Jiuzhaigou – Planning a trip to the gem of northern Sichuan

Travel to Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou along with Tibet it is one of the two most popular destinations in western China.

This article was written by Harley Greenberg, who lives in Chengdu, Sichuan, and works with a local travel agency. It’s a guide to visit Northern Sichuan and is going to focus on the following points:

  • Challenges of getting in and out of Jiuzhaigou.

Who is Jiuzhaigou for and why visit it?

How long should i spend at jiuzhaigou national park.

  • When is the best time to visit Jiuzhaigou National Park.
  • Tour or no Tour? Different ways to reach Jiuzhaigou National Park.
  • Activities and things to do in and around Jiuzhaigou National Park.
  • Other plances to visit near Jiuzhaigou: Songpan, Huanglong National Park, Munigou and Aba grassland.
  • Entrance ticket and times to visit Jiuzhaigou National Park.
  • Other “special” things you should know.

Depending on your travel plan, a trip to Jiuzhaigou could be as short as just three days. But in most cases, I encourage people to spend at least six days in the beautiful Aba area of Northern Sichuan.

Update March 2018 : On 8 August 2017 a 7.0 earthquake damaged considerably the Jiuzhaigou National Park and forced the Chinese government to close the park to visitors. On 3 March 2018 some parts of the National Park were reopened to visitors, including Shuzheng Valley and Zechawa Valley (the Rize Valley still remains closed).

At the present moment, there are some restrictions. To visit the National Park you need to book the tickets in advance, the number of visitors per day is limited to 2,000, and you can’t visit the park as freely as before. The entrance ticket and the sightseeing bus costs 200 Yuan per person.

Additionally, the Airport remains closed (the only way to access the area is by train or bus), and only a few big hotels are open outside the National Park (a lot of other hotels are still waiting to see how the situation will evolve).

Challenges of getting in and out of Jiuzhaigou

One of the challenges for any trip to Jiuzhaigou is the transportation in and out of the Northern Sichuan as, unlike most other destinations in China, the choice is quite limited.

Many people that visit Jiuzhaigou will fly in. There are daily flights from the most popular airports in the country. The three most popular cities that international travelers use when departing for Jiuzhaigou are Chengdu in Sichuan Province, Chongqing and Xi’an in Shaanxi Province.

The airport that services the area is called the Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport . It is about a two-hour drive to Jiuzhaigou National Park. There are buses from the airport to the park, but they are limited and not always reliable. The other choice is to grab a taxi, which will cost several hundred yuan.

Huanglong National Park, another nearby attraction, shares the airport with Jiuzhaigou and it’s closer by about an hour’s drive.

When planning to fly out of Jiuzhaigou it is important to schedule any connections with a long connecting window. It is not uncommon for flights to be significantly delayed upon arrival or departure due to fog that occurs frequently in this mountainous airport. The fog and delays are worse during the summer rains.

There is no train station in Jiuzhaigou, due to the terrain. Beside the plane, there are Tourist Buses that run from Chengdu with a few departures each day. The most popular is the early morning bus. Also, you can hire a private vehicle and driver.

Once arriving in Jiuzhaigou, there are taxis to help navigate around, along with some shuttle buses, but in general, the local transportation is poor. Many people choose to book a private tour so they can easily include some of the nearby attractions (more on those in a bit). The other common choice is to go alone and limit your exploration to areas within walking or taxis near Jiuzhaigou National Park exclusively.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

Jiuzhaigou is for any lover of nature. It is perhaps the most spectacular natural site in China. Its Chinese name is 九寨沟 and it can be translated as the “Valley of Nine Villages.”

This sacred land lies on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau and it’s famous for its many multi-level waterfalls, colorful lakes, and dense forest that are all encapsulated by snow-capped peaks that range in elevation from 2,000 to 4,500 m. (6,600 to 14,800 ft).

Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1992 it now attracts millions of visitors annually.

The park is constructed of several valleys, each offering a unique experience. Of the several valleys, only three are open to tourists. They are called Zechawa, Rize, and Shuzheng. There is a fourth valley named Zharu that is accessible only with special permits and is the only valley that allows camping.

To help minimize the impact of the millions of visitors that Jiuzhaigou attracts each year and preserve the pristine nature of this environment the Chinese National Park Service prohibits private vehicles from entering and has restricted where visitors are allowed to walk. There are several footbridges, elevated walkways, paved paths that travelers are expected to stay on.

It is not permitted to enter into the natural settings unless you have arranged entry into Zharu Valley.

jiuzhaigou trip

For most people, one day will feel a bit rushed especially if you do not have a guide who knows where the best spots are. The most popular tours include two full days in the park. However, if you are a photographer or painter, you may choose to never leave.

When is the best time to visit Jiuzhaigou National Park

In my eyes, a visit to Jiuzhaigou is rewarding almost any time during the year, with a few exceptions. The most popular time is the autumn months of September and October.

Be warned that during the Chinese National Day, which occurs the first week of October, the population of Jiuzhaigou explodes. There is a massive influx of domestic tourists and money. The locals that work in the tourism trade love it, but it creates pressure and stress on the environment that the government has struggled to manage.

I would advise you to avoid Jiuzhaigou at all costs during this week. Unless you enjoy swimming through a sea of people.

I would also encourage a winter trip when the temperature will range from 0° to 3°C (32 to 37.4F). However, you need to prepare well as it will be cold. This includes a winter hat, gloves, boots, etc. Also, note that many of the hotels are closed during the winter or have reduced staff.

If hot water and heat are important to you, be certain to ask and verify several times that the hotel you choose can provide it. Otherwise, book a tour with a reputable travel agency that knows which hotels are more reliable in the winter months.

