How to get a rapid COVID test in NYC

Here's where to get a quick, reliable test—and now you can track wait times at testing sites across the city.

Collier Sutter

Wondering how to get a rapid COVID test in NYC?

With the holidays here, you may need a COVID-19 test and you may need it done ASAP. Testing is certainly ramping up as the city begins to see numbers passing four percent in positivity rate—the unsettling signs of a second wave or the first coming back.

Over the past several months of the pandemic, urgent care clinics such as CityMD have done much of the sample collection for the coronavirus through r apid ,  PCR  and antibody testing.

However, there are not currently enough urgent care sites for the demand. CityMD announced that due to recent wrap-around lines, all of its locations will now be be closing 90 minutes earlier. Long lines for testing at sites have kept doctors and staff at work far later than their scheduled business hours.

"For months, our urgent care sites have been extraordinarily busy, seeing millions of patients for typical urgent care needs plus increasing numbers of people seeking medical evaluation and a COVID-19 test," CityMD said in an email sent to patients.

"Our goal is to treat every person who needs care, period, but unfortunately, we can't stay open past our normal hours on a daily basis," the email continued. "Our site staff and doctors have been seeing patients well beyond normal closing time for months now, and we've reached the point where they are sacrificing their own safety and health."

What are the fastest sites right now in NYC?

There is COVID-19 testing available throughout the five boroughs. However, it is New York’s Public Hospital network or  NYC Health + Hospitals , that have the fastest turnaround times for rapid testing. Can you check wait times at COVID-19 testing sites across the city?

Now you can! NYC Health & Hospital network have launched a new dashboard that allows you to actually see the wait times before you go. You can check the facility's wait times here . Due to the fact that the dashboard was just rolled out, some locations are still listed as "not reported yet". So far, 18 testing locations have already adopted the system.

Are tests administered at NYS health and hospitals a different type? What qualifies them as a “rapid’ test?

No, they are no different. Tests at New York State health and hospital are still PCR ( polymerase chain reaction) tests you may take at an urgent care, but they fall into the category of “rapid” or “express”   because there is a testing lab onsite in the building, to check your results immediately. Other remote sites that are not considered express locations, offer PCR testing that may takes up to 3-5 days for results, as they need to pass your results to a lab carrier who then transports it to a corresponding lab.

Are some test more accurate than others?

Outside of the state and government network of sites, some locations may have different variations of testing. For example, some locations may offer, spit tests, mouth swabs, or nasal swabs that do not go all the way into your nasal passage, which could be less reliable, explains a representative for the Department of Health.

For quickly-concluded tests, there is always a chance of receiving a false positive—but usually never a false negative. If you are negative that often means you are negative.

Is testing still free?

Community testing sites operated by NYC Health + Hospitals offer free and convenient testing on a walk-in only basis.

However, there's some additional information you should know. In New York, COVID-19 diagnostic testing is free for sites affiliated with the NYC Test & Trace Corps, but testing sites not run by New York State may charge a fee, according to the Department of Health .

If you go to a testing site operated by local governments, private companies or not-for-profit organizations, check with the testing site, your health care provider or by calling the New York State COVID-19 hotline (1-888-364-3065) in advance of being tested. You'll want to confirm you will not be responsible for any fees associated with your test.

Why would there be a COVID fee anyway?

COVID fees vary from one practice or hospital to the next, but generally fees are for added costs of operating such as PPE. Cleaning materials are still in  exceedingly high demand .

Remember: Governor Cuomo recommended New Yorkers should not travel around the holidays, and the state has prohibited gatherings larger than 10 people in private residences. Keep getting tested regularly and slow the spread!

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

This recent thread about others departing via sea might be helpful https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k13923926-Observed_covid_tests_in_New_York-New_York_City_New_York.html

Take my comments with a grain of salt because I really don't know but last I looked into it pharmacy testing was mostly all 'by appointment' so I would start by locating pharmacies nearby and either call them or look on-line to see if they have on-line booking for appointments.

I did see some mobile testing vans in midtown yesterday but whether they can do the appropriate tests & return results in the required time frame I don't know

There is a link in the thread I linked in #1 for finding testing locations

News Release

Carnival cruise line updates pre-cruise testing protocols.

