KALANGGAMAN ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE (Itinerary + Budget)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Sep 12, 2023 | Beaches , Kalanggaman , LEYTE , Travel Guide | 2 comments

Kalanggaman Island is  shaped like a bird, reason why its name is derived from the local word “langgam”  that means bird. This sandbar off the coast of Palompon, Leyte has gained popularity in recent years, but it has long been a local secret.  Kalanggaman is hemmed in by palm-studded, cream sand and lapped by swirling, turquoise sea.  It was already past summer when we visited, but this scruffy sandbar remained stunningly beautiful and blissfully devoid of luxury trappings. It’s a little crowded due to  the holiday, but we still managed to snag a spot.

Unknown to many tourists, Kalanggaman Island’s real gem is hidden underneath. This famous sandbar is actually a marine sanctuary oozing with gorgeous marine life and corals. In fact, it is a famous dive spots for divers coming from Malapascua Island, which is about 2 hours away by boat.  If you don’t know how to dive, you can snorkel in the reef drop-off near its shore.  Here’s my Kalanggaman Island Travel Guide with itinerary and budget to help you plan your trip.

TRAVEL BLOG CONTENTS

KALANGGAMAN PRE-TRIP PLANNING

LOBO, BATANGAS WEATHER

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT KALANGGAMAN ISLAND  :  The best time to visit Kalanggaman Island is during the summer season, from March to May.  You may also travel to Kalanggaman from November to February but try to avoid the months of  June to October due to the rainy season and possible storms.  Best to check the weather updates for your safety.

WHAT TO BRING IN KALANGGAMAN ISLAND:

Bring food and drinks. There’s no restaurant in the island, only 1 store.

Bring power bank as there is no electricity in Kalanggaman Island.

Bring coral-friendly sunblock and wear aqua shoes.

If you want to stay overnight, you can bring your tent or rent a tent forPHP 400/USD 7/EURO 6/SGD 10/MYR 30 per tent.

If you plan to snorkel, you can bring your snorkel gears or rent one from the boat operator or touts.  Fee is PHP 100/USD 2/EURO 2/SGD 3/MYR 8 – PHP 150/USD 3/EURO 2/SGD 4/MYR 11.

ATMs IN KALANGGAMAN ISLAND :  No ATMs in Kalanggaman Island, so stack up cash. You can withdraw cash in Palompon or Bogo.

MOBILE SIGNAL :  There’s a mobile signal, however data is intermittent. If you need a pocket Wi-Fi while traveling in the Philippines, you can RESERVE HERE.

BATHROOMS and TOILETS :  There are changing rooms in Kalanggaman Island and toilets but there’s no freshwater, only saline water. So, if you need to take a shower, better do it in Palompon. Anyway, soap, shampoos and detergents are strictly prohibited in Kalanggaman.

SAFETY IN KALAGGAMAN ISLAND :  During our visit, there were police officers in Kalanggaman Island. Not sure if they are actually stationed there or they were stationed there because there were a lot of tourists since it’s a holiday.  The island is pretty safe for tourists, however, follow the swimming protocols for your own safety. Your boatman or tour guide should instruct you as soon as you arrive in Kalanggaman. There’s also a medic station in case of untoward incidents.  Just a reminder:

Do NOT swim in the sandbar  area because of the dangerous rip currents. I was told there were tourists who drowned there even during our visit! There’s an area where it’s safe to swim, but not around the sandbar!

Wear life jacket when snorkeling for your safety.  There’s an area where you can snorkel.

Do not leave your things unattended.

Wear coral-friendly sunblock.

There’s a grilling station in Kalanggaman that you can use for free.

No electricity in the island, so charge your gadgets, bring extra batteries and bring a power bank.

Practice leave no trace, please! Do not take home sand as souvenir.

