Mick Whelan, general secretary of Aslef, on a picket line at Euston station in London.

Aslef says more train strikes likely as drivers’ pay row continues

Ahead of 24-hour action union chief is gloomy about prospect of agreement in this month’s talks

Passengers on Britain’s railways should expect more strikes to follow the current round of industrial action within months, the boss of the train drivers’ union Aslef has warned ahead of a third day of disruption amid a simmering row over pay.

Mick Whelan, the general secretary of Aslef, said the union was scheduled to enter negotiations this month with some rail operators over future pay levels, and that a failure to strike a deal would mean it would look to launch a fresh round of industrial action to run alongside the current dispute.

He added that this was likely, as the current breakdown in talks over a pay agreement for drivers for the last two years would make it hard to strike any future agreement.

The union leader was talking ahead of the third and final day of rolling strikes carried out by the union on Monday, which is expected to close most of London’s commuter lines because of the 24-hour action carried out by Aslef members.

On Friday and Saturday, the union carried out action on the other parts of the network, causing widespread disruption for travellers.

The industrial action is the latest in an almost two-year dispute over pay between the union and rail companies, which has resulted in a series of strikes that have completely shut down the network.

Union officials are due to begin a fresh round of talks with some rail operators from this month, and others throughout the year, which would be aimed at reaching an agreement over pay levels for the next two years.

Whelan said: “The reality is, we are going to ask for a pay rise, they are going to say: ‘We can’t give you a pay rise if we haven’t been able to settle the previous two years,’ but they are not going to settle for the previous two years, so what are we going to do?

“We don’t want another dispute but at this moment in time, it is very much heading along that line again.”

He said this would probably lead to “further action” that could run in tandem with the current dispute, with the union having to ballot separately and secure a separate mandate. However, this would probably still be months away as the talks would need to conclude and then go through various union committees before reaching ballot stage.

There seems no prospect of an end to the current dispute between rail companies and Aslef, with Whelan conceding that drivers were “in it for the long haul”.

Last year, Aslef rejected a deal from operators through the Rail Delivery Group, the body that represents all rail companies, which would have led to drivers’ salaries increasing to £65,000 for a four-day week.

after newsletter promotion

Talks have completely stalled, with Aslef’s last meeting with the RDG coming in April last year. It said its last meeting with the rail minister Huw Merriman was in January 2023.

Whelan said: “We don’t want to be here, we don’t want to be standing on picket lines, losing money. We want a better, safer, cleaner railway.”

A RDG spokesperson said: “Nobody wins when industrial action impacts people’s lives and livelihoods, and we will work hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers.

“We want to resolve this dispute, but the Aslef leadership need to recognise that hard-pressed taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54m a week just to keep services running post Covid. We continue to seek an agreement with the Aslef leadership and remain open to talks to find a solution to this dispute.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “Aslef is the only rail union continuing to strike, targeting passengers and preventing their own members from voting on the pay offer that remains on the table.”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train

author image

German teenager Lasse Stolley, who pays £8,500 a year to live on a train.

Uch . TRAINS. They’re a necessary evil in many of our lives. Horrible big tin cans full of smelly people that never turn up on time and make you late for everything. The less time spent on them the better. At least for most of us in the UK, anyway.

Not so for digital nomad Lasse Stolley. This German teenager can’t get enough of them. He’s not a trainspotter, though. He’s more of a train squatter .

Okay, ‘squatter’ isn’t really accurate. While the 17-year-old does indeed live on trains, he does so entirely legally. And with a surprising amount of comfort.

Lasse travels 600 miles a day throughout Germany aboard Deutsche Bahn trains. He travels first class, sleeps on night trains, has breakfast in DB lounges and takes showers in public swimming pools and leisure centres, all using his unlimited annual railcard.

The self-employed coder technically has no fixed abode and appears to really enjoy his unusual way of life, something which he chronicles regularly on his blog, Life on the Train .

A close-up of a German train at a platform

Embarking on an unusual journey

‘I’ve been living on the train as a digital nomad for a year and a half now,’ Lasse told Business Insider recently. ‘At night I sleep on the moving Intercity Express (ICE) train and during the day I sit in a seat, at a table and work as a programmer, surrounded by many other commuters and passengers. I travel from one end of the country to the other. I’m exploring the whole of Germany.’

