Portuguese Island is off the coast of Mozambique, in Maputo Bay between Maputo and Inhaca Island. It is situated in the Indian Ocean about 600 kilometres from Durban.

Portuguese Island was discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1498 during his second voyage to India. The island was named Ilha de Santa Cruz - the Christian Holy Cross Island - and was the first territory in Africa to be colonised by Europeans.

The history of Portuguese Island is a rich one, with many interesting facts about its discovery, settlement and development. Vasco da Gama himself spent three weeks on the island whilst he replenished his water supplies before continuing on his voyage back to Europe.

No, you don't need to be vaccinated for a Oh Ship 2024, destination - Portuguese Island, Mozambique Cruise.

Do I need a Passport for Oh ship?

Even if Portuguese Island is a tender and not an actual port, you still need a passport as you are exiting the Republic of South Africa. Immigration in the port of Durban will check your passport details and give you an exit stamp.

Do I need a Visa for Portuguese Island?

South African citizens and most SADC nationals will not need a visa for Portuguese Island, Inhaca Island or for Pomene. For those travellers that do, the cruise ship will take care of the visa for you. The cost of the visa is normally about USD 50.- and will be settled with your onboard cruise spend at the end of your holiday.

What is the currency on Portuguese Island?

All your drinks can be purchased with the ship's cruise card. The drinks packages can also be used on the island. For any purchases you want to make in the local market, the vendors will accept South African Rands and US Dollars. If you have local currencies (such as Meticais) they will accept them too.

How long do we stay on the island?

The cruise vessel will anchor off Portuguese Island in the early hours of the morning. The last transfer is in the late afternoon. (Check the return time in the ship's gangway or ask the crew for the information)

Do I need to bring my own towels?

You can take the towels that are provided in your cabin onshore, so you don't have to bring your own. Just don't forget to bring them back.

What about umbrellas & loungers?

You can rent loungers & beach umbrellas as part of packages sold onboard the cruise ship. Ask reception or check the daily program for any more details and for things to do.

Yes, the cruise is only for +18. Younger cruises should enjoy another date, as the non stop entertainment and party is definitely not recommended for little ones. 

Your cruise fare includes accommodation, meals, non stop entertainment and DJ.

The age limit is 18, the non stop party is not for little ones even if accompanied by family members. 

MSC onboard safety protocol is above board. The ship security has been looking after cruisers and partygoers for a very long time and has a lot of experience with those parties.

You can not use any cash to pay onboard, you will use your cruise card. When boarding, you will have to link your cruise card to your credit card. Alternatively, you will have to bring cash and deposit it at the reception when boarding.

Covid-19 Vaccination Policy: All Guests (2 years old and over) need to provide a certificate of a negative RT-PCR test taken within 48 hours of the day of embarkation. All Guests (12 years old and over) have to be fully vaccinated with an approved Covid-19 vaccine with the final dose administered at least 14 days before the cruise departure date. Guests aged 12 – 17, having received a single shot a minimum of 14 days before the date of embarkation, will be accepted as fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated guests (2 years to 11) will additionally have to undergo an antigen lateral flow test at the embarkation port at a cost of R300 per person. WHAT WE'RE DOING AS YOUR CREW

GOODTIME III and the Fryan Family have been and continue more than ever to being committed in providing a safe and enjoyable environment and experience for our passengers. You can rest assured as we are strictly adhering to the guidelines set forth by the CDC (Center for Disease Control), the Cleveland Department of Public Health, the US Coast Guard and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. GOODTIME III is an active member of PVA (Passenger Vessel Association) and will implement their guidelines and directives as well. Please keep in mind that we are continuing to endure the repercussions of the virus and the requirements regarding capacities, social distancing and mask mandates will still be everchanging throughout our season. Our policies and procedures may change after we are able to assess how operationally efficient they turn out to be so we ask for your patience and understanding.

