The Birthday Massacre with Julien-K make the Orpheum Tampa a dark wave party
By Chyrisse Tabone, Rock At Night Tampa
Live Review: The Birthday Massacre with Julien-K – The Orpheum, Tampa, Florida – March 23 2022
Toronto-based electro dark wave veterans The Birthday Massacre (TBM) are on tour across the U.S. with Julien-K and Rock At Night was lucky to catch them at the Orpheum in Ybor City, Tampa. We recently reviewed a single “Dreams of You” from their 9 th studio album Fascination and you can see it HERE .
Wednesday is usually an off night in Ybor City, the nightclub district in Tampa. However, the venerable venue The Orpheum was packed from floor to the balcony with people dressed in black lace, platforms, and the usual Goth fare. Tampa has always been a city that embraces Goth and counterculture which had its heyday in the 90s with the opening of the bar The Castle.
We were lucky to catch Julien-K, the Long Beach band that consists of former Orgy members Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck. The crowd appeared very receptive (lots of head bopping) to the band that put on one hell of a show amid tons of smoke and colored lights. Shuck was a maniac as he danced, slinked across the floor, belted out tunes, and eventually ripped off his jacket to reveal a ripped up leather shirt. His voice was superb and his stage presence reeked of charisma. Their music sounded like NIN at times but with heavy influences of Depeche Mode and Marilyn Manson. The lyrics to the song “Stronger Without You” really hit home—and I wondered if it was a jab at former Orgy lead singer Jay Gordon.
Shuck was very appreciative of the audience and noted how receptive Florida crowds are to the band. He noted the last song was one of Orgy’s hits as the entire place was dancing. After the set ended, I overheard this conversation between Millennials:
Millennial 1: What was that song? Does anybody have an idea?
Millennial 2: I think it was New Order.
Millennial 1: New what?
Millennial 2: New Order. Let’s look them up to find the song.
Me: Guys, it’s “Blue Monday” by New Order.
“Blue Monday” was actually recorded 40 years ago—1982.
Wearing newly purchased The Birthday Massacre t-shirts, the crowd went wild as TBM performed a roster of songs that spanned 20 years. Chibi and the band performed songs like “Superstition”, “Destroyer”, “Blue”, and “Fascination”. One of my favorite songs was “Video Kid” from the album Nothing & Nowhere (2002). The keyboard player got the crowd clapping at specific intervals in the song.
During one of the songs, an audience member handed Chibi black rabbit ears to wear. Some may know the band’s mascot is a killer rabbit and the color purple is their trademark.
TBM turned The Orpheum into a dance party and again proved that Tampa is very welcoming to Goth or dark wave music. Try to catch the tour as the band makes their way north toward Pennsylvania in early April.

CONCERT REVIEW + PHOTOS: PRIEST + JULIEN-K + SEPTEMBER MOURNING IN DALLAS, TX
On Friday night, Sundown at Granada in Dallas, TX became a haven for goths when the Neon Chronicles Tour with Priest , Julien-K , and September Mourning rolled through town and treated us to an evening of synth-heavy goodness. Each band brought a different vibe to the table, which made for an interesting night.
September Mourning is a dark, paranormal dreamscape fantasy told from the perspective of a supernatural girl named September through music and various visual media. They successfully whipped the crowd into a frenzy to prepare them for the next musical onslaught.
Julien-K arrived onstage to the hard-hitting, fast beats of “Harmonic Disruptor.” With a frantic energy that was instantly contagious, frontman Ryan Shuck wasted no time in commanding both the stage and the audience, and the packed house was there for it. The band’s sound has varied through the years, which allowed them to dish out the perfect mix of industrial, metal, and electronica.
The electro-industrial rockers from Long Beach, CA made history last month when they launched an Indiegogo campaign to help pay for the creation of its planned DRK|MODE music collection and it broke the record for most money raised in a day. The campaign has currently reached about 400% of its initial goal. Their video for “All That Glitters” was just released a few hours before Friday’s show and you can watch that below.
Swedish darkwave band Priest finished out the night with a dose of their synth-laden melodies that were soaked up by the enthusiastic crowd. Clothed in spiked studded leather and in black from head to toe, the band ripped through their set with their singer, who goes by Mercury, often hopping down from the stage to commune with his audience….and to enjoy a keytar solo by fellow band member Salt from among the crowd. It was an endearing and unexpected moment that brought a huge grin to my face. You can check out a video of that below.
Priest’s upcoming fourth album, Dark Pulse , drops next month on their own Blue Nine label, so keep that on your radar. To tide fans over and give them a taste of what’s to come, last month they released the second single off of Dark Pulse , “Just a Game,” which has a catchy 80’s EBM bassline that will stay thumping in your head for days. Dark Pulse follows up Body Machine and the Deceptio EP, both released in 2022, which combines rave elements alongside heavier industrial notes to create a darker synth-pop album.
The Neon Chronicles tour is about to wrap, but there are still a few dates left you can catch, and you can check out both Priest and Julien-K at Dark Force Fest on April 21 in New Jersey.

