Near-Riot at Megadeth Show in Ireland Inspires ‘Holy Wars’ – Epic Rock Tales
This episode of Epic Rock Tales stars Megadeth legend Dave Mustaine ! In the frontman’s own words, he describes how a hostile night in Northern Ireland led to the creation of Megadeth’s magnum opus, “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.”
Dave Mustaine told us this story during Part 2 of his ‘Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?’ segment. Megadeth was on tour in Antrim, Northern Ireland, on May 11, 1988. This was back when Dave was still a heavy drinker, so this incident was fueled by a few too many Guinness beers.
A fan in the audience threw a British pound onstage hitting Mustaine and his guitar. After putting his axe down and making a speech which he thought was pro-Ireland as a whole, Mustaine mentioned “the cause” not knowing this was a term which referenced the IRA. Suddenly, the half-Protestant, half-Catholic crowd split in half and police were called in to keep the peace.
Waking up the next morning, Mustaine had no collection of what had occured, thanks to a few too many Guinness’. It was bassist David Ellefson ’s unfortunate duty to inform Mustaine they had been escorted out of Northern Ireland in a bulletproof bus. This incident inspired Mustaine to pen the phenomenal, “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due,” one of the most perfect thrash songs in the genre’s rich history.
Check out our exclusive animation of Dave Mustaine’s recollection in the episode of Epic Rock Tales above!

An awesome show that reminded me of the reasons why I love Megadeth. My son was so happy that I took him along too, he said it was the best experience ever and that he now understood what it was like to at 80’s metal music gig. We both can’t wait to see them again. Hope they do their own tour soon.

AMAZING!!! I had the best time, I just wish I had the money to meet the band. I did get to meet the Drummer from the first band. He was bad ass! Really nice, I just can read their name.
This was the 3rd time seeing Megadeth, second time at the Revention Center. Awsome venue and just the right size. Thankful I was able to get to the front and your security was awesome. They bring you fresh water!
Amazing night!!
What can I say...I was at a sold out 1,600 person venue with Megadeth literally feet away from me. It was more than awesome. The guitar playing was amazing (from lead, rhythm and bass) and drummer did a solid job. Ellefson was really into it (considering he grew up near here) and Mustaine sounded great and seemed to enjoy it. Highly recommend for anyone with remote interest.

Finnish guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari joined MEGADETH last September after the band's longtime axeman Kiko Loureiro , announced earlier that month that he would sit out the next leg of MEGADETH 's "Crush The World" tour in order to stay home with his children back in Finland. It was later revealed that Mäntysaari would continue to play guitar for MEGADETH for the foreseeable future, with Loureiro seemingly having no plans to return.
The 37-year-old Mäntysaari was born in Tampere, Finland and began playing guitar at the age of 12. In 2004, he joined the band WINTERSUN . He has also been a member of SMACKBOUND since 2015.
MEGADETH played its first concert with Mäntysaari on September 6, 2023 at Revel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Loureiro officially joined MEGADETH in April 2015, about five months after Chris Broderick 's exit from the group.
Since its inception in 1983, MEGADETH has ascended from its raw thrash metal roots to become an unstoppable force in the heavy metal world. With founder Dave Mustaine at the helm, MEGADETH 's journey has been marked by a penchant for pushing the boundaries of speed, technicality, and complexity in their music. Their groundbreaking album "Rust In Peace" , released in 1990, is frequently cited as a seminal work in the thrash metal genre. Along with the critically acclaimed "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" , it cemented MEGADETH 's place in the annals of metal history.
Over four decades, the band's discography has earned numerous certifications, including platinum and multi-platinum awards, with albums like "Countdown To Extinction" and "Youthanasia" achieving widespread critical acclaim. 2016's "Dystopia" not only marked a high point with their first Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" after twelve nominations but also set the stage for their latest triumph, "The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead!" in 2022. MEGADETH 's status as part of the "Big Four" of thrash metal underscores their trailblazing role in the genre, laying the groundwork for countless bands and musicians who have followed in their wake.
