Many recent travelers were particularly impressed with the gems and minerals exhibit, which features artifacts like an 8-pound nugget of crystallized gold discovered in Breckenridge in 1887.

Denver's Union Station serves a dual purpose: it's a working public transit station and a highly-praised dining and shopping center. If you’re a fan of immersive art installations, you’ll probably enjoy Meow Wolf Denver, which is best described as a contemporary art museum, a haunted house, an amusement park and a film set all rolled into one 90,000-square-foot space. There are several Meow Wolf locations around the U.S., including Las Vegas and Santa Fe, New Mexico . Denver’s iteration is spread across four stories and features more than 70 distinctive installations that feature colorful lights, sounds and interactive displays. The largest permanent installation is the Convergence Station, a “multiverse transit station.”

Denver Zoo Denver Zoo

Modeled after a Kenyan nature preserve, the Denver Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals, including tigers, black rhinos, kangaroos and orangutans. Sprawling across 80 acres of City Park, this impressive facility boasts a number of ways to view our furry, feathered and reptilian friends. Head to Predator Ridge, the recreated African savanna, to see hyenas, lions and African dogs roam, watch monkeys swing from tree branches at Primate Panorama or catch a glimpse of colorful critters like Panamanian golden frogs and green tree pythons at the Tropical Discovery center. You can also overload on cute during a visit to the nursery and take on a ride on the zoo's train and carousel.

Whether you're traveling with children or alone, be sure to spend some time at the Interactive Area, where you can test your skills in the video batting cages and the Speed Pitch area. And if you've left the kids at home, take the opportunity to sample some of Denver's local brews on the Rooftop, a 38,000-square-foot platform with fantastic views of the field and downtown Denver. If the weather isn't cooperating, pay a visit to the on-site SandLot brewery instead.

Occupying 155 acres, this immense park boasts miles of jogging paths, two massive lakes and two formal gardens, one of which is a replica of George Washington's Mount Vernon gardens. Wash Park, as it’s called by locals, is a popular weekend hangout spot thanks to the variety of things to do here. You can spend your time simply relaxing on the grass, or you can take advantage of the park's 10 tennis courts, boat rentals and recreation center, which houses a pool and offers scheduled fitness classes and swim lessons.

That, combined with the view of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Denver skyline to the east, makes it a unique venue to visit.

If you can swing it, try to catch a home game. Ticket prices vary by game and availability, and you'll want to purchase your seats well in advance to ensure availability. If you can't make it to a game, you can tag along on a guided tour of the stadium. Led by employees from the on-site Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum (one of the stops on the tour), these 75- to 90-minute tours take participants to the visiting teams' locker rooms, the end zone as well as into the network television production compound and the TV and radio broadcast facilities. Open first as actual gardens as well as a zoological park in 1890, the long-running Elitch Gardens now boasts a theme park, a water park, entertainment and more. At the theme park, fly 17 stories above Denver on the Star Flyer swing ride, or dive and spin at 50 mph speeds on the Mind Eraser coaster. If thrills aren't your thing, you'll find plenty of more relaxing rides and activities in both the theme and water park, such as the Commotion Ocean wave pool and Castaway Creek lazy river.

United States Mint United States Mint free

Even if you hate the sound of excess change rattling around your pockets, you'll find a tour of the Denver branch of the United States Mint to be an interesting way to spend an hour or so. Having opened in 1863, its purpose was to transform the Gold Rush's findings into coinage. Today, the U.S. Mint in Denver can produce up to 50 million coins a day.

A free guided tour of the U.S. Mint in Denver will allow you the opportunity to learn more about each stage of coin production, from the design and sculpting of each piece to the cutting of each type of coin. Some recent visitors marveled at the coin-making machines, but say that not all travelers will likely find it enthralling.

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum

Housed in a hangar on the former Lowry Air Force Base in eastern Denver, this museum has more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space that explores the history of the base's role in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Cold War. A variety of iconic aircraft, space vehicles, artifacts and military uniforms are on display. The collection includes bombers from World War II, reconnaissance aircraft and commercial planes. One of the most iconic symbols of the Vietnam War – the Bell UH-1M Iroquois “Huey” – is among the displays. 

Past visitors enjoyed seeing the variety of aircraft and especially the replicas of “Star Wars” spacecraft. About 20 miles south of the museum is its sister location, the Exploration of Flight, which offers visitors a more immersive experience. They include a pilot simulator and actual flights in vintage and modern aircraft. The 15-acre site is located at Centennial Field, about 20 miles south of downtown Denver.

Denver botanic garden.

A very popular spot to visit during spring is the Denver Botanic Gardens. The 24 acre gardens showcase a wide range of diverse plant life, plus science and art exhibits.

Plan to go for a walk or check out the Science Pyramid, Children’s Garden, and extensive library of botanical and horticultural materials.

First Friday Art Walk

Denver offers a variety of self-guided art walks on the first Friday of each month, six different Art Walks to be exact.

View artwork from hundreds of local artists in galleries, studios, and co-ops.

The monthly event also includes live music, food trucks, drinks, boutique shopping, and of course, breweries. 

The Art District on Santa Fe and RiNo Art District host the largest and most popular art walks.

Go For A Hike

Denver is the gateway to some of the most magnificent mountain passes, hiking trails, and beautiful places in the United States.

Depending on snow totals, you may experience snow and ice on trails surrounding Denver. It’s always best to bring microspikes/crampons just in case. Alternatively, if the snow has cleared, there’s the possibility of muddy trails.

• Rockies Opening Day

One of the most beloved spring events in Denver is Rockies Opening Day.

The game marks the beginning of baseball season and the approach of summer. The atmosphere is electric, with festivities, a parade, live music, and lots of parties.

Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or a casual observer, attending Rockies Opening Day is an unforgettable experience encapsulating the spirit of Denver’s fun sports culture.

Even if you’re not able to attend the game, there’s plenty of exciting places to watch. McGregor Square has a large outdoor screen that’s very popular, additionally, just about every bar in LoDo will be playing the game for a large crowd of spectators.

Attend A Sporting Event

The Rockies aren’t the only team playing in spring.

For those who want to catch a live sporting event, check out the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and NLL’s Colorado Mammoth, who all play at Ball Arena during spring.

The MLS’s Colorado Rapids kick off their season in March and play at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, about 20 minutes from downtown.

For those who prefer college sports, check out Metro State University, University of Denver, or CU Boulder’s spring athletics.  

If you can’t attend a game, cheer on the local team at sports bars such as Stoney’s or The ViewHouse.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal is a 16,000 acre wildlife refuge located about 10 miles north of downtown, in Commerce City.

This is one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country. It’s home to deer, coyotes, migrating birds, and the refuge’s most beloved residents — the grand American bison.

There are trails around the park and a Wildlife Drive, so no matter the spring weather you have great options here. If it’s rainy and cold, the Wildlife Drive is a fun way to spend the day, and when the sun’s out, plan to hit the trails.

The refuge is open daily (excluding some holidays) from sunrise to sunset, and is always free.