As the snow melts the spring offers a lively time as the trees bud their leaves and the lakes thaw.

During the summer months, the scenery is lush and deep green. Unfortunately, many travelers are turned off by the unpredictable summer rains and wait till September or beyond to plan their trip.

Tour or no tour? Different ways to reach Jiuzhaigou National Park

There are three main ways that we see people traveling to Northern Sichuan:

Take a Private Tour

For travelers that have a finite amount of time, this is the most popular and best choice. It does have the highest cost but offers the greatest flexibility.

With a private tour, you will have a dedicated car and driver. Along with free unrestricted travel to and from Jiuzhaigou, this freedom makes it possible to visit many of the nearby sites, which will introduce later in this article.

Best private tours include a local guide. This helps to ensure that your time within the Jiuzhaigou National Park’s maze of valleys and trails is optimized to fit your time. Depending on what your interests are, from photography, bird watching, waterfalls, etc. these guides have current personal insight that is not likely to be found in a guidebook or an online travel forum.

Arranging a China private tour to Jiuzhaigou also helps to ensure that your hotels, entrance tickets, and other sundry items are managed. Making the trip more worry-free. During the peak seasons, it can be almost impossible to get a hotel room. So a local travel agency has a greater chance of securing you a comfortable room.

Huanglong National Park

Take a Group Tour

There are really no group tours to Jiuzhaigou that are targeted at international or western travelers. You will see bus tours from overseas but in most cases, they are large group private tours and not a domestic Join In Group Tour.

The biggest problem with a Jiuzhaigou group tour is, they make their profit from the ‘mandatory’ shopping stops. Yes, they are ‘mandatory’ and in some cases, the pressure to buy can be rather intense.

These tours shift away from the focus of visiting Jiuzhaigou National Park to what the next shopping stop will be. While a Group Tour is the cheapest way to visit Jiuzhaigou, I would not suggest it at any course.

A Group Tour is normally three or four days and most depart from Chengdu.

The first day is driving up to Jiuzhaigou from Chengdu. Where the guide and driver will begin to talk about the herbs, teas, meats, etc. that will be lined up for the third day’s shopping stops.

The second day is focused on you visiting within the National Park, and in most cases, your entrance ticket is included. This is a plus, as the entrance tickets are expensive by Chinese standards. In most cases, the guide and driver will help you enter the park and arrange a time to meet again at the main gate. Then suddenly vanish.

The third day, or return to Chengdu, will include scheduled stops at selected stores. The staff there is well conditioned on how best to extract cash from travelers’ wallets. Pay attention to the colored id card they will give you an entrance. Try to change it and watch the guide go crazy: the color helps the store know who gets the commission from your purchase.

Please don’t get me wrong, there are some pretty cool stores that people stop at. But having personally traveled all different styles, a group tour to Jiuzhaigou is not an experience I would want for even my foe.

One of the last points that you will hear, is everyone on the trip will complain that food rations are too small! And somehow there is never enough meat.

Travel Independently

An independent trip to Jiuzhaigou is more for the adventure-minded traveler than the faint heart. I say this given the travel situation I noted above. If you just wish to visit Jiuzhaigou National Park only, then it can be fairly straightforward. If not during the rush of peak season, where it can be very hard or impossible to get a hotel or hostel room.

However, there are so many other attractions that will likely be missed in a Group Tour or traveling independently.

Jiuzhaigou cloud sea

Activities and things to do in and around Jiuzhaigou National Park

Much of what to do at Jiuzhaigou is to admire in awe at the wonders of Mother Nature. From the multi-colored lakes to the lush foliage during the autumn.

For photographers, it truly is a paradise, an endless selection of natural landscapes. Annually many Sichuan brides and grooms will travel to Jiuzhaigou to take their wedding photos. Being a photographer myself, I would strongly encourage you to bring a tripod, but be warned that at times it can be difficult to keep others from bumping into it.

If you have time and plan ahead, hiking in Zharu valley is an endeavor that few have ever experienced. This type of trip can only be arranged when joining a private tour.

For the “polar bears,” that is people who enjoy swimming in cold weather, the lakes are off-limits. So do not get any crazy ideas.

Horse Trekking in Songpan

Other things to do near Jiuzhaigou that should not be missed

Along with Jiuzhaigou, there are several other attractions and activities that are not to be missed in Northern Sichuan. They range in the physical exertion level but again without the aid of a private car most independent travelers will be left struggling to find transportation from one place to the next.

Songpan Horse Trekking

Songpan is located southwest of Jiuzhaigou, about 100 km. (62 mi.), on the way back to Chengdu and offers a much more accessible outdoor experience.

Here you can choose to hike or ride a horse into some of the lush valleys. While not as spectacular as Jiuzhaigou it offers an outdoors experience that is otherwise not accessible in Northern Sichuan.

The horse is outfitted with Tibetan styles saddles and trips can be arranged for as short as an afternoon ride to several days of camping.

Huanglong National Park

Huanglong National Park or Yellow Dragon is the clear winner as the second most popular attraction after Jiuzhaigou. Likes its sister it is a paradise of natural beauty and its’ popular for its spectacular Five Colored Ponds.

Like Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong has pathways to help preserve the environment from erosion from the vast number of travelers it experiences each year.

Unlike Jiuzhaigou, there is a cable car, that you can choose to buy a one-way ticket for 80 Yuan that will take you up to the Five-Color Ponds. Many choose to ride up and walk the 5 km (3 mi.) down.

Once you are off the cable car it is still an additional 2 km. (1 mi.) to see the Five-Color Ponds.

