La Romana becomes Norwegian Cruise Line Home Port

La Romana cruise terminal

The Norwegian Sky cruise liner has initiated operations utilizing the Dominican Republic as a Home Port, setting sail from the La Romana tourist terminal, aligning with one of the key objectives of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom) to establish the country as a prominent Cruise Hub in the region.

Jean Luis Rodríguez, the director of the Dominican Port Authority, expressed enthusiastic endorsement for the Dominican Republic's emergence as a preferred port of call for Norwegian cruises departing from La Romana. He emphasized that this achievement solidifies the nation's stature as a premier maritime destination, offering unparalleled experiences to cruise visitors by blending the allure of La Romana's beauty with the top-notch service quality at our port, thus fortifying the maritime and tourism sectors of the country.

The Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, renowned globally, will set sail from La Romana, with ticket prices ranging between US$1,500.00 and US$1,900.00. The entity has slated five departures for 2024, commencing from January 29 to February 12, 2024, followed by subsequent departures through April 1, 2024, including a voyage during the Easter period.

Norwegian Sky's amenities are tailored to ensure passengers relish a voyage brimming with entertainment, leisure, gastronomy, and relaxation.

Cruise Itineraries:

- The 12-day cruise departing from La Romana in January 2024 will encompass stops at Punta Cana (La Romana), Bonaire, Curacao, Aruba, Grenada, Kingstown, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Antigua, Saint Kitts, Saint Martin, and Tortola.

- The 9-day cruise spanning March to April 2024, embarking from La Romana and conducting coastal navigation within the island, will include stops at Punta Cana (La Romana), Cabo Rojo (Pedernales), Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Grenada, Barbados, Saint Lucia, and Tortola.

The Port Authority underlined that due to the diverse terminals across the Dominican Republic, Norwegian Sky cruises with a duration of 9 days will navigate through the country's tourist terminals, including La Romana in the Province of La Romana, and Cabo Rojo in the Province of Pedernales (currently under construction).

Furthermore, the ship has previously made stops between La Romana, at the port of La Romana, and Amber Cove, situated in the province of Puerto Plata, in collaboration with Carnival Cruise Line.

What to Do in Puerto Plata on a Cruise (Big List + Tips & Things to Know)

Sitting on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata (translation: Silver Port) sits right in the middle between the tip of Cuba and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The area is steeped in history dating back literally to Christopher Columbus, who founded nearby La Isabela as the first European settlement in North America in 1493.

View of Puerto Plata from Isabel de Torres

Today the area is a bustling city of approximately 150,000 that’s also become a popular cruise destination with multiple ports. If your cruise includes a stop in Puerto Plata, then you might be wondering what to do during your stay. We’ll cover lots of options of what to experience in Puerto Plata on your cruise, along with some helpful information about what to expect on your day in port.

Overview & What Puerto Plata Like?

Whereas many port cities in this area of the world can seem like they are there only to serve tourists, Puerto Plata is different. Tourism is a major part of the economy, but it’s also a real town.

As you would expect given the location along the coast, the beach plays a big role in the things to do and see. However, there is also history, natural scenery, and dramatic landscapes to enjoy (along with plenty of touristy things too!).

Map showing location of cruise ports in Puerto Plata

There are two different cruise ports in the area. If you are sailing on a Carnival Corporation line (Carnival, Princess, etc.), then you will dock at Amber Cove. This is a dedicated port area about six miles from the center of Puerto Plata. Built in the mid-2010s, this port is definitely touristy with manicured grounds, a pool/bar area for passengers, shops, and restaurants. You could theoretically spend the entire day here and be entertained.

The second port is the Taino Bay port, located right near the heart of the city. This port also offers the typical touristy shopping port area to passengers, but offers easy access to the sights of the city center as well.

As for the city itself, it offers up a very Latin feel. It’s bustling with tourists and locals going around the city by car, motorcycle, or walking. Buildings are built almost to the street and densely packed, as is common in older cities with Spanish influence, providing a lot to see in a small amount of space.

The surrounding areas are lush and mountainous, giving a natural beauty to the area. It’s also a chance to see the real Dominican Republic in that there are parts that are drop-dead beautiful combined with poorer areas that make you appreciate what you have at home.

