Porto is the second largest city after Lisbon in Portugal. It is a coastal city in the northwest corner of the country. The city displays beautiful gothic alleys with rich merchant houses from the past and a network of cobbled streets. Best is to explore the city mixing with the charismatic locals and gorging into the local cuisines. Porto is popular for port wine production and the hilly backside with the colorful homes. Rebeira, the medieval riverside district looks fascinating at night with reflection of the lights falling on the Rio Douro. Porto is not only about the gothic alleys, but the modern architects have taken a special interest in the Skyline of the city. So, a blend of medieval crumbling walls to modern structures is what gets Porto listed amongst the global cities. Other than high rising buildings, one can experience art through the street paintings and caricatures with the tattoos in the walls of the alleys. Be it craft beer breweries, gourmet steakhouses, cafes or food markets, Porto is absolutely splendid. Visit the Neoclassical Bolsa Palace, Livraria Lello and the iconic metallic Luis I bridge.

This post covers each of the best hop-on-hop-off bus tours in Porto, including information about locations you can visit and opportunities to save money on these services.

  • Yellow Bus Tours
  • Blue Bus Tours
  • City Sightseeing

There are currently three different tour companies offering hop on hop off bus tours in Porto, and each offers a somewhat similar service.

The main differences to note are the number of languages provided through their audio guides and ticket prices for each service, which can vary by a few euros depending on which one you choose.

Hop On Hop Off Porto Route Map

The advantage of these tours is that you can jump off at any of the included stops and take some time to explore the city at your own leisure before getting back on the bus to continue your journey.

These companies also use a double-decker bus with an open top, allowing visitors to enjoy excellent views of the city while on board.

You can expect hop-on hop-off tours to take between 1 ½ - 2 hours to complete if you don’t get off the bus.

This means you should have time to hop off at 4-5 different sites on an average day to spend some time looking around.

Two of the bus tour companies in Porto offer either a 1-day or 2-day ticket, and the other only provides 2-day tickets.

You’ll always save more money per day by picking the longer ticket with an average savings of about €5-€8 ($5.50-$8.50).

Needless to say, if you choose a 2-day ticket, you’ll have more time to hop off at even more stops and explore the city at your own pace!

Bus tours in Porto: everything you need to know

Once in a while I get emails asking what is the best Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto.…

' src=

Once in a while I get emails asking what is the best Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto. I decided to write an article with everything you need to know about the two best Hop On Hop Off Bus tours in Porto – schedules, prices and tickets, etc. I hope you enjoy the ride! 🙂

How to save money on the Hop On Hop Off bus tour in Porto

If you already decided to take a bus tour in Porto, I recommend you to buy the Yellow Bus Combo Ticket as it allows you to do three activities with one ticket: Hop On Hop Off bus tour + wine tasting at a Calém’s Port wine lodge + 6 bridges cruise. This ticket costs 35€ / adult and 17,50€ / kid (between 4 – 10 years old) and it saves you A LOT of money.

Let’s do the math:

  • 6 bridges cruise in Porto : 15€ / person
  • Hop On Hop Off bus tour : 22€ / person
  • Wine tasting at Calém’s port wine lodge : 18€ / person

The total value of these three activities is 55€ / person. Therefore, when you buy the Yellow Bus Combo Ticket , that costs 35€ / person, you are saving 20€!

The bus tours in Porto are worth it if you:

  • … have little time in the city. This way you’ll get an idea of the main attractions in Porto.
  • … have a few days in Porto, but would like to have a first look before deciding which monuments to visit.
  • … are coming to Porto with kids: it’s always a joy to climb to the second floor of the bus to see the world from up there!
  • … would like to visit places further away from the city center, like the beaches in Matosinhos and the Port wine cellars in Gaia.

red bus tour porto

1st option – Yellow Bus Combo Ticket :

Hop on hop off bus tour for 2 days + boat cruise + visit to a port wine cellar.

