PGA: FedEx St. Jude Championship, Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth looked unstoppable Thursday, carding a bogey-free 7-under 63 to soar to the top of the leaderboard at the FedEx St. Jude Championship .

He made five birdies and an eagle, with his three at the par-5 16th being the highlight of the day.

Measuring 532 yards and playing as the easiest hole on the course, Spieth pushed his second shot at the 16th to the right of the green.

His ball nestled in a collection area below the putting surface, so failing to get up and down was not out of the question.

Spieth had little room for error, but the short-game wizard made it look easy. He perfectly executed the bump-and-run , rolling it into the hole for an eagle three.

Funny enough, he practiced that same shot earlier in the week.

“I hit that shot three or four times to that pin on Tuesday, and obviously different conditions—it was wetter now—but with how steep it was and how grainy it was where it was going to land, it didn’t play much different,” Spieth revealed after his round.

“It’s cool when you sit there, and you’re like, I know this is a shot I don’t want to have, but I could very much have, and it’s not a great spot, so let me just go ahead and see—you hit the exact shot to the exact pin and then [it goes in]. It was a neat shot.”

Spieth started off his round on a high note, making three birdies over the first five holes.

He made two more on the backside.

After making an eagle at the 16th, Spieth duck-hooked his tee shot on 17 so far left that it almost went out-of-bounds. He struggled with his driver at times Thursday.

“I used the heel of the driver a lot today, and I don’t want to keep doing it,” Spieth said.

“If I feel really confident stepping into a driver, getting in front of some shots, and hitting some nice ones, that normally feeds to the rest of the bag, so I’d like to improve a bit on just where [I hit it off the face.] I hit some fairways, but I hit some pretty far off the heel, and then I toe’d one at 17.”

Alas, Spieth channeled the late Seve Ballesteros on the 17th. He managed to save par, holing a nine-footer to stay bogey-free for the day.

He heads into Friday’s round holding a one-stroke lead over Tom Kim .

Emiliano Grillo and Collin Morikawa sit two back at 5-under for the championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The attention starts building weeks, if not months, ahead of the one major keeping Rory McIlroy from the career Grand Slam, the most elite club in golf. It’s like that every year, and it doesn’t make it any easier when he gets to the Masters.

Jordan Spieth should be able to appreciate the feeling. Except that he really doesn’t.

Now that McIlroy missed again at the Masters — his 10th straight attempt at getting the final leg — Spieth is next up with an opportunity to become only the sixth player in history to capture all four professional majors.

It feels like an afterthought going into the PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler tries to extend his dominance with a second straight major . Brooks Koepka is the defending champion and coming off a LIV Golf win in Singapore. Jon Rahm turned in a dud at the Masters and curious eyes will want to see at Valhalla if that was an aberration.

Oh yes, and Spieth goes for the career Grand Slam, a feat achieved only by Tiger Woods , Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.

“These things, like winning a career Grand Slam, they happen kind of when I think there’s less focus and less of a spotlight on him,” said Jim Nantz of CBS, who has covered every PGA Championship since 1991. “And I think Jordan goes into this week without a whole lot of discussion about that possibility coming up at Valhalla.

“So maybe it is favorable in that sense mentally.”

Spieth isn’t surprised the attention is not that high, certainly not at the level McIlroy has faced the last decade each time he heads to Augusta National.

One reason is his game, which has not been great . Spieth has gone just over two years since he last won a tournament and has had only a few close calls since then. He comes into the PGA Championship having missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments that had a 36-hole cut.

“He’s got more accolades,” Spieth said about the Slam hype between him and McIlroy. “He’s been a better player over his career. Maybe that creates a little noise. He’s been a bit more vocal about it himself, so maybe that makes a little bit more difference.”

The other reason is the Masters, the only major held on the same course every year.

Sarazen is the only player with the career Grand Slam who completed it at Augusta National. But that was in 1935, long before the Masters was considered a major and 25 years before Arnold Palmer first brought a professional slam into the golf conversation.

McIlroy threw away a chance in 2011 when he lost a four-shot lead in the final round at the Masters. He played in the final group with Patrick Reed in 2018 and didn’t get it done. Reminders are everywhere when he returns.

That isn’t the case for Spieth. He goes to Quail Hollow one year, Bellerive the next. He has had seven cracks at getting the missing piece of the Grand Slam on seven courses.

“For me, it’s like the PGA Championship feels decently similar to a number of tournaments we play,” Spieth said. “I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s played on some of the biggest, best golf courses. But the identity is not the same as the other three. In my mind, you don’t need to find a different way to win, versus guys who don’t have some of the other ones.

