Americana Folk Singer-Songwriter Lynne Hanson’s new single “Hip Like Cohen” out today plus announces new album and tour dates

lynne hanson tour

Ottawa, Canada-based, award-winning singer-songwriter Lynne Hanson is set to release her ninth studio album,  Ice Cream in November , on April 22, 2022. The independent release on Hanson’s Panda Cave Records marks a bit of an evolution for her. While not abandoning her Americana roots,  Ice Cream in November  continues the sonic shift that permeated her 2020 release,  Just Words .

“I don’t want to keep making the same record over and over again,” Hanson says. “Getting outside of my artistic comfort zone and trying new things is what keeps things fresh for me at this point in my career. Over the course of the last three or four years, I think I’ve grown more adventurous with the kinds of songs I’m writing and the production approaches when recording them. I think this is one of the reasons that I still get excited about writing songs and making records. On the new album, there are definitely production techniques and sounds that you would never have found on some of my earlier recordings.”

This continued musical exploration lends a more contemporary sound to  Ice Cream in November , one that incorporates synthesizers, ethereal guitar pads, and even the odd electronic drum track, all co-existing quite beautifully alongside Hanson’s trademark whiskey-soaked alto. Co-produced and engineered by Hanson and multi-instrumentalist Blair Michael Hogan, and mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated sound engineer Phil Shaw Bova, the album was recorded by Hanson and Hogan in their respective home studios over a two-month period in late summer 2021.

Hanson plans three singles from the album in advance of its release. To whet fans’ appetites early, the first single, “Shadowland,” a surfy, Hank Marvin-Esque guitar and spaghetti western song, was released in October of 2021. Americana Highways  premiered the track and video and wrote, “With shades of ‘Rawhide’… this song, with its music and its story, will stick with you.”

The second single, the fresh-but-retro “Hip Like Cohen,” is set for release on February 25th. The song and video premiered earlier that week at  Americana UK . “Hundred Mile Wind,” an Americana stunner and the third single, will be released on March 25th, and  Americana Highways  will be premiering the song several days before that.

If the disparate sounds of the three singles didn’t already share the memo, the songs on  Ice Cream in November  cover a broad range of genres. “In on a Wing” and “One of Those Days” have an indie-rock feel to them, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that are unpredictably clever. Longtime fans will be happy to know the Hanson trademark red dirt is alive and well in tracks like “Birds Without a Feather.” Listeners may find themselves hypnotized by the dreamy hooks of the title track, “Ice Cream in November,” or lost in thought at the questions posed in “Orion’s Belt”: “Like why do songbirds like to sing / Why quicksand isn’t quick at all / And space and time is a relative thing.” And while Hanson still touches on heartache, songs like “Dominoes” and “This Heart of Mine” have a lot more swagger than sorrow to them.

Hanson began touring with Hogan, an in-demand session musician, in February 2020, and the two began co-writing together in January of 2021. Nine of the 12 songs on  Ice Cream in November are Hanson/Hogan co-writes. The writing collaboration started when Hanson offered to add a vocal melody and lyrics to an instrumental piece Hogan had posted on social media. This song would eventually become the title track to the new album. “It was an entirely new process for me to have to not only co-write remotely but to develop lyrics and a vocal melody to a song structure that already existed,” says Hanson. “And, in some cases, I was working with chord progressions that may not have been what I would have chosen. It was challenging and liberating at the same time, and it really got me out of the writing funk I was in.” At some point during the writing and demo-ing process, the pair decided to record the album.

Hanson is no stranger to recording. Since 2006, she’s released eight studio albums – including  Heartbreak Song for The Radio , a multi-award-winning album which she co-produced as one half of The LYNNeS. But there’s a big difference between being in the studio and actually being responsible for capturing audio. “The idea of self-engineering my own album was terrifying,” says Hanson. “Prior to 2020, I had never even owned a single piece of recording equipment. So having a talent like Phil ready to mix and master the album gave me the confidence that we could actually do this ourselves.”

