, Amed , Tirta Gangga , and Sideman.

The dry season is the best time for visiting the islands near Bali like Nusa Lembongan , Nusa Penida, Lombok , and the lovely Gili Islands . The sea is calmer at this time of year and it’s a safer and more comfortable time to travel by ferry.

Things to do during Bali’s dry season

  • Enjoy Bali’s beautiful beaches with swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.
  • The dry season brings calm clear water with good visibility for diving and snorkeling.
  • Hike to the top of Mount Agung or Mount Batur at sunrise for spectacular views of the active volcano and its surroundings. If you have at least 7 days in Bali , this is a must, though if doing Mount Agung you should allot more like 2 weeks in Bali to allow for a few additional recovery days (since it’s the island’s highest peak).
  • Bali’s many beautiful waterfalls are fun to visit at any time of year. If you enjoy hiking, here are some of the top waterfall trails .
  • Ride a motorbike or a scooter to get around.
  • Temple visits are a great introduction to Bali’s rich local culture at any time of year.
  • Enjoy Bali’s famous cafes and beach clubs and beach sunsets.
  • Attend seasonal annual events like the Bali Arts Festival in June/July, the Nusa Dua Light Festival in July, and the Bali Arts Festival in July to October.

Things to pack for Bali’s dry season

For Bali in the dry season, pack lightweight cotton clothes, shorts, and a swimsuit. A long-sleeved shirt, sarong, and sandals are a good idea for visiting temples and long pants will offer some protection on a motorbike.

Balinese people dress modestly, so it’s best to cover your shoulders and knees, especially if you’re visiting less touristy parts of the island. Shorts, swimwear, and tank tops are fine to wear on the beach.

Bali is too hot for jeans so it’s best to leave them at home.

Visiting Bali During The Rainy Season: Pros & Cons

The wet season, from November to April, is still a good time to visit Bali if you don’t mind some rain.

Although there’s more wet weather at this time of year, the sun still shines quite a lot, and the rain tends to come in afternoon showers and storms that feel refreshing in the hot weather.

The wet season is a time when the island is lush, green, and less crowded. It’s also a cheaper time to visit, and you can take advantage of the many fun things to do in Bali besides hanging out on the beach.

In the rainy season, the worst month to visit Bali is December. Not only is December one of the wettest months, but it’s also very popular with visitors over the Christmas holidays — making it a busier and more expensive time to travel to Bali.

Personally, I went to Bali in January and had a great time with minimal disruption from the weather. And, even at the height of the wet season, I found plenty of fun things to do when the weather wasn’t perfect.

Bali rainy season: pros

  • Bali is lush and green at this time of year and the rice terraces are beautiful.
  • Bali’s many waterfalls are spectacular in the wet season, particularly the waterfalls in Ubud . Here is a list of beautiful waterfall trails if you enjoy hiking — just make sure to bring a raincoat and waterproof backpack!
  • There are fewer tourists , meaning it’s quieter on the beaches and entrance queues are shorter or non-existent at temples and attractions.
  • Accommodation is cheaper . Some of the larger hotels and resorts offer discounted rates in the low season.
  • Airfares are lower at this time of the year. This makes it especially popular for backpackers and those traveling solo in Bali who don’t have others to split the costs with.

Bali rainy season: cons

  • Unpredictable weather can make it hard to plan your daily itinerary. You’ll definitely want to have a backup plan for outdoor activities.
  • There is more rain, and afternoon showers and storms are common.
  • The weather is hot and the humidity is high.
  • The rainy season is the worst time to visit Bali for outdoor activities like hiking and it’s no fun being caught in a storm when riding a motorbike.
  • Seas are choppy and long ferry trips are best avoided.
  • Stormy weather causes poorer water visibility for snorkeling and diving.
  • Beaches can be dirtier , as more garbage washes up on the shore at this time of year.

Places to go in Bali’s rainy season

The wet season is the best time to visit the popular west coast beach areas like Kuta , Seminyak , and Canggu if you want to avoid the crowds in the busier months.

It’s also the best time to holiday in Ubud for the same reason. Yoga classes, cafes, and restaurants are less crowded, and Bali’s luxurious spa s sometimes offer discounts at this time of year.

Things to do in Bali’s rainy season

There’s no shortage of fun things to do in Bali if the weather isn’t perfect. Here are some suggestions. Just always make sure to check the weather forecast before leaving your hotel room!

  • Chasing waterfalls is one of the best things to do in the rainy season. Bali’s many waterfalls are spectacular at this time of year and it’s the best time to visit Munduk’ s stunning Banyu Wana and Banyumala Twin Falls . You can swim in the gorgeous plunge pool at the base of these incredible waterfalls.
  • Stroll through the verdant green fields at Tegallalang Rice Terrace near Ubud or the UNESCO world heritage listed Jatiluwih Rice Terraces in Central Bali.
  • Visit Bali’s sacred water temples and discover the fascinating spiritual side of Balinese culture. Take a cleansing bath in the Holy Springs at Tirta Empul Temple and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery of the popular Tanah Lot and Uluwatu Temples .
  • Watch a gorgeous sunset at Kuta Beach. The dramatic skies of the rainy season make stunning sunsets and Bali’s west coast is the perfect place to relax on the beach and watch the sunset over the water.
  • Enjoy a cocktail at Azul Bali — Legian’s leading beach club — or Finns in Canggu. There are many popular beach clubs to choose from.
  • Indulge in a luxurious massage and a Bali flower bath at one of the island’s many spas.
  • Take a cooking class and immerse yourself in the local cuisine. Learn how to make delicious sate skewers and traditional peanut sauce.
  • Wind down with yoga and meditation at one of Bali’s many yoga schools. The Yoga Barn in Ubud is one of the best known; but there are yoga classes, retreats, and teacher training courses all over the island. Here is a list of top-rated Bali yoga retreats .

Things to pack for Bali in the rainy season

Pack an umbrella — like this compact windproof one — and wet weather gear for visiting Bali in the rainy season in case it downpours when you’re out or riding a motorbike.