Carnival Cruise Line is informing guests and travel agents of additional updates to its pre-cruise testing protocols for unvaccinated guests for voyages departing September 6, 2022, and later. These changes are consistent with what local destinations have advised will be acceptable for arriving cruise guests, and Carnival will continue to work closely with local destinations to protect the health of its guests, crew and the communities the cruise line visits. The updated protocols are:

  • In addition to lab administered tests, self-testing is accepted for unvaccinated guests on cruises 15 nights and shorter.
  • Certain destinations do not accept unsupervised pre-cruise self-testing, including Bermuda, Canada, Greece, and Spain. If used for visiting these destinations, self-testing must be supervised by a medical professional.
  • Regardless of the type of test taken, unvaccinated guests will be required to present their negative test results via VeriFLY or as part of the embarkation process.

Additionally, travel insurance is no longer a requirement for unvaccinated guests unless it is required by a destination, such as Bermuda. Irrespective of vaccination status, travel insurance is required for all guests visiting Fiji. Details on guidelines for submitting proof of testing and other COVID-related protocols are available on Carnival’s Have Fun. Be Safe. webpage. Carnival encourages guests to refer to this information as they prepare for any upcoming cruises and to carefully read any other follow-up pre-cruise communications. Testing for COVID-19

On November 26, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO), designated a new variant of concern, called Omicron. The existence of a new variant of concern and the approaching holidays has made it all the more important to continue to test for COVID-19.

Vaccines are still the most effective way to protect yourself and others against the virus, and New York City is offering vaccines free of charge for all ages. This includes the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11 . Additionally, neither immigration status nor health insurance needs to be shared in order to receive a shot. You can search for appointments by using the vaccine finder tool .

Just as COVID-19 vaccines are free, COVID-19 testing is also offered with no cost. They are confidential, safe, and anyone can get tested.

NYC Health + Hospitals has a number of locations where testing is available across the five boroughs at hospitals, health centers, and pop-up locations. Testing is walk in only with no appointment needed unless an at-home test is requested.

Types of testing available

NYC Health + Hospitals’ available tests include PCR tests, rapid molecular tests, rapid antigen tests at Test & Trace mobile units, and saliva self-testing. Children who are 2 years of age or older may be tested at any of the sites. However, saliva self-testing is for children 4 years of age or older.

PCR tests , or molecular tests are a kind of COVID-19 test that detects genetic material of the virus using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A sample is collected by inserting a nasal swab into each nostril and rotating the soft end of the swab against the inside for a few seconds. Results for these tests may take longer to receive as samples are sent to labs outside the testing site. In NYC, the turnaround time to get results back is about one day.

Rapid molecular test samples and rapid antigen test samples are collected the same way as PCR tests. The results for these tests can be made available within minutes since a swab was taken and are processed onsite. Rapid antigen tests detect the presence of certain proteins in the virus that causes COVID-19.

Saliva self-testing is only available at certain locations. Saliva samples are taken by the individual themselves.

Mobile testing sites move throughout the city into various locations throughout the boroughs, and stay in one location on specific dates. Some mobile units double as vaccination sites. Available tests in mobile sites can vary.

It is also possible to request at-home testing scheduled in advance for all New Yorkers that have been in close contact (being within 6 feet for at least 10 minutes over a 24-hour period) with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 . Individuals who are immunocompromised, aged 65+, or both, can request for at-home testing services as well. At-home tests are conducted by a clinician who will collect a sample from the individual.

To request an at-home test, New Yorkers may schedule an appointment by calling 929-298-9400 . Appointments for at-home testing are available seven days per week, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Who should get tested?

Getting tested can help with both peace of mind and mitigating the spread of the virus. If you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 including a fever, chills, shortness of breath, or any of the wide range of known symptoms, you should get tested immediately. Your doctor may also recommend that you get tested.

People who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should also consider weekly testing if they frequent in-person social interactions with others, especially if they are around people who are not wearing masks indoors.

According to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) , you should be tested if you have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19. If you are fully vaccinated, you should be tested within 3-5 days of being in close contact with someone who has COVID-19. If you are unvaccinated, it is imperative that you are tested as soon as possible after a known exposure.

For both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, it is recommended that you are tested before and after attending a gathering, especially if there are others present who are not fully vaccinated or who are at risk of getting severe COVID. For both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, it is also recommended that you are tested before traveling and 3-5 days after travel.

Service Updates

Beginning March 11, 2024, COVID-19 Express testing will no longer be offered at the Morrisania clinic.

COVID-19 Express testing is still available by appointment at the Crown Heights, Jamaica, and Riverside locations.

