Torrei Hart recently announced that she's going on tour with Katt Williams , and the ex-wife of the comedian Kevin Hart has long been confident in her comedic abilities.

According to documents filed as part of Torrei and Kevin Hart's divorce proceedings in 2011 and viewed by Business Insider, Torrei Hart was once involved in developing a reality-TV show dubbed "Comedy Wives." The show would follow her, Lisa Wayans, Mandie Taketa, and Blake Sunshine as they navigated their personal and professional lives in Hollywood.

As treatments for the show included in the court documents explain, each of these women was "connected to one of the biggest figures in the comedy world" at the time — Lisa Wayans (née Thorner) was married to comedian Damon Wayans for nearly 20 years, Taketa was briefly married to Wayne Brady, and, at the time of the pitch, Sunshine was in a relationship with Donnell Rawlings.

In blurbs for "Comedy Wives," Torrei Hart was described as being responsible for Kevin Hart's successful career.

"Torrei was married to Kevin Hart for eight years, molding his career and turning him into the star he is today," her bio read, according to the court documents.

Torrei and Kevin Hart divorced in 2011 after getting married in 2003.

And as BI's Lauren Edmonds and Ayomikun Adekaiyero reported, Torrei Hart announced on Instagram Monday that she would be joining Williams' "Dark Matter Tour" for select dates in January and February.

The news came less than a week after Williams mocked and criticized Kevin Hart on Shannon Sharpe's "Club Shay Shay" podcast, reigniting the pair's yearslong feud .

In the episode, Williams suggested Kevin Hart was an industry plant who didn't earn his way to the top.

"In 15 years in Hollywood, no one in Hollywood has a memory of going to a sold-out Kevin Hart show, there being a line for him, ever getting a standing ovation at any comedy club," Williams added.

Kevin Hart responded to Williams' blows the next day on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing , "Gotta get that anger up outcha champ…. It's honestly sad."

The two have exchanged jabs over the years, dating at least to 2014. In 2016, Williams even apologized to Kevin Hart on the radio.

Kevin Hart seems unbothered by Torrei Hart's decision to join Williams' tour.

When TMZ asked Kevin Hart what he thought about his ex-wife joining Williams' tour, he said, "I want everybody to win. I hope the tour is great!"

Torrei hart, who is also a longtime comedian, announced that she is joining williams on his highly-anticipated 'dark matters' tour..

Kevin Hart is taking the high road when it comes to his ex-wife’s business endeavors.

As we all know, just last week Katt Williams absolutely eviscerated all of his competition during a lengthy sit-down interview with Shannon Sharpe on his “Club Shay Shay” podcast. Among the comedians he went after, Hart was one of them.

When speaking on Hart, Williams went at his entire origin story, claiming that he was an “industry plant.”

He stated, “In 15 years in Hollywood, no one in Hollywood has a memory of going to a sold-out Kevin Hart show…there being a line for him, him getting a standing ovation at any comedy club. He already had his deals when he got here…what do you think a plant is?”

Hart responded on ESPN’s “NBA Unplugged” last week with a little sarcasm by suggesting Katt exaggerates: “Another fun fact about the New York Knicks... Katt Willams bought the Knicks. It’s rumored that he took the Knicks back, returned them with a receipt.”

He later added, “Known fact, Katt Williams has an NBA basketball court in his living room... he’s the first to embrace a true hardwood floor.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have beef.

Instead of firing back with words, Williams just got Hart’s ex-wife, Torrei, to join him on his “Dark Matters” tour. While it might sound like a random collaboration, Torrei is an accomplished comedian in her own right.

On Monday, Torrei posted wrote on Instagram, “ #Charlotte #Orlando #Tampa , come see me live with my good friend @kattwilliams on the Dark Matters tour.”  

Despite the way Kevin may feel about Williams, he isn’t too angry about his ex-wife and enemy going on tour together. In a short run-in with TMZ on Tuesday, the popular comedian said, “I want everybody to win. I hope the tour is great.”

In the same breath, Torrei has no ill feelings towards her ex-husband and said her collab with Williams has nothing to do with their beef. During her run-in with TMZ the same day, she stated, “Kevin loves everybody, right? So there’s no beef.”

When asked if she was brought on tour to make Kevin upset, she answered, “Why would he do that? Me and Katt are friends, we go back like 20 years. We’re so close to the point where Katt babysat my dog.”

There we have it folks. It seems that Kevin and Torrei are on cordial terms.

During Katt Williams' off-the-cuff interview with Shannon Sharpe that dropped last week, he said he and Kevin Hart hadn't been in the same building in over 25 years. Well, that's sorta about to change by way of another Hart. Still, Kevin is taking the high road.