That all combines to make Puerto Plata a unique place that offers an experience we found much more interesting than more “sanitized” cruise ports.

Getting Around Puerto Plata

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

If you plan to leave the port to explore, you have a few options for getting around.

Walking: If you dock at the port near the city center, then you can simply walk many places. For instance, from the port to Parque Central, the walk is just about 15 minutes. It’s another 10-15 minutes to spots like the beachfront and even less time to the famous Umbrella Street and Paseo de Dona Blanca (more on these spots below).

Taxi: If you don’t want to walk or you are docked at Amber Cove, then a taxi is an option. Just know that rates are expensive. A sign posted shows the fixed rates. A ride from Amber Cove to Puerto Plata is $35 each way for up to five passengers. That’s for a trip that’s only about six miles. Still, given Amber Cove’s setup, there really isn’t another option unless taking an excursion.

Shore Excursions: Booking a shore excursion to go out and explore the area? Then your transportation will be included in the trip. Given that the cost of a taxi is fairly high, it’s something that you should consider when pricing out things to do. Having a ride to and from the port included isn’t just convenient, it can save you money.

Things to Do in Puerto Plata on a Cruise

Below we cover a number of things to do while you are in port on your cruise.

Visiting Amber Cove

Sign in front of ship at Amber Cove

Sailing on Carnival (or a sister cruise line)? Then you’ll dock at Amber Cove ( see our guide to the port here ). The port area is built as a literal playground for passengers. On one side is a number of shops to explore, a photo opp in front of the ship, and restaurants. The other side includes a large pool area with loungers, a swim-up bar, zipline, waterslides, and a splash pad for small kids. There are also other amenities to rent, from a wi-fi day pass to kayaks to cabanas. In short, you can spend your entire day here in the shadow of the ship if you want.

Visiting Taino Bay

Sailing another cruise line like NCL, Royal Caribbean, MSC, or Virgin Voyages? Then you will dock at the Taino Bay port, right near the center of Puerto Plata. Like Amber Cove, it also provides a lot for passengers to enjoy without going far. There are shops, restaurants, and bars, along with a pool area and man-made beach (though no open water swimming) that offers views of the ship. If you’re wanting to stay close to the ship, this is an easy way to spend the day. Just know that the port area can get crowded.

Isabel de Torres (Cristo Redentor Statue)

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

Just south of Puerto Plata sits Isabel de Torres — a tree-covered mountain that overlooks the city and the sea. An excursion can take you here (or take the cable car, covered below). It’s a national park and features a walk through beautiful forest and manicured grounds. Here atop the mountain it can be breezy and 20 degrees cooler than at sea level, so be sure to dress a little warmer. But the payoff is the view of the city below and the chance to see Cristo Redentor — a statue of Christ with arms spread that watches over the port.

Umbrella Street

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

Located near Parque Central, if you’re wanting an “Instagram” spot, this is one of two must-sees. It’s a small cross street that’s closed to traffic and a metal frame structure has been built over it. There, dozens of colorful umbrellas are hung above the street creating a unique area that’s pedestrian-friendly, with small shops to explore, colorful umbrellas, and beautiful bougainvillea plants adding to the atmosphere.

Paseo de Dona Blanca

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

We mentioned one of two “must-sees” for the most photo-worthy sports. The first is Umbrella Street. The second is Paseo de Dona Blanca. It’s literally a half-block from Umbrella Street, and right near the center of town, making both spots popular to visit at once. What’s special about this alleyway is that it’s pink. We don’t mean a little pink. We mean from the roof of buildings down to the walkway, everything is painted a bright pink. It’s a short walk through the alley, but it’s a unique spot that you can’t miss.

Teleferico to Isabel de Torres (Cable Car)

We mentioned Isabel de Torres — the mountain that overlooks the city with stunning views. There are two ways up. First, you can drive up, or you can take a cable car (also known as the Teleferico). The entrance is about a mile from the cruise port in town. From here you can hop aboard the car for the ride to the top, providing stunning views as you do. Once there, you’ll be right at the Christ the Redeemer statue and can tour the mountain top before heading back down.