Hanson felt that her recording experience, paired with Hogan’s versatility as a musician, meant they could track the majority of the album themselves. The drums were another story, however. “We knew we wanted real drums on the album, and that was definitely above my pay grade to record properly, so we were really excited when Phil also agreed to lay down the drum tracks,” Hanson says. While they played the lion’s share of the instruments on the album, Hanson and Hogan also enlisted the help of a few other musician friends, some of whom include Peter Klaassen on upright bass, Steve Marriner (MonkeyJunk) on harmonica, Raphael Weinroth-Browne on cello, and Caroline Brooks (Good Lovelies) on backing vocals.

Not having the pressure of being on the clock in a commercial studio where time is money, Hanson had the freedom to experiment with arrangements, sounds, and instrumentation on every track. But there was also a downside to having no time limit. “With a home studio it’s possible to endlessly tinker with a song,” she says. “At one point I had to really hunker down and set deadlines and a schedule just to be able to get each song to the finish line. But all in all, I have to say that I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished with this album, both in terms of the songs themselves, as well as the quality of the production.”

Hanson plans to tour in spring and summer. Confirmed tour dates are listed below; fans should check her website and social media for more information.

Song Premiere: Lynne Hanson “Hundred Mile Wind”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Lynne Hanson’s song “Hundred Mile Wind,” from her forthcoming album Ice Cream in November .   Ice Cream in November will be available on April 22; the song is releasing on March 25.  The album was co-produced by Lynne Hanson and Blair Michael Hogan; mixed and mastered by Phil Shaw Bova; and was recorded by Hanson and Hogan in their home studios.

“Hundred Mile Wind” is Lynne Hanson on vocals and acoustic guitar; Blair Michael Hogan on electric guitars and melotron; Peter Klaassen on upright bass; Mikhail Laxton on backing vocals; and Phil Shaw Bova on drums, vibraphone and percussion.

We had a chance to chat with Lynne Hanson.  The song premiere is just below the interview.

Americana Highways: What prompted you to write this song? What was the inspiration behind it?

Lynne Hanson: The song was inspired by a windstorm I found myself in while on tour in the southern United States. On that particular day in Oklahoma, the winds reached 100 miles an hour, and I was almost blown off my feet at one point while filling up the tour van at a gas station. The dirt got into everything, and at times we couldn’t see anything but dusty air. Definitely not something one forgets, and after telling the story a few times, that line in the chorus popped into my head so I wrote it down. When I was looking for images for the cover art for a single I was going to put out, I came across all the photos I had taken on that tour, including a bunch of abandoned cars out in the desert and an old abandoned gas station. Those images definitely helped create a backstory to the characters in the song.

AH:  How did this song come together when you wrote it? What was the songwriting process like?

LH: This song is a co-write with Ottawa-based songwriter, Jessica Pearson. I’d been doing a lot of virtual writing sessions in early 2021 due to the various pandemic lockdowns, and our session was one of my first “in-person” writes, as we were able to sit down together in my backyard in May 2021. I’d already started “Hundred Mile Wind.” This was one of those collaborations where I was able to use another writer to move the lyrics forward by talking through the ideas out loud together. For me, a song can sometimes get stuck at half-done, and having another writer in the room helps to get the song over the finish line.

AH: When you recorded this song, what kind of vibe were you going for? Did it end up sounding like you expected it to or did it come out different from what you thought it would be?

LH: I wanted the song to be as gritty as the Oklahoma air that inspired it, and it’s definitely one of the more Americana sounding tracks on the record. The drums set the tone on this track, and we had Phil Shaw Bova track them remotely, so our instruction was to lean away from a folk-type treatment and to avoid a straight up train beat. We reinforced the galloping-type feel with a strummed acoustic guitar, and then sort of glued the whole thing together with a spooky guitar pad that runs under the whole mix. I have to admit to being a big fan of the tremolo Gretsch part, which gives it a real dark, almost spaghetti western feel.

AH: What do you hope listeners get from the song? What do you want its message to be?

LH: The song is really about a couple of badass characters who fall for each other. The lead character thinks she’s tough enough to handle her lover, but ultimately she blinks in the end and ends up alone. I think there’s a little bit of me in the third verse when I sing, “I put words on a page cause they don’t talk back / it’s a one way street and I like it like that.” Ultimately, I hope listeners can “see” the same dusty, lonely, star-crossed characters that I had in my own mind when I wrote the lyrics.

