I’ll bet you’re in for a pleasant surprise!  Welcome to our vibrant, exhilarating, broken-but-beautiful city with its short, rich history, people of every colour and creed, plenty of trees and outdoor spaces, museums, galleries, shops and restaurants – and a buzzing night life, too.

So get ready to explore on foot or by car; take in the sights, sounds and smells – and let Africa sink into your soul.

Our Popular Walks and Tours

johannesburg tours

HALF-DAY & FULL-DAY TOURS

4 hrs to 8 hrs

In a vehicle, we can cover more ground than on a walking tour, so you might like to travel anywhere from Sandton to Soweto and fit in lots of history, culture, street art, food and shopping as you go. See our Rates page for prices, and click 'more' for ideas of general themes to help you plan your day.

johannesburg tours

Full-day or Half-day

The Soweto tour includes a bit of everything. In the area of Vilakazi Street, you'll visit Mandela House & the Hector Pieterson Memorial. But you might also visit the Orlando Towers, Regina Mundi church, the Soweto Theatre - or head to the Bara taxi rank, Bara market and the workers' hostels for a taste of a day in the life of a Sowetan.

johannesburg tours

A Focus on Art

1 hr to 8 hrs

Finally Johannesburg is being recognised for its vibrant and varied art scene. We will curate your tour depending on your interest in galleries, artist studios, auction houses, institutional art, public sculpture, street art, graffiti and shopping for any specific items; and we can assure you a diverse and fascinating experience!

johannesburg tours

APARTHEID & GENOCIDE

Johannesburg is home to the Apartheid Museum and the Holocaust & Genocide Centre, both of which are world-class museums. Each is worth a visit, but we suggest that you do not need a Joburg 360 guide. The museums already offer wonderful explanations that encourage you to read, to watch and to listen without additional input from another voice.

johannesburg tours

CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

If you feel like a 'bare bones' trip to one of the world's best fossil sites, let us take you to the Cradle of Humankind where you can enjoy a Malapa Museum visit, a walk through the Sterkfontein caves, and lunch at one of the local restaurants. For a more detailed tour with a paleo-anthropological guide, please contact our colleague Liz Geach on [email protected] .

A Walk in the Wilds

2 hours - free of charge, gratuity basis

Restaurants

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

We're constantly working on our list of good Johannesburg restaurants. For example, we love the outdoor area of the Rosebank Zone with restaurants such as Proud Mary, MamaSamba and Modern Tailors. For farm-to-table dining, we recommend Basalt at The Peech. Described as just-below-fine-dining is the reliable Marble at Keyes Art Mile.

‘One thing I wish I’d understood in school is that the word History is simply a contraction of the words His Story ; it’s just someone’s story!  Now I act as a story-teller, bringing the history and culture of Johannesburg to life in a fun and informative way.’

YEAR END OUTING TO THE WILDS

Dec 11, 2021

Nine members of ArchSoc took part in an early-morning outing to the western section of The Wilds in Killarney. After worrying for most of the week about the possibility of rain, we were delighted to...

Thank you, Sarah, for an informative, comprehensive, and fascinating tour. We all thoroughly enjoyed spending the afternoon with you.

Lindsay Crisp, New Zealand January 2023

As for our guide, Sarah in Joburg, SHE WAS FANTASTIC!!! The best ever. We got to learn about the fascinating history of this city, visit some of the neighborhoods most visitors would never get to see, enjoy art of all kinds, wonderful food, and the moving story of the country’s changes there on Constitution Hill. I can’t thank you enough.

Anne Block, California March 2022

Thank you for an interesting and oh so enlightening tour. I only had a sketchy history of South Africa and its troubles but now I have a much better knowledge of it. What I found astounding is where it stands now. Ok, it has a long way to go, but I feel there is much hope for a country based on such a sound and fair constitution. You were so passionate about it, and I’m sure that there many like-minded people. The UK feels so stale and morally threadbare in comparison. Thank you for giving me a sound background to the country I’m about to explore.