Ocean World

You can think of Ocean World as a Puerto Plata version of SeaWorld. It’s a popular spot to enjoy with families as there is lots for kids to do and it sits roughly in the middle between the two cruise ports in the area. You can purchase a day pass (or book an excursion through the cruise line) that gives you access to snorkeling, animal shows, beach, pool, and waterslides. In addition, there are other opportunities to do things like swim with dolphins, or shark and sea lion encounters for an extra cost.

Playa Neptuno

In Puerto Plata there are plenty of beaches — the entire city sits on the coast. But one of the neatest is Playa Neptuno. That’s because sitting off the coast is a small island about 1,000 feet from shore. There is an imposing statue of Neptune erected that looks back over the beach. Perhaps best of all, this beach area is much calmer and quieter than the busy port areas if you’re looking for a place to swim.

Fort San Felipe

Fort San Felipe

We’ve mentioned the history in Puerto Plata, but unfortunately much has been lost to time. One spot that remains is Fortaleza San Felipe. It sits overlooking the Taino Bay cruise port, and when it was built in 1577, it served to protect the harbor from pirates. These days you can tour the fort or just explore the park that surrounds it, with views of the ships, the ocean, and lots of green space.

Amber Museum

Jurassic Park fans may remember one of the opening scenes where a mine in the Dominican Republic finds a piece of amber with a mosquito trapped inside. That led to the cloning of dinosaurs and the invention of the park. These days, amber is a big part of Puerto Plata’s history and culture. You’ll find it for sale in many shops. If you want to know more, you can check out the Amber Museum , which includes a chance to see pieces with historic animals, plants, and insects encased inside.

Parque Central

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

In most Latin American cities, there is a central plaza that serves as the heart of the city. Puerto Plata fits that bill as well. Parque Central is an open square with seating, vendors, historic statues, and all lined by Spanish colonial architecture including a massive church. Have a seat and you can people watch to your heart’s content. It also serves as a great starting point for exploring the downtown area.

Catamaran Sail & Snorkel

Sure there is lots of history and culture in the area. But when you’re on a cruise, sometimes you just want to party a bit. In that case, look for shore excursions being offered by the cruise line for catamaran sailing with snorkeling. These trips will pick you up, take you on a catamaran ride to a snorkel spot. After a round of snorkeling, it’s back on the ship for lunch, open bar, and music. It’s a fun way to spend the day on the water having a great time.

All-Inclusive Beach Day

Another way to spend the day is with a shore excursion to one of the many all-inclusive resorts in the area. Check your cruise line’s listing of offers. They will likely have 2-3 different options that include time at a beach with food and drinks served. It can be an easy way to spend some time enjoying yourself without the crowds that you’ll find in the port areas.

Damajagua Waterfalls

One of the natural wonders of the area is Damajagua Waterfalls. If you’re wanting an adventure along with something that you can’t do anywhere else, this is it. Your cruise line will have an excursion to the area, which takes you into the forest. You’ll be given a helmet and life jacket, hike into the area where waterfalls and natural pools of water are found. From there, you can slide down the falls or jump off the small cliffs (there are also ladders available). It’s not ideal for small kids or older folks, but those looking for adventure will love it.

Puerto Plata Cruise Tips & Things to Know

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

If you’re visiting Puerto Plata on a cruise, here are some tips and things to know that can make your day run smoother.

Factor in Ride Costs on Shore Excursions

If you’re looking at an excursion and wondering if you can do it cheaper on your own… likely not. That’s because taxi prices in the area are ridiculously high. A ride from Amber Cove to the city center is only about 6-7 miles but costs $70 round trip. Keep that in mind when considering what you plan to do for the day.

Free Wi-fi in Port

If you’re in port, look around for shops or restaurants offering wi-fi services. As a perk to get you in the door, many offer up wi-fi access for no charge, giving you a chance to check email or get in touch back home for cheap.

Photo Opportunities Are Everywhere

If you want to get a picture in front of the ship, you’re in luck. Both ports offer lots of opportunities to get a souvenir shot. Amber Cove, for instance, features a massive sign that you can stand between, with the cruise ship over your shoulder.