AH: How does this song fit in among the songs on your forthcoming album?

LH: The upcoming album has a lot of variety on it, and this is definitely one of the more outlaw country tracks. The song and the production are probably more typical of songs off my 2014 release, “River of Sand,” though with a few more quirks. I think the poetry of the lyrics is consistent with the rest of the album, with this song showing off the grittier side of my songwriting.

Great Dark Wonder - Written for and by fans of the fantastic Canadian music and arts scene...

Lynne Hanson: Live in Alexandria, VA

Lynne Hanson

Following our recent excursion to VA to see Allison Russell in concert, Team GDW found ourselves back in this southern state just five days later, this time to catch up with another one of our favorite Canadian artists.  Embarking upon her first international tour since being sidelined due to the pandemic (like many of her contemporaries), Ottawa, ON Americana artist Lynne Hanson returned to the live music circuit, with a stop in Alexandria to perform at ‘Concerts at The Sevareid House’ – a stunning mid-century modern home perfectly suited for Lynne’s ‘ porch music with a little red dirt .’

We last caught a brief glimpse of Lynne back in the summer of 2019, during the Home County Music and Arts Festival in London, ON, where she accompanied headliner Dave Gunning on the main stage for his finale, and after professing their shared love for ‘hanging songs’ and the ‘cinematic,’ delivered a rousing performance of his track, “The Long Black Veil.” Fast forward back to the present, we were delighted to encounter Lynne once more, who, along with guitarist, co-writer, and touring companion Blair Hogan, entertained an engaged and music-starved crowd at Sevareid House with an incredible 80 minutes of music.

Following her opening track, “Hold My Breath” (released as a standalone single last September), Lynne was eager to address the room about finally being back on the road and performing. “It hasn’t been very long since we’ve been playing live shows in front of live people, and every time I play the first song, I get goosebumps,” she confessed. “It’s a weird and crazy thing. I was playing 150 shows a year and going all over the place, and it was very hard to hit stop.”  Lynne would add that she missed being around people, who often stimulated her songwriting creativity, and would share a story of her firsthand experience of being blown away by the Oklahoma wind – itself, the impetus for a new, unreleased track titled “100 Mile Wind” – one of many new tunes set to appear on her upcoming album, “Ice Cream In November,” scheduled for release on April 22 nd .

Lynne Hanson

Sharing tales about coping during the pandemic, about ‘k-pop,’ and sobriety, Lynne also injected a little humor (at her own expense), with the Freudian slip of a distinct Canadian phrase. “The good thing about playing live shows again is I get a work out, changing all these guitars,” she started. “When I was home, I’d just sit on a couch, watching Netflix – I should probably not say the name out loud, Eh?”  Murmurs of “Eh” floated from the back of the room. “Oh, I said Eh! I did it. Darn it,” Lynne joked (Blair smirking too). “I have no idea that I’m doing it.”  She would also take time to discuss her most recent album, “Just Words,” and how the touring embargo meant that songs from this album had little opportunity to be shared live. Regular readers may recall that GDW contributing writer Douglas McLean declared this his favorite Canadian album in 2020, and fortunately for us, Lynne and Blair would perform a selection of tracks, including “Hearts Fade” and “Hemingway’s Songbird” from this outstanding album.

“I have to admit up until we crossed the border, I believe there was a part of me that felt it wasn’t happening,” Lynne offered following “Hearts Fade.” “So, it was amazing to just cross the border, and I’m like, ‘here we are, we’re in America.’ And then we got to see some convoy people today.”  Having endured such protesters around the Washington beltway for over a week now, the locals in the room sympathized via laughter.  “I just thought we’d get that out of the way here,” Lynne continued. “We’re from Ottawa. I’m sorry, so sorry.”  “We got three weeks of this,” added Blair. “It’s not often we do something that influences you guys. Normally, it’s so much the other way around.”  “It was so embarrassing,” Lynne stated. “Of course, it happens before we start going out on tour. So now, we’re going to the UK and they’re gonna look at us, and we’re gonna be in France, and they’re just gonna shoot us!”  As the merriment from the room subsided, Lynne would precede the performance of “Clean Slate” with some commentary about being good neighbors, and questioning the general lack of civility over the last few years.

