Things to Do During a Layover at Athens Airport

Undoubtedly, layovers at the airport are considered a colossal waste of time and a “necessary evil” to get to your desired destination. But what if they are not? Waiting at the airport allows you to do things you‘ve never had the time to do and even clear your mind. You never know: perhaps your next layover at Athens Airport won’t be a real letdown but actual fun!

Do you Have a Short Layover at ATH Airport?

Short layovers are perfect for getting to know the airport amenities. The relatively new Athens International Airport is fully kitted to offer you an unforgettable stopover experience. Are you wondering how you are going to spend your free time at ATH Airport? Just take a look at the following suggestions:

1. Do your Homework about Athens Airport

Check out all the info about Athens Airport before your scheduled flight. In that way, you will be familiar with the airport facilities, be aware of all the available services and exploit the time spent there. In any case, you should first find out where your gate is so that you can plan your layover without worrying about missing the next flight.

2. Eat, Drink, and Shop at Athens Airport

Even if airports are notorious for their bad food, you will find out that after a thorough search, you can come up with hidden gems at ATH Airport. Every airport offers interesting culinary options if you just look into it. Choose among a wide variety of restaurants and fast foods, have a drink to relax, or fling yourself into endless shopping at Athens Airport.

3. Tie up Loose Ends

Spend waiting time at Athens Airport doing whatever tasks have to be done. Using the airport’s free Wi-Fi, you can arrange your emails, do necessary video calls, and even finish a presentation. Please note that the airport’s Wi-Fi is free for the first 60 minutes. After that time, all you have to do is re-enter the airport’s Wi-Fi to start a new 60-minutes session.

4. Read a Book

Do you remember the promising book you bought but never had the time to read? Now is the time! Grab a drink or coffee, make yourself comfortable and finally start the book!

5. Make a Schedule for your Journey

Organize your trip while waiting at Athens Airport to make the most of it. Make a to-do list, note your preferences and interests and get to know your destination seamlessly and stress-free.

6. Treat Yourself!

Take a look at Athens airport’s available services and facilities. Have your hair done, do a manicure-pedicure or relish a massage or beauty treatment. Do you still consider layovers annoying?

7. Layover Time may well be Cultural Time!

Athens International Airport offers many cultural options. After all, you’re in Greece. Hence, museums and sightseeing are in order. You can choose from the Acropolis Exhibition, housing showpieces from the Acropolis Museum and interesting replicas, while near Entrance 3 of the second airport level lies a limited museum area with artifacts found at the nearby Mesogaia area. Another exhibition dedicated to El. Venizelos, the great Greek politician after whom the airport was named, is also located in the Departures area. Finally, the airport hosts periodical art collections and cultural exhibitions from time to time.

8. Enjoy Family-Time

If you are traveling with your children, you’ll probably be even more stressed about your layover at the airport. However, El. Venizelos shelters a specially designated playground area just next to El.Venizelos Exhibition. Addressed to children from 2.5-9 years old, the airport playground is fully equipped to give children amazing playtime.

9. Visit Athens Airport’s Lounges

Check out which Athens airport’s lounges are only for airline members and which can be accessed on pay. Airport lounges are the perfect way to spend a layover. Comfortable seats, quiet and cozy environment, tasty choices, and drinking options will offer you the premium services you are looking for.

10. Visit the Nearby Airport Hotel

Sofitel Airport Hotel is located only 50m from the airport’s exit doors. Thus, even if you don’t have the time to book a room, you can enjoy the premium drinking and dining services from the panoramic-view hotel’s roof or even relish the provided spa treatments.

11. Sleep at Athens Airport

If you need to rest but you are traveling on a budget, look for the airport sleeping areas. You’ll find chairs without armrests comfy enough to close your eyes for a while.

Long Layovers are Ideal to Meet Athens

During a long layover (7-9 hours), staying in the airport isn’t advisable. Unless you are really tired, you should head off to catch a quick glimpse of historic Athens. Are you a “history lover”? Do you like shopping? Do you prefer alternative ideas such as wine tasting? Make up your mind and enjoy your spare time at Athens Airport!