You can make an appointment for a free COVID-19 test at the Health Department's COVID Express sites throughout the city. Test results are available within 24 hours or less of your visit. This means that most patients will receive their test results on the same day as their visit.

All tests performed at these sites are PCR-based laboratory diagnostic tests. PCR tests can detect the virus even if there is only a small amount in your system.

COVID-19 tests at COVID Express sites are free to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status.

Our sites have expanded services to include testing for other respiratory viruses (affecting breathing), including flu and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). Staff will let you know more during your visit.

Some COVID Express testing sites also have other clinical service, such as testing for sexually transmitted infections. Get more information about available clinic services on the NYC Health Clinics webpage .

How to Schedule and Get Results

Testing is available by appointment only. To make an appointment, choose a time on the online scheduler below.

After your test, you can get your results:

  • After scheduling your appointment, you will receive a link to create an account. You may also already have an existing account from a previous visit to an NYC Health + Hospitals facility that you can use to view your results.
  • By returning to the clinic two to three business days after your test to pick up printed results.

Positive Test Result

If you test positive, you will receive a call from the clinic.

People who had confirmed COVID-19 in the past 90 days (meaning they tested positive using a viral test) and recovered do not need to get tested unless they develop symptoms. People may test positive with a PCR test for weeks or months after infection, even though they are not contagious. For this reason, any COVID Express testing appointments made within 90 days of a positive test will be canceled.

If you have recovered from COVID-19 and now have new symptoms of COVID-19, talk to a health care provider, especially if you recently had close contact with someone who has COVID-19.

If you receive a positive result for Flu A, Flu B, or RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), call your health care provider to discuss treatment. If you are an older adult, have an underlying health condition, or the positive test was for your child, your provider may have more instructions for you to stay safe and continue care.

When are cruise lines still requiring COVID testing? Here's what passengers should know.

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ended its COVID-19 cruise ship program last month, many cruise lines changed their health and safety protocols and dropped some testing requirements .

Major brands like Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line rolled back their COVID-19 rules and removed testing for vaccinated passengers on some voyages, while other lines scrapped them for all sailings.

Tests are still required in a number of cases, though. Policies may vary depending on local requirements at various destinations. Here's what passengers need to know about cruise protocols, from testing to face masks and social distancing.

Cruise lines change COVID-19 rules:  Carnival, Royal Caribbean and more drop pre-cruise testing after end of CDC program

Is the cruise industry coming back?: After more than 2 years under a COVID cloud, the answer is yes.

When do cruise lines still require COVID-19 testing?

► Carnival Cruise Line will require vaccinated passengers to test only on trips 16 or more nights or where required by local rules, including on voyages to Canada and Bermuda, beginning Sept. 6, according to a press release.

Unvaccinated travelers or those who do not show proof of vaccination will be required to "present the results of a negative PCR or antigen test taken within three days of embarkation." In the U.S., guests under 5 are exempt from vaccine and testing rules.

►Royal Caribbean will require vaccinated guests 5 and older to test on U.S. cruises 10 nights or longer beginning Sept. 5, according to its  website . They must test within three days of boarding. Unvaccinated guests age 5 and up need to take a test within three days of sailing on all trips. The changes are subject to local regulations.

►Celebrity Cruises will require vaccinated passengers to test only on voyages that are 10 or more nights where local rules permit starting Sept 5., according to its  website . They must do so within three days of sailing. Unvaccinated guests 5 and up must take a test within three days prior to their trip for U.S. sailings.

►Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will drop all pre-cruise requirements for vaccinated passengers age 12 and over as of Sept. 3, according to a news release .

Guests age 12 and older who are unvaccinated or do not show proof of vaccination will still need to test within 72 hours before boarding. The company said it "continues to strongly recommend all guests be up to date on vaccination protocols and test at their convenience prior to travel." Changes are also subject to local requirements.

► MSC Cruises will no longer require fully vaccinated U.S. residents to take a test before boarding on sailings from U.S. ports to the Bahamas and the Caribbean as of Sept. 1. Unvaccinated passengers age 2 and older still need to show proof of a proof of a "lab-administered negative COVID-19 viral test negative test" taken within three days of their cruise, according to its website .

Passengers 2 and older who are not U.S. residents must "show proof of a negative antigen or RT-PCR lab administered test" taken within three days of their sailing, regardless of vaccination status, according to its  website . The line's policies vary by destination.