In what appears to be an ironic twist of fate, Kevin's ex-wife Torrei Hart broke the news on Tuesday (Dec. 9) via Instagram that she would be joining the "Friday After Next" star on tour.

"Come see me live with my good friend @kattwilliams on the Dark Matters tour,” she captioned her post on the app. 

The post accompanied a photo of her and Williams and a snippet from his sit-down with Sharpe. "I only put on comedians that are funnier than me," Williams said in part during the clip.

But there’s no bad blood from Hart about this new comedy duo. When asked about Torrei joining Williams, he told TMZ , “My success is my success,” adding, “I want everybody to win, I love everybody.”

“I hope the tour is great.”

The timing of Torrei's announcement comes on the heels of that now infamous "Club Shay Shay" episode in which Williams called out numerous comedians, including her ex-husband Kevin.

Later, Williams called Hart a “gatekeeper” who aided in the success of Tiffany Haddish . “Didn’t Kevin open the gate and let Tiffany in? There are 100 gates out here. Everyone I’ve seen got a keeper.”

Torrei Hart, Kevin Hart’s Ex-Wife, Set to Join Katt Williams on Upcoming Comedy Tour

Torrei Hart, the ex-wife of comedian Kevin Hart, will be going on tour with Katt Williams. Yes, you read that right.

The announcement follows Hart and Williams recently exchanging words, following the latter’s appearance on Club Shay Shay. Torrei Hart, also a comedian, revealed she would be joining Williams on select dates with more on the way.

“Come see me live with my good friend @kattwilliams on the Dark Matter Tour,” Torrei wrote on Instagram.

During NBA Unplugged , which he hosts alongside his Plastic Cup Boyz on ESPN, Hart got some jokes in while watching the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers.

“Another fun fact about the New York Knicks, I don’t know if you guys know this, but Katt Williams bought the Knicks, and it’s rumored that he took the Knicks back, returned them with a receipt,” Hart said. “He’s the first person to ever do that. He bought them for 15 days and returned them. That’s another fun fact about the New York Knicks.”

He added a couple more jokes about Williams’ claims about reading 3,000 books in a year at age six and stating he runs a 4.1 40-yard-dash time.

Comedian Katt WIlliams really shook the room among rappers and comedians alike on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, which has prompted almost all the people mentioned to respond, including famous funnyman Kevin Hart.

Katt suggested that Hart is an “industry plant,” asking, “Has there ever been a comedian to get their own sitcom and a starring role in a movie like Hart did with ‘Soul Plane’ on their first year in Los Angeles?”

Hart responded to Williams on X, saying, “Gotta get that anger up outcha champ….It’s honestly sad. In the meantime…. Please enjoy MY MOVIE TRAILER to my next film ‘LIFT’ which will be dropping on @netflix in 8 days!!!!! There is a moment in the trailer where @gugumbatharaw says ‘They Really Love You’….I now know she’s talking about ‘Katt’ Mark yo calendars world!!!! This one is SPECIAL!!!!”

Earlier this week, Kevin Hart’s ex-wife , Torrei Hart, announced that she would be joining Katt Williams on a few dates in support of “The Dark Matter Tour.” On Wednesday (Jan. 10), TMZ caught up with Kevin to ask about his feelings on the situation.

“I want everybody to win. I love everybody,” the Fatherhood actor stated. “I hope the tour is great.”

On the same day, TMZ published another interview with Torrei, who shared much of the same sentiments as her former spouse. “Kevin loves everybody, right? So there’s no beef,” she said, “You saw the interview. There’s no beef.”

She also made it clear that her inclusion on “The Dark Matter Tour” has nothing to do with any feud. “Me and Katt are friends, we go back like 20 years. We’re so close to the point where Katt babysat my dog,” Torrei added before saying that she would join Kevin on tour if ever provided the opportunity.

The aforementioned development came a week after Katt provided scathing opinions on Kevin and several other comedians during a sit-down on Shannon Sharpe’s “ Club Shay Shay ” podcast.

“In 15 years in Hollywood, no one in Hollywood has a memory of a sold-out Kevin Hart show, there being a line for him, [or] ever getting a standing ovation at any comedy club,” Katt claimed before calling Kevin an industry plant. “Have we heard of a comedian that came to LA, and in his first year in LA, he had his own sitcom on network television, and had his own film called Soul Plane that he was leading? No. We’ve never heard of that before that person or since that person.” Kevin soon responded to the accusations, both while promoting his upcoming movie, Lift , and through appearances on FOX 5 DC and ESPN’s “ NBA Unplugged .”