The Sightseeing Tour

Athens city center gathers some of the must-see attractions of the city. Thus, you can leave the airport and head to Syntagma Square, the actual heart of the city hosting the Greek Parliament. From there, you can walk across to Ermou street, the city’s main shopping street, and head to Athens Cathedral. Monastiraki, a huge pedestrian flea market area, and Plaka, a picturesque Athenian neighborhood with scenic houses and plenty of dining and drinking options, are within walking distance. On your way, you’ll also pass by the Temple of Olympian Zeus, another important historical monument of Athens.

The Majestic Acropolis

Acropolis is also located in Athens city center. “Acropolis” is the name of the entire citadel complex, whereas the famous temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athina -Parthenon temple- is located on its highest level. Please keep in mind that climbing to Parthenon is a long way, and there is usually a long queue to enter the archaeological site. That’s why Acropolis shouldn’t be combined with other attractions, but it is better to have plenty of time in front of you to enjoy the prominent monument! What’s more, on your way up, you’ll come across other historical sights, such as Erechtheion, Dionysos Theater, etc. The perfect end for your visit to Acropolis is the adjacent  Acropolis Museum , a relatively new museum housing the Acropolis findings.

Our Tip : If you don’t have time to visit Acropolis, you can climb to the neighboring Filopappou Hill, which offers amazing views of the Acropolis and the nearby areas.

The Museum Options

Apart from the Acropolis Museum, one of the most impressive and well-known museums of the city, without doubt, Athens offers its visitors various alternatives. The National Archaeological Museum  is listed among the world’s finest, while the  Museum of Cycladic Art  houses findings from the island Cyclades Area. Finally, the  Benaki Museum  is also nearby and hosts the collections of the private collector Emmanouil Benaki.

Choose a Tour

The ideal way to visit as much sightseeing as possible during your Athens airport layover is to book a tour. Both private and group guided tours introduce visitors to Athens. Choose a tour of the famous historical landmarks in Athens city center or even get to visit the area of Sounion, located 50km from Athens, where the Temple of Poseidon is to be found.

The nearby Attica Zoological Park

If you opt for a near-the-airport yet unforgettable alternative, you can visit the  Attica Zoological Park , only 10 minutes away from Athens Airport. The zoo is home to more than 2000 animals and promises a memorable experience for both adults and, of course, families.

The Ultimate Shopping Option: McArthurGlen

If you are a “shop until you drop” type of person, you’ll simply love spending your airport layover at the tax-free  McArthurGlen . The shopping village, 15 minutes from ATH Airport, houses famous brands and designers at outlet prices, a playground, as well as many dining options.

What about Wine Tasting during your Layover?

If wine-tasting sounds appealing to you, you’ll have some serious picking to do.  Georga’s family ,  Gikas Winery  and  Papagiannakos Domain  are only some of the top options, located up to 20 minutes drive from the airport. In any case, two things are advised: don’t drink too much, and don’t lose track of time and miss your flight!

Go for a Swim!

Forget all about sightseeing, shopping, etc. If the weather allows it, just go for a swim. Plenty of beaches are located close to the airport. From the nearby Porto Rafti (18 minutes away) and Kokkino Limanaki in Rafina (23 minutes away) to Kakia Thalassa (a 24-minute drive), Vouliagmeni (35 minutes far away) and Kape Beach (a 42-minutes drive), if swimming isn’t a good idea or you are simply not into it, just go and enjoy the view and the fresh fish at the local tavernas.

My Athens Layover Tour: How to make the most of your layover in Athens

If you’ve got a long layover in Athens or perhaps just a short amount of time to see the best things to do in Athens then I have got the perfect tour for you!

Earlier this week I had a five-hour layover in Athens. It initially seemed like a brilliant idea….until I considered the reality of trying to whizz around Athens with an enormous suitcase, limited time and no idea how to get around!

And then I discovered the five-hour Athens Layover Tour with Welcome Pickups , a genius idea to help travellers make the most of their layover in Athens.

Welcome Pickups are a company I was already familiar with for offering private airport transfers, but I got very excited when I saw their Private Ultimate Layover Tour of Athens.

About the Ultimate Layover Tour of Athens

layover tours athens

The Layover Tour is a five hour tour with four stops around Athens.

You’re picked up from your chosen location (usually the airport) in a private car with a lovely, knowledgeable guide. You are given a snack in the car and have plenty of opportunities to stop for food and drink. You are then dropped back off at your chosen location, possibly the airport again or maybe the cruise port or a hotel.