“We play a few tournaments a year that could be PGA Championships if you change the branding and the grandstands.”

Only two other players lacked only the PGA Championship for the career slam — Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson.

Jack Nicklaus referenced them last month when speaking of McIlroy’s chances at Augusta.

“Is Tom Watson good enough to win the Grand Slam? Absolutely. Was Arnold Palmer good enough to win the Grand Slam? Absolutely,” Nicklaus said.

He felt the same way about McIlroy before adding, “But they have got to do it.”

Spieth is 30 and would seem to have time on his side — but not history. Sarazen, Hogan and Woods won the final leg in their first attempt. Woods did it in the most spectacular fashion, winning the U.S. Open by 15 shots and a month later the British Open by eight. He was 24.

Player (1965 U.S. Open) and Nicklaus (1966 British Open) completed the Grand Slam on their third attempt after they had captured the third leg.

McIlroy already has had 10 cracks at the Masters since he picked up the third leg. Spieth has had seven tries at the PGA Championship since winning the third leg at Royal Birkdale in 2017.

He said it doesn’t weigh on him, at least not lately.

“I remember thinking about it in ‘17 because it was right after the Open and I was playing so well,” Spieth said. He tied for 28th at Quail Hollow.

He also said he gave the Grand Slam some thought in 2019 at Bethpage Black when he was in the final group going into the weekend with Brooks Koepka. That wasn’t really a fair fight. Koepka set the 36-hole record for majors (128), a record seven shots ahead of Spieth.

“But I don’t feel like it will build up over time, not like people talk about Rory’s building up over time,” Spieth said.

More focus is on a nagging injury to his left wrist that first surfaced right before the PGA Championship last year at Oak Hill. Spieth is trying to manage it. He also is spending more time than he imagined on the phone as part of the PGA Tour Enterprises board trying to figure out the best way forward with the Saudis.

Justin Thomas has two PGA titles — what Spieth wouldn’t do for one — and is surprised why his longtime friend doesn’t get much attention as he pursues the final leg.

“It should be the same amount of attention — you could say more because he’s younger than Rory,” Thomas said. “But that also could be a good thing. Going in under the radar is never bad.”

2024 PGA Championship odds, favorites: Scottie Scheffler on top with Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka close behind

The world no. 1 hasn't been seen in a competitive setting over the last month entering valhalla.

scottie-scheffler-rbc-heritage-r3-g.png

The man who donned the green jacket is the man to beat at the 2024 PGA Championship. Scottie Scheffler heads into the second major championship of the season as the clear-cut favorite to raise the Wanamaker Trophy, all as talks of a grand slam bid circulate the world No. 1.

Scheffler arrives at Valhalla Golf Club as a winner across four of his last five tournament starts, including his last two, the latest coming the week following the Masters at the RBC Heritage. Scheffler has not been seen since as he has tended to family matters and the birth of his first child.

Competitive rust is highly unlikely, but if Scheffler is slightly off, it does open the door for others to step through. No one else has a greater chance to step into the winner's circle Brooks Koepka. The reigning PGA champion eyes his third successful defense in a major, and he will look to grab his sixth such title at Valhalla. A win would pull Koepka alongside legends of the game like Phil Mickelson, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo in terms of major titles.

Someone who can tie Koepka is the man who raised the Wanamaker Trophy the last time this major was played in Louisville. Rory McIlroy, fresh off his fourth career win at Quail Hollow and coming off back-to-back victories overall (Zurich Classic, alongside Shane Lowry) is rounding into form at the exact right time. Now 10 years removed from his last major, McIlroy hopes to reenter the winner's circle on the major stage at the site of his last such win.

Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa, reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele and a slew of others are among likely candidates to contend this week in the Bluegrass State. Let's take a look.

2024 PGA Championship odds, favorites

  • Scottie Scheffler: 4-1

In his 15 major appearances since the start of 2020, Scheffler has two wins and eight other top-10 finishes.  A pair of those have come at the PGA Championship where he finished T4 at Harding Park and runner-up last season at Oak Hill after possessing the lead through the halfway point. There might not be anything that can stop him at the moment, though the last time he won the Masters, he did miss the cut when the PGA was played at Southern Hills.

  • Rory McIlroy: 7-1
  • Brooks Koepka: 12-1
  • Jon Rahm: 16-1
  • Xander Schauffele: 16-1
  • Ludvig Åberg: 16-1

Do you want the guy who won the last PGA Championship or the guy who won the last PGA Championship at Valhalla? Koepka comes into his title defense fresh off a win on LIV Golf, seemingly pushing his early season putting woes behind him. He's a tough defender and has entered the final round of every PGA Championship since 2018 with a chance to win -- if you remove the 2022 tournament where he was injured.

