What our customers say about us

Great service, worth the price

My friend and I wanted to do a short trek because we’re a bit out of shape so Ramesh suggested the Ghandruk loop and we were not disappointed. It was just the right amount of physical activity. The views were wonderful and the lodges clean and each of them offered good food and hot water. The villages were authentic and small. Our guide (Sabin) was amazing. He told us everything we asked about Nepal and the mountains and was very helpful when on the last day my friend got sick. He also had many recommendations for what to do in Pokhara. I definitely recommend this trekking agency.

Fantastic trip!

Went to Nepal for a few days on the way back to the UAE from India. Weren’t sure what to do as we only had a few days but we wanted to see a lot of different areas. My friend got in touch with this company and I have to say they were absolutely amazing. Looked after my friends and I so well and for a reasonable price. Got to see all over Nepal and even had our own personalised driver. Ramesh was also so friendly and made sure we felt so welcome. If you are looking for a guide for Nepal I would highly recommend this company.

Nepal is home to many of the world’s largest mountain peaks and best trekking trails in the world . But don’t think you have to train for months or conquer high altitudes to enjoy Nepal’s mountains – there are plenty of treks to suit any fitness level. The Ghandruk trek is a perfect example!

The Ghandruk trek is the perfect option for anyone looking for a short trek in Nepal, with no difficult ascends/descends. This short but sweet trek takes three to four days, bringing you into the foothills of the Himalayas.

ghandruk trek views

I came to Nepal with the intention of conquering the Everest Base Camp trek, but food poisoning got the best of me (thanks to India), and unfortunately, that wasn’t in the cards. Thankfully, I was still able to see some of Nepal’s incredible landscapes on the three days Ghandruk Trek.

What is the Ghandruk Trek?

The Ghandruk Trek is a 3-day trek that takes you into the foothills of the Annapurna Mountain Ranges to the beautiful heritage village of Ghandruk.

There are plenty of friendly locals to host you in the villages, as well as a Gurung museum which you can visit to learn more about the Gurung culture.

The Annapurna Region is one of the most beautiful places to go trekking in the world, with plenty of different treks, such as the popular Annapurna Circuit . This trek takes almost two weeks, so if you don’t have a lot of time, the Ghandruk trek is a nice way to get a taste of the mountains.

A nice aspect of the Ghandruk trek is that you won’t see many other tourists on the trail. Instead, you will find lush green forests, friendly locals, and beautiful views.

Ghandruk Trek Itinerary

The Ghandruk Trek is typically done in 3-4 days. I did the 4-day trek as part of a one-week tour through Nepal with Intrepid Travel. Four days will give you plenty of time to stop to enjoy the scenery, chat with locals, and take your time to explore the picturesque villages.

The first day starts with an hour’s drive from Pokhara to the trailhead of the Ghandruk trek.

start of ghandruk trek

We started the trail, which went through forests, paddy fields, and stone stairs. The Annapurna mountain ranges should also be visible on this part of the trek, but because it was overcast on the first day of our trek, we couldn’t see them during the day.

stone staircase

Although I was disappointed about the lack of mountain ranges in view, the scenery was still beautiful as we passed through many local villages and colorful paddy fields. The clouds added a certain moodiness to the landscape.

Wheatfields hiking through the Ghandruk Trek

It was so interesting to pass by all the beautiful villages and see the local women hard at work. Everyone we passed was friendly and said hello.

Rice field

The first day of the trek ends at the charming village of Ghandruk. Inhabited by the Gurung community, Ghandruk village is well-serviced, with tea houses to stay in. It has stunning views of the Annapurna South mountain range, including Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare.

Ghandruk Village view

On our first night in Ghandruk, the clouds cleared out from the sky, and I saw the Himalayas appear before my eyes for the first time. It was a moment I’ll never forget. Although it was freezing, I stood outside and watched them lit by the moon and stars for hours.