►Princess Cruises will require travelers on voyages 16 nights or longer to "take a supervised test within three days of embarkation (guests 5 and older)," as of Sept. 6, according to a news release. That rule also applies to guests on full Panama Canal transits and certain other voyages.

Passengers who are unvaccinated need to show a negative result from a self-test taken within three days of embarkation on sailings 15 nights or less. Unvaccinated children under 5 are exempt. The changes are subject to local regulations.

►Holland America Line will not require testing for vaccinated guests on sailings 15 nights or shorter starting Sept. 6, according to a news release. Unvaccinated passengers age 5 and up must show a negative result from a medically supervised test or self-test taken within three days of embarkation.

Those changes are subject to local restrictions, and exclude full Panama Canal transits and certain other sailings.

All guests 5 and up must provide "a medically supervised COVID-19 test with written negative result" on cruises 16 nights or more. Travelers need to test within three days of embarkation, and unvaccinated travelers must still request an exemption.

►Disney Cruise Line will no longer require fully vaccinated guests traveling on the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Wonder and Disney Wish to take a test before their cruise beginning Sept. 23, according to its website . For sailings on the Disney Magic, the change will take effect Nov. 7.

Travelers who are not fully vaccinated must continue to show proof of a negative test test taken one to three days before their trip, though they will no longer need to take an additional test at the terminal on embarkation day.

What kind of COVID-19 tests do cruise lines require?

Cruise lines still set criteria for the tests they accept. Carnival said it will accept self-administered tests as well as lab-administered tests from unvaccinated guests on voyages that are 15 nights or less beginning Sept. 6, according to a news release.

Royal Caribbean will also allow passengers on U.S. cruises to take a home test or one "professionally administered by a health professional" starting Sept. 5 according to its  website . Celebrity will accept self-tests beginning on the same date, as well.

Those changes are subject to local requirements.

Norwegian Cruise Line, meanwhile, will require "proof of a medically supervised negative PCR or Antigen test" for unvaccinated passengers 12 and up, according to its website . Travelers should check with their cruise line for their specific rules.

First-time cruisers: 3 things to know before stepping foot on the ship

What kind of on-board testing requirements do cruise lines have?

Cruise lines still have on-board protocols in place, as well. For its part, Carnival requires passengers who are exposed to or in close contact with anyone who tests positive for COVID or displays symptoms to be tested, along with their close contacts, according to its website . Those passengers may have to quarantine in their rooms until medical staff clears them.

Other cruise lines have similar protocols in place, like Norwegian, which advises passengers who have COVID symptoms while sailing to contact the ship's medical center, which is equipped to test on board, per its website . Royal Caribbean Group's namesake brand, Royal Caribbean International, also offers testing to travelers who feel sick, and its medical lab "allows for rapid, accurate onsite PCR testing with results in under an hour, alongside a multitude of other evaluative tests," its website reads.

What other protocols do cruise lines have in place?

► Masks: Carnival highly recommends guests wear masks in public indoor areas except when eating or drinking, and "when in large congregate events outdoors where physical distancing cannot be maintained," per its website . The cruise line also recommends masking during embarkation and debarkation and requires masks in the medical center. Crew members also wear masks   indoors at all times.

On Royal Caribbean International, masks are optional for passengers who are vaccinated. They are recommended for unvaccinated kids. MSC has a similar policy . On Princess sailings, masks are recommended but not mandatory in most areas of the ship, though the cruise line notes on its website that "you may need to wear them in select venues or certain situations." Masks are optional on all Norwegian voyages.

►Cleaning: Many cruise lines continue to emphasize heightened cleaning on board. Norwegian, for example, has "enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols" in place with EPA-approved disinfectants, and is making use of medical-grade air filters, according to its website . Royal Caribbean similarly boosted its cleaning regimen, including cleaning frequently used places like elevators and stairways every two hours. Crew must also take continual training classes and "refreshers," per its website .

MSC is also utilizing "hospital-grade disinfectants, electrostatic sprayers, increased cleaning frequency and a focus on high-traffic, frequently-touched areas," according to its website .

►Physical distancing: Cruise lines may recommend social distancing during parts of trips. Royal Caribbean International  recommends distancing  in select parts of the ship indicated by signage.

Cruise lines may also change their policies as needed.

"Our member lines continuously monitor health conditions onboard and employ health and safety protocols commensurate with those conditions," Anne Madison, a spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association, told USA TODAY in an email. "This may result in cruise lines adjusting protocols when appropriate in consultation with medical and other health experts in order to continue to make science-driven and medically informed decisions."