Lynne Hanson

Sharing the new title track from her upcoming album, the mention of ice cream quickly developed into a food-related discussion, and questions about both the Canadian and Thanksgiving traditions. “I discovered candied yams here in America,” Lynne recalled. “I was like, ‘you put marshmallows in sweet potatoes? What is wrong with you?’  And then I had them, and I’m like ‘oh yeah’.”  Another new track, “Orion’s Belt” would be performed, before Lynne turned on her comedic charm once again.  “I love to binge view. Commercials suck, and also waiting until next week also sucks, so I once watched five seasons of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ in five days,” she confessed. “It was like 60 hours of a motorcycle gang show. It was very intense.”  The crowd were drawn to her every word at this time, patiently waiting for the story to unfold. “And I’d be on the couch, and I’d be like ‘sweetheart, shall we watch another one?’ And the cat would blink twice for yes.”  The room erupted with laughter once more.  “So, I just kept going.”

And true to her words, both Lynne and Blair would indeed ‘just keep going,’ closing the evening with a strong three track succession of “River Of Sand” (from her 2014 same-titled album), the recent ‘quirky’ single, “Hip Like Cohen,” and the finale, a rip-roaring version of the surf-rock inspired (and “cinematic”) recent cut, “Shadowland” – complete with eager audience participation and some simply stellar fretwork from Blair, who had given his Telecaster a solid workout for the entire show.  Following their bows, a well-earned standing ovation convinced Lynne and Blair to stick around for an encore (no ‘leave the stage’ theatrics necessary), and after pulling the cable from her guitar, the duo sent the audience home with an outstanding unplugged version of “Gotta Have Rain.”

This incredible evening of music at Sevareid House proved the perfect climax to a Friday night, and brought some much-need relief to our knowledge of a pending blast of winter that was about to hit the east coast over the next 24 hours.  But hey, come rain or shine (or snow), it would be live music that once again provided us all a moment of enjoyment, relaxation, and escapism from the craziness going on in the world around us.  Newspapers may seek to depress us with daily coverage of Covid-19, politics, and war, but once again, such is the healing power of live music that we allow ourselves to set real-world problems on the shelf for one evening, at the very least.

Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, Lynne Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine, blue-sky ballad to a full-on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Her hard-living music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s own Queen of Americana.” And while her deep, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart.

Hanson has released nine studio albums along with two books of poetry over her 18-year solo career. Along the way, she’s won two Canadian Folk Music Awards, as well as the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award. She’s known for her high-energy, roots guitar-driven live performances, whether playing solo or with her band, the Good Intentions, and has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming.

Just A Poet is the tenth studio album from Ottawa, Canada-based songwriter and is due out May 24th via Panda Cave Records.

“Just a poet lost for words, springtime without the birds, adrift at sea with just a single oar,” Hanson sings in the title track off her latest album Just A Poet . The award-winning songwriter has again teamed up with producer Jim Bryson, who produced her 2020 release, Just Words , and the result is an album of sounds and songs with a distinctly indie flavor, tied together by well-crafted lyrics and her trademark whiskey-soaked alto.

After almost 20 years of touring and releasing music, the songs and sounds on Just a Poet are as authentic as they come, delivered with a splash of grit and the confidence of an artist who knows who she is.

Today Glide is excited to premiere the standout track “Just A Little Bit,” a twist on your classic break-up song that finds Hanson laying out smart lyrics that capture the downward spiral of a relationship while presenting them in a way that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Her cool vocal delivery meshes wonderfully with a steady groove, a slight guitar twang, and gorgeous chorus harmonies that leave this song lingering in your mind long after listening. It’s refreshing to hear the way Hanson marries Americana and country blues with just a touch of R&B groove and a slight pop sensibility in the classical kind of way to make for the kind of song that is sure to grab the attention of listeners well beyond the Canadian border.

Listen to the track and read our interview with Hanson below…

What is the story behind this song? How did it come together? What is it about?

