48 hours in . . . Rhodes, an insider guide to the Island of the Knights

rhodes

Medieval appeal and endless beaches

Despite being a classic bucket-and-spade destination, there is so much more to Rhodes than its 300-plus days of sunshine and long, sandy beaches. The grand Dodecanese island’s Unesco World Heritage-listed capital is Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited medieval town and worth a visit in its own right. The Knights of the Order of St John, the Ottomans and Fascist-era Italian occupiers have all passed through, leaving an indelible mark. History-lovers flock to the majestic Acropolis of Lindos and its Cycladic-style village of Lindos. Adventure aficionados head to the verdant interior for hiking and mountain biking, and south to Prasonisi for kite and windsurfing.

The northern half of the island is the most developed tourism-wise and where most hotels are located, including multiple all-inclusive options. New, high-end resorts are slowly unfolding along the south-eastern coast. The wind-whipped western side is where you’ll find serene, umbrella-free beaches amid a landscape of dramatic mountains, low shrubs and castle ruins.

A hire car is essential on Greece’s fourth largest island, if only to touch on a handful of its myriad attractions. Rhodes is blessed with lush landscapes that alternate between flat seascapes and soaring mountaintops. Consider basing yourself on the northeast coast, which allows easy access to the Old Town, ancient sites and plenty of great beaches.

Today though, you won’t need the car. Schedule your time knowing you have a lot of ground to cover on foot in the Old Town . Pre-book a licensed local guide, such as archaeologist Portokalenia Vratsali (00 30 695 177 5048), and request a brief overview of the town’s vast history before embarking on your private tour. A combined 10-euro ticket allows admission to the Palace of the Grand Master , Archaeological Museum of Rhodes , the Church of Our Lady of the Castle and the Decorative Arts Collection .

Replenish your energy stores with a power smoothie and quick bite (perhaps vegan feta and cherry tomato pancakes) at veggie haven To Marouli (26 Platonos St; 00 30 2241 304394), a short walk from the Street of the Knights. Put on a hat, reapply sunscreen and refill your water bottle; it’s time to scale the city’s defensive walls during their narrow weekday opening slot, noon until 3pm April through October. Starting at the palace, the wall walk takes about 35 minutes and affords remarkable views over the city’s gates, ports and towers.

As the sun goes down, stroll through the myrtle- and lavender-scented moat surrounding the Old Town, accessible from the gate where the wall walk ends. Indulge in a lie-down under a palm tree. The path leads all the way to the new town, where you can pick up a mastic-flavoured ice cream from family-run Stani (28 Agias Anastasias St; 00 30 2241 031991).

In the evening, take a romantic walk through the dimly lit cobblestoned lanes of the Old Town, where the atmosphere is nothing less than magical.

Cloaked from view down a quiet alleyway is lovingly restored Ottoman residence turned boutique hotel Marco Polo Mansion (40-42 Agiou Fanouriou St; 00 30 22410 25562), which plays host to a creative Mediterranean restaurant amid lemon trees, jasmine and honeysuckle. You’ll feel like you've been let in on a closely guarded foodie secret. Book in advance and put your faith in ebullient proprietor Efi Dede’s menu suggestions - think slow-cooked octopus in sea urchin sauce, sea bream risotto, and skewered lamb with rosemary and pistachio.

The night is still young, so pop up to the terrace of L'Éternel French Bar (18 Platonos St, Old Town; 00 30 694 858 0288), a three-minute walk away, for a glass of wine, views of Old Town landmarks and a jazz and swing soundtrack.

Rise early and start your day with a coffee at Kallithea Springs , a short drive south of the capital. Wander across mosaic pathways through the public baths built by the Italians in 1929 that have since been restored. In the Rotunda building, pore over glamorous black and white images of Rhodians swimming in the mineral springs during the complex’s Fifties and Sixties heyday.