Audrey Leiper, Scotland February 2022

Thanks so much for the most wonderful day, Sarah. The tour was just fabulous and truly inspiring. The team just loved it. Really couldn’t have asked for a more successful day. Your wealth of knowledge and wonderful, fun and relaxed management of the day made it so worthwhile and unbelievably special. Can’t thank you enough.

Anita Williams, Fine & Country May 2021

Thank you SO much for such a stunning walk on Saturday. I loved it. I felt quite uplifted afterwards with the possibilities that exist. With some luck on our side hopefully things will continue to take root and happen there. So wonderful to see it so clean too.

Kathryn Paton August 2020

Sarah is a vibrant guide; she brings an interesting angle and research to every site. She loves the art aspect, which brings new insight to the historical aspect. An absolute gem; a tour with Sarah is poignant, informative and uplifting all at once.

Mary Raubenheimer January 2020

In November we took our group of about 10 on the Newtown Walking Tour with Sarah from Joburg 360. Well, it turned out to be the most awesome day. We are all South Africans who were gobsmacked at the history and the way Sarah presents it in a user-friendly fashion. The Market Theatre, the Rand Club, the statues of Walter and Albertina Sisulu and so much more beside. When you stand in Gandhi Square and hear his involvement followed by a lunch in an old building you drive home so proud to be South African and richer for sharing in the complex development of what remains a great African city. Whoever does this walk will be rewarded with a sense of appreciation of the development of a city so interwoven with cultural diversity and beauty despite years of intolerance and political interference.

Reg & Teresa Thomson December 2019

4 to 8 hours General tour

Half or Full-day tour

Enjoy a drive or a walk - or a combination of both - through different areas of Johannesburg with an emphasis on colonial and Apartheid history, mining history, paleontology & anthropology, Soweto township life, art galleries, street art, urban regeneration, food & wine, nature and/or markets & shopping.

4h or 8h tour

As an optional extra, a cookery lesson is available. Dobsonville in Soweto is home to Alina, one of Africa's finest local chefs. This family business is run from her home, and a cookery lesson (at an additional cost) includes a hearty mix of stews, salads, vegetables, chakalaka, samp, pap and dumplings. Afterwards, sit in splendour and enjoy the fruits of your labour accompanied by a well-earned glass of wine. Bon Appetit!

1 to 8 hours per day

Yes, Johannesburg has recently been voted into the world's Top 50 cities for art. OK, so it's not the Top 10, but we're getting there! From the high-end galleries such as Everard Read, Stevenson, SMAC and Goodman Gallery to artists' collectives, public art and street-sellers, Johannesburg's art world will not disappoint. Just let us know what kind of art floats your boat.

3 hour walking tour

Constitution Hill is a national heritage site and a living museum that traces South Africa’s journey to democracy.  More than any other site in South Africa, it encapsulates the oppression of the country’s past together with our hopes for the future.

The tour of the site includes a visit to the Old Fort with an impressive view from its ramparts, a visit to the Women’s Jail (1910-1983), the Men’s Jail which is known as Number 4 (1904-1983), and the fully-operational Constitutional Court itself (2004-present).  Apart from the warmth and accessibility of the court building, the Constitutional Court also boasts an art collection of over 600 works, many of which are on display.

Apartheid Museum Wed to Sun only

Apartheid & Genocide

At the Holocaust & Genocide Centre there are volunteer guides who can take you around, or you may choose to go by yourself. The centre is open 7 days a week. Entry is free of charge, although a donation is appreciated.

6 hour tour

Cradle of Humankind

As at December 2023, we are sorry to say that the Sterkfontein Caves are still closed due to flooding and subsequent safety concerns.

Newtown Walk

Did you know that Newtown was originally known as Brickfields?  That’s because, at the end of the 19th century, the bricks for the new mining settlement of Johannesburg were made here.

This walking tour traces the history of Newtown from brick-making, power stations and markets to its influence in music and the arts - and now its street art and urban regeneration.  Important stops along the route include Nelson Mandela’s law practice office at Chancellor House as well as Randjeslaagte, the triangular piece of land on which Johannesburg’s first mining camp was established.