Catch A Show At Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of Colorado’s most unique attractions, and one of the best things to do near Denver.

It’s the world’s only naturally-occurring, acoustically-perfect amphitheater,  and  it’s only 30 minutes west of downtown.

This music venue opened in the early 1900’s and has since seen everyone from The Beatles and Johnny Cash, to Stevie Wonder perform on its iconic stage.

Today, the venue hosts hundreds of diverse musical performances each year.

The concert season usually kicks off in April with multiple celebrity headliners throughout the week.

Even if you’re not able to attend a show, the park and amphitheater is open to visitors daily, and happens to be a common workout spot for locals.

On show days, the amphitheater will close early in preparation for the concert, so plan to arrive early.

The park is free outside event hours. 

Live Music 

Interested in more live music? On any given night Denver hosts local and national artists spanning a vast variety of genres.

Some of Denver’s most popular venues are Summit Music Hall, Paramount Theatre, The Fillmore Auditorium, The Bluebird, Grizzly Rose, and Ophelia’s Electric Soap Box. 

Additionally, you’ll find live bands at bars and breweries throughout town, especially on weekends.

The Denver Zoo is always a popular attraction in the warmer months.

It’s home to over 3,000 animals and more than 450 species, including many rare and endangered species.

The elephant, primate, and bird areas are favorites for many. There’s also a popular train ride, although the line gets long, so it’s best to ride early if possible.

This is a great family-friendly activity for a warm spring day in Denver.

Farmers Market

The Denver area has more farmers markets than I can count, and it seems a new one pops up every year.

Enjoy a Colorado day outdoors while supporting local vendors and finding great deals on fresh produce.

Many markets also include local handmade items, food trucks, and live music, all in a charming open-air setting.

Most markets don’t kick off until June, but a few start in April or May, including the City Park Farmers Market, Cherry Creek Fresh Market, and Boulder County Farmers Market.

Go For Rooftop Drinks

Drinking on a rooftop is a beloved pastime in Denver.

Our 300 days of sunshine, combined with love for libations, makes rooftop drinking sessions a no brainer.

While spring definitely sees a handful of snow days, it also sees a lot of sunshine and warm, mild weather.

Gather with friends or family and hit up popular rooftop bars in Denver such as:

• 54thirty Rooftop (Downtown)
• ViewHouse Ballpark (LoDo)
• Tap Fourteen (LoDo)
• The Red Barber (RiNo)
• The Woods (RiNo)
• Avanti Food & Beverage (Highlands)
• El Five (Highlands)
• Linger (Highlands)
• Rare Bird (Cherry Creek)

As spring melts away winter, Denver’s ample public golf courses quickly shift into high gear.

There’s no better way to enjoy a sunny Denver day than hitting a tiny white ball ever closer to that far-off hole in the ground.

Downtown Denver’s City Park Golf Course is probably the crown-jewel of the public golf scene, with a brand-new clubhouse and incredible downtown skyline views.

You can also play some of the oldest golf courses in the Western US at either Overland or Willis Case, and short drives away are some of the state’s premier public courses, Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Broomfield, Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, and Fossil Trace in Golden.

Prefer to keep it on the low-key side? Try out Topgolf instead.

Topgolf is a very popular entertainment complex which combines elements of a driving range with games and entertainment.

Whether or not you’re experienced in the sport, it’s very beginner-friendly and a fun way to enjoy the game.

In addition to the actual golf aspect, the complex also has a bar, restaurant, and other entertainment, making for a great social setting. 

There are two Topgolf facilities near Denver, one about 30 minutes north in Thornton, and the other about 30 minutes south in Centennial.

Tip: For those who’d rather stay downtown, there’s a number of indoor golf bars in Denver like Puttshack Denver and Holey Moley Golf Club Denver. These are really fun and far from an average mini golf experience.

Denver Art Museum

Located in the core of downtown is one of the largest art museums in the US, and a perfect place to visit on a rainy or snowy spring day in Denver.

This stunning, two-building complex houses nearly 100,000 works, which span centuries from across the world. 

I particularly enjoy their display of Native American Arts, which is one of the largest in the world of this kind.

Tip:  Art-lovers, be sure to also check out the Clyfford Still Museum, located just across the street from the Denver Art Museum. This is a minimalist showcase for the large-scale paintings and archives of the abstract artist.

Spring storms in Denver come and go quickly, and the snow melts rapidly this time of year, leaving behind little trace of winter.

That, however, is not the case for higher elevations, where you’ll find Colorado’s famous ski resorts. The mountains see lots of snow accumulation throughout winter and well into spring.

In fact, spring is one of the best times to ski in the Rockies. This is thanks to deep snow levels, plus lots of bluebird and powder days.

With some of the world’s best skiing just a few hours from downtown, a day trip from Denver is a no brainer.

Popular ski resorts like Keystone, Winter Park, Arapahoe Basin, Copper, Breckenridge, and Vail are all about 1.5 – 2.5 hours from Denver.

Resorts like Steamboat Springs and Aspen require more like 3 – 3.5 hours each way.

Keep in mind, mountain traffic is very heavy, especially on weekends, and road closures are common.

Check the Colorado Department of Transportation’s  COTrip  for up-to-date conditions and closures.

There’s also a bus which takes skiers from Denver to popular ski resorts: Snowstang Bus .

Visit A Brewery

Denver has been dubbed “The Napa Valley of Beer” thanks to nearly 100 breweries in the city, plus hundreds more throughout the state.

But really, it’s the locals and our unrelenting appetite for craft brews which has made Denver synonymous with beer.

So, those looking for something to do in Denver this spring, should definitely consider grabbing a beer from a local brewery.

As I alluded to above, there are far too many to list here, but the RiNo neighborhood has the highest concentration of breweries, so it’s a good place to start.

Additionally, most breweries will have entertainment throughout the week such as trivia, games, and live music.

Go For A Bike Brewery Tour In RiNo

Up for a bike brewery tour? Head to RiNo, The River North Art District, located on the outer fringes of downtown, just north of Coors Field.

The area has experienced a massive industrial revival in the past decade. Old warehouses and factories have been transformed into fun new restaurants, breweries, and art galleries.

While many buildings still maintain their industrial feel, they’ve been heavily modernized and brightened with massive murals from local artists… seriously,  so  many murals.

Explore the area by following a bike brewery bike tour, such as this one:

• Start at Bierstadt Lagerhaus, head to Ratio Beerworks, then Odell Brewing Company.
• Stop for a bite to eat at Shake Shack, The Walnut Room, or Improper City.
• Then head over to Black Shirt Brewing Co. or Blue Moon Brewing Company.
• Grab another bite at Zeppelin Station before heading home. 

If you want a break from beer, substitute one of the above stops with Stem Ciders, The Infinite Monkey Theorem, or The Block Distilling Co. 

Rather skip the bike tour? Go for a guided  walking tour  of the area’s best breweries instead.

• Denver Restaurant Week

Denver Restaurant Week is a favorite annual event which showcases the city’s growing culinary scene.

For about 10 days in early spring, participating restaurants offer special prix fixe menus at discounted prices.

