What are hashtags on Instagram?

A hashtag is used on several social media platforms. It usually consists of a word or phrase with a # symbol preceding it.

Hashtags are used to identify digital content on a specific topic, and ultimately, helps users find relevant content related to that hashtag containing the word or phrase.

Specifically on Instagram, hashtags help sort out photos specific to the word or phrase.

You can find images and videos by looking up a hashtag and see all the photos and images that other people posted with the same hashtag.

Why use travel Instagram hashtags?

Using travel hashtags on Instagram as a travel influencer or a blogger is a must if you want your photos and videos if you want more than just your followers to see your content.

Without using hashtags, a small percentage of your current followers will see your post.

When you use hashtags, then both followers and non-followers can see your post.

Hashtags can improve the reach of your photo by 30-40%!

The more reach you get from hashtags, then Instagram will reward you by showing your post to more existing followers and vice verse.

If you can also use hashtags in a very specific way. For example, if you use #sarchetrit_nyc for all your NYC posts, then your followers can see all your posts from NYC in one location.

There are three spots to put hashtags although people like to argue about which is the best spot.

At the Bottom of the Caption

The best spot according to Instagram is to put hashtags right in the caption at the bottom.

1st Comment of a Post

Some people argue that this clutters up their caption. Thus, those people will put it in the 1st comment meaning they post their post, then copy and paste hashtags in the first comment.

However, people say that putting hashtags in the comment limits the reach on posts.

You can test out what works best for you– hashtags in the caption or in the comments– or don’t over think it. Just post them in the caption.

Within Stories

Aside from your in-feed posts, you can use up to 10 hashtags in your Instagram story to widen the reach of your story.

How many travel hashtags for Instagram should you use?

The Instagram Creators account says to specifically use 3-5 hashtags but from personal experience and seeing what other travel bloggers do, 3-5 is too little.

On the other hand, this Adspresso study suggested that 11 is a sweet spot for hashtags.

I personally use about 15-18 because that works for me so you can test out what works for your accounts.

Focusing on the number is not the most important factor for hashtags to increase the exposure of your post though.

What matters is how often a hashtag has been used or how popular it is because if a hashtag has been used too many times such as #travel or #explore, then your posts won’t be seen under that hashtag page. It defeats the purpose to use such a large hashtag especially if you’re a smaller account.

What are the best hashtags to grow my account?

The best hashtags to grow your account are going to be ones that are very specific to your photo and also account size.

Again, if you have less than 5k followers and use a hashtag like #travel, which has been used 610 million times, your post will quickly disappear among other posts.

As a result, if you are a small to medium sized account, make sure to use that aren’t used as much so your posts will actually be seen in the hashtag page.

Pro Tip: If you use travel hashtags for Instagram reels, make sure they are specific as possible! I’ve noticed that you don’t need as many hashtags for Instagram reels as you need for in-feed posts too so test it out to see what works for your account.

What are some good travel hashtags to use?

As we mentioned above, the best travel hashtags are the ones that are really specific to your travel niche and your account.

A good hashtag strategy for Instagram is to 7-10 Low Competition hashtags, 4-6 Medium Competition ones and 1-2 High Competition hashtags.

Even if you are not an influencer yet (or you never plan to be!), coming up with a good hashtag strategy will help you connect to this world a little better. Once you’ve got your own system down it is super easy, too! You want to keep it unique so it won’t get buried in between other’s posts, and a good way to do that is to use a variation of topics. It is said between 5-15 is the optimal number of hashtags to have in your post, but you can add up to 30 if you feel inclined. You will want to use some referring to travel, some others specific to the setting your in, some specific to solo/couple/family travel, and lastly your destination. 

Creating a Hashtag Strategy:

The thing I like to do when adding travel hashtags to my post, is having a mixture of three different levels of hashtags. 

Level 1: Very Popular Hashtags –

These are hashtags that are super popular and while it is unlikely you will show up at the top of that hashtags feed, if you do get at the top of the hashtag’s explore page you will get an explosion of likes and followers. I have had the forune of having this happen early in my Instagram and it really jump-started my account.

