We chilled at Netflix’s Singapore headquarters

I’ve never had throw pillow envy before.

But there I was, in Netflix’s Singapore headquarters, seriously considering running off with two pillows—one that read “Official Netflix Connoisseur” and another printed with the definition of the word “netflixing.” (“The act of watching an entire season of a show in one sitting”; “A totally valid excuse for avoiding social obligations”).

Netflixing has become my favorite verb in the past months, having just marathoned “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Better Call Saul,” “Stranger Things” and “Narcos” and so it was hard not to fangirl. “This is our office, it’s been open since March,” said Belle Baldoza.

The office, located in the Marina Bay Financial Centre, is home to Netflix’s 50 employees in Singapore. “And we’re still growing,” Belle said.

Belle, who is Netflix’s Consumer PR Manager for Asia Pacific, said, “In consumer PR, we are in charge of making people love the Netflix brand. We create a lot of stories, we tap into the pulse of pop culture, seasonal stuff, things people can relate to. We educate people on how to use Netflix and how it’s relevant in their daily lives.”

All over their office are bits and pieces of the Netflix brand and the kind of entertainment it has brought to people’s worlds. There’s a beanbag with the word “Netflix” printed all over.  On the walls are posters and images from Netflix shows. Meeting rooms, big and small, are named after Netflix originals.

“The entertainment landscape is ever evolving. Entertainment habits are changing. It’s not about linear watching anymore. You have the liberty of watching the shows at your own pace and you can watch them all in one go. That’s what we’re all about—we’re all about enabling, not only enabling consumer control and enabling people to watch anytime anywhere, letting them fall in love with the shows at their own pace, but at the same time we’re enabling creative freedom for creators because we let the narrative breathe,” said Belle.

For Netflix employees, this means watching their favorite shows even at work.

“People catch up on shows at lunch,” said Lavinia Cheng, Netflix PR coordinator.

Some of them do it at their work stations while others watch at their comfy lounge. “We also watch at Fuller House, that room with the TV which looks like a living room. When we want to watch a show as a team and then talk about it after, we do it there,” said Belle.

And in case they like snacking while watching (or working), their pantry is fully stocked with all kinds of goodies—from sandwich condiments, cup noodles and cornflakes to chocolates, chips and fruits. The office takes care of lunch too.

“At Netflix, everyone is treated like an adult. Our core values include freedom and responsibility. We can technically work wherever as long as the work gets done. We don’t really have leave days so you can take your vacation time off as long as you’ve handed over your work.”

For just a morning, I got a little taste of life in Netflix.

We sat and watched movie clips and looked at stills of upcoming shows and talked about “Luke Cage” (“He’s not your usual Marvel superhero, he’s a street level hero, he’s not a costumed dude, he has his internal struggle and killer soundtrack,” said Belle), “Girlboss” (“It’s coming out in 2017”), “A Series of Unfortunate Events” (“We have Neil Patrick Harris as Olaf”), “The Crown” and “Santa Clarita Diet,” which will star Drew Barrymore.

Sure, freedom, food and fun are great things, but for Belle and Lavinia, working at Netflix has even bigger perks.

Lavinia said, “We’re a tech company as much as we’re an entertainment company. It’s a very good environment, we talk about the technology behind how we bring the service to the people.”

Belle said, “I’m excited to be part of bringing the entertainment revolution to the Philippines, to be a part of that team. As a Filipino, I grew up watching a lot of TV and it’s been a huge part of my life. I’m very, very excited to see more Filipinos discovering the wonders of Netflix and all the different stories it has to offer. I just want the people to discover the stories.”

Excerpts from our interview:

What’s the coolest part about working in Netflix?

Lavinia: Definitely getting to see some of the shows first. As a fan of all the shows, being in the know of what’s coming up is very, very exciting. We have so much lined up.

Belle: As a pop culture junkie, it’s the ability to tap into anything that’s relevant. I think our shows right now are so relevant, each of them has a firm place, whether it’s “The Get Down” or “Stranger Things” or “Orange is the New Black.” Everything has a place in pop culture and I love to be part of that on a daily basis.