• Employees will be required to have their temperature checked before each shift and will be required to wear facemasks.
• Employees will be required to utilize hand sanitizer and hand washing frequently on a consistent schedule.
• Sanitizing stations will be available to all guests and are placed around both the vessel and dock facility.
• All surfaces will be thoroughly sanitized before and after every cruise.
• All employees have attended the food handler and COVID-19 class that has been offered by ServSafe prior to returning to work.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AS OUR PASSENGER(S)

• Per the City of Cleveland mandate, we are requiring that all of our passengers wear a face covering and remain seated as much as possible for the duration of the cruise.
• Please wear a face covering while speaking with crew members or passengers not in your party.
• Please wash your hands often and utilize the provided hand sanitizer dispensers located on throughout our ship.
• Please adhere to all social distancing guidelines and stay at least 6 feet away from other guests.
• If you are sick or symptomatic in any way, please do not come. We can transfer your reservation to another cruise at a later date. It's not much of a "good time" to come aboard when you're not feeling well!
• In order to maintain a safe environment during these continued uncertain times, everyone must continue to do their part to remain safe regardless if you have received the vaccine or not.

WHAT WILL BE DIFFERENT IN THE 2021 SEASON

• We request that you arrive at least 1/2 hour prior to BOARDING time. Your entire party MUST BE present to enter the boarding area. Please maintain 6' feet of distance between your party and other parties in line.
• We respectfully request that you follow protocols you have been using when in public for the last year, e.g. and remain in your area for the duration of the cruise.
• Food and Beverage Service will be offered on a crew regulated, self-serve basis. To continue to comply with social distancing, you will be called up to the concession stand or Bar to purchase food and beverage. For the Narrated Luncheon Cruise and the Dinner & City Lights cruises, the crew will call individual tables up to the buffet and our staff will plating the food.

Great afternoon aboard the Goodtime! Well done tour of Cleveland from the comfort of the boat. Any side of the boat is good. There is both covered and uncovered areas to sit. They sell food and beverage but there is also a drinking fountain.

Great experience! Our group of grad students and faculty took a narrated afternoon cruise and loved it! The narrative is really interesting--it helped us understand what we were seeing, and it gave us a real appreciation for the city and its water. The boat offered many locations for watching, sitting, and chatting. We enjoyed the route (especially the river) and saw so much we couldn't experience any other way.

This was a surprise birthday gift for my fiancé and as well as a first time for myself to get over the fear of ever getting on a boat Let alone A SHIP! Dining Cruise Ship Set to Sail in Northeast Ohio this Summer

CLEVELAND — April 27, 2023 – Jacobs Entertainment, Inc. is excited to announce Lady Caroline, Northeast Ohio’s newest premier dining cruise ship. Anticipated to arrive in Cleveland on May 8, 2023, the 120-foot-long, 15,000-square-foot luxury ship will dock on the Flats West Bank and begin its inaugural Cleveland season later this summer.

The vessel’s name is a nod to developer Jeffrey P. Jacobs’ daughter Caroline, who shares his passion for showcasing the City of Cleveland and for making a positive impact on Northeast Ohio. “Lady Caroline celebrates the next generation contributing to the vibrancy of the region. Our family hopes it inspires many to see our hometown’s promise and appeal,” said Jeff Jacobs, CEO of Jacobs Entertainment, Inc.

Three of Lady Caroline’s four decks are fully enclosed and climate controlled for optimal guest comfort and feature a sophisticated and bright interior accented by high-gloss woods and reflective finishes. Meanwhile, its open-air sky deck features a covered bar with sweeping, panoramic views of Lake Erie and Cuyahoga River, “This stylish ride absolutely will be one of the best ways to experience Cleveland,” says Lady Caroline Director of Operations Ellen Kelley, adding, “With exceptional views, multiple bars, DJ entertainment and a buffet freshly prepared onboard, every voyage will be a celebration.”

“I am excited to be part of introducing Lady Caroline to residents and visitors ready to experience fine food, first-class service and a new perspective of a dynamic city,” says seasoned Captain Scott Pearson, who will be at the ship’s helm.

Although Lady Caroline will soon take Nautica Queen’s place in the Cleveland skyline, it will not take its place in the crew’s hearts. “We’ve invested significant resources, time and energy into Nautica Queen over the years, but before she became part of our family in 1992 she was embraced by other communities in Ohio and Michigan,” says JEI Executive Vice President Patrick J. McKinley. “As for the 42-year-old ship’s next chapter, there definitely could still be new waters for her to explore,” says McKinley.

Beginning in early June, Lady Caroline will offer a variety of regular lunch, brunch, dinner holiday and special event cruises to enjoy with fellow passengers, as well as privately chartered corporate, group or wedding voyages. “With ample nearby parking and seating for more than 200 guests, this is an opportunity to host a memorable outing for friends, family, colleagues or clients,” explains Kelley.