‘I decided to live on a train when I was 16 years old. My school days were behind me and the whole world was open to me. So in the summer of 2022, I decided to give in to my wanderlust, leave my parents’ house in Schleswig-Holstein behind and embark on a huge adventure.’

‘If I feel like travelling to the sea, I take the train north in the morning. If I long for the hustle and bustle of the big city, then I look for a connection to Berlin or Munich. Or I take the express train to the Alps for a hiking trip.’

‘I use the app to organise the next connection in the evening and sleep while I race along the tracks towards my destination. I don’t have a place to retreat to. My home is the train.’

‘The early months were tough and I had to learn a lot about how it all worked. Everything was different than how I’d imagined.’

German teenager Lasse Stolley smiling at the camera.

Costs, overnights and The Parent Question

Lasse says that, all things considered, it costs him around €10,000 (£8,500) a year to live the way he does.

‘I have a lot of freedom and can decide every day where I want to go, whether it’s to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea. I’m completely flexible.’

He’s forced to keep on the ball, though. You know how it is with trains. Even the unsurprisingly much more efficient German rail system. ‘Every night I have to make sure that I catch the night train and sometimes I have to reschedule very quickly because it suddenly doesn’t arrive.’

What do Lasse’s mum and dad think of his decision? ‘I had to do a lot of convincing,’ he says. Once he’d done that convincing, his parents checked out the legal side of it and agreed. They helped him sell off the majority of his possessions and now fully back their son’s decision.

A German train pulling into a station.

Keeping luggage to a minimum

Luggage is, obviously, something of an issue. Lasse has to travel light.

‘The most important thing is my laptop and my noise-cancelling headphones, which at least give me a little privacy on the train.’

‘An important aspect of minimalism on the train is the reduction of material possessions,’ Lasse says. ‘Since the available space is very limited, you have to choose carefully what you really need. It means getting rid of unnecessary items and limiting yourself to the bare essentials.’

‘The challenge of not accumulating more and more things is a central component of minimalist living. Especially with a backpack, you quickly reach a space limit.’

German teenager Lasse Stolley smiling for the camera.

Reflecting on an hectic 18 months

‘This life means a pretty restless existence. To switch off, I just look out the window and watching the scenery. That calms me down a lot. Then I just let my thoughts wander.’

‘My favourite route leads through the Middle Rhine Valley between Mainz and Bonn. Here the trains always travel very slowly along the river. It’s a beautifully picturesque route that stretches at the foot of the vineyards. The view outside is wonderful.’

Last month, Lasse worked out that he’d travelled a total of over 500,000 kilometres (310,000 miles) since he started living on the train – the number will now, of course, be even higher.

‘I don’t know how much longer I want to travel through Germany and wake up somewhere different every day, though,’ he says.

London travel news LIVE: Nine Tube stations closed as TSSA staff strike

A strike by TSSA Tube staff today has seen nine London Underground stations forced to close this evening.

They are Waterloo, Bermondsey, Caledonian Road, Manor House, Mornington Crescent, Southwark, Russell Square, Oval, and Regent’s Park.

Customer service managers, responsible for managing stations, have been on strike since midnight.

TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Our Customer Service Manager members are united and determined to take strike action this week in defence of their terms and conditions.

“This strike could have been avoided if London Underground had negotiated with us in good faith. Instead, we have been left in a position where London Underground is still unable to explain the impact of its ‘Stations Changes’ proposals.

“We cannot allow the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms and conditions to stand unchallenged, that is why our members are taking strike action this week.”

We are bringing you live updates throughout the day.

When are the next train strikes? Latest on industrial action

When are the next train strikes? Latest on industrial action

Three Tube stations closed amid TSSA strike

Three Tube stations have had to shut because of the “unavailability of station staff” amid the TSSA strike which has seen customer service managers walk out in protest.

The stations forced to shut are:

  • Caledonian Road
  • Russell Square

Minor delays to open part of Northern line

There are currently minor delays between Kennington and Morden southbound only while TfL fixes a faulty train at Morden.

This is on top of the planned closure we told you about earlier - see below.

Minor delays to Central line

There are currently minor delays between Leytonstone and Epping due to an earlier faulty train at Epping - good service on the rest of the line.

