7 days in clearwater beach, fl – local’s guide.

Okay, so I might not actually be a local, but I have been to Clearwater beach like, WAY too many times.

Clearwater is like a second home to me because it’s where my one and only sister, Brie, lives. We visit Brie a few times a year and have done everything there is to do (twice). It is an adorable town with miles of white sand beach and tourists as far as the eye can see!

For this itinerary you will definitely need a rental car! There are so many fun things to do right outside of Clearwater, which makes it the perfect hub to stay at.

Pssst… If you are planning a trip to Clearwater Beach, don’t forget to check out my Best Day Trips from Clearwater guide!

There’s a high chance this post contains affiliate links . I may receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you), that goes directly towards little Rosie’s dog treats!

Where to stay?

I recommend staying on the inner coastal side of Clearwater Beach. Every time we have stayed there we’ve gotten to see wild dolphins! You are also such a quick walk or bike ride to all the popular restaurants + the sunsets are hard to beat.

IMG_2377

Best time to go?

I believe winter is the best time to go because it is far less crowded, minimal humidity, still beautiful 70-80 degree weather, and so many wild animals are in the canals and rivers! The only downside is the ocean water can get pretty cold in the winter, so if you are coming to town to spend a lot of time on the beach, spring might be better for you!

What to pack?

I keep a list of all my summer essentials and favorite finds  on this guide here . I am constantly updated it after every warm destination – tried, true & tested!

Also, I have a list of my 10 travel essentials I can’t live without,  you can read those here !

If you are traveling to Clearwater in the winter months, I would still bring summer clothes + a few light jackets. It gets cool at night, but still sunny and warm during the daytime!

Day 1: Fly into Tampa, FL!

Tampa is the closest airport to Clearwater Beach – only 30 to 40 minutes away. If you’re flying anywhere from the west coast (like me) you will lose almost a whole day with travel + time change. Grab a yummy bite to eat & explore all the fun bars and shops along Mandalay Blvd!

Day 2: Beach Day!

Kick off your vacation and possible jet lag with a relaxing beach day. There are sooo many beautiful beaches in/near Clearwater including the award-winning Clearwater Beach! This perfectly groomed, white sand beach is like something out of a movie. The gulf water temperatures range anywhere from 80-90 degrees in the summer time, making this the most crowded beach in all of Clearwater.

IMG_9584

Some other, not-as-touristy, beaches that are worth checking out:

Honeymoon Island

Honeymoon island is about a 30 minute drive from Clearwater beach & far less touristy. You will have to pay a small entrance & parking fee but it’s a price worth paying to actually have room to lay out on the sand! Plus the name of this beach is too cute to skip out on!

Sand Key Beach

Sand Key beach is also far less crowded than Clearwater Beach and still so close – Only a 10 minute drive away! This beach is not groomed and has many sea shells on it. If you are looking for the fluffy white sand, then I would stick to Clearwater beach.

Caladesi Island

Caladesi Island is near honeymoon island and can actually be accessed by kayak. If you wanted to skip the kayaking and go right to Caladesi, you will have to pay for the boat to take you + a state park fee. The beach is beautiful and there is a 3.5 mile trail around the island to show you the mangrove swamp, sand dunes, coastal scrub, & more!

Day 3: Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Seeing Clearwater Marine Aquarium is an absolute must see if you are in Clearwater. I might be a tad biased because my sister is a dolphin trainer there, but it’s home to the famous Winter the dolphin!

Nicholas the Dolphin at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Have you ever seen the movie Dolphin Tale? If not, its an inspirational movie series about a dolphin who lost it’s tale in a crab trap. Winter has surpassed all expectations and still lives thanks to the amazing and talented CMA team ( especially Brie)! People with disabilities, veterans, and other amputees fly in from all over the world to see this rarity.

IMG_5013

The aquarium currently has dolphins, pelicans, otters, turtles, nurse sharks, & sting rays! Thanks to their two successful movies, they are constantly growing to help more animals.

IMG_2575

TIP: The line to buy tickets are 99% of the time long and outside. If you want to be able to just walk in, I would recommend buying tickets in advance! You can browse pricing and pick dates here .

I would end your busy day at the aquarium with lunch at my all-time favorite restaurant, Bait House . Bait house doubles as a restaurant and fish shop! They have a spot where fisherman can pull their boat right up to the restaurant – they will even prep & cook the fish you just caught!

Bait House Restaurant in Clearwater Beach, Florida

TIP: Don’t forget to bring a dollar to write your name on and staple to the walls – on your next trip you can see if it made it through the hurricanes, ha!