This allows diners to try new cuisines and restaurants, all for a lower cost than normal.

It’s a beloved tradition for food enthusiasts and casual diners alike. Find information for this year’s event at Denver Restaurant Week .

Denver Museum Of Nature & Science

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science provides exhibitions, programs, and activities regarding the natural history of Colorado, earth, and the universe. 

This massive Smithsonian Institute affiliate houses more than one million objects in its collection.

There’s a huge range of exhibits here, from geological materials to full-scale space exploration replicas. 

You can easily spend a full day at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, making it one of the easiest things to do in Denver during spring.

Tip:  Also check out their outdoor terraces, which offer sweeping views of City Park and the Denver skyline.

Bocce, ping pong, bowling, darts, board games and other fun entertainment can be found at game bars throughout Denver.

This is a fun way to spend a night out with friends when it’s not warm enough for rooftop and patio drinks.

Flight Club Denver, Punch Bowl Social, The Monkey Bar, Rhein Haus, Table Top Tap, ViewHouse, and Ace, Eat, Serve are among favorites.

Of course, The 1up is also a must-consideration, as it’s the largest arcade bar in the United States.

Snowshoe In Rocky Mountain National Park 

As mentioned previously, high elevations still see lots of snow in spring. So, if you’ve always dreamed of seeing Rocky Mountain National Park covered in snow, this is still a good time to go.

I’m always blown away by how beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park is in the colder months. Best of all, it’s not nearly as busy as summer.

RMNP has an abundance of snowshoeing routes great for many skill levels. My favorite is Dream Lake & Emerald Lake. The trail is usually packed enough that visitors can do the hike with just microspikes, although I like to keep snowshoes with me just in case.

Never snowshoed? Don’t worry, snowshoeing is fairly easy, especially on the well packed trails of RMNP.

For those who don’t have snowshoes or spikes, rent them in Estes Park from Estes Park Mountain Shop.

There is  no   Timed Entry Permit requirement for spring. Permits are required beginning Memorial Day Weekend.

Indoor Rock Climbing

When bad weather brings outdoor pursuits to a halt, consider hitting one of the city’s many indoor rock climbing gyms.

This is a fun way to get an active work out or stay in shape for climbing season.

Some of the top gyms in Denver include Denver Bouldering Club, Übergrippen Indoor Climbing Crag, The Spot Bouldering Gym, and Movement RiNo.

The Butterfly Pavilion

Located just 15 minutes from Denver, in Westminster, is a perfect indoor activity for spring, the Butterfly Pavilion.

Visitors can interact with butterflies and other insects fluttering around a lush indoor rainforest, surrounded by greenery and water features.

The brave can even hold the pavilion’s most famed resident, Rosie, a Chilean Rose Hair tarantula.

This is a fun one for kids and adults alike.

Union Station

Historic Denver Union Station is a great place to visit no matter the time of year.

Thanks to the stunning, multi-million renovation back in 2014, this 125 year old building is a centerpiece of lower downtown Denver. 

It’s far from a normal train station. Here you’ll find visitors and locals side-by-side sipping cocktails, dining, and browsing the bookstore, while children run through the pop-up fountains and commuters bustle by.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a big party and festive celebration of all things Irish.

With colorful floats, marching bands, and Irish dancers, the parade creates a very lively atmosphere throughout downtown Denver.

Thousands of spectators watch the parade, and bars along the route will be overflowing with boisterous revelers, green beer in hand.

From families to party-goers, people of all ages enjoy this cherished Irish tradition in the Mile High City.

Visit A Food Hall 

Denver food halls host local restaurants, modish bars, and specialty shops all under one roof.

Abandoned industrial warehouses, factories, and old airport hangars have created unique settings for food halls to flourish.

Denver is (happily) overflowing with this popular concept, which draws in locals and visitors in droves.

Denver Milk Market, Avanti Food & Beverage, Denver Central Market, Milepost Zero, The Source Hotel + Market Hall, and The Stanley Marketplace are a few of the many great options.

Relax In A Park

Denver has a  ton  of parks, over 200 in fact, totaling over 5,000 acres of urban recreation.

Spend a few hours taking a relaxing stroll, lounging out on the grassy lawn, having a picnic, or people watching. 

Note:  Alcohol is allowed in most city parks, but no glass permitted.

City Park is Denver’s largest park and where you’ll find the Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

There’s many other “smaller” parks worth checking out as well, such as Confluence Park on the South Platte River, Sloan’s Lake, Cheeseman Park, and Washington Park. 

Denver Selfie Museum

If you find yourself in Denver on a day when outdoor activities are out of the question, visit the Denver Selfie Museum!

This is a fun, interactive museum with an array of quirky and colorful sets designed as selfie backdrops.

It’s easy to spend an afternoon here with friends or family, especially during a snowy or particularly cold spring day in Denver.

• Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park

Elitch Gardens is an amusement park with a mix of roller coasters, entertainment, and family-friendly attractions right in the heart of downtown.

The park greets visitors with a cute ‘main street’ right at the entrance, which is lined with shops, dining, and games. Plus the actual amusement park area and water park, the latter of which doesn’t open until Memorial Day.

This is a fun one for the family or adrenaline seeking, roller coaster lovers.

The park opens for the summer season in late April.

• Meow Wolf Denver

Meow Wolf is an immersive art experience that will keep you entertained for hours, words hardly do it justice.

Get lost (literally) in this incredible 90,000 square foot, 4-story interactive art exhibit created by over 300 diverse artists. 

This has quickly become one the city’s most visited attractions, and it’s especially great to explore when it’s snowing or particularly cold.

Go Shopping

A popular activity while visiting Denver is to go shopping.

Shopping here is unique in that you can find lots outdoor gear (check out REI’s flagship store!) and some western wear too.

There’s plenty of regular shops as well. Check out Larimer Square for local boutiques, 16th Street Mall for popular retailers, Cherry Creek Mall for designer brands, or South Broadway for a diverse selection of boutique and antique shops.

Go For A Day Trip

Head to the mountains and experience some of the state’s best outdoor attractions and charming small towns.

You could spend a full day exploring the Rockies and still be back in Denver in time for dinner!

March : 56° / 27° (average high / low F°) — Total 11.5” inches of snow on average. April : 63° / 34° — Total 8.8” inches of snow on average. May : 73° / 45° — Total 1.7” inches of snow on average.

As I’ve mentioned ad nauseam, Denver spring sees an interesting juxtaposition of weather, with quick shifts and swings.

March and April are the snowiest months in the city, but yet, pleasant and mild days are much more common than snow days.

Snow storms are wet and heavy this time of year, but melt very quickly thanks to the warm spring sun, which quickly follows a storm.

If visiting Denver in spring, be prepared for winter or summer weather, it’s very possible to get both in one weekend.

As you can see, there are tons of great things to do in Denver in the spring. I hope you’ve found this helpful and have the best time!

1. st. patrick’s day parade.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Denver is the largest of its kind in the western US. Nearly half-a-million people gather to watch floats and entertainment make its way down a few streets in Denver, while the majority of the route is on Blake St.