One important note is the Huanglong is closed during the winter as there is a tremendous amount of snow and the pools are all covered.

Given that Huanglong is much closer to the Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport it provides some flexibility on which attraction to visit first based upon when your flight is scheduled to land.

Erdao Hai

Munigou is a good alternate plan for people looking to spend more time in Northern Sichuan. While not as popular as Huanglong it is accessible in the winter months and offers several natural landscapes.

The two main features of Munigou are different from Jiuzhaigou and offer a greater sense of diversity. They include Zhaga Waterfall and Erdao Lake. It’s mixed with the local minority cultures and it’s less crowded than the other destinations.

Aba Grasslands

The Aba Grasslands (Zoige) is perhaps the most challenging and therefore rewarding nearby attraction. Located a full day drive northwest from Jiuzhaigou these grasslands offer a stunning view with the Tibetan Plateau in the distance.

Here it is common to see Tibetan nomads living off the land with their yaks.

At times the government will limit foreigners’ ability to travel to this portion of Aba. If you are planning to travel here please contact me for the latest conditions and assistance in planning your trip.

Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center

The final nearby attraction to share resides back in Chengdu, home of the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center.

Here you can spend the morning or whole day admiring the adorable animals. While they are indigenous to Northern Sichuan, it is uncommon these days to see a panda in its natural environment of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong.

There are many other attractions to consider during any trip to Sichuan, but perhaps that is a topic for another blog post.

Picnic in Songpan

Entrance ticket and times to visit Jiuzhaigou National Park

The entrance ticket to Jiuzhaigou is one of the most expensive in China at 310 Yuan. The ticket is made up of two different parts:

Entrance Ticket of 220 Yuan

This is the compulsory ticket that everybody is required to purchase. If you wish to visit the park for more than a day you will need to purchase a new ticket each day.

Sightseeing bus ticket of 90 Yuan

While this is not required to buy, you are kind of stuck without it. The park is just too large to walk around, and since private vehicles are not permitted there is little choice. You should also note that bicycles are not permitted in the park.

The park opens daily at 7 am in the summer and 8 am in the winter. It closes all seasons at 6 pm.

There is a discount available in the wintertime on entry tickets. Generally speaking the winter is the offseason as less people will travel to China . For many domestic travelers, the colder weather is a major turn-off.

However, the frozen waterfalls and lakes with the snow-covered trees offer a great spectacle, perhaps equal to that autumn foliage.

Other “special” things you should know

There are a few more things you should take into consideration when planning your trip to Northern Sichuan and Jiuzhaigou.

High Altitude Sickness is something you should be alert to. The elevation can easily change from 2,000 to 4,500 m. (6,600 to 14,800 ft). For reference, the Airport is at 3,500 m. (11,500 ft.), Huanglong at 3,400 m. (11,200 ft.) and Jiuzhaigou at 2,000 m. (6,600 ft.) above sea level.

If you have any heart or other health conditions, I would advise you to talk with your doctor first to ensure there is no personal risk to your health.

Also, you are not allowed to sleep in the park and there is only a restaurant inside of Jiuzhaigou National Park. The food there is more expensive and lower quality than outside.

I advise you to pack your favorite snacks as you are permitted to bring food and drinks into the park. There are places throughout the park where you can purchase bottled water.

Some suggested things to include in your bag when visiting the park: sunscreen, lip balm, raincoat, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.

A trip to Jiuzhaigou should be on everyone’s bucket list as the scenery is truly breathtaking. If you are planning to travel to Western China any time soon please do not hesitate to a href=”https://www.saporedicina.com/english/china-tours-guide/#contact>contact us

Hello, I had a question regarding the bus tickets. Does anybody know if there is someone that checks if you had bought the bus ticket to use the bus once inside the bus? Someone had told me that they didn’t buy the bus ticket at the entrance and just walked to the nearest (about 10 km) bus stop and hopped on from there. Can anyone verify? I just find it kind of far-fetched. Thank you in advance.

Normally they check the ticket before you get on the bus. I won’t risk it, the tickets are cheap enough

Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide

Jiuzhaigou facts, famous for stunning natural scenery in jiuzhaigou national park.

Located in the north of Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou County, previously known as Nanping County, is part of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture . Since the opening of the Jiuzhaigou National Park in 1984, visitors have flocked to the region year by year. The distance from Jiuzhaigou county to Jiuzhaigou National Park is about 48 km (30 mi). Up to now, over 100 hotels and restaurants are available in the county. Jiuzhaigou is famous for green lakes, waterfalls, colorful forests, snow peaks, Tibetan customs and blue ices. April to November is the peak season of Jiuzhaigou tourism. Around April, Jiuzhaigou is covered with red, purple, blue and yellow flowers. From June to August, it is a good place for summer vacation because the cool climate brought by the high altitude can keep tourists away from the heat. Also it is the best time to watch the green lakes and waterfalls due to the abundant water supply. October and November sees the most brilliant Jiuzhaigou scenery as the forests are dressed in beautiful colors and all reflected in the bright lakes. Besides, visitors can experience strong Tibetan customs through Tibetan performances, traditional buildings, monasteries and Tibetan custom parks.