And it’s not all history; there’s plenty of trivia, public art, graffiti and a stop for a soft drink or a refreshing ale at the former Johannesburg Stock Exchange. It's worth noting that Newtown enjoyed a wondrously refreshing update to its street art during Covid-19 including a painted keyboard on Mary Fitzgerald Square and a mural celebrating Miriam Makeba on the street that bears her name. So even if you think you've been to Newtown, it's definitely worth another look!

Braamfontein used to be a highveld farm and is now a bustling suburb of Johannesburg.  It was known as the unlucky farm as it was so close to the gold reef, but not one ounce of gold was found on Braamfontein farm itself.

Today, Braamfontein is home to the Joburg Theatre and Ballet, Liberty Indwe Park, WITS University and other colleges, art galleries and museums, public art and graffiti, a beautiful Catholic church, a roof-top plant shop, the Nelson Mandela Bridge and numerous coffee shops, clubs and restaurants.

Our walking tour traces the history and regeneration of this suburb where you can soak up the vibe of the students and young professionals who hang out here.

Maboneng Walk

The brainchild of entrepreneur Jonathan Liebmann, Maboneng has been through a tough time with the demise of Liebmann’s company Propertuity (and, of course, Covid-19) but it’s bouncing back and is now buoyed by the adjacent Divercity project called "Jewel City"where R1 billion has been spent to uplift the old jewellery manufacturing quarter.

Highlights on the Maboneng & Jewel City walk include the former home of the Pacific Press, the 1902 Cosmopolitan Hotel, Bertrand's Cafe and Jazz Lounge, the Collectors' Treasury, plenty of street art and a visit to one or two watering holes along the way.

Highlights of this tour include a visit to David Webster's house, Gandhi's house and the Troyeville House. Plus there are beautiful churches and other buildings from the early 1900s to enjoy. At least one art gallery will be included on the tour, too.

Why not round off your tour with a delicious Portuguese lunch at The Troyeville Hotel or a visit to Victoria Yards?

2 hour walking tour

In theory, The Wilds nature reserve is managed by City Parks, but actually most of the credit goes to artist James Delaney and his band of volunteers. Little by little, they cut away at the undergrowth, cleared the paths, dug up weeds, mowed the lawns and fixed the water pumps - the result of which is a triumphal reclamation of this open space of public parkland. The recent addition of decorative mosaics, plus over 100 laser-cut aluminium animals & birds, serves to enhance the experience for the visitor. The flora and fauna are thriving again, and so too the birdlife that is inevitably drawn to the area.

Tours at The Wilds are free of charge but a suggested gratuity of R150 per person or US$10 per person is appreciated. So come and enjoy a walk on The Wilds side! A full-moon walk is an option too. (The park is open daily from 6am to 6pm).

Jo'burg Children's Home

Every child at the Johannesburg Children's Home receives not only a home but also guidance, support and care which helps them to realise their potential, overcome a traumatic past and become an active member of society. Not only do the older children head out to schools in the area, but the home houses a pre-school as well as an early childhood development centre. What's more, the food gardens and fruit trees yield a generous crop and provide the children with home-grown, seasonal produce all year round. So if you're looking to support a sustainability project, have goods to donate (clothing, non perishable food, toiletries, stationery, household items) to their thrift shop, would like to stay in the self-catering accommodation or simply buy a book from the well-stocked and super-organised second-hand bookshop, the Johannesburg Children's Home is a cause worth supporting.

Precious Stones

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

In the northern suburbs, try Salvation Cafe (44 Stanley), La Boqueria (Parktown North), Liberté and Pronto (both in Craighall Park), Embarc (Parkhust) and Pablo House (Melville). We enjoy Pablo House for its splendid views, interesting wine list and delicious pizzas. Head there during Jacaranda season for an even more impressive outlook over the koppies and all the way to Sandton. On the east side of town, try Sanctuary at Arts on Main, Cafe Bertrand (also on Fox Street in Maboneng) or the Troyeville Hotel. Finally, for wine-tasting, head to Gerakaris Wines in Craighall Park. The list goes on....