Level 2: Popular But Doable:

The next level of hashtags are ones that are used often (10,000 – 100,000 times) but not the super popular hashtags. These are great because they reach a good size audience and you have a chance to end up at the top of that travel hashtags explore page. 

Level 3: Niche Hashtags

I love niche travel hashtags because honestly, these are often my most engaged followers. While the numbers on these hashtags are not huge the followers you gain are so engaged. I once got hundreds of followers because I used the #disneybeachclubresort while I was in Disney World. It only had about 1000 people who used the hashtag, but those looking to stay at the resort were so engaged with my content.

Top Hashtags

These may seem a little basic to you, but these are must-haves in your travel posts. Trying variations is often a good idea. For example, #travelers will probably get your post more attention than #travel because it’s unique. Like we said above, you will want to pair your travel hashtags with some tags more specific to you as well but we will start here!

Post When Your Users Are Most Active

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one’s online to see your Instagram post of it, did it even happen?

Giggles aside, you get the point.

It doesn’t matter if you have the most slammin’ travel shot there ever was and used the top hashtags for travel photography known to humankind, if you’re not also making sure your people are online to see it.

Your goal is to post your content, with your best travel photography hashtags, at the times when users are most active. This is when users are most likely to engage with your posts.

The more users that engage with your post early on, the more people the Instagram algorithm will show your post to.

How do you know when to post?

If you have a creator or business account (and if you plan on being serious about your Instagram travel photography, you should) your Instagram account analytics will help you out. Learn how to set up a creator or business account.

• Head to your profile on the mobile app
• Tap the Insights button
• Tap “Total Followers”
• Scroll to the bottom of the page and find “Most Active Times”

If you converted your profile to a creator or business account recently, these analytics will only show insights for content posted after you converted.

In case you’re not able to access your Instagram analytics, a general rule  is that users are most active on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from the hours of 10 am to 2 pm.

We use all 30 travel photography hashtags on every post, except Reels posts.

For Reels, we recommend 15 or less hashtags to better directly target your traffic. However, you may use up to 30 hashtags on Reels as well.

We will group our travel photography hashtags below to make it easier for you to select the number of hashtags you want.

Instagram doesn’t like seeing repetitive behavior. When it sees too much repetitive behavior, the Instagram algorithm might construe you for a bot. Therefore too much use of the same, identical hashtags on every, single post for a prolonged period of time may lead to a shadowban. You do  not want that.

To avoid this, be sure to vary your traveling photography hashtags on each post.

How to best use travel hashtags on Instagram

If you’re reading this you are probably struggling with the ever-changing Instagram algorithm and it’s effecting your engagement and reach. You may be here to simply learn more. Well if its the former, then I think every travel account has felt this sting lately so I want to start by saying; do NOT worry, you are NOT alone!

Around three weeks ago I noticed a massive slump in impressions, mostly through hashtags as that is where I usually get around 50% of my reach. I put this down to a lot of people either going back to work or traveling for the summer so therefore being on their phones less. However, in the last few weeks I have noticed my reach increasing and getting between 5-11k impressions through hashtags alone! My most popular post hit 16.3k views just from hashtags! When I put some interest out on my Instagram stories asking if people would like to hear some tips, 99% of my followers said ‘yes please’, so I’m here to share. I’ll share some examples in screenshots too which are all from the past three weeks.

Some of you may already use some of these techniques and some may be new ideas, but the key is to just keep trying and seeing what works for you. Every account is different so the way your account is shared and viewed will always be different too. Don’t give up!

But first, the basics…

What is a hashtag?

On Instagram, a hashtag is a keyword or phrase used to categorise and easily group related content into one place. It is also used on other social media sites to link tweets, information, articles etc. but on Instagram it is used to categorise posts (photos, videos or reels) and stories.

Why do we use hashtags?

