Brian Harman, Georgia Bulldogs, FedEx Cup

ATLANTA — The University of Georgia isn’t just an NFL feeder school. It’s also a PGA Tour feeder school.

There are three Georgia Bulldogs in the Tour Championship field this week, more than any other school among the Top 30.

Brian Harman was the highest-ranked Bulldog at No. 8, Russell Henley was behind him at No. 12 and Sepp Straka rounded out the field at No. 30.

Three former Bulldogs will be back in Georgia for the FedExCup Championship this week #GoDawgs pic.twitter.com/MoPzE8yrja — Georgia Golf (@UGAGolf) August 21, 2023

The Bulldogs have 10 total players on the PGA Tour, three more than any other school. Oklahoma State, Texas, Nevada-Las Vegas, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Clemson are all tied with seven players.

These players are just PGA Tour numbers, which doesn’t include the Korn Ferry Tour, Canadian Tour or other mini-tours.

Six of the 12 (including LIV players) former Bulldogs have won at least one PGA Tour event.

Head coach Chris Haack has been with the University of Georgia since 1996. He is the brains behind the whole operation. Under his belt, Haack has two national titles, eight SEC titles, 67 team tournament titles. His accolades could continue for days.

He is one of the most respected coaches in NCAA golf, and rightfully so. Haack can now add another major champion under his belt as well. Harman became the second Bulldog to win a major behind Bubba Watson, who won two Masters’ titles.

Harman began his career with the Bulldogs in 2006 and won two SEC Championships in 2006 and 2009. Hudson Swafford, Harris English and Russell Henley helped win the 2009 and 2010 SEC titles.

Now, these guys are winning tour events and majors, playing in the Ryder Cup and having successful pro golf careers.

Among the 12 guys to play on the PGA Tour, they have a total of 37 PGA Tour, 16 Korn Ferry Tour and five other non-sanctioned event wins. That brings the grand total to 58 professional wins.

Sometimes, it feels like people forget about Georgia’s success and how many golfers are still on the PGA Tour. Oklahoma State, Clemson, Stanford, Alabama and many other schools have their respective winners, but the Bulldogs are no slouch.

There is a reason Georgia has the most PGA Tour players. It’s because Haack breeds success. He instills it in his players, who continue to carry that mindset onto the PGA Tour.

The three in the Tour Championship field this week may not win, but they were still among the best 30 on Tour. They earned that right and even more bragging rights to have 10% of the field representing the ‘G.’

Stephen ames rides two final-round eagles to mitsubishi electric classic title, share this article.

pga tour championship georgia

Two of the seven events so far in 2024 have been won by a Steve: Steven Alker at the season opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii in January and Stephen Ames, who won the Chubb Classic in February.

Now, make it a third.

This follows a 2023 in which 13 of the 28 events were won by some form of a Steve, including Alker, Ames, Steve Stricker and Steve Flesch.

This week at the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia, it was Ames riding the strenth of two eagles in the final round to win by four shots over Paul Broadhurst and Doug Barron.

On the sixth hole Sunday, which is his 60th birthday, Ames grabbed a share of the lead after holing out for his first eagle of the day.

An eagle hole-out on No. 6 to take the lead! A ridiculous shot from the defending champ @StephenAmesPGA @MEClassicGolf 🔥 pic.twitter.com/cAL2hmsk6s — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) April 28, 2024

Ames took a three-shot lead on 13 when he carded his second eagle of the day after driving the green on the 310-yard par 4 to get to 14 under. From there, he had two birdies and two bogeys to close with a 67 to claim his eighth win but more impressively his sixth in his last 29 starts on the tour.

“Two reasons to celebrate tonight,” Ames said, noting the win on his birthday, which is also his third in this event. “The first day wasn’t that bad, I hit two bad shots, made two doubles. It was like, you know what, it felt good, I didn’t really kick myself down at all. Then I came out the next day and I was like it was a little calm unlike today and I just played golf and didn’t make any mistakes and I made eight birdies. So that just kind of vaulted me straight back up the board there. I was like, hey, now I give myself an opportunity and I took the opportunity in hand, which was nice.”

K.J. Choi and Steven Alker tied for fifth at 9 under.