Sarah grew up in rural Wales; an area she describes as having ‘more sheep than people’.  After studying a BSc Econ. (Hons) and a post-graduate diploma in Office Information Technology, Sarah fell ‘accidentally’ into tour guiding as a holiday job in 198.  From there, the travel bug set in, and she has worked in tourism in Boston (USA), London and Johannesburg, as well as guiding in cities all over the world.

Sarah gained her global tourism experience in educational tours, ski tours and incentive travel.  She operated her own business in the incentive travel field for 8 years, designing unique global travel experiences for corporates and other groups.  When age 40 hit, she relinquished overseas journeys and settled into tour guiding in Johannesburg, which has been her home base since 1992.  Sarah is passionate about showing both the everyday and the hidden Johannesburg to locals and visitors alike.  Her passions include music, literature and art, and she is able to incorporate these themes into her walking tours of the city.

‘One thing I wish I’d understood in school’, Sarah says, ‘is that the word History is simply a contraction of the words His Story ; it’s just someone’s story!  Now I act as a story-teller, bringing the history and culture of Johannesburg to life in a fun and informative way. The city may be working off a low base (with a reputation for crime), but Johannesburg is an exciting, diverse and multi-cultural African city where no two days are the same, and there’s never a dull moment!’

Sarah lives in an industrial loft apartment with her teenage son. Her aim is to increase her in-depth knowledge of Johannesburg’s city and suburban areas, to improve her working knowledge of French and German, and to buy a bigger vehicle to transport guests too.

Tshepo is a young tourist guide who springs from Jabulani in Soweto. He lives in a four-roomed house with his mother, two sisters, two nieces and a nephew.

Tshepo is passionate about travel and tourism. His favourite life experience so far is a road trip he undertook with friends to Cape Town and along the Garden Route to the Eastern Cape.

In his free time, Tshepo loves to visit the Soweto Theatre, located in Jabulani, to watch a play or a movie or to take part in the Seven Colours event there on Sundays, where popular local food is prepared.

Tshepo is passionate about Johannesburg and Soweto.  He loves sharing our diverse heritage with visitors and giving them a memorable experience in his home town.  He also loves to connect with local people to help them grow their businesses through tourism.  His dream is one day to travel overseas.

Hugh is a registered guide in the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumulanga, Western Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and North West. A tour with Hugh may also include lunch or dinner at his Craighall Park home as Hugh's talents extend to the kitchen too!

Guests should note however that, while the transfers will be private, the places visited are open to the public.

How a typical private tour of Johannesburg would proceed

Following pick-ups, you will travel to Braamfontein’s Constitutional Hill in a private vehicle with your own driver and guide for a guided tour of this iconic institution.

Visitors should keep in mind that, while this is a private tour, the locations visited are open to the public, so other visitors may enjoy the same sights and visit the same locations.

Constitution Hill is a living museum depicting South Africa’s democratic transition. The venue is a former prison and military fort that bears witness to South Africa’s turbulent history. It now serves as the home of the country’s Constitutional Court.

You pass under the eye-catching Mandela Bridge on our way into Johannesburg’s CBD. The Nelson Mandela Bridge, named after him, is South Africa’s largest cable-stayed bridge, connecting two important business districts.

Your guide will show you around Johannesburg, pointing out historic landmarks and buildings like Newtown Precinct, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Gandhi Square, and Luthuli House.

Your itinerary may include a stop at the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg. Africa’s second-tallest structure is a 50-story, 223-meter-tall skyscraper and shopping centre. A panoramic view of Johannesburg and its northern suburbs can be seen from the top.

The next stop could be the Apartheid Museum. It is a one-of-a-kind museum that depicts South Africa during apartheid’s turbulent years.Through a series of 22 individual exhibitions, the museum depicts apartheid’s rise and fall, taking you on an emotional journey from the heart breaking struggle for freedom and equality to the ultimate climax of Nelson Mandela’s election as South Africa’s first Black president.

