This Kid-Carrying Backpack Totally Replaced Our Stroller

Part child carrier, part backpack, the versatile Kelty Journey 2.0 has made kid-hauling so much simpler.

I hate strollers . They’re a pain to haul around. They’re inefficient to store. And every time the wheels get clogged with mud or snow my temper flares like a UFC fighter at a press conference. My two toddlers, meanwhile, hate walking . When we’re out and about, they last all of four minutes before demanding to be held or carried. It makes traveling on foot with them a chore, both physically and mentally, and it’s not uncommon for either their whining or my temper to derail a day’s activities. Naturally, I needed to find an alternative method of toddler transportation if we were ever going to leave the house again.

Luckily, some friends lent us their Kelty Journey 2.0 child carriers for a vacation, and we happily gave them a try. Lightweight and cleverly-designed, the kid-carrier-meets-storage-backpack turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. It was surprisingly comfortable for both driver and passenger with a padded seat and shoulder straps, and, despite my standing almost a foot taller than her, my wife and I had little problem switching back and forth. Within a day of returning home from our trip, we ordered two of our own. And while they weren’t necessarily cheap at $260 a pop, they were an easy purchase to justify considering they were taking the place of a stroller. Problem solved.

Designed to tote kids 16 to 40lbs, the all-in-one travel pack features a sun hood, lift handles, and a kickstand. All nice for sure, but what really puts it over the top is the water bladder for staying hydrated when I’m moving around a lot. That and the fact that carrying diapers, wipes, food, or clothes no longer necessitates twelve bags ⏤ the Kelty has storage space on the front, back, underneath, and sides.

Even better for parents living in smaller apartments or condos, as we do, it stores quite resourcefully. Although, to be honest, I keep the Kelty in my car at all times so as never to leave home without it. And that’s because we don’t use it for just traveling, hiking, or camping, as many do, but also for simply going out to shop, playing at the park, or walking around the block. Even if my daughters say they want to run around, I usually still bring it along as a useful storage tote to keep my arms free. Plus, you never know when they’re going to change their mind and want a ride.

In fact, my kids love riding in it as much as their nerdy, operationally-focused dad loves the all-encompassing functionality it provides. It’s even improved my exercise routine. On boring days, my wife and I run up and down our hallway with a kid in each pack ⏤ we’re having ostrich races, of course.

activity that will affect your balance.<br />

• DO NOT bend at the waist when using the carrier. Bend at the knees<br />

• DO check to assure all buckles snaps, straps, and adjustments are secure<br />

before each use.<br />

• DO check the condition of carrier before each use.<br />

• DO NOT use the carrier if the frame, fabric, straps or buckles are damaged.<br />

• DO NOT use the carrier if the carrier is in any way damaged or defective.<br />

AUTOMATIC KICKSTAND MEANT ONLY AS AN<br />

AID IN PUTTING ON/REMOVING CARRIER.<br />

The kickstand is not meant to support the carrier with a child in it. For<br />

this reason:<br />

• DO NOT use the carrier as a car seat, child seat, or high chair. To use<br />

it this way could lead to tip-over of carrier and injury to your child.<br />

• DO set the carrier on the floor, or firm, level ground to prevent tip-over.<br />

• DO NOT use carrier if kickstand does not automatically release or<br />

retract. Call <strong>Kelty</strong> Customer Support staff; toll free at 866-349-7225<br />

(866-FIX-PACK).<br />

Please note:<br />

• Tighten shoulder straps to retract kickstand during hiking/walking.<br />

• Loosen shoulder straps to release kickstand when taking carrier off.<br />

• DO make sure that the webbing that closes the kickstand is not kinked<br />

or twisted and that it can move smoothly through the pivot loop attached<br />

to the frame.<br />

• Do not use bleach or liquid detergent.