Here’s What Kevin Hart Had to Say About Ex-Wife Torrei’s Tour Dates With Katt Williams

At this point, Katt Williams' 'Club Shay Shay' interview has spawned dozens of additional headlines, including this one.

Kevin Hart hopes Torrei Hart ’s run of tour dates with Katt Wiliams is a success.

As shared by TMZ this week, the Lift star was questioned by a paparazzo in New York about the upcoming dates, which are part of Williams’ The Dark Matter Tour. First, Hart spoke more generally about his career in relation to his mention in Williams’ still-being-discussed Club Shay Shay interview .

“My success is my success,” he said. “I want everybody to win. I love everybody.”

Then came the Torrei-focused question, prompting the comedian to reiterate his “love everybody” approach.

“I want everybody to win,” Hart, who also gave a firm thumbs-up to the camera, said. “I hope the tour is great.”

As previously reported , Torrei Hart, who was married to Kevin from 2003 to 2011, will be joining Katt for three shows starting with a stop at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina later this month. While only three shows featuring Torrei were initially announced, she teased that "more dates" would be confirmed soon.

While Kevin kept it supportive when speaking on Torrei's tour dates, he took a different approach in his previous response to Katt referring to him as a " plant " in his blockbuster interview with Shannon Sharpe .

"Gotta get that anger up outcha champ….It’s honestly sad," Hart said in a recent Lift -promoting tweet.

As for the rest of Katt's tour, it's indeed another massive one from the prolific comic. In fact, his current Dark Matter schedule sees him on the road through the middle of May.

Torrei Hart has denied speculation that her recent inclusion on Katt Williams ‘ Dark Matter comedy tour is an attempt to bother her ex-husband, Kevin Hart .

However, Torrei added that if such a collaboration were to occur, the onus would fall on Hart to make that offer. “He needs to do that,” she said of Hart bringing her on the road. “He needs to set that up.”

While the timing of Hart’s addition to Williams’ Dark Matter Tour caused many to deem it as a chess move in William’s beef with the Ride Along star, she’s already performed alongside Williams on at least one occasion, according to her official website.

In addition to launching the popular YouTube channel Pretty Funny Fish , Torrei has also shared stages with comedic greats such as Matin Lawrence, Alex Thomas, and Chris Spencer throughout her own comedic career.

According to Hart, Williams providing his ex-wife with a platform is a non-issue, as he recently told TMZ that he wishes Torrei, as well as the tour, the best. “I want everybody to win,” the 44-year-old said. “I hope the tour is great.”

Hart also spoke on Williams’ assertion that his success was a byproduct of him being an “industry plant,” which the Ohio native made during his now viral appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast last week.

“You don’t entertain the circus – you watch it.”

Kevin Hart is sharing his thoughts about his ex-wife’s announcement that she’s hitting the road to go on tour with “good friend” Katt Williams despite his comments about Hart during his explosive Club Shay Shay interview .  

A TMZ reporter asked Hart to share his thoughts on Williams’ trying to downplay his achievements.  

“My success is my success,” he replied before adding, “I want everybody to win. I love everybody.” 

When asked about ex-wife Torrei Hart’s revelation that she’s going on tour with Katt Williams , the comic returned a mature response.  “I hope the tour is great,” he stated. 

During his viral chat with Shannon Sharpe, Katt Williams branded longtime rival Kevin Hart an industry plant. Hart initially responded with a post urging Williams to “get that anger up outcha champ….It’s honestly sad.” 

The actor and comedian also addressed the feud during a FOX 5 interview to promote his new movie “Lift. Echoing his remarks about his ex-wife’s upcoming tour, Kevin Hart insisted he’s unbothered by the fuss. 

“You don’t entertain a circus, you watch it” Hart said, summarizing his thoughts on the drama. “When the lion comes out and ride the bike, you don’t think about it too hard you just go, ‘ok that’s crazy a lion is riding a bike,’ and you go home and enjoy the rest of your day. I don’t feed into the stuff at all at the end of the day it’s all entertainment to a certain degree.”

Kevin Hart is wishing his ex-wife and Katt Williams well as they prepare to hit the road together -- which is about the nicest thing he could say ... considering the team-up here.

We got the comedian out and about Tuesday in NYC, where we asked how he felt about the fact that Torrei Hart -- whom Kevin divorced in 2011 -- just announced the fact that she and Katt are going on a comedy tour together ... albeit, a really mini one.

