Hot dogs, pizza, tacos… in New York City you can find food trucks and stands selling some of the most emblematic budget meals in the world. Wandering the streets means discovering new flavors and ways of enjoying food like a local. But aside from that, New York is famous for its street food and the culture that comes with it.

Street food in New York is an experience you shouldn’t miss. Check out our picks for your next visit!

When you think of New York street food, you immediately picture a hot dog stand in the middle of 5th Avenue. Hot dogs are to New York what croissants are to Paris and what pizza is to Napoles. When in the city, you need to try this quick and cheap snack as you walk around the streets.

Hot dog stands are spread across New York, and you will find one in pretty much every corner you turn, along with pretzels and beverages to complement your meal.

Sabrett Hot Dogs

One of the most popular hot dog stands is Sabrett Hot Dogs near Central Park. Add both ketchup and mustard for a fulfilling experience.

You didn’t think we would leave pizza off this list, did you? Pizza is such an extensive category of New York street food that we wrote an entire article about it! Make sure to bookmark Best Pizza in NYC: The Definitive Guide for your next trip.

From square-shaped “pizza in reverse” at L&B Spumoni Gardens to the anchovy pizza pie at Louie & Ernie’s, the Big Apple has more than a few places to sink your teeth into an amazing slice.

A runner-up to the hot dog, taco stands are also a favorite part of the New York street food experience. Most of them are Tex-Mex style, filled with juicy meat and other ingredients complementing the fatty filling from pork carnitas , chicken, or carne asada . You can find taco stands all over the city, and there are some famous ones that you shouldn’t miss.

Los Tacos No.1

Los Tacos No.1 is the most famous street-food style tacos in New York. They have different locations around the city, and you will need to get in line to get yours. Don’t worry; it’s worth it. Other well-known taco places are Tacos El Bronco II , Tacos el Chicken (120 Beverley Rd, Brooklyn), and Tacos La Carcachita (Wyckoff Ave &, Palmetto St, Brooklyn), all of which offer hard and soft shell wonders. Birria-Landia , another famous option, was even said by The New York Times to have changed the taco landscape in the city.

Ever bumped into a line of people wrapped around the block in New York? This likely means that they are waiting to get a plate from a Halal food stand. Halal is an Islamic dietary law where the meat is slaughtered and prepared in a particular manner. In New York, Halal street food means chicken and lamb gyros, salads, and spiced rice drizzled with a creamy sauce similar to tzatziki.

The Halal Guys and Royal Grill Halal Food

The Halal Guys and Royal Grill Halal Food are very popular all around the city, serving mouth-watering bowls of food perfect for a hefty lunch on a weekday. For some cheap Mediterranean or Arabic flavors, any Halal stand will do the trick!

Hungry for more New York street food? Check out our honorable mentions for must-eat options around the city:

Divine Flavored Food Truck

The Divine Flavored Food Truck brings West African dishes to the New York street food landscape. Located in front of the Nigerian Embassy, its strategic positioning serves its mission of introducing classic African breakfast and lunch dishes to the west. In the morning, try the akara , a fried bean paste with onions and salt. For lunch, go for the green vegetable stew known as elegusi. The dun dun , or fried yam strips, work as a perfect snack during an afternoon office break.

Jerk Shack Caribbean

Late-night munchies have found an exotic home in New York, straight from Jamaican cuisine. Jerk Shack Caribbean is perfect for those craving Jamaican BBQ jerk chicken, vegan platters, or curry goat. Build a bowl of fresh vegetables and juicy meat, and enjoy the authentic flavors of the Caribbean.

Calexico is one of the few stands in the city that sells traditional Mexican foods. Although they have a Californian touch, most dishes come straight from the original Mexican food repertoire. Smalls carts spread all over the city offer dishes like burritos and tacos, chipotle-seasoned pork with melted cheddar cheese, and even bowls of rice, beans, and fish.