Lady Caroline will be docked alongside Nautica Queen outside the historic Powerhouse near sought-after Flats West Bank venues and attractions including Jacobs Pavilion, Greater Cleveland Aquarium and Windows on the River with other riverfront entertainment options.

Marietta OH is an Ohio River cruise port and town in Ohio USA (Washington County), with a population of around 15,000. The town is located at the mouth of Muskingum River's confluence with Ohio River.

The town was founded in 1788 by Yankees (colonists from New England). The first church was opened in 1796, the first college - in 1835. Town's early economy was based mainly on cargo and passenger shipping (by steamboats). Since the mid-19th-century the economy was boosted with the opening of the Baltimore-Ohio Railroad (1828), Belpre-Cincinnati Railroad (1860), Ohio Valley Railroad (1873). Steamboats regularly transported passengers between Marietta and Parkersburg WV (West Virginia). Two oil booms (1875 and 1910) attracted large investments. The Pure Oil Company (now Unocal) was founded in 1914 by the Dawes brothers.

The current-day town's economy is largely based on ferromanganese with the French company Eramet operating a large refinery here. The town is served by several major highways (including I-77 linking to Cleveland OH and Charleston WV) and by Williamstown WV's Mid-Ohio Valley Airport (3 daily flights connecting to Charlotte NC). Among the best-known tourist attractions are the annual Ohio River Sternwheel Festival (held in September, with live music performances and fireworks), Riverfront Roar (powerboat races held in July), Civil War Reenactment (September), Goodfest (music festival at Goodfellows Park), rowing regattas (throughout Spring).

It’s full steam ahead for the cruise ship industry after Royal Caribbean hiked its full-year profit guidance on Thursday, saying it expects 60% growth from last year following record bookings during the first quarter.

Travelers are paying “record ticket prices,” according to Royal Caribbean — despite a recent spate of high-sea deaths and missing passengers reports, including a Florida 20-year-old who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise this month.

Soaring demand for vacations at sea has given cruise operators ample room to raise ticket prices as the industry looks to close the pricing gap between more expensive land-based holidays and give their profits a lift.

Royal Caribbean, which operates the Celebrity Cruises, now expects annual profits of between $10.70 and $10.90 per share, compared with its earlier forecast of $9.90 to $10.10.

“Our existing fleet along with our new ships continue to perform exceptionally well, highlighted by the market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas,” CEO Jason Liberty said.

Royal Caribbean’s shares — which have spiked 126% in the past year, were up 2% on Thursday morning, to $139.32.

“I remember owning the stock in 2022 and every client was giving me grief about it,” said Peter Ahluwalia, manager at Belinvest Global Equity Fund that holds Royal Caribbean stocks and chief investment officer at Swiss Partners Group. “We’re turning almost 45% return on equity at the moment, which is quite incredible.”

Overall, the industry which was among the hardest hit during the pandemic, is expected to grow to 39.4 million passengers in 2027 from 31.7 million last year, according to Statista.

The surge in demand comes amid major publicity blows from incidents at sea involving passengers who have gone missing, including the Florida man who jumped overboard on April 4 in front of his brother and father after a night of drinking.

Last December, a 41-year-old Royal Caribbean passenger went overboard on a cruise to the Bahamas. That followed an incident last August involving a 64 year-old woman sailing from Singapore to Malaysia on Royal Caribbean who is presumed to have jumped to her death .

On average, 19 people go overboard on cruise ships every year — and of those, only about four are rescued, according to a 2020 study commissioned by the industry trade group Cruise Lines International Association.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. The cabins do not carry the single supplement fee singles encounter when booking other types of staterooms, making them an attractive option when traveling alone.

About 80% of the staterooms are Panorama Suites, which have 200 feet of living space, beds with a view and the river cruise industry's only open-air balcony. With Avalon excursions, solo cruisers have opportunities to meet like-minded guests during immersive tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, yoga or fitness classes, biking or hiking trips, and more. Two single occupancy staterooms are available on four of AmaWaterways' river cruise ships: AmaDolce, AmaDante, AmaLyra and AmaCello. These accommodations do not have single supplement fees.