An Easy Rule for Exchange Rates

The U.S. dollar is widely accepted in Puerto Plata, but many things are priced only in Dominican pesos. If you’re wondering about the exchange rate, it’s currently around 55 pesos to 1 dollar. While it’s not perfect, an easy rule of thumb is to just double the price in Dominican pesos and then put a decimal point two places in. So if something is priced at 350 pesos, double it to 700 and then put a decimal two spots in for $7.00. A t-shirt costing 1,300 pesos comes out to roughly $26.00 in U.S. dollars. It’s not perfect, but an easy way to ballpark costs.

Heading to Explore Town? Take Screenshots of a Map Before You Leave

One easy thing to do in port is simply walk around the downtown area, exploring on your own or seeing the sights like Paseo de Dona Blanco or the town square. If you decide to do this, it’s smart to take screenshots of the area on your mapping app for your phone. This way, even if you don’t have service you will have a map to refer to in order to get around town.

Try to Visit Umbrella Street Early

One of the most popular sights in the city is Umbrella Street, but if you’re going to visit, then it’s a good idea to try and go earlier in the day. Given its popularity, the place can fill up in the afternoon when everyone is out and about. An earlier visit should give you more time for pictures without having too many other people in the shot.

Public Beaches Are Everywhere

If you just want to hang on the beach, then there are a number of public beaches around. However, the port areas themselves don’t offer public beach access. You’ll have to go outside the port to hit the sand and surf. You can walk the avenue that runs along the coast until you find a spot you like. As well, many beaches have a number of restaurants and beach bars where you can also have a bite to eat in the shade.

Amber Cove Passengers Will Need a Ride Anywhere

While passengers in Taino Bay can simply walk into town, if you’re docked at Amber Cove (for Carnival ships), then no such luck. Here the walk from the ship to out of the port’s gate is roughly half a mile. And after that there isn’t anything else within walking distance. That means if you’re wanting to go explore, you’ll need to pay a taxi fare or book an excursion.

You Can Easily Spend All Day in Port Areas (But You’ll Miss Out)

Not feeling adventurous? Or maybe you just want to have a low-key day. In that case, you absolutely can have a full day without leaving the port area. Both Taino Bay and Amber Cove offer areas for passengers tp enjoy without ever leaving the port. This includes pools, shopping, and restaurants. To be sure, this isn’t the real Puerto Plata or Dominican Republic, and we think you’ll miss out on a lot by not getting out and exploring. But if you want it easy, it doesn’t get any easier.

Be Ready for Rain

In total, Puerto Plata gets about 60 inches of rain a year. The good news is that during the busy summer months of June-September, it’s fairly dry with only 2-3 inches of rain on average per month. But November through May see anywhere from 5 inches up to 9 inches (November and December) on average each month. In other words, if visiting in the winter, pack a rain jacket just in case.

Thank you in advance

Unsure of those prices. However, the cable car is relatively close to Taino Bay — about a 20 minute walk.

Sailing on Getaway later this year and one of the stops is Dominican Republic.I have been seeing many differing and conflicting reports as to which port will actually be used between Taino Bay and Amber Cove. Does anyone have any recent experience as to which port NCL uses now? Or does anyone know of a reliable source where this information can be found?

Cool Cruiser

Taino Bay.  NCL used Amber Cove, which is Carnival's port, temporarily while Taino Bay was being built.  It is a beautiful port area with lots to do, restaurants, bars, pools, beach etc...  We were there in January and spent the whole day there.  I have read that they have recently added on to it.

Thank You Thank You! I was hoping that was the case as Taino Bay looks to be very nice.

We were on the Getaway in April and it used at Amber Cove.  When we were on the Encore in January, it used Taino Bay.

I just looked at the timetables, for my cruise leaving 6/25 it is stating Amber Cove (also for the one the week prior at least....).

Hmmm....my October Joy cruise just says Puerto Plata DR.

That is what the Getaway cruise I am taking in November says as well. My understanding about Amber Cove is that it is mostly a Carnival port and I believe there is a 2 ship limit as to docking availabilities. The date of our visit to Dominican already shows 2 Carnival ships docked there that day...so I am hoping that for us we will end up docking at Taino...it all really is very confusing and may very well be that actual docking is possibly not known until very close to the actual cruise.

Do you mean cruisetimetables.com?  If so, they make no distinction between the Puerto Plata docking options; you can't tell from that third party web site where a ship will dock for Puerto Plata.