College students seem to like Southern Indian food, and the NY Dosas food truck might be why this has become so popular. Located on the corner of Washington Square Park, this truck enchants NYU students looking for a quick bite on a weekday afternoon. Vegan dosas, masalas, and warm samosas bring comfort during mid-terms, and the lines that build in front of NY Dosas prove that these little vegetable-filled crepes are delicious and super affordable.

Uncle Gussy

What started as another hot dog and pretzel stand on Park Avenue has become one of the most famous Greek food stands in New York. Uncle Gussy’s serves authentic Greek dishes like keftedes, spanakopita, kokkinisto , and other delicacies prepared under a family-run business, with secret recipes under their sleeves. Fresh Greek salads and stuffed pita bread always win over the crowds.

Makina Ethiopian Food

Makina Ethiopian Food mixes Eritrean and Italian culinary heritage with classic Ethiopian dishes. This may be the perfect spot for those with dietary restrictions–there are plenty of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options on the menu. For the health-conscious, building a bowl of injera flatbread with red lentil stew and chicken is a perfect way to fill up during lunchtime. At this food truck, you will discover new flavors that might become your new favorite thing.

Sweet Street Food

Nuts 4 nuts.

Nuts 4 Nuts is a line of food trucks spread all over New York, a staple of busy areas like Columbus Circle and Herald Square. Going strong since 1993, they are the perfect combination of French roasted pralines and Argentinean love for mellow sweetness. You can smell the cinnamony baked aromas of pistachio and chestnuts from a mile away. Walk towards it and find honey-roasted almonds, pecan, peanuts, and cashews at super affordable prices. You can enjoy any of these foods while walking around the city, but sugared nuts are especially portable!

A New York nut vendor smiles while standing beside his food truck

Wafels and Dinges

Wafels and Dinges mean “waffles and things” in Dutch, and the “things” part refers to all of the extras you can add to your waffle at this popular dessert food truck. Classic maple syrup, thick chocolate fudge, fresh strawberries, cookie spread, and many other sweets options complement the crunchy flavor of warm waffles. Most locations go wild on savory toppings, with bacon, sour cream, and cheese melting over a freshly baked waffle.

Find a Wafels and Dinges truck in Central Park and enjoy your waffle as the perfect picnic food on a Sunday afternoon.

Ling’s Fresh Made Sweet Mini Cakes are more like tiny air-filled pancakes that brighten your day. Once you smell the sweet scent of fried dough, find the $2 pastry bags filled with warm, doughy balls. Sprinkle your mini cakes with chocolate sauce or condensed milk, or enjoy them plain. This Chinatown hotspot has been in action since 1982, and is considered a staple of New York street food.

Due to the nature of creating a well balanced and thoughtful gastronomy experience, many of our tours are unable to accommodate certain dietary restrictions. Please contact us prior to booking your tour to see if we are able to accommodate your dietary needs.

We chose the Greenwich Village district for our New York City food tour because of the district's diverse restaurant scene, deep-rooted history, architecture, and its timeless charisma. While the rest of the city was subject to the 1811 grid system, the Village was able to escape this fate because of its charming, meandering streets.

The powers that be could not be bothered to try to reroute the winding streets found here. But their loss was our gain! This was a big win, both for those residents and for us because we get to take a step back into time and stroll outside of city life without actually leaving the city!

  • Chevron down What type of food will we taste on the tour?

Food tasting locations can change without notice.

  • Chevron down Can I bring my children on the tour?

While we welcome children on our tours, our tours are mainly for a mature audience in that we taste a variety of cuisine and dive deeply into history and culture. Sometimes we find that children of a young age may become easily disengaged. Although we are a family-friendly tour company, please take care in knowing if your child will enjoy the experience prior to booking. We find that children 8 years old and older enjoy our Little Italy & Chinatown Food Tour.

  • Chevron down How much walking is involved?

We walk no more than ½ a mile at a moderate pace. During the three hours, there are many standing breaks, so we aren’t always walking. There are a few opportunities to sit throughout the tour.

  • Chevron down Is the tour wheelchair and baby stroller accessible?

Although we would like to try to cater to your wheelchair and stroller needs, it takes time for us to coordinate due to the geographic limitations of the area. With notice, sometimes we can accommodate your needs.

