National Rail Guide

In Great Britain each Train Operating Company provides its own booking service for journeys by its trains, but many of their websites also sell tickets for nationwide journeys, regardless of which company operates the trains on the routes you wish to travel by.

The National Rail website is plugged into all of the train operator's booking services, so when more than one of these companies offers tickets for a route, it in effect offers a price comparison service. It isn't a ticket agent, so you will be connected to the website of your choice in order to make a booking.

Journey Features

Good to know.

Arriving in Manchester

If you'll be happy to walk into the city centre, leave these trains at Oxford Road station .

It's the first station in the city that these trains will call at and exiting Oxford Road station will take under a minute; these trains will arrive on a platform (track) which is adjacent to the main station building.

In contrast, at Piccadilly station, these trains use a part of the station which is at the opposite end of the building to its main exit. So when walking to the city centre, alighting at Oxford Road can save time and it is more straightforward.

Though if you will be taking a tram on to a destination outside the city centre; the tram routes from Piccadilly station go to Etihad Campus and Media City. Though Oxford Road station is not served by trams.

Tickets marked with Oxford Road as a destination will be valid to Piccadilly station.

Journey description:

For the majority of this journey the train will travel through a majestic landscape; all of the videos were taken from a train travelling in the opposite direction.

South of Carstairs the railway follows a route through the beautiful Southern Uplands . <iframesrc=" https://www.youtube.com/embed/ODL--ybt0Mo " title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

South of here and north of Lockerbie station, the views as the railway climbs and then descends over Beattock summit, are particularly special, particularly on the left when heading south.

Between Carlisle and Lancaster the railway takes a route between The Lake District to the east and the Pennines to the west; so there are great views to be enjoyed from both sides of the train towards distant mountains.

Though initially south of Penrith the best views are over on the right, facing towards The Lake District.

Approximately 10 minutes north of Oxenholme comes one of the highlights of the journey when the railway travels through the Lune Gorge - though here the best views are from the left (when facing the direction of travel).

A beautiful landmark to look out for on the left, just after the train enters the gorge, is the spectacular sight of Low Gill Viaduct, on a now abandoned railway.

Then to the south of Oxenholme the best of the views remain on the left.

Around five minutes north of Lancaster, the West Coast Main Line, briefly lives up to its name with a fleeting glimpse of Morecambe Bay, the only sea view on the journey.

Heading south from Carstairs

Book Early and Save: Yes

Online Bookings Usually Open: from up to 24 weeks ahead of the travel date (usually) as TransPennnine Express (TPE) places its ticket on sale sooner than other UK train operating companies.

Saving money:

If you want to travel at the cheapest possible price, look for the 'Advance tickets', though the four key things worth knowing about booking and using 'Advance' tickets for travel by TPE services are: (1) The ticket(s) will be valid for the specific departure you select when making a booking. (2) The ticket(s) cannot either be refunded, if you subsequently change your plans or miss the train due to any circumstances not attributable to the train operator. (3) They can be exchanged to another departure on this route prior to the departure you have booked - but the price difference with the new ticket will need to be paid (the price will likely have risen since your original booking will need to be paid. (4) TPE doesn't take Advance tickets off sale until 15 mins prior to departure.

TPE offers a group deal for when groups of 3 - 9 adults are travelling together and Advance tickets are booked online - make sure you see the 'G' symbol which indicates that the discount has been applied. You can save 33% of the total costs of the tickets and no Railcard is required.

The potential to save by splitting tickets on Trainline

It can be worth looking up this journey on Trainline .

It can be possible to save money by using split ticketing, with the booking process being no more complicated than booking conventional tickets - find out more .

Reservations:

All types of ticket booked at least 15 minutes ahead of travel for TPE trains have complimentary seat reservation.

If you book and Advance ticket(s) you have to travel on the train shown on the reservation, which will be the specific departure you selected when making a booking. Though on boarding, you won't have to occupy the seat(s) you have been assigned for your ticket to be valid.

If you book Anytime or Off-Peak tickets you will be provided with a reservation(s) on the departure you selected when making a booking, but are able to transfer the reservation to any other valid departure on your travel date. You can do this by contacting the TPE social media team, or at a station ticket desk.

What is unusual about travelling with TPE is that these reservations can be arranged up to around 15 minutes prior to departure, which is a much shorter time limit than the norm.

Travelling on Saturday-Sunday

Tickets are usually available 12 weeks ahead of the travel date, but maintenance work on the route is periodically undertaken at weekends and if it is scheduled on your travel date, it can affect when tickets will be released for sale.