Best to keep checking the official Amber Cove port calendar (link below), and just hang tight.  (And iirc, there have been times when an NCL ship was showing on the Amber Cove calendar, but it docked at Taino Bay.)

BTW, the current Amber Cove port calendar does not show the Getaway or any other NCL ship there at any time from June 25 through the end of June, or in July.

You are correct about 2 ships max, and also that priority is given to Carnival corp brands (Carnival, HAL, Princess).  So if you see two of those ships scheduled there on the same date, it's unlikely NCL will be docking there, except for some last minute change.

genealogyfan

When I was there on the Epic in April, we docked in Amber Cove with another cruise line ship in that port. On the same day another Norwegian ship was at another port in the Dominican Republic.

Panhandle Couple

From previous threads last year on this subject...

The channel into Taino Bay is shallow at one point.  An NCL ship dragged bottom there last year.  It depends on the time of year and tide times for entry/exit.   NCL (and other lines) complained to the locals about getting that area dredged.  Not certain if it happened, but we did stop there this year on Escape in early March.

The port area for Taino Bay docking is tightly controlled (fenced) away from the main part of town.  It is still having additional store fronts being built.  Lots of pool areas and a lazy river, restaurants and bars and shopping.  You have a good walk through all this to get to the exit gate that leads to the center of town. We did not go into town this year, but it appeared that the walkway leading to it had been improved.

We were also there in Feb 2022 and the main town is underwhelming (but it depends on what you are looking for).  The main calling card is amber mines locally, and plenty of shops selling it to you, along with a "museum" and a historical church on main square.  Lots of moped and small motorcycle traffic, uneven streets.  Not a tourist trap (yet) and only a small area of "Colonial charm".

PLEASE,  use the guides who are at the end of the gated area. Orange shirts, with numbers on them and ID cards on lanyards.  They are hired by the government and free of charge, although we tipped nicely and ours was surprised.  They will tell you some of the history and take you to shops and the central plaza, and will keep you out of not so good areas.

Check to see status of stargasm (sp) seaweed if possible before booking a beach excursion.  It is supposed to be thick this year, and can be unpleasant if it is too thick, both on shore or in the water.

Thank you, yes, that was the site I was looking at. Good to know that info, I somehow missed it! We are on the Escape leaving Miami, 25 June.

FWIW, on the Getaway this January & we were at Amber Cove, nice Carnival owned port that's open & a shared with other cruise lines when not in use. Taxis to town & back, TB is pricey compared to other Caribbean ports, not walkable. TB is supposed to be done with deeper channel by now, making it safer for mega ships to sail & navigate without running into the bottom, i.e. Escape in 2021.

Nice duty-free shops at AC with prices lower than St. Thomas, USVi.

And you've just reminded me of one of my fun memories from this January on the Gem, when we were docked at Taino Bay (Jan. 31) while the Dawn was at Amber Cove.    @Ken the cruiser  was aboard the Dawn, and we wound up "talking" to each other via Cruise Critic, as I could see the Dawn leaving Amber Cove.  Some pics and info re Taino Bay for those who may be interested:

Haha

Here's a map from this winter of the fenced in "keep the guests safe and happy" Taino Bay playground.  We were docked much further from the entrance to this area (shown at the top right).  It's definitely walkable, but can be very sunny and hot.  There were free little open car shuttles (holding about 3 guests) that quickly took people from the ship to the entrance and back.  (Tip the drivers! 🙂  )

They do not make it easy for you to get to the street exit if you have booked a guide (as we had) or intend to walk into town on your own, or pick up a guide or taxi at the exit.

Norwegian Sky in Miami

The Norwegian Sky is set to kick off its homeporting season in the Dominican Republic.

Starting on Jan. 29, the Norwegian Cruise Line vessel will offer a series of nine- to 14-night cruises departing from La Romana.

Sailing to the Southern and the Eastern Caribbean, the port-intensive itineraries visit a series of destinations in the region, such as Tortola and St. Vincent.

The first sailing of the program sees the Norwegian Sky offering a 14-night cruise that sails to 14 different ports.

