What to Wear on a College Tour If You’re Auditioning

Business casual is a good baseline, but, depending on what you’re auditioning for, you might make some additional tweaks to your clothes .

For example, what would a professional musician wear? How about an actor attending an audition? What would you wear to a gallery opening (though don’t get too fancy!)? Don’t overdo it, but do base your outfit choice on what makes sense for your field.

Comfortable shoes are still an absolute must, as you may be standing during your audition as well as walking around campus.

Come prepared with questions you'd like answered , including questions for current students, academic advisers, and admissions officers. You may have the opportunity to ask them, and it's better to be overprepared than underprepared !

If there's anything in particular you want to see, leave a little time during your visit to check it out in case it's not part of the tour . You can always ask your guide if it's okay to visit the library, for example, or to see the gym, art museum, or football field. Visiting colleges is an exciting step to envision yourself where you will want to be in the next four years as a college student. Viewing pictures and reading blogs can’t beat the real deal.

A typical college visit consists of an informational session with an admission representative followed by a campus tour. Most campus tours are led by a current student at the college and can last between 45 minutes to one hour long.

Campus visits are by no means required, and there are other ways to get the answers you need from a college without going to the campus (see How Can I Figure Out a School’s Culture Without Visiting the Campus? ). However, if you find yourself able to make a college visit to some of your top choices, the experience can afford many benefits to you.

Firstly, you can get a feel for the campus culture. Every college has a different vibe, a different set of priorities, and a different way of doing things. Simply being on the campus and observing the way that things work can help you figure out what the culture of that college is. More importantly, you’ll be able to judge whether you feel at home with the campus culture and whether it’s a good fit for you.

Many colleges offer official campus tours and information sessions that are led by university professionals or current students. These information sessions generally go over the basic information you need to know about the university and its application, along with any upcoming deadlines for the current application season. So if you’re visiting the campus shortly before you start applying to college, these information sessions could be very helpful.

The guided campus tour gives you a chance to hit the best spots on campus without getting lost. Campus tours are generally led by current students, who can give an insider’s perspective into what it’s like to attend that university and answer your questions if they have time.

If you are planning to visit a university campus, you can also try to contact current students at the university — perhaps an alumnus from your high school — and arrange to shadow them for a few hours to get a look at what a typical day at that college is like. By shadowing a student, you get a unique perspective on the schools’ academics, extracurriculars, and social scene.

You could also arrange a meeting with a professor in your intended field of study at the university if you can manage it. This usually requires emailing and scheduling a time to meet with him or her ahead of time, and you should be prepared to arrange a time based on the professor’s schedule, not yours. Professors are generally very busy, so you should be gracious and respectful if they take time out of their day to speak to you.

Lastly, some students visit a college campus for an interview. In this case, you’ll likely be having an official meeting with someone from the university’s admissions committee or another official on campus. In this case, the campus visit takes on a much more pressing and important meaning.

Additionally, you may want to carry around a small water bottle or a light snack during your campus tour. If you get hungry or thirsty while you’re walking around campus, you can’t ask the entire tour group to wait for you to go buy something from a vending machine or food stand — you need to come prepared.

What To Wear If You’re Shadowing a Student

Students tend to dress differently at each campus, so it’s impossible to completely blend in if you’re shadowing a student. However, here are a few general guidelines that we recommend.

Try to aim for a business casual or casual type of outfit. Jeans or casual pants are okay, but make sure that you couple that with a button-down shirt for men or a blouse for ladies. Be sure to wear shoes that are nice, but comfortable.You don’t have to wear heels or dress shoes, but avoid wearing the dirty sneakers you wear to the gym every day too!

Also be sure to keep your hair clean and neat and not overdo it on perfume, cologne, or makeup. Finally, remember: Chances are, no one will take much notice of you, much less scrutinize what you’re wearing. Be sure to present yourself nicely in case you run into professors or leaders of extracurriculars in which you’re interested, but you don’t have to put your absolute best foot forward. What To Wear for a College Interview

If you are visiting a college campus for an official interview, your interviewer or another official at the university may have already given you a dress code for the interview. If that is the case, follow that dress code. If dressing a little bit fancier than the dress code makes you feel better, you can go ahead and do it, but you should be careful to not dress more casually than the dress code advises.

If there is no dress code given for your interview, it is safe to assume that you should dress formally. That means professional attire, which includes slacks (or a skirt suit for women) and a button-down shirt (a nice blouse is okay for girls). Your shoes should match your clothes — so professional shoes for men or nice flats or heels for girls.