With some of the most beautiful and inspiring scenery on earth and some of the reserves scenic spots considered holy by the local Tibetan and Qiang people, it is no wonder a number of mysterious legends surround the wonderful landscape of Jiuzhaigou. Many people are drawn to the area for these reasons, and with the park open all year round the authorities have ensured that the fragile environment is sufficiently protected with a range of comprehensive facilities.

jiuzhaigou trip

In previous years it had been difficult for visitors to get there due to its isolated location, however this is no longer a concern due to the construction of the Jiuzhaigou Ring Way which links the reserve with Chengdu and the Jiuhuang Airport, and has made gaining access to the park a great deal easier. Jiuhuang Airport operates direct flights to/from Chengdu and Chongqing at present. About the transportation inside the county, there were sightseeing buses in the Jiuzhaigou Valley. However, the buses are suspended because the scenic area is closed now due to the earthquake. There is no train service now. However, Jiuzhaigou Railway Station, which is under construction, will open in 2019 along with the operation of the  Jiuzhaigou - Chengdu Train .

The water in Jiuzhaigou is so catching that you might be immersed in the beauty of the water at alone. If you have heard the call of Jiuzhaigou and if you want to tour Jiuzhaigou and see the legendary scenery of Huanglong, here is a travel guide to tour Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong.

Tour Jiuzhaigou – A Travel Guide to One of the Most Magical Places on Earth

, ccl source   jiuzhaigou in autumn, where is jiuzhaigou valley.

Jiuzhaigou lies in Jiuzhaigou County (formerly Nanping County), Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, North of Sichuan Province. It’s named after the nine Tibetan villages, including Shuzheng Village, Heye Village, Zechawa Village, Panxin Village, Heiguo Village, Panyazhu Village, Guwa Village, Pengbu Village and Jianpan Village. The distance from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou is about 450 km. It will take 7-8 hours by bus if you go to Jiuzhaigou from Chengdu. But it only takes about 1 hour from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by air.

Getting There

There are four direct buses from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou departing at Xinnanmen Bus Station and two buses from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station every day. You are recommended to buy a bus ticket at least a day in advance. You can buy a ticket on self-service vending machines which are available in Chengdu Hongqi Chain stores. Besides, you can buy a ticket online.

Shuttle Bus Fee

Jiuhuang Airport – Jiuzhaigou: RMB 45 (one-way ticket); RMB 80 (round-trip ticket)

Jiuhuang Airport – Huanglong: RMB 22 (one-way ticket); RMB 40 (round-trip ticket)

Now, many cities have opened direct flights to Jiuzhaigou (Jiuhuang Airport). For example, there are about 20 flights from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou every day. The flying time is around 60 minutes. The price of the one-way ticket from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou is about RMB 1540 per person.

Many people who have never been to Jiuzhaigou may think that Jiuhuang Airport is located in Jiuzhaigou. Meanwhile, Jiuhuang Airport is 50 km away from Huanglong and it takes about 1 hour from Jiuhuang Airport to Huanglong Park.

Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport is a lateral airport intended for tourism. The shuttle buses often cannot depart on time because the passengers of a flight usually cannot meet the need of a shuttle bus. The shuttle bus does not depart until it is full of people. Sometimes, the departure time of the shuttle bus will be delayed by 2-3 hours. Therefore, it is recommended to book a car to pick you up at the airport.

It cost RMB 200-250 from Jiuhuang Airport to Jiuzhaigou.

If you do not book a chartered car in advance there are taxis and private cars available for tourists at Airport Exit. The chartered fee is about RMB 300.

Tips : It is recommended to take a formal taxi at the airport for the sake of security.

Things to do in jiuzhaigou: a magical himalayan valley.

jiuzhaigou trip

There were coloured flags everywhere.

About six hours after we’d left Chengdu in Central China, the landscape started to look notably more mountainous and rural. It almost seemed Alpine, with long roads winding up mountainsides and deep valleys with water running through. But then we drove past a Buddhist temple, adorned with prayer flags, and I was reminded that we definitely weren’t in Switzerland. We were approaching the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.

jiuzhaigou trip

Four hours later, after a drive through picturesque villages, past fields of yaks and goats, and around the most stunning religious buildings, we arrived at Jiuzhaigou. The Jiuzhai Valley is nestled amongst the Min Mountains and is named after the nine Tibetan towns that are located within.

Although I could have spent days learning about Tibetan Buddhism, fascinated by the prayer flags and the gorgeous architecture of the temples, this isn’t why most people come to Jiuzhaigou. Tourists flock to the region to marvel at the stunning waters of the hills above the valley, which are always a perfect shade of aqua, interspersed by crashing waterfalls and lively rapids; they’re a must visit for nature lovers and travel photography enthusiasts.

But don’t worry if you want to get your fill of Tibetan Buddhism as well; there are local villages on the mountainside and a Buddhist temple which welcomes visitors. Prayer flags adorn the landscape, making the area seem eternally happy.

Jiuzhaigou is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Chinese cities, and maintains a very Tibetan air while not actually being in Tibet (meaning that you don’t need a special visa). It’s a gorgeous place to hike and experience a side of Chinese culture that is not often explored.

Jiuzhaigou isn’t the easiest of places to get to, but it’s without a doubt worth the journey!

Where is Jiuzhaigou?

How to Go to Jiuzhaigou – Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou

The nearest big city is Chengdu. We took a from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou there for 138 yuan one way, which takes 10 hours. We had a few hair-raising moments; our bus driver seemed to have an obsession with overtaking people, even on very tight bends, and the constant horn-sounding didn’t make for a relaxing trip!

If you decide to take the bus (bearing in mind that only other way to get to the valley is to fly into Jiuzhaigou airport from Chengdu – which I think is about 10x the price!), make sure that you bring tissue (the toilets probably won’t have loo roll), some cash to buy snacks on the way and nerves of steel!

Also do consider that you might be delayed; sometimes the mountain roads can get very blocked with cars and there’s not much to do other than sit and wait.

