General Coach in Full Production of its New Citation Reward Travel Trailers

General Coach Canada prides itself on being unique. A leading manufacturer of park model trailers, mobile homes, rental cabins and specialty trailers, including entertainment trailers used worldwide, General Coach has been rolling off the production line its latest design, the Citation Reward, a slick, modern and high-end travel trailer for 2020 and beyond.

The Reward takes inspiration from the Award travel trailer of the 1980s and ‘90s and is available in three elegant models (25’, 28’ and 31’) and three colours: red, dark blue and grey, with four interior colour schemes. It was constructed for everyone from retirees seeking getaways in an RV with easy handling and style, to small families wanting minimal RV maintenance and Millennials in search of a contemporary, stand-out option. The 25’ has two twin beds while the larger two models have queen beds with a fold-down dinette in the 31’ trailer.

Says Roger Faulkner, company president: “It’s for the ‘Made in Canada’ market and will be an alternative to the Airstream,” adding that there is even an emblem of the maple leaf embedded in the trailer.

The “condo on wheels” as he describes it has all the bells and whistles that discerning RV enthusiasts expect, including beautiful modern-day interiors and components and appliances of the highest quality. The Reward is engineered for durability, ease of use and long-term towing. Its sleek, aerodynamic look is also super efficient, having been made so slipstreams go around the side and top of the unit, reducing drag and enabling high efficiency towing. Its molded front cap with tinted windshield – harking back to the Award – has been upgraded to automotive standards and promises to be leak-free.

The manufacturer is currently recruiting dealers across the country for the Citation Reward. The goal is to have about four to five dealers across Canada, starting in Quebec and Ontario and branching out. “We need the right dealers,” Faulkner stresses. “We are looking for quality dealers who want to represent a quality Canadian-produced trailer which will be like no other in the marketplace.”

General Coach Canada, based in Hensall, Ontario, just east of Lake Huron, was established in 1950. The Faulkner name took ownership in 2010 and currently employs 200 staff, of which around 165 are hourly workers; Roger’s son Chris is company VP and daughter Heather is Head Buyer. General Coach added a new building in 2018, bringing its manufacturing lines to three, totalling 140,000 sq. ft.

Roger Faulkner has seen it all in the RV business over the years but says of COVID-related RV sales that “he’s never seen the activity we’ve seen today”, adding that General Coach was humming during the shutdown as it was considered an ‘essential business’, building trailers for the construction industry, mobile office trailers and portable washroom and shower units.

A visionary in Canada’s RV leisure and lifestyle industry since ‘68, Faulkner believes that the RV business will skyrocket. As for General Coach itself: “The reason for our success is because we are always looking for that empty room. It makes no sense to enter a room which is full. We, being a Canadian Manufacturer, must produce products which no one else is interested in. I am happy to say that no one is building what we’re building. We have survived because we’re different.”

Introducing the new Citation Reward from General Coach! Angelina and Brad no longer need their trailer. This thing has been so much fun we are really reluctant to let it go, but we’re moving out of the country so it has to go. It’s a classic, with a stylish aerodynamic shape. As is always the way, I just get everything repaired or replaced and then decide to move on. New or recently replaced: Queen size bed – cleverly configured as king size – I’ll explain later. Air conditioner – with unique cold air shower. Refrigerator Microwave Water heater Awning Flooring Tires Wheel bearings Marine deep cycle 12v battery Anti sway bar 3 Cameras (rear and sides) Portable waste-water tank. Repaired: Walls Sub floor The tour: Through the door we enter the front living room with two comfy chairs. There was a bed settee in here originally. Moving aft, passing the new fridge freezer we pass through the kitchen area with a microwave, double sink, and plenty of cupboards and work surfaces. Above this area is the powerful new air conditioner with the unique cold air shower feature. To the right is the bathroom with another cupboard, a toilet, sink and bath with shower above. In the rear section of the trailer is a queen size bed which is cleverly configured to give the same space as a king size. Originally there were twin beds in here, but we like to be friendly. More cupboards above the bed, and plenty of storage underneath. Outside there are more storage lockers containing all the accessories needed for a comfortable trip. Including water hoses, electrical connections (30Aand 15A), and sewage connections. There’s also a handy wheeled, portable waste-water tank to enable emptying the main tank for extended stays. I’ll include the trailer hitch with anti sway bar and stabilizers. There are three cameras fitted at the rear and sides and an lcd screen for the tow vehicle to help reversing and give a view of the road when travelling. Black, grey and drinking water tanks are underneath. There’s a new 12v deep cycle battery, which powers the lights and a water pump. If I could keep it I’d shower it with more love and affection, but it’s basically a very sound well-maintained trailer with lots of character. These Award trailers were made in Canada in 1993 and were well ahead of their time. There’s a bit of a cult following and a Yahoo user group (of course). Weighing in at a dry weight of 3830lbs it can easily be towed by most SUVs and trucks. I use a Kia Sorrento, which easily pulls it along. 9. Forest River Alpha Wolf