People use hashtags for many different reasons but for photographers or creators the main reason we use hashtags is to be noticed by other accounts, whether that may be fellow travellers who feel inspired by your photos and want to follow your journey or brands who may want to work with you. It’s a great way to gain a following and make sure your pictures are seen by more people. Hashtags are also a common way for travellers to research tips or find inspiration when they are due to travel to a new destination. You can also use hashtags to find comical content, memes, vital information, learn new things and so much more.

How do you use hashtags?

All you need is a # sign and a word/phrase. The hashtags are always clickable so whenever you click one you will instantly be taken to a page full of images of that topic. You can use up to 30 hashtags on any photo and I would recommend either adding them to your caption (after a few enter/return spaces so it doesn’t confuse the reader with your caption) or in your first comment. You cannot use special characters like full stops or exclamation marks in hashtags but numbers and underscores are okay.

‘Top’ page on hashtags

The aim of the hashtag game is to be seen on the ‘top’ page which shows the most popular images of that hashtag. When you first click on a hashtag you will be instantly taken to these ‘top’ results and then you can switch to ‘most recent’ at the top of the screen to see the content in chronological order. Being in the top 9-12 of the ‘top’ page will mean your content is seen by more people. On the online site, Insta only display the top nine images before they show the most recent.

Tip #1 – don’t use BIG hashtags.

Hashtags with tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of posts may seem like a good idea for more exposure but they are actually worse for attracting attention. For example #travel has 523 million posts on their page! This means a lot of content is going up every second and within seconds your post will be quickly lost in the digital crowd. Not only will it not stay visible for long in the ‘most recent’ section, but it is very unlikely that you will be seen in the top page of the bigger hashtags because of more competition. Sometimes you can get lucky with some hashtags with 1-10 million posts and I will usually try 3-4 of the bigger hashtags in this range if they are relevant to the photo or caption. I have been really lucky with #greece (37m) on two photos after posting many Greek photos and got 3-4k clicks on each post from that hashtag alone! But… it’s a risk.

HOW DID I GET THESE TOP 5 HASHTAG STATS?

I will explain at the end…

Tip #2 – use mostly MEDIUM hashtags

Hashtags with between 100k and 900k seem to work best for me. They aren’t over saturated with photos but are still getting enough attention to drive traffic. Hashtags under 100k can work too but if they are too small there may not be enough people actually checking these tags.

Tip #3 – use location hashtags

This is probably one of my favourite ones that gives me some of my best reach. When I personally go to a new destination, I always check hashtags to get some inspiration on where to visit and I guess other travellers will too. This is a great way for potential followers to see your work. Of my most popular recent posts, the majority of the best performing hashtags have been related to the destination.

Tip #4 – don’t be afraid to use the same hashtags

I’ve heard it time and time again, that using the same hashtags will flag as spam and isn’t good for your account but I’ve actually found the opposite to be true. Some hashtags I use often actually boost me to the top more regularly. Consistency is key here because if you use new hashtags for each photo and they are all very different themes, Instagram won’t know what kind of account you are and where to put you. I wouldn’t use the same exact hashtags each time, mix them up but definitely don’t be scared to have favourites, especially if it fits your brand.

Recently I used the same three hashtag for every photo and two weeks later, one of those hashtags is still showing four of my posts on the top page (on a 450k hashtag). My post from yesterday is also already on the top page for this so that makes five! The second showed two of my posts in the top and the third one showed none. So it just shows it won’t work for every hashtag but definitely worth trying!

I always make note of the ones that are continuously bumping me to the top.

Tip #5 – save hashtags in your phone under CATEGORIES

I know a lot of people have 2-4 sets of 30 hashtags saved in their phone to alternate, ready to just copy and paste into the photo but this means your not specifically tailoring the hashtags to your picture or caption.

I like to research different hashtags that match the sort of photos I usually post and find a group that work for each.