Where to Stay in Jiuzhaigou

jiuzhaigou trip

Jiuzhaigou is home to many reasonably-priced hotels. We stayed at Caiyun Hotel, where a room for 2 cost about 130 yuan/ £15/ $19.50 per night. All in all, it was a good hotel, with clean rooms offering great views, en-suite bathrooms and great wifi – each room had its own router!

There is one hostel in Jiuzhaigou called ‘The Friendship Hostel’, which offers beds for 46 yuan / £5.30/ $7 per night.

Remember that many hotels in Jiuzhaigou are for Chinese residents only, so it is wise to book your accommodation before getting to Jiuzhaigou!

What to Eat in Jiuzhaigou

jiuzhaigou trip

Like any touristy mountainous town, there are plenty of places to eat in Jiuzhaigou. Restaurants sell all sorts of Chinese food, often cooked in delicious Tibetan spices (I don’t know what the Chinese do to the humble aubergine, but it’s absolutely unreal ).

There’s also a market which sells cheap street food. I got a little obsessed with these tortilla/ pancake/ omelette things that made a great lunch and there’s a great deal of the Chinese speciality of ‘things on a stick’.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan visiting China, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem in Jiuzhaigou. Although the area is Buddhist, Tibetans do tend to eat more meat than southern Buddhists, but vegetables and potatoes on a stick are readily available, and the mystery tortilla/ pancake/ omelettes are very filling (I’m pretty sure that they contain egg though, so vegans would have to avoid). Most of the menus have pictures which makes ordering vegetable dishes easy!

Things to do in Jiuzhaigou National Park

Exploring Jiuzhaigou for a day will set you back about 260 yuan / £30 / $39 (including shuttle bus service). This is pretty steep but, as I’m sure you can agree from my pictures, it is well worth it!

We actually spent two days in the park itself, which obviously turned out to be quite expensive but it meant that we weren’t cramming everything in. Hiking Jiuzhaigou can be done in a day, but I would really recommend that you do not skip looking around the local village and Buddhist temple, as they were particular highlights for me.

The park opens at 7am. From the bottom, you can take a shuttle all the way to the top and walk back down. The buses stop at 5pm.

Jiuzhaigou Attractions

I didn’t know that this much blue was possible…

It’s hard to tire of gazing over Jiuzhaigou’s azure lakes. Known as a place where fairies live, a day at Jiuzhaigou definitely will make you feel like you’ve entered some kind of never-land; and admiring them is definitely one of the best things to do in Jiuzhaigou.

jiuzhaigou trip

Legend has it that a panda used to drink from this lake, hence the name. Unbelievably blue and with the backdrop of the high peaks, it is a stunning backdrop for photos.

The shallowness of Arrow Lake means that you can see everything that is underneath its crystal clear waters in perfect detail. Fallen trees and roots lay in the lake while fish swim amongst them. It’s fascinating to marvel at the amazing visibility of the water!

Mirror Lake

jiuzhaigou trip

As the name suggests, Mirror Lake has the most fantastic reflection of any in the park. This view is best in the morning, and can be seen as you incline on the bus. Later in the day, Mirror Lake is just as photogenic and an ideal scenic spot for a stroll and gorgeous photos.

Pearl Waterfall

jiuzhaigou trip

The most dramatic waterfall in the park, Pearl Waterfall is every geologists’ dream, and one of the best Jiuzhaigou attractions. The falls are huge and crash down from many different areas on the rock.

Sleeping Dragon Lake

Named after the yellow shape which, from above, looks like a sleeping dragon, this lake is on the Southernly side of the hill and is less frequented by tourists.

If you are visiting Jiuzhaigou in autumn, the leaves on the trees on one of the mountains reflect to give this lake a tiger pattern. Outside of the summer months, it is a more peaceful spot for walking by and admiring.

Tibetan Buddhist Temple

jiuzhaigou trip

While most people come to Jiuzhaigou for the lakes, the temple was my favourite of all the things to do in Jiuzhaigou. While I was walking through the forest, prayer flags begin to litter the trees around. As I got closer to the temple, more and more of them were around, until I began to feel as if I was walking through a rainbow.

Then I came to a clearing and was graced with this stunning Buddhist Temple. The architecture was marvellous, and I could enter it free of charge, where I was free to admire the Buddhist statues and walk up onto the roof to take some ariel snaps.

Shuzeng Tibetan Village

jiuzhaigou trip

There are many Tibetan villages in the area, but Shuzeng makes for an ideal break from all the lakes and waterfalls! Just like the temple, it is adorned with prayer flags and offers an insight to traditional mountain life – although there do seem to be a lot more souvenir shops than you’d catch in a typical Tibetan Village! There’s a smaller place of worship where you are welcome to burn some incense while praying to the Buddha, and just outside a colourful prayer wheel.

jiuzhaigou trip

After two days in Jiuzhaigou national park, we went to Huang Long (meaning ‘yellow dragon’ in Chinese). Huang Long boasts a series of calcite pools, which offers a different kind of beautiful water view.

The pools are in a valley, which is reached by travelling via cable car up the mountain and then hiking down.

When we were there, the weather wasn’t great, which made the colossal 7-hour round trip not really worth it. I can imagine that the place is magical if the sun is out, but I would recommend checking the weather and maybe not bothering if it isn’t looking great.

Another thing to remember at Huang Long is the altitude is even greater here, so take it easy at the top!

Local Villages and Towns

One thing that I wish we had done is explored the villages and towns surrounding Jiuzhaigou. There are so many interesting places; one town had both a mosque and a Buddhist temple, another had a gorgeous prayer wheel, another contained buildings dating a thousand years. This was all interspersed with scenic mountain views, complete with yaks, goats and local people selling their goods.