Which shows are you obsessed with right now?

Belle: For me it’s “Black Mirror.”

Lavinia: Same.

Belle: “Black Mirror” and after I finished “Narcos” season 2, I felt like there was a void in my life. I was like, “So what now?”

If you can force people to watch a show on Netflix, which one would it be?

Belle: This one’s really hard. It’s like picking your favorite album.

Fine, three shows.

Lavinia: “Stranger Things” is definitely one of them just because the storytelling in that show is unbelievable and I love the cast, they’re so adorable. The ’80s throwback is so relevant to our generation. The second one I think is “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” It’s one of those light-hearted things that I love and the third I think would be “Narcos.” It’s a good mix of the serious stuff and the light-hearted stuff.

Belle: “Narcos” is a documentary, a film, a series all rolled into one. That’s my number one. Second would be “Black Mirror,” I’m obsessed with it. Third would be “The Get Down.” It’s full of music and anyone who has been involved in the process of creating music or making art come alive should watch the show because it illustrates that struggle perfectly.

Lavinia: But that was a tough choice. I have so many other shows…

Belle: It’s just so hard.

From London to Singapore: How Netflix is Expanding Around the World

For the global television industry, there was the time before Netflix , and the time after Netflix. But what has made the company truly disruptive is how quickly it has established a physical presence globally: From Toronto to Mumbai, London to Seoul, local shooting facilities have seen their business boom when Reed Hastings comes to town.

This year, Netflix announced new long-term leases in Toronto with Cinespace Studios and Pinewood Toronto Studios, adding close to 250,000 square feet of studio and office space to the company’s Canadian footprint, which already includes a long-term lease at Martini Film Studios in British Columbia. Netflix has committed to spending at least $379 million in Canada over a five-year period. In July, Shepperton Studios inked a 10-year lease that will see Netflix take over 165,000 square feet of soundstages located just outside London in a deal that could run Netflix up to $6 million a year. Over in Mexico, Netflix has announced plans to locally produce 50 TV series and film projects , many of them at Tlanewood, the studio run by local outfit Argos.

The explosion in Netflix’s global content also has seen the company amass a sizable rental property portfolio that includes more than 30 office spaces worldwide. Since it began spreading its long-haul wings, the company has — much like the Silicon Valley tech giants with which it’s so regularly compared — been quietly leasing some of the world’s most desirable commercial real estate, both in terms of size and cost: more than $1 million a year for 12,000 square feet in London, $100,000 a month for two floors of space in Tokyo’s fashion quarter, enough space along the canals in Amsterdam for more than 300 employees and an estimated $7 million a year for a sprawling 150,000-square-foot space in Mumbai. As staff numbers continue to rise, more offices are on the horizon.

In short, whether it’s on a soundstage in Mexico or in a boardroom in Mumbai, Netflix is exporting its “disrupter” corporate ethos on a global scale. “This is completely unprecedented [and] a complete sea change, with impacts across the board on everyone in the production business, from studios and soundstages, postproduction to local talents and local broadcasters,” says Guy Bisson, research director at Ampere Analysis in London. “It’s been a huge boom, and there are no signs of it slowing down. In fact, it’s getting bigger and bigger every day.”

SILICON VALLEY (Offices)

Los Gatos, Calif., has served as Netflix’s headquarters — and Reed Hastings’ base when he’s not in L.A. — since the late 1990s. Over the years, the company has expanded its presence and now occupies 600,000 square feet, including two newly built buildings that feature collaborative workspaces for product, engineering and data scientists. Conference rooms are named after movies ( Mad Max , Taxi Driver ), and a film theme plays out on graphics on the glass walls.