Broadhurst, who led by a shot after 36 holes, was seeking to be the first to win back-to-back tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions since Steve Stricker won consecutive majors in May of 2023 and also the first to win back-to-back weeks on the Champions tour when Bernhard Langer did it in 2017.

Langer, out since February after tearing his Achilles playing pickleball, has announced his return to the Champions tour will come next week at the Insperity Invitational near Houston.

Jay Haas, 70, beat his age by three shots with a 5-under 67 in the second round. It’s the fourth time he’s shot his age or better during the 2024 season.

John Daly, not in the field this week, turned 58 on Sunday.

Bernhard Langer, 66, set to return to PGA Tour 3 months after tearing Achilles

By Rishikesh Rajagopalan

April 27, 2024 / 9:29 PM EDT / CBS News

From hole-in-ones to healed in three — months, that is. Bernhard Langer, a two-time Masters champion, will tee up at the PGA Tour Champions next week after tearing his Achilles tendon in February.

In a statement at the time through the PGA Tour, the 66-year-old said he tore his Achilles tendon "during training exercises."

Langer later admitted during a March interview on the "Musings on Golf" podcast that his injury came from playing pickleball.

He had announced in January that the 2024 Masters Tournament would be his last. Though Langer did appear at Augusta earlier this month and took part in the proceedings, he did not play.

The Masters - Preview Day One

On Friday, the PGA Tour Champions announced Langer's return in the upcoming Insperity Invitational in Houston, Texas, next week, along with a video documenting his recovery process from various walking boots to physical therapy — and citing Aaron Rodgers as inspiration.

"I heard from other athletes who had similar injuries, like Aaron Rodgers," Langer said in the video. "That encouraged me that I might be able to do something similar."

Rodgers, the 40-year-old quarterback for the New York Jets, tore his Achilles tendon in the Jets' season opener last September.

Langer is the current record holder for the PGA Tour Champions, a senior tour for golfers over age 50, with 46 wins. He is the only player to win the tour over age 64 – which he has done four times. Langer won the Masters in 1985 and 1993.

"If I get back to being my best again, even at my age, I still think I'm competitive. And I still think I can win on certain golf courses," Langer said in the video.

Sources: Rory McIlroy set to return to PGA Tour policy board

Rory McIlroy hopes golf's top players can compete against each other sooner rather than later. (0:51)

Four-time major championship winner Rory McIlroy is poised to return to the PGA Tour's policy board, pending a vote by the board, which could come as early as this week, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

One of the PGA Tour's most vocal supporters during its three-year battle with LIV Golf, McIlroy abruptly resigned as a player director on the tour's influential policy board in November.

He is expected to replace policy board player director Webb Simpson , who intends to step away before his two-year term expires in 2025.

McIlroy's potential return comes at a time when the PGA Tour is attempting to negotiate a final agreement with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which is financing the rival LIV Golf League.

McIlroy, the No. 2 golfer in the world, previously joined the tour's policy board in 2022 and was expected to serve through 2024. He cited personal and professional commitments in making his decision to leave the board in November.

With players from both sides bickering about money and what the sport's future should be, TV ratings for PGA Tour events are down about 20% this season. Even the Masters, the first major championship of the season, wasn't immune from golf fans' fatigue. TV ratings for the final round at Augusta National Golf Club earlier this month (9.58 million viewers) were the lowest since 2021 (9.45 million).

"I know this isn't a be-all, end-all, but if you look at the TV ratings of the PGA Tour this year, they're down 20% across the board," McIlroy said at the Valero Texas Open this month. "That's a fifth. That's big. I would say the numbers on LIV aren't great either in terms of the people tuning in.

"I just think with the fighting and everything that's went on over the past couple years, people are just getting really fatigued of it and it's turning people off men's professional golf, and that's not a good thing for anyone."

McIlroy, 34, would also join the board of directors of PGA Tour Enterprises, the for-profit entity the tour launched with Strategic Sports Group earlier this year. The other six player directors from the tour's policy board -- Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods -- are serving simultaneously on both boards. Former tour member Joe Ogilvie was added as a board liaison.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and policy board player directors met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas on March 18.

McIlroy has previously met with Al-Rumayyan to discuss the future of men's professional golf. McIlroy said Al-Rumayyan wanted to do the "right thing" with PIF's investment in golf.