It’s a stress-free way to see as much as possible in a short space of time. We saw so much without feeling rushed or worried about how to get from A to B. We also didn’t need to worry about our luggage, which is often a problem during a layover!

My Athens Layover Tour

Layover in Athens tour

I took a layover tour while in Athens before boarding a cruise ship. My flight arrived in Athens at 6am but I couldn’t board the ship until midday so this tour was a perfect solution.

We met our guide at 9am (to give ourselves time to have some breakfast and freshen up after an overnight flight) and he dropped us off at the cruise terminal at 3pm.

Our guide, John, was amazing. He was knowledgeable and friendly and we knew he’d get us to the port in time! We communicated via the Welcome Pickups app to arrange a time and place to meet and any extra details John would need to know.

When John picked us up he created a Whatsapp group so we could message him when we were ready to leave each stop. John didn’t visit the attractions with us but dropped us off as close as possible (usually just a few meters from the entrance) and would then need to drive off as he was unable to park. He’d tell us everything we needed to know before entering and even send us a link on Whatsapp to a website where we could read more about the attraction before we went in! Honestly, this guy was on the ball! Then a few minutes before we wanted to leave the attraction, we’d send him a message and he’d be outside in the car two minutes later. What a service.

Within minutes of getting in the car, John stopped to get us a welcome treat. He picked up some bougatsa, a traditional Greek custard pie topped with flakey pastry and icing sugar. It was absolutely delicious and the perfect way to start our tour! John gave us icy bottles of water and even popped our water bottled into his cooler whenever we got out of the car. John even had tissues and baby wipes on hand when my friend needed to use a public restroom! He’d thought of everything to ensure our layover was as easy as possible. It was obvious he’d done this a billion times before but he still told us about Athens with passion and enthusiasm. He even took us to his local neighbourhood for lunch where we had the most delicious pork gyros in a traditional and un-touristy restaurant!

Of course, with this level of personal service and convenience comes a price. This tour was  €210 for two people. I’m sure there are cheaper ways to see the city in a short space of time but if simplicity, convenience and a stress-free experience are important to you then I can’t recommend the tour enough.

OK, enough about the tour, let’s look at what we got up to and some of the best things to do in Athens within just 5 hours!

#1. Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium

The first stop on our tour was the incredible Panathenaic Stadium and this is one of the top historic things to do in Athens.

  • Here are some things you need to know about the Panathenaic Stadium:
  • It’s a multi-purpose stadium used for things like athletic, musical, equestrian or cultural events
  • It was originally built in 330 BC!
  • It began life as a simple racecourse for the Panathenaic Games
  • It’s the only stadium built entirely from marble
  • It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympic games in 1869

Panathenaic Stadium

#2. The Acropolis

the Acropolis in Athens

Ahhh of course, possibly the most famous attraction in Greece and one of the most popular things to do in Athens, visit the Acropolis!

The ancient citadel perched above the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the most complete ancient Greek complex in the world! It’s got to be one of the most famous archeological sites in the world!

It’s worth noting that the Acropolis is very hot and very busy during the summer months. There isn’t a lot of shade and it involves a fair amount of walking over uneven ground. You can do a guided tour or you can wander at your own pace. We bought our tickets when we arrived and stayed for about 90 minutes.

It was fairly quiet when we visited but it does get incredibly busy during peak summer months (it was early October when I visited). If you’re expecting it to be busy you can pre-book your Athens tickets and tours to avoid queuing. This link will take you to a great tour available on Get Your Guide . I book most of my tickets through Get Your Guide as I’ve always found them to be reliable and well priced.

#3. Changing of the Guards

layover tours athens

Our next stop was to see the Changing of the Guards outside of the Presidential Mansion. The guards change in a ceremonial routine on the hour, every hour, 24 hours a day! John told us it happens at five minutes to the hour but it actually happened on the hour. I’m not sure if he didn’t want us to be late or they’re a little flexible on the timings! There is also a ‘grand change’ which happens at 11am on Sunday mornings.

There are two Evzones in ceremonial uniforms guarding the Presidential Mansion. They look incredible in their traditional outfits and these disciplined soldiers do not move an inch while they stand guard for an hour. There is another man standing nearby ensuring people don’t get too close or irritate the soldiers!