  • Chevron down Will there be restroom stops on the tour?

Yes, on our Little Italy & Chinatown Food Tour, there is a restroom at our first tasting location and at our sit-down tasting (about half way through the tour).

  • Chevron down Do you accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?

Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting does its best to accommodate any dietary restrictions and allergies. Please alert us upon booking your tour/dining experience.

My boyfriend and I decided to take a food tour of Chinatown and Little Italy to try some new foods and learn about the culture/ history of these neighborhoods and Hannah did not disappoint! As a picky eater, this was a great way to open up a bit more while learning + sightseeing the area. Hannah provided great insight into how these neighborhood + cuisine developed, answered tour and non-tour related questions, and made this a great experience for us. You could tell Hannah truly enjoys sharing this experience and I would recommend this to tourist and locals alike!

We took 4 food tours while on our trip and this one is by far the best! Patrick was FANTASTIC and got us trying foods that we never would have stumbled upon on our own. We sampled tons of wonderful food and learned so much history about the city. We left full and will definitely do it again next visit!

A wonderful experience with great food, lots of history, and fun! Shout out to our guide Lily who absolutely made the experience. She was knowledgeable and added lots of fun to the tour!! 11/10 Would recommend and even more so if Lily is the guide!!

Food On Foot Tours-Hudson Valley, Long Island & New York City

Available as both public and private Food On Foot Tours we are unique authentic local experiences that are very different from standard food tours. We are a ten-time TripAdvisor Award Winner, earning the Certificate of Excellence and Travelers’ Choice Awards from 2011-2020. On a Food On Foot Tour, you’ll visit real non-tourist New York City neighborhoods or suburban towns and villages while stopping at places where the people who live there eat. Many tours bring you to places because they are receiving money back from the stops. Not us! We only take you to places we like but our stops feed us and we love it! The tour is a quality fresh food eating tour and not the standard sampling tour. You’ll choose what you like at every stop and how much. Our public tours are known for being relaxed in a larger group format where you not only see and feel the real New York but you meet and mingle (or not) with others from around the world. Because you choose what you like all our stops are a surprise and we know from our years of tours that it’s much more fun that way. The tour replaces a meal. And because we care about your whole trip or your eating as a local, we help out with unbiased restaurant recommendations, if you like, to help you eat great and save money for the rest of your stay. Many of our 3,000+ excellent reviews say take our tour as early in your stay as possible to get the most out of tours and the recommendations we provide. Spirits On Foot

THERE IS “SPIRIT” IN OUR STORY

Thousands and thousands of visitors had taken a Food On Foot Tour by 2017. Many guests had asked us to add pub crawls to our food tour menu. The response of our founder was always the same thing said in different ways but the overall theme was the same, “It’ll never work, I don’t drink”. Most guests stopped right there but with one reply one of our guests changed everything when he said, “you’d be the perfect tour guide because you don’t drink”. And a great new experience was born!

Self-Guided On-Your-Own Tour Experiences

EAT & SAVE LIKE A LOCAL, WITHOUT THE LOCAL!

Our unique and personalized service is designed to help you eat great while visiting. Since our inception, the word we have heard most often from our over 30,000 guests is overwhelmed! We can potentially save you hours of aggravation and even hundreds of dollars but it is mostly like having a friend make recommendations for you based on your plans.

HOW DO FOOD ON FOOT PUBLIC GUIDED TOUR TICKETS WORK?

Our Food On Foot Guided Public Food Tour calendar posts on the 16 th day of the previous month up

to two months earlier. Since our food tours are different than standard food tours and you choose

what you like at each stop you may choose tickets with a food credit or tickets where you

pay-as-you-go. Either way the tour is the same but each ticket type has different cancellation options

so choose your ticket based on your needs.  We do not deviate from the terms for the ticket you buy.

Like any concert, sports or theater ticket your ticket(s) are considered a purchase and you are

responsible for the cost of your tickets or cancellation fees based on the terms of the ticket you buy.