  • T8812PEsamanthag 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Long review but worth reading before booking The pick-up was at 3AM. We arrived at 6AM at Oslob. Local guide Diana met us there and took us to watch a one minute presentation that was very inaudible. After that she told us our timeslot to swim with the Whaleshark was in 3 hours. Why this could not be arranged more efficiently is beyond me, but we had to roll with it. She took us for our light breakfast and as a way of killing time in between we would go to sumilon island after breakfast. Great solution, if it wasn't for it being 7AM and the tide being way to high; there was no island! To make matters worse we were told we could only snorkel on one side of the island (where there was nothing to see) because the good side was only accessible with a guide (...). After a swim we went back and got offered lunch at the same place we had breakfast an hour earlier. After lunch we went for our swim with the whaleshark. There are about 100 people in the water at a go. They all got the info not to touche the whaleshark. Yet, the tourguides feed the Whaleshark and made him swim so close to the boat that there was just no space left to let him pass and unfortunally you could see one of them was previously injured by such a collid. It was amazing seeing them, but if the Whalesharks are good off at this place is very questionable. We were told the Tumalog falls were closed by the goverment until further notice and got reimburshed the entree fee. Therefore after Oslob we went to Pascador island. The island itself was not very impressive as Odette destroyed the corals back in 2021. We were very lucky to run in to a turtle by coincidence. That was an amzing experience. The sardine rush, right at the beach at the main island, was magical. The guide on the boat made some amazing recordings of us snorkeling amongst them. There was a turtle closer to the beach but the set up gave the impression the turtle was 'placed' there. He was in the shallow waters and - in my opinion - not given a lot of space to move freely. We were lucky enough to see one earlier to we left him to do his thing. After this started a 4 hours (!) ride back to the hotel. The day concluded at 7PM. Not so much because of the distance, but the traffic after work hours getting back into Cebu City are something to keep into account. Ludz was our driver and we asked him for recommendations on Halo Halo. He took us for a dragon fruit shake instead, one that I highly recommend you take him up on. All and all a very, very long day for which I'd advice to consider twice before booking. Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • Vacation15048020133 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles UNRELIABLE - DO NOT USE I booked this tour 6 weeks in advance and planned my trip to accommodate this, including a one night stay in Moalboal which was non-refundable. With less than 9hrs notice (bearing in mind the pick up time was 0330hrs), the tour was cancelled citing not enough people to go ahead. The only thing they offered was for me to pay triple the price to do the tour privately, despite knowing I would not be able to visit one of the main spots (Tumalog Falls) due to it being shut. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it’s extremely easy, cheaper and better to book direct from the tourism offices in Cebu/Moalboal. This company is only interested in money and doesn’t even provide you a driver that speaks English based on experience from a tour I did the following day with them (had no choice as I was unable to get a refund). Really would not recommended them at all. All of the locals are so keen to help and usually your accommodation will sort for you. Angry that any of my money ever went to this company. • Vacation15048020133 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do Not Book With Cebu Tours We were very disappointed with our tour to Bohol and the service received afterwards. The only reason this has one star is due to the driver being brilliant, and the chocolate hills being so beautiful. This tour included a number of stops, including Loboc River Cruise. We notified the tour and our driver on the day that we were vegetarian and were told this was no issue. There was absolutely no food at all for vegetarians (no fruit, plain rice nor noodles) and we were left with no choice but to not do it, resulting in our tour finishing extremely early and a lot of wasted time in the port. We were then taken to the illegitimate Tarsier Enchanted where they illegally breed tarsiers, have pythons in tiny cages or on hello kitty beds (not a joke!) and absolutely no butterflies, despite Butterfly Garden being mentioned as one of the stops. At no point were we informed that we would not be going to the legitimate sanctuary where they keep the Tarsiers in good conditions and were told it was our fault for not asking. When we asked for a refund for the Loboc cruise and Tarsier Sanctuary inc butterfly garden only (totalling a mere 2000php out of a 11,800php tour for 2 persons), we were told the whole day was our fault for not asking re the sanctuary and that we should’ve “made do” with the food on the cruise. Really bad experience with this tour and the driver could not believe how much we were paying, indicating he only got a tiny cut when he was the one doing all the work. My advice is to book your own ferry and organise a tour upon arrival at the port - so many drivers and companies all practically bite your hands off to show you around. • V2165VRivanm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience It was an amazing tour. We saw the whale sharks, the sea turtles and the sardines. My highlight was seeing the whale sharks for the first time in my life. Snorkeling was great. Our tour guide Edna and our driver Abam were very helpful. Unfortunately the waterfalls were closed, but that was not their fault. I would recommend this tour to everyone. Read more Written April 3, 2024
  • rafaelguilarcab 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Company/Service Good I think The only thing I didn't like was the turtle theme, let me explain. 1. Visit to an area where there were supposedly a lot of corals: there was almost nothing and I could only see two starfish, I don't know if the location was the cycle of marine life. 2. Turtles: there was only one. It was a mistake and I regret it, but it seemed to me (without considering myself an ultra defender of animals) an abuse to see the turtle with 40 people around it, it was inconceivable to me, an abuse of what its calm could be, because that's how turtles are. As a company you have to pay more attention to this, it was horrible and even more so how the guides pushed me to swim or try to pose next to them (although in general I think they were good guys). 3. Sardines: spectacular. 4. Canoyneering: best part, you are going to love it and the guys work great with the company. Read more Written March 30, 2024
  • Bethphelan1 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles 6 hour wait, Whales were amazing but tour disappointing This tour was unfortunately disappointing, yes the whale sharks were amazing and a great experience. However after departing at 3am we got to Oslob at 6:30am, after obtaining our ticket we waited for 6 hours at a restaurant, we were unable to apply sunscreen and did not have anything to do for 6 hours. We got to swim with the whale sharks at 12:30pm for 30 mins in choppy water. The experience was amazing to see these creatures however, this was an unacceptable wait and we should have been offered an activity or sightseeing while waiting. The falls were shut, which is due to the dry season and we knew in advance, however after the whale sharks we got to Maolboal at 3:15pm and was advised we were unable to go to Pescador island as it was shut (refund of 100peso provided). We were taken to the snorkelling area via land and we snorkelled for max 45mins in low visibility and a highly condensed area with people knocking into you which wasn't enjoyable. We were provided lunch at 10:30am and 7/11 snacks. There were amazing bars at the snorkelling but we were unable to stay at due to timing. I arrived back to my hotel at 8:40pm. Considering we left at 3am and arrived back at 8:40pm we only engaged in 1 hour and 15mins of activity in total. This was such a disappointing tour and should've been planned better. I do have to note Cesar the driver was amazing, he had such a long day and was super helpful, kind a patient. He works so hard. Paid full price for and found out the day off that the one of the hikes was not going to be visited due to dry season. Got reimbursed 100 PHP (50 PHP for each person). Swimming with the whale sharks made save the experience. Read more Written March 28, 2024