CARRIER ADJUSTMENT<br />

TENSION STRAPS<br />

To assure proper fit and function, the tension straps<br />

(Fig 1, A) must be tightened before use. There are<br />

two tension straps located behind the<br />

backpanel/adult shoulder straps. The tension straps<br />

are labeled “Please tighten before using.”<br />

A. Tension straps must be tightened to minimize<br />

cockpit frame movement.<br />

B. Open the cockpit area by spreading the front<br />

cockpit frame away from the cockpit backrest.<br />

Reaching under the cockpit, grasp the end of<br />

the tension strap, pull down to tighten (Fig. 1).<br />

C. Repeat step A for opposite side.<br />

ADULT BACKPACK FITTING<br />

A. The torso length on your carrier can be adjusted by<br />

using the pull cord on the waist belt, (Fig. 2).<br />

B. Loosen the shoulder straps, waist belt and unbuckle<br />

the sternum strap.<br />

C. Put the carrier on by slipping arms through shoulder<br />

straps. Buckle waistbelt and adjust up or down so .<br />

center of buckle lies over navel. Tighten waistbelt by<br />

pulling forward on the webbing.<br />

D. Tighten the shoulder straps by pulling down on the<br />

shoulder strap webbing.<br />

E. If the shoulder straps do not fit properly adjust the<br />

belt by pulling on the adjustment cord<br />

(in Fig. 2) and slide the belt up or down to<br />

the desired location. Release the adjustment tab.<br />

Make sure the backpanel is properly engaged by<br />

pushing up and down on the backpanel.<br />

F. When fitting is complete, remove carrier.<br />

CHILD’S COCKPIT ADJUSTMENT<br />

DO read all safety<br />

Before starting, make sure the <strong>Child</strong>’s<br />

Shoulder Harness (Fig. 3, A) is unbuckled<br />

and the yellow leg straps (Fig. 3, B), located<br />

on the side of the cockpit, are unbuckled.<br />

A. Place the carrier on the floor, or firm, level ground.<br />

B. Make sure the side-release buckles attached to the silver webbing on the<br />

child’s shoulder harness are unbuckled (Fig. 4, A).<br />

C. Adjust the cockpit seat height by attaching the two snap-hooks to the<br />

desired steel rings at the front of cockpit (Fig. 4, B). There are three<br />

sets of steel rings for seat height adjustment. To raise the seat height,<br />

attach to the upper seat rings. To lower, attach to the lower rings.<br />

D. With kickstand fully released and the carrier still on the floor or<br />

firm, level ground, place child into cockpit. Make sure both legs go<br />

through leg openings (Fig. 5 and Fig. 6).<br />

E. Place child’s shoulder harness over child’s shoulders.<br />

F. Attach the side-release buckles, sewn to the child’s shoulder harness (see Fig. 4,<br />

A) to the mating buckles on the silver webbing sewn to the child’s chest pad.<br />

G. The child’s shoulder harness can be adjusted up or down by sliding it on the<br />

webbing at the back of the child’s seat (Fig. 7). Adjust the harness so the<br />

padded section lies smoothly over the child’s shoulders.<br />

H. Adjust the leg straps so they fit comfortably over the child’s legs by tightening<br />

or loosening the yellow leg strap webbing on the side of the cockpit (Fig. 8).<br />

Make sure the leg straps are not binding or pinching the child’s legs.<br />

TAKING THE CARRIER OFF<br />

• DO NOT use the carrier while skating, biking or engaging in any activity that<br />

will affect your balance.<br />

• DO NOT bend at the waist when using the carrier. Bend at the knees to avoid<br />

pitching the child forward.<br />

Before putting carrier on, make sure the cockpit has been adjusted<br />

correctly and that both buckles on the child’s shoulder harness are<br />

properly fastened.<br />

Before putting the carrier on or taking it off, look around you to be sure<br />

there is no obstacle nearby that the child could strike or the<br />

carrier could catch on. DO NOT shake or jar the child unnecessarily.<br />

DO lift and lower the carrier gently.<br />

PUTTING THE CARRIER ON<br />

Make sure the adult backpack shoulder straps are loose and the waistbelt and<br />

sternum strap are unbuckled.<br />

A. With feet approximately shoulder-width apart and knees bent, grasp both<br />

handles (located at the front and rear of the cockpit) firmly and lift the<br />

carrier to your knee, resting the front of the lower frame on your thigh.<br />

B. While still grasping the front handle with one hand, slip your other arm under<br />

and through the shoulder strap. Lift the carrier off your knee and onto your shoulder.<br />