Our spaces are very limited and once you book a ticket you are preventing someone else from

booking that space so cancellation options are not free and are considered a courtesy. Cancellation

fees increase the closer you get to your tour date. There are no cancellations of any type for any

reason within 24 hours of tour start times. Private travel insurance is available on the open

market as we do not issue refunds for free at any time for any reason. These rules also apply to any

tickets offered by travel partner companies unless otherwise stated in their agreement or on their

listing or app. If you are part of a program that offers tickets that are booked under their terms it is

important to note that we do not decide what to offer you. That is strictly their decision.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BOOK A TOUR OR EVENT?

For public tours and events the only way to purchase tickets is online here or via the book button above. The public food tour schedule posts on or before the 16th of the previous month. Public food tours run from mid-March until the first week of January.  Other public tours including Spirits On Foot and Food For Fans Sports Tours have a varied schedule. Private tours are available all times of year based on availability. For private and group tours and events please contact the Food On Foot office directly.

IS FOOD ON FOOT A TOUR COMPANY?

Food On Foot started as a food tour company but we are now full service offering all types of food and sports related tours and events for individuals and groups.

WHAT DOES FOOD ON FOOT OFFER?

Let’s start with what’s made us famous, our Food On Foot Guided Tours both public and private. Other tours that we offer include our Spirits On Foot Tours (21 and over please), Food For Fans Group Sports Tours and the Self-Guided On Your Own Neighborhood Food Experiences. Our events include the Gourmet NY Tasting- a unique experience for groups in New York’s leading food halls for local meetings, events, parties and visitor groups and the Queens-Flushing Meadows International Food Excursion. We also offer our curated unbiased Custom Restaurant Recommendation Service for travelers coming to New York. We help you in enhancing your New York experience!

ARE THESE PUBLIC OR PRIVATE EVENTS AND TOURS?

Most of our events and many of our tours are for small private or larger groups. Publicly scheduled events and tours are listed on our calendar as they become available and require the purchase of tickets. Public events include Food for Fans Guided Sports Tours. Food On Foot Scheduled Guided Food Tours, Spirits On Foot Tours and the Queens-Flushing Meadows International Food Excursion.  All other events, services and tours are private for individuals, couples, families and any type of small and large group.

WHAT IF I BOOKED TICKETS OR HAVE AN OFFER THROUGH AN OUTSIDE SOURCE?

Food On Foot does have on-going and changing relationships with companies in the travel industry. If you have an offer through an outside vendor you must follow the instructions provided by that vendor on their app or website and use any booking codes they provide. If you book tickets through us and then go to any outside vendor for tickets your tickets may be non-refundable or incur a cancellation fee based on the type of ticket you purchased.

WHAT ARE THE TERMS ON PUBLIC TOUR AND EVENT TICKETS? CAN I GET A REFUND?

All of our public tours and events have one or more ticket options. You need a ticket for our tours and events because capacity is limited. We do not accept reservations under any circumstances no matter how or where you purchase your tickets. Scroll down on the booking platform for each tour/event to see ticket types. If you want a cancellation option do not purchase non-refundable tickets. Like concert, sporting event and theater venues we do not refund those tickets under any circumstances, personal or otherwise. These tickets are often the lowest cost option because you are guaranteeing your full payment at booking. Tickets with cancellation options incur a fee.

ARE EVENTS & TOURS YEAR-ROUND?

Events can be booked all year based on their availability. Not all events and tours are available year around. Always come hungry!

Concerns grow as builder ‘desperate’ for apartments at toxic site in nyc neighborhood.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Greenpoint’s skyline has been growing taller for years — but some residents worry that a developer is cutting corners in their scramble for more apartments at a toxic, long-shuttered industrial site.

The former home of NuHart Plastic Manufacturing on Dupont Street has drawn sharp scrutiny after the builder and state environmental regulators abandoned plans to remove the contaminated soil because it’s sunk too deep.

“The developers are desperate to finish the remediation and get the site built,” Stephen Chesler, a Greenpoint resident who serves as the environmental protection committee chair for Brooklyn Community Board 1, told The Post.

