Add this tourism village in Kerala to your itinerary

The recent recognition of Kanthalloor in Kerala’s Idukki district as one of India’s top five tourism villages exemplifies its commitment to ecological sustainability, agricultural prosperity, and responsible tourism.

Vignesh A Dec 12, 2023 Kanthalloor, Kerala

  • Village Vibe

Hidden from Kerala’s sun-kissed and rain-drenched tourist havens on the bountiful hills of the Western Ghats , the village of Kanthalloor stands out as a unique and late-blooming gem. For decades, only the most intrepid of travellers ventured into this village in Idukki district seeking the thrill of being one of the few brave enough to enter the wilderness where the road ends.

Kanthalloor, a Tamil-speaking village in a Malayalam-speaking state, was overshadowed by the popular hill station Munnar, just 50 km away. But the village has recently carved a place for itself on the tourism map.

In September 2023, the Kanthalloor gram panchayat secured the central government’s prestigious “gold” award given to five villages in the “best rural tourism villages” category – the sole winner from southern India.

Kacharam falls in Keezhanthoor is a prime destination for tourists and trekkers alike.

That’s not its only claim to fame. Nestled just 14km apart, Kanthalloor and Marayoor stand adorned with an exclusive honour – the geographical indication (GI) tags for Kanthaloor Vattavada garlic and Marayoor jaggery. This is the shortest distance between two GI-tagged locations in the country.

The Kanthalloor panchayat encompasses 13 villages and clusters of small hamlets comprising approximately 10 to 50 households each. These villages cradle traditions as rare as their distinguished produce and natural beauty.

Hidden gems

Beyond the tourist’s gaze lies the intrinsic allure of Kanthalloor. Its matchless charm stems from its geography, flowing eastwards towards Tamil Nadu, the Pambaaru, aptly named “snake river”, meanders through Kanthalloor’s verdant valleys – a rare spectacle among Kerala’s westward-flowing rivers.

Amidst this natural spectacle, Kanthalloor boasts three big waterfalls, along with numerous small ones. Arumbuli falls in Keezhanthoor is a discreet peek into nature’s artistry. For the adventurous, Kacharam falls invites exploration into forested realms. Alongside the road in Kovilkadavu, Irachil Para falls beckons, a popular yet captivating cascade.

Pambaaru river’s eagle view from Maryoor.

While southern landscapes rarely echo with the chants of Ram temples, Kanthalloor defies expectations. Perumala village, nestled in the embrace of dense forests, cradles a shrine dedicated to god Ram. Locals share whispers of a tunnel beneath the temple, weaving a mysterious connection to Madurai of Tamil Nadu .

Also, the village harbours a profound surprise at Anakottapara Park – a rocky terrain concealing 15 prehistoric dolmens, burial chambers from ancient times. These “Muniyara”, as locals call them, crafted from megaliths between 3,000 BCE and 14,000 BCE, stand as silent witnesses to Kanthalloor’s rich history.

Tourism takes root

With so much to showcase, the Kerala tourism department picked Kanthalloor among 10 villages to nurture them for the central government’s award under its Sustainable, Tangible, Responsible, Experimental, Ethnic Tourism Hubs (STREET) initiative.

Sustained efforts over the past few years paid off eventually. While Pinarayi in Kannur district – the native village of Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan – was one of the candidates, Kanthalloor claimed the “gold”.

Kanthalloor introduced women-friendly tourism practices and special women-oriented tour packages.

“We’ve installed a ‘Take a Break’ centre for breastfeeding mothers in Keezhanthoor village. Work is underway for two more at Keezhanthoor and Kovilkadavu. Despite aggressive plastic waste segregation, we seek government permission for a green check-post to halt the entry of plastic into our villages,” said panchayat president PT Mohandas, sharing the secret of their success – a tourist-centric approach harmonized with unwavering sustainability.

In a holistic approach to enhancing the tourist experience, various initiatives were undertaken, including maintaining street lights, installing public water vending machines, and placing destination signboards.

Water kiosks dispense cold water for Re 1 and hot water for Rs 5, transcending the hurdles of remote hilly landscapes. To further enrich the rural tourism experience, distinct areas were designated vegetable, fruit, and flower streets.

As whispers of eco-tourism flutter through the village, the systematic collection of waste from households and tourism properties was established. Shop owners gently remind tourists of blue and green dustbins, nurturing a shared responsibility for waste disposal.

Garlic, molasses and more

In the tapestry of Kanthalloor’s success, agro-economy and eco-tourism intertwine seamlessly. With a population exceeding 8,000, agriculture remains the lifeblood. Fruits and vegetables find eager buyers among the tourists, offering a unique farm-to-table experience.