If you’re thinking about wearing heels to your interview, just keep in mind that there are certain standards that define what a professional heel and an unprofessional heel looks like. Unfortunately, the dress code for each of these activities won’t change if you decide to do more than one during your campus visit. For instance, your interviewer is not going to appreciate it if you show up in casual attire when he/she told you to dress professionally, even if you explain that you just came from a campus tour.

That means that if you can swing it, bring changes of clothing for different aspects of your campus visit. You can change in and out of outfits in bathrooms around campus so that you will fit in at your campus tour, interview, and other meetings. If you plan on bringing changes of clothing, however, beware of common nuisances like wrinkles and stains. If one of your outfits gets ruined while sitting in your backpack, you’re probably going to be out of luck.

If you don’t want to carry many different outfits around campus, always go with the fancier option if it seems practical. It’s always better to dress to impress than to dress down and draw unwanted attention to yourself.

Any high-school junior or senior about to accompany her or his mother on a college tour will feel understandably nervous about fitting in. Not about how they’ll fit in — they’re going to be just fine — but how can they keep Mom invisible in the crowd while touring each campus? In other words, how do they put their best foot forward when a parent’s feet are clad in purple Crocs?

Having just survived (and actually enjoyed) a college tour of what felt like the entire Eastern Seaboard — 10 schools, 8 states, 10 days, detailed at right — allow me to introduce my “UVI” wardrobe. Every item I’m about to recommend is designed for: 1. Utility. You may have to walk more than five miles a day — twice that if you get ambitious and try to squeeze in two campus visits in a day. 2. Versatility. One tour my daughter and I took started in 63-degree sunshine and ended 90 minutes later in a 49-degree driving rain. Don’t be “that mom” (there were plenty) in the thin sweater, open-toed sandals and no umbrella! 3. Invisibility. You may have done all the parenting and most of the financing, but this tour is not about you, Mom. Dress fashionably but not ostentatiously, concentrating on these five basics:

Official visits are an extremely exciting part of the recruiting process. If you get invited on an official visit, you’ve made it to the later stages of recruitment where you’re being seriously considered for an offer. As exciting as this event is, it can be intimidating as you will be meeting coaches and players and being evaluated in person through a variety of situations.

An important part of your preparation for an official visit is knowing what to wear. The key is to dress nicely and look presentable, showing respect to the various members of the program that you will be seeing on your visit. Men should wear a shirt with a collar and nice pair of pants like khakis, and women should pair a conservative top with full length bottoms or wear a nice dress.

With this in mind, there is some freedom in your dress – you don’t want to go overboard with something like a suit, but you definitely don’t want to dress too casually in something like sweatpants. Our recommendation is to find middle ground, and lean towards overdressing when in doubt. You’ll also need to know what other clothes to bring on your visit as you will likely be put in a variety of environments and activities. The goal with your official visit attire is to make a good impression and show that you’re respectful and humble with regard to the opportunity as a whole, and we’ll provide more detail on all of this below.

Arriving On Campus: What To Wear To The Official Visit

Official visits usually cover an entire weekend and include an overnight stay. Like we said before, you’ll probably want to bring a handful of different outfits to be prepared for the different activities that you’ll engage in.

However, the outfit that you arrive on campus with is arguably the most important. It’s part of the first impression that you’ll be making on various members of the program. You’ll want to be well-dressed as it shows the coaches that you’re humbled to be there and are taking your visit seriously. So, what does this look like?

Guys: What To Wear To Campus

Recommendations: Like we said before, you’ll want to dress sharply and err on the side of caution when you’re unsure of what to wear, because in this situation it’s safer to be overdressed than underdressed. Aside from your dress, it’s also recommended that you’re clean-shaven and that your hair is neatly combed.

Pants – nice jeans, khakis, or slacks are appropriate. Remember to wear a belt! Stay conservative with colors and stick to things like khaki, grey, or black. Shirts & Jackets - collared shirt, polo, and button downs are all appropriate. Also, it’s always a nice touch to tuck in your shirt. Depending on the weather, you may need some kind of jacket over your shirt. Some good options are a sweater, a quarter-zip or any nice pullover, or a vest – there are many possibilities here, as long as it meets the standards of the rest of your outfit . Shoes - loafers, Sperrys or anything similar works well, or even nicer dress shoes. This might depend on the outfit you choose, but a nice shoe can be a good compliment for these types of business-casual outfits. Remember to wear socks that match your outfit and are conservative in color.