Just note that the weather is still warm, so to stay dry you’ll want a raincoat that is breathable — like this lightweight option that comes in numerous colors and patterns.

You might also consider investing in a waterproof backpack, like this one , or lining your backpack with heavy-duty garbage bags to protect your gear while you’re out exploring. This is especially helpful if you’ll be bringing a camera.

Free Travel Guide for Bali

Tips to keep bali magic in july / august.

' itemprop=

Bali just came to your mind while trying to choose your next destination? Or, alternatively, you already booked your flight? In both cases, you probably already heard that the high season in Bali isn’t always the best time to peacefully discover the island. Well, let’s stop beating about the bush: it’s both false… and true!

Visiting Bali in July or August offers a few advantages if you make sure to avoid the tourist crowds as much as possible. Indeed, you do not visit Bali the same way in August or in January. Otherwise, you will probably get back being disappointed and with a bad impression.

If the huge number of incoming travellers in high season turns the south of Bali into an overcrowded destination, it’s because they all come to enjoy the below-mentioned advantages.

It’s the best season!

Firstly, the weather forecast is much more pleasant at this time of the year. Indeed, the hours of sunlight are at their highest point while the rainfall is the lowest of the year, especially in August, which is the least rainy month of the year along with September.

Secondly, this optimal weather forecast coincides with the European summer school break and the Australian winter holidays (in July), making it a prime destination for travellers who prefer to enjoy the best weather and for those who cannot travel at any other time of the year.

Is it the best destination in Asia?

For the Asian continent lovers, Bali is indeed one of the only very recommended places thanks to the good weather forecast during the summer months .

Indeed, the monsoon rages over most of the other countries in the region (Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam...) and temperatures are sometimes extreme in Japan and South Korea.

As a result, a sky-rocketing number of arrivals

The downside is that Bali is highly populated during these two months.

At this time of the year, the roads linking the south to Ubud (the biggest touristic spot of the island) are often very packed. Transportation times are longer than usual, especially in south Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua…), as this area attracts most of the travellers and so of the road traffic.

Furthermore, it can be difficult to find an accommodation or a private experimented driver in this area: the best accommodations and activities are usually booked months in advance. It is therefore necessary to start planning your trip and to make your reservations as soon as possible.

In short, you should book your travel up to 6-9 months in advance (except if you are very flexible and fine with anything).

Turn your constraint into a unique opportunity

It is sometimes impossible to postpone a trip to a less busy period. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t take profit of this constraint! Indeed, Bali is a large island and other areas remain authentic and rather quiet, even during the very high season.

The further you go from the airport (located close by Denpasar, in the south), the more you will find quiet places with just a few travellers. Most of them choose to stay in south Bali, or in Ubud, and explore the island from here. To avoid them as much as possible, just get away from these touristic hubs and discover the less visited regions such as the centre, the North and the East of the island . They are full of beautiful temples and breath-taking natural sites. Believe us, you won’t regret the additional 2 hours of transportation to reach them.

Here’s a small selection of the wonders waiting for you out from the beaten track:

–   Tirta Sudamala (Bangli’s region) : while the well-known Tirta Empul will be flooded with hundreds of visitors, you’ll be glad to discover this other sacred place suitable for Balinese purification in a quiet atmosphere. The place is spectacular, photogenic, authentic, and mostly visited by local people. Take this opportunity to live a unique experience as we provide you with an introduction to the Balinese purification together with an experimented local guide .

–   Temples and other wonderful places : Pura Kehen (in the centre of the island), Pura Beji (in the North), the Brahma Vihara Arama monastery (on the North), the Banjar’s sacred springs (on the North), Pura Lempuyang (on the east side)…

–   Lemukih / Sekumpul waterfalls (on the North) : truly the most beautiful waterfalls of Bali. You can reach them by using a long stair or by walking in the jungle with a local guide, passing by the Grombong‘s paddy fields! It’s an easy level hike that offers outstanding viewpoints. Take this opportunity to chat with the locals, as they are not always used to see travellers in this area).

–   The wonders of east Bali: in the East, not only you’ll find water palaces (Tirta Gangga and Ujung) but also wonderful hikes and easy walks in the nature. For instance, Kastala’s paddy fields or Bukit Asah and its magnificent views on the sea. Nyoman, our local guide based in Candidasa, will be very pleased to show his wonderful and authentic region.

As you probably already understood, do not hesitate to swim against the tide and get out of the beaten tracks! While all the tourists will gather in the South in sometimes unbearable conditions, you will instead experience one of your most authentic trips. Are you ready to dive in!?

Is July a good Time to go to Bali?

Yes, Bali is good to visit in July. It’s the dry season and there’s less rain than at other times of the year. The weather in Bali in July tends to be warm and sunny but Bali is an island with a tropical climate, and it can rain at any time of the year.

Why the dry season is a good time to visit Bali

July in Bali is in the middle of the dry season which falls from March to October. The clear skies in July are perfect for a beach holiday and swimming, snorkelling, and relaxing on the beach.

Popular things to do in Bali are learning to surf at Kuta Beach or enjoying a gorgeous sunset and a cocktail at one of Bali’s Beach clubs. Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu are famous for their stunning beach sunsets .

If you’re there for the nightlife , July, August and December are the busiest months in Bali and it’s an ideal time to enjoy the best of the party scene. Large crowds create an electric vibe and parties that last all night.

The dry season in Bali is also the perfect time for hiking through the green rice fields, chasing waterfalls and enjoying beautiful mountain and coastal landscapes.

TIP: Take a day trip from Ubud to Mount Batur and hike to the top of the mountain to watch the sunrise with spectacular views and relax in a hot spring to rest and recharge. It’s one of the most popular day trips in Bali.

July in Bali is also a great time to visit the beautiful tropical islands near Bali like Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan, Lombok and the Gili Islands. Seas tend to be calmer in the dry season and the weather is less stormy at this time of year.

The ferries and speed boats that connect Bali with the nearby islands are more reliable in the dry season and the beaches are even more beautiful than in Bali with fewer tourists.