You can rent a car with a driver for 400 yuan for a four-seater or 600 yuan for a six-seater for all day. However, these drivers will most likely only speak Mandarin, so if you don’t speak Chinese make sure that you have the places where you want to go to written down

Which way to hike in Jiuzhaigou?

jiuzhaigou trip

You can either take a bus to Arrow Lake and walk down to the visitors’ centre, take a bus to Long Lake and walk around and then take a bus back down to the visitors’ centre, or just walk down from the visitors’ centre.

The Arrow Lake – Visitors’ Centre walk is undoubtedly the most scenic, and definitely should be seen by any Jiuzhaigou tourist. However, do be prepared to battle through crowds to see these spots!

Long Lake is a much shorter route as you will have to take a bus down halfway, and can be done as an add-on to another walk.

The visitors’ centre- exit walk is much less touristy, but has less perfectly blue waters. It is still very pretty, with a merge of woodland and mountains, and makes for a beautiful walk, but the main reason I would recommend not skipping this is because the Buddhist Temple and Shuzeng Village are on this trail.

If you only have one day to explore the park, I would advise walking around Arrow Lake, Panda Lake and Pearl Waterfall in the morning and walking or getting a bus down to the Shuzeng Village and the temple in the afternoon. If you have two days, the first day can be spent exploring everything above the visitors’ centre and the second walking down from the visitors’ centre and seeing the village and temple.

Hiking Jiuzhaigou difficulty

The large majority of Jiuzhaigou has a man-made walkway, making it accessible for almost everybody. Many of the areas have no handrail, so beware that it can get very pushy at times!

Also needing consideration is the fact that Jiuzhaigou is at high altitude. To combat altitude sickness, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and if you feel as if you’re too high, go down! This may cause problems for people with breathing or heart difficulties.

As the hike below the tourist centre is less frequented by travellers, the path is sometimes unpaved and uneven. Generally, it is still fine to hike on but it could cause some problems for the less mobile!

Buses are always an option; they take tourists both up and down the mountain, stopping by most of the main scenic areas and coming every few minutes.

I hiked with six family members aged 14-70, and only the 70 year old struggled with the altitude. For those who are generally mobile and fit, it is fine.

Jiuzhaigou Weather

jiuzhaigou trip

Unlike a lot of China, Jiuzhaigou enjoys all four seasons. It is magical to visit during all seasons; during Spring the beauty of new plants and life is all around, Summer brings gorgeous sunshine, the changing leaves of Autumn give the lakes a colourful feel and the mountains are covered in snow in Winter.

It can be both quite cold and very hot during summer, so take a jacket for the morning and suncream to apply if the sun comes out! Waterproofs are also recommended, as rain has a habit of appearing out of nowhere!

Jiuzhaigou as an eco-friendly park

jiuzhaigou trip

I was incredibly impressed with Jiuzhaigou’s efforts to keep the park pristine and unspoilt! There are very few people who litter, but anything left on the ground is quickly removed. I also noticed lots of plaques around the resort advocating responsible tourism, with ideas about how to travel in a sustainable manner. The staff at Jiuzhaigou make a real effort to keep the place beautiful, and although the entry fee is a little on the costly side, it is something I am willing to pay for this paradise to be preserved.

Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide

I’ve now put ‘Tibet proper’ right to the top of my ‘to visit’ list! I was enthralled by the scenery and the culture and loved the colourfulness of the area. After three days there, I boarded a bus back to Chengdu, but really I wanted to continue down, across the Tibetan Plateau, into the Himalayas and beyond…

If you are suffering from Chinese city fatigue and need somewhere serene to escape to, get yourself off to Jiuzhaigou. It is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of urban Chinese life, and I’m already planning my return to this area of the world.

Jiuzhaigou Travel and Tours

Jiuzhaigou Valley Has 114 Pretty Lakes

Jiuzhaigou consists of three connecting valleys shaping like a “Y”. Zechawang Valley is located on the left and Rize Valley on the right. The two valleys meet together from north to south, then form the Shuzheng Valley. Most attractions in Jiuzhaigou spread in these three valleys, and can be visited both by convenient sightseeing bus and tourist walking path.

Shuzheng Valley

Entering Jiuzhaigou Gate, you will first reach Shuzheng Vally which lasts about 14.5km. There are not many attractions and tourists on the beginning part of Shuzheng Valley, which is a great chance to hike the tourist path. But don’t spend too much time here, because you have to visit other two valleys in a day. From the Jiuzhaigou gate, apart from several large lakes – Sparking Lake, Grass Lake, Tiger Lake and Rhino Lake, there are other more than 40 beautiful small lakes. There is also a sideway to a featured Bon Buddhist monastery – Zharu Monastery. You may don’t know Tibetans in Jiuzhaigou, Songpan area are followers of traditional Bon Buddhism which is quite different from Tibetan Buddhism, for instance, the turning direction of praying wheel is anticlockwise, while the tradition in Tibetan Buddhism is a clockwise way. The most famous attraction of Shuzheng Valley is the Nuorilang Waterfall . It is 20 meters high and 320 meters wide. It is recorded as the widest highland waterfall in China, the widest travertine-topped waterfall in the world. Above the waterfall are Nuorilang Lakes and Shuzheng Lakes are serious lakes surrounded by colorful trees.