C. Carefully release the front handle and slip carrier onto the other shoulder.<br />

D. Buckle waistbelt and tighten.<br />

E. Tighten shoulder straps and buckle sternum strap.<br />

A. Loosen shoulder straps; make sure kickstand releases and moves to the<br />

outward position.<br />

B. Unbuckle waistbelt and sternum strap.<br />

C. With feet approximately shoulder-width apart and knees bent, remove one<br />

arm from shoulder strap and grasp front handle (behind head).<br />

D. While still grasping front handle, rotate your body toward the carrier,<br />

allowing the front of the lower frame to rest on your thigh.<br />

E. Remove other arm from shoulder strap and grasp rear handle.<br />

F. Carefully lower carrier to the floor, or firm, level ground.

your package to <strong>Kelty</strong> are your responsibility. Please be sure to insure any shipment as<br />

<strong>Kelty</strong> cannot be responsible for uninsured packages. We require that all products returned for<br />

warranty and repair be properly cleaned. If after inspection we determine that the product<br />

Although both backpacks rate very high for the comfort section, the Elite model comes out a few points ahead.

Adult Comfort Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

Although Kelty is known for making high quality backpacks, and both of these child carrier backpacks fall into that category, the Elite model wins in adult comfort. 

The PerfectFIT base model comes with a single lower padded lumbar, while the Elite model has perforated, padded mesh that runs continuously across the entire back panel section.  This helps keep you cool and ensures a comfortable experience for long days on the trail or exploring around town.

Fit Adjustability Winner: Tie

Both the PerfectFIT Elite and PerfectFIT models are constructed utilizing the Kelty PerfectFIT suspension system.  This system allows you to adjust the pack to fit a wide range of torso sizes, ranging from 15.5 inches to 21 inches.  For more info on how to properly fit a backpack, have a look at this helpful REI article .

Once you have the pack on your back, you simply pull down on the two straps by your hips.  This pulls the entire should strap apparatus downward, ensuring you get a perfect fit every time.  We like this feature, as it allows you to make quick, on the fly adjustments.  This specifically comes in handy when you hand off the pack from one person to another with a different body size.

Child Comfort Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

Both PerfectFIT Elite and PerfectFIT models are built with pretty much the same child comfort features. 

We love Kelty’s extra wide child seat.  It has a unique design that allows your child to find a natural sitting position, keeping them comfortable for quick trips around town, or long day hikes. 

The child cockpit on both packs is well padded, and utilizes a soft felt like material.  This makes for a comfortable experience when it comes to napping.

Lastly, both packs include adjustable foot stirrups.  These are critical when the child is young, but it is a must when they get 18 months plus.  Having a spot for the child to securely place their feet helps maintain good circulation and also ensures they comfortable for hours on end. 

The only real difference in child comfort is the sunshade that is included with the Elite model.  More on this later.

Overall Safety Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

Better safety features, Kelty Journey Elite or Kelty Journey?

Although both packs get a perfect 10/10 for child safety, the Elite model scores higher in the overall safety category due to the included sunshade.  A sunshade is critical on a baby backpack carrier.

Child Safety Winner: Tie

Both of these packs get tops marks for child safety.

Along with the well padded child cockpit mentioned above, the lightweight aluminum frame provides a sturdy base from which the rest of the pack is built.  Upon picking up the packs, you can tell that the entire structure is very rigid, providing a secure base to build from.

However, the best child safety feature on these Kelty child carrier backpacks is the five point harness and the extra wide child waistbelt.  Whereas most child waistbelts are fairly thin and just clip the child in place, the Kelty designed wasitbelt is much wider and wraps around the upper torso of the child, securely locking them in place.