From there, head to Anthony Quinn Bay , named after the US actor who starred in The Guns of Navarone, scenes of which were shot in Rhodes. Witness the natural splendour of this well-hidden cove, where cliffs covered in flowering shrubs embrace a pebbled shore and provide shelter to calm blue-green waters. Take your first dip of the day here while the sun shows off the bay in its most flattering light.

Make the 300-step trek up to Panagia Tsambika monastery and its chapel, long considered a pilgrimage for women wishing to bear children. The location atop a cypress-studded peak offers views of deep Aegean blues lapping onto Tsambika beach. The devout give praise to an icon of the Virgin Mary thought to possess miraculous baby-making powers, which is kept in a newer monastery nearby.

Lunch at classic seafront seafood joint Stegna Kozas (Stegna; 00 30 22440 22632), which started out in 1932 with old man Kozas serving up the day’s catch with garden patch-grown vegetables to local fisherman from his log cabin. Grab a table outdoors and order fried rouzetia, a local hand-caught fish served with garlic dip.

No trip to Rhodes is complete without experiencing one of the Dodecanese’s most important ancient sites. In mid-afternoon, once the cruise crowds have gone, walk up to the Acropolis of Lindos and revel in the fourth-century Temple of Athena Lindia, the Propylaea, a Hellenistic Stoa and twin natural harbours.

Cool off at the coastal town’s main beach or at St Paul’s Bay , an eight-minute walk south of the archaeological site.

acropolis of lindos, rhodes

Dinner in whitewashed Lindos village means Mavrikos (Lindos; 00 30 2244 031232). Chef Dimitris Mavrikos and his co-owner sibling Michalis will welcome you like an old friend to the homey restaurant they inherited from their grandfather, and they’ve made quite a few over the years. Jackie Onassis, Nelson Rockefeller and Barbara Streisand count among guests who have dined under the grape vines on perennial house specialties such as chickpea dip with orange juice and garlic, cuttlefish risotto in its ink and orzo with tiny Lindian shrimp.

Afterwards, amble through the winding stone-paved streets of Lindos, whose long history as a naval power brought prosperity, and keep an eye out for majestic stone-built captains' homes built between the 16th and 18th centuries.

If you’re in the mood for a serious cocktail or a locally bottled bubbly, your best bet is rooftop bar Cozze & Champagne (Lindos; 00 30 6944 454234).

Kókkini Porta Rossa , originally a 14th-century knight's abode, is the most fascinating place to stay in Rhodes. Spend time with the worldly proprietors speaking about their native island and the backstory of their antique-filled boutique lodging, a true labour of love. In the six rooms, bedspreads in hues of forest green and eggplant, rich Anatolian rugs and beamed wooden ceilings lend warmth as sheer curtains let sunlight in.

Budget Beauty

Marco Polo Mansion is arguably the most atmospheric of the Old Town’s hotels. Bohemian flair, laughter and warmth run through this former Ottoman official’s residence, creating an atmosphere more akin to a favourite uncle’s house than a boutique b&b. There are seven rooms; you have a choice of either the ‘antique selection’ or those based around the garden.

Thanks to its southerly location, Rhodes enjoys one of the longest tourist seasons in Greece. Hotels along the coast generally open April through October, while those in the capital tend to operate year-round.

The island is busiest in the summer months, when the weather is hot and dry, whereas May, September and October suit those who prefer quieter beaches, restaurants and bars, though the odd shower is possible in spring, particularly inland. Cruise ships continue to call in during shoulder months, therefore historical sites do remain busy.

Autumn and winter, when flight fares and hotel rates drop considerably, are ideal seasons to arrange a stay in the medieval capital. Lose yourself in its labyrinthine backstreets, visiting museums and monuments and chatting with locals who have adjusted to their usual day-to-day rhythms.

Local laws and etiquette

• Locals and visiting Greeks tend to have lunch or dinner late, as in after 2pm and 9pm respectively. Almost all tavernas and restaurants open at 12pm and then around 7pm to cater to early diners, while many don’t close at all in the afternoon. Some restaurants in the capital only open for dinner.