My notes look a little something like this (with many more options as I am always adding new ones as I find them but this example just gives you an idea):

(when I visit a new country and I know I will be posting a lot from there I also add certain hashtags categories based on the location)

So for example if I post a photo of me hiking in the Andes mountains in Peru, I would use a few location hashtags then grab a few of the hiking/nature or other relevant ones, some girly tags if I was in the picture plus some general travel ones and it would look something like this: #andesmountains #perutravel #visitperu #igersperu #southamericatrip #southamericatravel #hikingtrails #hikingbangers #mountaingirls #alpinebabes #hikingtheglobe #shetravels #girlstravel #femaletraveler #wanderlustgirls #travelcommunity #adventuregirls #doyoutravel and so on…

If the caption for this photo was focused on climate change for example, I would also add #climatechange #climatechangeisreal.

Tip #6 – use all 30 hashtags

You might as well use them all! Also, if you put the hashtags in the first comment, make sure to post the comment straight away. I always write up the hashtags at the end of the caption then cut, (post) and paste.

Tip #7 – keep the hashtags relevant

Instagrams uses visual intelligence to track what elements are in your photo, so it can tell if you post a photo at home in your backyard and use #mountains when there aren’t any in the picture. The hashtags need to match the photo or caption in some way. I will use an example from a photo I posted from a village in Naxos which had flowers in the frame. I spoke in the caption about it being my birthday weekend so hence why these hashtags did well:

Tip #8 – research the hashtags you’re using

Not only should you be researching hashtags that fit your brand and fit within the ideal post count (100-900k), but research the ones you are already using! I always check my insights after a few hours and then again after 24 hours and go through the hashtags to see if I’ve made it to the top page. If I did, I tend to keep then saved in my notes as well under a ‘TOP RANKING HASHTAGS’ category as I know that hashtag has favoured my posts before so is likely to do it again. Keep this favoured list updated.

Tip #9 – tag the equipment or software you use

I don’t use this one too often but sometimes I can find myself in the top page of tags relating to the camera I am using or tagging the software/app I use to edit. Are you using presets by someone with a big following? Hashtag them! They might re-share meaning more exposure. Or you can simply tag #lightroomedit or #vscofilters (though not #lightroom or #vsco). If you speak about editing or photography in your caption then definitely add these!

So with these tips, this is how my hashtags usually look:

5-10 location specific hashtags (medium range between 100k – 900k posts) 10-15 category tags (medium 100k – 900k) 3-4 category tags (large 1m+) 2-3 smaller hashtags (under 100k) from location or category 2-3 equipment hashtags (medium range)

BONUS TIP #10 – SECRET TIP TO DISCOVERING WHICH HASHTAGS ARE WORKING FOR YOU

As per the above screenshots of my hashtag reach for certain photos, I’ve found a way to sneakily discover the top 5 hashtags and how many unique hits you’re getting for each. Follow the steps below and thank me later 😉

• Go to the photo you want to check and click the blue ‘Promote’ button at the bottom right corner (you will need to link your Facebook for this feature).
• Set the destination and audience to whatever you wish (this won’t matter as you won’t be going ahead with the promotion)
• Set your budget to the minimum allowed and then the duration to 1 day.
• Review and click ‘Create Promotion’ (you won’t be charged yet).
• Once the promotion is pending approval, click ‘View Insights’ and for one time only you will be able to see a ranking of these top 5 hashtags. Screenshot that page!
• Once you get out of that and check insights again, it will view the same as it always does and then go to the bottom of the page and click ‘Delete Promotion’. You won’t be charged as the promo is still pending with Instagram.

Instagram and travel are like two peas in a pod – you can rarely have one without the other. Hashtags are a great way to grow your following and let others discover your profile, especially when you’re using hashtags for such a popular topic as traveling. But choosing the right hashtag is not as simple as just using the first one that pops up.

There are other things you need to consider like the relevance and popularity of the hashtag, which greatly influence your chances of being discovered by others. So, here’s our guide to the best travel hashtags for Instagram and a few tips on how to use them, which should help you boost your following!