What to Expect from July Weather in Bali

Average temperatures in Bali in July range from 22°C (72°F) to 29°C (84°F) and are slightly cooler than at other times of the year. Typically, July has clearer skies and less rain. The air is dryer with less humidity, and it feels cooler than in the wetter months when the humidity is high. Coastal breezes take the edge off the heat and the days are pleasantly warm and sunny.

The weather in Bali in July is perfect for a beach holiday so if you plan to relax and enjoy the sand, sun and surf, July is a good month to visit. It’s also a great time for outdoor activities like hiking, visiting waterfalls and temples and riding a motorbike around the island. July is one of the best months to go to Bali if fine weather is a priority.

NOTE: In my experience, July weather in Bali can sometimes be wet and stormy.  Bali is a tropical island, and it can rain at any time of the year.

What to do in the Dry Season in Bali

There’s no shortage of fun, adventurous and relaxing things to do in Bali during the dry season. Here are some of the best activities for Bali in July:

  • Enjoy Bali’s beautiful beaches relax on the sand, swim, surf and enjoy the warm, sunny weather.
  • July in Bali is the perfect time for snorkelling and diving. During the dry season, seas are calmer, and the water is clearer with excellent underwater visibility.

TIP: Take a boat trip to the islands and swim with Manta Rays at Manta Point near Nusa Penida.

  • Or snorkel with endangered sea turtles in the Gili Islands. I spent a day snorkelling in the Gili’s and saw lots of turtles, colourful fish and coral and some underwater statues just offshore from Gili Meno. It was a highlight of my visit to the Gili Islands.
  • Spend a few days in Ubud , the cultural heart of Bali surrounded by rice fields and ancient temples. Visit the Palace, meet the cheeky monkeys in the Ubud Monkey Forest, enjoy the café scene , and relax with yoga classes and luxurious Bali spa treatment .

Visiting the Monkey Forest is fun addition to a 3 days in Ubud itinerary

  • Ubud also has some of Bali’s best shopping experiences with outdoor markets and boutiques lining the main street.
  • Traditional dance and gamelan performances are held outdoors each evening by the lily pond at the Ubud Sarasvati Temple.
  • And when you’ve seen the sights, head out of town to explore the beautiful rice terraces at Tegallalang and the beautiful waterfalls nearby.
  • Indonesia has many stunning temples to explore and the lovely water temples near Ubud like Tirta Empul , Pura Sebatu and Goa Gajah are very atmospheric. Or you can travel further afield to see Bali’s most important temple at Pura Besakih or beautiful Pura Ulan Danu Beratan in a gorgeous setting beside a lovely lake.

  • Spend a romantic evening watching a lovely sunset at Jimbaran Beach . Sit at a table in the sand and eat a delicious fresh seafood meal by candlelight at Lia Café.

TIP: Visit the Bali Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple on a day trip and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Agung, another active volcano in Bali. But expect crowds of tourists and long queues in July.

Reasons to Avoid July in Bali

July and August are the busiest months to visit Bali . It’s the high season for tourists and flights, accommodation and tours are more expensive. Bali’s west coast beaches can be crowded with tourists in July and August as these months are holiday periods in the USA, Europe, Australia, and Indonesia.

During the peak season in Bali, attractions and venues can be crowded. Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud and the beaches of the west coast are at their busiest. So, if you don’t like crowds, want to save money or prefer not to book ahead, perhaps it’s best not to travel to Bali in July

June in Bali is a great month to visit before the peak tourist season but the best time of the year to visit Bali is in May. Coming out of the rainy season the island is lush and green and the weather is warm. The months of the shoulder season are a lovely time to visit Bali.

Travel Tips for July in Bali

  • In July and August, Bali can be quite crowded. The most popular places, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud are full of other tourists. So, if you’re in Bali in July, why not escape to Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands and enjoy the beautiful beaches with fewer crowds and a chilled atmosphere?
  • Book accommodations and tours ahead of time to avoid disappointment. While you can nearly always find somewhere to stay at short notice, the best options often book out in the peak season and prices become more expensive if you haven’t booked in advance.
  • It’s a good idea to allow extra time for travel to and from the islands around Bali, even in the dry season. When I was there, unseasonal Bali weather in July brought storms and big seas to the waters around the island and the speed boats weren’t running. I was stranded on the Gili Islands for several days with no way of getting back to Bali. And while there are worse things than being marooned in a tropical island paradise, I met several travellers who had missed tours and international flights because they were unable to travel back to Bali.
  • July is also a great time to visit the neighbouring island of Java to see Indonesia’s most famous temples, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Borobudur and Prambanan. Java is also famous for its spectacular mountain scenery and the active volcano at Mount Bromo is one of the best and the easiest of Indonesia’s volcanoes to see.

Standing at the edge of the Mount Bromo volcano near a plume of steam and gas

  • July weather in Bali can be hot so book a hotel with air conditioning and a pool to cool down after a busy day of sightseeing.
  • Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting Balinese temples and wear a sarong and sash.
  • Take an umbrella and pack wet weather gear. Even in the dry season, it can rain.
  • Don’t drink tap water, drink bottled water instead.
  • Don’t flush your toilet paper. Use the bins provided. The sewerage systems can’t handle it.

Festivals in July in Bali

The bali kite festival.

The Bali Kite Festival is known locally as Pesta Layang-Laying Bali and is held in Sanur and Denpasar in July. At this time of year, cool winds sweep along the coast and the beaches are ideal places for flying kites high in the sky. This traditional Thanksgiving ritual is especially popular with youths who make and fly their own kites in traditional designs.