• In terms of dress code, shorts and beachwear is fine at casual tavernas, while trousers and skirts are required at smarter restaurants. Covering up in church is mandatory; shawls and skirts are provided if necessary.

• Tipping is not required, however most restaurants have a cover charge for bread. A tip of around 10 per cent is most welcome.

• Public transport is good and affordable. Rhodes KTEL intercity buses (00 30 22410 27706) offer regular services from Rhodes Town to resort areas on the eastern coast, in addition to Epta Piges. Purchase tickets at the central KTEL station on Rimini Square, from where buses depart, or on board the vehicle. RODA covers bus routes in Rhodes Town and nearby areas, while it also links the capital to destinations on the western coast. Tickets can be purchased from most kiosks, mini markets and the airport. They cost more if purchased from the driver on the bus. RODA buses depart from the terminal on Averof Street. The Rhodes-Paradissi line connects the city with the airport.

• Cabs (dark blue and white) are easy to find in Rhodes’ new town and can be booked by phone for other destinations. Rhodes Taxi & Limo Services (00 30 22410 69800) operates 24 hours year-round. Rates can be checked and bookings made online for airport and port transfers to and from your destination. Rhodes airport is very busy, so book transfers in advance. A taxi ride from the airport to Rhodes Town should cost around €25 (£22), with a small charge for baggage. If staying in the Old Town, expect to be dropped off at the gate nearest to your hotel. There are taxi ranks at the airport and selected resort areas including Faliraki, Ialyssos, Lindos and Afandou. Rates double between 12am and 5am.

• Hiring a car is strongly recommended so that you can explore Rhodes independently. Rhodes Old Town is almost entirely pedestrianised, therefore avoid it altogether on four wheels. Stay on the main roads and monitor road signs. Don’t be shy to ask locals to point you in the right direction if you find you’re lost.

• Handshake greetings are the norm, however, a kiss on each cheek is commonplace if you know one another well.

23 Insider Tips for Your Trip to Rhodes

Waste no time searching for the best in this abundant island – we have done it for you..

Lina Kapetaniou | July 22nd, 2021

Despite being best known for mass tourism, in recent years Rhodes has been offering a greater variety of exclusive experiences. Avoid busy Sokratous street in the Old Town, and instead visit the Street of the Knights in the evening hours. Avoid the better-known beaches and drive south – the further south, the fewer crowds you will encounter. Pick your accommodation depending on the kind of holiday you have in mind, head for the hinterland, and discover the island’s many different faces.

1. A stay with medieval hues

The Old Town is quite busy and developed, but there are many quiet corners where you can truly enjoy the atmosphere. Here you will find two boutique guest houses, totally in harmony with the spirit of the medieval architecture and décor.

The 700-year-old building housing Marco Polo Mansion preserves the imprint of all the nations which passed through Rhodes’ Old Town. The floors are the work of the Italians, while Mehmet Aga, who lived here, left the small Ottoman-style windows and the hamam. Brightly colored painted ceilings, old wooden doors, carefully selected furniture and a beautiful internal yard, where dinner is served, complete the experience.

Kokkini Porta also has a rich history on display: from a knight’s house in 1350 to the home of the Muslim teacher in 1700, to a carpenter’s workshop in 1912 to a derelict building in 2008, it has been restored with great care and respect for its identity. The Deniz suite has a great view from the sahnisi, the covered wooden terrace.

Marco Polo Mansion: Aghiou Fanouriou 40-42, Tel. (+30) 22410.25562, marcopolomansion.gr, from 80 euros for a double room, including breakfast.

Kokkini Porta: Arch. Efthimiou 24, Kokkini Pyli, Tel. (+30) 22410.75114, kokkiniporta.com, from 375 euros a night for a 2-person suite with breakfast.