If you're looking up a journey less than 12 weeks ahead and Advance tickets aren't available, it can be a good indication that works will be impacting on your travel date. It can be worth checking this on the National Rail website - enter TransPennine Express as the operator.

Booking at the station

As TPE doesn't take Advance tickets off sale until 15 mins prior to departure, if you will be booking walk-up tickets at the station try to avoid booking at the last minute.

Cars at a standstill on a motorway

Easter travel delays forecast for UK due to poor weather and rail disruption

Line closures and strikes coinciding with school holidays and turbulent weather are expected to hit travel plans

A long Good Friday looms for many drivers and rail passengers who are heading off for a UK getaway, as the Easter weekend collides with the start of school holidays, engineering works and turbulent weather.

With more than 14 million leisure trips planned by drivers over the coming days, motorists have been warned to expect delays on many routes. Additional cars could be forced on to the roads because of major railway line closures, with strikes hampering possible return train journeys next week.

According to the RAC, some car journeys could take twice as long as normal as many schools are breaking up at the start of the bank holiday weekend this year, leading to an increase in getaway traffic.

Meanwhile, all trains in and out of London Euston on the west coast mainline to cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow will be cancelled from Friday to Monday, with passengers wishing to travel diverted via rail replacement buses to Milton Keynes.

Getaway hell was expected to kick off on Thursday afternoon, with the biggest potential for gridlock coming from the south-east after 2pm with many schools closing at lunchtime.

With normal commuter journeys contributing to the traffic, the RAC and transport analysts Inrix forecast peak jams between 4pm and 5pm on the western flank of the M25 motorway between the M1 north and the M23 for Gatwick, including the turnoffs for the west and south-west. A usual one-hour drive on that stretch of the London orbital motorway is expected to take 2 hours 10 minutes or more, they predict.

Most long car journeys are expected to be made on Good Friday, with the lengthiest delays likely between 11am and 3pm. Two popular routes for holidaymakers – the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton and M3 between the M25 and the south coast – could take twice as long as usual.

One curveball is the British bank holiday weather , with changeable sun and rain either luring or deterring more in the coming days. The worst was forecast by the Met Office for Thursday afternoon, including strong winds and heavy rain at times, with a yellow warning for wind across the south of England .

The RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “If you do need to travel between the busiest hours of 2pm and 7pm, keep speeds appropriate to the conditions and leave plenty of extra stopping distance.”

She said anyone who could delay leaving until later on Thursday or set off as early as possible on Good Friday was likely to have a better journey, but lengthy queues could be expected.

Network Rail meanwhile has advised train passengers to check their journey details with £90m worth of engineering works scheduled to land awkwardly on the getaway plans of anyone fleeing London for the north in the coming days.

As well as the west coast mainline closure south of Milton Keynes, there will be disruption and closures around Glasgow and Huddersfield.

Network Rail’s network strategy director, Lawrence Bowman, said: “There’s never a good time to do the work we need to do but the four days of the bank holiday, when fewer people are travelling, give us the opportunity to do major work we couldn’t do in normal weekend.”

Rolling 24-hour rail strikes next week from 5 to 8 April by drivers in the Aslef union will halt most long-distance trains in Britain next Friday or Saturday, further hampering potential train holidays. The strikes affect different companies on different days but firms affected include Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry on 5 April and GWR, LNER, Northern and TransPennine on 6 April.

Tourist board VisitEngland said around 11 million people in the UK are nonetheless planning an overnight Easter trip, generating an estimated £3.2bn boost to the economy.

Two million of us are, however, not taking that chance, according to travel association Abta, heading overseas instead. The somewhat balmier Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Turkey are the most popular destinations for foreign travel.

The Port of Dover has warned holidaymakers they may face delays due to tighter French border security after the Moscow concert attack, including controls in Dover before passengers board cross-Channel ferries. About 20,000 cars are expected to travel through the port this weekend.

Frustrated train passengers face delays and disruption after London Euston signal failure

The affected west coast main line is one of the most important railway routes in the uk, connecting london and glasgow to other major cities including liverpool, birmingham and manchester..

Tuesday 2 April 2024 19:33, UK

A signal failure at London Euston has left passengers travelling on the West Coast Main Line stranded on its trains.

Avanti West Coast reported the fault earlier on Tuesday, adding some lines were blocked and that it could cause delays and cancellations.

The West Coast Main Line is one of the most important railway routes in the UK, connecting London and Glasgow to other major cities including Liverpool , Birmingham and Manchester .

Many trains travelling from London to destinations further north were facing severe delays on Tuesday evening, with one service to Manchester Piccadilly behind by 152 minutes.