Bali Arts Festival

Pesta Kesenian Bali is an annual Arts festival in Bali celebrated with exhibitions, performances and various cultural events. The Festival is held in Denpasar from June to July and opens with an elaborate and showy street parade. What to pack for Bali in July

Bali weather in July is warm and sunny so pack lightweight cotton clothes and leave the jeans behind. They’re hard to wash and hot to wear. Here are some suggestions for what to pack:

  • Pack lightweight, quick-drying clothes for the warm July weather in Bali.
  • Cool cotton dresses and sandals are perfect for Bali in July.
  • Shorts can be worn at the beach and in tourist areas.
  • Take a sarong to wear on temple visits. A sarong can double as a beach towel, a skirt, a dress, a scarf, or a sheet.
  • Long sleeve shirts and long pants are a good idea for evenings, riding a motorbike, for temple visits and in more rural areas. You’ll also need to cover up if you plan to visit Muslim islands near Bali like Java, Lombok or Flores.
  • Balinese people also dress modestly. Covering shoulders and knees is expected when visiting temples and is appreciated in less visited areas.

Note: You can buy most toiletries and clothes in Bali so pack light & enjoy shopping when you’re there.

Is January a good time to go to Bali?

How much does it cost to visit Bali in July?

Airfares are considerably more expensive for Bali in July compared to a January trip. In January, return airfares from Australia cost less than US$700 from Sydney to Bali. And I paid around US$600 more for my plane ticket for a July trip to Bali.

Accommodation was slightly more expensive in July and the average cost of a 3-star hotel was US$30 – $50 compared to Bali in the low season where I averaged US$20 -$40 per night. When I booked hotels in advance for Bali in July there was more choice and better deals on offer. The better hotels were often booked out weeks ahead so it’s definitely a good idea to plan and book ahead for Bali in the high season.

Food and transport costs were similar in January and July.  A meal in a café or restaurant cost around US$7 and in a warung serving local Indonesian dishes, I paid around US$2- $4 for a delicious meal.

A taxi from the airport to Ubud takes over an hour and costs around US$23. Grab and Gojek taxis are even less expensive. A short trip around town on the back of a motorbike taxi costs only US$1 or $2.

July in Bali is definitely a more expensive time to visit because it’s the most popular time of year and there are more tourists. Expect to pay more for accommodation if you want to be spontaneous or if your plans change at short notice.

Bali in January waffle for breakfast

What to eat in Bali in July

A highlight of visiting Bali is the food. There are some fabulous cafes around the island and some top restaurants serving Indonesian and Western dishes.

  • A highlight for me was eating a huge and delicious fresh seafood meal at Lia Café on Jimbaran Beach watching the sunset over the surf.
  • Brunch in Ubud at the comfortable Lazy Cats Café or Soulbites was also highly enjoyable with Eggs Benedict and smoothie bowls on the menu.
  • I also loved eating at local warungs (Indonesian restaurants) and enjoyed the novelty of Nasi Goreng (fried rice with egg) for breakfast.
  • The Satay skewers were delicious and served with a tasty peanut sauce. The Old Brick , a warung in a laneway in Sanur, serves the best satay chicken.
  • Gado Gado (steamed vegetables with peanut sauce) was another favourite.
  • I also enjoyed an occasional shot of Arak, the local Balinese alcoholic spirit.

Where to stay in Bali in July

Bali’s west coast has some beautiful surf beaches that are very popular for July in Bali with a large choice of hotels and guesthouses.

Kuta  is ideal for young partygoers who want to dance the night away and relax on the beach during the day. Kuta offers a beach holiday with nightlife and shopping malls near the airport.

Nearby  Seminyak  is a bit more upmarket and also very popular. With designer shops and restaurants and lovely west-facing surf beaches, Seminyak is the perfect place to watch the sunset at a beach club with a cocktail in your hand.

Canggu  is popular with digital nomads who want to escape the busier parts of Bali but still enjoy the cafes, nightlife and surf beaches on the west coast.

Sanur  on Bali’s east coast has protected beaches and is popular with families. July is the perfect time to visit Sanur for the Kite Festival and watch youths flying the traditional kites on the beach.

Ubud  is the cultural heart of Bali and has a palace, beautiful temples, traditional dance, art galleries and yoga. It’s a great central location for exploring the island and one of the best places to visit in Bali.

Can’t decide between Ubud and the beach for a holiday in Bali in July? This comparison, Ubud vs Kuta has all the information you need to help you choose which will be best for your Bali vacation.

Ubud monkey forest temple

Uluwatu  on the Bukit Peninsula has some of the best surf in Bali with dramatic coastal scenery and a laid-back atmosphere.

Nusa Dua  is known for its exclusive luxury resorts with some of the best beaches in Bali. Nusa Dua is a resort suburb in a tourist enclave with beautiful gardens and security guards. It provides a sanitised version of Bali ideal for families and romantic couples.

Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida are islands just 30 minutes away from Bali by fast boat. It’s a good choice if you want to escape the tourist crowds in Bali in July and August. The Nusa Islands have stunning coastal scenery and gorgeous surf beaches with fewer tourists.

Lombok and the Gili Islands are about 90 minutes away from Bali by ferry and are ideal to visit in the high season. There are fewer visitors and beautiful beaches with snorkelling, diving and sea turtles. The Gili Islands are a chilled-out place to be when Bali’s beaches are crowded in July and August.

Is Bali better in June or July?

June falls in the middle of the dry season and the weather in Bali is warm and sunny. It’s a better time than July in Bali. Although the weather is warm and sunny in both months, June is quieter and there are fewer tourists than in the peak months of July and August.

Is Bali better in May or July?

May falls in the dry season and is one of the best months to visit Bali. May is also in the shoulder season and there are fewer tourists than in July and August. Prices are cheaper than in the peak season, the weather is warm and sunny with less rain and the island is lush and green. It’s an ideal time to go to Bali.

Is Bali windy in July?

Final thoughts – Is it worth going to Bali in July?

I loved visiting Bali in July and, although July is one of the busiest months to go, it was the month I was free to go. July is a more expensive time to visit but overall Bali is still a comparatively cheap destination and you can have a fun and successful solo trip to Bali at any time of the year.

An upside of travelling to Bali in July is that the tourist crowds bring a pumping party scene so if you’re visiting for the nightlife, July and August are a great time to go to Bali.

I found that Bali’s weather in July was warm and sunny but definitely cooler than it was in January when the humidity was high. It’s the perfect time for a beach holiday, for swimming, surfing, snorkelling and diving. The water visibility is good and temperatures are warm. July is also one of the best times for outdoor activities like volcano hiking, chasing waterfalls and visiting temples.