The next morning, we woke up early to see the sunrise over the mountains. The way the morning light hits them is incredible. It’s one of the best sunrises I’ve woken up for.

sunrise over the himalays

The second day starts with more mountain views for breakfast, then a two-hour descending trek towards the village of Tolka where we stopped for lunch. Afterward, we trekked another three hours up to a village where we spent the night in tea house.

tea house with mountain view

You don’t get bored on the trail as there is so much beauty around. Aside from the majestic mountain landscapes, the paths are full of green forests, red rhododendrons, and friendly faces. Both locals and animals. I encountered so many dogs, cows, and goats on this trail!

View this post on Instagram How is it even legal to be this cute? A post shared by Dogs Around The World (@doggosintheworld) on Nov 23, 2018 at 5:50am PST

So many dogs would come and join me for parts of the trek which was one of my favorite parts about it.

You will also meet lots of friendly locals and fellow trekkers while staying at the tea houses. This was one of my favorite parts about trekking in Nepal; the feeling of community in each of the villages is so special.

On the third day of the trek, we took a trail from the village of Dhampus to Hemjakot.

It was mostly uphill for the first two hours, then downhill for the rest for a total of six hours of trekking. This section of the trail was fairly remote; we hardly saw any other people.

Just a lot of beautiful rhododendron plants, which I never got sick of.

That night we stayed with a local family in their home in Hemjakot. I loved this stay as they had a ton of baby goats we got to play with.

The Ghandruk trek could be done in three days, but we extended it to four. The last day was an easy three-hour descent to Phedi, where we caught a bus back to Pokhara in time for a well-deserved lunch.

Food on The Ghandruk Trek

You don’t need to worry about bringing a ton of food or water with you on the Ghandruk trek because you will pass by and stay in so many villages with restaurants. Of course, I always recommend bringing snacks while trekking! My favorite is cliff bars.

restaurant view point

The food they sell in the tea houses is surprisingly diverse. You can get local Nepali cuisine, as well as Western food like pizza and pasta. It’s not amazing but definitely does the trick. The best part about the restaurants is that they usually come with an amazing view.

The villages usually have a small shop where you can fill up water and snacks. Nothing was particularly healthy, but it’s good if you need a quick sugar pick-me-up. One of the best parts about hiking is justifying all the snacks!

Fitness Level Required for the Ghandruk Trek

The Ghandruk trek is relatively easy. Each day is only about five-six hours of walking, so you don’t need to be in amazing shape to do this. That said, there are a lot of stairs, so be prepared for that.

Unlike many treks in Nepal, you don’t have to worry about altitude sickness on this trail. The trek doesn’t go past 2000 meters of elevation.

How to Book the Ghandruk Trek

You can do this trek as part of a tour with Intrepid, who I recommend as a tour company.

Not only do they plan excellent tours, but they are committed to responsible travel. I’ve traveled with them in the past, and it’s allowed me to have unique experiences and connections with the local community. You will be in good hands with them!

Alternatively, you can book the Ghandruk trek right here through a Nepal travel agency. There are many all along the lakeside in Pokhara. If you are in Kathmandu, you will need to get the tourist bus to Pokhara, which takes about seven hours.

Permits are required for the trek, which you can arrange from tour agencies. A guide is not required for the trail but is recommended if you are not a seasoned trekker or not well-versed with Napoli language and culture.

Not only will the guide help you during the trek with guidance, but they can provide insight into the local culture.

Best time to go on the Ghandruk Trek

The best season to go on the Ghandruk Trek is from Mid-September until May, when you find great views around the region.

The summer season from June-July is the rainy season and not a good time to go trekking in this region.

Packing List for the Ghandruk Trek

You won’t find hotels, but you will find small villages with tea houses to stay in all along the trail.

You don’t need to worry about bringing food and water, as supplies can be bought at each village, and there are plenty of tea houses to cook you a meal.

Here is a suggested packing list for the Ghandruk Trek. You can always hire a porter if you don’t want to carry your bag.