This is the Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto that I like the most because with a single ticket you get to do three must do’s in Porto: the bus tour, the famous 6 bridges cruise in the Douro river (a pleasurable 50 minutes boat ride) and a visit to a Port wine lodge. Let’s do the math: the Classic Hop On Hop Off Bus tour costs 22€, the river cruise costs 15€ and a visit to a Port wine lodge costs around 15 / 25€. So in total, you would pay at least 52€ for these three activities. Therefore, it really pays off to buy the Yellow Bus Combo Ticket for just 35€, as you will be saving at least 17€ / person. It is a lot of money!

Itineraries of the Yellow Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto

The first itinerary is called Historical Porto and it goes through downtown Porto to Foz neighborhood (by the riverside), and then to the Port wine lodges in Gaia. It is really nice for those of you who would like to get a view over the most important monuments in Porto, but also check out the Port wine cellars across the river.

The other Yellow Bus tour in Porto also wanders a bit in the city center and by the riverside, but then it heads to Matosinhos, a nearby city that is phenomenal for fish lovers, as it has some of the best seafood restaurants in the region. This second itinerary of the Yellow Bus tour in Porto is called Porto Vintage and it stops in front of the beach of Matosinhos and then in front of Parque da Cidade, the largest city park in Porto, ideal for walking or riding a bike.

Important information about the Yellow Bus tours in Porto

Audio languages: there are currently 16 languages available. Average duration: 1h50. Schedule: During Summer (June to September): everyday from 9h15 to 18h15. During Winter: everyday from 9h30 to 17h30. The Historical Tour of Porto departures from Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques (near São Bento train station) at 9h15, 10h15, 11h15, 12h30, 13h15, 14h15, 15h15, 16h15 and 17h15. The Porto Vintage Tour also departures from Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques at 9h, 10h, 11h, 12h, 13h, 14h, 15h, 16h and 17h. Frequency: The Hop On Hop Off bus departures every 60 minutes. Cancellation policy: You can get a full refund if you cancel the ticket up to 24h before the date that you booked it for.

Where to buy the tickets

The simplest way is to get the online combo ticket for the Yellow bus tour in Porto, because these bus tours get full very quickly, specially during the high season (spring, summer and beginning of autumn). This way you don’t need to worry about the queues to buy the tickets. Then you just need to print it and show it at one of the bus stops, so just get the online combo ticket for the Yellow Bus and enjoy the ride! Obviously, if you are not interested in visiting a Port wine cellar nor the 6 bridges cruise, it makes no sense to get the combo ticket to the Yellow Bus tour in Porto. In that case, the Classic 2 Days ticket for the Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto, of the Yellow Bus company, is more than enough and it costs 22€.

Would you like to include a tram ride?

historical tram downtown porto

I recently found out a really cool combo ticket that combines the Hop On Hop Off bus tour in Porto + tram ride + Funicular ticket. It is slightly cheaper than the other combo tickets (adult: 26€ and children: 13€) and it gives you access not only to the bus tour but to two ancient transports in Porto, the tram and the picturesque Guindais’ elevator. You can get the online combo ticket online for the hop on hop off bus + tram + Guindais’ elevator .

2nd Option CitySightseeing Hop On Hop Off Bus tour (red Bus tours)

CitySightseeing is another provider of Hop On Hop Off Bus tours in Porto. I simply call it the Red Bus due to its colour 😛 It also has two itineraries. Unfortunately, CitySightseeing does not provide combo tickets for the Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto, Port wine cellar and the 6 bridges cruise, so you can only get a 1 or 2 days ticket for the bus itself.

Itineraries of the Red Bus tours in Porto

The red line itinerary is very similar to the Vintage Porto itinerary from Yellow Bus. The Blue Line, on the other hand, heads to Vila Nova de Gaia (the city across the douro river), onto Real Companhia Velha (a wine museum owned by a large scale producer) and to El Corte Ingles, as in the Historical Porto of the Yellow Bus tour.

red bus tour porto itineraries

Should I buy a 1 day or a 2 day ticket for the Red Bus tours in Porto?