2. Fit on vacation

From pilates and beach volleyball to evening tennis and aerial yoga. Gennadi Grand Resort is ideal for those who don’t want to give up their fitness routine on holiday. The resort has three large open-air swimming pools, which also offer aqua aerobics classes, an indoor pool, a gym with treadmills and weights, while for an extra charge guests can hire a personal trainer, and go on hiking and mountain biking tours.

3. Historical luxury

It was named “the big hotel of the roses” after the colorful rose garden that surrounded it. The Governor of the Dodecanese commissioned its construction by a Venetian firm, and the hotel opened its doors in 1927. Since then, prominent visitors to the island, from Eleftherios Venizelos and Winston Churchill to Aristotle Onassis and Andreas Papandreou have stayed at the Grande Albergo delle Rose . A complete renovation undertaken in 2002 was like a rebirth for the hotel.

All rooms and suits exude an air of gentility, while they come equipped with a jacuzzi, Bulgari body care products and 24-hour room service.

Grande Albergo delle Rose: G. Papanikolaou 5, Rhodes, Tel. (+30) 22410.97400, gadr.gr, from 250 for a double room with breakfast.

4. Hi-tech situations

The top floors of the Rodos Palace hotel from the 7th to the 17th floor host rooms and suites built on the abav2 concept. Large sea view windows and modern design offer exclusive privileges and hi-tech convenience: ultra-fast WiFi, touch-panel light, temperature and humidity controls, smart TV. Even the showers are controlled through a touch panel.

6. A day in Lindos

It could well be the main town of a Cycladic island. Lindos, with its white houses and the acropolis perched on the top of the hill, offers an almost barren, lunar landscape bathed in the summer sun. The temperature rises considerably in the summer months, and the truth is there not much shade to be found. Start from the spa of the Caesars Gardens hotel , a true haven of cool. Pools, moisturising treatments, massage and thalassotherapy will revive you until late afternoon. Sunset is the ideal hour to wander the little alleys of Lindos.

At the Cozze Champagne Rooftop Cocktail Bar you can enjoy a view of the village and the sea while sipping a glass of champagne or a well-made cocktail.

7. Avant-garde Rhodian cuisine

This is how Executive Chef Giorgos Troumouhis and his team describe the dishes served at Noble Gourmet Restaurant . Perched on the top floor of the Elysium Resort & Spa in Kallithea, you will enjoy the unbelievable view and a tasting menu inspired by local ingredients and the Rhodian cooking tradition, made using contemporary techniques and a fresh gaze. Highlights include pitaroudia (chickpea fritters) and salt cod with roe.

8. There is only one Mavrikos

The Dodecanese were still under Italian rule when Mavrikos first opened its doors. In the cobbled courtyard with its arches and mulberry trees you will taste award-winning dishes, which are traditional with a creative touch. The food has the same nobility and gentility as the owners and staff. Choose wine from local wineries, served at a fair price.

Mavrikos: Lindos, Tel. (+30) 22440.31232.

9. Meze at sunset

On the coastal road, KoumbaRaki is the very definition of a good meze place. Fresh fried red mullet, cuttlefish in its ink, grilled calamari, a wide choice of ouzo and tsipouro. The ideal time to visit is at sunset, when you can enjoy the view of the sun diving into the sea.

10. An 89-year-old fish taverna

The Koza family has been serving seafood by the sea on Stegnon beach since 1932. Today, the third generation continues the tradition, keeping the freshness of the ingredients and adding new ideas such as monkfish in beer batter served on a beetroot purée, or grilled shrimp served with boiled potatoes and tartare sauce. Don’t miss the cuttlefish and rice, seafood spaghetti and smoked octopus. The bonus is a long wine and ouzo list.

12. The springs at Kallithea

The 1st of July 1929 was a very hot day on Rhodes. This did not prevent the baths at Kallithea from holding a grand opening in the presence of the Italian King Victor Emmanuel. The Italians were the first to recognise the healing properties of the natural springs, and the beauty of the surrounding landscape, and for this reason the buildings follow the notion of “architectura naturale,” which harmonises with the natural environment. Wander through the cobbled atria, walk down to the beach, and visit a photo exhibit tracing the history of the baths.