ICYMI ... TH broke the news Monday on her IG, posting a pic with Katt and writing -- "#Charlotte #Orlando #Tampa, come see me live with my good friend @kattwilliams on the Dark Matters tour." The 3 dates they have lined up are January 27, Feb. 2 and Feb. 3.

It could certainly be taken as an icy move on Torrei's part ... y'know, 'cause of everything that Katt recently said about Kev on Shannon Sharpe's podcast -- including calling him a "plant" in the industry.

Kevin had already responded to what Katt said about a week ago -- suggesting KW get that hate out of his heart, while also indicating he wasn't sweating Katt's negative energy.

Ditto here in this interview with us ... Kev says he loves everyone, and wants all comedians to succeed -- even if it's his and his (maybe?) new foe. He also says he hopes this tour of theirs, specifically, goes great ... which, again, is pretty freaking surprising.

Then again, Kevin has proven himself a pretty sweet guy over time -- so perhaps not.

Kevin Hart ‘s ex-wife, Torrei , is speaking out after receiving public backlash. As The Shade Room previously reported, earlier this month, it was revealed that Torrei Hart would join Katt Williams on an upcoming comedy tour.

The move follows Williams recently calling her ex-husband an industry plant and criticizing his career.

According to TMZ , the outlet recently caught up with the ex-wife and comedian in Burbank, California. A reporter asked Hart why Williams “picked” her to join him on tour “out of all the comedians.”

“Why wouldn’t he? I mean, I’m funny as f**k — but no, I mean, that’s my boy. We’ve known each other for years, and it’s only right,” Hart explained. “I’ve opened up for Katt before. He’s given me plenty of opportunities [and] we’ve shot a movie together, and we’re close! I mean, we’re so close, Katt has watched my dog before.”

Hart explained that she and Williams are friends and “have known each other for twenty years.”

“This isn’t something that just happened,” Hart firmly added.

From there, the reporter asked Hart if going on tour with Williams would pull her comedic career out of the shadows of her ex-husband’s. Hart replied by explaining that it’s essentially her time to shine.

“I just feel like it’s my time — I’ve been doing the work for years, and now it’s been time,” she said. So yeah, definitely, it’s helping me emerge out of the shadows because a lot of people don’t know I’ve been doing comedy for almost 15 years. This isn’t new, I’ve been putting in the work… [and] I tell jokes anywhere, I don’t care. So yeah, this is helping me get out of the shadows, for sure.”

Kevin Hart’s Ex-Wife Also Spoke On His “Beef” With Katt Williams

Before the interaction concluded, Torrei Hart maintained that she has no “shade at all” for her ex-husband in her actions.

“I have no shade at all for Kevin — even the stuff that’s going on between him and Katt, that’s not my beef,” she explained. “That is not my beef!”

Ultimately, Hart explained that she has “beef with no one” and shared that she titled her tour “No Hart Feelings” to calm the concerns of anyone who thinks otherwise.

Here’s How Kevin Hart Reacted To His Ex-Wife’s Public Decision

As The Shade Room previously reported, Williams went viral earlier this month after sitting down with Shannon Sharpe for an almost three-hour interview.

During the appearance, Williams shared criticism for many of his fellow comedians but particularly referred to Kevin Hart as an “industry plant” with an inflated career.

At the time, Kevin Hart initially responded by taking to X , formerly known as Twitter.

“Gotta get that anger up outcha champ….It’s honestly sad,” he wrote.

A few days later, Hart appeared on ‘NBA Unplugged’ and added to his sentiments on Williams.

Then, on January 8, Torrei Hart took to social media to announce her upcoming tour with Williams. At the time, Hart also referred to Williams as her “good friend.”

Additionally, many social media users seemed to feel that Hart’s ex-wife was disloyal in her decision.

Soon after, TMZ caught up with Kevin Hart, who shared his feelings on his ex-wife’s upcoming business venture.

Is Kevin Hart funny?

He’s getting the mark twain prize for humor. that, and $4 billion at the box office, must mean something … right.

Kevin Hart insists he’s never written a joke.

Which is odd, because he’s this year’s recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Hart is one the most famous comedians alive, but comedy is a mere sliver of his portfolio. He’s a restaurateur, a rapper, an actor, a businessman, a brand wholly unto himself. He has built an empire from fast-casual restaurants, a tequila brand, a protein-shake line, a production company, more than $4 billion at the box office and sold-out arena shows — ostensibly by telling jokes.

Other comics crave comedic legacies. He craves generational wealth.

He hopes to be a billionaire by the time he turns 45. That’s in July.