The difference in price for a 1 day or 2 day ticket is really small: 1 day ticket – Adult: 22€  | Children: 11€ 2 days ticket – Adult: 24€ | Children: 12€ Therefore if you don’t have a fixed plan for your days in Porto it might pay off to buy the 2 day ticket for the Red Bus tour, as you can use it as a regular bus tour that lasts for 48h!

A word of caution regarding the Hop On Hop Off bus tours in Porto

Porto is a small city with a very compact city centre. Moreover, there are currently some construction work going on, mainly in Avenida dos Aliados, also near São Bento train station, Avenida da Boavista and Praça da Galiza. This basically means that there is A LOT of traffic jams, particularly during the high season (May to October). Therefore, taking the hop on hop off bus tours in Porto might not be the best option, particularly if you are in a hurry.

If you’re visiting Porto for a weekend or just a few days, then hop-on, hop off city bus tours can be a great way to ensure you squeeze in all the main sights. Porto has so much to offer, and if you aren’t sure which attractions are worth visiting, then a hop-on, hop-off tour can help you see it all.

The most famous sightseeing bus tour options are: City Sightseeing Portugal and Yellow Bus tours.

Option 1: City Sightseeing Portugal

The City Sightseeing buses in Porto are big red double-decker buses. Once you’ve hopped on, you can hop on and off as many times as you like. The City Sightseeing buses operate all year round except on Christmas and New Years Day in Portugal . The first tour departs at 9am and the last at 6.45pm, with buses departing every 30 minutes.

What language is the audio tour in?

An audio guide is available in eight different languages on board: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Japanese.

What route does this bus take in Porto?

This bus company has two routes: the Red Line (33 stops), which departs from Ribeira and the Blue Line (24 stops), which departs from Torre dos Clérigos .

How much does it cost?

A one-day pass costs €15 for adults and a two-day pass costs €17 and is valid for 48 hours from when you first validate it.

City Sightseeing Porto

You can buy a ticket with City Sightseeing or our friends at Get Your Guide . You may also be interested in other tours of Porto , they have so many to choose from.

Option 2: Yellow Bus Official Sightseeing Tours

A Yellow Bus Official Sightseeing hop-on, hop-off tour is a great way to discover the city in three different ways – by bus, by boat, and inside a Port wine cellar! The buses operate everyday from 9.15am until 6.15pm in summer and from 9.30am to 5.30pm during the winter.

An audio guide is available in eight different languages on board: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Japanese.

The Yellow Bus tour offers two different routes: Historical Porto, which takes you through the city centre, and Porto Castles, which includes the riverside and Matosinhos (northern Porto).

This can also be a great way to save money, since a bus ride, boat cruise and visit to a Port wine cellar will cost you more than the Yellow Bus Premium 3-in-1 ticket for €23.40 (for an adult). Alternatively, a one-day bus ticket costs €13.50 for adults and a two-day ticket costs €15.30.

The best stops on your hop-on, hop-off tour of Porto

The porto cathedral.

The Porto Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the historical centre of Porto. It is one of the city’s oldest and most important Romanesque monuments.

Porto Cathedral

Torre dos Clérigos

Part of the Clérigos Church, a Baroque church in Porto, the bell tower (Torre dos Clérigos) is visible from all over the city and is one of Porto’s most iconic symbols.

Port Wine Museum

The Port Wine Museum is the perfect stop for wine lovers! You’ll learn all about where Port wine comes from, how it is made, and how the process has developed over time.

The advantages of hop-on, hop-off bus tour

We really love these bus tours as there is less waiting time because a bus passes each stop every 30 minutes and there are two different bus tour routes with over 50 stops around Porto. You won’t get lost because you can’t miss these brightly coloured, easy to identify buses and the stops are clearly signposted around the city. Your ticket gives you access to the tour bus for up to two days, with unlimited “Hop-On, Hop-Offs” and they are good value for money, usually costing around €20 for 24 hours. A seat on a tour bus means you will enjoy 360° panoramic views of the city with an audio guide in eight different languages so you can learn all about Porto’s history and culture . Finally, you have the option of creating your own itinerary to explore the city at your own pace and leisure. To summarise, the Porto hop-on, hop-off bus tours are:

  • Convenient;
  • Affordable;
  • Informative; and
  • Lots of fun.