And if, like me, you want to avoid the tourist crowds, it’s easy to escape to one of the many lovely islands nearby. I enjoyed Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan but the Gili Islands were my favourite. I especially loved the laid-back vibe on Gili Air and snorkelling with endangered sea turtles was a highlight.

TIP: If you’re looking for the best weather for a holiday between November and March, it’s Bali’s wet season so why not go to Thailand instead? Is Bali Worth Visiting In 2024? The Pros & Cons Of Visiting Bali

' src=

With its ever-growing popularity, you might be wondering if Bali is worth visiting. It’s considered one of the most beautiful places to visit, and since shooting to fame in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Eat, Pray, Love, everyone has had Bali on their bucket list.

After living in Bali for half a year , we saw the good and the bad. It’s well-known for its endless rice paddies, breathtaking beaches, lush jungle terrain and pastel-coloured sunsets over the ocean.

However, the Island of Gods is a very popular holiday destination and with hordes of tourists arriving every day, certain areas are no longer as peaceful as they used to be. So, the question begs, is Bali still worth visiting?

In this post, I’m sharing the honest truth about visiting Bali—no sugarcoating. I’m telling you exactly what we think and including the reasons why you should and should not visit!

Amazon Simple Disclosure Updated

Is Bali Worth Visiting Or Not?

It's worth visiting Bali to see the famous Rice fields.

My honest opinion is that Bali is still worth visiting . However, I do think you need to consider the pros and cons and understand that you won’t have paradise for yourself.

South Bali has become very crowded and urbanised, attracting higher prices and pollution, which are the island’s biggest drawbacks. But that’s only one part of the island. There is hope, and if you’re up for an adventure, you can find authentic areas filled with natural beauty. This is why I still think Bali is worth visiting.

After spending six months in Bali, we came to realise that to experience an authentic Bali away from the crowds, we would need to explore further away than the popular areas of Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud and Uluwatu.

So, we went on a road trip around the island . This is how we know that there are areas of natural beauty where you can experience the true Balinese charm.

However, if you’re not one for a road trip and are planning to visit the south, know that it will be busy. That said, even with the crowds, it’s still a fun place to visit. If you go prepared, you can easily plan the best time to visit Bali and what attractions to do on your holiday, so you won’t be disappointed.

⚠️ The most important takeaway: Don’t have unrealistic expectations. Bali is no longer a paradise oasis, but it is still going to be an incredible holiday filled with adventure and excitement.

Summary: Pros And Cons For Visiting Bali

In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary for you . I’ll go into more detail on each point below .

  • Reasons to visit Bali: It’s a stunning tropical island full of natural wonders and can be a very affordable destination to visit with a unique culture. The locals are welcoming and friendly, and you’ll find plenty of beautiful beaches and delicious food. It’s also a great spot for digital nomads, and the marine life is wonderful; the waters are filled with colourful little fishies.
  • Reasons not to visit Bali: The urban infrastructure has ruined many areas, and you’ll find many of the main attractions are crowded. Over-tourism is leading to price hikes, especially in tourist hotspots, and tourist traps and scams are common. The biggest issue is pollution, which is a serious concern, although there are plenty of organisations trying to combat this. The island is filled with ex-pats, which some of you might not like, and it’s worth keeping in mind there are stray and malnourished animals everywhere, which can be quite upsetting.

Why Is Bali Worth Visiting – Pros

Now you know what to expect from Bali, here are the top reasons making Bali worth visiting.

1. The Waterfalls Are Amazing

I love waterfalls, I mean who doesn’t? When we living in Bali we visited a load of them, luckily for us it was a quite period post covid and we had most of them to ourselves, or at least, shared with few others.

This will unlikely be the same for you and although Bali is one of the best places to visit waterfalls, keep in mind they can be busy. However, the island is absolutely full of dreamy waterfalls, which, even if you’re visiting Bali for a short trip , have to be added to your itinerary.

There are many waterfalls to choose from, and depending on where you are, you’ll need to choose carefully to avoid the biggest crowds. A few of our favourites included Juwuk Manis (this is a really good one which sees fewer crowds), Gitgit Waterfall , Aling Aling Waterfall , Taman Beji Griya Waterfall , and Sekumpul Waterfall .

👉 Pro tip: Aling Aling Waterfall was one of our favourites, mainly because it’s possible to try cliff jumping into the natural pools and there is also natural waterfall slides. We also loved the Juwuk Manis waterfall pictured below.

2. The Ancient Temples Are Fascinating

One thing Bali is famous for is its temples, these aren’t any old temples either, these are ancient temples filled with a years of history and built on sacred ground. The whole island is full of magnificent temples built to worship their Gods, and with some being over 1,000 years old, it’s no wonder they have become huge tourist attractions!

While we were in Bali we visited so many temples that we became “templed out,” if that’s even a thing. We ended up missing a number in Thailand as we just couldn’t bear visiting another—imagine! However, they are all stunning, each with a unique story.

⭐ Pro tip >> One of the most revered temples in Tanah Lot , it’s dedicated to the Sea God and has become a must-visit location, especially to witness one of Bali’s breathtaking sunsets. Another popular temple is Pura Luhur Lempuyang (alias Heavens Gate) pictured below.

Bali on a budget: Heavens gate - Bali Road Trip

3. The Rice Fields Are Captivating

Another thing Bali is known for is rice paddies. I dunno about you but it’s the first thing that spring to mind when I think of Bali. The rice fields are part of Bali’s heritage and they definitely make the island worth visiting, if only to witness the traditional terraced fields.

Did you know that the Balinese invented a unique irrigation system, which has helped them farm their fields for centuries? Two of the main UNESCO World Heritage Sites are are Tegalalang Rice Fields ( Google Maps ) and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces ( Google Maps).

Rice fields in Bali.

4. The Culture & Heritage So Interesting

The Balinese have a rich heritage and culture unique to the island . Their main religion is a mix of ancient Hinduism and Buddhism, which can be experienced all over, from daily offerings placed along the roadside, around temples to beautiful ceremonies.