LOS ANGELES (Offices)

Netflix leases multiple properties around L.A. and recently closed deals on two new spaces in Hollywood, but the crown jewel is the 300,000-square-foot HQ at Hollywood’s Sunset Bronson Studios, where it occupies all 14 floors of the ICON tower. There, guests are greeted by an immersive lobby with an 80-by-12-foot screen displaying images from the streamer’s original shows and films. Netflix’s data-driven culture also extends to the snack offerings, with each floor’s selection amended based on popularity. Employees also enjoy a stocked cereal bar and prepackaged meals by Wolfgang Puck catering.

MEXICO CITY (Studios)

While Netflix shoots all over Mexico and doesn’t have any one facility it favors with a long-term deal, Tlanewood, aka the Estudios Gabriel Garcia Marquez studios in northern Mexico City, has been a key hub for Netflix’s south-of-the-border production. Independent producer Argos operates the sprawling campus, with more than 30,000 square feet of production space, including six soundstages (two more are set to open in 2020). In total, Netflix plans to produce 50 television and film projects in Mexico — its largest international production slate in terms of sheer volume.

NEW YORK (Studios)

Plans for Netflix’s Brooklyn production hub came in April, two months after streaming competitor Amazon was pressured to pull out of its proposed Queens headquarters. The streamer has leased a 165,500-square-foot warehouse in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, where it will build six soundstages. On the corporate side, the company will be expanding, with about 100,000 square feet of new offices in Manhattan’s Flatiron District to house development, production and marketing executives.

NEW MEXICO (Studios)

In October, Netflix made its first purchase of a production studio complex, paying $30 million to acquire and improve ABQ Studios in Albuquerque — a very good deal considering the facilities, which include eight soundstages, production offices and a backlot, cost $91 million to build. Additionally, under the Local Economic Development Act, New Mexico said it would provide up to $10 million in government funding, while the city of Albuquerque committed up to $4.5 million. The streamer has said it will bring upward of $1 billion in production money to the facility and provide up to 1,000 jobs a year.

TORONTO (Studios)

This year Netflix unveiled plans to take on close to 250,000 square feet of studio and office space in Toronto as part of its agreement to invest a minimum of $380 million over a five-year period in Canada’s entertainment industry. Netflix will take over long-term leases encompassing 164,000 square feet — four soundstages, office space and support space — at Cinespace Studios. The facilities, owned by PortsToronto, became operational in June, with Netflix understood to have an initial 18-month lease with an option for a further 18 months. Netflix also has four soundstages leased at Pinewood Toronto Studios, amounting to an additional 84,580 square feet. Both Toronto facilities will host shoots for upcoming Netflix series and films, including the horror anthology series Guillermo del Toro Presents Ten After Midnight and the film Let It Snow .

MADRID (Studios)

Netflix opened its first European production hub in July 2018 in Ciudad de la Tele (TV City) in Tres Cantors, taking over three 12,900-square-foot soundstages (with an option to expand as the studio grows) and making the facility the center for the company’s booming slate of Spanish-language original content. Netflix has a multiyear lease with Grupo Secuoya, which operates the site. The streamer says it employed more than 13,000 cast, crew and extras on more than 20 Netflix original productions in Spain in 2018 — series such as Cable Girls and Elite and feature films like Isabel Coixet’s Elisa & Marcela — with much more to come.

PARIS (Offices)

After quietly closing its fledgling Parisian office in 2015, Netflix is set to reboot its presence by the year’s end. The company has leased a 27,000-square-foot space in the recently renovated Square Edouard VII (neighbors include Airbnb, Facebook, Google and Twitter). Set among classic Haussmann buildings on a quiet cul-de-sac just steps from the grand Opera Garnier and the Intercontinental Hotel, rents go for upward of $900 a square foot (Netflix’s new space could ring up around $2 million a year). The offices also will overlook two movie theaters (which won’t play Netflix films, of course), though Netflix is expected to build its own screening rooms.

MUMBAI (Offices)

Netflix’s 90 or so Indian staff currently work from a temporary office in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai’s upscale business district (also home to Google, JP Morgan and the U.S. consulate). It’s a stone’s throw from Bandra, awash in trendy restaurants, bars and even the residence of Shah Rukh Khan (who just happens to have a couple of upcoming co-productions with Netflix). However, unconfirmed media reports claim that the company already has signed a nine-year lease on an enormous 150,000-square-foot space over two floors in a nearby commercial tower that would set it back around $7 million a year.

