5 Must-See Jurassic Park Locations in Kauai

5 Must-See Jurassic Park Locations in Kauai

In Adventure , Places by Makana Charters October 15, 2022 2 Comments

Everyone loves the Jurassic Park series. Over the years, the dinosaur world that has been so realistically portrayed on screen, has managed to awe, scare and cheer millions of people worldwide.

The franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. Through all these years, Kauai has been a consistent filming location for the series. The main reasons being the raw, undisturbed beauty of the island and the supportive infrastructure for filming.

As Patrick Crowley, one of the producers of Jurassic World, stated in an interview, they needed a green location to shoot the jungle portion and considering the infrastructure, it made a lot of sense to shoot the film in Kauai.

To celebrate the successful stint of one of our favourite movie franchises and to honor the grandeur of our island, we will be covering the 5 must-see Jurassic Park filming locations in Kauai in this blog post .

This will serve as a guide for your next Kauai visit and help you see those locations for real, without the dinosaurs of course.

1. The Amber Mine at Ho’opi’i Falls (Kapaa, East Kauai)

This location claims an important place in the storyline as this is where it all begins. In the first Jurassic Park movie, the Ho’opi’i falls area is shown as the Mano De Dios Amber Mine in Dominican Republic.

This is where Hammond’s team discovers a mosquito enclosed in amber whose DNA is later used for populating the Jurassic park with dinosaurs. Although the falls are not gushing in full splendor in the movie, they are much more beautiful in real and can be reached via a short hike through the scenic Ho’opi’i Falls Trail.

2. Raptor Egg Discovery at Allerton Garden ( Lawai, South Shore )

A National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kauai, Allerton Garden is well known for the hundreds of varieties of tropical plant life that are thriving here, amidst some ingenious and commendable landscape architecture.

The garden is also famous for the ‘Moreton Bay Figs’, commonly known as ‘The Jurassic Park Tree.’ These giant trees were featured in the 1993 Jurassic Park movie in the scene where Dr.Grant and the children discover the Raptor egg.

To this day, people, especially children, flock to the Allerton garden, with Jurassic Park T-Shirts on, to have a look at those trees and relive one of their favourite Jurassic Park moments.

Guided Tours of the Allerton Garden are available with prior reservation.

Kauai Hawaii Itinerary

3. Spotting the Dinosaur Herd at Jurassic Kahili Ranch (North Shore)

The 2800 acre wide ranch located in Kilauea, on the north-eastern shore of Kauai, has been featured in three Jurassic Park films, including the 2015 “Jurassic World.” The vast, expansive grassland, served as the perfect location to introduce the dinosaurs in the movie.

The scene in the first installment when Dr Grant and Ellie are absolutely mesmerized when they see a giant Brachiosaurus, is etched forever in the hearts of Jurassic Park Lovers.

The ranch recently started offering private tours for the public. Please visit their website for more info.

4. Helicopter Landing at Manawaiopuna Falls (Hanapepe Valley, Southern Kauai)

In the 1993 movie, remember the scene when the visitors first arrive on the island as the nostalgic Jurassic Park music runs in the background?

The waterfall in the background when the helicopter lands on the helipad is the Manawaiopuna Falls, colloquially known as Jurassic Park Falls.

As seen in the movie, the waterfall is deeply embedded inside the jungles of Hanapepe valley. The only access to the falls is via helicopter as the area is privately owned.

5. Napali Coast (Northwest Coast of Kauai)

In the Lost World, when the team approaches Isla Sorna via a vessel, we couldn’t help but awe at the magnitude of the magnificent Napali Coast . The towering cliffs that kiss the ocean and disappear deep into the lush Napali valley seemed as the perfect location to portray the fictional dinosaur island and blow the audience away.

It was the Honopu Valley that was featured in ‘The Lost World’, The Napali Coast was also used for filming the 1993 Jurassic Park and the 2015 Jurassic World movies.

While some may choose to see this iconic coastline from the air, we think the only way to feel immersed in it is to see it by boat. But this decision can be difficult with so many different boat tour operators offering their services.

Our advantage is that we (Makana Charters) are native Hawaiian owned tour operators, offering closest Port to Coast travel in ideal sized boats to navigate the depths of the Napali coast.

We will be honoured to have you onboard and to take you through what we humbly consider Kauai’s best Na Pali Coast tour .

Experience the stunning Napali Coast in the most enjoyable way. Book your Napali coast boat tours today!