“It makes everyone very nervous that the developer is going at such a breakneck speed to decontaminate the site,” he continued, pointing out that a playground and a senior center sit across the street.

The state Superfund site — perched in north Brooklyn near the confluence of the East River and Newtown Creek — will soon be home to a gleaming, eight-story apartment complex dubbed “NuHart West,” a company spokesperson said.

The development will include 471 rental units — with 143 designated for affordable housing, the spokesperson said.

NuHart Plastic Manufacturing on Dupont Street

But that won’t happen until the developer mixes the toxic soil beneat with concrete to create blocks that will stay buried about 25 feet below the building’s foundation, according to Gothamist .

The news didn’t sit well with some Greenpointers, who worried that leaving chemicals from the plant’s heyday of manufacturing plastic and vinyl products could be dangerous to everyone in the neighborhood.

“There are known carcinogens there, which could do serious damage and can be lethal in high doses,” Chesler said. “We’re worried the concrete could be compromised, and contaminated water could seep out.”

The work site, boarded off.

That contaminated water is rife with chemical phthalates, which make plastic more durable and are used in tons of household products like vinyl flooring, plastic packaging, garden hoses and medical tubing, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Also present is trichloroethylene, a cancer-causing substance known as TCE that’s often used to make refrigerants, a state Superfund fact sheet said.

The chemicals worked their way into the soil and groundwater after worming out of leaky underground storage tanks, Gothamist said.

The plan to mix the dirt with concrete came after site developer Madison Realty Capital discovered in January that the pollution had seeped much further down than originally thought.

The work site.

Digging too deep might leave the building with structural damage, the Superfund sheet said. So cubing the contaminants and covering them up became the next-best thing.

A Madison Realty spokesperson told The Post last week that the company always knew it might have to employ such a plan, which has been used at other NYC Superfund sites and would finally wrap up the company’s year-long cleanup.

“Madison Realty Capital has worked closely with the North Brooklyn community, local elected officials, DEC, environmental consultants, other city and state agencies and its construction team to ensure the safe and timely cleanup and redevelopment of the Nuhart site,” Zach Kadden, managing director of development at the firm, said in a statement.

“Over the course of the last 2.5 years, Madison Realty Capital has held eight public meetings, attended the first Greenpoint Construction Task Force meeting, and sent weekly updates to 500 members of the community to update the public throughout every phase of the process.”

Crews started to pour the foundation earlier this month. It should be done by May, and the whole complex is slated for completion in 2025.

Laura Hoffman, a 65-year-old Greenpoint resident who has lived in the neighborhood her entire life, told The Post that her six kids — and their kids — have suffered from the area’s toxic legacy, which she claimed appears in her family as birth defects, brain diseases and autoimmune disorders.

“There’s no other explanation other than environment, because all of our conditions are all over the place,” she said. “We got exposed to a whole bunch of stuff … a lot of people got sick, my family got sick, and we’re still dealing with different medical issues.”

An overhead shot of where the development will be.

Her oldest son and his wife had two sets of twins, she said. Both times, one of the twins died in utero from a rare birth defect called Trisomy 18, or Edward’s syndrome.

“The doctors said one twin from each set dying from that defect was rarer than getting hit by lightning twice,” Hofmann said.

“To deliberately leave something as bad as phthalates in the soil, particularly knowing the toxic legacy of the neighborhood — I think it’s disgusting,” she said of the developer, who she believes is simply trying to beat a tax-break deadline for firms that build affordable housing.

“The rush is all about money,” she said.

A street shot of the project.

“As much as I want to see affordable housing, I don’t want to see people getting sick in the future because they don’t know about something that’s here in the soil,” she continued. “That’s basically what happened to generations of people that lived here.”

Indeed, Madison Realty is on track to meet the June 2026 deadline for that tax break, according to Gothamist. Although the remediation plan may change if new information surfaces during the public comment period — further delaying construction.

Jane O’Connell, the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s remediation manager for the site, told the outlet that the state is watching “very carefully” to make sure the job’s done right.