Visiting Bali during one of these ceremonies is fun and educational, especially if you can get involved in a local celebration. While we were there, we were invited to attend the Galungan Bali Ceremony a local family. This was very unique experience and certainly makes Bali worth visiting!

We went to a ceremony with our local friends while we were in Bali. This was very unique and made bali worth visiting for us!

5. The Beaches Are Wonderful

I don’t care what people say, I think Bali has some of the best beaches in the world. I agree some of the main ones aren’t so great but remember I said you have to leave the tourist hotspots to discover the best of Bali? Well this is one of the reasons why!

It’s a tropical island after all and there are still plenty of breathtaking beaches lined with coconut palm trees and soft, fluffy sand. In certain places, the jungle comes right to the shoreline, and if you’re lucky, you can feel totally lost in the world.

The beaches vary, and not all are suitable for sunbathing and swimming. Decide what you want from your beach day, and then choose your beach. A few personal favourites include Bingin Beach and Nunggalan Beach in Uluwatu!

6. The Surfing Is Top-Notch

For the wannabe surfers out there, there’s no better place than Bali. Southwest Bali has the best waves for surfers: Canggu & Uluwatu. There are, of course, many other areas to surf, and you can use apps such as Magic Seaweed to find the best spots to surf for your level. There are also tons of surfing schools lining the beaches, so go ahead and take a lesson!

⭐ Pro tip >> One of the best places to learn to surf is Medewi. We spent a week or so here practicing our surfing. It’s an off-the-beaten-path destination which attracts surfers and those looking for a more authentic laidback vibe than south Bali. We really enjoyed Medewi and have written a visitors guide here.

Surfing in Bali is popular.

7. The Yoga & Meditation Is Spot On

One of my top reasons for visiting Bali was that I wanted to improve my yoga practice. Bali is literally a spiritual haven for many people who are looking to do the same and met some wonderful people while experimenting with different styles of yoga.

The island attracts yogis in their thousands and places like Ubud have become known for its hippie yogi vibe. Where we were in Canggu, there was a yoga studio in every neighbourhood. You’ll find plenty of workshops, yoga courses, breathwork, and meditation classes.

⭐ Pro tip >> I really enjoyed the teachers and classes at Samadi Yoga & Wellness Center ( Google Maps ), and highly recommend this studio; however, I also tried a few others in Bali such as The Practice ( Google Maps ) and Guan Yin Yoga Shala ( Google Maps) which were also worth visiting.

8. The Snorkelling & Scuba In Unbelievable

The north and east coast of Bali (such as Pemuteran and Amed)are the best for snorkelling and diving . The waters surrounding the island have some of the highest marine biodiversity in the world, and it’s truly a wonder to dive into this marine environment.

Bali is a great place to learn to scuba dive if you haven’t already. You could even try a DISCOVER Scuba before committing to a course. Many companies offer accredited PADI diving certificates , and since Bali is an affordable country you’ll be able to find a great deal !

⭐ Pro tip >> Since we LOVE the ocean and had a great time splashing around. We wanted you to have the best memories of your Bali holiday, too. Therefore, we’ve put together the ULTIMATE guide to snorkelling tours in Bali!

9. The Volcanoes Are Mighty

Bali and it’s volcanoes are something else. The Indonesian islands are literally over a hotspot and the whole country is made of thousands of island chains created by volcanic eruptions of the millions of years.

I think volcanoes are some of the most incredible natural wonders in this world, and being able to climb them is an opportunity not everyone gets, so we feel privileged to have the opportunity .

Bali’s most popular volcano for climbing is Mount Batur but the tallest is Mount Agung – both can be climbed, although the latter will take a multi-day hike and is more challenging. They are both stupendous!

👉 Related Post: Mt. Batur is the easiest to climb and can be visited during a day tour. Usually, a Mount Batur sunrise hike is the best option, and it’s a beautiful way to experience a Bali sunrise over the island.

10. Island Hopping Is Bliss

Bali is, after all, an island, and where there is one, there is usually more! There are a few smaller islands close to Bali, such as the Nusa Islands and the Gili Islands. The next islands over from Bali are Lombok to the east and Java to the west.

I highly recommend planning a visit to the smaller Nusa isalnds or Gili islands to your itinerary as they are stunning. If you want to experience more of Indonesia, you should consider island hopping to Lombok, too. We really enjoyed Lombok ; it has a different vibe to Bali but it’s less developed and more rural.

👉 Related Post: We visited a few places in Indonesia. A few of our favourites were Nusa Lembongan and Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra . We also went to Komodo National Park near the island of Flores.

Nusa Cenningan is part of the Nusa Islands next to Bali - visiting here was worth it and highlight of the trip.

11. The Jungle Treks Are Rewarding

Ever wanted to hike through a jungle ? In Bali, you can! I’ll admit it’s not for everyone, and you’ll want to make sure you have a local guide, the right equipment, and plenty of bug spray. But the views can be especially rewarding, and you’re bound to see lots of wildlife.

12. The Sunsets Are Breathtaking

We finish on sunsets, and Bali sunsets, in particular, can be magical and totally make the island worth visiting. I reckon some people visit Bali just to capture those pastel skies, and with luck, you’ll get to witness one of the most stunning sunsets of your life too.

You’ll need to get the best view to enjoy it, the beaches are popular but you’ll need to be on the west side of the Island. Canggu and Uluwatu are good spots, many people gather on the beaches. If you don’t fancy the beach, there are plenty of sunset bars dotted around the island; our favourite is Ulu Cliffhouse.

Bali sunsets are magical!

Why Is Bali Not Worth Visiting – Cons

I want to give you both the positive and negative reasons for visiting Bali. So, here are the cons and why Bali might not be worth visiting.

13. Infrastructure Is Taking Over Rice Fields

As Bali’s tourism industry continues to grow, the island’s stunning rice fields are gradually being replaced with modern infrastructure such as hotels, resorts, and shopping malls. This has led to a loss of the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, which is what makes it unique.