Things To Avoid: Your dress on an official visit is important because it can leave a bad impression if you aren’t weary of the types of clothing that might reflect carelessness or lack of respect. You should avoid sweatpants, hoodies, baseball caps, sandals and anything else in this ultra-casual category. Also avoid wearing shirts/pants with holes or excessive designs and logos. Lastly, try to avoid overdressing with things like suits, blazers, or ties – while you’ll look very nice you might come off as a bit too intense or serious.

Like we’ve said, the key is to just find the middle ground, be conservative, and make sure that your outfit displays respect to those whom you meet. It’s not supposed to be complicated so try not to overthink it, just follow the general guidelines above and you should be in good shape.

Girls: What To Wear To Campus

Recommendations: The same advice applies to women on recruiting official visits. The goal is to just be presentable and respectful. There is plenty of freedom in what you can wear arriving on campus, but these suggestions are a good starting point.

Pants – skirt, casual dress, nice jeans, or slacks are all acceptable options. Remember a belt if needed and stay conservative with colors and designs. Shirts & Jackets - collared shirt, polo, button down, blouse or even a nice t-shirt with nice pants. If needed, some nice options for jackets are a sweater, fleece, windbreaker, vest, etc. – same idea as above, there are tons of options, just make sure that it’s within the same style and manner as the rest of the outfit. Shoes - loafers, moccasins, boots, or any nice shoe that goes well with the outfit you choose.

Things To Avoid: You’ll want to avoid anything too casual that might make you seem underdressed, while also being cautious of going overboard. Don’t wear things like sweatpants, hoodies, hats, sneakers, etc. Make sure that your skirt is on the longer side if you choose to wear one. Try to avoid wearing high heels (for walking purposes). Lastly, you don’t need anything too serious like an elegant dress or business suit, and similarly try to avoid wearing too much jewelry.

Remember that these are just some recommendations and guidelines to follow. There are plenty of other options, but stick to the rule of finding middle ground between casual and super-formal, and it’s always safer to overdress when in doubt.

The outfit that you wear when you arrive on campus is really important because it will make a good first impression and get things started on the right foot with various people that you’ll meet when you arrive.

Other Clothes To Pack

Now that you’re familiar with some recommendations of things to wear to the official visit when you first arrive, you’re probably wondering what you’ll need to pack for the entire weekend. Dinner Outfit: Many recruits are taken out to nice restaurants or steakhouses on official visits. The same guidelines for what to wear to the visit can be followed for an outfit to a nice dinner, so it could be a good idea to just pack an additional nice outfit for something like this.

Socializing & Hanging Out: Like we mentioned before, an official visit is usually an entire weekend and includes an overnight stay on campus. Part of the experience usually involves socializing with players and friends, hanging out, and having some fun! You should pack accordingly, bringing an outfit that you might wear when hanging out with some friends and something comfortable and casual for going to bed at night.

Not every official visit is the same or includes the same activities, but it’s helpful to be aware of what you might expect and let this guide you in knowing what to wear and bring on your visit.

Things To Keep In Mind

As spring starts, colleges nationwide will welcome parents and students to tour their campuses.
College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
They also recommend students take the tours on their own, without their parents.

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high-school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the backs of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides .

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late.

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort.

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, a junior at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, said .

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the résumé .

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their résumés at home," Henry Millar, a senior at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible.

Some schools offer to let parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told BI.

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations.

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, a senior at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT scores , ACT scores , or what they wrote about in their essay .

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead.

Parents may be tempted to raise their hands again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the back seat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, a junior at Reed College in Oregon, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered.

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University in California, said.

While, of course, the graduate will be the center of attention that day, there's no reason you can't look your best for the ceremony.

Skip polo shirts, luxury-style T-shirts (because it's still a T-shirt), sneakers, lug-soled shoes like work boots and sockless looks.

What should children wear?

Think in terms of outfits that mirror what parents are wearing. Although kids are often impatient with dressier outfits, especially young children, they can probably survive being dressed to impress for a few hours. Skirts and dresses are appropriate for girls, as are jumpsuits, which can be elevated with a cute sweater or jacket. Meanwhile, difficulty getting boys in suits has made room for a suitable alternative – slacks and a button-up shirt and either a jacket or tie.

Are some graduations dressier than others?

Yes. Generally, college commencements are more formal than high school graduations, which means something for attire. Many colleges and larger universities have multiple graduation ceremonies that vary in size, particularly for doctorate and other advanced degree programs such as medical and law schools. Monday night’s meeting between LSU and Iowa in the Elite Eight will offer as big of a stage as college basketball, men’s or women’s, has to offer, with the most recognizable player in the sport, Caitlin Clark of the Hawkeyes, taking on the reigning national champion Tigers, who defeated her Iowa team 102-85 to win that title last season.