You will get to the Apartheid Museum around midday where you can buy something to eat and drink at the Truth Café.

The journey continues to Soweto, passing famous landmarks such as the FNB Soccer Stadium, Baragwanath Hospital, and the massive Soweto Towers.

The afternoon part of the tour includes significant heritage sites in Soweto that commemorate the city’s struggles during the apartheid era, as well as popular streets and markets that highlight the city’s vibrant, multi-cultural lifestyle.

A next stop may be the Motsoaledi informal settlement, where you can go on a walkabout.

The Hector Pieterson Museum, that was established in memory of the young boy and other schoolchildren who were killed during the 1976 Soweto Uprising, is possibly next on the itinerary.

As you make your way to the cultural hub of Vilakazi Street and the historic suburb of Orlando West, you can also visit the Regina Mundi Church and the Nelson Mandela Museum (at your own expense).

Your guide will drive you back to your Johannesburg hotel after an exciting day.

Included in such a tour package

Included in your private Soweto tours package will usually be:

  • Transfer in a private air-conditioned tour vehicle
  • Your own English-speaking guide
  • Entrance fee to Constitutional Hill
  • Carlton Centre tour
  • Entrance fee to Hector Pieterson Museum
  • Entrance to the Apartheid Museum

Excluded from your package are food and beverages and all purchases of a personal nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of booking a private individual Johannesburg tour instead of a group tour?

There are several benefits to booking a private Johannesburg tour instead of a group tour. First, a private tour can be customized to the individual’s preferences and interests, allowing for a more personalized experience. Second, a private tour can offer more flexibility in terms of scheduling, as the start time and duration can be tailored to the needs of the individual. Finally, a private tour can provide a more intimate and exclusive experience, with one-on-one attention from the tour guide and the opportunity to ask more questions and learn more about the city and its attractions.

What is the cost of private Johannesburg tours?

The cost of private Johannesburg tours can vary depending on the duration, itinerary, and inclusions. As a rough estimate, a half-day private tour may start at around ZAR 1,500 to ZAR 2,500 per person, while a full-day private tour may range from ZAR 2,500 to ZAR 5,000 per person or more, depending on the operator and the inclusions. However, it’s important to note that prices can vary greatly depending on the tour operator, the number of people in the group, and any additional services or amenities included in the tour.

What are some popular private Johannesburg tour options?

Popular private Johannesburg tour options include visits to the Hector Petersen Museum, Apartheid Museum, Mandela House Museum,  the township of Soweto, a walk through Vilakazi Street, and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Other options include private safaris to nearby game reserves or visits to local craft markets and galleries.

Kruger & Cape Town Short Break by Plane

We had an amazing holiday we were always picked up on time and the staff were always helpful. Met some lovely travellers. The accommodation in Capetown was dreadful even though staff lovely. Our hotel was changed from the one we booked for and our guides agreed the Hotel cape Milner was the best and as I booked a long time ago I don’t understand why we were moved. We were only offered a small room no balcony overlooking a building site we then had to pay ourselves to upgrade. This hotel is catered for business clients the restaurant looks onto shipping crates we also realised after 3 days that we were only booked in for 4 nights not 5 but we rang rep who sorted it out . Even thouythe staff helped us out it did spoil the Capetown visit .

5-Day Kruger National Park Big 5 Safari & Panorama Route Tour

The tour was really awesome. Each day we got to see so much and we were so lucky to get to see the Big 5! The only thing that let the experience down was the accommodation which was pretty dated and felt damp. But it had been wet and we were reluctant to overuse the aircon. The food was generous and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. Next time we go safari, we will spend a little more now that we know what to experimenter. Thank you for a great tour.