14. The Attractions Are Crowded

Bali’s natural wonders have become some of the island’s most popular tourist attractions, but many of these sites are now overrun with visitors, and their natural beauty has been compromised.

If you’re looking for a more peaceful and secluded experience, you’re going to have to venture off the beaten path. Head to the north, away from south Bali, and you’ll find hidden treasures.

Tukad Cepung Waterfall was a lovely spot to visit near Ubud, Bali.

15. Over-tourism/tourist traps

Bali has become a victim of its own success, as its popularity has led to a saturation of tourist traps and inauthentic cultural experiences. However, with the right planning and guidance, it’s still possible to find truly unique and authentic experiences on the island.

16. The Overpricing Is Getting Ridiculous

Despite being a relatively affordable place to live, Bali can end up being an expensive island, especially in popular tourist hotspots. You should be prepared to pay more for food, accommodation, and other amenities in these areas.

17. Scams Are Becoming Increasinly Popular

You need to be aware of this! Keep an eye out for potential scams, particularly when it comes to money. Fake tours and ATM scams are common on the island. Do your research and exercise caution before handing over any cash.

18. Pollution Is Everywhere

Bali is facing a serious pollution problem, with trash, noise, and air pollution all posing significant issues. Even the island’s most beautiful locations can be marred by litter, and you should be mindful of their impact on the environment.

Rubbish washed up on a beach in north Bali.

19. Ex-pats Galore

Bali has become a popular destination for digital nomads and expats, leading to a vibrant social scene in some areas. However, this can also make the island feel crowded and busy, particularly in popular tourist areas.

20. The Strays Are Heartbreaking

Bali’s stray dog population is a heartbreaking issue that you need to be aware of. These dogs are often in poor health, and the island’s cultural attitudes towards animals can be distressing for animal lovers. Be careful around stray dogs and be mindful of your own safety.

Consider The Negatives Of Bali Tourism

I wanted to expand a little more on this topic because although I’ve listed 8 items above, from experience, there seem to be two major negatives stemming from tourism in Bali: pollution and over-tourism .

Pollution has always been a problem in developing countries, and Bali is no exception. Indonesia has a serious pollution problem, which originates from the lack of education and government involvement in managing and disposing of rubbish.

There are charities and groups working hard to educate and clean up Bali. Some of which you can get involved in, including beach and river clean-ups. Sungai Watch is a great organisation to contact if you want to volunteer for the day.

Tourism, on the other hand, while having a great influence on Bali’s growth, also contributes to the pollution problem. Bali’s evolution over the years has meant the landscape has seen a significant change. Where rice fields used to be, there are now villas and restaurants.

The crowds gathering in south Bali are becoming an issue, mainly due to the lack of infrastructure on the roads. Traffic is terrible in areas like Canggu and Seminyak, and the once fresh, clean air now becomes thick with pollution . Rush hour isn’t a pleasant time to be in Bali!

OVERALL…

I mention this only to inform you but not to deter you from visiting . I’m sticking to my guns and still love Bali. We had an incredible time living there, and everyone I’ve spoken to since has said how much they loved it. So, Bali is still worth visiting.

Well, maybe not so bad in this photo but the traffic can get to a stand still, a lot!

Planning Your Trip To Bali

To help you plan your trip to Bali, I’ve put together a lot of information that I think will be crucial to helping you plan your perfect holiday. When I travel, I want to know which areas to visit, whether they’re safe, how expensive they’ll be, and when to go.

What Are You Looking For On Your Trip?

First, what do you actually want from your holiday in Bali? This is an important question that will help you decide where to visit.

Here are some more questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you visiting Bali for the party vibe and social aspects?
  • Are you looking for a spiritual journey ?
  • Do you like to go hiking and enjoy nature ?
  • Are you a scuba diver , snorkeller or water baby?
  • Are you visiting with a family, couple or friends?
  • Do you enjoy fitness & health , is this why you’re visiting?
  • Are you looking for Bali’s culture and heritage?
  • Are you happy to move around or would you rather stay in one place ?

Which Area Is Worth Visiting In Bali?

There are many different areas to stay in Bali depending on what you want, to help make your experience visiting Bali worth it, here are some suggestions.

Famous for its surf and stunning sunsets, Canggu is a very hip and happening place in Bali, but it’s also one of the busiest . It’s super crowded , especially during peak season. It’s a great place to head if you’re a social butterfly and want to meet people , surf and enjoy cocktails beachfront. But, don’t go here if you want a peaceful vacay!

Canggu is a busy spot in Bali.

One of our favourite places in Bali is Amed . It’s less busy and has fewer crowds. It’s a good place to head if you love the water; it’s sheltered in a bay and perfect for diving and snorkelling. It’s also a good place if you want to work on yourself, do yoga and enjoy a more traditional Bali.

In the mountains of north Bali, Munduk much like Amed, is usually only visited on day trips but the area has so much more to offer. For one, north Bali is famous for its breathtaking waterfalls and jungle terrain. This is a great place to head if you want to get closer to nature.

How Many Days Should You Spend In Bali?

Depending on your reasons for visiting Bali and your budget , the amount of time you spend on the island will need to be considered. It is not uncommon to visit Bali during a backpacking trip around southeast Asia, in truth, Bali is usually on everyone’s itinerary.

It’s also a very popular holiday destination where people visit anywhere from 10 days to 4 weeks! There are a lot of activities on the island to make any holiday to Bali fun, exciting and relaxing.

However, here are some suggestions for the number of days you should spend in Bali, depending on your type of trip.

  • Backpacking trip – 5 days
  • Beach holiday & Bali culture – 10 days – 2 weeks
  • Adventure holiday – 3 weeks
  • Road trip in Bali – 4 weeks

When Is Bali Worth Visiting?

Depending on your reasons for visiting Bali, you will want to make sure you check the weather to make your trip worth it. Bali has two seasons: wet and dry.

Most people will agree that visiting Bali during the dry season is the best time. It’s true that you will get warm dry days with little to no chance of rain, great for beach holidays. However, due to this, this is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit Bali.