How To Use Travel Hashtags

Before we get into all the best travel hashtags for Instagram, it’s important to go over a few important things first. The key thing to note is that you don’t want to use the most popular hashtags – that’s why you won’t find any obvious options like #travel #travelblogger or #roadtrip here.

It’s generally best to avoid all hashtags that have millions of posts. Although they are followed by a lot of people, these hashtags get so many posts that it’s likely your post will get entirely lost, especially if you don’t have hundreds of thousands of followers. To grow the following of a small profile, it’s best to use several smaller hashtags. If you can find hashtags you like that don’t have more than 10,000 posts, it’s the best way to go.

You can post up to 30 hashtags either in the caption or in the comment. Add 31 hashtags and your photo/comment won’t post. It’s usually best to put up to 15 hashtags under the post, but feel free to add as many as you like. Also, try to combine the hashtags to reach different audiences – if you’re posting a photo of a park in a foreign city, make sure to hashtag everything from the exact location to #traveltheworld.

Most Popular Travel Hashtags

You took a nice photo and it’s time to upload it to your Instagram. The first hashtags you should look for are those related to travel, but try to avoid the most popular ones. Hashtags with less than 10,000 posts are better to use if you’re trying to grow your account because it’s more likely that you’ll be featured in the top or recent posts. If someone were specifically searching for this hashtag, would they be delighted to find your post? Is it the content they are likely looking for?

If the answer is YES, then this a good hashtag choice.

Do the hashtags you've chosen make sense together and support each other?

If the answer is NO you may want to get rid of any extra tags. Stick to a single niche or theme to avoid confusing algorithms. Recent algorithm trends have shown that posts that stick to a single subject and closely related hashtags, tend to do better.

Are any of the hashtags sarcastic, cute or made up on the spur of the moment?

Are you using super popular, over-used hashtags?

These probably won't hurt you, but they are are unlikely to help you in Instagram feed. One or two carefully chosen popular tags may be helpful for directing Instagram Reels and Tiktok posts. Hashtags for Instagram Reels and Hashtags for TikTok are extremely important for discovery but should be super concise and used sparingly.

Do my hashtags identify a specific group of people for whom this content is relevant?

Hashtags like #FamilyTravel and #CouplesTravel and #LuxuryTraveler help further refine your travel audience and are a great idea when they are your primary focus. Niche-ing down is a great way to build engagement.

But don't use multiple groups in one post or you may defeat the purpose of the tag. Pick a team and use multiple tags for that one group rather than spread yourself too thin.

While we don't have evidence to support it, it doesn't hurt to include a few hashtags with positive terms like "Happy", "Dream" "Vibes" etc in them.

Algorithms don't do feelings and rely on language signals like this to identify posts as positive or negative. Humans also react to positive messaging. So if you have the space, sprinkle some positivity.

Have you looked at the hashtag feed for that hashtag? Do you belong there?

Sometimes we think we know what a hashtag is all about... and then we look at the feed and have to take a moment. It's a good idea to get a look at the feeds you're trying to fit yourself into. If your post doesn't resonate with the audience there, or if the content is not what you think it is, you might be hurting your chances for discovery.

How Many Hashtags to Use in 2023

There is no magic formula for how many hashtags to use on social media. Other than the limits imposed by the platforms, the number is up to you. The most important thing about hashtag use with current social algorithms is to commit to your theme or niche for each post.

Consistent hashtag use and subject matter in your posting helps you to grow your authority on that subject.

When you are hashtagging a travel post, you should stick to travel hashtags and preferably clusters that are often used together such as location travel hashtags or activity type hashtags.

At one time it was ok to use any hashtags on Instagram that were accurate for your photo, even if the hashtags were unrelated to one another. The more the merrier. Currently this practice is not working. Clarity is key. Algorithms are favoring authoritative content that is easy to classify and understand.

This means that using hashtags for pets, books, fashion and beauty, along with travel hashtags (even when all those "items" are present in a photo) may result in the algorithm dropping your post for possibly hashtag spamming.

Hashtags for Tiktok and Hashtags for Instagram Reels need to be even more specific and concise.