Super South Africa Tour

Super South Africa

I booked a trip with Indus to South Africa and had a fabulous time! It was easy to book the trip online and any questions I had were answered very quickly by Sabine. The hotels we stayed at were very nice and in good locations. Our tours were well organized and our safari in Kruger National park was definitely a highlight. A few mornings had a bright and early start, but this allowed us to accomplish quite a lot in a day. The hotel restaurants had decent food, which was convenient if we had a longer day and didn't want to go out to eat. Overall, I was very happy with the trip and I felt the price for my tour was excellent value. I would definitely use Indus again!

9 Day Incredible South African Safari and Drakensberg Adventure

We had a wonderful tour, made possible by a great guide. We wanted to get a taste of a variety of parks and found the destinations very thoughtfully put together. It is a lot of driving to see the various areas but there were strategic breaks. Loved staying inside the parks and having critters outside the veranda . We saw 13 rhinos in one day! Wade was great at seeing things we would have missed and always able to manoeuvre the car for best views and photos. They are quite happy to tailor your experience so don’t be afraid to ask.

Best of Kruger National Park Tour

Best of Kruger National Park

9 Best Things To Do In Johannesburg, South Africa

J o’burg, or Jozi as locals affectionately call it, or sometimes E’Goli or the “City of Gold” because of its historical links to gold mining — how much do you know about the city of Johannesburg? Located in the eastern part of the country, Johannesburg is a massive city, the largest in South Africa. It is South Africa’s financial center, a city that has shaped the country’s history and politics, and one that is filled with treasures.

Often overlooked in favor of other more picturesque parts of South Africa, Johannesburg is often just a stopover for international tourists, being home to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest airport on the African continent. Often the jumping-off point for a safari and mostly enjoyed on a quick layover, Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. On one hand, there’s the poverty and struggles of Soweto, and on the other, there are the glitzy skyscrapers and “super homes” of Sandton, which is often referred to as Africa’s richest square mile. Despite its complicated past, the City of Gold has a lot to offer tourists.

There’s a lot to see, do, and learn here, much more than you may imagine. Read on for my top tips for things to do in Johannesburg.

1. The City Center

A great way to start your Johannesburg experience is by heading into the city center, which is full of historic buildings. The city’s reputation can make it a bit intimidating for solo travel, so a good option for getting a feel for South Africa’s biggest and richest city is by joining the safety and security of a guided walking tour . Visit Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa’s first black-owned law firm. Get a 360-degree view of Johannesburg from the Carlton Centre, a 50-story skyscraper located in central Johannesburg. Admire heritage buildings on historic Main Street. Visit the Workers Museum and Museum Africa. Get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the people, lifestyle, and culture of this complex city.

2. Constitution Hill

If you’re visiting South Africa, spend some time learning about apartheid — a brutal period of national segregation that lasted 43 years. A visit to Constitution Hill will give you a better understanding of this troubled era.

Constitution Hill was once a notorious complex of prisons, known as “The Fort,” where political activists and ordinary citizens alike were incarcerated throughout the apartheid era. Thousands of men and women — of all races, ages, social statuses, and political beliefs, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi — were imprisoned and tortured here.

Constitution Hill overlooks the city and has been transformed into beautiful, thought-provoking museums focussing on the promotion of human rights. Some interesting exhibits include Number Four Museum (once male prisoner cells), the Old Fort Museum (where the whites-only prison was located), and the Women’s Gaol Museum. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter the still-functioning High Court, if no proceedings are in progress.

Visiting Constitution Hill will give you deeper insights into South Africa’s history and you should pair your visit with a tour of the Apartheid Museum, whose immersive exhibits explore this tragic time in more depth.

3. The Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum will give you glimpses of apartheid, the laws of segregation according to racial groups, and South Africa’s painful journey to freedom.

On arrival, you’ll receive an entry ticket that will randomly classify you as white or non-white and you may only enter through the gate indicated for the race you have been allocated. That’s just to give you a taste of the reality of the past and set the atmosphere for the rest of your visit.

There are two main exhibitions in the Apartheid Museum , The Permanent Exhibition and The Mandela Exhibition, as well as rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of the issue more in depth. The permanent exhibition takes you through some of the painful events of South Africa’s struggle for liberation. The Mandela Exhibition gives you an opportunity to learn about the leading statesman who was at the forefront of the country’s struggle against apartheid, including his time as a prisoner for 27 years.

