Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Tri-Rail eyes expansion service to the VA center from its Mangonia Park station

R IVIERA BEACH — Tri-Rail is taking another look at having its trains travel westward from its Mangonia Park station to the VA Medical Center, one of the Palm Beach County's largest employers. The line would serve employees as well as the thousands of veterans who receive services at the VA hospital every year.

David Dech, executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, the agency that operates Tri-Rail , said the authority is assessing the costs of having its trains travel the 3 miles from the Mangonia Park station to the VA complex in Riviera Beach.

"This all very preliminary," Dech said, "but it is something that we would very much like to see happen."

Dech discussed the possibility of the VA Medical Center service during a March 15 joint meeting of the Treasure Coast and South Florida Regional Planning councils. One stumbling block is coming to terms with CSX, the owner of the tracks that run to the VA hospital.

CSX's rail network stretches across 23 states, including the southern reaches of Florida, where it has a major presence. In 1995, the transportation authority unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a deal with CSX to use its tracks for a Mangonia-VA Medical Center connection. CSX called on Tri-Rail to buy the line for $11 million, but the authority said the figure was too high.

"We need to work out something with CSX," said Dech. "Depending on what our study shows, we can hopefully do that."

How would a Tri-Rail train expansion be funded?

Another issue is funding. Palm Beach County would need to create a permanent funding source to pay for the project through a transportation surtax.

County commissioners have already said they would consider allowing voters in November 2026 to decide whether such a tax should be imposed. Broward and Miami-Dade counties already have a transportation surtax, and their transit operations are much more extensive.

Dech also disclosed that Tri-Rail will be building a $50 million light-maintenance facility to service its trains in Mangonia Park. The 8,000-square-foot facility will include an automated train-wash operation.

Meanwhile, Tri-Rail reported that weekday ridership in February averaged 15,000, matching the pre-COVID figure set four years ago. A record was set for weekend ridership in February, nearing 8,000 passengers and a single-day record was set for Feb. 24, when 10,129 passengers rode the trains.

Tri-Rail recently expanded service by including a stop at MiamiCentral Station, providing passengers with a new connection to downtown Miami. The service was introduced on Jan. 13, and has grown from 100 to more than 300 daily passengers in its first few weeks of service.

Biden announces $3.3 billion AI investment by Microsoft at scaled-back Foxconn site Trump once touted

President Joe Biden traveled Wednesday to Wisconsin to announce a $3.3 billion investment by Microsoft to build an artificial intelligence data center.

The data center will be built on the property of a planned $10 billion Foxconn facility that Donald Trump touted during his presidency as a major revival of tech manufacturing in the U.S.

But those plans never fully materialized. Foxconn, based in Taiwan, later drastically scaled back plans for the factory, which Trump once called “ the eighth wonder of the world ,” reducing the number of new jobs from 13,000 to the roughly 1,000 spots that are filled now, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported .

In remarks Wednesday at Gateway Technical College in Sturtevant, in Racine County, Biden took aim at Trump multiple times for his "failed promises" about Foxconn, although he didn't mention his predecessor by name.

Biden said the failed Foxconn project during Trump's presidency left Wisconsin residents and workers behind, adding that it led to the bulldozing of 100 homes and farms and wasted hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.

“They dug a hole with those golden shovels, and then they fell into it," Biden said.

"Foxconn turned out to be just that — a con. Go figure," he added.

Biden touted his administration’s "investing in America" agenda, which includes commitments to rebuild roads and bridges, developments in clean energy and creating $866 billion in private-sector investment nationwide as part of efforts to revitalize American manufacturing.

Biden hailed Microsoft’s investment in the AI data center as a “transformative” investment in infrastructure, especially for the people of Racine, who he said will have the opportunity to get training for new high-paying jobs that don’t require four-year college degrees.

“During the previous administration, my predecessor made promises which he broke more than kept, left a lot of people behind in communities like Racine,” he said. “On my watch, we make promises and we keep promises, and we leave no one behind.”

Microsoft’s investment in the AI data center is expected to employ 2,300 union construction workers and create 2,000 permanent jobs over time, the White House said , adding that nearly 4,000 jobs have been added in Racine, a third of them in manufacturing, and 177,000 in Wisconsin since Biden took office.

Microsoft also plans to partner with Gateway Technical College in Wisconsin to develop a training facility to prepare 1,000 residents for data center jobs and roles in science, technology, engineering and math by 2030, with the aim of employing up to 2,000 people in permanent roles at its Racine facility, the White House said. It will also invest in training 1,000 business leaders to adopt AI in their operations.

The Trump campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the economy during Biden’s presidency has been worse compared with his time in office, often pointing to rising inflation and interest rates in recent months.

Biden and administration officials have recently traveled to key battleground states to highlight his economic record, such as legislation investing in infrastructure and clean energy, which Biden has said leads to the creation of more well-paid jobs based in the U.S.

Paris Promised the Olympics Would Be Accessible. The Clock Is Ticking.