“For me, it’s about becoming a mogul, owning my own projects and establishing myself as a funding producer,” Hart told Collider in 2013.

“For me, it’s about history,” he said on an episode of “Hot Ones” in 2016. “It’s about making sure that last name Hart means something when it’s all said and done.”

“For me, it’s building an empire,” he said to Marc Maron in 2017.

C omedy, it seems, is merely the empire’s cornerstone — and some other comedians think it’s sort of weak.

“I hear so many comics say, ‘Kevin Hart’s not funny,’” Donnell Rawlings said in February on the “My Expert Opinion” podcast, though he didn’t say if he agreed with them.

“I still don’t think yo ass funny,” Mike Epps wrote on Instagram in 2018, addressing Hart.

In January, on Shannon Sharpe’s YouTube show, Katt Williams suggested that Hart is a humorless, meritless commodity — what he called an industry “plant.” Williams’s comments went viral. Hart pushed back, telling Fox 5 D.C. that Williams takes entertainment too seriously. At the circus, Hart said, “when a lion comes out and rides a bike, you don’t think about it too hard. You just go, ‘Okay, that’s crazy.’”

Hart has built something massive. But does the last name Hart mean something in comedy? Does he consider his comedy to be impactful? Or is he a lion riding a bicycle?

We would like to ask Hart himself about all this. We spent months trying to schedule him. The Kennedy Center — which will host and confer the prize March 24 — tried helping. Maybe the interview would be in Qatar, where he had a show. Or maybe on a film set in Atlanta? Then maybe just over Zoom?

But Kevin Hart had other things to do. So we bought a $135 ticket for a bad seat in a North Charleston, S.C., concert hall, to see his “Brand New Material” tour, and listen for answers.

H art’s small, athletic frame — he’s 5-foot-4 — prowls the stage like an NBA player on the court. All 2,300 members of the audience have locked their phones in secure pouches. All eyes are on Hart.

It’s clear what he means when he says he doesn’t write jokes. Instead, he shouts his way through meandering stories.

They usually end with a laugh line that he’ll repeat several times — each one louder — while he pantomimes, say, his explosive defecation after eating a spicy Chick-fil-A sandwich, or his family’s eye-rolling when his nephew came out as gay.

“I think I speak for the whole family when I say: We know,” he says. “We know! WE KNOW!”

The audience devours it, laughing louder with each repetition.

H e was born in North Philadelphia in 1979. His father, largely absentee, was a drug addict who pulled stunts such as gifting his son a stolen dog, only to have its furious owners knocking at the door 15 minutes later. His mother was so strict that she didn’t allow him to have a bedroom door. Desperate to keep her son off the streets, she kept Hart busy with extracurriculars. He writes about all this in his 2017 memoir, “I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons.”

He credits his eventual success to both parents — his father for teaching him how not to act, and his mother for instilling discipline, though this last lesson took a while to take hold.

After dropping out of the Community College of Philadelphia before the end of the first semester, Hart took a job as a shoe salesman in a local sporting-goods store and found himself addicted to making a sale — a skill that came naturally to him, which he attributes to his charm.

A co-worker suggested he try stand-up at an amateur night at the Laff House, a comedy club in Philly. His first set was frenetic but scored a few cheers, he wrote. The second went better. He began winning stand-up competitions.

His addiction to selling shoes transformed into winning laughs. He quit the sales job to pursue comedy. His mother said she would support him for one year. If he didn’t make it, he would go back to college.

But he was confident.

He wrote, “I could do what I did best: be the fun, loud guy.”

F or nearly an hour in North Charleston, Hart is the fun, loud guy. He tells stories trafficking in broad, well-trod topics such as aging. He gets injured now but doesn’t know how! He’s scared to walk down stairs! In one bit, he pretends to pull his groin.

He spends an inordinate amount of time mocking Michael Jordan’s children.

The Style section

He says he takes penis-enlargement pills from the gas station. He performs so well in bed that his wife screams more than his name — she also bellows his Social Security number. Later, when his erection ebbs, she murmurs those same numbers in disappointment rather than glee.

Hart delights in trying to cross a line, repeatedly shouting, “That’s why I took your phones tonight!”

He asks about a medical emergency that occurred during his opener’s set. The punchline is he’s only pretending to care. He tells a story about his diabetic amputee family members trying to goad him into eating sweets, and it ends with him hobbling around stage like his one-footed uncle.

The audience roars.

S o: Is Kevin Hart funny?