5 Can’t-Miss Jurassic Park Locations in Kauai

Brittany Mendez

For more than 25 years, generations have been introduced to the fantastical and terrifying world of dinosaurs through Steven Spielberg’s iconic film franchise, Jurassic Park. Based on the Michael Crichton novel of the same name, 1993’s Jurassic Park took us to a fictional theme park where paleontologists and scientists recreated living, breathing dinosaurs. Guests mixed and mingled with a variety of dinosaurs, and, well, let’s just say it didn’t go quite as expected.

The series has expanded to include six films, with a seventh, Jurassic World Dominion, to be released in early 2022. The franchise has shattered box office records worldwide, gained fans around the globe, and made billions of dollars in profit.

While Jurassic Park looks like an entirely different world, much of it was filmed on location in Kauai. Each film has shot at least some scenes in Hawaii, and Kauai has more filming locations than any of the other islands.

If you’re a Jurassic Park fan planning on visiting Kauai, here are five locations you have to see:

Allerton Garden – Kapaa (East Side)

kauai tours jurassic park

While in Kapaa, all Jurassic Park fans must stop and visit Allerton Garden . Located within the National Tropical Botanical Garden, or NTBG, the garden is breathtakingly beautiful. The NTBG is a non-profit organization focused on studying and saving the world’s tropical plants. In fact, they’ve assembled the largest collection of native Hawaiian plant species in the world.

In Jurassic Park , the iconic scene where raptor eggs are discovered near the aptly dubbed “Jurassic Tree,” was filmed here in Allerton Garden. The trees, actually Moreton Bay Fig Trees, still stand today and are viewable by the public.

The Garden offers a variety of guided tours, including group tours, private tours, and sunset tours. Most, if not all of them, will pass this location, and some tour guides will even point out the exact tree used in the film.

Hanapepe Valley/Manawaiopuna Falls – (Southern Kauai)

kauai tours jurassic park

In the film, there is a scene where Dr. Hammond has assembled his crew of paleontologists and they are flying through a lush, beautiful valley in a helicopter. This was shot in the Hanapepe Valley , located in Southern Kauai. The only way to see this valley in person is via helicopter. Fortunately, there are several companies that offer helicopter tours of the area, so you can retrace the exact path of the Jurassic Park characters.

Located in the valley is the towering, majestic Manawaiopuna Falls . Beautiful in its own right, the waterfall is also familiar in the Jurassic Park universe. When the first helicopter full of guests touches down on the helipad at Jurassic Park Falls, it’s actually landing here. Some helicopter companies have permission to touch down on private property nearby, giving lucky fans an up close and personal view of the iconic waterfall.

Jurassic Kahili Ranch – Kilauea (North Shore)

Jurassic Kahili Ranch is a privately-owned, 2800-acre ranch located in Kilauea, on Kauai’s North Shore. Full of vibrant green pastures, impressive waterfalls, and clear blue ponds and streams, the area is visually stunning.

Fans may recognize this as the backdrop of the unforgettable moment when Ellie and Dr. Grant first see a Brachiosaurus in the first Jurassic Park film . They’ve just arrived on Isla Nubar and are hopeful and curious about what is about to unfold.

Jurassic Kahili Ranch is sometimes open to the public via a Hike & Explore package, but this is sporadic. If you’d like to see the grounds, your best bet is to call or email the ranch to get an update on their current visitor policy.

Hoopii Falls – Kapaa (East Side)

In Jurassic Park, Hoopii Falls stood in as the location of the fictional Mano de Dios amber mine. Although the mine is located in the Dominican Republic in the film, it was actually shot right here on Kauai.

One popular way to reach the falls is via a hiking trail. The trail is a 2.4 mile out and back, a moderate-difficulty path that cuts through the jungle and culminates at the waterfall. Although the always-busy trail is public, it traverses private property, so be sure not to stray from the path. Additionally, avoid swimming in or drinking the water. It contains toxic bacteria that makes it unsafe for consumption.

Pilaa Beach – (North Shore)

kauai tours jurassic park

This last one is a long shot, but if you do visit, you’ll be greeted with stunning views and unusual solitude on one of Kauai’s most remote beaches — Pilaa Beach . Those who have seen Jurassic Park III will recognize this beach as the location of the film’s final rescue scene.

Interestingly, the land surrounding the beach is owned by the Facebook tycoon, Mark Zuckerberg. We’ll caution you that this beach is exceedingly difficult to access, and the rudimentary path leading there can be treacherous for the untrained hiker. For those brave enough to try, there is an exceptionally steep and rocky path that winds its way down to the shore. If you do reach the bottom, you’ll be met with a small, beautiful beach with unbeatable oceanfront views. It’s so infrequently visited that you’re likely to be the only one there – a rare feat in Kauai.