  • nicolewP1164RR 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles So cool This was a very cool tour with a very wonderful guide who was fun, nice, knowledgeable and had excellent photography skills lol. I believe her name was Diana. If not, the tour was on March 6 so I hope she does get credit for being great. The pick up time is veryyy early and the drive to the whales is quite long. Our impressive driver Arnold has a second career awaiting him as a race car driver lol but got us there safe and on time. He frequently checked to see if we were ok with the ride and we always were. The other reviews do a good job at describing the mad house that is the whale portion, however, my father is 73 and apparently seniors have priority so we were on the first boat. We rented the go pro and did not regret it. The guys on the boat are happy to take pics for you. The T waterfall was beautiful and Dad thought the fish pedicures were hilarious. We skipped the second waterfall as we thought the 4.5 hour drive back would be too much so opted for 3.5 instead lol. It's a very long ride and a very long day. Still I recommend it. • NyssaNyss 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Cebu Tours, not as amazing as the Rating given. We did a private van rental with driver for a 1 day trip to uphill spots and Mactan. The driver was friendly and drove us safely to each destination. He Provided extra insights regarding the places we went especially Temple of Leah. Sadly, I could not give a 5 despite the good service by the driver (although he was quite late to arrive for our pickup) because I’m commenting about the company. Whilst they’re very responsive to our inquiries when we needed to book, they weren’t responsive at all when we needed clarifications on the amount we paid after the day ended. The driver told us to communicate with the office but they chose to ignore our calls and emails. We did not actually go to Mactan, somehow, we forgot about it because our teens started feeling unwell, so we went back straight to the hotel. Being #1 in TripAdvisor and people’s choice award, we felt scammed by this company and it’s not the Filipino hospitality I expected when they chose not to respond and we definitely paid more than what we were quoted over the phone vs email. The company refused to respond even after days of follow up, so we just gave up. The extra monies they took was definitely a shame. Read more Written March 14, 2024

Welcome to Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman Island used to be unknown and unmapped when I first set foot in the island in 2010. It was tagged as enchanted and mystical by the locals, a place they didn’t want to visit. But in the recent years, the island made it to the list of most sought after beach destinations in the country, putting the town of Palompon in the tourism map of the Philippines.