The village’s economy revolves around agro-products, with GI-tagged garlic and jaggery being prime exports. The success story includes farmers saving on transportation costs. “Buyers directly visit our farms. The Kanthalloor Vattavada garlic, a 100-day crop, stays fresh for over a year,” said V Narayanasamy, a 49-year-old garlic farmer, highlighting the GI tag’s impact.

S Palaniyammal, a 47-year-old sugarcane farmer and Marayoor jaggery manufacturing unit owner, echoed the sentiment. “In the plains, a tonne of sugarcane sells for Rs 2,000. Here, sugarcane sells for about Rs 8,000 a tonne, not just for the crop but for our efforts to protect them from the ever-raiding elephants,” she said.

44-year-old Vasanthi Ganesan, who owns an outlet selling the prized garlic and fruits, attested the bustling sales of over Rs 10,000 a day during peak seasons to Kanthalloor’s economic prowess.

Kanthalloor, etched with stories in every leaf and stone, invites the world to join its harmonious pirouette – a dance that whispers tales of endurance, bounty, and the rhythmic heartbeat of a village crowned in gold.

Kanthalloor, a little Europe in Idukki

 alt=

If you are ready for a stroll through trees rich in oranges and orchards heavily laden with juicy apples, drive up the Western Ghats to the little village of Kanthalloor in Idukki district. Visually breathtaking, the little nook nestles within the Western Ghats at a height of 5000 ft above sea level, not far from Munnar. Welcome to Kerala’s Little Europe and enjoy your stay at the Cheeni Hills Home Stay.

Cheeni Hills is a nine-acre beautiful arbour of delight abounding in fruits and vegetables. Kanthalloor is the only place in Kerala where apples grow naturally and are farmed in plenty. The heaviest crop of the fruit comes from Cheeni Hills.

Apart from apple, Kanthalloor grows orange, sweet lemon (mausambi), strawberry, blue passion fruit, tree tomato, guava and lemon. Tourists and visitors can buy fresh, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables when they are harvested. They are also welcome to pluck the fruits and purchase them.

The picturesque village is turning out to be a tourist hotspot because of its cool, and balmy weather all through the year. The number of visitors keeps swelling with each year. It’s the perfect getaway from the city’s frenzied life. As the resorts here offer all comfort, folks keep coming back to the place.

The highlight of the hill paradise is the number of vantage points from where sunrise and sunset can be viewed. The travel up throws up a lot of hitherto unseen sights. The life of the forest dwellers, their huts made of bamboo and grass are sure to delight people. You can collect wild honey, Java plum (njaval)  tree tomato and guava as you drive along.

One can also cover other lesser-known tourist spots like Keezhanthoor and Ottamala on this trip. But you will need sturdy jeeps to carry you up these places. Hence, travel schedules have to be informed in advance. The spot, “Vettakkaran Kovil” lies on the way to Ottamala. Interestingly, the wild and barren mountain, “Bhramaram Point”, where the Mohanlal movie “Bhramaram” was shot can also be seen here.

Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in Kerala

Photo of currylines

Is a Plum assignment defined as a great job to have or a project where Plums hang within reach of your nose ?

The latter is exactly what my latest adventure is about. And not just plums but several exotic fruits within my heart’s reach !!!

Now what would come to mind when one hears the words apple, peach, plum, pear, deodar and ‘Chinnar’ ? Kashmir … or Shimla perhaps ? Would you consider Kerala as a possibility ??? Highly unlikely right ?

Well, while Chinnar is the name of the adjoining wildlife sanctuary (and merely sounds like the Chinar tree), the rest of the trees indeed flourish in this little hill station called Kanthalloor, my latest discovery, that is actually known as the Shimla of Kerala. And when I say known, I mean by the very few people who are aware of its existence.

My stay was at the utterly charming Minister’s Mansion in the little village and this narration will take you through an overview of this holiday home as well as the sight seeing attractions in the surrounding forests and mountains.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 2/19 by currylines

About Kanthalloor –

Kanthalloor is a hidden gem nestling in the midst of the forested evergreen Anamudi Shola ranges of the Western ghats.

Located in the Idukki district of Kerala (God’s own country), this piece of paradise is situated 14 km away from the main road that leads from Udumalpet towards Munnar. The distance to Munnar is 60 km.

This tiny village is a mere 3 km in diameter but packs a concentrated punch of organically grown exotic fruits, vegetables and flowers and these are the major attraction here. The garlic grown here is of a special variety and is very famous. Local shops have an abundance of garlic bunches hanging from the roofs and one can be sure that no vampire will ever be found in the vicinity of this little place :-D

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 3/19 by currylines

The salubrious climate that is conducive to both flora and human beings, enjoys temperatures that range from near zero to barely above 22 deg c from winter to summer and creates a veritable heaven for those coming from hotter climes.

Fruit and vegetable stalls, roadside food shacks, fruit orchards, vegetable farms and flower gardens make up most of the village.