Day 4: Brewery Tour in Dunedin

Dunedin is a picturesque town just 15 minutes outside of Clearwater Beach. It has town-wide festivals, storefront shops, and water bowls for dogs in front of every store!

If you like beer, this is a great spot to hang out where the locals are and take a flight of some Florida beer.

Dunedin Brewery in Dunedin, Florida

Some of the best breweries in the area are Dunedin Brewery , Woodwright Brewery , and 7th Sun Brewery .

Day 5: Busch Gardens Tampa

Orlando has endless amusement parks but is a two-hour trek EACH WAY from Clearwater beach.

A great alternative is Busch Gardens in Tampa , which is only a 45 minute drive away. You’ll get a good mix of animals and roller coasters without having to spend too much of your vacation driving!

End your night with live music and a famous Clearwater Beach sunset at the Palm Pavilion .

Palm Pavilion Restaurant on Clearwater Beach, Florida

Day 6: Adventure Tour

If you walk along the marina, you will see endless tours for sale! You can go jet skiing in the marina, parasailing in the ocean, rent a boat and go fishing and so much more.

I’ve never done the parasailing because I get too sea sick, so if you do it, let me know in the comments below so I can be eternally envious of you!

End your night with a cocktail and corn hole at the cliff-side bar, Sand Bar .

Sand Bar in Clearwater, Florida

Day 7: Beach day & Fly Home!

Sleep in and get a nice farewell breakfast on the beach!

Baseball fans get a three-for-one eruption of action on the diamond Friday when the Double-A, High-A and Single-A seasons get underway, signaling the official green light of an exhilarating summer ahead.

While the players about to embark on Opening Day may not sit the proverbial "one step away" from The Show, it's tough to argue that they couldn't impact big league rosters -- and in short order.

Just last year, Jackson Chourio produced an historic season for Double-A Biloxi before inking the richest deal in MLB history for a player yet to make his big league debut. And how about Nolan Schanuel, whom the Angels selected with the 11th overall pick in last July's Draft and fast-tracked through the system for just 22 Minors games before he started setting a record on-base streak to begin his Major League career.

At this time last year, Jackson Holliday, MLB's No. 1 prospect , was at Single-A. Now he's on the precipice of stardom after winning MLB Pipeline's Prospect Hitter of the Year Award in 2023. You may not know all the names yet, but their skillsets are ready to be put on display.

It is all happening in Minor League Baseball.

Every organization’s quest for a World Series title and every future star’s journey to big league greatness is built here. It’s where new fans are made and baseball lifers congregate in dugouts, front offices, press boxes and the stands. It’s where wild, wacky identities are invented and reinvented and concessions experimentation goes oh-so-right.

With the Triple-A campaign already underway and Single-A, High-A and Double-A opening on Friday, our staff provides 11 reasons to be excited for the 2024 Minor League season.

A new wave of talent in the wings

The dawn of a new Minor League season brings with it the thrill of new players and new adventures on the diamond. As is the case every year, it also brings with it an influx of talent from the prep and collegiate scene through the MLB Draft. With top prospects like Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana and West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt leading the way, there’s no shortage of talent to look forward to from the Class of ’24! -- Michael Avallone, a writer for MLB.com and MiLB.com

Stunning breakouts

I can't wait to see who the breakout prospects of 2024 will be. Who will follow in the footsteps of Elly De La Cruz and Jackson Chourio in recent years and see their prospect stock shoot through the stratosphere? Roman Anthony (Red Sox), Jackson Jobe (Tigers), Chase DeLauter (Guardians), Noah Schultz (White Sox), Matt Shaw (Cubs), Dylan Lesko (Padres), Xavier Isaac (Rays), Aidan Miller (Phillies), Druw Jones (Diamondbacks), Roderick Arias (Yankees), Colt Emerson (Mariners) and Bryce Eldridge (Giants) are just some of the possibilities. And the coolest part is that there will be some names we never saw coming. -- Jim Callis, Senior writer, prospects

Naming the new No. 1

Each of MLB Pipeline’s top seven overall prospects have ETAs of 2024, and three made Opening Day rosters, including No. 2 Jackson Chourio. With Jackson Holliday also expected to be in Baltimore before long, we’ll likely need a new person at the top spot this summer. Could it be catching phenom Ethan Salas? Five-tool star Walker Jenkins? A breakout star heretofore unforeseen? Will Holliday stick around prospectdom long enough to keep his throne? It could be a debate that rolls through the entire season, and it’s one I can’t wait to have. -- Sam Dykstra, Reporter, prospect coverage