The official parade site notes that the best place for families to watch is between 23rd and 27th on Blake St.

The parade is a big party that celebrates Irish culture. It welcomes hundreds of thousands of people and takes over 300 volunteers to run.

2. Olde Town Arvada St. Patrick’s Day Festival

This is outside the downtown area, but if you don’t have a car, you can still ride the rail or bus to Olde Town Arvada.

The Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, Old Town Arvada throws a great, family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day celebration. They bring in nearly 100 vendors, live music and bagpipes, and more.

It’s free admission and the whole family is invited. The kids will love the kids zone and the whole family will get there pick of nourishment with all the food trucks.

3. Restaurant Week in Denver

If you’re in Denver in March, you’re sure to have a great foodie experience if you land during Restaurant week.

Restaurant week runs 10 days, weekend-to-weekend, so if you have a few days in Denver, it’s worth trying to get a reservation and experience these great menus.

During this time, participating restaurants will offer unique, delicious menus to restaurant week participants. There are options for to-go, but it’s best to make a reservation and enjoy the entire experience.

Choose from gourmet food halls that source local ingredients and powerful flavors to sit-down seafood restaurants where the food is flown in daily.

There are restaurants all over the Denver area, including the tech center (DTC) and Cherry Creek. The foodie week has grown to over 200 participating restaurants.

303 Day is a bit of a random, unofficial day of celebration in Denver. The main area code for Denver and surrounding areas is 303, making March 3rd significant.

Local radio stations will host concerts by local musicians and help locals celebrate Denver on this day.

Another celebration in Denver in March is the Denver March Powwow. This has been going on for nearly 5 decades and celebrates Native American heritage.

For one weekend in March, people from 100 tribes and many many states (and even Canada) come to celebrate, sing, dance, story tell, and honor their Native American heritage.

Enjoy the Grand Entry that starts each day with raising the flag. Attendees can also join in with dancing to the drums and music.

This is a great cultural experience for families. It’s quite affordable, and children 6 and under are free.

6. Red Rocks Easter Sunrise

Easter doesn’t always fall in March, but sometimes it does. Regardless of it being in March or April, everyone is invited to join in the Red Rocks Easter Sunrise service.

Doors open early and worship begins around 5:30. By 6am, the service will begin. The sun will rise shortly after and attendees can experience a magical moment from the stunning Red Rocks Amphitheater.

The event is free to attend, and parking is free as well (making it a great free thing to do in Denver with the family).

7. Go Sledding

For some fun, cheap outdoor adventures, grab a sled and head to a local hill for some family-fun sledding.

Here are a few local favorites when it comes to sledding hills:

• Ruby Hill Park (1200 W Florida Ave)
• Prairie Meadows Park (Prairie Meadow Dr and Uinta)
• Robinson Park (200 Fairfax St)
• Central Park (8801 MLK Jr Blvd)

8. Go Snow Tubing

If you don’t mind a little drive, you can head to a few places that provide full tubing experiences!

Hoedown Hill is just an hour north in Windsor. The place is versatile since you can snow tube or learn to ski. Hoedown Hill is home to the longest tubing run in North America- the Bushwhacker.

Colorado Adventure Park is an hour-and-a-half away up in the mountains of Fraser. It’s one of the more affordable places to tube, and it also offers snowshoeing and fat biking.

Echo Mountain is just under an hour away from the city. This makes it the closest place to snow tube near Denver. Echo Mountain has 6 lanes and offers night tubing on a couple days each week.

9-15. Indoor Attractions Around Denver

While you’ll still get plenty of sun in March in Denver, you’re likely to run into some wintery conditions as well.

All that means is that you may want to head to some indoor activities in Denver. Here are a few that will keep the whole family entertained!

Meow Wolf- an illusionary type of attraction, heavy on senses of sight and sound.

Downtown Aquarium – Plenty of sea life to discover, plus a tiger and mermaids! Makes sure to eat at the Aquarium Restaurant which is the coolest ocean atmosphere you’ve been to.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science – This is a favorite! We love seeing the mummies and learning all about space. My kids really love the hands-on activities and challenge course as well.

Molly Brown House- Molly Brown was a Titanic survivor, but she actually did so much more in the community.

Children’s Museum – Located just beyond the aquarium you’ll find the popular Children’s Museum. All ages will find something to explore and play with here.

Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum – Witness the first hospital helicopter, how pilots navigated their way before GPS, a moon rock from the Apollo 15 mission, and more.

Colorado State Capital- Take a free tour of the capital building to admire its famous dome and hefty amount of Colorado Rose Onyx. Check out the Colorado supreme court area as well as house and senate chambers.

16. Take a Winter Hike near Denver in March

Hiking isn’t just for summer. When you’re in Colorado, hiking is a year round adventure.

If the weather is agreeable, grab some sturdy hiking boots and find your way to a local hike.

For an easier stroll, head to Sloan’s Lake or Wash Park for a lake view on your walk.

For something a little more off-road, head to Red Rocks for easy, flat trails among red rock scenery.

And if you have snowshoes with you, take the drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a real treat in scenery.

Bonus: If you do head up to Rocky Mountain National Park, then check out the events going on in Estes Park as long as you’re up there. Events range from calm Art Walks on the first Friday to the bizzare Frozen Dead Guy Days on St. Partrick’s Day weekend. This usually involves a Polar Plunge as well.

17. Hit the Slopes

March brings some of the best skiing to Colorado. If you’re able to get out of the city, take the trip over to the ski resorts (some big resorts just an hour and a half away, like Breckenridge ) and spend a day on the mountain.

With high levels of snow and a good chance at sunshine, skiing over spring break can be incredible!

Some of the closer resorts include Breckenridge, Keystone, A Basin, Loveland, Echo Mountain, and Eldora.

To avoid hitting ski traffic, consider making a little weekend trip into the mountains.

Weather in Denver in March

Average lows start the month in the low 20s and end the month in the high 20s. But those are the nighttime chills. While March may be the snowiest ( averaging 11.5″ in the month of March), it still has plenty of fair-weather afternoons.

That said, those are averages. If you end up in Denver during a blizzard, make sure to dress warmly in layers. And if it does blizzard, don’t worry. You’ll see the sun soon enough.

From fresh seafood flown in daily and Colorado grass-fed beef and lamb to international fusions and innovative vegetarian dishes, there's something for everyone during Denver Restaurant Week. Dine-in and take-out options are available at four price points: $25, $35, $45, and $55.

If you’re dining in, tables fill up quickly, so be sure to make reservations. 

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Get your green ready and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Denver on Saturday, March 16th.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of Denver’s longest-running traditions. Every year since 1962, the parade has gotten bigger and better. From floats and local celebrities to live bands and dancing, it’s a day filled with fun for everyone.

The parade takes place in Downtown Denver. It starts at Wynkoop St. and 19th Ave (Coors Field), turns southeast down 17th Ave, then turns northeast on Blake St. until 27th Ave.

The parade starts at 9:30 AM, but many people start settling in a few hours before to avoid traffic and get a spot to watch the parade. There are many nearby restaurants and bars to go to before, during, and after the parade.