Hotels and tours are always more expensive and more likely to be booked up while popular sites are full of crowds. If you’re visiting Bali to escape the chaos you might want to consider visiting in the wet season or during the shoulder months .

✅ What are shoulder months? Should months are the months on either side of the wet season. In the case of Bali, they fall at the end of October/November and the end of March/April.

Dirt road around rice fields to the beach in Medewi, Bali

Bali’s wet season is from November to March. Even though it sounds like it will be wet all the time, it’s unlikely it will rain all day . Most days will only see a few hours of rain and then sunshine throughout the rest of the day.

The thunderstorms in Bali are incredible and well worth visiting the island for at this time if only to witness them!

It’s important to us as it ensures a safe trip. ✔️ Flexible, continuous coverage can be bought before you depart or at any point during your journey abroad. ✔️ Can be very affordable. Is It Expensive To Visit Bali?

Bali is a very affordable country (this post will provide some expense tables to help you budget) it is not expensive to visit and can be done on a budget. That being said, it is also very easy to spend in Bali. Since Bali has seen a huge influx in tourism over the last 20 years it has developed with this in mind creating luxury resorts, fine dining and extravagant entertainment venues.

Keep this in mind if you’re visiting Bali on a budget , as it’s easy to overspend! One of the best ways to keep costs down during your trip to Bali is to rent a scooter to get around instead of using a taxi. This will also give you the freedom to visit other areas in Bali and make your trip worth it!

The best things to try in Canggu, Bali

Is Bali Safe?

Speaking from our own experience, Bali is a safe place to visit in terms of violent crime. The most common crimes are petty theft and scams, both of which are not life-threatening.

Opportunistic crime is at its highest in Bali. The best way to avoid being targeted is to stay vigilant during your travels, never leave valuables lying around, and never wear expensive jewellery. Also, never flaunt cash, and keep an eye on the people around you.

Is Indonesia Worth Visiting?

With the above in mind, Bali is still somewhere worth visiting, but it’s also part of a larger country. Indonesia is a much less explored part of Southeast Asia, but it is a huge country! It’s made up of thousands of islands (over 17,000) and has one of the most unique cultures in the world. So, why is Indonesia worth visiting?

You will be able to see orangutans in the wild in Bukit Lawang, Indonesnia.

Is Bali Or Thailand Better?

We visited both Thailand and Bali (and Indonesia), and actually, we prefer Thailand as a whole. This is mainly because of the pollution we saw in Indonesia, which was really bad, but also because Thailand has had a lot more time to develop its tourism.

The infrastructure in Thailand makes it super easy to travel around and the affordability is still very reasonable. It’s still got a traditional Thai charm which we enjoyed but we noticed (from visiting 15 years ago) that the country has cleaned up and developed in a positive way.

Ayutthaya in Thailand.

Plus, the number of stray animals has also been managed better in Thailand. For us, the stray dogs in Bali (and Indonesia) were heartbreaking at times.

On top of that, Thailand didn’t seem as overcrowded as Bali . Maybe because it’s not the newest destination anymore and we’re talking about the whole country rather than just an island but I think this has worked in its favour. That being said, Bali is still worth visiting!

The Verdict: Is Bali Worth Visiting?

By now, it’s probably safe to say that Bali isn’t the place to go if you want an untouched beach holiday. But it’s also clear that Bali is still worth visiting. Okay, so you won’t have paradise to yourself, but you will still get an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience. Trust me.

Bali is worth visiting, you just need to know where to go and what to do to make it your perfect holiday. There are still places in Bali, off-the-beaten-path where you don’t have to share your sunset with crowds or waterfalls with hordes of people.

You can also plan your visit during less popular times and go to the less visited attractions and sites. Bali is still full of wonderful districts which see fewer tourists, and if that fails, check out the rest of the country – it will be similar to Bali after all!

The best time to visit Bali

By Anna Chittenden

When is the best time to visit Bali

Bali  is one of those glorious  destinations  that is generally great to visit at any time of the year. One of  Indonesia ’s 17,000  islands , Bali is just eight degrees south of the equator, with a tropical, hot and humid climate much of the time. The island is small – just 152km wide and 112km long – and the temperature is fairly consistent, averaging at about 30°C throughout the year.

When is the best time to go to Bali?

The low season is what any traveller should aim for. Visit Bali in April, May, September or October, and the island can be appreciated at its best. Some of  Bali's best hotels  and  villas  can be snapped up at reduced rates, and of course, airfares are cheaper. And having fewer people around means you get the  island  to yourself – with less crowded beaches, temples and roads. Easy to get a sunbed at a beach club or a turmeric latte at a Canggu brunch shack; easy to get a spot on that  Eat Pray Love -style  yoga  mat.

When is Bali's rainy season – and should I avoid it?

Of course, there are slight weather patterns. Rainy season is officially  October  to March when you can encounter tropical rains that are heavy but brief. The rains don’t tend to last all day, and during these months it’s possible to enjoy a row of sunny days with bright blue skies. The dry season is  April  to  September  when the humidity is low and average rainfall decreases, although showers do also occur during these months.

What time of year is cheapest in Bali?

Generally speaking, Bali is considered to be a year-round destination, so there's not necessarily a ‘cheaper time’ to visit. However, there are certainly months when Bali becomes busier. When choosing the best time to visit Bali, the consistently good weather means that this is not so much the deciding factor. Instead, you might want to time your trip to avoid peak season, which is July to August, Christmas and Easter .

As Bali is so small it can easily feel very crowded. Expect to wait around two hours in long queues on arrival at immigration at Denpasar airport; any road journey can quickly become a bore with heavy traffic filling narrow roads.

What if I go to Bali in peak season?

If you are in Bali during peak season, however, there are plenty of low-key destinations to avoid crowds. For example, head up the west coast to Balian, an understated village favoured by  surfers  and best known for its beautiful black volcanic sandy  beaches . For those feeling more adventurous, it’s a short flight to Labuan Bajo, the launching point for the magnificent Komodo National Park. August is a great time to go diving here.