Passengers can find more information on ship protocols on their cruise line's website.

EXCLUSIVE: NYC to reopen cruise terminals in late September

' src=

The city’s quasi-public Economic Development Corporation will allow the mega ships back to Big Apple berths for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, according to agency spokesman Chris Singleton.

The agency expects about 50-60 cruise departures by the end of the city’s current fiscal year on June 30, 2022, according to minutes of EDC’s June 22 board of directors meeting .

The big boats will start docking at the EDC’s Manhattan Cruise Terminal at Pier 88 and Pier 90, according to a presentation by the agency’s assistant vice president for asset management Bianca Sosa from the June meeting.

Pier 90 hosted the enormous US Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort during the early pandemic, supposedly to support overflowing city hospitals, but the vessel sat largely empty for its month-long stay.

Cruise ships were a hotbed of coronavirus infections early on in the pandemic, such as notorious outbreak aboard the ocean liner Diamond Princess in Japan in early 2020 .

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a No Sail Order on March 14, 2020 effectively banning cruise traffic in the United States.

In October, CDC released a follow-up directive to phase cruises back in with conditions, and in May the health officials published guidelines for operators, including trial voyages for ships before they can again board passengers.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was scheduled to launch such a test cruise from just across the harbor at Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Sunday, Aug. 22, and eagle-eyed New Yorkers spotted the vessel as early as Thursday, Aug. 19.

EDC plans to work with two lines, Norwegian and Crystal, for its first sailings out of the city next month, according to Singleton. Both operators will enter into an agreement with city and state officials to follow CDC guidelines.

Norwegian wants to set sail for its first trip out of New York City on Sept. 26 to Bermuda , according to a spokeswoman.

A federal judge in Florida ruled earlier this month ruled that Norwegian could require passengers to show proof they got a COVID-19 shot before boarding, NPR reported .

How much time will it take to get the result and the cost involved?

There are lab q mobile kiosks across the city. Near time Sq..check on 34th from 5th to 8th ave.

The tests are free and turnaround time is usually 24 hrs.

This question has been asked several times during the past week or so. There are locations all around the city.

The process is that you walk up and provide the info that they ask for. Not 100% sure that you can book appts at the stand alone locations.

I saw one a few blocks from TS just this past Saturday. 6th Ave and maybe 40th. There are also locations in Union Sq, Grand Central, SOHO , across from the Empire State Building , across from Macy's, etc.

You can also ask your hotel if they know where the nearest location is.

While cruising used to be as simple as packing a swimsuit and setting sail, new COVID-19 protocols have complicated many travelers' perfect summer vacation.

In the wake of the pandemic, many cruise lines have developed their own individualized requirements for passengers to fulfill before stepping on board.

While the differing protocols can quickly become confusing for those looking to pick a sailing best fit for them, this breakdown allows travelers to get all the information they need without all the hassle.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Vaccination Requirements: In order to set sail on a Carnival cruise, travelers must complete a pre-boarding vaccine attestation confirming their status as fully vaccinated individuals. As current CDC guidelines define a "fully vaccinated" person as having two doses of an approved vaccine, passengers are not required to have a booster shot on most Carnival cruises. Some exceptions apply to international sailings.

Testing Requirements: All guests are required to take an official COVID-19 test before boarding. Those who have received both doses of the vaccine AND a booster shot are able to take their required test up to three days before sailing. Those who are fully vaccinated but have not received a booster, however, must test two days prior to their cruise.

Mask Mandates: While masks are highly encouraged in highly populated areas such as dining halls or casinos, they are not required at any point of the sailing.

Destination Requirements: Depending on port visits, rules and regulations for destinations will vary based on local protocols. Unvaccinated guests over 12, however, are prohibited from debarking unless booked with a Carnival tour. Children under 12 may debark with their vaccinated family members.

Do I need a COVID-19 test for my cruise? Your pre- and post-cruise testing questions answered

Ashley Kosciolek

The road to the cruise industry's restart was a long one with lots of twists and turns.

Now that ships are back in service, the number of COVID-19 deaths is down worldwide, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has scrapped its opt-in protocols for vessels, nearly all cruise lines have walked back their pre-cruise COVID-19 testing requirements.

Additionally, most countries have waived their test-for-entry requirements. That's good news for passengers because individual countries often had timelines different from those of cruise lines, making it difficult for travelers to accomplish pre-cruise testing when departing from ports abroad.

