5 to try - Falmouth boat trips
July 10 2015
Published within the category of Falmouth
Falmouth is the ultimate coastal base for day tripping by boat. Enjoy a leisurely day out on an organised trip with one of these wonderful local companies.
Leap aboard the st mawes ferry.
Enjoy this 20 minute scenic ride connecting the old world fishing harbour of St Mawes with Falmouth. Crossing the harbour 364 days a year, this trip saves passengers from what would be a 29 mile car journey. Once at your destination of St Mawes, we thoroughly recommend a Cornish afternoon tea in one of its many quirky eateries, followed by a meander around its harbour, shops and castle.
RELAX ON A RIVER TRIP WITH ENTERPRISE BOATS
This fleet sails regularly between the hub of Truro and Falmouth harbour along the banks of the unspoilt Fal River, stopping at Malpas and Trelissick along the way. Snacks, hot refreshments and toilets are available on board and there is also an informative commentary from the boat’s skipper. Four legged friends are welcome on leads!
HIRE A BOAT FROM CUSTOMS HOUSE QUAY
If you fancy a more solitary affair, just pop into town to start your adventure. Bob around the harbour and explore quiet creeks and secret beaches before indulging in a tasty picnic hamper which you can now hire from St Michaels (filled with a range of goodies, from £25 for two people, just call 01326 312707 .)
SPOT WILDLIFE WITH ORCA SEA SAFARIS
Get closer to Cornish wildlife on one of these unique tours - from dolphins, seals and whales to seabirds and basking sharks. The purpose-built Seaquest departs Falmouth each day and soaks up the spectacular sights of the Carrick Roads.
TRAVEL UP THE CREEKS OF THE HELFORD WITH FALMOUTH’S PLEASURE CRUISES
This proud Falmouth family business with many years of experience navigating the local waters. All of their cruises are onboard the MV Princessa and operate daily from the Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth. With a fully licensed bar, the Princessa is also available for private charter excursions for sunset cruises or floating celebrations.

Wonderful boat trip
What a glorious trip. We took the Helford trip on a mizzly afternoon and loved every minute of it. Informative commentary from a wonderful Cornishman who is obviously (and rightfully) proud of his heritage and also knows some fabulous pubs! We spent a lovely 2.5 hours learning plenty about the industry surrounding Falmouth Harbour and the ensuing coastline. All for an extremely reasonable price - some of the other boat trips on offer are prohibitively expensive for our family of three so thank you, FPC, for an affordable adventure.
Lovely trip down the Fal, the weather made it feel like we were in another country with all the beautiful coastline surrounding us! A good way to spend a couple of hours on a nice day in Falmouth.
Really enjoyed the Falmouth river cruise on 27th March. Great commentary and beautiful setting, we loved the fact that there was a toilet on board for our little girl. There was a bar/drinks too but we didn’t make use of that on this trip. Great value for money, our only regret is that we aren’t local so won’t get to do the Helford cruise anytime soon
Situated just off the High St, Falmouth, Just pass Boots, Chemist and Superdrug this great trip is ideal for relaxing and taking the the beautiful scenery of Falmouth and beyond. £12:50 Adult (Sept 2021 prices) and it takes approx 2 hours with the first sailing at 11am. Got my ticket from a lovely lady at the very first Kiosk on the pier and made my way to the MV Princess, Lady also came aboard as she is learning to be one of the crew on board. We took off and followed the Falmouth Bay and Docks and then took off to open waters , then on to Helford River, looking at the stunning scenery as are guide Captain giving us a running commentary of what to look at, From the stunning shorelines to the interesting vessels in port. Look out for one or two celebrity houses along the way as well. After a hour we came to Helford River then headed back to Falmouth. So relaxing and the waters was so calm, With Hot/Cold drinks abroad and toilets , This trip is a must if you just want to Chill Out! All the crew members were so kind, polite and as they were not many passengers i had plenty of seating room at the front on the boat. The MV Princess has seating upstairs as well.
Another opportunity to board the MV Princessa for a stunning cruise across Falmouth Bay into the Helford River. With the Captain engaging our attention with an interesting commentary during the cruise. Well stocked galley and a friendly Mate ensures a goodly amount of refreshment both liquid and snacks. Plenty of room and all seats offer excellent visibility. There is an enclosed cabin for those adverse to an abundance of sea air ! All in all can highly recommend this as an excellent good value way to enjoyably pass some hours bobbing about on the briny.
The pickup from St Mawes and the cruise provided a great trip, we thoroughly enjoyed the commentary and all of the crew were polite, friendly, witty and thus were an absolute pleasure to be with, adding to the scenery and relaxing cruises. We will definitely repeat this day!

'Love a boat trip '
We bought the 3 day pass and had four trips out to Truro, Trellisk and St Mawes. We thoroughly enjoyed the trips and the crew were such happy and informative with a great history and commentary on the way.