  • SPF T-Shirts x3
  • Hiking Pants X 2
  • Underwear X 3
  • Comfortable trekking shoes, and sandals to wear at night
  • Packable Down jacket
  • Hat/Scarf/Gloves for night
  • Sunscreen/Sun hat/Sunglasses
  • Refillable Water bottle – Use Lifestraw and then you can drink the water along the way
  • Packable Towel
  • Sleeping bag – the teahouses provide blankets but they are lightweight and it can be chilly at night
  • Trekking poles – not essential but can be helpful going downhill
  • Camera – check my photography guide for the best travel cameras.

Don’t forget travel insurance!

You definitely want travel insurance if you plan to trek in Nepal. Injuries are common on the trails, and in the event that something happens and you have to get air-lifted out via helicopter, this won’t be cheap.

Other Adventurous Things to do around Pokhara

Pokhara was one of my favorite places in Nepal; there’s a ton of outdoor adventure around the area.

1. Paragliding

I took my first paragliding flight in Pokhara, which was so much fun and got me hooked on paragliding. It’s one of the top 5 commercial tandem paragliding locations in the world, making it a perfect place to try if it’s your first time paragliding.

2. River Rafting

River Rafting. I actually got to Pokhara via a 2-day river rafting tour from Kathmandu on the Trishuli River. It was an incredible experience; we rafted for about six hours a day and camped overnight by the side of the river.

3. Zip-lining

Another way to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu that looks pretty epic is this 2-day zip-lining adventure. While Costa Rica will still forever be my favorite place to go zip-lining, this one does look incredible and I’m adding it to my list for the next time I’m in Nepal!

4. Trekking

With the Annapurna mountain ranges so close by, there are plenty of other hikes to do in the area, including the famous Annapurna Base Camp trek and Annapurna Circuit trek. Another popular trek to do in the area is the 9 Day Ghorepani Poonhill Trekking.

5. Helicopter Flight

If you’re not up for hiking, there are other ways to enjoy the mountain ranges! You can take a scenic helicopter flight , or a micro-light flight . I did the helicopter flight over Everest and it was incredible.

6. Chitwan National Park

After Pokhara, I went to Chitwan National Park, which is about four hours away. I have mixed feelings about this park. While it’s one of the best places in the world to see the one-horned Rhino , I felt depressed about how the park treated its elephants . There are plenty of other incredible ethical elephant encounters in Asia if you want to see them.

Trip Description

Ghandruk Trek – 3 Days is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. This trek is famous for the mountain views, Gurung culture and their hospitality. Ghandruk is the village with largest gurung settlements of Annapurna Region. It is also a common en route place for many treks within Annapurna region. Ghandruk village is situated in the northwest part from the city of Lake Pokhara at an altitude of 1940m above the sea level. Ghandruk is the most popular short and scenic trek that can be done from Pokhara.

As the maximum altitude of this trek is only 1940 meters there is no chance of getting altitude sickness. Similarly, Ghandruk Trek can also be the best destination for family treks as well. Ghandruk Trek offers you amazing trials with most amazing views and lots of good experiences of lifetime. The warm and unique hospitality of gurung people will increase your affection towards the place. Moreover, you can also try the Gurung attire and take the pictures in traditional style. Ghandruk Trek is also suitable for people of every age group as the trials are relatively simple.

You will have a short drive to Nayapul from where the original trek begins. After then the trials follows a steep climb towards Birethanti. From there you can see the spectacular views of mountains framed with rhododendron trees and it looks even amusing with blooming rhododendrons if you are trekking during autumn. After crossing some other villages like Chumurung, Sayuli Bazaar, Kimche and Chane you will find your destination ‘Ghandruk’ with a backdrop of Machhapuchre Mountain next to you waiting to offer you the best experience.

Best Time to Trek Ghandruk

One best thing about Ghandruk Trek is that it can be done all year around. It is better to avoid the rainy seasons because you may not have enjoyable trekking experience during rainy season. The best time for Ghandruk can be in between September to May. This time of the year gives the best views and the most favorable environment for trekking.

Short Itinerary

Day 01: Drive to Nayapul and trek to Ghandruk.