Comics such as Keith Robinson, Patrice O’Neal and Dave Attell thought so. They helped him get his start in respected New York stand-up clubs. Media mogul Damon Dash thought so. He put him in the Roc-A-Fella-produced movie “Paper Soldiers” (2002) alongside Jay-Z, Charlie Murphy and Michael Rapaport. Judd Apatow thought so. He cast him in a few episodes of his Fox sitcom “Undeclared” with Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel, 23 years ago.

Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle are scheduled to toast him at the Kennedy Center.

The fish-out-of-water persona he honed in movies — such as “Ride Along,” “Get Hard” and several films with Dwayne Johnson — draws big box-office receipts.

His movie character — there is really only one — is an extension of his stand-up act: frenetic, self-deprecating yet overconfident, fast-talking and, most important, LOUD.

Funny is in the ear of the listener, but perhaps the proof is in the empire, cornerstone be damned. Hart has modeled underwear for Macy’s. He’s played in major poker tournaments. He co-created a TV show in 2013 called “Real Husbands of Hollywood.” He founded a production company that pumps out the schlocky comedies he appears in. He started a venture capital firm that invests in companies that make beds, energy drinks, snacks and cleaning products.

This “fusion between comedy and business, comedy and capitalism” is a modern phenomenon, according to stand-up historian Kliph Nesteroff, who wrote “ The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels and the History of American Comedy .” “These are things that George Burns and Jack Benny never did, or that Moms Mabley or Eddie Murphy ever did.”

Hart’s bio on X focuses on the effort: “My name is Kevin Hart and I WORK HARD!!! That pretty much sums me up!!! Everybody Wants To Be Famous But Nobody Wants To Do The Work.”

His mentor, Robinson, confirms this by phone. “He’s the hardest-working man in show business,” Robinson says. “The James Brown of comedy.”

H art’s empire seems impervious to threats. He cheated on his pregnant wife in 2017. No one seemed to care. In 2015 he said he would never play a gay character. No one really blinked.

In 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced he would host the 2019 Oscars. Almost immediately, Twitter users and journalists began sharing a slew of his old homophobic tweets and stand-up bits. The academy asked him to apologize. He refused, resigned the gig and then gave a non-apology on Twitter.

But controversy rolls off him because he never fully admits wrongdoing. Never earnestly apologizes. Instead, he talks about personal growth — he’s always evolving and growing — and complains about cancel culture.

A bit from his 2013 special “Let Me Explain” — about how his infidelity broke up his first marriage — captures the cycle: “Yes, people, I cheated. Am I ashamed of it? No, I’m not. Do I wish I could take it back? No, no I don’t. Let me tell you why. You can’t evolve as a man if you never make a mistake.”

“I’ve been canceled, what, three or four times?” he said to the Sunday Times, unbothered, in 2021. In the same interview he suggests that anyone who wants to cancel someone should “Shut the f--- up!”

Hart says that in high school, he dragged a bully across a football field by his face mask, ripped off his helmet and began punching him in the face, according to his memoir. Not long after, he sucker-punched another bully. “I would have thought that a fight would escalate things,” he wrote. “But the fact that it stopped the bullying taught me a lesson: Defend yourself at all times.”

On a 2022 episode of the podcast “SmartLess,” after Hart boasted that he had been drinking, co-host Jason Bateman asked him about his appearance on the entrepreneur reality show “Shark Tank.” Bateman wanted to know whether Hart was pitching or judging.

“What the f--- is that?” Hart yelled. Bateman asked again, and Hart yelled, louder, “I’m Kevin Hart, b----!”

“He’s got a certain vulnerability,” said Charleston resident Georgette “Cookie” Palasis, when asked before the show about her opinion of Hart. “He pulls at your heartstrings.”

One phrase came up repeatedly among fans in Charleston: He’s relatable . Who among us hasn’t, um, taken penis-enlargement pills from a gas station and then commanded his spouse to recite his Social Security number during sex?

But maybe we’re thinking too literally. What’s relatable isn’t the taking of the pills but the insecurity that leads to them. There is a deep, universal anxiety at the heart of Hart’s jokes. And there is a deep, universal anxiety in the way he talks about himself.

“I’m as talented as f---,” he felt the need to tell the Sunday Times.

He’s particularly fond of explaining how talented, often in defense of his funniness.

“The ‘He’s not funny’ slander is the best” began a tweetstorm in 2021, when Hart highlighted that his movies have made $4 billion in the box office and that three of his stand-up specials are among the top-10 highest grossing of all time.

“I have also turned my comedic talent into a place of business and branding and radio and other revenue streams,” he tweeted. “The hate/slander fuels me to do more.”

I s the Twain Prize about being funny? Is “fun” and “loud” close enough?