The city, which put inclusivity at the center of its bid, has improved access for people with disabilities, but with the opening ceremony about 12 weeks away, obstacles remain.

During a trip to Paris last November, Samantha Renke just couldn’t seem to find a taxi that could accommodate her motorized wheelchair.

“Every time I logged on, it just kept saying, ‘Unavailable, unavailable, unavailable,’” Ms. Renke said, recounting her struggle to book an accessible cab using the G7 taxi app . Eating out was also a problem for Ms. Renke, a 38-year-old British actress and disability campaigner who has a genetic condition commonly known as brittle bones: Too few restaurants had step-free access.

As Paris prepares to welcome around 15 million visitors — an estimated 350,000 with disabilities — for the Olympics and Paralympics, the city is still working to fulfill its promise to make itself “universally accessible” before the opening ceremony, on July 26.

“Paris will be accessible. We are rising to the challenge,” said Fadila Khattabi , the minister delegate for disabled people.

Paris put inclusivity and accessibility at the center of its bid to host the Summer Games, and the city has made a great deal of headway. For example, the newly built 128-acre Olympic and Paralympic Village , hailed by the organizers and advocacy groups as a shining example of universal design, offers accessible buildings, multisensory signage and zones for assistance dogs. The city plans to have 1,000 wheelchair-accessible taxis by the time the Games open (it had just 250 in 2022), and Uber will increase its fleet of accessible vehicles to 170, from 40.

Despite this progress, advocacy groups like APF France Handicap are concerned that the city remains unprepared for visitors with disabilities. For example, said Pascale Ribes, the group’s president, train and airline companies need to be notified in advance to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs.

And even that isn’t always enough, explained Ms. Ribes, who uses a wheelchair: Recently, she said, staff members at a Paris airport refused to bring her personal wheelchair to the jet bridge after a domestic flight. Another time she almost missed her connecting flight waiting for promised assistance.

A new urgency

France’s first law mandating accessibility in public spaces dates back to 1975, but effective enforcement has been a challenge. The Olympics and Paralympics have brought new urgency to the issue. “It’s not just accessibility for people with reduced mobility,” said Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, in an interview last month. It is about all disabilities, including sensory disabilities. “This will be a very important legacy of the Games,” she added.

Lamia El Aaraje , the deputy mayor in charge of universal accessibility and people with disabilities, has worked to make shops, schools, public services, cultural and sports facilities, and buses and trams accessible across the city. In the last 10 months, at least 1,750 bus shelters have been renovated to be compatible with bus wheelchair ramps.

Unfortunately, even this hasn’t always made life easier for people with disabilities. Ms. Ribes recounts instances when buses have parked too far from the curb, making it impossible for the ramp to reach the sidewalk. On crowded buses, wheelchair users may have difficulty gaining access to the two places designated for them.

The Olympics and Paralympics have also driven change at the city’s two main airports, which have added changing areas, sensory rooms and zones for assistance dogs. The airports are also working toward a long-term goal: transitioning from assisting passengers to removing the barriers that prevent disabled fliers from being autonomous; this includes letting passengers use their own wheelchairs, instead of airport wheelchairs, on jet bridges.

The city’s extensive Metro system poses its own special challenges for visitors with disabilities, with only one line (No. 14) fully accessible. This line, part of the ambitious Grand Paris Express project, will serve Orly Airport this summer. Other lines incorporate tactile paving, which has textures that help blind and visually impaired people, and more than half offer audio and visual announcements inside the trains.

Two suburban lines, RER A and B are also considered accessible by the regional transport agency. RER B serves both airports, though Ms. Ribes says people with disabilities still often need assistance on this line. For the Games, the city will also offer what Ms. Ribes considers temporary solutions: 200 shuttles for wheelchair users and their companions between Paris train stations and sports sites.

‘The law is not enough’

Since the 2012 Games in London, there has been a significant shift in the Olympics’ approach to accessibility. For those Games, access was integrated into the construction of new sites. But starting with the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, a big move toward sustainability meant that Paris 2024 used more existing venues instead of building new ones. This has posed both challenges and opportunities for accessibility.

The Paris 2024 committee has reserved 280,000 tickets for spectators with disabilities, and the venues themselves will be accessible. Many, but not all, of the events will have audio descriptions in French and English, and the organizers are being as inclusive as possible, said Julien Zéléla, a board member for the French Federation for the Blind .

French regulations require 4 percent of hotel rooms to be accessible, but the total number of such rooms in Paris is unknown. Airbnb (which has 13 accessibility filters) and Vrbo (which has a wheelchair filter) also offer accessible listings in the Paris region.

The Paralympian and wheelchair rugby player Ryadh Sallem acknowledges that hotels are making efforts to be more accessible, but said, “When we want to host a major competition, it becomes very problematic; sometimes we need to book several hotels” for a group of athletes.

Despite the progress, one barrier to accessibility remains stubbornly persistent: public attitudes.