Unfortunately, access to the springs is not available at present as the facilities are scheduled for renovation.

Kallithea Springs: Tel. (+30) 22410.65564, open 08.00-18.00, 5 euros.

13. Satisfying beach life

Most beaches on the island are long and sandy, particular in the south. Closer to town, choose Afantou for sheer length – however many people there are you will always find a free spot. A little before you get there, Traganou has fine pebbles and several caves. On the same side, and a little closer to town, is Anthony Quinn beach . Its pine trees, pebbles and azure waters made the famous actor fall in love with the beach and want to buy it, something he was not able to do. Arrive early to find a free spot.

For a quick swim in town, the cosmopolitan Elli beach is ideal. More daring swimmers will attempt a dive from the platform. For coffee, food and cocktails, head right to the Ronda beach bar . A good choice close to town is Aghia Marina , and the tasteful Santa Marina beach bar .

Ronda beach bar: Tel. (+30) 6937.404.446.

Santa Marina beach bar: Rhodes-Kallithea road, Tel. (+30) 6932.917.427.

14. Southern safari

The south of the island is wilder and less touristy. The exception is Prasonissi , the little island off the southern tip of Rhodes which is connected to the main island by a narrow neck of land. The location is exposed to the winds, and has become a paradise for surfers and other watersports fans. Water skis, inflatables, jet skis, wakeboards and other equipment is available to rent from one of the many rental shops located along the beach.

If you prefer something quieter, a few kilometers to the north you will find Aghios Georgios beach , one of the few non-organized beaches on the island – long, sandy, and with crystal clear waters. It is approached via a good quality unpaved road. A little further north, at Lahania, the Mojito Beach Bar is famous for its cocktails, while Sole Giaguaro serves delicious Italian cuisine with the signature of Giovanni Scaraggi, a recent contestant in a TV cooking show.

Mojito Beach Bar: Tel. (+30) 6957.672.682.

Sole Giaguaro: Tel. (+30) 22440.46262, open daily 18:00-23:00, reservations essential.

15. Canoe and biking adventure

Forest and lake on Rhodes? You may not expect it, but in the northwest of the island the construction of a dam built in 1989 has created a unique wetland habitat around the artificial lake of Apolakkia. The protected area is part of the Natura 2000 network, and home to the Rhodescape Adventure Park , created by three young people with a love for nature and the island. Based on low-impact tourism principles, the park is built from wood, and features a café and a multitude of activities for adults and children: from archery, horse riding and canoeing to biking and zip lining over the lake.

16. Coffee, breakfast, and drinks in town

One of the best spots for coffee and breakfast in Rhodes town is the Yachting Club Café next to the Mandraki marina. The trees offer their shade, the service is exceptional, the coffee is superb – and it stays open late if you are in the mood for a relaxed drink. You will find a mellow mood at The Last Butler , which specializes in jazz and expertly made cocktails. A different experience is on offer at Sissitio (Socratous and Ippodamou, Old Town, tel. 22410-35773) which is housed in a listed monument that in the past served as a place of worship and a poorhouse. Ideal for brunch or afternoon coffee in the cobbled courtyard.

Yachting Club Café: Plateia Neoriou 3-5, Mandraki, Tel. (+30) 22410.75723.

17. A breath of fresh air in Kritinia

Built on a rise, with a panoramic view of the sea, the village of Kritinia is famous for its castle. It was built in the late 15th century by the Venetians to protect the western side of the island from Ottoman raids. A good time to visit is the evening, when the heat has subsided, and the sun sets opposite the castle.

The village hosts a small folk museum with everyday objects from earlier eras. The village square enjoys the shade of two large trees, and looks out on the sea. You can enjoy coffee here or at the Mylos café by the village entrance, which also has a good view. Around 5 kilometers from the village is Kopria beach , which is ideal for diving, with fine pebbles and blue waters.