We love this design as it really limits how much your child can squirm around.  This is a really good thing, as it keeps them more centralized in the pack, and minimizes how much the weight shifts around, which can make it difficult for the adult carrying the heavy load.

Overall, it is clear that Kelty had child safety in mind when they designed these two child carrier backpacks.

Sun Protection Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

This one isn’t even close.

The PerfectFIT Elite model comes with a built in sunshade.  The PerfectFIT base model does not come with a sunshade.  However, you can buy the sunshade separately for ~$35.

A sunshade is a critical component for any child carrier backpack, therefore, the Elite model clearly wins in the section.

However, despite the built in shade on the Elite model, we still believe some sunshade improvements could be made to provide better sun protection for the child.

Have a look at the Osprey Poco or Osprey Poco Plus for the best designed sunshade on the market.

Nap Effectiveness Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

Similar to the sunshade section above, this one is also easy.

Although your child can lean forward and easily nap in either backpack, the built in sunshade on the Elite model makes for a much better experience.  Children naturally get warm when napping, and without a shade, they get downright hot.  When they get hot they wake up or don’t get the recuperative rest everyone is hoping for.

If you decide to go with the PerfectFIT, we definitely recommend going ahead and purchasing the separate sunshade.  And in that case, if you are spending the extra money on the sun shade, you might as well just buy the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature  (the third Kelty option), which typically sells for $30-$40 more than the base PerfectFIT model but comes with a built in sunshade AND has significantly better storage options.

The Elite model once again comes out on top in our final rating section.

Gear Storage Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

When evaluating the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite vs. Kelty Journey PerfectFIT, the main thing to consider is gear storage.  The  PerfectFIT Elite is loaded with storage options, while the PerfectFIT has only a single, large zippered storage pocket. 

Although Kelty states that both packs have 26 L of gear storage capacity, we find that hard to believe.  The base PerfectFIT lacks a larger rear lower storage compartment. 

Below we outline the differences in storage between the two models.

• The PerfectFIT Elite has an internal storage compartment for a hydration bladder, the PerfectFIT does not.
• The Elite model has two medium sized mesh stuff pockets built into the side of the pack, the PerfectFIT does not.
• The Elite has two rear upper zippered storage compartments while the PerfectFIT has a single large upper rear storage compartment.
• The Kelty Elite model has a rear lower storage compartment, the PerfectFIT has no lower storage at all.
• The Elite model has zippered hipbelt pockets on both sides while the PerfectFIT has small mesh stuff pockets on both sides of the hipbelt.

If you are looking for a pack to take around town for shopping, the PerfectFIT base model will work great.  However, if you are looking for a pack to take out on the trail or exploring a new city while traveling, the extra storage on the Elite model is a must.

Extra Features Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

Other than the significantly better storage options on the Elite model, the Elite model also has six sturdy grab handles vs only two on the base PerfectFIT.  These extra grab handles are quite nice when putting on a heavy pack by yourself, and even more critical when taking the pack off. 

The extra compartment for a hydration bladder is also critical when deciding between these two models.  The base PerfectFIT model doesn’t really have a good spot for a full sized water bottle.  I suppose you could put a water bottle in the larger rear compartment, but you would need to take the pack off every time you wanted a drink.

Kelty doesn’t offer a rain cover for either model, which is a bit of a bummer, as it can really come in handy during storms, windy or cold conditions.  

Both Osprey and Thule child carrier backpacks have a rain covers that are sold separately.  This isn’t a must have, but close to it. ( Opsrey Rain Cover and Thule Rain Cover )

Durability Winner: Tie

As expected with Kelty products, they are built to last.  Both packs are constructed utilizing 70D Poly and 140D Nylon blend.  When you pick up this product, you know durability won’t be an issue.  Both packs come with Kelty’s limited lifetime warranty.