“The law is not enough. We really need to change mentalities,” Ms. Ribes said. For example, cabs have refused to pick her up, she said, telling her that her wheelchair would dirty the vehicle’s interior. Last year, an Uber driver was accused of attacking a blind man for getting into his car with a guide dog. Since then, Uber has made its 40,000 drivers in France watch a short disability awareness video . In anticipation of the Games, other companies, including the operator of Paris’s airports, the Accor hotel group and the G7 taxi service are providing their employees with training on disability awareness.

With the Games about three months away, Mr. Sallem is cautiously optimistic about their long-term benefits for the city. The Olympics and Paralympics have made everyone think of accessibility “as an investment,” he said, “a project for the future.”

Bike to work and take TravelSmart for a spin

The UNMC and Nebraska Medicine TravelSmart program offers special amenities to registered bicyclists, including improvements made to the bike storage room and locker room facilities in Annex 22.

Registered bicyclists have the following amenities available:

• Free indoor, secure bike parking and access to a locker room in Annex 22 building, located at the corner of Saddle Creek Road and Emile Street.
• Free access to showers and lockers in the Center for Healthy Living.
• Access to a free ride home (or to a doctor’s office, hospital or a dependent’s school or day care) when unforeseen emergencies occur.
• Access to outdoor bike racks located throughout campus.

In Annex 22, a bike storage room is dedicated solely for bicycles. In addition, the Annex 22 locker rooms have been improved with added signage, newly repaired ceiling tiles, fans and door entry.

Highlights of other improvements:

• Upgraded security measures. Card access was installed for entry into the room and there is a security camera.
• Upgraded lighting to motion-detection LED lights.
• Installation of a bicycle fix-it station to do repairs or fill bike tires with air.

For Bike to Work Week (May 13-19) and Bike to Work Day (May 17), the TravelSmart Program is offering 50 annual Heartland Bike Share memberships to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine students, faculty and staff.

BSA opens Center for Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy

BSA Health System and BSA Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic leaders held an unveiling and ribbon cutting celebration for their new BSA Center for Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy (CATE) at the BSA hospital Thursday afternoon.

The new center, located on the first floor of the hospital, utilizes state-of-the-art technology in diagnosing and treating digestive system disorders and other gastrointestinal (GI) procedures.

"This is our first Center for Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy in the panhandle. We are treating individuals with advanced GI issues, such as ERCP's, biliary issues, and colon issues. We are saving people from having to have surgery and providing a lot of endoscopic work," Glenda Harris, Assistant Chief Nursing officer at BSA, said.

BSA said that in the past, many individuals had to travel as far as Dallas or Lubbock to receive these procedures, but now the health system has the space and means to diagnose, treat, care for, and rehabilitate these patients locally with the opening of the center.

"Previously this was not offered in Amarillo; we are the first in our area able to perform these type of procedures. We are treating some advanced esophageal illnesses. We are treating large polyps in which a person would typically have to undergo a surgery to have them removed. We are not only now able to provide those surgeries locally, but allow the patients to go home the day of and heal in the comfort of their own home, all while working to decrease cancer incidents here in the panhandle," Harris said.

Previously, BSA was able to perform approximately 20 of these procedures annually. Since the establishment of CATE, BSA estimates that they will have the ability to perform as many as 400 procedures annually.

"We already have patients; we've seen a sort of boom in patients. We've needed this so badly here in the panhandle and are now able to offer it with all new equipment, supplies and amazing staff," Harris said.

The space features 12 pre- and post-procedure bays, along with three procedure rooms, including an advanced therapeutic endoscopy suite. The center is staffed by a team of experienced, highly skilled professionals at BSA. This team includes gastroenterologists, advanced endoscopists, a pancreaticobiliary surgeon, interventional radiologists, medical and surgical oncologists, GI pathologists and nurses.

"We are now able to provide the full spectrum of therapeutic endoscopy, which includes a large variety of procedures that are in the interface between medicine and surgery, which ultimately means we are able to more often avoid major medical procedures for a lot of patients through the new renovation," said BSA Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic Gastroenterologist Haq Nawaz, MD.

"A lot of the work that we do includes follow ups, and we are now able to provide those locally, resulting in less travel from our patients. That means we are able to support even more of our local medical community, now able to refer our patients locally for therapy and the like, which is an added contribution this center created for the community," Nawaz added.

According to BSA, Nawaz played a major role in the creation of CATE, having moved to Amarillo from Maine approximately two years ago, and he began discussing the creation of the center, helping to build the treatment for more advanced patients, and the training of CATE staff.

Advanced endoscopic procedures performed at the center include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for managing benign or malignant pancreaticobiliary disorders; cholangioscopy / pancreatoscopy for direct visualization of the bile duct and pancreatic duct; endoscopic ultrasound for staging and sampling of gastrointestinal tumors and pancreaticobiliary interventions; colonoscopy with endoscopic mucosal resection or submucosal dissection for removing large colon polyps; and EMR and radiofrequency ablation for treating dysplastic Barrett’s esophagus.