The lightweight Alpha Wolf trailer from Forest River's Cherokee line was named "Best in Show" by RV News in 2018. According to the Forest River site, the Cherokee Alpha Wolf "offers the best mix of floor plan diversity and top-shelf amenities while at the same time creating a tougher, lighter, better insulated shell." The interiors of this travel trailer look beautiful and modern while providing areas to cook, relax, and dine. Alpha offers multiple packages to personalize your trailer experience, including the Juice Package for all your solar needs.

10. Grand Design Reflection

If you're looking for a towable luxury RV with great value, the Reflection by Grand Design might be right for you. This trailer offers a beautifully designed kitchen, a spacious shower with a glass door, and more. Looking for a spacious, lightweight, off-road trailer? Then look no further than the Opus OP 15. Alto's Series F2414 travel trailer is designed to make hitch traveling with an electric vehicle easier than ever before. It sleeps five comfortably, six with the purchase of an additional electric bed. The interior design takes some inspiration from European trailers while maintaining an all-American flair. If you're looking to travel in something high-tech that will undoubtedly turn heads, look no further than Polydrop's P17A1 trailer. This California-made vehicle is specifically engineered to be the most aerodynamic travel trailer on the market. Its unique design and lightweight frame lend it to unlimited possibilities. The P17A's minimalist design comes fully insulated with built-in solar panels, storage, built-in speakers, a kitchenette, an awning, a control panel (for LEDs, air conditioning, chargers, and more), and a full-size mattress. This trailer was made to work hand-in-hand with electric vehicles, with its design specifically created to use less electricity, allowing for more travel and less charging time. Though one of the smaller trailers on this list, the P17A1 is sure to impress even the most traditional trailer travelers.

At the end of each calendar year, we will send you gifts for being a member of the tier you earned. Tier Level Requirements & Perks

Your Tier Level is based on the accumulated Reward Dollars for the calendar year. As you earn Reward Dollars throughout the year, you will immediately be moved when you reach the requirements of each specific Tier. The following year, you will earn Reward Dollars at the same Tier Level and must meet the same requirements to stay in the tier the year after. Example How Tier Levels Work

• You earn 500 Reward Dollars by July 1, 2023. You are immediately moved to the Gold Tier status and finish the calendar year in the Gold Tier.
• You will start 2024 as a Gold Tier member and have the opportunity to move up to Platinum if you meet the requirements during 2024.
• You must earn 500 Reward Dollars (Gold Tier requirement) again during the 2024 calendar year to begin 2025 as a Gold Tier Member.
• If you only earn 300 Reward Dollars in 2024, you will begin 2025 as a Silver Tier Member.
• By July of 2025, you have earned 500 Reward Dollars for the year. You would then get moved up to the Gold Tier status and all activities completed for the remainder of the year would earn Reward Dollars at the Gold Tier rate.

After more than 50 years as Canada’s #1 RV enthusiast magazine, we have found that once in a generation, a product is created that embodies elements of design and functionality that sets it apart from virtually everything else in the category.

I have had the pleasure of road testing two such products – the ABI Award travel trailers, manufactured by ABI Leisure Products in Dunnville, Ontario from 1985 – 1996, with a design inspired by the ABI Caravans of England. The company was reorganized as Award Recreational Vehicles from 1998 – 2005, and parts were available from Diels Distribution in Dunnville, Ontario, until just a few years ago. The Award trailers were unique, and very popular among RV enthusiasts throughout North America, with high quality construction, excellent aerodynamics, and superb towing characteristics. More than 5,000 Award travel trailers were sold throughout North America and vintage Award trailers are still seen on the roads and in campgrounds, a testament to the durability of construction and the longevity of the design.

The second landmark travel trailer, the new Citation Reward by General Coach Canada , is, in several ways, a tribute to the Award design.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Roger Faulkner, President of General Coach Canada, to spend a day towing the new Citation Reward 25-foot travel trailer.

We coordinated our road test with Andy Thomson, of Can-Am RV Centre in London, Ontario, our “Hitch Hints” expert, and the first RV dealer to carry the new Reward trailers.