Some trains travelling southbound were also delayed, would not stop at certain stations, terminated early or were fully cancelled due to the failure.

Services operated by London Overground and London Northwestern Railway were also affected.

Network Rail apologised for the incident and said it had "identified the signalling issue" preventing Euston from using some platforms.

It added: "It means we can open more that are not impacted. We'll be working with our train operators to gradually increase the number of trains as we reopen them."

Explaining the nature of the fault, a Network Rail spokesperson said: "Our signalling system is designed to put signals to red if it detects a problem, a kind of safety 'fail-safe', and has done so on some of the tracks approaching the station this afternoon.

"We're working with operators to run trains on the lines and platforms that are working as normal, but there are delays and cancellations as a result."

They advised passengers to check with operators before travelling to and from Euston.

Avanti offered concessions to passengers following the inconvenience, including lifting advance and off-peak ticket restrictions for the day across the network.

It said passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more at their destination station would be entitled to its "Delay Repay" scheme, provided they claim within 28 days from the date of travel.

One affected passenger, Sarah O'Connell, who was travelling to Llandudno Junction in Wales reported on X being stuck at Preston for more than 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, Paul Carroll said he had been "stuck on a train for two hours not moving".

One passenger, concerned about losing his reserved seat, posted on X and Avanti responded: "Trains are expected to be busier than usual. I would suggest grabbing any available seat for your journey today."

The disruption comes after Euston did not operate long-distance services between Good Friday and Easter Monday for engineering work, which included renewing the track between the station and Milton Keynes.

Passengers are facing hours of disruption

Travellers heading between Manchester and London are facing major disruption. All lines at London Euston are blocked today (April 2) with passengers stuck on trains for hours.

National Rail is warning that services are likely to be disrupted, with a number of trains delayed. It means all Avanti West Coast services heading between Greater Manchester and the capital are affected.

Avanti West Coast issued an alert to passengers which stated: “Trains to and from London Euston may be cancelled or delayed due to a fault with the signalling system affecting multiple platforms at the station.”

In an update just after 3pm, a National Rail spokesperson said: "We’re so sorry for the disruption at Euston, and we’re doing everything we can to fix it. Our signalling system is designed to put signals to red if it detects a problem, a kind of safety ‘fail-safe’, and has done so on some of the tracks approaching the station this afternoon.

“We’re working with operators to run trains on the lines and platforms that are working as normal, but there are delays and cancellations as a result. We advise passengers to check with their operator before they travel to or from Euston this afternoon while we work to find and fix the problem.”

National Rail says Avanti West Coast tickets are now being accepted on some TransPennine Express, LNER and Chiltern Railways services so passengers can find alternative routes between London and Greater Manchester.

There will be fewer southbound services operating from Manchester Piccadilly today.

Passengers stranded on stationary trains for TWO hours

Train passengers travelling on the West Coast Main Line are suffering severe disruption because of a signalling fault at London’s Euston station.

Some of those affected reported being stranded on stationary trains for at least two hours.

Network Rail apologised for the incident and said its engineers are “working to fix the problem as soon as possible”.

The West Coast Main Line runs between Euston and Glasgow with branches to major cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Avanti West Coast issued an alert to passengers which stated: “Trains to and from London Euston may be cancelled or delayed due to a fault with the signalling system affecting multiple platforms at the station.”

Services operated by London Overground and London Northwestern Railway are also affected.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We’re so sorry for the disruption at Euston, and we’re doing everything we can to fix it.

“Our signalling system is designed to put signals to red if it detects a problem, a kind of safety ‘fail-safe’, and has done so on some of the tracks approaching the station this afternoon.

“We’re working with operators to run trains on the lines and platforms that are working as normal, but there are delays and cancellations as a result.

“We advise passengers to check with their operator before they travel to or from Euston this afternoon while we work to find and fix the problem.”

One affected passenger, Paul Carroll, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he has been “stuck on a train for two hours not moving”.

Another passenger reported being “stuck on a train at Stockport for two hours”.

The disruption comes after Euston was closed for long-distance services between Good Friday and Easter Monday for engineering work, which included renewing the track between the station and Milton Keynes.

Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Birmingham New Street / Chester / Holyhead / Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Blackpool North / Glasgow Central / Edinburgh.

Manchester United’s Easter travel chaos sparks fury over Brentford kick-off change

F urious Manchester United supporters have slammed the controversial scheduling of Saturday’s game at Brentford as they face the prospect of travel mayhem this weekend.