With all of the changes, The Points Guy is here to answer some of your most pressing questions about COVID-19 testing for cruises. For a line-by-line list of current testing and vaccination policies, read our pre-cruise vaccination guide .

Editor's note: This article is intended to highlight general rules for most cruise lines. Testing requirements can vary by cruise line and embarkation port. Check with your line and the rules for the country in which you'll be embarking for the most current information relevant to your itinerary.

Pre-cruise COVID-19 testing

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

Do I need to take a COVID-19 test before my cruise?

All but a small handful of lines have waived their mandatory testing protocols, except where required by local regulations in the countries and ports their ships visit. It is unlikely you will have to test prior to embarkation unless it's required by your country or municipality of entry or you're exhibiting symptoms similar to those associated with COVID-19.

How close to my cruise do I need to be tested?

If your cruise line or destinations on your itinerary require negative test results, they will generally have to be from no more than two to five days prior to your embarkation date, depending on the specific regulations.

Where can I find an approved test that will give me my results in time?

Pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS offer antigen and PCR testing by appointment. However, with the tight window in which the results are needed, there's no guarantee you'll have them in time to cruise.

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

The best option is to order at-home antigen testing kits that offer telehealth access. You can find them through the Optum or eMed websites.

The type of test you will need will vary based on the specific requirements of your situation. If you need a professionally proctored at-home antigen test , order one of Abbott's BinaxNOW tests. (Make sure it's the BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card Home Test if the cruise line or destination requires results to be from supervised tests.)

If it's not required that your test be proctored in order for the results to count, another option is self-administered at-home antigen testing, which you can conduct yourself without dialing in for proctoring. These tests are available at many local drugstores like CVS and Walgreens and big-box chains like Target and Walmart, and they're far more affordable than the supervised version. But before you buy, check to see if you qualify for a shipment of free government-funded tests by visiting the United States' official COVID-19 website .

Will my cruise line provide testing at the embarkation port?

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

Although most major cruise lines offered day-of-boarding testing at embarkation ports, that's no longer the case. If a negative test result is required for you to board your cruise, make sure you arrive prepared.

How much does a COVID-19 test cost?

COVID-19 test costs depend largely on the type of test, how and where you have the test done, and whether you're specifically asked if the test is for travel purposes. Prices can vary from free to several hundred dollars.

At a big-box drive-thru pharmacy, there's a good chance your test will be covered by your health insurance. However, it depends on whether the reason for the test is indicated when you make your appointment.

For example, CVS asks if you need the test to meet travel requirements. In that case, insurance is unlikely to pick up the tab.

If you order a test online instead, you're looking at a vast swath of pricing, ranging from $4 for a single unproctored antigen test (or 25 tests for $25, which is only $1 per test) to about $70 for a pack of two proctored antigen tests, plus shipping. If you have a flexible spending account or a health savings account, the IRS says at-home tests are considered eligible expenses . The White House has also indicated that people with private health insurance could be reimbursed for the cost of these at-home tests. Check with your insurance provider for details.

If you're due for a shipment of free at-home, unsupervised tests, as mentioned above, you won't pay anything.

If you're someone who requires a PCR test and you want to do it yourself at home, the downside is that it can be pricey, with kits running between roughly $30 and $120 each.

Keep in mind that if you need COVID testing during your cruise — either from an onboard medical center or a shoreside hospital or doctor's office — you will be responsible for the cost, which can be expensive unless you have a travel insurance policy that covers it.

COVID-19 tests during a cruise

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

Will I be required to test during my cruise?

Currently, no cruise lines require routine onboard testing for passengers. Exceptions would be if you feel ill and ask to be tested or exhibit symptoms that require you to be tested. In these cases, you would be responsible for any associated costs.

Additionally, if a passenger feels ill and subsequently tests positive for COVID-19 on your cruise , you could be required to take a test if the vessel's contact tracing program determines you were in close contact with the ill passenger. Testing under these circumstances is covered by the line.

Most countries have waived their test-for-entry requirements, so it's highly unlikely that you'll have to take a test before disembarking in order to return home.

Post-cruise COVID-19 testing

manhattan cruise terminal covid testing

Do I need to take a COVID-19 test after my cruise?

The only reason you would have to test after your cruise is if it's required by a country you're visiting or by your home country in order for you to return. Since most countries have now scrapped those requirements, you almost certainly won't have to take a post-voyage test.