It is important to note that while the resemblance between the original ABI Award travel trailers and the new Citation Reward trailers seems quite apparent, the Citation Reward models are built with the latest in top quality materials and components, by a company that has earned the highest level of customer confidence for decades of excellence in the manufacturing of RVs, park models, mobile homes, and commercial as well as theatrical trailers.

Roger Faulkner is one of the leading personalities in the Canadian RV industry, with a long history in the business and a track record of outstanding service to the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CRVA) and the RV community at large. Roger has served on every major RV industry board, and he was inducted into the RV Hall of Fame in 2018 acknowledging his lifetime achievements in the RV builder’s category. Roger has served on the Canadian Standards Association Z241 technical committee since 1990 – the governing body that sets the construction codes and safety standards for every RV sold in Canada.

Roger was the moving force behind the Leisure Lifestyle Marketing Group , which evolved into Go RVing Canada – the industry association that brings all levels of the Canadian RV and camping sectors together to enhance the outdoor experience for everyone who enjoys the RV camping lifestyle, and he has served on the executive committee of the Canadian Camping and RV Council since its inception.

Inside the new General Coach Citation Reward

The 21 st century Citation Reward travel trailers are manufactured in Hensall, Ontario, with many of the components and materials sourced from suppliers in the south-central Ontario region.

The euro inspired Citation Reward travel trailers are produced in three sizes: 25-foot, 28-foot, and 31-foot models.

This exciting new trailer line is distinctly different from the mass-produced travel trailers that you might be familiar with – and General Coach Canada is certainly no stranger to the travel trailer industry – the company began building trailers in 1950, and produced Citation models until 2008, when the recession saw the company shift to put their emphasis on the very popular General Coach park model units.

The company returned to the travel trailer sector when they built a new factory in 2018 for their theatrical and film industry trailers, and this provided the manufacturing facilities to build the Reward travel trailers.

The Citation Reward travel trailers fit a niche market within the travel trailer sector – designed to be more aerodynamic and easier to tow than the majority of travel trailers – and built to provide many years of RV touring enjoyment, the Canadian made quality of this line is distinctively different from the typical North American travel trailer.

At RV Lifestyle Magazine , we have a sister publication, Power Boating Canada Magazine , that has a custom-built ABI Award trailer that we use as a boating event support vehicle. I was very curious to see the differences between the ABI Award design and construction, and the new Citation Reward.

While the original Award design concept had many excellent characteristics, it was not without its problems. The Citation Reward design addresses and resolves all of these elements to create a more refined, higher quality product.

Among the design changes, the Reward trailers utilize different construction – among the key aspects that have been completely redesigned, are the walls – the Reward features a one-piece seamless fibreglass wall that is a vacuum-bonded two-inch construction produced by a supplier in Quebec, and the roof – the Award trailer used many pieces in the roof structure to achieve the vaulted configuration – the Reward achieves the aerodynamic shape by utilizing an aluminum cage structure. There are no materials to decay or require maintenance.

The exterior of the Reward trailers features a two-tone exterior high gloss finish, and this high gloss finish is also used for the interior wall surfaces – a first in the RV industry. The walls are built with Azdel backing, which is a man-made product that is impervious to insect damage, it won’t wick, and the wall will never delaminate, unlike the luan and plywood materials commonly found in RV wall construction. The Challenger® brand entrance door has friction hinges and a very sturdy screen door. The entrance lock is activated by a digital keypad – a very convenient feature.

Another major improvement that we found in the Citation Reward design is the use of a dark tinted contoured front window that is sourced from the automotive industry and installed the same way your car windshield is fitted to the vehicle. This eliminates the leakage problems that were characteristic of the Award design. The custom molded fibreglass front and rear caps of the Reward trailers overlap the roof structure, making it highly unlikely that the trailer will experience roof leaks.

We could go on and on about the fit and finish, the materials used inside and outside the Citation Reward travel trailers, and the overall excellence of the design, but let’s summarize – the Citation Reward travel trailers are high-end units that exceed the quality and roadability of the typical travel trailer models available in the North American market… you could think of the line as an affordable alternative that approaches the level of an Airstream – although Roger is very careful to emphasize that the Airstream line is “an island unto itself”, but the Citation Reward is in a new category, between the Airstream and the conventional travel trailer designs.

Construction

The Citation Reward travel trailers are built on a 7” Z-channel huck bolt chassis and frame and feature an enclosed underbelly with corrugated plastic protective layer, with commercial grade epoxy painted undercarriage. Inside, the floor is vacuum bonded and insulated, with a plywood subfloor and high-quality vinyl floor covering.