London Waterloo disruption cleared

South Western Railway trains between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction were disrupted early this morning because of overrunning engineering works.

This has now cleared up.

Good service on all Tube lines despite strike

TfL is currently reporting a good service on all Tube lines - except the Northern line where there is currently planned engineering works taking place.

This is despite the TSSA strike today, which is seeing Customer Service Managers walkout until midnight.

Part closure on Tram

There is currently no service between Wellesley Road / George Street and Beckenham Junction / Elmers End / New Addington.

Eastbound trams are operating from Wimbledon to Wellesley Road, and westbound trams are operating from George Street to Wimbledon.

This planned closure will be in place until April 24.

Part closure on Northern line

There will be no service between Golders Green and Edgware until April 11. This is because of planned engineering works.

Why are TSSA members striking?

Many Customer Service Managers “are extremely concerned about the company’s ‘Stations Changes’ proposals, with potential changes to their terms and conditions, job role and location.”.

“We cannot allow the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms and conditions to stand unchallenged, that is why our members are taking strike action this week. We’ll see how quickly London Underground get back round the negotiating table when they see the strength and determination of our members.”

TSSA Tube strike begins today

Customer service managers, responsible for managing stations, have been on strike since midnight and will stay away from work until just before midnight tonight.

As drivers are not part of this walkout, it is hoped that it will not impact Tube services too severely.

Biden announces plans to address Baltimore port closure and help workers after deadly bridge collapse

After visiting the site of the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Friday, President Joe Biden said that his administration is taking swift action to try to ease the disruption at Baltimore's port and help workers and small businesses affected by the port closure.

After an aerial tour of the site, Biden said that the federal government will provide more than $8 million in grant funds to make infrastructure improvements to the port at Baltimore's Sparrows Point — an area unaffected by the bridge collapse — so it can take on more ships.

The president also announced that his administration would provide grants to workers affected by the pause in port operations and said the Small Business Administration would offer low-interest loans for small businesses impacted by the incident last week.

"I’m here to say your nation has your back," Biden said. "The damage is devastating and our hearts are still breaking," he continued, noting that six workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge lost their lives.

"I’ve come here to grieve with you," he said, flanked by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and other Maryland and Baltimore officials. "It’s not the same, but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul."

Biden reiterated that he wants Congress to pass funding to cover the entire cost of constructing a new bridge. He also said that, so far, two small channels have been cleared for ships helping to clear the wreckage and noted the tentative timeline for reopening the port announced Thursday by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Army Corps of Engineers expects “to open a limited access channel for barge container service and some vessels that move automobiles and farm equipment by the end of April” and “restore the port to normal capacity by the end of May,” the White House said.

In addition to the aerial tour, Biden received an operational update on response efforts from the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers and was expected to meet personally with the families of the six workers who died.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early on the morning of March 26 when a cargo ship crashed into a support pillar. The remains of two people who were killed have been recovered, four others are presumed dead and two people who fell into the water survived.

Biden addressed the disaster during remarks in the hours following the collapse, saying that the White House would send “all the federal resources they need” and that they would rebuild the port. He also said that he intended for the federal government to pay the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge.

Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young sent a letter to congressional leaders on Friday asking them to authorize "a 100 percent Federal cost share for rebuilding the bridge."

“To the people of Baltimore, I want to say: We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as takes. And like [Moore] said, you’re Maryland tough, you’re Baltimore strong, and we’re going to get through this together,” Biden said during his remarks last week. “And I promise: We’re not leaving.”

The National Economic Council has also convened the administration's Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to coordinate federal efforts to support affected industries in the aftermath of the collapse, the White House announced last week.

“We are much better equipped to mitigate supply chain disruptions than we were just a few years ago, thanks to increased coordination across the supply chain and new efforts to strengthen both our physical and digital infrastructure,” Buttigieg said in a statement.

Also last week, the Department of Transportation announced $60 million in emergency relief funds to go toward rebuilding the bridge. The White House said it would serve as a "down payment" for initial costs.

In 2023, the Baltimore port near the bridge, a key shipping hub and source of jobs, “handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion,” Moore announced in February. The port also generated more than 15,000 direct jobs, “with nearly 140,000 jobs linked to port activities,” he said in the statement.