Rize Valley

Rize Valley is the right branch of “Y”. It is also the most beautiful alley compared to other two valleys. Stretching 18km from Nuorilang Waterfall to the end, the valley has most fantastic lakes in Jiuzhaigou, including the Mirror Lake, Peal Lake, Five – Flower Lake, Panda Lake, Jianzhu Lake and Swan Lake, etc. So you need to leave enough time to explore this valley, though you can’t actually really see the pandas in Panda Lake, perl in the Pearl Lake, or swan on the Swan Lake. But the changing stunning landscape along the valley will make your eyes and camera busy, especially the colorful Five – Flower Lake which reflects many colors in different seasons.

Zechawang Valley

Zechawang Valley is the left branch of “Y”. It is the highest-altitude sightseeing route in Jiuzhaigou. The best attractions are Five-color Lake and Long Lake. The Five-color Lake doesn’t really have five colors, in fact, it reflects different colors of blue under the rich and bright sunlight. Long Lake is the largest lake in Jiuzhaigou, covering more than 7.5km with the largest depth of 103m. Hiking from Five-color Lake to Long Lake is the best experience in Zechawang Valley.

Nestled in the mountainous region of southwest China is one of the country’s hidden gems and most beautiful national park – Jiuzhaigou National Park. This is a picturesque fairyland, away from the hustle and bustle of the major tourist cities, like Beijing and Shanghai . Here in the northern part of Sichuan, immerse yourself in the tranquillity of nature.  Take in the charming scenery of colorful forests and lakes, magnificent waterfalls, and tall, snow-capped mountains.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

While Jiuzhaigou is a must for lovers of the outdoors, getting there can be tricky. In fact, it can only be reached from the Sichuan Province´s capital, Chengdu – home of the giant panda .

To ensure you have the most pleasant experience throughout your journey, we have put together the ultimate travel guide to Jiuzhaigou National Park.

Jiuzhaigou National Park – All you Need to Know

Jiuzhai Valley, locally known as Jiuzhaigou (Chinese for “Nine Village Valley”), is located in the Min Shen mountain range in Sichuan. You’ll find yourself in a network of valleys fabled for its vivid, blue-green lakes, stunning waterfalls, unique landforms, and even giant pandas. This place is like a real-life fairytale.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

Below we have detailed all you need to know – from when to visit, where to stay, what to see, and more.

This area was unknown to people outside the valley until 1975 when the area was heavily logged until the Chinese government turned it into a national park in 1982 and officially opened Jiuzhaigou National Park for tourist in 1985 and the park was added to UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992.

Best Time to Visit Jiuzhaigou China

Jiuzhaigou is renowned for having four distinct seasons. Each season the valleys boast something new. Snow and icy lakes in winter, flowers in spring, greenery in the summer, and colorful leaves during autumn.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

To many, the best time to visit Jiuzhaigou is during autumn, as the mountains and valleys boast a splendid autumn palette. The great vistas of yellow, orange, reds, and greens beautifully contrast against the valley’s turquoise lakes. You will experience warm days and cold nights. Note that the difference in temperature is large, dropping from 18ºC (64ºF) to below 8ºC (46ºF) – so be sure to pack accordingly.

Jiuzhaigou National Park china

Jiuzhaigou also presents stunning scenery in spring, summer, and winter. In the spring, expect to see verdant mountains, as the winter snow begins to melt. If you’re hoping for a less crowded trip, this is a great time to visit.

As summer approaches, so does the peak season. While the crowds are larger during this time, the scenery is more than worthwhile, as the forests turn greener and dots of flowers begin to bloom.

During winter, Jiuzhaigou valley turns into a winter wonderland. Everything is covered in snow, and even the waterfalls completely freeze.

It measures 270 meters in width, and covers an altitude of 2,365 meters. It is also one of the most popular attractions, attracting visitors from home and abroad.

Pearl Shoal Waterfall may be the park’s most beautiful waterfall, and sits surrounded by tall, green pine trees. Much like Nuorilang Waterfall, it is fairly wide. Shuzheng Waterfall is a smaller waterfall located between the Tiger and Wolong Lakes in Muni Valley. It measures around 62 meters wide and features a 15-meter drop. Despite its size, it is one of the most deafening and ferocious waterfalls. The sound echoes through the valley, similar to how the roar of a tiger or lion would.

The lakes here are crystal clear and green all year round – which beautifully reflects the scenic surroundings.  As the seasons change, the lakes take on different hues and tones. Jiuzhaigou National Park

Blue Ice & Snow-capped Mountains

During the cold winter months, the many flowing waterfalls found throughout the park begin to freeze and solidify. This results in a beautiful display of ice curtains, ice sheets, and ice balls. What’s truly unique about this phenomenon is the way in which the light transforms the ice into a transparent blue. This spectical is rare and only occurs for a dozen days a year, between late January and early February.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

To accompany the stunning series of blue ice sculptures found throughout the park, there is also plenty of snow covering the valley. What Jiuzhaigou is well-renowned for, however, is its snow-capped peaks which silently guard this dream-like valley.

Outstanding Universal Value

The Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area is a reserve of exceptional natural beauty with spectacular jagged alpine mountains soaring above coniferous forest around a fairyland landscape of crystal clear, strange-coloured blue, green and purplish pools, lakes, waterfalls, limestone terraces, caves and other beautiful features. These include a number of karst formations; indeed the area is a " natural museum " for alpine karst hydrology and research . Covering 72,000 ha in the northern part of Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou preserves a series of important forest ecosystems including old-growth forests which provide important habitat for numerous threatened species of plants and animals, including the giant panda and takin. Attaining heights of 4,752 m in the southern Minshan Mountains, Jiuzhaigou also contains an important number of well-preserved quaternary glacial remnants with great scenic value.