Where to stay -

There are a few home stays that one can locate via the sign boards and they offer rooms and home style food. Many of them are tiny and very basic.

There are also a few holiday homes and also some upcoming resorts.

I stayed at the Minister’s Mansion which is one of the more organized and comfortable places to be in. It has the added advantage of being within the village and close to the shops and other habitation.

The main building is a heritage bungalow that is supposed to be a 100 years old and belonged to a headman (called manthri or minister) of Kanthalloor. An old sign post that also appears to be a 100 years old :-D lies forlornly by the side of the gate which now bears the bright new sign.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 4/19 by currylines

This beautiful stone bungalow was bought by the present owners 7 years ago and converted into a holiday home. The original building was modified into 2 suites and a deluxe room on the ground floor and 3 deluxe rooms on the first floor. The suites are equipped with faux fireplaces and a colonial aura clings to the decor, despite the modern fittings and Television.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 5/19 by currylines

The lawn in front of the building is well maintained and at the far end there is a provision for a bonfire which one can surround, seated on the little tree stumps fixed under the apple trees. The rooms look out onto the many fruit trees like Plum, apple, soursop (cherimoya) etc. The air is fresh and pure and just breathing it is great way to detox our pollution affected city lungs.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 7/19 by currylines

The food at the hotel was homely and extremely simple. They have a limited variety that consists of some Kerala dishes and what they call ‘North Indian’ which is basically chapathis with dal and a side dish.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 9/19 by currylines

Dining options are not too many in the village and consist mainly of small shacks.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 10/19 by currylines

Things to do -

Kanthalloor and its surroundings are a part of the Shola evergreen forest ranges and the rugged terrain provides scenic beauty in the form of waterfalls, mountain views, eucalyptus forests and the wildlife that they hold within.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 11/19 by currylines

Trekking and going on a main road safari are some of the adventure activities, though there is not much wildlife apart from the usual gaur, peacocks, wild boar etc.

The Ervaikulam National Park is not too far away and is home to the Nilgiris Thar. Be aware that the park is open only in certain seasons.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 13/19 by currylines

Visiting the fruit orchards and flower farms, ancient temples, home based jaggery making units, the mystical stones relics called Dolmens, etc are some of the things one can do in the surroundings of the village.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 14/19 by currylines

The nearby town of Munnar has its own share of tourist attractions and one can stay in Kanthalloor and do a day trip, if one does not want to particularly stay in Munnar.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 17/19 by currylines

There are several waterfalls like the Thoovanam, Karimutty and Lakkam and many others that one can view, some from afar and some up close.

Photo of Kanthalloor - A hidden gem in  Kerala 18/19 by currylines

There is also the Amaravathi dam and crocodile farm near Udumalpet and also the Mattupetty dam in Munnar.

Home based shops and small businesses also sell jams, preserves, sauces and wines made from some of the fruits.

Best time to visit –

The climate is good throughout the year.

Summers are moderate and fruits like peaches, plums, tree tomatoes, strawberry, blackberry and passion fruit are available from mid April onwards.

July to September also sees pears, black sapote, pomegranates and oranges.

September onwards the apples are ready for harvest but the weather does get very chilly, touching near zero temperatures in December and January.

Getting there -

Kanthalloor is 460 km from Bangalore.

Going by road by car or cab will take around 8 hours. The route to take would be Bangalore-Hosur-Salem-Udumalpet-Marayoor-Kanthalloor. The roads are very good, there are decent restaurants along the way and most importantly Tamil Nadu seems to have clean public rest rooms at frequent intervals, which is a boon.

The nearest airports are Cochin (178 km – 5 hour drive) and Coimbatore (145 km – 3.5 hour drive) and these are also the nearest major railway stations. From these 2 cities the best way to get to Kanthalloor would be to hire a cab. There are also buses that ply to various nearby towns like Udumalpet, Marayoor and Munnar, from where one has to again depend on the resort or private cab to get across the last bit.

From Bangalore, comfortable Munnar bound, multi axle, AC sleeper buses also ply during the day and night. The duration is around 10 hours and an overnight bus journey will take one directly to Marayoor which is 14 km from Kanthalloor. Local transport will be needed for the final part.

This month is dedicated to celebrating the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on American culture and society. According to  recent census data , Santa Clara has a significant Asian population, comprising 45.9% of the city's demographic makeup, specifically categorized as "Asian alone."

We are proud to be the home of many Asian-American residents and businesses. There are numerous AAPI-owned businesses spread throughout Santa Clara that we encourage you to explore. Notably, along El Camino Real, there is a stretch of various strip malls containing many fantastic Korean-owned restaurants, an area Santa Clara proudly calls “Koreatown.”

There are countless businesses, and we couldn't possibly name them all, but we recommend researching some spots on Yelp or Google. To get you started, here are some fan-favorite restaurants that the team at Discover Santa Clara has visited and recommended.