There’s also a St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl after the parade with live music, free entry to the best bars in Denver, and food and drink specials.

Relax at Oakwell Beer Spa

If you want to unwind and enjoy a unique experience, Oakwell Beer Spa is one of the best things to do in Denver in March. It’s a day spa and craft beer taproom where you can enjoy rejuvenating spa services and locally brewed beer.

Ticket prices range from $0 to $12. Friday is hero day, so military, veterans, police, and other first responders get free admission. Sunday is teacher appreciation, so educators and other school employees get free admission. Home industry workers and kids 12 and under are free all weekend. 

Visit the Denver Botanic Gardens

While the Denver Botanic Gardens is a beautiful place to visit year-round, March brings new blossoms and events. 

As one of North America's most diverse botanical gardens, Denver Botanic Gardens has seven major living plant collections and many themed gardens. There are also various kid and adult-friendly exhibits. There are two special events at the Denver Botanic Gardens in March:

• Mo'Print Open Portfolio and Sale - Saturday, March 9th from 9 AM to 3 PM
• Water Day - Saturday, March 23rd from 10 AM to 4 PM

Explore Red Rocks Park

Red Rocks Park is about a half hour from Denver and the perfect place to go if you want to get outside. The park is an amazing place to explore and take pictures, with stunning red rock formations.  There are various hiking and biking trails throughout Red Rock Park. There’s also a gift shop with unique items and fascinating exhibits.

While it might be a bit chilly in March, and there may even be some snow, afternoons are usually sunny and the ideal temperature for getting outdoors.

See a Show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre

The most iconic feature of Red Rocks Park is the amphitheater, an open-air theater surrounded by picturesque red rocks and mountain scenery. 

Shows at Red Rock Amphitheatre really start in April. However, there are two events you can attend in March: Boogie T on March 30th and an Easter Sunrise Service on March 31st. 

Even if you don’t attend either of these concerts, you can check out the space when you visit the park. The area is open for walking around and taking pictures.

Beaver Creek is a great place to ski in March with powder days, slush bumps, and lots of sun. Enjoy Fun Fest in the village on Saturdays, and bask on the sunny decks at the lodge when you need a break.

Copper Mountain

For a quick spring skiing getaway from Denver, Copper Mountain is convenient and offers great skiing with fresh snow in March. Copper Live, a free music festival, also takes place in March.

Soak in the Hot Springs

One of the best things to do in Colorado in any season is soak in the hot springs, but it’s extra nice to relax in the warm water in March. Some of the best hot springs in Colorado include:

• Glenwood Springs – ​​With quick access from the Front Range, a weekend getaway to Glenwood Springs is a must-do. We love coming here because the main hot springs are very kid-friendly. Our toddler loves to splash and play – even in winter!
• Strawberry Park – Strawberry Park features a natural setting near Steamboat Springs , making it an oasis in the mountains. While it’s family-friendly during the day, at night it is clothing optional, and there are no lights after dark.
• Orvis – Orvis is by far my favorite hot spring in Colorado. It’s low-key and relaxing. My favorite visit was during a winter blizzard – totally magical to be in steamy water while the snow is falling!

Explore Garden of the Gods

The red sandstone formations are always gorgeous, but seeing Garden of the Gods dusted in snow is other-worldly!

Most of the Garden of the Gods hiking trails are easy and a lot of them link together, so you can choose your own adventure to explore the park.

Take a Winter Hike in Rocky Mountain National Park

For a classic Colorado adventure in March, head to Rocky Mountain National Park to find some of the best winter hikes in Colorado .

The hike to Emerald Lake is a must-do, and it’s especially cool when the lakes are frozen over.

Local Tip: Visiting Rocky Mountain National Park in winter is nice because you’ll encounter fewer crowds, and you don’t need a timed entry reservation. However, be aware that Trail Ridge Road closes in winter.

Get Away to the Mountain Town of Durango

If you want the full winter mountain town experience in Colorado in March, you’ll find lots of fun things to do in Durango .

Take a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad through the San Juan National Forest to get an awesome perspective on the area.

Road Trip to Colorado National Monument

March is the perfect time to visit Colorado National Monument, one of the most underrated Colorado attractions before it gets too hot in the summer.

The hikes at Colorado National Monument take you through a stunning desert landscape of incredible red rock formations.

With the close of winter upon us and as we head into spring, March in Colorado can be an unpredictable month with extreme weather patterns. Spring snowstorms are met with warm, summer-like days, leaving most things to do in March up in the air.

Ski resorts anticipate their potential closing dates, spring events get everyone excited for warmer weather on the horizon, and the days start to get longer as we say goodbye to winter in the Rockies. To help celebrate the coming of spring in Colorado, discover these fun mile-high activities this March, listed below.

Here are some things to do in CO during March 2024:

Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in Colorado

While most of Colorado will host their versions of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, two big events are well-known throughout the state. Centered are elaborate parades in downtown Colorado Springs and Denver, these are exciting events to attend. This year they’re on the same Saturday so pick your location and get there early.

Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Perhaps the biggest St. Patty’s Day event in Colorado, the Denver St. Patrick’s Day parade is a long-time tradition in the Mile High City that both locals and tourists enjoy every year. In its 60th year, the parade will be bigger and better than ever before with hundreds of colorful floats, dancers, performers, and music, all honoring our police, fire, and first responders. The parade begins at 9:30 am at Wynkoop and 19th.

Colorado Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade

In its 38th year, the Colorado Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade rivals its neighbor in Denver with its biggest community event of the year. The parade starts at noon at the corner of Tejon Street and E. St. Vrain in downtown Colorado Springs. Beyond the parade, there are running and cycling events, plus the Sports & Wellness Expo at the Mining Exchange.

Enjoy a unique March festival

March in Colorado is filled with plenty of events to keep you busy and thinking about the spring season. From coffin races in the mountains to popular annual bird migration, there is a unique and fun event to fill your calendar every weekend this month.

Monte Vista Crane Festival

Every year in early spring, the migration of the sandhill cranes makes its way through the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge in southern Colorado. Thousands of cranes choose this refuge as their home from mid-February through mid-April during which visitors can view the activity of these beautiful birds up close.

In celebration of this natural wonder, the town of Monte Vista hosts the Crane Festival , which features wildlife tours, guest speakers, a craft fair, and photography workshops. 2024 is the 51st anniversary of the festival, bringing extra excitement to the event.

Frozen Dead Guy Days

Maybe one of the more unique events in Colorado, Frozen Dead Guy Days is a springtime tradition dating back over 20 years. This native festival pays tribute to Bredo Morstal, who is currently frozen and housed in a Tuff Shed on dry ice above the town of Nederland. The three-day festival features live bands paired with local craft brews, food, and a few thousand of your closest friends.

But the highlight of the festival is the unique events held throughout the weekend, including coffin racing, icy turkey bowling, human foosball, costumed polar plunging, a frozen t-shirt contest, plus a showing of the documentary Grandpa Bredo . If there is one event to add to your Colorado bucket list, this is it. FDGD is one of the strangest festivals around .