There are tons of Jurassic Park filming locations scattered across Kauai, but these are a few that must be added to the list of every fan. Let us know which ones you enjoyed most!

Overall rating

It was such a fun adventure! It was raining for most of it and we got pretty muddy. If it’s raining when you go definitely buy or bring a poncho to cut down on the mud. There were parts of the trail that felt more advanc ... ed but they guided us on how to get through. The sites and greenery were absolutely stunning! The guides were super pleasant and supportive. The explained everything clearly and patiently. I felt safe and supported the whole time. Learned lots of cool things!

This was so much fun. Our guides Cousin Ryan and Merlin were amazing!! Very knowledgeable and informative! We learned so much about the ranch and Hawaii! Loved riding in the 4x4’s! Views were magnificent!!!

Fun in the mud!

Absolutely beautiful! Owen and David were great guides and full of information. I would highly recommend this.

Famous Hawaii Movie Tour®

Lights, camera … action! If you’re a film buff, this Kauaʻi movie day tour is especially for you. With its natural beauty and tropical landscapes, Kauaʻi has long been a sought-out destination for Hollywood. You’ll love recognizing the iconic locations and backdrops from all your favorite films. For the maximum experience, immerse yourself in movie clips aboard the tour minibus and see how filmmakers made the island of Kauaʻi translate onto the silver screen.

See where Harrison Ford and Anne Heche survived a crash landing in Six Days and Seven Nights. Relive the fate of those shipwrecked on Gilligan’s Island and feel just like a competitor in The Amazing Race. Check out the waterfall shown in the opening credits on Fantasy Island and remember, dead men tell no tales on Pirates of the Caribbean. Also don’t forget about a classic Jurassic Park tour.

Want more movie trivia? Check out our Hawaii Movie Tour ® Location Guide for more information about different movie locations in Kauaʻi.

Tour Highlights (* denotes stops made)

  • Wailua Falls (Kauaʻi)* – A 173-foot waterfall located near Lihue that feeds into the Wailua River. Most recognized in the opening credits for television show Fantasy Island, Wailua Falls has also made cameos in Dragonfly, Castaway Cowboy, The Amazing Race and Tropic Thunder.
  • Hanamāʻulu Bay* – The ancient birthplace of Kawelo, a member of Kauaʻi’s ruling family, the bay has made appearances in productions like Donovan’s Reef, Pagan Love Song, Six Days and Seven Nights and Voodoo Island.
  • ʻŌpaekaa Falls Lookout* – A beautiful and accessible waterfall on the island, this is where scenes from Donovan’s Reef, Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN and Seven Women from Hell  were filmed.
  • Kapaa Town – A beachside town where Jurassic Park was filmed. There’s something very nostalgic about a Jurassic Park tour.
  • ʻAliomanu – This picturesque, isolated beach was a perfect setting for Six Days Seven Nights and Voodoo Island.
  • Moloaʻa Beach* – A horseshoe-shaped beach on the northeast shore of Kauaʻi, you may recognize scenes from Gilligan’s Island and Castaway Cowboy.
  • Hanalei Pier* – A gathering place for the people of Hanalei seen in Miss Sadie Thompson, Wackiest Ship in the Army, South Pacific , and more.
  • Hanalei Valley – A valley of taro patches, one of the most photographed places on the island, and was filmed in Uncommon Valor.

Hanalei Valley

This was such a fantastic tour that we will probably do it again in the future!

Our tour guide was wonderful. She was full of fun-filled facts about the island, Hawaiian culture and of course, told us about all the movies and movie locations. By the end of the tour, we had learned a lot about not only about movie making on Kauaʻi, but a lot about the island itself. This tour is definitely worth doing.

We planned this tour even before leaving the mainland as we expected it to be the highlight of our trip. It was a fun and relaxing way to see Kauaʻi as we watched film clips that were timed to match the arrival at various points of interest. Now that we are home, we are watching the movies again with our new memories!

Jurassic Park Gate Kauai

Jurassic Park Gate Kauai

On Instagram and elsewhere, Kauai is often referred to as Jurassic Park, and there’s good reason for that. The primeval island, the oldest of the Hawaiian islands, is a favorite filming location for the Jurassic Park movie franchise. One of the most iconic images of the film series is the Jurassic Park Gate, which was constructed and filmed in the rugged interior of Kauai.