Day 02: Trek to Pothana.

Day 03: Trek to Nayapul and Drive to Pokhara.

Ghandruk Village

Ghandruk:land of the gurungs.

G handruk, the famous Gurung village at 2,010m (6,600ft), is located northwest of the lakeside city of Pokhara. It is accessible in one day, with a four to five hour walk after a short ride from the city. Given that the small village is on the much used trail to the Annapurna Sanctuary or the Annapurna Base Camp (also called ‘ABC’ by trekkers), it claims to be the most visited trekking area in Nepal, and is widely known and popular among international visitors. After opening the Pokhara-Baglung highway in the mid 1990s, Ghandruk (Ghandrung on some maps) has seen a gradual increase in domestic tourists as well.

Mountain view from Ghandruk

You can see a beautiful mountain view of Annapurna range includes Annapaurna South(far left) , Himchuli(Heuchuli) , Gangapurna and Macchapucchre (Fishtail, dog or tiger) on far right from Ghandruk, which is best view point with short walking, culture with Gurung peeoples

After having breakfast in Pokhara we will start our drive to Nayapul. It takes about 2 hours from Pokhara to reach Nayapul. After then the trial goes through a steep climb and then ascends to the Modi Khola which takes you to Birethanti. The trial passes by forests, terraced fields, rivers and few other small settlements. On your trial you will encounter the rich flora and fauna that this region has been blessed with. The Ghandruk village gives you the picturesque of typical Nepalese lifestyles and gurung cultures.

We will have our breakfast at Ghandruk. After then we will start our trek to Pothana. The trek at first goes downhill through uneven stone steps. Going downhill seems easy but can be harder than climbing uphill so you need to be careful. The trials offers breath taking sceneries along the way with is worth the trials. The stairs takes you to Kimbu village on the bank of Modi Khola. The trial again ascends to Landruk village which is also a famous trekking destination. We will stop there for lunch and take a short break. After then we will again begin our trial and pass several villages like Deurali and Tolkha which offers spectacular views of the mountains like Annapurna south, Dhaulagiri, Himchuli and many other and then a short descend will take you to Pothana. Overnight at Pothana.

Today is the final day of our trek. After having breakfast at Pothana we will begin our trial to Phhedi. The trial today is almost a downhill trial. We will pass to several villages on our way. Hotels Accommodation in Ghandruk

One of the highlights of our trip to Ghandruk was Gurung Cottage. Hidden inside nooks and corners of little Ghandruk was Gurung Cottage. we Highly recommendation this place

Ghandruk’s Pioneer Hotelier Motivation comes in different forms; Shankar Bahadur Gurung found his upon his encounter with a group of foreigners visiting Ghandruk. While many villagers during the 1970s were scared to bump into foreigners, Gurung, despite his inadequacy in English, wanted to talk to them and assist them. The foreigners wanted a place to stay, but there was none – no hotel, no lodge. Gurung, hoping to provide them with any type of shelter, offered them lodging at his house. With everybody gathered around the chulo (hearth), and staying together as a family, a day’s stay turned into three. A small house with one door and no windows must have appealed a lot to the guests, for many other foreigners, upon other villagers’ recommendations, began staying in Gurung’s home. The love he received from the tourists motivated him deeply, motivated him to open Ghandruk’s first hotel – Hotel Milan.

Nevertheless, the journey for Gurung wasn’t easy. Financing was the biggest hurdle, but there were so many other factors that Gurung had to deal with. Although basic things like lack of good roads, inadequate supply of materials were obvious difficulties, Gurung also had to deal with the villagers’ backbiting. They were very critical of Gurung’s – what they called “slavish” nature – they despised the fact that he washed dishes, cooked food for the Ghandruk tourists. But Gurung did not back down. He had patience and he did what he had to do.