The Birthday Massacre
A Canadian darkwave ensemble who combine electronica, goth, and new wave, the Birthday Massacre emerged in 2000 under the moniker Imajica, and officially transitioned to their current name in time for the release of their 2002 debut, Nothing and Nowhere. They found mainstream success in the 2010s with the albums Hide and Seek (2012) and Under Your Spell (2017), both of which charted at home and abroad, and in 2020 they released their eighth studio effort, the dark and atmospheric Diamonds. The Birthday Massacre formed in London, Ontario, as Imagica — taken from the fantasy/horror novel of the same name by author Clive Barker. The founding lineup comprised frontwoman Chibi, guitarists Rainbow and M. Falcore, bassist Aslan, keyboardist Dank, and percussionist O.E. After recording a seven-song demo session, Dank left Imagica and the remaining members relocated to Toronto, where a second demo release followed in mid-2001. Upon renaming themselves the Birthday Massacre, the group issued their debut LP, Nothing & Nowhere, in the summer of 2002. With the resignation of O.E., the lineup welcomed keyboardist Adm and percussionist Rhim before recording a follow-up EP, 2004’s Violet. Adm quit the Birthday Massacre prior to an expanded European release of Violet on the German Repo label; in 2005, the band signed to the Metropolis imprint to issue the disc in North America and the U.K., adding keyboardist O-en for a tour of Western Europe. In 2007, the group released their third album, Walking with Strangers, on Metropolis, then set out on tour with Mindless Self Indulgence and Julien-K. Three years later, the band issued 2010’s Pins and Needles, followed up quickly by an EP, Imaginary Monsters, in 2011. Following 2012’s Hide and Seek, which enjoyed modest chart success and a warm critical reception, the Birthday Massacre turned to their fans to help crowdfund their sixth album, Superstition. Released in late 2014, the record was supported by a major North American tour as well as tours of Brazil and the U.K. Compiling original four-track demos from their early days, Imagica appeared in 2016. It was followed in the summer of 2017 by the studio album Under Your Spell, which made a strong showing on multiple U.S. Billboard charts. Three years later, the band returned with the brooding and mystical Diamonds, which also coincided with their 20th anniversary.
Amir Derakh, Ryan Shuck and Anthony “Fu” Valcic have been musical collaborators for 15+ years. During their time together they have weaved in and out of mainstream music like a constantly evolving musical fashion house. In the late 90’s they were responsible for massive radio and sales hits such as “Korn”, “Blue Monday”, “Stitches”, and “Fiction”, and recently “Crawl Back In” and “Let Down” (Dead By Sunrise with their close friend Chester Bennington). After enjoying years of traditional music business success, they have spent the last decade methodically moving away from the mainstream approach that put them on the map, opting to carefully steer their fans in a new direction, towards their new independent alternative electro rock project Julien-K – which sounds more at home with acts like Depeche Mode, The Kills, Nine Inch Nails, New Order, The Presets, Interpol, & Phantogram.

Priest returns to the U.S. for 2023 summer tour
The U.S. tour starts in San Diego on July 7.
Written by: Chris Brandon
Published on: June 27, 2023
Fresh off their performance at Seattle’s Mechanismus Festival, the Swedish synthpop act Priest is returning to the United States this summer. They’ll bring their irresistible blend of cyberpunk and synthpop to more U.S. cities, starting on July 7 in San Diego, California.
Priest visited the U.S. for the first time in fall 2022 for a handful of dates supporting Julien-K. Unfortunately, that tour got off to a rocky start due to travel and immigration issues, and Priest had to cancel some of their east coast dates.
They’re making up for it this summer by visiting 30 U.S. cities, including many towns like Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Odessa, Texas, that are often overlooked by European acts.
Priest will be joining Powerman 5000 and Julien-K on this tour. I believe Priest is the opening act in this lineup so be sure to arrive to these shows on time. Following the summer tour, Priest returns to the U.S. in October for a headlining performance at Absolution Fest in Tampa, Florida.
Tickets are already on sale for these shows. You can find links to purchase tickets at Priest’s website .
Priest will be playing songs from all three of their albums: New Flesh, Cyberhead, and their latest, Body Machine. (Read my review of Body Machine .)

Angel Olsen to open Songs From the Archive Tour in Northern California
Angel Olsen is setting out on a trip down memory lane for her upcoming solo tour, and Northern California audiences get first access.
The indie rock singer’s Songs From the Archive Tour is set to begin at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma on Sept. 8. She then plans to stop at a handful of intimate venues across the country before closing the tour in Red Bank, N.J., on Sept. 30. During the shows, Olsen plans to delve into her catalog and revisit deep cuts spanning more than 10 years’ worth of EPs and albums.
A ticket presale starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, and general sale begins at 10 a.m. Friday, April 19. A dollar from every ticket sold will benefit the Voter Formation Project , an organization that strives to register and mobilize voters.
The “Shut Up Kiss Me” singer’s Wine Country show is expected to feature singer-songwriter Maxim Ludwig, with whom Olsen recently covered Lou Reed’s “I Can’t Stand It” for a collaborative tribute album to the Velvet Underground member titled “The Power of the Heart: A Tribute to Lou Reed.” The album is scheduled for release on Saturday, April 20.
Ludwig previously joined Olsen as a special guest on select dates of her North American Forever Fall Tour last year in support of her “Forever Means” EP, which consists of four tracks that didn’t make it onto 2022’s “Big Time,” Olsen’s sixth and most country-influenced album.
No stranger to Northern California, Olsen played at Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park in 2021 and performed at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley the following year along with fellow indie rockers Sharon Van Etten and Boygenius ’ Julien Baker for their Wild Hearts Tour . Most recently, Olsen brought her Forever Tour to San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom for two nights in October 2023 before playing at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento.