"I think I've said this before, I have spent time with Yasir and his -- the people that have represented him in LIV I think have done him a disservice, so [LIV Golf CEO Greg] Norman and those guys," McIlroy said at the Players Championship in March.

"I see the two entities, and I think there's a big, I actually think there's a really big disconnect between PIF and LIV. I think you got PIF over here and LIV are sort of over here doing their own thing. So the closer that we can get to Yasir, PIF and hopefully finalize that investment, I think that will be a really good thing."

The Guardian of London first reported McIlroy's potential return to the PGA Tour policy board.

McIlroy is competing in this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event with Ireland's Shane Lowry .

Who Will Win the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro?

Ioa championship presented by morongo casino resort & spa tools of a winner: juliana hung.

  • LA Championship
  • Tournament News

pga tour championship georgia

The fans may be missing Nelly Korda this week, but it’s doubtful that her fellow competitors are. Fresh off her fifth straight win and second career major championship victory, Korda has decided to take a week off. Even though the No. 1 player in the world will be absent, the field is still terrific at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, as 144 competitors are ready to challenge one another for a share of a $3.75 million purse.

Seventeen of the top 25 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings are competing, and the top 65 and ties will play the weekend. The first-place finisher will take home $562,500, which is one of the largest non-major winner’s shares on Tour. Wilshire Country Club has hosted all five previous editions of this event, and the average winning score is 13-under. Wilshire is a classic design and a very tough test. Last year, Hannah Green won with a four-day total of 9-under as the layout played like a true major test.

The weather will be dry and moderately windy this week. Temperatures are forecasted in the mid-70s, and the par-71 layout measuring 6,447 yards will play much like it should. It’s fun to see any Tour compete at a classic venue, and this setting amongst the Hollywood Hills always gives fans tremendous theater. To predict the winner among this betting board, let’s take the traditional approach and look at the last two leaderboards.

The two most impactful strokes-gained categories that correlate to success around Wilshire Country Club are approach play and putting. The top 10 from the 2022 and 2023 leaderboards gained an average of four strokes with their iron game and flat stick. Since classic courses always seem to require great approach play, keep your eye on Minjee Lee, Alison Lee, Megan Khang and Rose Zhang. Minjee Lee won here in 2019 and has earned two more top-seven results at this property.

Putting always helps on greens like those at Wilshire. Classic complexes with putting surfaces averaging 5,000 square feet in size present small targets. This championship course is nestled in a hilly city neighborhood, so when you putt, experience with the breaks and green-reading skills are required. Mao Saigo, Hyo Joo Kim, Sarah Schmelzel and Sei Young Kim lead the field in putting ability. They should have an advantage this week, with Sei Young Kim finishing inside the top six here twice.

The par-71 layout only has three par 5s, and these holes are the key to scoring. Looking at those same two groups of top-10 finishers, each played the par 3s and 4s near par. Surviving those holes will only keep you near the rest of the competitors. To contend, you must take advantage of the par 5s.

Those same 23 athletes who finished in the last two top 10s averaged 4.66 strokes on the 5s. Patty Tavatanakit, Georgia Hall, Xiyu Lin and Charley Hull lead the field in par-5 scoring. In a race to 13- or 14-under, they will have a considerable scoring advantage.

The last characteristic this year’s champion should have is a successful scrambling percentage. Small greens, a layout with 127 bunkers and 13 holes where water comes into play will make players get creative around these tiny targets. The contenders from 2022 and 2023 were successful around the greens 64% of the time, a rate that is well above the Tour average.

In this group, Ayaka Furue, Lin, Khang and Hyo Joo Kim can really score from close range. They will need to because if they don’t hit greens in regulation like Haeran Ryu, Nasa Hataoka and Hull, their short game will be tested. It becomes pretty clear by looking at those past two leaderboards what an awesome exam Wilshire Country Club is. Favor those above who are in fine recent form.

Sei Young Kim has had a sensational spring and Haeran Ryu made a serious run at The Chevron Championship. Who are you picking?

After all, that’s the point. By selecting a couple of names, you create a connection to the action. It’s fun for me to know who’s on my list, so you should definitely write your own. Once you do, the entertainment on Sundays will draw you in like a great Hollywood ending, much like the golf will this week at the JM Eagle LA Championship.