SYDNEY (Offices)

Having established a physical Australia/New Zealand presence only in May, Netflix’s 10-strong local team is currently based in a WeWork space in the heart of Sydney’s central business district (where similar small, private offices start at $1,000 per month) while it searches for something more permanent. What remains to be seen is whether it will take residence at or near the Fox Studios Australia, the largest studio facility in the Southern Hemisphere and now owned by rival Disney.

SINGAPORE (Offices)

Last year, Netflix joined the flock of major global entities — including Facebook — to sign leases in the shimmering new Marina One development, taking a 40,000-square-foot space for its Asia-Pacific headquarters. The hallmark feature here is the location, with open offices overlooking the sea and offering the perfect viewpoint for the annual fireworks show on National Day.

LONDON (Offices)

Eschewing the long-standing trend of setting up shop in the creative hipster hub of East London, in late 2017 Netflix signed a lease on 12,000 square feet of space in a swanky new mixed-use complex in Fitzrovia, just off the shopping hub of Oxford Circus. Comparable rents would suggest the company is forking over around $1.17 million a year for the spot. More than 120 employees occupy one floor, and as others join, it’s already preparing to spill out onto a second.

LONDON (Studios)

Netflix’s announcement that it will be taking a long-term lease on the Shepperton Film Studios made it clear the company plans to invest a significant amount of the $1 billion to $1.3 billion it has committed to European productions in the U.K. Financial details weren’t disclosed, but going rates suggest the Shepperton lease could run Netflix up to $6 million a year.

AMSTERDAM (Offices)

When international for Netflix meant little more than Europe, this was the central outpost of most non-U.S. operations. Set right beside a canal on the edge of the historic De Pijp neighborhood, the EMEA headquarters employs more than 300 staff and takes over several floors in an office that boasts health-focused food — often themed — and free alcohol Thursday and Friday afternoons. In keeping with the local vibe, Netflix bikes can be loaned out to staff.

SEOUL (Offices)

Located in the Jongno downtown district, Netflix’s Korean HQ — which only opened its doors in June — takes over floors 20 and 21 in the brand-new Centro Polis tower (a typical commercial space costs more than $400,000 per year) and offers views of Insa-dong, known for traditional tea houses and antique stores.

TOKYO (Offices)

Netflix occupies two upper floors of a sleek mid-rise commercial tower in Tokyo’s Aoyama fashion quarter. The company began in 2015 with one level of about 7,100 square feet but took over a second in 2018. Comparable properties suggest Netflix is paying at least $100,000 per month. Spacious by Japanese standards, the office’s most striking feature is a large open-plan kitchen and dining area that boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and huge sliding doors opening out onto a balcony that overlooks the Aoyama’s most iconic landmarks, such as Herzog and de Meuron’s award-winning Prada building. Staff is treated to catered lunches daily — during a Hollywood Reporter visit, the chef was serving a healthy, kale-heavy version of taco rice, an Okinawan dish inspired by Mexican American food — as well as an expensively stocked drinks bar, including some high-end Japanese teas.

WHAT IS NETFLIX?

Netflix first launched its streaming service in the United States in 2007.

Members pay a monthly subscription and it is available on any device that has an Internet connection, which includes smartphones, smart TVs such as Apple TV and game consoles such as the PlayStation.

Before its launch in Singapore, some local users managed to access Netflix by using virtual private network services that unlocks geo-restricted content and entertainment to Singapore users.

These include online providers such as Unotelly and Unlocator and local Internet Service Providers such as Viewqwest and My Republic.

Netflix creates its own content with their own original series, including Marvel's Daredevil and comedy Orange Is The New Black. A catalogue of licensed TV shows and movies is also available.

WHAT ABOUT NON-ENGLISH CONTENT?