Cruising roundtrip from La Romana, the itinerary includes visits to Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Basseterre, St. Kitts; St. John’s, Antigua; Roseau, Dominica; Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; Scarborough, Tobago; St. George’s, Grenada; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curacao; and Catalina Island, in the Dominican Republic.

Extending through late April, the winter program in the Southern Caribbean also includes a repositioning cruise to Miami.

The one-way itinerary sails for three nights and features a visit to Puerto Plata before arriving in South Florida.

Once in PortMiami, the Norwegian Sky is set to resume its regular schedule of three- to nine-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean.

Following a fall season in Canada & New England, the vessel kicks off its first winter season in Asia and the Indian Ocean in November .

The program includes itineraries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Far East, Africa, the Seychelles and more.

The Norwegian Sky is set to return to the Dominican Republic for more itineraries leaving from La Romana during the winter 2025-26 winter.

Fresh off a routine drydock in the Grand Bahama shipyard, the Norwegian Sky originally entered service in 1999.

Built in Germany, the 77,000-ton ship has capacity for over 2,000 guests and boasts more than 240 balcony cabins.

Cruise tourism will have a new line from La Romana

norwegian cruise line port dominican republic

Norwegian Cruise Line is the new cruise line that will begin operations in the country in July, arriving at the port of La Romana.

President Luis Abinader stressed that the country could receive about 20 thousand tourists each month with this agreement.

“The Dominican Republic is everyone’s home. And from today, and thanks to this agreement, it will also be home to the more than 5,000 potential tourists who will be able to reach our wonderful coasts every Sunday.”

The president said that one of the most significant efforts of this government is the development of tourism.

“As you all know, one of the greatest efforts of my Government is oriented towards the development of the tourism industry, its empowerment, sustained growth, and the consolidation of the Dominican Republic as one of the most important tourist destinations in the world.”

The cruise line will restart its operations at a reduced capacity of its vessels, two stops in the Caribbean, and its mother port La Romana, where its first arrival is expected on August 15.

As part of the biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, passengers, and crew with a boarding date until October 31 will be required to be vaccinated and examined before boarding.

“Over a year after we initially suspended travel, the time has finally come when we can bring our loyal guests the news of our great cruise return. And announcing this stop in the Caribbean and the HomePort in La Romana is news that we celebrate and have been waiting for a long time,” emphasized Harry Sommer, President, and CEO of the Norwegian Cruise Line.

The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, highlighted that March represented a growth of 3.3%, achieving the arrival of the most significant number of tourists after the arrival of the pandemic to the country.

The agreements were reached through the Executive Director of the Port Authority’s intermediation, Jean Luis Rodríguez, who highlighted the importance for the country that the Norwegian Cruise Line brand uses our port and the Dominican Republic as a logistics center to convert the country at the Caribbean Hub.

“We are excited to be part of this important alliance, the arrival of Norwegian Cruise Line to the Dominican Republic as the first homeport in the Caribbean represents a great opportunity for us; and from the Port Authority, we guarantee all the necessary protocols to be our safe ports ”stated Jean Luis Rodríguez, Executive Director of the Dominican Port Authority.

Norwegian Cruises Celebrates the Float out of Norwegian Aqua

Norwegian Cruise Line marked a significant construction milestone as  Norwegian Aqua,  the first ship of the expanded Prima Plus Class, floated out of its dry dock at the shipyard in Marghera, Italy!

“We are excited to celebrate another milestone with our partners at Fincantieri, who are integral to the Prima Class journey and supporting us in evolving the amazing experience we design and deliver for our guests,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Building upon the guest-favorite features of the award-winning vessels of this class, the 10% increase in space provides us with more flexibility to deliver more offerings and more beautifully designed venues for our guests to relax and explore on board Norwegian Aqua.”

MORE ABOUT THE CEREMONY

The launch of  Norwegian Aqua  today indicates the finishing of the ship’s external construction for its debut in April 2025. In celebration, two ceremonial coins were welded into the ship as a maritime tradition, symbolizing good luck and safe passage. The ceremony also included a blessing from a local chaplain and the breaking of celebratory champagne on the ship’s hull.

