Take a 3D tour of Lichfield Cathedral
Lichfield Cathedral has introduced a new initiative to help people explore the cathedral online.
The cathedral has used technology to keep the public engaged in its activities since closing due to coronavirus social distancing restrictions, launching a virtual prayer wall and also hosting more than 60 live-streamed or pre-recorded videos.
The latest venture is a 3D Virtual Tour of the cathedral, allowing people from all over the world to explore the cathedral at their own pace.
The tour has been created by Lichfield-based UK Surveyors, experts in 3D virtual tours, who digitally mapped the internal and external areas of the cathedral from multiple angles.
The virtual tour will include key points of interest, an opportunity to explore St Chad's Head Chapel and hear a piece of organ music and view the organ loft.
Rev Adrian Dorber, the dean of Lichfield, said he was delighted that the cathedral could offer a virtual tour to the public.
He said: "These last few weeks have been challenging, as we’ve learnt to live, worship and socialise in a different way.
"Like many of our regular visitors and worshippers, I have missed taking a walk around the cathedral and soaking up the atmosphere of this sacred site.
"I am delighted that we are able to offer a virtual tour so that people can access the majesty of the cathedral and the services we have to offer to the wider community."
To take the 3D virtual tour of Lichfield Cathedral, go to lichfield-cathedral.org/visit-the-cathedral/a-virtual-visit , where a guide will be provided on getting the most out the visit.

Virtual Cathedral
24th April 2020
Virtual 3D tours, MP4 Music Competitions and of course, online worship and services: The latest digital output from our clever cathedrals.
New digital resources announced as cathedrals get more and more creative during lockdown
Cathedrals are growing their digital resources and seeking more and more creative ways to engage with their visitors, their communities and their congregations.
This week York Minster announced a new online resource that gives visitors the chance to explore the hidden stories of its Great East Window, Lichfield Cathedral launched a virtual 3D tour for people to visit the cathedral from the comfort of their own homes, and St Edmundsbury Cathedral launched virtual music competitions for young musicians.
Stained Glass Navigator at York Minster York Minster launched the Stained Glass Navigator this week which uses photos taken during the 10 year restoration of its Great East Window for people to explore the whole window online for the first time, view the detail of its intricately painted 600-year old glass, and learn more about its stories. The Navigator will also feature new views of the St Cuthbert Window – the cathedral’s next major stained glass conservation project due to start in 2021.
The Great East Window was created between 1405 and 1408 by a team of artists and craftsmen led by master-glazier and glass-painter John Thornton, and depicts the beginning and end of all things in the Bible, from Genesis to the last book of Revelation.
The Stained Glass Navigator has been created by York Glaziers Trust, Britain’s specialist stained glass conservation studio, with support from the Chapter of York and the York Minster Fund.
“ The new navigator tool offers visitors a unique insight into the details of the two windows’ stained glass and their stories, creating views which would be physically impossible for people to see even if they were standing inside the cathedral,” explains Sarah Brown, Director of York Glaziers Trust.
“The photography has been taken by conservators during our work to care for the Minster’s treasure trove of stained glass, allowing us to share with the public the amazing artwork and stories in a completely new way. ”

Virtual Music competitions at St Edmundsbury Cathedral
The Music department at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, has risen to the challenge of the current situation and launched virtual competitions for young musicians, open to anyone aged 22 and under.
One is for organists and the second for pianists and asks them to upload video recitals in MP4 format. In both cases, there are 3 categories from Beginners (up to Grade 5) to Advanced and an array of excellent prizes including organ lessons with renowned organist David Briggs as well as music vouchers.
With current lockdown restrictions, the cathedral acknowledges rehearsal spaces might be limited and limiting – so have extended the deadlines for entries to 16 May for the piano and 6 June for the organ competition.
They have also launched a new music composition competition aimed at GCSE and A level music students. The compositions will be judged by a team of professional musicians and the winning entries will be invited to perform in the 2021 Lunchtime Recital series at the Cathedral.
The deadline for composition submissions is 23 May.
‘ We want to give young musicians every opportunity to continue to make and create music even in these challenging times ,’ said Acting Director of Music, Richard Cook.

Visitors invited to take a virtual tour of Lichfield Cathedral
A 3D virtual tour of Lichfield Cathedral gives visitors the chance to explore every nook and cranny of the cathedral from the comfort of their own homes.
Lichfield-based company, UK Surveyors have digitally mapped the internal and external areas of the Cathedral from multiple angles to create a fully interactive 3D tour which will take visitors all around the medieval three spired building, enable them to visit key places of interest, walk down the aisles, look at some of the cathedral’s treasures, hear a piece of organ music, listen to an excerpt of Choral Evensong, and find a space to pray or light a candle.
The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield said:
“These last few weeks have been challenging, as we’ve learnt to live, worship and socialise in a different way. Like many of our regular visitors and worshippers, I have missed taking a walk around the Cathedral and soaking up the atmosphere of this sacred site. I am delighted that we are able to offer a virtual tour so that people can access the majesty of the Cathedral and the services we have to offer to the wider community.”
You can access the 3D Virtual Tour of Lichfield Cathedral on their website. It also gives details of its online worship.
Our doors may be closed to save lives and help protect the NHS, but our commitment to serving and holding our nation in prayer continues.
All our cathedrals are providing daily worship – many are live streaming, or recording and uploading onto their YouTube channels or using Zoom.
Please visit their individual websites to find out how you can join them for worship and prayer.