One really interesting feature of their uniform is their shoes. They wear Tsarouchia shoes which have at least 60 nails in the base. While the Evzones perform their routine they scratch the nails along the floor to simulate the sound of a battle! The sound was like nails down a chalkboard for me but it was an amazing routine to watch!

The Presidential Mansion is opposite Syntagma Square where you’ll find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

#4. Lycabettus Hill

layover tours athens

We then took the cable car to the top of Lycabettus Hill . John had originally tried to drive us to the top but due to traffic and ‘Greek parking’ we were unable to drive up. But the cable car was fun so we didn’t mind.

From Lycabettus Hill you have views over the whole of Athens and it really makes you appreciate how big this city is. It’s the highest point in Athens and, if you have time, climbing to the top is a popular attraction.

A stunning little church stands at the top and we were lucky enough to see a Christening while we were there. The church was decorated with beautiful flowers and the most adorable little baby was dressed all in white for her big day.

There’s a restaurant at the top which is surprisingly quiet and if you have time I highly recommend stopping for a drink because you will have the best view in all of Athens!

layover tours athens

If you’re interested in booking the Athens layover tour with Welcome Pickups then I highly recommend it! If you have any questions about my experience please do feel free to leave a comment below or send me a DM on Instagram and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

If you’re looking for a private airport transfer in Athens then Welcome Pickups are definitely worth checking out. They have lovely, local drivers who all speak perfect English and they’ll monitor your flight for delays. You can also pre-pay a flat fee and the 24/7 customer support was really quick and easy to use. They also offer free cancellation which is an extra bonus!

Wednesday 22nd of June 2022

Hi Just found your site. Wonderful. We are taking a cruise end of Aug 2022 out of Athens and are arriving early so we have 1 1/2 days prior to embarkation day. What do you think of the hop on hop off bus for our full day. Do you like the idea of staying on it to see everything before hopping off. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Also we stop in Santorini and wanted to see Oia and Fira. We are cruising with Princess and they use different docks for these locations. Did you feel comfortable with the taxi between Fira to Oia and back.? There would probably be just the 2 of us doing this unless we find people from the ship. We are retired and healthy and game for some adventure but don't want to take unnecessary risks. Your thoughts are appreciated. thanks Nancy

Monday 27th of June 2022

Hi Nancy, how exciting, I hope you have an incredible trip. To answer your questions - yes, we felt 100% happy and comfortable taking a taxi in Santorini. Prices were agreed before getting in and it was all very professional. So yes, I'd definitely recommend taking local taxis. As for the hop on hop off bus then I think it's personal preference. I do think they're a really nice and easy way to get a brief overview of everything. It's worth noting that it will be very hot so it may be too hot to be on the open top deck.

Layover In Athens – The Ultimate Guide 2024

The Parthenon, Athens

Athens, the capital of modern Greece, has a better claim than most places to being the cradle of Western civilization. But along with the ancient traces of the past, modern Athens is a bustling metropolis where you can experience the vibrancy of Greek culture.

On an Athens stopover, there’s no need to kill time at the airport. Athens Airport has its own Metro station which connects it with the city via Metro Line 3, which calls at both Syntagma and Monastiraki stations in the center of the city. The journey takes around 40 minutes, and trains leave twice an hour at minutes 05 and 35. There are also buses and taxis that can bring you to the city if you’re concerned about trusting the Metro.

To make the most of your Athens Airport layover, drop off your bags at a Bounce luggage storage in Athens . The lighter you travel, the more you’ll be able to see, no matter how short your time in the city is.

6 hour layover in Athens

With only six hours to make your connection, it’s tempting to play it safe and just kill time in the airport. That would be a real shame. Even after you clear customs, pick up your luggage, drop it off at an Athens suitcase storage, and make your way to the city by Metro, you could still have an hour or two to spend in the Greek capital. While that’s nowhere near enough to really get to grips with the city, it could be enough to sample one of its many attractions.

Take the Metro to Monastiraki Metro station , and you’ll step out right into Athens’ bustling heart. Virtually across the street from the station, you’ll find the Ancient Agora of Athens . This impressive ruin is where ancient Athenians used to gather to shop, gossip, and discuss philosophy. The remaining ruins and the on-site museum do a great job of explaining the importance of this location to the ancient Greeks, and an hour or two is exactly the right amount of time to spend to do justice to this world heritage site.