Value Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

Although the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite typically sells for $50-$70 more, we believe the Elite model provides a much better value, given all of the extra features that come along with it.  The built-in sunshade alone provides roughly $35 of value.  Combine that the with extra comfort features and significantly better gear storage options, the Elite model wins in the value category.

Overall Winner: Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite

In our opinion, the PerfectFIT Elite model wins by a landslide.  Extra storage, built in sunshade, a more comfortable adult back panel, and a hydration bladder compartment all make the Elite the best option.

However, if you are in the market for a bare bones child carrier backpack, the PerfectFIT base model might be right for you.  If you primarily plan to use the pack around town or for quick shopping trips, the PerfectFIT might be the better option.  However, if you plan to take longer day trips or spend longer periods of time hiking trails, the Elite model with more storage and a sunshade would be the best choice.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Kelty, based out of Boulder, Colorado, has been manufacturing outdoor products since 1952. Their claim to fame is that they were the first company to introduce baby backpacks in 1992, and they have worked hard to maintain their reputation in the field. Today, they are one of the most easily recognizable brands out there.

The Kelty Junction 2.0 is a well-constructed, aluminum-framed backpack, with impressive storage considering its smaller frame. It is a fully functioning backpack that can handle babies up to 30 pounds. It's foot stabilizer makes for safe loading and unloading, although our reviewers did find it a bit awkward. As with it's big brother, the Kelty Journey 2.0 , the bright yellow adjustment straps help you to be sure that baby is safe and secure once inside the cockpit.

Performance Comparison

Parent comfort.

The redirected strap on the waist belt, a feature we appreciated on the larger Kelty Journey 2.0 , is also present on the Junction. For additional comfort, the sternum strap was easily adjustable, and could slide up and down with ease.

For the smallest backpack in the bunch, the Junction packs quite a punch in the storage department. Reviewers on Amazon even raved about how it could double as a child carrier and a diaper bag. And even though there was no hydration reservoir, we didn't feel that one was necessary, as this backpack wouldn't be one you would take on an extended hike. Kelty was thoughtful enough, however, to add a water bottle holder on the waist belt, which we thought was perfect. Being from the same family as the Kelty Journey 2.0 , we weren't surprised to learn that the Junction also had absolutely nowhere to store the sunshade (which wasn't included with the backpack, anyway). That being said, our final score for Storage was 7 of 10.

Child Comfort

Considering padding, support, and footrests for baby, this pack earned a 5 of 10 in child comfort. Although the cockpit's padding was sufficient, there were no footrests for baby, and no side supports for baby's head. This lack of head and neck support proved to be a challenge once baby fell asleep.

Ease of Use

Weighing in at 4lbs 13oz, this backpack was the lightest of all its competitors. It earned a 7 of 10 for Ease of Use. Although the weight of the backpack itself was never an issue, we still had a harder time loading and unloading baby due to the small frame, awkward foot stabilizer, and lack of kickstand. We do understand, however, that these features are what make the pack lightweight to begin with, so it's really a give-and-take situation. Some users may prefer a smaller, more compact backpack in lieu of ease-of-use, while others prefer to sacrifice size for easy loading and unloading.

In our testing, the sunshade was particularly awkward to deal with, and impossible to store when not in use. Additionally, when attached to the backpack, it blocks quite a bit of baby's view, which some babies may not appreciate.

We did however, really appreciate the five-point harness and we believe succeded in keeping baby safe and secure while using the pack. Additionally, the cockpit provided an ergonomically-correct seat that kept baby in a comfortable position.

Best Applications

With it's small size and lack of 'cozy space' in baby's cockpit, this backpack is good for exactly what Kelty claims it is good for, "running around town hands-free, or hitting the trail for an afternoon hike." It's a quality backpack that can hold not only baby while doing errands, but all of baby's necessities.

At $190, this Kelty was priced middle-of-the-road when compared to other their other versions, and was the second most affordable one on our list. However, it didn't offer the same heftiness or accessories and features that other backpacks offered, which is something to keep in mind.
