The construction of the Observatory was completed in time to view the Transit on 3rd June, 1769. The Observatory's telescope cupola is the oldest of its type anywhere in the World. The Observatory was thereafter used regularly by the King for various purposes including providing a school house for the education of the royal children.

unfortunately, the London Council are undertaking major road works at the roundabout on the A316 close to Sainsbury. This adds up to 2 hours to journey times. Visitors are advised to travel by train and then walk or taxi to the King's Observatory. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at The King's Observatory.

The King's Observatory is today a private home, having been lavishly restored by the Scottish born, Hong Kong based businessman, Robbie Brothers a few years ago. He also occasionally opens the building to the public to see inside at both the restoration and to climb up to the telescope dome on top — and the next tour dates have been announced.

Tours started a couple of years ago, and this is the third time the owners have opened up what is now a private home to visitors.