A search for Indian actor Salman Khan revealed three of his old films, the latest of which is Hum Saath - Saath Hain (1999).

The only Chinese content available appeared to be 2011 TV series Empresses in the Palace.

A Netflix spokesman said: "We will add more to the Netflix catalogue in Singapore as the service grows in popularity and we better understand what our members want to watch in each region."

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Subscribers here will pay between $10.98 and $16.98 a month, which is comparable to prices in the US.

It is possible to share an account with up to four people watching Netflix at the same time.

A Netflix account also allows you to create up to five user profiles so that family members sharing an account can each enjoy a customised experience.

One screen (standard definition): $10.98

Two screens simultaneously (high definition): $13.98

Four screens simultaneously (high definition + ULTRA HD 4K: $16.98)

A Netflix spokesman said that members can pay with an international credit card, through the iTunes app store and via Paypal.

"Over time, we aim to add local payment options around the world," he said.

HOW DOES CONTENT HERE COMPARE TO THE US?

Former veteran tech journalist Oo Gin Lee noted that wildly popular series House of Cards and Breaking Bad are not available to Netflix subscribers in Singapore.

"There is a general consensus that the US market has the best content. It could get better over time, but for now, I feel that content is limited," said the Netflix subscriber of three years.

A Netflix spokesman said that they aim to offer "a fully global service with a global catalogue".

He said: "However the world of content licensing has traditionally been very fragmented and regionalised. It will take some time to get to an offering that's the same everywhere."

HOW WILL IT AFFECT PAY TV SUBSCRIBERS OF LOCAL TELCOS?

Mr Goh Seow Eng, managing director of Home, Consumer Singapore at Singtel, said: "We will be working closely with Netflix to deliver great promotions to our customers."

A StarHub spokesman said they are exploring a partnership with Netflix, so that their viewers will have the "widest selection of content with the convenience of their StarHub set-top box".

Maximizing Your Viewing Experience

Are you ready to take your Netflix game to the next level? Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your viewing experience in Singapore.

TV Shows and Dramas Galore

With Netflix, you have access to a wide variety of TV shows and dramas from all over the world. From the latest K-dramas to classic American sitcoms, there’s something for everyone. To find the perfect show to watch, try using Netflix’s hidden category codes. These codes allow you to browse specific genres or sub-genres that may not be visible on the main menu. You can find a list of these codes online, or try using a browser extension like Super Netflix to access them directly on the site.

Movies to Munch On

No Netflix binge session is complete without some tasty snacks to munch on. To make the most of your movie-watching experience, choose snacks that are easy to eat and won’t leave a mess on your couch. Some great options include popcorn, chips, and bite-sized candies. You can also try making your own snacks at home, like homemade popcorn or trail mix.

Download and Go

One of the best things about Netflix is the ability to download shows and movies to watch offline. This is especially useful when you’re on the go and don’t have access to Wi-Fi. To download a show or movie, simply click the download button next to the title. You can then watch it later on your phone or tablet, even without an internet connection.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your Netflix viewing experience in Singapore. So grab your snacks, find your favorite show, and get ready to binge-watch to your heart’s content!

Enhancing Accessibility

Netflix Singapore is dedicated to enhancing accessibility for all viewers. Here are some features that make it easier for you and your family to enjoy your favorite shows and movies.

Family and Household Sharing

Sharing a Netflix account with your family means you can all enjoy your favorite shows and movies without having to pay for multiple accounts. Netflix allows you to create up to five profiles, each with its own personalized recommendations, watch list, and viewing history. This feature makes it easy for everyone in your household to have their own personalized Netflix experience.

Streaming Across Devices

Netflix Singapore allows you to stream your favorite shows and movies across multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs. This means you can watch your favorite shows and movies from anywhere, at any time, as long as you have an internet connection.