4. Soweto Township

About 12 miles from Jo’burg center, Soweto is the largest township in South Africa with around 1.3 million inhabitants. During the apartheid regime, Soweto was at the heart of the movement to end apartheid and was a no-go area for tourists. More recently, the South African government has focussed on developing tourism in Soweto, making it a safe, dynamic, and interesting place to visit with some wonderful historical areas to explore, as well as an up-and-coming adventure sports scene.

The best way to experience Soweto is on a guided tour with someone who’ll take you to the main landmarks and tell you about their relevance, including Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

If you’re looking for a different side of the township, check out the activities at Soweto Towers. These striking structures, which were once part of a power station, now serve as an entertainment center and adrenaline-junky paradise. Bungee jumping, from a 328-foot-high suspension bridge, is the big attraction here. You can also try paintball or base jumping.

5. Maboneng Precinct

Another fun thing to do in Johannesburg is take a tour of the “super cool” Maboneng Precinct. Once a rundown part of town, a renovation project has turned it into an up-and-coming neighborhood where you’ll find great restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, and art galleries. Maboneng is a Sesotho word meaning “place of lights,” and the name perfectly describes the district. It is Johannesburg’s downtown fashion corner, buzzing lifestyle playground, and one of the city’s major creative hubs. Maboneng is filled with remarkable works of art, beautiful murals, and colorful graffiti.

6. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for something a little more “natural,” you’ll find plenty to enjoy at the Botanical Gardens. There are nine national botanical gardens in South Africa, and the Walter Sisulu , with its 200 acres of greenery and seven gardens of local and international plants, is one of them.

Highlights include the Witpoortjie Waterfall, Birds and Butterfly Garden, Fern Trail, Children’s Garden, Herb Garden, and the impressive array of desert plants in the Succulent Garden. If you’re a theater fan, spend some time in the Shakespeare Garden, which is filled with plants and herbs that were featured in the bard’s plays. The gardens are a great place to unwind and enjoy a bit of nature in the heart of the city.

7. Art Galleries

Located in Joubert Park, Johannesburg Art Gallery is one of the best art spots to visit in Johannesburg. With an impressive collection of art, including prints that date back to the 15th century, it features works of artists such as Dali and Picasso, and a section dedicated to local artists as well. Then, make your way over to the Wits Art Museum . Located on the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg campus, the Wits Art Museum houses 15,000 works spanning from the 19th century to the modern day.

Another excellent art venue in the city is the Goodman Gallery which focuses specifically on art with a social justice component. Its exhibits highlight emerging artists who are regarded as having helped shape the landscape of contemporary art in South Africa.

8. Food Tours

Johannesburg is often said to be the foodie capital of South Africa, but if you want to go for something super-traditional, opt for a typical African meal in Soweto, Yeoville, or Maboneng.

South Africa’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its food and one of the coolest things to do in Johannesburg is to enjoy the cuisine. Local delicacies can include chicken neck, chicken feet, pigs’ trotters, and tripe, all accompanied by the unmissable paap — a ground-maize dish quite similar to polenta. Check out the Taste of Africa food tour which will get you sampling a variety of Pan-African restaurants in the thriving Yeoville neighborhood.

Had enough art, culture, or food and want to stretch your legs — how about teeing off at one of the best golf courses in Johannesburg? The Royal Johannesburg Golf Club , which has been running since 1890, offers two championship-level courses. At the Bryanston Country Club , there are a variety of greens for people of all skill levels, complete with plenty of entertaining water hazards. The links at Observatory Golf Course feature challenging holes and are committed to making the sport affordable for average individuals.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, vibrant nightlife, great restaurants, or renowned cultural institutions, Johannesburg boasts a rich history and culture with museums, galleries, and historical sites to explore. A visit to Johannesburg is bound to make your stay in South Africa a memorable one.