Finally, after a great deal of effort, through loans from banks and his earnings as a teacher, Shanker Bahadur bought a house  for himself with Rs. 200,000, that which is equivalent to 50 to 60 lakhs today. The one and only hotel in Ghandruk was thus born, and guests kept pouring in. His hard work paid off and his vision bloomed. Not only did the villagers start respecting him but other people too got inspired to follow his footsteps. His effort to introduce a hotel in Ghandruk paved the way for lodges like Himalayan and Hill Top.

In time, as the competition grew, Gurung had to shift his hotel towards the upper part of Ghandruk for better picturesque views, in order to attract more tourists. But what Gurung feels now is a challenge is the load shedding hours, making it very difficult for the hotel as well as his customers. Though he had to make minor changes in his interiors, his guests tell him not to make any changes with his traditional outer designs. Shankar Bahadur is content today with what he has achieved, despite his ups and downs he stays firm and  wants to continue serving his guests for as long as he can.

Food in Ghandruk

Temperate Paradise Weather-wise, Ghandruk boasts a pleasant climate without extremes of heat or cold, year round. Excluding the monsoon period (July through early Sept), all months are suitable for hikes to Ghandruk, though you might encounter a temporary dusting of snow on some mid-winter days. The village has electricity (generated locally), telephone and a health post. For a comfortable stay, the lodges and inns provide all modern amenities. Some even have Internet access! For a gourmet trekker, they dish out all kinds of great food, from dal-bhat to European and Chinese cuisine. The evenings in the hub area resound to singing and traditional dancing that are arranged by the lodge-owners for their foreign guests. Should you decide to extend your hike, they can arrange trips to Ghorepani and Pun Hill, a day’s walk away, or a more arduous ascent, with necessary logistics, lasting several days into the Annapurna Sanctuary, and to the Machhapuchhre and Annapurna Base Camps.

For a short and undemanding hike, a visit to Ghandruk, set in the gentle folds of the midland mountains, in the shadow of formidable Annapurna peaks, high above the Modi river valley, in a rolling hilly countryside, provides amazing glimpses of rural life. It is (at least) a 300-year-old village in its old form, providing glimpses of time-honored ancient cultural traditions. Here, as guests of the legendary Gurungs, you’ll find a fascinating getaway, both memorable and educational.

3 day Ghandruk Trek I had a short window for trekking while in Nepal for an event. Angie was very professional and prompt in arranging the trek for my schedule even when I was slow to decide and respond. My guide Ram was friendly and knowledgeable and chose clean and comfortable places with great views for lodging and meals. They both went above and beyond to make my experience the best it could be. I only wish I’d had more time for a more challenging trek SOURCE | TRIPADVISOR

An Excellent Team We had a very short notice trip into Nepal but with some ideas of what we wanted to do. Eyes on Nepal responded quickly (email and whatsapp) and offered suggestions for a short Ghandruk Landruk trek. We were in country before the arrangements were finalized. Nothing however was too much trouble with Mishra meeting us at the hotel to sort and pass on the details. The planning, in country flights, pickups, permits and Pokhara hotels were professionally and seamlessly done. The trek was excellently managed. Ram our guide was a rare gem. Being of a more mature generation perhaps the mind was a bit more ambitious than the legs were prepared for (all those downhill steps!). Ram’s patience, knowledge and encouragement were instrumental in making this a most enjoyable and memorable experience. We look forward to further trekking with him. A really excellent and supportive team. No hesitation in recommending them. SOURCE | TRIPADVISOR

  • Annapurna Gurung Trail

This short circuit, that balances trekking with sightseeing, immerses you in the unique culture, music and dance of the scenic villages and lively hospitality of the Gurung people.

landruk trek

This well-loved trail threads through millet and maize fields, farmlands and forests, beneath the revered peaks of Machapuchare and the Annapurnas. You’ll cross suspension bridges over roaring rivers, mount stone steps, follow ridge lines, to be delivered each day to another friendly stone village to bathe in the warm mountain welcome of the Gurung. Accept a glass of chai outside a tiled-roof teahouse as you drink in the stunning views. Sample fresh local produce. Dive into local stores, tranquil monasteries, and farms full of children and chickens. Connect with fellow travelers. And end each day’s hike in pure MLN comfort.