Moreover, Netflix Singapore offers a range of accessibility features that make it easier for people with hearing and visual impairments to enjoy their favorite shows and movies. These features include closed captions, audio descriptions, and assistive listening systems. Closed captions make it easier for people with hearing impairments to follow the dialogue, while audio descriptions provide a narration of the visual elements of a show or movie for people with visual impairments. Assistive listening systems allow people with hearing impairments to use headsets, hearing aids, headphones, or neck loops to listen to TV shows or movies they’re watching.

In conclusion, Netflix Singapore is committed to enhancing accessibility for all viewers. With its family and household sharing feature, streaming across devices, and accessibility features, Netflix Singapore makes it easy for everyone to enjoy their favorite shows and movies, regardless of their abilities.

Navigating Through Restrictions

As a Netflix Singapore user, you might have noticed that the content library available to you is limited compared to that of other countries. This is because of content rights and censorship laws in Singapore. However, there are ways to overcome these restrictions and access more content.

Overcoming Censorship with VPNs

One way to bypass censorship and access geo-restricted content is by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN encrypts your internet connection and routes it through a server located in a different country, making it appear as if you are accessing the internet from that location. This allows you to access content that is not available in your region.

In the case of Netflix, using a VPN can give you access to a wider range of TV shows and movies that are not available in Singapore. However, it’s important to note that Netflix has been cracking down on VPN usage in recent years, so not all VPNs may work with the platform.

To use a VPN with Netflix, you need to subscribe to a VPN service and connect to a server in a country where the content you want to watch is available. Some popular VPN services that work with Netflix include ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark.

In conclusion, if you’re looking to access more content on Netflix Singapore, using a VPN can be a viable solution. However, it’s important to choose a reliable VPN service and keep in mind that Netflix may block certain VPNs.

A Tour of Netflix’s Los Gatos Headquarters

A Tour of Netflix’s Los Gatos Headquarters

Array

Netflix , a popular video streaming company that allows people to watch movies and TV shows online, recently hired architecture firm Form4 Architecture to design their headquarters in Los Gatos, California.

“We created the design for Netflix to exude warm modernism at a human scale. Two buildings, totaling 241,000 square feet, are connected by a slender bridge located mid-air allowing for a free flow from building to building. The interior design blurs the distinction between work and social areas. Several types of distinct spaces were created through the use of dividers, furniture groupings, and architectural elements. Warm colors and varied textures impart a residential vibe. The overall design creates a relaxed and collaborative workspace. The architecture tastefully showcases what building technology can do to convey beauty in the world of tectonics. Layering, extrusion, and interlocking of volumes are three prime design techniques adopted to let natural light reveal the architecture to its full form. The buildings are designed to be delicate and genteel, with a seamless relationship to light and nature. The tripartite façade has the imaginative interplay of aluminum fins, deep overhangs, and silver metal panels. The punched openings carved against the terracotta colored pre-cast panels ingeniously intertwine with the modern curtain wall system. The interiors throughout focus on the movement and connection of collaborative spaces. The double- height lobby attracts visitors with glowing light and an array of natural materials, from stone floors to wood ceilings, to hand-flamed steel panels. At the center is the first-floor cafeteria, the main social space, which offers several seating options, including communal tables made of rough-hewn wood planks and more-intimate booths. Various ceiling textures—wooden slats, glowing white acoustical fabric, and hanging red lights—delineate different gathering spaces. The cafeteria pours out into a secure landscaped courtyard between the buildings. Workspaces are open and light filled with a series of small meeting rooms playfully named after popular movies. Supergraphics on the glass walls carry on the specific movie theme while artfully lending some visual privacy to the fish-bowl rooms. A primary palette of blue, yellow, and red activates the space, contrasting well with natural wood accents. Open collaborative spaces are separated by working partitions with dry-erase surfaces for brainstorming. Individual sanctuaries are designed for different effect. Glowing light benches are surrounded by wood-slat walls for a meditative retreat. A raised gathering space dubbed the “coliseum” sports three tiers of curved upholstered banquettes surrounding an inner circle; the discussion leader stands in the middle to make eye contact with the group. Natural materials come together in a casual conference space with one wall lined in stone and another in wood slats wrapping from wall to ceiling. The garden defines the general experience of this project. Mature redwood trees ranging from 40 feet to 100 feet in height planted along a linear garden add to the bucolic character of the complex. They confer spatial majesty through their sheer size, with the architecture of the campus being a benevolent complement to its natural message. This project showcases modernism’s latent capacity to convey warmth and to engage building occupants and daily visitors in an experience full of profound emotional meaning,” says Form4 Architecture