Last year's Draft class arrives

Last summer, the electric 2023 Draft class got a taste of the Minors. This year, I’m excited to watch these prospects stretch their legs (and innings limits). Paul Skenes is already the most exciting pitcher in the Minors, while Max Clark and Walker Jenkins are becoming fan favorites. I’m also looking forward to Rhett Lowder and Chase Dollander’s much-anticipated pro debuts. And that’s just a few Minor League rookies to watch. -- Kelsie Heneghan, Senior coordinator, prospect content

A whole lotta nothing

Nothing Night is what its name implies: A night at the ballpark with as few distractions as possible. No videoboard displays, no sound amplification, no between-inning contests … in short, just baseball. Contrary to what one may assume, nothing can evolve into something new. The Lake Elsinore Storm, progenitors of this promotional concept, have expanded its parameters and renamed it Sensory Friendly Night (taking place on July 14). Other variations of the Nothing Night approach will be undertaken by the Louisville Bats, Lynchburg Hillcats, Inland Empire 66ers and Lehigh Valley IronPigs. -- Benjamin Hill, Senior writer, Minor Leagues

There's someone at the ballpark ... There's some thing at the ballpark!

On June 14, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A affiliate of the Mets) play as the Creatures in a tribute to the area’s favorite son: Rod Serling. This won’t be the first time the team salutes the creator of “The Twilight Zone,” but it figures to be the most nerd-pleasing. The Creatures are specifically an homage to the gremlin featured in the unforgettable 1963 episode “Terror at 20,000 Feet,” starring a young William Shatner and directed by the great Richard Donner. -- Josh Jackson, an editor for MLB.com and MiLB.com

Visiting classic Minors stadiums

I’ve lived within a short drive of Asheville for 10 years now, and visited the city probably 20 times in that span. But I’ve never been to McCormick Field. It’s time to change that. I love the places in baseball that connect us to the sport’s past, and fewer and fewer of them are still standing. I’m thrilled at the prospect of finally visiting another of them this year. -- Matthew Leach, Executive editor, prospects and Minor Leagues

MiLB returns to Rickwood

To say I’m fascinated by the Negro Leagues would be an extreme understatement. Any chance I get, I’m brushing up on Satchel Paige’s antics on the mound or the specs on Josh Gibson’s legendary 40-ounce, 41-inch bat. So, when I heard that baseball is being brought back to Rickwood Field -- the home of hundreds of Negro Leagues games -- I was stoked beyond belief. The weekend, which will feature a Minor League game between the Montgomery Biscuits and Birmingham Barons – in addition to the contest between the Cardinals and Giants -- will also have appearances from former Negro Leaguers, including, of course, former Birmingham Black Baron, Willie Mays. It’s shaping up to be a once-in-a-lifetime event. -- Brendan Samson, Contributor to MLB.com

When the best seat in the house will be a booth

I’m hungry for the Somerset Patriots’ Jersey Diners alternate identity. What an inspired idea! New Jersey -- the Diner Capital of the World -- offers hundreds of opportunities for people to sit down with comfort food. And in becoming the Jersey Diners for three games this season, the Double-A Yankees affiliate organically enters that landscape. The Fooser Studios logos are witty, colorful … and, yes, they’re comforting as well. I’ll be donning the apparel for games and restaurant visits before and long after the designated Jersey Diners nights. -- Paige Schector, Manager, prospect and Minor League content

Brand-new international connections

I am most excited about the Bhutan baseball day that will be hosted by the Hudson Valley Renegades on Aug. 20. Upon seeing that viral photo of the Bhutanese baseball players I was immediately hooked. Now, to not only have their story finally garner proper attention, but to also be able to contribute to it personally is an opportunity that I cannot pass up -- and I hope to see a packed house at Heritage Financial Park to partake as well. Also, those special jerseys that the Renegades are going to wear that day are absolutely fire! -- Rob Terranova, Writer for MLB.com and MiLB.com

The greatest mashup identity ever?

As the reigning kings of the “Why not?” theme night, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp continue to outdo themselves. “Steamboat Willie” entered the public domain in 2024, and with it being the talk of January, what better mashup could a team do then with King Kong and Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” for a jersey? The three have nothing to do with each other, but that’s the fun of Minor League Baseball. -- Kenny Van Doren, Contributor to MLB.com