By declamation, the prize honors “an artist whose humor, much like the award’s namesake Mark Twain, has impacted American society.” Humor is subjective, but impact is a bit more measurable. One could reasonably argue that Lorne Michaels, the 2004 recipient, fathered generations of comedic talent through “Saturday Night Live,” or that Ellen DeGeneres, the 2012 recipient, used humor to change perceptions of gay people.

Deborah F. Rutter, the president of the Kennedy Center, praised Hart’s “iconic characters, inimitable physical comedy, and relatable narratives” — there’s “relatable” again — and his “lasting contributions to the comedic landscape.”

But Nesteroff, the stand-up historian, notes that Hart — and last year’s winner, Adam Sandler — are difficult to contextualize because they’re technically midcareer.

“Kevin Hart really belongs to one generation of show business,” Nesteroff says. “I don’t know if we’re there yet to see specific comedians or performers that have been influenced by Kevin Hart.”

Nesteroff thinks the Twain Prize celebrates not just Hart’s comedy but the empire he built on it.

“It almost feels like we’re honoring fame,” Nesteroff says.

Which, of course, is exactly what Hart is proud of.

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony will stream on Netflix on May 11.

Kevin Hart and Nick Cannon's prank war continues at D.C. gala with Eddie Murphy stunt

Highlights from the Kennedy Center's 25th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony honoring Hart, which will air on Netflix in May.

Kevin Hart receiving the esteemed Mark Twain Prize for American Humor didn't stop Nick Cannon from using the ceremony to continue his ongoing prank war with the comedian.

Hart was honored with the top prize at a Sunday gala at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., which featured speeches from other famous comedians like Jerry Seinfeld , Dave Chappelle , and Eddie Murphy — well, except that when the latter was announced, it turned out to be not the legendary Saturday Night Live alum, but the host of The Masked Singer introduced that way as a practical joke.

It was the latest stunt between the Celebrity Prank Wars cohosts, which previously included Hart sending the very fertile Cannon a vending machine of condoms; putting his cell phone number on a billboard, encouraging people to call for parenting advice; and recently went as far as Hart competing on The Masked Singer . Everyone in the crowd, including seemingly Hart, fell for Cannon's stunt, thinking Murphy, a past recipient of the award, was making an unannounced appearance.

In his speech, Cannon told Hart: "Every comedian is proud of you — except one or two cats," in reference to Katt Williams' recent callout of Hart. Cannon then joked that a few other notables were about to pop out, including Chris Rock , who, as it turned out, was not a prank. The Chris Rock Show  star called the intro the "funniest I’ve ever seen Nick Cannon."

A filmed version of the Kennedy Center's 25th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor honoring Kevin Hart will air May 11 on Netflix. Read on for more highlights.

Hart was ushered into the theater with style: Cannon's Masked Singer costar Robin Thicke serenaded the honoree with a cover of Peggy Lee’s "Fever" that segued into a pyrotechnic rendition of Nelly’s "Hot in Herre," easily one of the night’s highlights. 

As the event got underway, it became clear that the night was less a tribute to Hart’s iconic characters, classic movies, or satirical take on life and politics — which, one might consider standard fare for a prize that has also honored the likes of Murphy and George Carlin — than his commitment to positive thinking and hard work, and his groundbreaking ability to turn his comedy skills into a lucrative entrepreneurial brand. As outgoing board chairman David Rubenstein — who recently purchased the Baltimore Orioles — noted in his introduction, Hart is a "leader of a new generation of comics."

George Wallace, who started out in stand-up comedy as part of the New York City scene in the late ‘70s and once wrote for Redd Foxx, told EW on the red carpet: "Kevin is Kevin no matter what, he is going to be who he is no matter what age or era. Funny people are funny, they love what they do and making people happy. Redd Foxx would think: great comedians love comedy, no matter what you do. There is a different path for every comedian, we just love successful people."

There were several recurring themes in the speeches about Hart: his flakey communication skills, his joyful outlook on life, his tenacious work ethic, his height, and his ability to draw huge audiences. Past recipient Chappelle recognized that half a billion people have purchased tickets to watch Hart perform stand-up, and that does not even factor in the comedians' movies and shows.

Hart’s first comedy peer to honor him was Seinfeld, who gave a home run performance. "One of the most important things in show business is doing favors," Seinfeld joked about showing up for the event, before reflecting that there is not much Hart actually can do for him as he does not want to be in Jumanji ! Seinfeld established one of the night’s major motifs: Hart’s legacy is his business acumen and entrepreneurism, as well as his likability. 

