Journey with Andrea Bocelli in thrilling music special this Holy Week

A new documentary that follows Andrea Bocelli and his wife Veronica as they travel the Via Francigena on horseback, meeting a star-studded lineup of faith-based singers along the way, is coming to theaters in time for Holy Week.

Titled THE JOURNEY: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli , this 90-minute feature film combines breathtaking Italian landscapes, world-class musical performances, and musings on the virtues of religious music, silence, and family to present the must-see faith film of the season . 

This film is an incredibly personal project for Bocelli, who opens himself up to audiences for rare glimpses into his life and family, which are revealed through conversations with his wife, Veronica, and the many guest artists who join him for stints of the trip. In the beginning of the film, for example, Bocelli reveals that his first horse was a gift from his late father just prior to his death , which immediately sets an intimate tone for THE JOURNEY.

As the couple ride through the quiet countryside, Bocelli remarks on the value of silence, in regards to both music and faith development. Here, Bocelli becomes a full fledged philosopher, likening the silence between notes of a song to the silences between moments in our lives. It is in these moments that the music and its rhythm take form, and similarly it is the time in which we can bring form to our own faith through such prayerful interaction with the Almighty.

As the Bocellis proceed through the Via Francigena, the famed Italian pilgrimage route that extends more than 1,000 miles and is Europe’s oldest pilgrimage route, they are joined by many high profile Christian singers. The first guest of the film is Tori Kelly, who seems like a natural horse rider. We don’t want to spoil the set list, but we will note that Kelly sings two songs, one supported by a phenomenal Gospel choir and the other a duet with Bocelli, accompanied by the renowned guitar quartet, 40 Fingers . 

The next guest to join Bocelli is Grammy Award winning pianist Michael W. Smith, who performs several songs and even shows off his skills on the organ in a quiet Italian church. He and Bocelli sit down for a conversation on the pride they take in performing music of faith, likening their craft to a vocation. Smith’s candle-lit performance in an ancient Roman ruin was among the most memorable visuals of the film.

While we’re talking about visuals, it’s hard to overstate the beauty of THE JOURNEY’s cinematography. Wherever they go, be it on a dirt road on Italy’s rolling hills, at the Vatican, inside various storied churches, or at Bocelli’s villa, this film is a veritable feast for the eyes . This too speaks to the personal nature of the film, as we see a blind man continuing to deepen his faith, even as he cannot see the awe inspiring sites designed to spur devotion within the faithful. 

As the film progresses, singer Tauren Wells joins the group, during which he reveals that he had never been on a horse before the filming . Be that as it may, he rides well and the two share a conversation on the transformative power of music, before Wells gives a thrilling performance of one of his best songs, accompanying himself on piano. 

Soon after, Bocelli meets up with Taya, of Hillsong UNITED, who sings one of her most famous songs while accompanied by Bocelli on piano. Here Bocelli shows off his multi-instrumental talent, all the while adding rich harmonies to support Taya. 

Our favorite moment of the film was when Andrea met up with his daughter, Virginia, at the Basilica of Santa Christina. Here, Bocelli remarks upon the virtue of fatherhood and the pride he takes in passing his faith down to his children . The shots of Bocelli taking his daughter around to share various aspects of Catholicism are simply heartwarming. Bocelli also shares a similar moment with his son Matteo, who reads his father a touching letter he wrote himself.

All of these elements and guest singers come together for a final song that cements THE JOURNEY as a monumental and thrilling musical extravaganza. It’s hard to call it the best song of the show, as THE JOURNEY is just brimming with some of the most high quality religious songs of both the classical and contemporary songbooks , but the scope of the performance is practically dizzying as the camera bounces around to the various beautiful settings of the film. 

We could go on and on about the immense beauty which THE JOURNEY packs into just an hour and a half, but words are insufficient to convey such tremendously touching audio and visuals . Instead, we’ll highly recommend that all lovers of music, art, and the Catholic faith see this excellent documentary on the big screen, where it will be running in theaters across the US from April 2-6.

The film opens in Fathom Event theaters across the country on Palm Sunday, April 2 and now runs through Easter Sunday, April 9.