Find your new favorite restaurant

Denver hosts their 20th annual Restaurant Week this month, featuring hundreds of participating eateries that offer set-price menus. For either $25, $35, or $45 you’ll have a three-course meal experience at an array of restaurants around town. Everything from international cuisines to award-winning chef creations and even food halls is included in this 10-day event, so be sure to poke around and try out somewhere new.

Catch a game at Ball Arena

Denver is loaded with professional sports teams , and March is primetime for games at Ball Arena. Whether your sport is hockey, basketball, or lacrosse, consider giving any of the teams a chance. Watch the Colorado Avalanche take on all their NHL rivals, the Nuggets charge toward the NBA playoffs, or even a few rounds of NCAA March Madness. Not to be underestimated, the Mammoth might put on an exciting NLL show at Ball Arena .

Hit the slopes after dark

Ski resorts like Keystone, Steamboat Springs, Granby Ranch, Howelsen Hill, and Echo Mountain offer night skiing for those who just can’t get enough during the day. While night skiing at these resorts is available throughout the ski season, temperatures in March and into April are a bit more bearable than they are in the dead of winter. Be sure to check the resort’s websites, as each varies in their night skiing schedules.

It’s one of the crown jewels of Colorado in any season. In the warmer months, you’ll often find long lines to enter the park and crowded trails. If you visit Rocky Mountain in March, you’ll be greeted with a much different scene. It’s the prime month of off-season bliss. Your drive through Estes Park on the way to the park will be free of traffic, and you can explore the downtown without crowds. Once you get in, enjoy snow-covered peaks in all their glory. Without the freezing temperatures of winter. But you can save on shoe leather by riding the free shuttle bus on the  16th Street Mall  –  it makes everything in downtown easy to reach and stops at every corner. Renowned architect I.M. Pei designed the gray and pink granite pathway to resemble the pattern of a diamondback rattlesnake. Denver Union Station

The historic, Beaux-Arts 1914 train terminal is now a foodie destination, with a dozen restaurants and bars, from farm-to-table favorite  Mercantile dining + provision  to the  Terminal Bar , situated in the station's old ticket windows. A handful of local retailers includes a branch of the popular  Tattered Cover Book Store .  Union Station is also fulfilling its original role as a major ground transportation hub, serving as an Amtrak, light rail and shuttle bus station with direct rail service to  Denver International Airport .

Denver art museum.

Denver Art Museum  recently celebrated the reopening of the Martin Building (formerly known as the North Building). First opened in 1971, the fortress-like structure was designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates. The building has been fully renovated with expanded gallery space, plus stunning views of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains. The building showcases Asian art, Indigenous arts of North America, Northwest Coast and Alaska Native, European and American art before 1900, Latin American and art of the ancient Americas, photography, textile art and fashion, and Western American art collections. The museum's other striking building resembles a titanium crystal with peaks and shards designed by Daniel Libeskind.

Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still, considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century, was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists. The Clyfford Still Museum , which opened at the end of 2011, was founded to promote the late artist's work and legacy. Still's estate – 2,400 artworks – has been sealed off from the public since 1980.

The Blue Bear at the Colorado Convention Center

The   Colorado Convention Center  is home to “I See What You Mean,” AKA the giant  Blue Bear   that peers into the Center’s interior. Created by Colorado-based artist Lawrence Argent, the curious blue bear stands 40 feet tall – you can walk under it and get a great photo.

The History Colorado Center , one of Denver’s newest cultural attractions, is designed to ignite imaginations of all ages about Colorado history through high-tech and hands-on exhibits, programs for children and adults, and special events.

Colorado State Capitol

Stand exactly 5,280 feet above sea level (one mile high!) on the west steps of the  Colorado State Capitol , then climb to the rotunda for a panorama of snowcapped peaks. It is against state law to block the view of the 200 named mountains visible from the dome. Free tours are available on weekdays. 

Colorado Railroad Museum

Surrounded by towering Western buttes, the  Colorado Railroad Museum  combines a spectacular location with more than 100 narrow and standard gauge locomotives, cabooses and cars. Exhibits include a working Roundhouse, model railroads, photographs and artifacts, much of it housed in a replica of an 1880s-style depot. Train rides every Saturday on the Galloping Goose take guests on a third of mile loop of track, while "Steam ups" and special events including "A Day Out With Thomas" occur throughout the year. 

Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave

Welcome to the Wild West! Buffalo Bill Cody's exciting story as Pony Express rider, army scout, buffalo hunter and showman comes to life at the  Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave , high atop  Lookout Mountain . Enjoy views of the snowcapped Rockies in one direction, the Great Plains in the other. For those with strong nerves, drive to the museum on the hairpin  Lariat Loop Drive  ... then continue to I-70, exit 250, to see   a live herd of buffalo .

Parks & Outdoor Fun

Confluence park.

Denver was founded at  Confluence Park  as a gold mining camp in 1858. Today, the river park is the heart of Denver's  bike trail network , and is surrounded by attractions. Ride the  Platte River Trolley  to the  Downtown Aquarium  to see stingrays and sharks and The  Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus , with dozens of interactive "playscapes" for younger kids; eat and drink in the nearby neighborhoods of  Riverfront ,  LoHi  and  Highlands . City Park, Denver's largest park, has several lakes, spectacular mountain views, a public golf course, flower gardens and a hiking/jogging trail that is exactly one mile high. It's also where you'll find Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science  (DMNS). 

Washington Park

Known locally as Wash Park, it's consistently picked by residents as their favorite. The long, rectangular park has two lakes, paddle boat rentals, bike rentals, shade trees, a two-mile jogging path, mountain views and a huge area for volleyball tournaments, but it's the gardens that people like the best. Dogs on leashes are welcome and on most days there are almost as many canines as humans. Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park

The only downtown theme park in America is really two parks in one: on one side of Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park, experience 53 thrill rides, including looping roller coasters; on the other side, cool off in a wet 'n' wild water park with tubes waterslides and wave pools. The park is open from early May to early November.

"Behind the Seams" tours of  Coors Field  are available during the offseason and provide a behind-the-scenes look at one of the premier ballparks in Major League Baseball. All tours begin at Gate D (20th & Blake Street). Tours last 75-80 minutes and cover a distance of about one mile. All tours are accessible for guests with disabilities. Also, don't miss the  Sandlot , a brewery in Coors Field that is open year-round. 

McGregor Square

Right next door to Coors Field is McGregor Square, which shouldn't be missed by sports fans. It's comprised of three towers that include The Rally Hotel and the Milepost Zero food hall surrounding a 17,000-square-foot plaza that hosts year-round events like concerts, festivals and movie nights. The plaza has a stadium-sized LED screen. Catch a game at  Tom’s Watch Bar,  get a bite to eat at  Carmine's or browse the books at Tattered Cover Book Store. 

Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

Come see the  Colorado Sports Hall of Fame , a free museum honoring Colorado sports legends. Open Thursday-Saturday (summer Monday-Saturday) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, visit  Empower Field at Mile High . Tours begin each half-hour and are 75 minutes in length. This is your chance to see the 'back of the house" where the Broncos play.