The view remains the same, but all that’s left of the gate are the cement posts. The location is on public land in the Waikoko Forest near the island’s “Blue Hole,” the mystical center of Kauai and the source of the Wailua River. For tourists, the location is not exactly easy to find or get to, but with the information below you should be able to visit this landmark site.

The Jurassic Park Gate is about 3.5 miles from the Keahua Arboretum and close to the Kuilau Ridge Trail . The road to the Keahua Arboretum is paved, but becomes a dirt road after the bridge at the arboretum.

After the Keahua Arboretum, the road becomes the Waikoko Forest Management Road. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for this part of your trip to the gate. Four-wheel-drive vehicles, including Jeep Wranglers, can be rented at the Lihue Airport. (Please note that car rental companies in Hawaii do not allow off road use of their vehicles, so proceed at your own risk when using a rental vehicle.)

The road is somewhat maintained, but heavy rains and a lack of maintenance have taken their toll in the last couple of years. Potholes that were once annoying or troublesome are now downright frightening, even for Jeep Wranglers. A safer way to reach the Jurassic Park Gate is to hike the road. (This hike even has a name – The Jungle Hike – if going by foot.)

After the arboretum, you will soon see the trailhead for the Powerline Trail on your right (at about 0.1 miles from the arboretum).

At about 0.5 miles from the arboretum you will see a spillway. Do not cross the spillway by foot or vehicle if the waters are too strong. If in doubt, wait to see how other vehicles, if any, fare while crossing the spillway.

Continue on the road past the arboretum for 1.5 miles. You will see a fork in the road. Take the left road. After the fork, continue for another 1.25 miles. You should see a yellow gate that is open.

At this point, the road becomes narrower and we recommend that you park your vehicle and walk past the yellow gate and down the road another .25 miles where you will find the Jurassic Park Gate location. There are two cement posts at the location, as well as another yellow gate that is usually open.

  • While potholes are a major concern on the road to the Jurassic Park Gate, low-hanging branches should also be a concern for drivers.
  • Driving a vehicle to near the gate (when the road is repaired) is the preferred way, in our opinion, to get to the location. However, some people prefer to hike the 3.5 miles (7 miles round trip) from the Keahua Arboretum.
  • From what we have seen, an even better way to the gate location is by dirt bike if you have one. A mountain bike might also work, but the road is wet and muddy.
  • Due to flash floods, it’s possible that you could be trapped on the far side of the streams at the spillways, leaving you with no way to get back until the waters subside. This has happened to more than a few people. Bring extra water and food in case this happens to you.
  • There is generally no phone service in this area, so plan accordingly.
  • If at any time you are not sure which fork in the road to take, take the more well-traveled road.
  • At approximately 0.5 miles past the spillway there is an underused road that cuts back to the left. There is a powerline tower on the right side of the road. Do not take this road. Keep going on the main road as it veers slightly to the right.

Update: Loop Road has reopened as of May 17th, 2021 reports the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). Repair efforts are continuing and only vehicles with 4-wheel-drive capabilities and high clearance should access the road at this time, reports DLNR.

The North fork low-water crossing may be usable in dry conditions, but construction of a new low-water crossing will still be required. Users should not attempt this low-water crossing during heavy rainfall events as it can become extremely hazardous.

Despite the reopening, the road has not been fully repaired and we still recommend parking at the Keahua Arboretum and hiking to the Jurassic Park Gate. Loop Road, officially the Wailua Forest Management Road, had been closed following flood damage in 2018.

When you come to this fork in the road, go left.

Jurassic Park Gate

We recommend that you park your vehicle when you see this gate as the road becomes narrower, though off-road vehicles frequently proceed past this point. You are getting close to the gate. Walk past the gate and continue up the road for about a quarter of a mile.

VISIT 7 OF THE JURASSIC PARK FILMING LOCATIONS

a canyon with a mountain in the background

Allerton Garden, The Raptor Egg Discovery – Kapaa (East Kauai)

The Allerton Garden is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Kauai. It was used as a filming location for Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The garden is full of beautiful plants and flowers, and it’s also home to a number of waterfalls.

It’s in a National Tropical Botanical Garden, which houses the largest collection of native Hawaiian plant species in the world. You can also take a few different tours, all of which will pass by the film locations.

Manawaiopuna Falls, The Dramatic Helicopter Landing  – Hanapepe Valley (South Kauai)

The helicopter landing scene in “Jurassic Park” at Manawaiopuna Falls, nestled in the breathtaking Hanapepe Valley of Southern Kauai, is a cinematic masterpiece. As the characters set foot on the mysterious Isla Nublar, the helicopter’s descent into the lush valley, with the towering 400-foot waterfall as its backdrop, creates a captivating and unforgettable moment.