As for McIlroy, he has turned a corner since the Masters with his driver peaking and his iron play following suit. His major championship record since the start of 2022 has been stellar with three podium finishes and four other top 10s, including a pair in the last two PGAs. Oh, and the last time he won three times in a row was 2014 with the PGA Championship at Valhalla serving as the third victory.

  • Bryson DeChambeau: 22-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 22-1
  • Max Homa: 30-1
  • Joaquin Niemann: 33-1
  • Cameron Smith: 35-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 35-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 35-1
  • Wyndham Clark: 40-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 40-1
  • Justin Thomas: 40-1
  • Cameron Young: 40-1
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 45-1

Just about every player in this group is capable of winning a major championship, but which can you trust? Is it DeChambeau who raced out to the first-round lead at the Masters and last year's PGA Championship en route to quality results? Maybe it is Clark, who despite his boom-or-bust nature, has contended at some of the biggest golf tournaments this season and has proven to not be afraid of the limelight.

  • Will Zalatoris: 55-1
  • Jason Day: 55-1
  • Dustin Johnson: 60-1
  • Jordan Spieth: 60-1
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 60-1
  • Sungjae Im: 65-1
  • Min Woo Lee: 65-1
  • Byeong Hun An: 70-1
  • Sahith Theegala: 70-1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 70-1
  • Tony Finau: 80-1
  • Talor Gooch: 90-1
  • Sam Burns: 90-1
  • Shane Lowry: 90-1

Spieth is the star of this crop as he goes for the career grand slam at a time when expectations may never be lower. He has struggled with his game since late winter with four missed cuts and a disqualification in his last nine starts. Spieth's iron play has been poor, and his wrist injury is worrisome. Speaking of injuries, Zalatoris could be ripe for a longshot selection if everything falls in his favor. In 10 majors as a professional, he has three runners-up finishes and four other top-10 results.

  • Corey Conners: 100-1
  • Sepp Straka: 110-1
  • Si Woo Kim: 120-1
  • Adam Scott: 120-1
  • Russell Henley: 120-1
  • Tom Kim: 120-1
  • Dean Burmester: 150-1
  • Rickie Fowler: 150-1
  • Alex Noren: 150-1
  • Akshay Bhatia: 150-1
  • Brian Harman: 150-1
  • Nicolai Hojgaard: 150-1
  • Patrick Reed: 150-1

There's a player here who has made nine straight major cuts and tees it up in his 41st consecutive major this week. That player is Reed. The former Masters champion has a sneaky-good major championship resume with a T4 at last year's Masters and T18 at Oak Hill. He will need to drive the ball well for his standards, but Reed remains in possession of some of the best hands in golf which should be useful around Valhalla.

  • Stephan Jaeger: 170-1
  • Denny McCarthy: 170-1
  • Tiger Woods: 170-1
  • Keith Mitchell: 200-1
  • Cam Davis: 200-1
  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout: 200-1
  • Jake Knapp: 220-1
  • J.T. Poston: 220-1
  • Harris English: 220-1
  • Billy Horschel: 220-1
  • Tom Hoge: 250-1
  • Lucas Herbert: 250-1
  • Mackenzie Hughes: 250-1
  • Chris Kirk: 250-1
  • Kurt Kitayama: 250-1
  • Phil Mickelson: 250-1

Monday Leaderboard: Rory’s ready for the PGA Championship

Welcome to the Monday Leaderboard, where we run down the weekend’s top stories in the wonderful world of golf. Grab an Arnold Palmer, pull up a chair, and get fired up for the season’s second major …

Rory McIlroy’s running start

If Rory McIlroy plays the PGA Championship the way he played the final 11 on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship, nobody’s beating him. Not Scottie Scheffler, not 2000 Tiger Woods, not the ghost of Arnold Palmer. McIlroy dialed in like we’ve rarely seen; down two strokes to Xander Schauffele after seven holes, he throttled up and gained eight strokes in eight holes on Schauffele.

HOLE-OUT EAGLE FOR RORY!!! He now leads by SIX! pic.twitter.com/UE49lwfwNC — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 12, 2024

That’s GOAT-level playmaking right there, and McIlroy is now tied for 22nd all-time in PGA Tour victories. Not bad for a guy who spent the first half of the week trying to sort out whether the Tour’s policymakers even wanted him around or not .