The Cathedral is among the earliest centres of Christian worship in the UK. A cathedral was built to house his remains in 700 the first shrine is mentioned by the Venerable Bede in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People in 731. Pilgrims continued to come and a new, larger cathedral - the current Cathedral - was completed in the 14th Century. It subsequently underwent significant restoration by Sir Gilbert Scott in the 19th Century. It is the only medieval English cathedral with three spires and is the only cathedral in the UK to have been fortified with walls and a moat, traces of which remain in the landscape today.
Today, people continue to come in their thousands for all sorts of reasons: to admire the architecture, to explore the building and its towers, to pray, to ask, to be silent, to study, to worship.
The place of Chad continues to draw people to engage with some of the most fundamental questions of human and divine life. Visitors leave comments such as beautiful, peaceful, calm, wonderful atmosphere. On one level they are encountering a Christian holy house; on another, they are experiencing the transforming love of God.
We hope and pray that all our visitors will become pilgrims, not just visiting the shrine of Chad and leaving their prayers, but taking something with them on their own spiritual journey and making a real difference in the world in the name of Jesus Christ and the gospel of justice, reconciliation and peace.
When people come in great numbers, they realise, just like the earliest pilgrims, that they do not make this journey alone, but with friends, brothers and sisters in the Lord, and God himself journeying with God towards the loving heart of God.
The mission of Lichfield Cathedral is to live and proclaim the transforming love of God. Through the fullness of its life in the Spirit, it seeks to be a sign of friendship and freedom that God in Jesus Christ has given the whole world to enjoy. The Cathedral provides a glorious focus for worship and reaches out to communities across the Diocese, providing support to a wide range of missional and charitable activities. The Cathedral provides space for worship, community and cultural events. This follows a tradition that has been handed down through the generations since the first Cathedral was founded in AD 700 on the burial site of St Chad.

Lichfield Cathedral
Top choice in The Midlands & the Marches
Crowned by three dramatic towers, Lichfield Cathedral is a Gothic fantasy, constructed in stages from 1200 to 1350. The enormous vaulted nave is set slightly off line from the choir, creating a bizarre perspective when viewed from the west door, and carvings inside the cathedral still bear signs of damage caused by Civil War soldiers sharpening their swords.
Check schedules online for 45-minute tower tours climbing 160 steps for sweeping views from the central spire.
In the octagonal Chapter House, you can view the illuminated Chad Gospels, created around AD 730; an ornate Anglo-Saxon bas-relief known as the Lichfield Angel; and a faded but glorious medieval wall painting above the door.
The grand west facade positively bows under the weight of 113 statues of bishops, saints and kings of England. Be sure to stroll the delightful, once-fortified Cathedral Close, ringed with imposing 17th- and 18th-century houses.

Lichfield Cathedral has been a place for worship and learning for around 1300 years, and it continues in that tradition to this day. Lichfield Cathedral is the only medieval three spired Cathedral in the UK, and is a treasured landmark in the heart of England. It is one of the oldest places of Christian worship, and the burial place of the great Anglo Saxon missionary Bishop, St Chad. This magnificent building has a rich history, reflected in its architecture and treasures. As a place of great beauty, it continues to inspire and encourage all who visits it as tourists, pilgrims or worshippers. We are committed to the daily offering of worship and prayer to God, and offer spiritual nourishment and welcome all who come on their own journey of search and discovery. The Cathedral is situated in a picturesque close, one of the best preserved in the country. In addition to daily services, the Cathedral also acts as a stunning venue for a range of events including concerts, gala dinners, festivals, awards ceremonies, performances, debates, educational forums and more.

Guildhall - The Main Hall
The Tudor Cafe - Bore Street The building on the left:- This is Donegal House, which is also the present home of the Lichfield Arts Society. Click through [ HERE ] for their wide programme of events Welcome to a virtual tour of Lichfield through these pages where we set out to give you, as a visitor to our city, a flavour of the city itself, it's history, culture and events that occur regularly over the calendar year. You may progress from page to page via the links at the bottom of each page, or if you have specific questions, you may follow the index links that will appear above. As each place is described, if there is a web page for that site, it will be linked so that you may learn more about it from that site - then please feel free to come back and progress further. Where better to start a tour than from the Tourist Information Office, where they can book your accommodation, and give or send you information about places to see around our city. If you click [ HERE ] , you will be taken to their web site to learn more of what they offer. Meanwhile, their telephone number is: 01543 256611. Tourist Information Office opening hours: Monday to Saturday 9.30am - 3.30pm. The Tourist Office is now housed at St Mary's Heritage Centre in the Market Place and picture on City Centre . Donegal House pictured, is a Georgian style building and from time to time entertains local art exhibitions and charity sale offices on the ground floor on the left. When you have visited the Donegal House, you can go next door, to the building on the right, the Tudor Cafe, believed to have been built in 1501, and read up on some of the literature you have obtained. The cafe serves light meals and also specialises in chocolate creations not helpful to those intent on dieting. Upstairs there are antiques to see and buy in plenty, and worthy of a visit if only to see the upper rooms of this interesting old building. The Guilhall - Bore Street Before we leave this area, we should make mention of the Guildhall, which is the building to its left and which appears to have been the centre of law enforcement at some time in the past, and where you can visit the cells where prisoners were kept, at the rear of the ground floor, probably before being sentenced to be burned at the stake in the market square. There has been a building on this site since 1387 and the present building dates from a substantial re-construction in 1846. Outside here, George V was proclaimed king, and it has seen Queen Victoria at least twice. Today you may find the old civic meeting rooms hired out to local fairs or to market people to sell their wares.