18. Through the eucalyptus

For about 1.5 kilometers, you will see nothing but eucalyptus trees on either side. The narrow road which joins the Rhodes-Lindos highway with the village of Kolybia is a work of the Italians, which are said to have chosen the eucalyptus for its insect repellent qualities. Turn right at the end of the road for the Atlantica Imperial Resort & Spa , home to the Mylos and Blue Bay restaurants, which are also open to non-guests. Both serve creative cuisine under the direction of chef Ilias Kakouris.

19. The Old Town from above

How would it be to see the Old Town, with its narrow alleyways, its thick walls protecting it from the outside world, its arches and orate buildings, from above? This opportunity is now offered by the Ministry of Culture, which has recently opened to the public a route along the Old City walls . Another way to experience the atmosphere of the medieval town of Rhodes within the walls is to take a stroll in the evening in the calm, quiet streets away from the crowds and the shops, like Ippoton and Omirou streets which skirt the walls. It is worth taking a stroll to sense the mystique which emanates from the rich history of the place.

20. Filerimou Monastery

Sited on a hill, surrounded by cypress and pine trees, is the monastery of Filerimou. Located just 11 kilometers from the city of Rhodes, it is an oasis of cool with dense trees and many paths for walks around the monastery, and views of Ialysos and the sea. The monastery itself, built in the 14th century during the era of the Knights is an architectural masterpiece, with stone arches and little chapels.

Let’s explore Rhodes

Rhodes travel guide

You can’t keep me away from the Greek Islands when the summer months arrive, and remarkable Rhodes is one of my all-time favourites to visit.

I feel it’s somewhat overshadowed by the popular kids like Santorini and Mykonos, but believe me when I say that Rhodes offers so much. From luxury resorts and beautiful beaches to rich history and delectable dining, I know you’re going to love this gem of an island too.

About the author

Jessie Moore is a luxury travel expert with years of experience travelling the world to find the best destinations, hotels and adventures.

Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, will charm you with its rich history, magnificent beaches, and vibrant culture. This sun-soaked island offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for visitors. Expect to be entranced by ancient ruins, crystal-clear waters, and a lively atmosphere catering to a wide range of interests.

I love that each region of Rhodes has its unique flavour and attractions. The mediaeval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a labyrinth of narrow streets filled with boutique shops, tavernas, museums, and the iconic Palace of the Grand Master. While the cosmopolitan area of Lindos boasts glistening sandy beaches, the ancient Acropolis, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

With so much to see and do, this Rhodes travel guide aims to help you create a memorable holiday experience. Discover the top sights, best local cuisine, and hidden gems that make Rhodes just as enchanting today as it was in the time of the ancient Greeks.

How to get to Rhodes

Travelling to Rhodes is quite simple, with various options available for you. This beautiful Greek island is well-connected by air and sea, making it an easily accessible destination for travellers.

By air: Rhodes International Airport (RHO) is the main gateway to the island, located in the northwestern part of the island, near the town of Paradisi.

Major airlines offer direct flights from several European cities during the peak season, while during the rest of the year, connecting flights are available through Athens.

Some of the UK-based airlines operating in Rhodes include British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and TUI.

Rhodes Old Town Restaurant

By boat:  If you prefer a more scenic journey, there are numerous ferry services linking Rhodes to other Greek islands and mainland ports.

The main port in Rhodes is located in Rhodes Town, with frequent connections to ports like Piraeus, Athens, and Crete.

There are also routes connecting Rhodes with neighbouring islands such as Kos, Symi, and Leros. Some of the popular ferry operators are Blue Star Ferries, Dodekanisos Seaways and Anek Lines.

I’d advise to check the ferry schedules before planning your trip, as they may change depending on the season.

Once you’ve arrived in Rhodes, there are several transport options to explore the island, including local buses, taxis, and car rentals.