The Gurungs’ northern origins shine through the broad faces and strong cheekbones of this Tibeto Burman ethnic group who for thousands of years have settled Nepal’s mid-hill slopes and welcomed passing travellers. In their own language, they are Tamu (“Ta” means thunder, “mu” is sky), followers of a tolerant combination of Buddhist, Hindu and animist religions.

Emanating such warmth, it’s interesting to know the Gurungs are also proud soldiers who served the early Shah kings during their expansionist military conquests. These are the men who compete each year to join the British and Indian fighting forces, the Gurkhas. Veterans, still wearing their medals, will be keen to share stories. The capable women (equal to men in this culture) will be bantering together in the sunshine, or preparing their local specialties, and the children, too, will delight you with their energy and curiosity.

Spring Season

Spring season begins from the months of March and ends in May . During these months the skies are clear giving the unobstructed view of mountain tops. Also the days are sunny while nights are a bit chilly.

However, the paths can be covered in snow during the early month of March as winter will have just finished. So before traveling it is better to read the weather forecast. Also, this season is the crowded time of the year when routes are filled with various trekkers.

Monsoon Season

If you are the kind of person that loves to walk in peace handling rain showers along the way. Then Monsoon season is the best time to visit Mardi Himal.

Monsoon season begins from the month of June and ends in August . This is the season for continuous rainfall so the paths can be slippery and muddy. Thus most of the trekkers don’t prefer trekking during this season

Due to continuous rainfall you can view new species of vegetation blooming through the paths. So the majority of people visiting during this time are botanists or researchers.

The dark rain cloud hides the beautiful mountain behind them which can be a bore. So, if you plan on traveling during these months then be well prepared.

Autumn Season

Autumn Season is the peak season of the year when trekkers from all around the world visit Nepal. This is the best time to visit Mardi Himal. Everything is at its best weather, nature, etc.

While trekking you will be astounded by the paths filled with colorful flowers and plants of different species. Also the view of the mountains in the crystal clear sky. The weather is also at its peak neither too hot nor too cold.

For Mardi Himal trek you will be trekking on the eastern part of the Annapurna region. This trek route is both enjoyable and challenging as you climb in elevation above 3000 m.

Some of the Mardi Himal Trek difficulties is given below:

Mardi Himal Trek Route Difficulty

The Mardi Himal Trek difficulty is considered a moderate level.  That is easy for experienced trekkers while a bit harsh for novice trekkers. If this is your first trek then it will be quite rough.

As you will be making many steep ascends and descend in the trails. So it is better to be prepared physically and mentally. You can do a few exercises such as running, cycling, swimming, short hike, etc.

Altitude Sickness

On this trek you will be heading up to an altitude of 4500 m above sea level. So there are high chances you might suffer from Altitude Sickness . This has always been a major problem for trekkers while trekking in high altitude.

The air starts to get thinner as you climb in higher altitude which is the main reason for Altitude sickness. When suffering from altitude sickness you may see symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, sleepless nights, many more.

To prevent this acclimatization is held to let your body adjust to the climate in higher elevation. Also it is recommended to drink plenty of water and keep your body hydrated.

As you will be making steep climbs your body will sweat a lot and get tired soon. So walk slowly while resting in places along the way and keep drinking water.

Weather Condition

The weather during Winter and Monsoon seasons are thrilling and challenging. So these seasons are the least preferred time for trekking.

Winter is the coldest time of the year and there are chances that snow can block your trek way. Due to blockage many areas can be closed so you won’t be able to visit those places. Also the temperature drops below freezing point . Thus while traveling during this time pack extra warm clothes.

Whereas, Monsoon is the season when due to continuous rainfall landslide and flood can be an obstruction for your trek. You might have to delay your trip due this season.

So before traveling it is better to view the weather forecast. But an advantage would be the privacy you get during these seasons due to less crowded routes.

Accommodation

Ghandruk to Mardi Himal