In the Galley

The galley includes an induction two-burner cooktop, and for quick meals, the convection microwave saves time and effort. You will enjoy the Furrion® 8 cubic-foot Arctic refrigerator/freezer.

Lots of headroom, easy access to overhead cabinets…

With its unique roofline, you might expect the Reward trailer interior to be short on headroom – but that is not the case – indeed, the trailer is built with a low-profile design – the floor is actually closer to the ground than most travel trailers, producing a very stable ride. The vaulted ceiling has an arched effect that measures 6’4” at the apex, and this headroom continues throughout the length of the interior. The headroom is actually 2 inches more than the Award trailer. For tall campers, the Reward has an Olympia® white sponge headliner and front-end wall.

On the Road

The Citation Reward trailer is very aerodynamic and has a low centre of gravity for excellent handling. There are many features that set this trailer apart from almost every other unit on the road – for example, we really like the Furrion® rear vision camera that is built into the rear cap – this would be an extra-cost option on most trailer brands.

We towed the Reward 25’ travel trailer with a Tesla Model S – and the touring experience was simply outstanding. With a very low centre of gravity, the sleek electric sports sedan brings plenty of power, low-end torque, and a supremely confident towing performance. It is, without question, one of the most capable tow vehicles we have tested in more than 50 years on the RV roads to adventure.

Andy hitched the Tesla Model S to the Reward trailer with a customized Eaz-Lift class III equalizing hitch, with 750 lb. bars and a pair of Husky dual brake pad friction sway control arms. In the Campground

When you arrive at the campsite, it is a very simple process to lower the four manual stabilizer jacks. The powered hitch jack is a real convenience, and there is a courtesy light to help you hook up or unhitch the trailer after dark. Many RVers use a cordless drill and a suitable socket to power their manual stabilizers – we have found this to be an excellent alternative to using person-power to extend or retract the stabilizers.

Your campsite comfort is assured because on the roof, there is a 200W – 12V solar package with interior monitor, and a Dometic® Penguin 15,000 BTU air conditioner. The ZipDee® patio awning features Sunbrella® fabric for long life. While many trailers are built with large and bulky entrance steps, the Reward is designed to ride lower, so single pull-out entrance steps are perfect.

The Reward trailers have twin 30-LB LP tanks that are kept in a contoured compartment in the front cap. The 12-volt electrical system includes two AMG batteries with a multi-stage converter.

The Reward is designed to be enjoyed throughout Spring, Summer, and Autumn, with full water, sewer, and electric systems. For cold weather camping, and for winter storage, you would, of course, keep the water system empty – there is a winterization bypass valve in the water system access compartment.

Interior Comfort and Convenience

Designed and built with pride in Canada, the Reward is, of course, intended for use in the Canadian climate. The Reward trailers feature the Truma® Combi Comfort water heater/furnace – one of the most advanced appliances in the RV industry.

The 25-foot General Coach Citation Reward trailer is very comfortable for a couple or a small family. With a mid-size galley and all the appliances you could ever want. The 28-foot model features a slightly different floor plan, with a wrap around sofa in the front, with a side table.

One of the many benefits of dealing with a factory that is flexible enough to customize some aspects of the trailer became evident recently, when a customer asked if there was an option to add another adult-size sleeping area – the design team retrofitted the front bench seating to include a pull-out drawer with wheels and a bed board, and voila – there was another guest sleeping area. Roger says that this feature will probably become standard equipment in some models.

While the Reward facilities are top quality in materials, design, and workmanship, as Roger describes the interior, “a bathroom is a bathroom, and a bedroom is a bedroom”. You have excellent bathroom shower, vanity, and toilet appointments, and the bedroom can be configured with King Koil pocket coil mattress, twin, or queen bed sizes, with decorative throw pillows, quilted bedspread with duvet. Underbed storage is, of course, generous and easily accessed.

The Dometic® 510 porcelain toilet is truly a throne for all seasons, and the step-in tub with shower surround is ideal for a trailer of this size. There is a tinted skylight over the shower, which helps illuminate the bathroom, and the Maxxair 4500K vent fan helps keep the bathroom steam and fragrances under control.

Warranty Coverage

You may wonder what kind of customer support and warranty coverage you will have when you purchase a trailer that is, at the outset, a very rare model. The official limited structural warranty for a new Reward travel trailer is five years, non transferable…. RV loan term lengths vary by lender and the amount you borrow. Larger loans for RVs tend to be longer, but each lender varies on the maximum length of time. It is possible to pay off an RV loan early in many cases. If you think might do so, be sure to avoid lenders with prepayment penalties.

Yes, you can get a 10-year term on an RV loan. RV loans can be much larger than auto loans, and many lenders will give you more time to pay them off.