But there can be some disadvantages

Because of all the reasons above, these buses are extremely popular with tourists. That means that the buses can be busy, especially in summer and at key times of the day. You might find yourself without a seat or waiting for the next bus to come along, which could affect you if you are short for time. Another disadvantage, depending on your itinerary, can be that the bus stops at all the major tourist sites. If you are simply trying to move from point A to B, and not interested in all the stops between, public transport, a taxi or even walking might be a better option.

The hop-on, hop-off bus tours in Porto: Are they worth it?

If you have little time in the city, you can easily knock out all the major city sites in 24 or 48 hours by hopping on a bus. It’s also great if you want to get your bearings first and if you want to see what the city has to offer before deciding which attractions will get your attention, then the bus tour could be the way to go.

Are you coming to Porto with kids?

It can be hard travelling with children, but it can be a fun adventure for kids to climb to the second floor of a bus and see the city from high up.

Tip 1: 24 hours can be enough to discover porto

While 24 hours can be enough to discover the sites of Porto, you can better explore the city with a 48-hour pass. An extra day can give you more freedom and a chance to relax at each bus stop, rather than rush through the city, given you have the time, of course.

Tip 2: Tickets include discounts for attractions

Your ticket also comes with discounts to many of the city’s attractions, so be sure to make full use of this! For example, the Yellow Bus offers discounts at the Zoo Santo Inácio in Gaia, Sealife and the Serralves Museum (just to name a few) and the City Sightseeing bus offers free visits to Quinta da Boeira,  Quevedo or Porto Cruz wine cellars. The list of included discounts can be found on the city map on board your bus.

Tip 3: Pay attention to bus stops

If you are unsure you are at the right bus station, just look up! All bus stations with a bus tour in Porto display the plaque of the company.

tour bus Porto

With over 50 conveniently located stops all around the city, simply hop off to see the destinations you wish to explore up close and hop back on to move to the next one! Don’t lose your ticket, and above all, make the most of all Porto has to offer. If you are planning a day trip to cities outside of Porto, this can take time away from the city’s centre. A hop-on, hop-off  bus tour can get you around the hot spots of Porto while giving you time to take a day trip to the coastline or wine regions. Enjoy Porto! England Euro 2024 victory plans revealed with bus parade and meeting with King Charles

Plans are being put in place should England return from the Euros as European champions with an open top bus parade and a Buckingham Palace visit both on the agenda

The England team are set to head to Buckingham Palace as part of a victory parade - if they win Euro 2024.

The Three Lions booked themselves a spot in the final by beating the Netherlands on Wednesday night and plans are being put in place should Gareth Southgate lead the team to a first ever Euros success.

The squad are set to be honoured by the King and the Royal Family if they do see off Spain in the final. A massive open-top bus parade would take the team from Guildhall in the City of London to the palace whilst also making a stop at Trafalgar Square on Tuesday. It is estimated that a first tournament success since 1966 could see a million fans line the streets.

Prince William , the president of the FA, is likely to lead a royal reception on Monday with the Prince of Wales enjoying some of England's games as a fan out in Germany. The squad are also expected to make the trip to Downing Street to meet the new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer , an Arsenal fan, who himself is set to attend the final in Berlin's Olympiastadion.

Tuesday will be a public celebration with the nation preparing for a second Euros final in three years following the near miss at Wembley in 2021. There will be no parade if Spain do end the country's hopes however, but the FA knew they had to plan for the possibility of victory and have liaised with the likes of the Metropolitan Police, London Councils and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan .

A victory event, featuring the royal family, would be similar to the one that came after the England rugby team won the World Cup in 2003, when they went to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen. They also had an open top bus parade that saw them head to Trafalgar Square. The last time London hosted a victory parade was in 2012, to recognise the achievements of Team GB at the Olympics.

The Euros, win or lose, has long been tipped to be Southgate's final tournament with the England boss approaching eight years in the role. He's faced criticism earlier in the Euros but, once again, has the nation believing as he responded to some of the tough words he's read and hard.

"We all want to be loved, right?" he said. "When you are doing something for your country and you are a proud Englishman, when all you read is criticism… it is hard. To be able to celebrate a second final is very, very special.

"We have given people some amazing nights, some of the best nights in 50 years."

Euro 2024: Huge open-top bus parade lined up if England conquer Spain in Sunday's final

England will head for Buckingham Palace on a victory parade if they win the Euros on Sunday, the Standard can exclusively reveal.

Preparations are at an advanced stage for Gareth Southgate’s squad to be honoured by the King and the royal family if they defeat Spain and claim the trophy for the first time.

A massive open-top bus parade would take the team from Guildhall, in the City of London, to the palace via Trafalgar Square on Tuesday, it is understood.

Up to a million fans could line the streets if England land their first trophy since 1966.

Two days of celebrations would begin on Monday with the team lined up to meet Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer — who is expected to attend the final in Berlin on Sunday — at Downing Street.

A royal reception, likely to be headed by Prince William, president of the Football Association, has also been pencilled in for Monday. Tuesday would be a massive public celebration, starting with a reception at Guildhall — the historic home of the City of London Corporation and Lord Mayor of London — before the parade via Trafalgar Square and The Mall to the palace.

There would not be a parade if Spain — the favourites — defeat England.

A victory royal event would have echoes of the England rugby team winning the World Cup in 2003, when they went to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen.

Netherlands v England: Semi-Final - UEFA EURO 2024

In 1966, the Queen presented the World Cup trophy to England captain Bobby Moore at Wembley stadium.

Ollie Watkins’s late winner against the Netherlands on Wednesday night has sparked a last-minute stampede of fans trying to get to Berlin in time for Sunday night’s final.

Spain beat France on Tuesday, 24 hours ahead of England, giving their fans extra time to sort out flights, trains, tickets and accommodation.

A search this morning on one popular booking website revealed three-quarters of its accommodation in the German capital on Sunday night had already been snapped up. Remaining options including shared rooms in mixed dormitories were going for more than £100.

There are still flights available but prices are sky-high with a seat on a plane from London Gatwick to Berlin on Easyjet today or on the day of the game fetching £917.99 with prices back down to a more normal £104 by Monday.

England v Netherlands - UEFA Euro 2024 - Semi Final - BVB Stadion Dortmund

The FA has also warned fans that sale windows for its official tickets will only be open for “a few hours” and advised those travelling tomorrow when the sale takes place to “ask a member of your travelling group, or a family member, to log in and purchase on your behalf”.

That will drive fans to resale sites with one offering its cheapest ticket at £1,558 on Thursday while also selling VIP packages for an eye-watering £66,000.

Perhaps mindful of the stress faced by fans trying to reach the final, the King in his official message to the team led by Southgate asked them to to watch out for the nation’s blood pressure in the final clash with Spain.

He said: “My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the UEFA European Championship — and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match. If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated! Good luck, England.”

England made it to the final after Aston Villa star Watkins scored the latest winning goal in a European Championship or World Cup semi-final, excluding extra-time.

The Three Lions had fallen behind after seven minutes to a Xavi Simons strike but a controversial Harry Kane penalty, awarded by VAR, brought the scores level 10 minutes later, before Watkins’ late, late intervention.

The Prince of Wales, who is a Villa fan and is likely to travel to Berlin for the final, also congratulated England and singled out Watkins for praise in a message on social media.

He said: “What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! #EURO2024 Finalists.”

England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo said: “I feel like the only way is up and it’s time to put ourselves into history.”

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

Get discounts for the Big Bus Tour NYC  here .

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!