Goldwyn Films has revealed an official US trailer for a Italian adventure musical called The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli . Arriving on VOD this December after first premiering earlier this year. The doc follows the blind, religious Italian singer named Andrea Bocelli as he embarks on a journey following the Via Francigena, an ancient road traveled for centuries by pilgrims - they ride 200 miles on horseback throughout Italy. Merging world-class music with intimate conversations in the awe-inspiring Italian countryside, it is an exploration of the moments that define us, the songs that inspire us, and relationships that connect us to what matters most in life. Featuring Andrea Bocelli, Tori Kelly, Michael W. Smith, Katherine Jenkins, Tauren Wells, and Clara Barbier Serrano. "You'll be swept away by The Journey of beautiful music, creation, faith, and love." This looks like an emotional and passionate performance piece. It very obviously has a strong religious edge to it, not simply another musical. This trailer comes in gorgeous 4K quality as well - as least Italy looks nice.

Bocelli and his wife Veronica travel on horseback along Italy's Via Francigena, an ancient road traveled for centuries in the footsteps of the apostles and saints. Along the way, they are joined by friends Michael W. Smith, Tori Kelly, Tauren Wells, and TAYA for musical performances in some of Italy's most magnificent venues & majestic locations. Following a blessing from the Pope, Bocelli's children Matteo & Virginia make appearances in this amazing adventure, as well as musicians / singers Katherine Jenkins, Clara Barbier Serrano, 2Cellos, 40 Fingers, and others.

The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli is co-directed by the filmmakers Gaetano Morbioli (a music video director making his feature directorial debut) & Paolo Sodi (director of the doc films Blood Scales , Remembering Papua New Guinea , and many shorts). Andrea Bocelli's holiday tour is coming to Mohegan Sun Arena in December

Andrea Bocelli will come to Mohegan Sun Arena this winter during his 2024 Holiday Tour.

He will have a 7:30 p.m. show on Sunday, Dec. 15.

Tickets are available on Tuesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.com.

Subject to availability, fans will be able to purchase tickets at the Mohegan Sun Box Office starting on Wednesday, April 17.

He will perform at the TD Garden in Boston on Dec. 14 and at Madison Square Garden in New York on Dec. 19.

Bocelli performed in Connecticut in March with a show at the XL Center in Hartford after his December 2023 concert was postponed because of health concerns.

What Is Andrea Bocelli’s 2024 Holiday Tour?

As per tradition, Bocelli will celebrate the holidays by playing a number of shows across the US in December. This year’s itinerary includes shows in San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Uncasville, New York, and Miami. Notably, Bocelli will headline two dates at Madison Square Garden on December 18th and 19th.

This year’s tour coincides with 30 years in music, as well as with his 65th birthday. He promises to perform music spanning his entire repertoire, including selections from his recent holiday album, A Family Christmas .

Bocelli is in the middle of a spring tour of North America, with upcoming shows scheduled in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Toronto, Montreal, Indianapolis, and Detroit. Additionally, he’ll play shows in Charlotte and Highland, CA in late October / early November.

A ticket pre-sale for Andrea Bocelli’s holiday tour will take place on Wednesday, April 10th at 10:00 a.m. local time (use code RIFF ) via Ticketmaster , with a public on-sale following on Tuesday, April 16th via Ticketmaster.

Greenville Symphony Orchestra to play with Italian opera tenor Bocelli at Bon Secours

World-famous Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will bring his Valentine Tour to Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Feb. 15, 2024.

A day after opening the tour in Raleigh, North Carolina, a stop in Greenville will signify a salute to Valentine's Day and Bocelli's first performance in South Carolina. Maestro Steven Mercurio will conduct, and the Greenville Symphony Orchestra will accompany Bocelli.

"Hosting a world-renowned singer like Bocelli is a great honor for our team as well as the region and comes at an exciting time in our arena's history as we continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary," said Beth Paul, general manager of Bon Secours Wellness Arena. "We look forward to a truly unforgettable evening next February."

Bocelli was born with congenital glaucoma and became completely blind at age 12. His beginnings in music started at the piano and laid the foundation for 30 years in the industry. Bocelli's industry-recognized voice and international prowess have resulted in more than 90 million records sold worldwide.