This song is a co-write with my guitar player, Blair Michael Hogan. He sent me an instrumental demo and tasked me with developing a vocal melody and lyrics for the track. He felt the song sounded a little like Bahamas, but I heard more of a Bonnie Raitt influence, so I really pushed it to have a bluesier feel. The song is definitely a break-up song, but with more of a “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” vibe as opposed to “I Will Always Love You.” The main character in the song is mostly fed up with how things are going in the relationship, and while they know it’s going to hurt a little, they are ready for the end.

Are there any lyric lines that you really love or that really speak to you? What do you feel makes them resonate?

I used a fair bit of imagery when I was writing the lyrics for this song, so there are a few lines that are a lot more show than tell. For example, I sing, “All the words you say feel a little purple / tired of this story gotta skip out on this call.” It’s just a fancy way of saying I think you’re full of sh**, and it’s time to stop believing all your lies and break up with you. I think the song is ultimately relatable because most of us have been at that point in a relationship we knew it was over but our heart wasn’t quite ready to let go. This song is really a pep talk to just bite the bullet and end it because, “Heartbreak hurts but it never killed anyone.”

If listeners can take away one thing from having heard this song, what do you hope that is?

Breakups aren’t fun, and I think most of us at one point in our lives have delayed a break up to avoid the hurt that comes with ending it. Whether you’re the one doing the leaving, or the one being left, it’s never fun to call it a day. But new beginnings start with endings, so holding onto a relationship beyond its expiry date is just a waste of time. Ultimately, I hope that listeners feel empowered listening to this song and can relate to the strength that’s needed to free themselves from an unhealthy situation. At the same time, I hope a few of the lines generate a smile or two, as the song doesn’t take itself too seriously.

How does this song fit in among the others on the forthcoming album? How is it similar or different?

On my last album, I ventured into some fairly quirky territory, both in terms of the songwriting as well as the production. On this forthcoming record, I really wanted to return to my Americana roots and create songs that people could see themselves in. And while the overall sound of the album is cohesive thanks to the production approach we took, there’s a fair amount of variety as far as the songs themselves, running the gamut from blues to country to folk. This song definitely leans a little heavier towards country-blues compared to some of the other songs. That being said, I’ve been a huge fan of songwriters like Patty Griffin and Jason Isbell over the years, and the use of imagery and clever prose, or at least the attempt at it, is what makes this song consistent with the rest of the album.

If you could use only three words to describe your music, what would they be and why?

Three words that capture the essence of my music would be “authentic red dirt,” because I think there’s a real grittiness to my songs, both in terms of the lyrical content as well as the way I approach my sound. It’s about chasing “capital T truth” and not shying away from real emotions, and packaging that up in sound that’s rooted in simplicity rather than being over-produced.

Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, Lynne Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine, blue sky ballad to a full on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, Lynne Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine, blue sky ballad to a full on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Her hard living music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s own Queen of Americana.” And while her deep, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart.

A two-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner, Hanson is known for her high energy, roots guitar driven live performances, whether playing solo or with her band the Good Intentions. She has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming.

She will release her tenth album “Just A Poet” in the Spring of 2024.

Lynne Hanson announces UK tour dates

lynne hanson tour

Award-winning Canadian Americana songwriter Lynne Hanson has announced a UK tour for October, as a duo with guitarist Blair Michael Hogan (who you can see in action in the wonderful clip below). The two-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner will begin in Leamington Spa on October 4th, performing a total of 16 dates before finishing up in Oxford at the Jericho Tavern.

Described as “too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country”, Hanson has been compared to artists such as Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, and is known for her high-energy, roots guitar-driven live performances. As we once put it, “on stage Hanson has a wonderful charm and disarming sense of humour … a spontaneity and honesty that enchants.”

The prolific songwriter has released eight studio albums along with two books of poetry over her 17-year solo career.  She is an international touring artist, and has appeared at leading international festivals including Take Root (Netherlands), Glasgow Americana (Scotland), Maverick Festival (UK), Kerrville Folk Festival (US), and Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada). She’s toured as support for Grammy-nominated artists like Gretchen Peters, Steve Forbert, and Albert Lee.

Full details and advance tickets are available via her official website which you can find here .

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