McIlroy now heads back to Valhalla, the site of his last major win, all the way back in 2014. If you’d told someone back then that McIlroy would still be stuck on four majors all this time later, they’d assume he got bored with golf and turned pro in soccer or something. But McIlroy has been in the mix every year since then; he has at least two top-10s in majors in every year but one (2021) since 2014.

We’d like to say he looks as ready to win as ever, but this isn’t the first time he’s rolled into a major on a hot streak. He’s been one of the favorites at every single one of the 35 majors since that PGA Championship, and yet he hasn’t been able to close the deal. Maybe he will this year, maybe not, but at the very least, he’s got a hell of a running start.

Anthony Kim, Brandel Chamblee duke it out on social media

We’re well past the point of being surprised at the twists and turns golf now takes, but still … “Anthony Kim and Brandel Chamblee fight about Saudi investment in pro golf in 2024” is one hell of a weird sentence. And yet it’s totally fitting, given that LIV Golf has irrevocably changed the golf world. Chamblee has been a frequent, blistering critic of LIV and its Saudi backers, but even he has conceded that the time is right for compromise, not continued conflict. Apparently in response, Kim unleashed a flamethrower of a post on X, writing in part, “ur such a [expletive] 4 beating on ur chest & basically saying never retreat & hypocritically retreat.”

Chamblee replied , in part, “It’s the sad reality of you and your brethren on the LIV tour willingly dealing with a murderous dictator for profit so that he can hide his atrocities, that golf has had to try to figure out how to mitigate the influence of MBS, PIF and LIV in the otherwise philanthropical and merit based world of professional golf.” The beat goes on, and not a single mind was changed.

Nelly Korda’s spectacular run comes to a close

So it turns out that while winning five tournaments in a row is within Nelly Korda’s grasp, winning six was just a bit too much to ask. Korda struggled to a third-round 73 in the Cognizant Founders Cup that left her 11 strokes off the lead, and that was too much for even Korda to overcome. She would finish at T7 , 17 strokes behind winner Rose Zhang.

Still, Korda put together one of the finest runs in golf history, and the only real shame is that it didn’t do a whole lot to raise the profile of women’s golf in general or Korda herself in particular. The reasons for this are many and varied, but start with the fact that most of the Cognizant either wasn’t broadcast at all or was on premium, a la carte channels like Peacock and ESPN+. As Caitlin Clark showed, a national appetite for women’s sports is out there, but potential fans have to be able to easily see the actual sports when they’re taking place. Korda is doing her part; it’s up to the rest of the golf infrastructure to step up to her level.

Another week, another teen shines on the PGA Tour

When you tee it up with a name like “Blades Brown,” you’d better bring some game, and 16-year-old Blades Brown — yes, that’s his real name — is doing exactly that. The latest teen to hit the PGA Tour made the cut at this week’s Myrtle Beach Classic. Brown would go on to card three straight rounds in the 60s and finish T26, -10 for the week. (Chris Gotterup’s winning score of -22 was good enough to get him a last-second invitation to the PGA Championship. Nice!)

Brown signed plenty of autographs, but admitted that he wanted to get a few of his own. "Shoot, I wanted one of Joel Dahmen just because I've seen him on Netflix,” Brown said, “but Jack, my caddie, was like, 'Bro, you don't need these guys' signatures, just have them as friends.’”

Fewer committees, more golf

Somewhere out there, there’s a golf fan who is completely enraptured by the boardroom drama that’s unfolding behind the scenes as the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund do the halting awkward dance of negotiating golf’s future. This fan salivates at words like “committee,” quivers at the idea of memos and agendas. This fan loves the bureaucratic do-si-do of players and executives alike forming yet another board to plot out negotiations for a framework agreement that’s already almost five months past deadline.

Put simply: this (probably hypothetical) fan is a fool. The rest of us are fed up with the 50-car pileup that is golf’s off-course drama. To the principals involved, it must feel like Game of Thrones-level drama as they plot the sport’s future. From the outside, it sure looks like everybody’s making sure they get theirs before satisfying anyone else … including fans. Good thing we’ve got a major this week to put the focus back on the course.

The Jordan Spieth Mulligan Of The Week: Northern Lights at St. Andrews

Usually we reserve this space for the absurdities of golf — like, say, Schauffele’s ridiculous drop saga on Thursday — but today, let’s admire the beauty of the game. Check out the northern lights as they shone over St. Andrews on Friday night:

What an incredible night, always wanted to capture th #aurora #Auroraborealis above the @TheHomeofGolf pic.twitter.com/q4GfRHNk4B — Jonathan Wood (@jonwood1978) May 11, 2024

Bright enough to play by. Magnificent.

Swing away and roll ‘em true this week, friends, and we’ll see you back here next Monday!