Next up was Tiffany Haddish , who dubbed herself Hart’s "comedy sister" as she wore one of his hand-me-down jackets. Her conceit was Hart was a leprechaun – not because of his short stature, but his incredible luck. He is "magic," she said. Haddish knew Hart in the comedy club scene right as he started making money. Her presentation did not exactly crush, though she had a hilarious moment riffing off a hard-laughing member of the audience who she hopes may be a congressman (and, potentially, a future baby daddy). 

Jimmy Fallon treated the audience to an old school country song, focusing on Hart’s height and success. "So much talent, how is it legal/ We’d be heartbroken if he got carried off by an eagle," Fallon crooned. 

Curb Your Enthusiasm star JB Smoove shared about knowing Hart back at the Laugh House in Philadelphia and that he would get paged whenever someone noticed Hart was stealing one of his jokes. Indeed, his lighthearted yet barbed speech covered the ways Hart plagiarized Smoove’s career in various ways. For instance, he said before Hart launched the Plastic Cup Boyz, Smoove had a similar group involvingTupperware. His speech landed on a high note: a confession that Smoove wanted to air out his grievances at the Kennedy Center rather than Club Shay Shay, another reference to Katt Williams including Hart in his podcast interview disses.

Hart’s mentor Keith Robinson delivered a killer performance that was both hilarious and deeply moving. As a a two-time stroke survivor (“My New Years resolution: no more strokes!”), Robinson’s set began joking about the long time it took him to get on stage, and event organizers encouraging him to limit his remarks to four-minutes. “Kev, I love you – goodnight!” he quipped. After a brief stumble, Robinson recovered with a very funny ad-lib – throwing his cane at musician Adam Blackstone.

Robinson, who also met Hart at the Laugh House in Philadelphia, revealed the comic helped him as he was recovering from his stroke during COVID. "I’m going to make a call,” Robinson remembered Hart saying. He was moved before panicking: "To who?!"

On a lighter note, Rock joked that Hart “got that second wife happiness!” He reflected on meeting Hart during Death of a Funeral , saying he and Aziz Ansari are the only comedians who actually took his advice: find your own voice. Rock said Hart did, and 800 days later he was a bigger star than Rock, starring in movies with another Rock, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He also commented on Hart’s business smarts, joking this event was not for charity, but actually a paid Kevin Hart gig. In another funny moment, Rock said his favorite Kevin Hart movie was The Upside because he had to act like he had less money than Bryan Cranston. “Regular Denzel over there.”

Regina Hall , who's made a staggering eight movies with Hart discussed meeting up at a table read during Scary Movie 3 , and how his career has skyrocketed. As his "common life wife," she said she feels entitled to his tequila money, while also discussing his inconsistent communications, and tendency to steal jokes. “All lies,” she claimed, throwing in a penis joke for good measure. Hall tosses in a reference to Soul Plane , a movie she claims this largely white DC crowd does not know, let alone appreciate. 

Finally, Chappelle came on stage to Dead Prez’s “Hip Hop” and seemed a little nervous, saying it is strange to honor someone like Hart while he is still “active duty,” a reference to the fact Hart is among the youngest recipients of this honor. Chappelle noted Hart’s humble origins, his appreciation for his friend’s positive attitude, and the joy, grace, and kindness he brings to the world of comedy. Hart is a “powerful dreamer” who has inspired Chappelle to work harder. Before Hart, arenas were not considered the ideal setting for even big selling comedians, he said. It was an earnest and heartfelt speech that also included jokes about Seinfeld and Cannon – a nice touch, given Chappelle’s classic joke about the Wild N’ Out star on his Comedy Central show. 

After a bathroom break that gave Chappelle a chance to dance off stage and make a quick nod to Ashanti, who also was in attendance, Hart came to accept his prize. He name-checked everyone, excluding the salty Cannon and Smoove, summarizing his feelings as: “Success is nothing without the people who really know you.”

“It is a night of love… thank you for showing up,” Hart told the crowd. He admitted he sought to deliver a meaningful, impactful speech, and largely delivered. To God, and his mother, he credited for having a value of self. To his team, he thanked the financial consultants – his many partnerships and investments. On the emotional end of the scale, he fell in love with comedy and committed. “Life without a gamble is a weird thing… you don’t know the best version of you, truly.” He also paid loving tribute to his family, particularly his brother, Robert .

With tears streaming down his face, Hart finished by noting – from his fellow comedians like Chappelle, Rock, and Seinfeld, on down – this was the first night he truly felt his people and network had shown up, saluting “everyone that is part of the ecosystem.”