ABOUT  NORWEGIAN AQUA

  • Norwegian Aqua  is 10% larger than the first two Prima Class ships built by Fincantieri, providing additional space for innovative features like the Aqua Slidecoaster, Glow Court sports complex, and Ocean Boulevard outdoor promenade.
  • The ship will also offer upscale accommodations in The Haven by Norwegian, including the first-ever Three-Bedroom Duplex Haven Suites.
  • The ship will operate seven-day Caribbean cruises departing from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas.
  • After the Caribbean season, Norwegian Aqua will offer five—and seven-day voyages to Bermuda from New York City from August to October 2025 before cruising five—and seven-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami from October 2025 through April 2026.

“We are excited to mark this significant moment with Norwegian Cruise Line as we witness the float out of Norwegian Aqua, which represents a new chapter in our long-lasting partnership,” stated Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of the Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division. “We are proud to be part of this transformative journey in which innovation, a cornerstone of our industrial plan, is one of our key points, as we strive to push boundaries and elevate industry standards.”

Norwegian’s Next Cruise Ship Floated Out at Shipyard

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and shipbuilder Fincantieri celebrated Norwegian Aqua’s successful float-out on Tuesday.

Colorful abstract mural on the bow of the norwegian aqua cruise ship, featuring whale designs, docked in a port with visible workers.

As its April 2025 debut countdown continues, top cruise line and shipyard executives attended Norwegian Aqua’s float-out in Marghera (Venice), Italy. In keeping with maritime traditions, two coins were ceremoniously welded onto the vessel before a chaplain and a champagne bottle blessed it was broken across its hull.

The Prima Plus-Class vessel has two sister ships, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima , but it will be 10% bigger than its predecessors at 156,300 gross tons and 1,056 feet. Aside from its larger size, NCL shared that there will be new amenities to look forward to.

One of the main attractions is the Aqua Slidecoaster , the first ride of its kind that combines the thrills of a rollercoaster with the wet and wild experience of a waterslide.

Norwegian Aqua float out

Dual slides three stories high will offer two different routes that wind around the ship’s funnel. The highly publicized ride will replace the go-karts found on the smaller Prima-Class vessels.

In addition to the Slidecoaster, the new ship will have a digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor (Glow Court), the biggest outdoor promenade with 360-degree views (Ocean Boulevard), new restaurants , and NCL’s first three-bedroom suites.

Norwegian Aqua will head to the Caribbean

Norwegian Aqua Float out

When it enters service in April 2025, Norwegian Aqua will sail to the Caribbean with a guest capacity of 3,571 people. It will begin its first cruise season with 7-day sailings from Port Canaveral, stopping at destinations like Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; and the NCL-owned Great Stirrup Cay in The Bahamas.

From August to October 2025, guests can sail on 5- and 7-day itineraries from New York to Bermuda. It will then homeport in PortMiami from October 2025 to April 2026.

Norwegian Cruise Line And Fincantieri Celebrate Float Out of All-New Norwegian Aqua™

The float out took place at fincantieri’s marghera, italy shipyard and marks a significant construction milestone for the first ship in the next-generation prima plus class.

Norwegian Aqua - Float Out

Norwegian Cruise Line   (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, along with its partners at Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilding company, today commemorated the float out of Norwegian Aqua ™ , the first of the expanded Prima Plus Class, from its dry dock at the shipyard in Marghera (Venice), Italy, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the vessel made contact with the water.

Today's launching of Norwegian Aqua signifies the completion of the external work done on the ship readying it for its April 2025 debut.  To celebrate this milestone, two ceremonial coins were welded into Norwegian Aqua in maritime tradition, which historically symbolized an offering to ancient gods and goddesses of the sea in exchange for good luck and safe passage for the vessel.  The ceremony was followed by a blessing by a local chaplain and celebratory champagne breaking across the ship's hull.

At 156,300 gross tons and a length that spans 1,056 feet, Norwegian Aqua will be 10% larger than the first two Prima Class vessels, which also feature the craftmanship of Fincantieri, providing more space and more innovative offerings including the world’s first-ever hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, the Aqua Slidecoaster; a new digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor, Glow Court; and NCL’s most expansive 360-degree outdoor promenade, Ocean Boulevard, to date. The ship will also boast luxurious accommodations in The Haven by Norwegian ® , including NCL’s first-ever Three-Bedroom Duplex Haven Suites.