The choice of this remote location perfectly conveys the untouched, prehistoric world where dinosaurs roam freely, and the rugged landscapes surrounding the falls add an authentic layer to the film.

Filming at Manawaiopuna Falls came with its challenges, as it’s not easily accessible by conventional means. The crew’s reliance on helicopters for transportation added to the realism of the film, mirroring the characters’ journey.

This scene showcases not only the cinematic excellence of “Jurassic Park” but also the raw beauty of Kauai, forever intertwining the allure of Hollywood with the enchantment of Hawaiian wilderness. Manawaiopuna Falls’ contribution to the film’s narrative and its lasting impact on audiences worldwide exemplify the power of choosing the perfect filming location.

Hoopii Falls, The Amber Mine – Kapaa (East Kauai)

Hoopii Falls is another popular spot for tourists on Kauai. The falls are located in the Wailua River State Park, and they were used as a filming location for Jurassic Park. The falls are about 30 feet tall, and they offer a stunning view of the Wailua River.

They are the fictional “Mano de Dios” amber mine location in Jurassic Park. It can be reached through some light hiking. The trail does follow private property so be sure to stay on the trail.

Pilaa Beach – (North Side)

Pilaa Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand beach located on the north side of Kauai. The beach was used as a filming location for Jurassic Park, and it’s also a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing.

This was a film location for Jurassic Park 3. It’s very hard to access the beach and can be treacherous for inexperienced hikers. Do some further research and prepare for a challenging hike.

Jurassic Kahili Ranch, Spotting The Dinosaur Herd – Kilauea (North Side)

The Jurassic Kahili Ranch is a private ranch located on the north side of Kauai. The ranch was used as a filming location for Jurassic Park, and it’s also a popular spot for hiking and horseback riding.

This place is not always open for public use, but is sometimes available for a hike and explore package. Be sure to call or email the ranch if you are interested in seeing these sites.

Waita Reservoir – Koloa (West Kauai)

If you’re looking for a 2-in-1 adventure, be sure to check out the Waita Reservoir with Kauai ATV! The Waita Reservoir gives you stunning views of the Black Mountain Range and Mt. Hapu all while going on a thrilling off-roading adventure.

You can learn more about the different sights to see and experience.

The Na Pali Coast – Northwest Kauai Shoreline

In “The Lost World,” as the team set out for Isla Sorna by boat, we found ourselves in complete awe of the breathtaking grandeur of the Napali Coast.

The towering cliffs, gracefully meeting the ocean’s embrace and then extending far into the lush Napali valley, presented an absolutely stunning backdrop that perfectly captured the essence of the fictional dinosaur island and left a profound impression on the audience.

The Honopu Valley took center stage in “The Lost World,” but it’s worth noting that the Napali Coast had its share of the cinematic spotlight.

This dramatic coastal landscape not only served as a backdrop for the 1993 classic “Jurassic Park” but also played a role in the 2015 blockbuster “Jurassic World.” The enduring appeal of this natural wonder continues to enthrall both filmmakers and nature enthusiasts alike.

We organized that tour from Australia well ahead of time, planning to visit Zvenigorod with big group of extended family and friends with teens as part of our New Year trip to Moscow. The communication with Anton, our guide, was excellent during the time since booking till the excursion day. The actual day was organized very good, taken into account mixed group of adults, born in USSR and kids, born in Australia. Anton organized our activities to be suitable for all of us. As adults, we were enjoyed country side during winter and Monastery's quietness and ability to jump to the cold "holy" water at one of the oldest Monasteries of Russia - Savva Storoghevskiy Man Monastery. That was the most amazing and nearly magical experience! Kids were enjoyed of snow and treats Anton provide for us, including buisquits and Sbiten'. We also visited very interesting Museum of Russian desserts and learn a lot about ancient russian sweets; have a look on our past in the Museum of USSR and bought some yammie things to enjoy later. In general we all agree that our tour to Zvenigorod with Anton was enjoyable and educational; well organized and unforgettable. We wish we would have more time there! We would recommend such trip to everyone wishing to see Russia's country side. Read more Written January 17, 2020

Anton managed to book us a table for lunch with delicious local food and he helped us with recommendations for dinner (booked is a table as well). Brilliant job, Moscow with locals! City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

kauai tours jurassic park

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

kauai tours jurassic park

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

kauai tours jurassic park

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

kauai tours jurassic park

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

kauai tours jurassic park

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