Approximately 750 meters long, Kalanggaman Island is small uninhabited island off the coast of the town of Palompon in the Province of Leyte. It is blessed with long stretches of white sandbar on both end. It is a popular dive site for those based in Malapascua Island of Cebu, declared as marine sanctuary in 2009.

Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman Island is flat and surrounded with white sand made from crushed corals. The eastern and western tips are sandbars that blend well with the azure water. During broad daylight, the sandbars shine like a pearl… beautifully inviting!

It is not the only island of this kind in the country, but Kalanggaman Island has distinct charm that sets it apart from the others. Come and experience Kalanggaman Island, Leyte’s shining jewel.

The age-old question before any trip to a new destination – will it live up to the hype? I had the same question in mind as we made our way to Kalanggaman Island from Palompon. But as I watched the island emerge from the distance, my doubts were quickly put to rest. This place is truly a sight to behold!

view of Kalanggaman Island from the boat

I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was the paradise I’ve been dreaming of – a quiet and undeveloped island that exudes a laid-back vibe. Its natural beauty was breathtaking, and I loved that it had no hotels, cafes, or bars. It was just us, the sun, sand, and sea!

kalanggaman island tour package 2023

Upon our arrival, we wasted no time and headed straight to the stunning sandbar on the left side of the island facing Palompon. Despite the blazing sun, I was in awe of the view. The crystal clear waters and blue skies were a sight to behold. However, we were warned by the tourism officer that swimming in the sandbar area is not advisable due to strong currents. So take this advice seriously when planning your visit, no matter how inviting it may seem.

kalanggaman island tour package 2023

While the sand may not be as fine as in other popular beach destinations in the Philippines, the natural beauty of the island more than makes up for it. Lucky for us, we arrived on a Monday when most weekend tourists had left. Although there were a couple of other groups on the island, it felt like we had the place almost entirely to ourselves.

What is the best month to go to Kalanggaman Island?

The best time to go to Kalanggaman Island is during the summer months (March to May). Expect many tourists during weekend, so better schedule your trip on weekdays.

Can I stay overnight in Kalanggaman Island?

Yes! Although there are no fancy resorts, you can stay in a nipa hut or a tent for about 500-750 pesos. You can also pitch your own tent and pay a minimal fee.

The restrooms and shower areas in the island are primitive, so if you are maarte like me, expect the unexpected. Lol. Don’t fret, though! There are shower facilities in the tourism office, which you can use once you get back the next day to Palompon.

Where to eat in Kalanggaman Island?

There are no restaurants and carinderia , so make sure to buy your food supplies in Palompon Market. There is no source of potable water in the island, so make sure to bring enough drinking water to last until the next day. Also, you will be given a few gallons of water by the tourism office (depends on how many people in your boat), which you can use for cleaning utensils, bathing etc.

There is no electricity in the island. They have generators used mainly for lighting at night. Don’t forget to bring power banks for your gadgets.

Travel Guide to Kalanggaman Island, Philippines (DIY Guide from a Local)

If you want white sand and blue waters, Kalanggaman Island in Leyte is one of the most famous places to go. It’s located in the Municipality of Palompon, which is proudly my home town. Check out this travel guide to Kalanggaman Island . Here, you’ll know What To Do, How to Go There, and some Expenses you’ll be paying on your trip.

Palompon, Leyte Travel Guide from a Local Kalanggaman Island and More!

Kalanggaman Island got its name because it resembles a bird, which in Bisaya is “langgam”. Enjoy the fantastic sand bar, count the stars, and relax here with family and friends. Tourists are limited in this area, so you’ll surely have a place for yourself. Coming here is a trip worth remembering.

What to do in Kalanggaman Island

1. walk all over the island.

Palompon, Leyte Travel Guide from a Local Kalanggaman Island and More!

Kalanggaman Island is only 753 meters. On one side, you’ll see a long sand bar filled with white sand and with blue waters. On the other, you’ll see trees and plants and could take a picture of the treehouse.  Enjoy the beauty of this uninhabited Island, especially with your loved ones.