“If they didn’t do it right, they’ve got to go back and do it again,” she said.

That sounded odd to Hofmann.

“The agencies say if [the remediation] isn’t good, they’ll have to go back and fix it,” she said. “That sounds kind of crazy to me. I mean, they’re already building on parts of the property there.”

TikTok Food Critic Keith Lee Is Back in His Hometown of Detroit and Ready to Eat

The self-proclaimed TikTok critic is looking to visit local restaurants that could use his magic touch — though he didn’t realize the city was hosting the NFL Draft

Guess who’s back in Detroit? Keith Lee, one of the most viral names in online food reviewing and a native son of the Motor City, raised in the Joy Road and Evergreen area on the westside, has arrived in the city and is ready to eat. The TikTok personality returned with his family for a visit this week and is asking for recommendations of local restaurants that want to be reviewed.

It’s a busy time to go check out restaurants in Detroit, as Lee pointed out in a post published Thursday, April 25. There’s the NFL Draft taking place downtown (which is already breaking attendance records with a whopping 275,000 visitors who descended upon the central business district on Day One of the Draft). Helping to kick off the football festivities, another Detroit native, Big Sean, delighted fans Thursday with a quick performance on the Draft stage.

In light of the chaos overtaking much of the city’s hospitality industry during the Draft, Lee says he’s not treating this trip as a “full food tour,” but is rather taking this time to revisit some of his beloved childhood favorites, like coneys, corned beef egg rolls, and Better Made chips.

Lee wasted no time with the taste-testing, first stopping by Hart Plaza — the NFL Draft Experience area site, where dozens of local restaurants, food trucks, and cafes are set up for the festivities. He appreciated the fact that many of the food vendors were Black-owned. He offered a sneak peek of what he’s getting into food-wise during this current visit by checking out a tray of wings from Good Vibes Lounge . He reported that the East English Village establishment had just gotten hit (presumably by a car) and that the ownership was feeling “defeated.”

“God willingly, she got a space here at the NFL Draft,” Lee says, before he displays a screenshot of Good Vibe Lounge’s Instagram account to let viewers know how to find the neighborhood bar and restaurant.

“God don’t make no mistakes,” added Lee, who is known for his spiritual take on his so-called “ Keith Lee effect .” Eater has reached out to Lee via email about his visit and will report any updates when they become available.

Lee has become a household fixture among the food-obsessed for his food tours in cities across the United States, including San Francisco , New Orleans , Dallas , Chicago , and Atlanta — a destination that went viral for its many dramatic instances of bad experiences. A native Detroiter, who now lives in Las Vegas, Lee has more than 16 million followers and makes it a point to visit smaller mom-and-pop establishments — often that are BIPOC-owned — that may have impressive menus, but that might be lacking in online presence. His visits are unannounced and are primarily takeout. He often sends in a family member to fetch the food when it’s ready so as not to attract attention. He rates each place 1 to 10 for customer service and the quality of the food, and makes sure to note his personal preferences whenever he scores. When he first started, he focused on Vegas-area restaurants and did his reviews while sitting in a tiny children’s-sized Paw Patrol chair, and now he most often films his reviews in his car.

The “Keith Lee effect” that his reviews have on small businesses is profound. Janel Prator, owner of the Puddery , a Houston-area dessert business featuring Prator’s creamy banana pudding, told Eater in a December 2023 report that her shop was struggling to take off before a review Lee did his did of her place in November. His influence was immediate business took off, with customers lined up from the front door eager to try her desserts.

The last time Lee paid a visit to his hometown was in September when he reviewed several beloved local food businesses, including the Spot food truck, which, according to Lee’s review, had contacted him on social media to invite him to check out its food. He ordered a steak crunchwrap supreme with Hot Cheetos (on the side) and gave the truck a rave review for its service, house-made “Turbo” sauce, and commented that the meat was seasoned to perfection. Similar to Prator’s experience, the Spot also reported traffic snaked around its truck in the days after Lee’s review went live.