RV loans have higher interest rates than auto loans, so we focused on options with relatively low rates to come up with our list of the best options. We focused on RV loans that apply to a variety of RV types and loan amounts. While RV loans generally require higher credit scores than other loan types, we found a good option for poor credit.

Lightstream RV Loans

LightStream is an online lender backed by Truist (Member FDIC) that's known for quick funding and low interest rates on a variety of loan types, including RV loan rates. The bank has also gotten top marks from Insider for personal loans and auto loans . So, it's no surprise that LightStream also offers competitive RV loans. 

While this lender doesn't offer massive RV loans — the maximum loan amount is $100,000 — the typical buyer can finance their RV comfortably within this amount and get a competitively low interest rate from LightStream in the process. While some lenders exclude some types of RVs, LightStream is open to most all of them, including trailer-style RVs.

Truist RV Loans

Truist is best for RV loans over $100,000. While that figure seems high, it's probably necessary if you're considering one of the class A or C motorhomes that Truist finances with secured loans — these are generally more expensive RVs. 

Truist is best for luxury RV purchases or financing large motorhomes. It's worth noting that Truist's RV loans may require a down payment since they're so large. Truist charges the same rates for both new and used motorhomes, which could be helpful for buyers looking for a used motorhome. 

Alliant Credit Union RV Loans

Alliant has a litany of RV types it can finance. The RVs you borrow for must be less than 15 years old and have mileage under 75,000. 

Alliant is a credit union, so you need to join Alliant to take out a loan. To qualify, you can work with one of the credit union's partner organizations, be a family member of an Alliant member, or work in a community near the credit union's corporate headquarters in Illinois. If none of those apply to you, you can qualify by joining Foster Care to Success , and Alliant will cover your $5 joining fee.

Southeast Financial RV Loans

Southeast Financial is best for borrowers with poor credit. Other RV loan lenders don't allow borrowers with credit scores below 600 take out a loan, but Southeast Financial welcomes borrowers with poorer credit. Even if you have previous bankruptcies, the lender will still consider you for a loan. Keep in mind that the shakier your financial situation, the higher an interest rate you'll likely pay.

You'll also be able to get any type of RV you'd like with Southeast Financial — you won't have to worry about the restrictions you'll have to keep in mind with other lenders. Provided you have solid credit, you'll be able to borrow up to $4 million, which is a significant amount of money to finance the vehicle you want. 

Which RV Lender Is the Most Trustworthy?

The Better Business Bureau, a non-profit organization focused on consumer protection and trust, evaluates businesses using factors like their responsiveness to consumer complaints, honesty in advertising, and clarity about business practices. Here is each company's score:

Other RV Lenders We Considered

• Bank of America : Bank of America only offers RV loans indirectly through select dealerships. You won't be able to apply online on your own, or purchase outside of a dealership.
• Navy Federal Credit Union : Navy Federal's loans for RV purchases start with APRs higher than those found at other lenders.
• USAA : A popular option for financing for military families, USAA's interest rates are not the most competitive for RV financing. 
• US Bank : Interest rates start lower at other banks. Additionally, a 1% prepayment penalty applies if you pay off your loan within a year of opening it. 

Other ways to finance your RV purchase

The lenders we've looked at aren't the only way you can get an RV loan. You might want to consider checking with your local credit union to see if they have RV financing available. Oftentimes, credit unions offer these types of loans. If you're a member or are open to joining a credit union, it could be beneficial to find out if it offers RV loans.

Another popular way to finance small RV purchases is with a personal loan . However, these unsecured loans may have higher interest rates than an RV loan. If you can qualify for an RV loan, it's probably your best bet. 

How can I get an RV loan?

RV loans are much tougher to qualify for than an auto loan, with most RV lenders requiring a minimum credit score of 700 and requiring large down payments.

There are several things to expect in the process of getting an RV loan once you've found the trailer or motorhome you want to finance.

• Gather information on your employment, income, and other loans : Since RV loans can be large, expect to be asked for a lot of info on your income and assets. Like a home loan, some RV lenders ask to see two years of income history and tax returns. You may also need information on where you live and other debts you have.
• You'll need an inspection on the RV: Like buying a house, you'll need to have the RV inspected before you're able to get a loan on it. An inspection will likely cost between $150 and $200. 
• You'll likely need to get a newer RV in order to finance it : Most RV lenders require that RVs are model year 2009 or newer. If you're looking for a vintage RV or trailer, financing might not be ideal. In these situations, you might want to consider waiting until you can pay with cash, or using a personal loan instead.