  • Take Metro Line 3 to Monastiraki station.
  • From the station, the walk to the Agora only takes a minute.
  • This was the heart of ancient Athens and is well worth exploring on a short layover.

Athens, Greece

8 hour layover in Athens

If you find yourself with a little more time to kill, you can expand your horizons. After seeing the sights of the Ancient Agora, take a short walk to the Plaka neighborhood. This is one of Athens’ oldest and most charming districts, full of whitewashed old houses and family-owned restaurants. After all that walking around the Agora, you’ll be in need of refreshment, so pick a place to eat and get ready for a journey through Greek cuisine. The restaurants here tend to be a little on the tourist trap side, but it’s hard to pass up the opportunity to dine under the shadow of the Acropolis , Athens’ most famous ancient monument. Plus, if you explore some of the charming back streets, you may find places with a more authentic vibe – and prices to match.

  • Explore the Plaka neighborhood for interesting shopping and great dining.
  • You can often avoid tourist trap restaurants by exploring quieter back streets.
  • Greek cuisine is an attraction all by itself, not something you should miss while you’re in the capital.

10 hour layover in Athens

If your Athens layover allows you to spend 10 hours in the city, you’ll have more options of things to see and do. With 10 hours to spend, you could make the trek to the high hill above the city where the Acropolis stands. This temple complex is a symbol of Athens and of Greece throughout the world, and is one of the country’s most iconic places for a reason. However, exploring the Acropolis can take around four hours, so you’ll have to plan accordingly. Remember that Greek meals tend to be leisurely, so a 10 hour layover could mean exploring only the Acropolis and having a meal, foregoing the Agora to save time.

Still, you won’t regret it. History buffs will be in heaven, but even those who aren’t well-versed in the past will find the Acropolis a beautiful and atmospheric place to visit. Bring a bottle of water and prepare for a trip back in time.

  • A longer layover gives you enough time to explore the Acropolis.
  • It takes around four hours to do justice to this iconic site, so you may have to make cuts elsewhere.
  • There’s very little shade on the Acropolis hill, so make sure you bring water and a hat, especially in summer.

Athens, Greece at sunset

12 hour layover in Athens

A 12-hour layover means you can really explore Athens. Once you’ve seen the Acropolis, you may want to explore its archaeological treasures in the state-of-the-art Acropolis Museum, which can easily eat up two hours of your time. Alternatively, if that’s enough ancient Greece for you, you could take a 15-minute walk to the National Garden . Here, you’ll be surrounded by plant species that are native to Greece, and the sprawling garden offers an oasis of calm in what can be a very busy and bustling city. If you like, you could even bring some food and drink with you and enjoy a picnic in the shade of the well-tended trees here. It’s something of a hidden gem, but easily a place where you could spend a couple of very pleasant hours enjoying the sunshine and recharging your batteries. Don’t forget to drop off your bags at an Athens luggage storage so that you don’t carry more than you need to.

  • It’s a short walk from the Acropolis to the National Garden, which makes a great place to enjoy some peace and quiet.
  • Bring a picnic and relax in the shade of the trees here.
  • Recharge your batteries before heading back to the airport.

Athens, Greece

24 hour layover in Athens

A long layover doesn’t sound like good news, but in a city with as much to see as Athens, it can be. You’ll need a place to stay, and it’s a good idea to choose one that’s central so you don’t spend too much time traveling between airport, hotel, and tourist sites. But an overnight layover means you can take in some of Athens’ exciting nightlife and still see more of its top attractions.

If possible, try to get a ticket for a play in one of Athens’ ancient Greek theaters. Several of Athens’ best-preserved theaters host plays as part of various festivals through the year, and using these centuries-old locations the way they were meant to be used can give you a unique sense of traveling back in time. Or, you could plunge into a more modern side of Greek culture with a food tour of Athens. The city is home to not just fabulous Greek cuisine but also many other dishes from around the world, and a knowledgeable guide can take you to all the best places and explain where they fit in with the city’s changing culinary landscape.