Took the boat to turo great weather going then got the train back takes the hassle of parking a great way to and from Falmouth and turo it's a must
Having enjoyed the trip from Falmouth harbour across Falmouth Bay and up the Helford River as far as Frenchman's Creek, on a previous occasion, my daughter and I decided to make the most of the good weather by taking this cruise on the MV Princessa. Having bought tickets and boarded the boat, we were surprised to find that there were only four other passengers, instead of the usual large number, and we feared that the trip might be cancelled. However, we were delighted when the boat left the quay on time. The captain kept us entertained with an informed and humorous commentary and we spent a most enjoyable couple of hours on the deck in the sun. There is also a cabin, from which you could still enjoy good views, which would provide shelter if the weather was less favourable.
Although it was a bit of a drizzly day we decided to go on a river trip to the Helford river. However on enquiring we were told that because of mist the trip was instead going up the Fal and was therefore a bit cheaper. We paid our £10 each and stepped on board. The boat has plenty of undercover seating and even a bar selling alcohol, soft drinks and tea and coffee for non- exorbitant prices. We braved the windy outdoors deck, wiped the rain off the wooden seats and spent a lovely 2 hours with a proper mug of tea (no polystyrene cups!) and an interesting and often amusing commentary from a proper Cornish skipper. Great value for 2 hours of gorgeous scenery, even in the rain. Recommended but just check about times and destinations as they sometimes have to change due to weather.
The weather was lovely so we made a quick decision to do this cruise, we arrived 30mins before she sailed, this was a good move as the top deck filled up quite quickly after that. We set sail to a commentary that at times was quite hard to listen to due to the talking going on around. Plenty of time to take photos, the refreshments on board were an added bonus with the added pleasure of negotiating steps on a moving boat with hot cups of liquid. I don't know if I would have been brave enough to do this if the sea had been a little rough. As I mentioned previously it was hard to heard the captain at times, this didn't matter the majority of the time but feel that it was important when he was informing us what to do in an emergency. I felt that maybe having somebody on the top deck physically speaking to us, especially as we had a lot of senior citizens on board may have been beneficial. Enjoyable none the less
This was a pleasant enough cruise to Frenchmans Creek but beware we had to kill three hours in Falmouth waiting for it. We booked the 11am sailing at the pier office a day in advance. On arrival, we were advised by the apologetic skipper that ‘the office’ had booked the Princessa for a charter instead. We, in common with others who had purchased tickets, were offered a transfer to a much smaller boat that was, unfortunately, impossible for my elderly mother to board safely; a wait until for the 2pm sailing; or our money back. As we had already made the journey to the pier, we chose to endure the unwanted three hour delay in the advertised sailing. The sea was also much ‘choppier’ that afternoon. The commentary and service on board was otherwise very good.

When you’re staying next to the third deepest natural harbour in the world (check out our webcam to see it in action), it would be a shame not to make the most of it with a soul-quenching boat trip! With Fal River right next door, Falmouth is a great base for some seriously bon voyage-worthy boat trips, from sightseeing exhibitions to a dinner with a difference. You can also trade wheels for water as you board the St Mawes Ferry for a day trip to the beautiful seaside village.
In fact, if you fancy creating a holiday itinerary that’s almost totally water-based, Falmouth is a great place to start. With a collection of great beaches , the National Maritime Museum and some pulse-raising watersports , there are plenty of things to do in Falmouth that make the most of its waterside locale - not to mention some superb places to eat with incredible views.
Ready to head out on the open waters? Here are the best boat trips in Falmouth to get your blood pumping and your hair windswept.
Enterprise Boats
What could be better than a visit to a beautiful Cornish garden? Arriving by boat! Take the river passage with Enterprise Boats to Trelissick as you enjoy the gently passing views of Fal River – it really is the best way to travel. You’ll pass historic castles , wooded valleys and even the famously pretty, waterside village of St Mawes .
Trelissick is a lovely riverside garden that’s great for family days out as well as solo strolls through the sub-tropical foliage. Pop into the café for a coffee and a piece of bogglingly good cake or simply spend your time in the gardens, which boast a catalogue of colours in the spring and summer months.
If you would like to get off and make the most of the many things to do in St Mawes , you can purchase a Fal Mussel Visitor Card , which will allow you to soak up the delights of the fishing village before catching a returning ferry back to Falmouth.
The best thing about this waterside adventure? You can bring the pooch, making it one of the many great things to do in Cornwall with your dog .
Falmouth Pleasure Cruises
The waterways around Falmouth really are spectacular, providing some of the best riverside views in Cornwall, and one of the best ways to enjoy these views is onboard the MV Princessa.
More of a floating bar than a boat, the MV Princessa is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need to make a voyage memorable, from a fully stocked bar to a comfortable lounge area. Once you’ve got a drink in your hand, sit back as Princessa ferries you around Falmouth Bay, the Helford River , Frenchmans Creek and, of course, the River Fal.