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know this sui generis documentary film has been making waves worldwide. Deemed as Singapore's first road movie by Singapore-born, LA-based filmmaker Sandi Tan, Shirkers follows a group of cinephiles – including a young Sandi – shooting an uncompleted movie in 1992. But what makes this Sundance Award-winning film even more intriguing is the fact that the footage was stolen before it could be completed. Fast forward to twenty years later, the unseen footage made back into Sandi's hands and the rest is, shall we say, history.

Singapore's motormouthed wisecracker Fakkah Fuzz landed his very own stand-up special on Netflix early this year – quite an achievement in the local comedy scene if you ask us. A Yellow Bird

A Yellow Bird

A debut film feature by local award-winning filmmaker K. Rajagopal, A Yellow Bird tells the story of a homeless ex-convict who is seeking to reunite with his family yet struggling to integrate back into society. As he carries on with life, he starts to form an unlikely bond with a Chinese sex worker while acting as her bodyguard. The grim drama featuring  Sivakumar  Palakrishnan , Huang Lu and Seema Biswas was also selected for the International Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival.

Netflix available in Singapore: What you need to know about your Netflix SG subscription

netflix office tour singapore

SINGAPORE - Netflix has opened its library of TV shows and movies without cuts to viewers in Singapore. Here are some things you can expect.

What is Netflix?

The service streams popular movies and TV shows for a flat monthly fee and delivers content over the Internet. This allows users to watch shows wherever they want, without sticking to a broadcast schedule.

How do I get connected?

Users can view Netflix's catalogue of movies and TV shows on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, laptops as well as via set-top boxes with the Netflix app installed. Users need a broadband connection on these devices to stream the movies. In Singapore, it will cost between $11 and $17 a month to access Netflix's library, depending on how many devices are sharing the account. There will be a free one-month trial for new members. To sign up, go to www.netflix.com/sg/

What is in its show catalogue?

Netflix creates its own content and original series including comedy Orange Is The New Black, and drama series Marco Polo. Orange Is The New Black weaves a tale about life in a women's prison and features nudity and drug use, while Marco Polo is known for its casual depiction of female nudity and sexual orgies. These adult titles are streamed uncensored. Hence, they are put behind a parental lock, which requires the user to enter a personal identification number (PIN) set by the account owner.

A catalogue of licensed TV shows and movies is also available. These include uncensored versions of Spartacus, Pulp Fiction and A Clockwork Orange.

What genres of content cannot be viewed on Netflix SG?

1. South Korean TV dramas

2. Japanese anime titles including Naruto, Pokemon, Hunter x Hunter and Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works

3. Kungfu movies such as those by Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Stephen Chow

4. British TV series such as Sherlock, Agatha Christie's Poirot and Doctor Who

5. American TV series Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Netflix's own House Of Cards

Is the content missing due to censorship?

A Netflix spokesman said the rights for some titles, such as House Of Cards, had been sold to other partners in the region. Other rights, such as those for Hong Kong action films and Japanese anime, were picked up only for the United States. Moving forward, Netflix said it will move to pick up global rights for all its streaming content.

How do I access overseas versions of Netflix?

Netflix restricts content distribution by region. For instance, the American and British websites serve only their respective markets.

Before Netflix's local launch, people in Singapore were accessing Netflix's United States website by using virtual private network (VPN) services that mask their real locations.

VPN services are available online from providers such as UnoTelly and Unlocator. Some Singapore Internet service providers like ViewQwest and MyRepublic also sell VPN services as part of their broadband offerings.