Depending on the timing of your flights, you could spend the next day exploring the National Archaeological Museum . The artifacts here will help you understand more about the buildings you’ve seen on your trip, and you could easily spend two or three hours here. Then it’s time to head back to the airport for your flight, knowing you did justice to this fascinating city in the time you had.

  • See a show at one of Athens’ well-preserved Greek theaters.
  • Take a food tour to learn about the best places to eat in the city.
  • Visit the National Archaeological Museum to see one of the world’s finest collections of ancient Greek artifacts.

Athens, Greece (ATH) Airport: A Comprehensive 5 to 9-Hour Layover & Transit Guide

Just because you only have a 5 to 9 hour layover at Athens International Airport (ATH) doesn’t mean you can’t get an amazing taste of Greece.

Last July, I found myself with a nine -hour layover here. Nine hours! But in the end, it was the best layover I could have asked for. In fact, I think I’ll book long layovers in Athens on purpose next time.

From visiting the Acropolis to drinking fresh Greek beer (surprisingly delicious!) to swimming in crystal clear Mediterranean water, you can make your next Athens layover feel like a vacation on its own.

Here’s how.

  • What to do inside Athens International Airport on a layover
  • Where to store your luggage
  • The Top 6 Places to Visit Around ATH Airport on a shorter layover
  • Heading to the Acropolis & Downtown Athens on a 7+ hour ATH layover
  • Best Transportation Options from Athens International Airport

Should I Stay in the Airport or Exit and Explore Athens?

Athens International Airport is quite large, and there is a lot to do inside if you decide to stay. If you have less than 5 hours , especially between international flights, it’s more worthwhile to stay inside the airport – unless you really want to visit a nearby city or beach .

Ever since Greece eliminated their Covid restrictions, exiting the airport is an absolute breeze if you decide to do so.

5 Activities You Can Do inside Athens International Airport on Your Next Layover

If you decide to stay at the airport, you still have options:

  • Hosted in a specially-designed area of the Main Terminal BuildingDisplay of artifacts on loan from the main Acropolis Museum downtown
  • Includes cast copies of the west Parthenon frieze and a cast copy of the Peplos Kore, one of the most beautiful votive offerings of the archaic
  • Located on the second floor/departure level – near entrance 3
  • Contains 172 archaeological artifacts dating from the Neolithic and Early Helladic to the Post-Byzantine period
  • Designed for children from 3 – 9 years old
  • Enjoy authentic Greek food at Eat Greek
  • Relax in one of 4 complimentary Priority Pass Airport Lounges

Luggage Drop In ATH

You might be thinking: well, what am I supposed to do with my bags? Lucky for you, there is a luggage storage facility located at the end of the terminal. It’s called Care4Bag and it’s located at arrivals hall next to gate one.

  • Costs vary between €5 and €11 per bag
  • Luggage storage in Athens is open from 0700 to 2300

The Best PriorityPass (Complimentary) Lounges in ATH

  • Opposite gate A11
  • Open 0700-2200 Sunday-Thursday, 0700-2300 Friday

  • Includes alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, but buffet service is suspended for covid

Where to Go From Athens International Airport

Unfortunately, Athens International Airport is not located directly next to downtown Athens. Well, maybe that’s a good thing – you might be “forced” to visit a gorgeous small nearby town or two.

If you have an 8 to 9-hour layover in Athens, you have plenty of time to head to downtown Athens.

5 to 7 hour layover in Athens

If you have a 5 to 7-hour layover in Athens, you have time to visit some wonderful nearby beach towns with great restaurants where you can catch some fresh air and maybe go for a quick swim.

Here are some ideas for a quick layover:

  • 21-minute taxi
  • Mooring Restaurant
  • Catch a bus and head straight to Rafina
  • 22-minute Taxi
  • 22-minute taxi
  • 35-minute metro
  • Gikas Winery
  • Domaine Papagiannakos
  • Georgas Family Wines
  • Located at the shopping center ON the airport complex of Athens International Airport.
  • May be reached by express buses X93, X95, X96 and X97
  • Depart from the airport’s arrivals area, between exits 4 and 5
  • Ticket price: €5 each way

7 hour layover or longer: Let’s Go to Downtown Athens !

If this is your first-time visiting Athens, you will be positively stupefied by its beauty. If you’ve already been there, you will also be positively stupefied by its beauty.