Colorado March For Life happening Friday in Denver

DENVER, Colorado — The Colorado March for Life is set to begin at our state's capitol on 4/12/24. There's a pre-rally concert at 10:00 a.m. then a rally at 11:00 a.m. with the march starting a noon. The march is being hosted by March for Life and Pro-Life Colorado. They hope to "empower women to choose life, and to defend the dignity of the unborn."

Registration is not required for the event, and the organizers are encouraging folks to get creative and bring their own signs. March For Life has fifteen other state marches across the United States, all happening over the course of several months. The group plans on hosting this event every year now. ____

Saturday. Denver’s Westwood neighborhood continues to be one of the best places to dine on and learn about the cuisine of Mexico and other Latin American countries as it hosts festivals celebrating everything from tamales to salsa to mole. Today, Cultura Chocolate and Hecho en Westwood host their fourth annual Festival del Pozole , featuring more than 15 pozoles from both professional and community chefs in the Denver area.

Made from hominy (a form of dried corn), pozole is a soup-like dish that typically includes chicken or pork, along with a spicy sauce and toppings like avocado, lime, cabbage, peppers and radishes. The festival takes place from 2 to 8 p.m. at 3950 W. Morrison Road. Each sample costs $3, or you can get a discount on 10 samples in advance. Get tickets and info at hechoenwestwood.com.

Pickup lines

Saturday. You’ve heard of Shakespeare in the park, but how about Shakespeare in the parking lot? The Denver Center for the Performing Arts has already kicked off its springtime community tour of its popular Shakespeare in the Parking Lot program. The second of six weekly shows will be on Saturday, April 13, at noon in Arvada’s Olde Town Square .

“These stripped-down productions are centered around a pickup truck ‘set’ that travels” to various schools and other locations around metro Denver, according to a press release, and the Denver Center recorded its 700th performance earlier in April. Today’s play is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which will be performed again on May 11 in the River North Arts District and on May 18 in Lafayette. On April 20 and May 4, the actors will do “Romeo and   Juliet” at two Denver locations. All shows are open to the public. For more information on dates and locations, go to denvercenter.org .

Red, white and you

Sunday. If you love Colorado-made wines, check out the fourth Colorado Wine Walk, which hosts a grand tasting event on April 14 in the Dairy Block alleyway at 1800 Wazee St. There will be 12 of Colorado’s urban and Western Slope wineries in attendance for both sampling and purchase, according to organizers at Blanchard Family Wines.

Tickets, which start at $50, include unlimited wine samples, a commemorative wine glass, discounts on wine purchases, and the ability to chat with winemakers and winery owners. There are two different sessions, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. Get info at coloradowinewalk.com .

Closing day

Sunday. “Are you tired of typical closing days focused on silly pond skims instead of KPIs and pivot tables? Well, good news! With our 360° approach to customer satisfaction, we’re going to parking-lot those ideas and take a 10,000-foot view … because our closing day is ALL BUSINESS.” That’s the tongue-in-cheek windup to Echo Mountain ski area’s last day of the 2023-24 ski and snowboard season on Sunday, April 14.

The ski resort, the closest one to Denver, is offering half off of lift tickets if you show up in business attire, along with food and drink specials and, yes, an actual CPA on hand to answer tax questions in advance of April 15 (tax day). Colorado is perhaps best known for the Rocky Mountains that stretch across the state and offer up hiking and biking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. But what most people don’t know about Colorado is that the state also has beautiful red rock formations set in the dry desert, ancient cliff dwellings, and alternative towns that dance to the beat of their own drums.

The one thing that binds everyone who lives in or visits Colorado is a love of nature and the outdoors — be it river rafting, climbing 14,000-foot peaks, or wildflower viewing. And as someone who grew up in the state (and lives here now), I’ve spent several decades exploring the vista-rich Centennial State. These parks, monuments, towns, and sites showcase the variety of experiences the state offers. Here are 20 of the best places to visit in Colorado.

Rattlesnake Canyon Arches

Utah’s Arches National Park has the world’s highest concentration of natural arches, but right across the border in Colorado is the world’s second-highest concentration. And in Colorado, you don’t have to pay a national park entry fee (or battle the crowds) to see them. Rattlesnake Canyon Arches boasts 35 natural arches tucked in a canyon on a 123,400-acre preserve.

Larimer Square

Colorado may be known for its natural beauty, but the draw of downtown Denver is impossible to overlook. Larimer Square was the city's first designated local historic district for good reason — the city block is perfectly picturesque with shops and eateries that round out the Colorado experience. The square is a short 10-minute walk from the heart of the city: Union Station.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

It doesn’t get more Colorado than watching a golden eagle soar above a steep gorge. The sighting is part of the experience at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado. The national park is marked by a deep, river-carved gorge with sheer walls. For the coolest view, check out the Painted Wall cliff that looks as if it was painted with giant stripes.

Colorado National Monument

When you think of the American West, chances are you imagine something like the Colorado National Monument , which sits high on the Colorado Plateau and includes natural wonders like sheer canyon walls, towering monoliths, herds of bighorn sheep, and soaring eagles. In this grand landscape, there is plenty to keep you busy — including the beautiful Rim Rock Drive, year-round camping, and hiking and biking.

Aspen is by no means a hidden gem, but it’s popular for a reason. The beautiful mountain town has four ski areas (that you can access with one lift ticket) and a surprising amount of culture for a town of around 7,000 people. And it wouldn’t be a trip to Aspen without a stop by the Maroon Bells , the most photographed mountains in North America.

Mesa Verde National Park

This national park in southwestern Colorado is considered to be one of the state’s most sacred places. It was once inhabited by the Ancestral Pueblo people who built their homes in the sandstone cliffs. That heritage (and architectural wonder) is protected within this park, which is also a World Heritage Site and an International Dark Sky Park.

Amache National Historic Site

One of the most significant moments in Colorado’s history is not known by many. The Amache National Historic Site , also called the Granada Relocation Center or Camp Amache, is where thousands of Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated during World War II. Today, the eastern Colorado site shares the stories of the more than 10,000 people who passed through the camp — the majority of whom were U.S. citizens.

Pagosa Springs

There are plenty of natural hot springs throughout the state (just check out the state’s hot spring loop ), but one of the best is found in Pagosa Springs, a small town that sits over the world’s deepest hot spring. I’d argue the best spot to soak is The Springs Resort & Spa , which has terraced tubs set along the river, but if you want to save a buck, you can also soak in the totally free “ hippy dip ” across the river.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is Colorado’s most visited national park. It is just over an hour’s drive from downtown Denver and is unique in that it spans the Continental Divide. In the fall, the Old Fall River Road and Trail Ridge Road are particularly colorful drives, while mountaineers come to summit Longs Peak, the park’s tallest mountain.

Remember when I said that Colorado was home to “alternative towns that dance to the beat of their own drum”? I was talking about Crestone, a tiny town of just under 150 people that is committed to sustainable living and spirituality. Throughout the town, you’ll find a variety of off-the-grid homes and spiritual centers and sites like the Crestone Mountain Zen Center and the Tashi Gomang Stupa .