Criterion (vii): Jiuzhaigou is renowned for its scenic and aesthetic majesty. Its fairyland landscape of numerous lakes, waterfalls, and limestone terraces, with their attractive, clear, mineral-rich waters, set in the spectacular alpine mountains with a highly diverse forest ecosystem, demonstrates remarkable natural beauty.

Jiuzhaigou contains all the elements necessary to demonstrate and protect its natural beauty, and is surrounded by buffer zones. Although the site was partially degraded by previous forestry activities, it is recovering through tree planting and strict management which includes protecting water quality, air quality, and forests. At time of inscription some 800 residents in six villages lived inside the site, with the policy being to seek voluntary agreement to gradually reduce the human population within the reserve.

As a national park and a national nature reserve, Jiuzhaigou is protected by national and provincial laws and regulations, which secure the long-term management and conservation of the Property. In 2004, the Sichuan Provincial Regulation on World Heritage Protection in Sichuan and the Regulation on Implementing Sichuan Provincial Regulation on World Heritage Protection in Aba Autonomous Prefecture became law, which provided a stricter basis for protection of the property.

The Administration Bureau of the Jiuzhaigou World Heritage Site, established in 2006, ensures the site complies with Aba Prefecture’s Guidelines of Implementing Sichuan Provincial Regulations on World Heritage Protection. This Administration Bureau contains 21 departments, including a natural protection department, a multi-disciplinary science department, a planning and construction department, and a resident management office. A General Plan for Jiuzhaigou National Park is in place and approved by the national government, which provides a framework for the protection and management of the park, including a detailed monitoring plan for park resources. Water resources, biodiversity, forest pests and diseases, and weather and climate are all monitored under this plan. In addition, the plan provides for protection of biodiversity, traditional culture, and the environment under increased tourism development. As part of the monitoring and protection of Jiuzhaigou, the Science Department is intimately involved in collaborative research with both domestic and international universities and researchers. Important areas of research and monitoring include the evolution of Jiuzhaigou’s tufa deposits; air and water quality; archaeology; meadow reforestation and biodiversity; and human-landscape interactions. The results of these research projects form the basis for new management policies. The continuing growth in tourism is a challenge and of concern, and many remedial actions to control the effects of human activities have been undertaken based on the research and monitoring projects.

Jiuzhaigou National Park is a nature reserve in the north of Sichuan, a province in south western China. It is known for its many multi-level waterfalls and colorful lakes.Stretching over the northern part of Sichuan as a jagged alpine valley, Jiuzhaigou offers a spectacular landscape with the composition of turquoise waters, bouncing streams, flying waterfalls and lush forest surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Its nickname is "Jiuzhai Paradise". The remoteness doesn't prevent it from becoming a hot tourist destination.

Hiking in The Shuzheng Valley

The Shuzheng Valley is the northern and branch of Jiuzhaigou. It ends after 14.5 km (9 mi) at the Y-shaped intersection of the three gullies. Going downhill from the intersection to the mouth of the valley, visitors encounter the following attractions. They are Nuorilang Falls, Nuorilang Lakes, Shuzheng Lakes, Rhinoceros Lake, Tiger Lake, Sleeping Dragon Lake, and Reed Lake. These attractions are intensive. It is good to travel on foot instead of taking bus.

The mouth of the valley is the first station and the Jiuzhaigou administration and station are set here. You need to buy tickets and bus tickets here and then go to the Jiuzhaihou from here. In the busy season, you will fine that people stand in a lone queue waiting to buy tickets. If you don not want to waste time on queuing for tickets, you should get up early to buy tickets. The mouth of Shuzheng Valley, with a height of 1900 meters, is the gate of Jiuzhaigou Valley. The topography of valley mouth is relatively low-lying and there is a lotic stream in front of it. You can buy admission ticket at the valley mouth. After you enter the gate, you walk along a five-kilometer asphalt road. With the lotic stream, you can get to the Lotus Leaf Village. From Lotus Leaf Village, you will successively encounter bonsai beach, Reed Lake, Double Dragon Lake, Fire Lake, Sleeping Dragon Lake, Shuzheng Lakes, Shuzheng Fall, Shuzheng Village, and Rhinoceros Lake and so on. Hiking in Rize Valley

The 18 km (11 mi) long Rize Valley is the south-western branch of Jiuzhaigou. It is the right side of the Y shape. It contains the largest variety of sites. Going downhill from its highest point, you will pass the following sites: The Primeval Forest, Swan Lake, Grass Lake, Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake, Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal, Mirror Lake, Nuotilang Lake, Nuorilang Falls. From the Primeval Forest to Nuotilang, this traveling line is the best among all the lines. The scenery in Rize Valley is very beautiful but the weather changes frequently. When traveling around Rize Valley, most visitors take a traveling bus to the Primeval Forest, and then hike from up to down, and finally get to the Mirror Lake. When you get to the Mirror Lake, you can enjoy the beautiful reflection scenery in the lake. The best time to take photos of the reelection scenery is before 9:00 am and at 16:00 pm.

Hiking in the Zechawa Gully

The Zechawa Gully is the south-eastern branch of Jiuzhaigou. It is left side of the Y shape. It is approximately the same length as Rize gully (18 km) but climbs to a higher altitude (3150 m at the Long Lake). Going downhill from its highest point, it features the following sites: Long Lake, Five-Color Pond, and the Seasonal Lakes. Reportedly, Long Lake has no outgoing waterways, getting its water from snowmelt and losing it from seepage. Local folklore features a monster in its depths. Five-Color Pond is one of the smallest but most spectacular bodies of water in Jiuzhaigou lakes. Despite its very modest dimensions and depth, it has a richly colored underwater landscape with some of the brightest and clearest waters in the area.