During your gently bobbing journey, you’ll get to see some simply stunning views alongside some fascinating remnants of local history. You might also glimpse some local wildlife so make sure to keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready should a curious critter appear.
You can board the MV Princessa as a coach passenger, but you can also hire her out in her entirety for private events. From weddings to birthday bashes, there’s no better place to celebrate than out on the water.
Blue River Table
There are boat trips, and then there are boat experiences and Blue Table River definitely falls into the second category. With four foodie cruises to choose from, you’ll quickly start to wonder why anyone would want to dine on land when the river is right there!
Start your day off the sailor’s way with breakfast aboard the beautiful Tethra, where you’ll dine on local teas and coffees alongside sharing platters full of all your favourite breakfast staples from locally smoked bacon to local jams and marmalades – not to mention a glass of Prosecco for good measure!
Usually, when you think of eating lunch on the road it’s a stressful affair as you trudge along the motorway looking for the next service station where you can grab a quick sandwich. Lunch on the Carrick Roads is anything but, with its idyllic pace and scenery and superb spread of locally sourced seafood.
And if lunch isn’t your jam, then hopping on deck for an afternoon tea cruise will certainly be your cup of tea. Plates full of fresh scones (jam-first or you may be tossed overboard), crab sandwiches and brownie bites will have you saying ‘oh buoy’ before the engine even starts.
When the dinner bell sounds, what better place to be than sailing up the River Fal as it starts to wind down for the night with a table in front of you laden with Mediterranean style dishes and a Cornish cheese board to finish.
AK Wildlife Cruises
You’re in for a whale of a time with AK Wildlife Cruises as you embark on a fact-filled adventure to see some of the incredible wildlife that thrives around Falmouth Bay. Captain Keith is a fountain of knowledge ensuring every adventurer will leave knowing more than they did about the incredible inhabitants of the Cornish coast .
Setting off from Falmouth Premier Marina, you’ll spend either three, four or seven hours searching for the local wildlife inhabitants. The animal sighting checklist includes a variety of exciting creatures such as seabirds, dolphins, seals and everybody’s favourite gentle giants, basking sharks, which can be spotted using their tell-tale fins moving gracefully through the water.
Setting out to sea is a great experience that’s made all the better by being prepared, so we always recommend packing something warm, something waterproof and something that can zoom in such as binoculars or a camera.
Falmouth Boat Hire
Ready to take the wheel yourself? With Falmouth Boat Hire, you can become your own captain as you set sail up one of the most beautiful rivers in the UK in one of their lovely self-drive cabin boats, which can take six people and the dogs!
For those looking for an introduction to boating, a one-hour trip will take you around 4 miles up the River Fal as you soak up the idyllic surrounds before returning to Falmouth where you can pop to one of the many great restaurants for a post-voyage feed.
If you want to slow things down even further, a three-hour trip will allow you to sail all the way up to Trelisick House, stopping off at the many secret coves along the way for an ultra-special picnic, which you can fill with all kinds of Cornish goodies from one of the many bakeries and delis in Falmouth.
Orca Sea Safaris
Ready to learn about this stunning stretch of South Cornwall ? Head out on the two-hour coastal explorer trip with Orca Sea Safaris to see and experience some of Falmouth’s most interesting and inspiring spots, from shipwrecks to smugglers’ tales. You might even see a dolphin or two!
If you’re after a shorter excursion, the one-hour bay discovery trip is a wonderful way to see Falmouth from a different perspective as you whizz around the bay and beyond, looking out for seals and whales as you go.
Both trips are a great way to learn about Falmouth’s rich history while enjoying the spectacular views on offer throughout the year. There really is no better way to experience everything this waterside town has to offer.

Cornwall is scenic England at its best, with superb seascapes, picturesque harbours, and countryside of green fields and hedgerows, quaint villages and low-slung granite farmhouses. More about Cornwall (Falmouth), England Points of Interest
As the name suggests, this tourist destination is located at the extreme western tip of the British mainland. Take in the view, see a theatre show, shop, and explore the village and amusement park.
Separated from the mainland by a causeway covered by sea at high water, this island community, complete with medieval church, castle and village, is a delightful place to visit.
Sheltered from the elements in a cliff's ravine, this charming Cornish fishing village of cottages is perched on a steep slope overlooking a tiny harbour with narrow, winding streets and alleys.
In the mid-19th century, St. Ives was home to a thriving fishing industry. Tate St Ives is a striking 3-story building that sits in the cliff face overlooking the beach, and houses modern and contemporary art by notable Cornwall artists. Enjoy the beach view from the restaurant.
This seaside community's natural harbour is a haven for yachts and mariners. Its estuary is one of the most breathtaking and unspoiled waterways of Britain's south coast.
Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lizard Peninsula is home to 15 of Britain's most rare plants, as the mild climate nurtures subtropical vegetation and a year-round color.
A short ferry ride from Falmouth, this affluent harbor village has two beaches and a variety of charming cafes, restaurants and shops, as well as a 16th-century castle built by Henry XIII.