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

Just west of Denver, you’ll spot giant red rocks that seem to shoot out from the earth. This rock structure was long ago harnessed to create a natural amphitheater that has become world renowned for its unique sound quality. In fact, playing at Red Rocks has become a goal performance for many big-name artists.

Glenwood Springs

When it comes to mountain towns with all-around appeal, it’s hard to top Glenwood Springs. The “larger” mountain town (just over 10,000 people), is set on the interstate making it easy to access from Denver (2.5 hours away). The town has three developed hot springs, a mountaintop adventure park that can only be accessed by gondola, and a river that provides opportunities for paddlers and fishers.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of those places that you might not expect to find in Colorado. The park protects a natural phenomenon: giant mounds of sand that were collected at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America and the mysterious “surge flow” of Medano Creek . 

Crested Butte

Like every other Colorado mountain town , Crested Butte has wonderful hiking and biking trails and great skiing, but what sets it apart is the abundance of wildflowers that earned it the nickname “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” There’s even an annual 10-day festival celebrating the blooms.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument

In the dry, red rock canyons of southwestern Colorado is this archaeological wonder. The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument encompasses a whopping 174,000 acres that contain clues to the daily lives of ancient Indigenous people, including more than 8,300 recorded villages, cliff dwellings, shrines, kivas, petroglyphs, and other historic sites. 

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is yet another Colorado hot spring and ski town, but unlike the others on this list, Steamboat has a unique American West feel. Here, cowboy hats are just as common as Chacos, and the landscape lends itself to people who like to get outside. There are two ski areas, geothermal hot springs, and a state park directly to the north. 

Denver Union Station

Many cities have a train station, but Denver has turned their transportation hub into the heart of the city. The 1914 Beaux-Arts train station , which is also a historic landmark, consists of 10 chef-owned restaurants and bars, a boutique hotel, and a handful of unique shops (and there are four bee hives on the roof). Once you’ve shopped and eaten your fair share, you can hop on the bus, light rail, or Amtrak to your next destination. 

The city of Durango is perched where the mountains meet the desert, providing a landscape that has a little of everything. There are hot springs, ski areas, mountain biking trails, and plenty of fun to be had on the Animas River that runs through town. In the summer, a top to-do is riding the 19th-century Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango to Silverton, Colorado over a mountain pass.  

Dinosaur National Monument

Like dinos? Colorado has you covered. At this national monument , which straddles the Colorado-Utah border and passes into both states, there’s endless proof that dinosaurs once roamed the Colorado landscape. The monument includes dinosaur remains that are embedded in the rocks, petroglyphs from early humans, and plenty of outdoorsy things to do including river rafting, hiking, and camping.

Boulder is a college town with easy access to Denver and the mountains. To the west of the city sit the Flatirons, rock formations lined with trails, while the downtown neighborhood of Pearl Street Mall has everything from art galleries to inventive eats and unique boutiques.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
• Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
• Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
• Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
• Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
• Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
• Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.

The solar eclipse is upon us.

As the day progresses and the 2024 celestial event crosses into Illinois , the Journal Star will provide coverage from the path of totality — where the effect is greatest — to the partial eclipse seen elsewhere in the state and the country.

Peoria Riverfront Museum has thousands in attendance for solar eclipse

As of 10 am there were already 1,700 people assembled in the Riverfront Museum's Sun Plaza preparing to view the eclipse, said Kara Cutting, the museum's creative director. By 12:40, Cutting had welcomed hundreds of people as they climbed the stairs onto the plaza.

"It's been very festive. Everyone is having a good time," she said.

With a warm sunny day, eclipse viewers in Peoria are likely going to have a better view than many who traveled to the path of totality.

Festivities underway at Saluki Stadium in Carbondale

Robert Dennis, a Southern Illinois University grad, was a post-production supervisor for the "Star Wars" movies. He was in Saluki Stadium on Monday running cameras for the eclipse show.

With clear skies overhead as of noon, a dance troupe is out on the football turf dancing to Aquarius' "Let the Sunshine In." The wind is picking up at Saluki Stadium, where a giant ball depicting the sun, tethered to the turf at the 50-yard-line, is attempting to gain first-down yardage.

Some eclipse glasses sold in Illinois are recalled

Double check your eclipse glasses before staring at the sun today. Some glasses sold in Illinois have been recalled due to ineffectiveness at protecting the eye from the sun.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging people to check their glasses and make sure they are not among those that have been recalled.

Recalled glasses were sold on Amazon as "Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS Approved 2024 – CE & ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing (6 Packs)."

Still need eclipse glasses? Here's where to look

The Peoria Public Library is giving away eclipse glasses for free and grocery stores like Walmart, Kroger and HyVee have the glasses for sale as does hardware retailers Menards and Lowe's.

Cracker Barrel restaurant is also selling eclipse glasses.

The Peoria Riverfront museum, Chillicothe Public Library and Fondulac District Library also carry eclipse glasses. At this point, you should try to call ahead before you make the drive anywhere.

NASA teams, 50,000 people in Carbondale for solar eclipse

CARBONDALE – SIU-Carbondale officials were joined by teams from NASA and Chicago's Adler Planetarium for a 7 a.m. news  conference Monday ahead of the eclipse.

They expect 200,000 to 300,000 people to flood the region today for viewing of the totality, with a projected 50,000 in Carbondale – roughly double the town's population.

Michelle Nichols, director of public observing at Adler Planetarium, will co-host an eclipse show in Saluki Stadium. 

"Thousands of people are here today to see this eclipse, feel the temperature drop, and feel the overall excitement and hear the reactions of everyone around them," she said. "This is a multi-sensory experience involving the sun, the moon, and you. 

"It involves one single action: Looking up."

NASA is sending up a pair of balloons and deploying some aircraft at high altitude to study the corona during totality.

What will the weather be for Monday's solar eclipse in Illinois?

Monday's weather forecast is a dose of great news for Illinoisans hoping to see the solar eclipse on Monday.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln, Ill. tweeted Monday that most of Illinois will have favorable viewing conditions, adding that only thin, high clouds are expected in the path of totality.

What to know about the eclipse

During a total  solar eclipse , the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the latter. The daytime darkness will last a few minutes within the path of totality — where the effect of the eclipse is greatest. Within the U.S., the eclipse path will stretch from Texas to Maine and includes, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, among others. Only certain parts of those states will be within the path of totality .

Other parts of those states and the rest of the country will experience a partial eclipse.

What time is the eclipse on Monday?

The  total eclipse enters the U.S.  just after 01:27 p.m. central time April 8 at a point in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to eclipse2024.org. The eclipse will end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. eastern time. Even if you're not in the path of totality, you may still experience the eclipse to a lesser degree.

When does the eclipse start in Illinois?

A partial phase of the eclipse will begin in southern Illinois just before 12:42 p.m. near East Cape Girardeau, where  totality will enter the state  after 1:58 p.m. and last about 4 minutes.