In 3-5 hours, you have enough time to visit:

  • Greek markets
  • Roman and Greek Ruins
  • Ancient streets
  • The Acropolis – or – The National Archaeological Museum
  • A rooftop bar for dinner

Hopefully by the time you’re back at the airport, you’ll want to always book 5 to 9-hour layovers. 😊

Need for Speed

Step 1) Get downtown as efficiently as possible to maximize your time in this incredible city.

Quickest way to the Acropolis from Athens International Airport: Take the M3 train to Monastiraki and make your way through beautiful traditional neighborhoods with low-key Greek restaurants, markets, and old white homes lined along ancient Roman and Greek ruins.

  • The M3 train runs every thirty minutes most days, but once an hour on holidays.
  • The train takes 40 minutes. It’s located just in front of the airport – hard to miss.
  • Ticket price: €10-18 return (student discount available)
  • The train brings you about 15-30 minutes walking distance from the entrance of the Acropolis.

All Roads Lead to… Athens?

Step 2a) On the way to the Acropolis, take a walk through the history city’s center. You can walk up gorgeous staircases lined with boutique shops in the Anafiotika neighborhood , make a stop at a fine Greek restaurant, or take pictures at Metamatic , a typical 19th century Athenian courtyard-style café/art foundation.

The alternative way to the Acropolis: Take the X95 bus to Syntagma and walk 25-50 minutes along the national garden or through town towards the acropolis.

  • The X95 bus runs every 20-40 minutes.
  • The bus takes 1 hour 10 minutes for a total transit time of 1h35m.
  • From Syntagma, you can also take the 230 bus or M2 metro to the Acropolis, but neither option saves any time over walking.

Syntagma is an incredibly gorgeous square, located right next to both a Hellenic Parliament AND the National Garden.

Time is Money- and so are taxis from ATH Airport to Downtown Athens

Step 2b) Either way you go, you’ll enjoy an incredibly scenic hike to the Acropolis:

  • Option 1: Walk through the national garden , stopping at the Zappeio Hall and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. From here, walk through the beautiful town of Plaka to the Acropolis.
  • Option 2: If you’re into shopping and markets, you won’t want to miss Ermou Street . It’s a kilometer and a half filled with beautiful markets, some dating centuries, the world-famous Church of Saint Eleftheria, and lovely cafĂŠs.

A quicker option is taking a taxi. This will be about €25-40 each way but takes less than half the time (25 minutes without traffic).

Step 3) Spend about 2 hours exploring the incredible, vibrant sights of the Acropolis!

  • Student discount available

You Want me to Walk Some More?!

Step 4) On the way down from the Acropolis, take a traditional walking tour; stroll along Dionysiou Areopagitou Street , a pedestrian road that connects the Acropolis and accompanying museum to the Plaka neighborhood.

If you have time, this is where you can stop at the Acropolis Museum .

Top hidden gem for an epic sunset view in Athens : On the way to Plaka, you’ll find additional ridiculously beautiful views of the Acropolis and downtown Athens. Continue down to the Thea Terrace location in the Central Hotel for a ridiculously amazing view on the Acropolis and really, really good food and drinks.

If you’re short on time, you can skip this and head straight back to the airport. Don’t worry, there’s food there too!

Heading back to Athens Airport from downtown

Step 5) Time to head back! Here are 4 options to get you back to the airport in time for your next flight!:

  • Take the M2 (metro line 2) from from Acropoli to Monastiraki, then M3 (metro line 3) to the airport
  • Take the M2 (metro line 2) from Acropoli for Syntagma, then the X95 bus to the airport
  • Walk to Monastiraki or Syntagma and then take the M3 (metro line 3) or X95 bus, respectively, to the airport
  • Take a taxi back (€25-40) to ATH and reminisce on the amazing day you just had!

thanks alot of information

Thanks for the info. I’m looking at having 6 hr layover overnight. Is there any places that are open 24/7?

I’m not sure, especially with Covid-19. The Goldair CIP lounge opens at 03.30 if that interests you!

Do you mean “ Artemis Beach” the restaurant? If not where should we eat breakfast in that area on the water?

Both! Depends what you’re looking for, but “Coffee Island” has splendid reviews near the water, and Ricci is highly popular.

great place to visit, thank you for creating this article

My pleasure 😊