2. Swim on the blue waters

No need to swim farther to get vitamin sea; the water is already as high as your hips or necks after a few steps. We usually swim near the boats, so that we could hang there in case it’s deep. However, you’ll need to check the signs as there are places that are not safe for swimming (the rocky area mostly).

3. Have a Pictorial

Travel Guide to Kalanggaman Island (DIY Guide from a Local)

With a naturally gorgeous backdrop, you’ll love taking pictures everywhere from the sandbar to the west side. Many of my friends did a prenuptial shoot in this Island; it’s so stunning! You won’t regret it. Better bring a gorgeous dress or swimming attire and your favorite camera, and take a lot of pictures to post on Insta or FB!

4. Count the stars or the shells

If you find yourself staying overnight, you’ll love watching the night sky. There’s limited electricity here, so the lights usually are from fire torches or phones. It’s so dark that you’ll fall in love with the stars, especially in the sand bar area. However, if you can’t stay overnight, check out some shells!

5. Enjoy with Family and Friends

Plan a trip with family and/or friends in Kalanggaman Island. Everyone will love it! I’ve been here twice, first with my co-workers and family, and lately, with my high school friends, it has been a blast. Bring a lot of food, too, as there is no internet, your bond will grow stronger!

Here are the expenses you might incur during your trip to Kalanggaman Island:

Entrance Fees

(These are the rates if you are not a Palomponganon)

For the students and senior citizens, you may be asked to present a valid ID.

Here are the prices for the pump boats, usually the tourism officers will arrange what pump boat you will ride to the Island. The operators have their turns as per the tourism office. As for the payment, if you are the only one group riding the boat, you’ll have to shoulder all of the cost. However, if you are groups or a joiner, the price may be divided on how many you are.

For safety purposes, it can’t exceed capacity. So, for example, you are 41, even though the extra is a child, you’ll be asked to go to another boat. The coast guards usually check it before you can go to the Island. Travel time is about 45 minutes to an hour.

  • up to 15 pax – PHP 3,000
  • 15-20 pax – PHP 3,500
  • 20-30 pax – PHP 4,000
  • 30-40 pax – PHP 4,500

For example, you are only 5; sometimes, the tourism officer will ask a group of 10 if it will be okay for you to join them. Sometimes, if there are many small groups or joiners, the officers will also group them according to the capacity of the boat. Boat rental is given to the drivers and not the tourism officers.

  • Tipi Cottages – PHP 1,000 for 2 persons with free breakfast
  • Cottage Rentals – PHP 250 – 700
  • Tents – PHP 300
  • Tables and Chairs – PHP 10 – 100

There is only one store in Kalanggaman Island that sells necessities like snacks, water, noodles, few drinks, and coffee. You’ll have to buy food in the market. The market is near the Tourism Office; you can go there via a shortcut from the Baywalk or the Civic Center.

There are 2 cooking areas on the Island, so you’ll need to buy coal or firewood to cook there. It’s highly recommended to buy food and drinks in the market or grocery store before boarding the boat.

How to go to Palompon / Kalanggaman Island

There are no airports in Palompon, Leyte, but the nearest ones are Cebu and Tacloban. From Manila or any other part of the Philippines, it’s recommended to go via Cebu or Tacloban.

Palompon, Leyte Travel Guide from a Local Kalanggaman Island and More!

  • If nights are not right for you, then try the route to Ormoc City. From Cebu, you can ride Fast Crafts (PHP 700 – PHP 1,000) to Ormoc City; it will be about a 2-3 hour ride. The first trip is early in the morning at about 5 am until 5 pm. From Ormoc, you can catch a van in Robinsons Ormoc to Palompon. It will take about 1 to 1.5 hours and cost you PHP 120.00.
  • Another option is having a day trip here from Malapascua Island (PHP 800 – 1,200)

From Tacloban

  • Go to Abucay Bus Terminal near Robinsons Tacloban. There are buses and vans from Tacloban to Palompon. The first trip is about 3 or 4 am, and the last trip is 5:45 pm, but if there are many passengers, it might go earlier. The van costs PHP 225.00. Travel time is 3 hours.