Erik ten Hag’s side are due to kick off at 8pm against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It is the fourth time this season United have had a game moved to 8pm on a Saturday – the most of any team in the Premier League – and all of those fixtures have been away from home, with the Brentford trip due to follow visits to Burnley, Sheffield United and Newcastle.

The match is due to start two minutes before the last scheduled service leaves London St Pancras International for Manchester Piccadilly and no trains will run to and from London Euston over the Easter weekend while Network Rail carry out engineering works. It means there will be no direct trains to Manchester on Sunday.

Supporters relying on trains face the threat of being stuck in London until Monday owing to the Easter shutdown and incurring substantial hotel and living expenses.

Others preparing to make the 410-mile round trip by road are unlikely to be home until the early hours on Sunday with the game likely to finish around 10pm barring any delays to kick-off.

United have been allocated 1,725 tickets for the game, including 14 pairs for wheelchair users, and the scheduling has been condemned by angry fans who have accused the broadcasters and authorities of treating them with disdain .

A spokesperson for the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust told Telegraph Sport: “Sadly match-going supporters are all too used to the fact that we seem to be the last people considered when kick-off times are determined.

“For the fourth time this season, United are away from home at 8pm on a Saturday which just goes to show the blatant disregard the TV companies and football authorities have for match-going fans.

“During Covid they said that football without fans is nothing – it’s time for the football authorities to show they meant it.”

A survey of over 17,000 season ticket holders and members this month by The 1958, another United fans’ group, found that almost 95 per cent of supporters did not feel their voice was being heard or that they were receiving the right level of representation.

“The recent fixture changes for Brentford and Chelsea are just further evidence of the disdain shown for travelling match going fans in search of greed,” the 1958 said in a statement.

“Our recent survey results support this with over 17,000 match-going Reds taking part. It’s also a condemning indictment of the lack of real representation fans have. This will change and needs to change.”

Saturday’s controversial kick-off time could present even more headaches for the disabled supporters planning to attend the game. Chas Banks, secretary of the Manchester United Disabled Supporters’ Association, claimed it was the latest example of the authorities “screwing” over fans.

‘It feels like they are doing damnedest to stop disabled fans from watching’

“I don’t travel to away games anymore,” Banks told Telegraph Sport. “After years watching United home and away, it all became too much as the years passed – I’m in my 70s now and a disabled wheelchair user – and the football authorities clearly didn’t give a flying one about the problems it causes to fans when they schedule kick-offs at crazy times.

“They sit safe in the knowledge that whatever bonkers changes they made to the fixture list, the United away supporters would find a way to get there somehow.

“The scheduled kick-off changes seem even crazier if, like me, it takes three hours to get from your bed to actually leaving the house to begin your journey. As time has passed it really did start to feel like they were doing their absolute damnedest to stop me and other disabled United fans from watching my club playing away from home.”

Banks said the 8pm kick-off against Brentford would hit fans even harder given there are no trains running.

“It’s just become the norm now for the TV companies to do whatever they want,” he said. “If they want Newcastle to play away at Fulham with a 12.30pm kick-off, they’ll do it.

“No one stops to think for a minute about the impact the changes make on the fans. It wouldn’t be as bad if the railways worked but they are part of the problem, not the solution.

“Us older fans keep waiting for the bubble to burst, but I’m struggling to see any sign of that happening and as long as the fans keep turning up, the authorities will keep screwing them.”

The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) are thought to fear that such a situation will continue to persist in the future.

The FSA have successfully campaigned in the past on issues around away ticket prices and safe standing.

But it has proven harder to get a critical mass of supporters behind the problem of kick-off times given it does not affect all away fans all the time.

It is understood the FSA are campaigning to get travel costs reimbursed for away fans who have booked travel only for a game to be moved for a second time at short notice.

Move to end tragedy chanting

Meanwhile, the United and Liverpool Foundations have joined forces to deliver an education programme aimed at ending the tragedy chanting that has marred fixtures between the sides.

Two United fans were arrested in connection with tragedy chanting during the 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool at Old Trafford this month.

With the teams due to meet again in the Premier League at Anfield on April 7, the two foundations invited schoolchildren from Manchester and Liverpool to Lord Derby School in Huyton for an afternoon learning about the impact the Hillsborough and Munich disasters have had on the two clubs, their fans and the cities.

Wes Brown and Phil Thompson, the former United and Liverpool players respectively, joined the session and spoke with students. The two foundations are developing a programme in partnership with the Premier League and plan to make it an annual part of their engagement.

At the same time, both clubs remain fully committed to stamping out such behaviour in stadiums and online.