How to get around Rhodes

When exploring Rhodes, you’ve got several transport options to pick from.

By bus: Public buses operate frequently in Rhodes, connecting the island’s major destinations such as Lindos, Faliraki, and the town of Rhodes.

You can easily find bus schedules and routes at the local bus stations. Keep in mind that public transport becomes less frequent in the evenings and off-season months.

By car: If you prefer more flexibility, I’d suggest hiring a car as an excellent option. Numerous car rental agencies are available at the airport and in the main towns.

Driving in Rhodes is relatively straightforward, with well-signposted roads. Remember to bring your valid driving licence and always follow the local traffic rules.

Jessie in Rhodes Old Town

By taxi: Taxis provide a more comfortable and quicker mode of transport, though they tend to be more expensive.

You can find taxi ranks in highly populated areas or book one through a local taxi service. Uber has been available in Rhodes since April 2023.

By bike or scooter: For shorter distances, bicycles or scooters can be rented from various shops across the island.

They offer a great way to explore Rhodes at your own pace and are an eco-friendly alternative. Ensure that you wear a helmet and follow safety guidelines.

Best time to visit Rhodes

As I’m sure you’d expect, peak season to visit Rhodes is the summer months when the weather is warm and the water temperature just perfect. But Rhodes can be explored in other seasons too.

I think spring is an excellent time to visit Rhodes, as the weather starts to warm up and the island becomes more vibrant. You can expect milder temperatures, ranging from 15°C to 25°C, making it comfortable for exploring the ancient sites and towns.

The landscape is in full bloom, with wildflowers and greenery covering the island, providing beautiful photo opportunities. Keep in mind that, during this time, sea temperatures may still be a bit cool for swimming.

Summer is the peak season in Rhodes, and for good reason. The weather is warm, with average temperatures between 25°C and 30°C, and there’s plenty of sunshine, perfect for enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches.

With the calm sea waters, this is an ideal time for water sports such as snorkelling, diving, and sailing. However, be prepared for larger crowds at popular tourist spots, as well as higher prices for accommodation and amenities.

I consider autumn to be another fantastic time to visit Rhodes, especially if you’re seeking fewer crowds and still enjoy pleasant weather. In this season, temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C, and you can still enjoy swimming in the sea, as the water remains warm from the summer months.

The landscape starts to transform into beautiful shades of orange and gold, creating a picturesque atmosphere for strolling through mediaeval Rhodes Old Town or hiking in the nearby hills.

Although winter is the least popular season for travelling to Rhodes, it can be a great time to explore the island’s historical sites and cultural attractions without the crowds. Expect cooler temperatures, ranging from 10°C to 15°C, and occasional rain.

Take advantage of off-peak prices and immerse yourself in the local lifestyle by visiting traditional taverns, attending cultural events, and discovering the island’s rich history. Keep in mind that some tourist facilities may be closed during the winter months.

Frequently asked questions

How long to spend in rhodes.

The ideal duration to spend in Rhodes depends on your preferences and interests. The island can be explored on a long weekend but most travellers choose to stay for 5-10 days to enjoy a more relaxed pace.

With so many incredible luxury hotels with gorgeous spas and things to do in Rhodes, I’m sure you won’t want to leave!

Is Rhodes good for solo travellers?

While known as a destination for couples and families, I think Rhodes is a fantastic destination for solo travellers. The island is generally safe, easy to navigate, and offers various activities, such as sightseeing, beach-hopping, and enjoying local food and nightlife.

Additionally, the friendly locals and numerous fellow travellers mean you’ll have ample opportunities to meet new people and make friends during your stay.

Is Rhodes expensive?

I’d say Rhodes is one of the midrange Greek Islands in terms of price. It’s certainly not as expensive as the likes of Mykonos and Santorini, but it’s still more pricey than some of the smaller islands.

Of course you can determine the price by choosing when to travel and also in your choice of hotels and activities.

How many Michelin-star restaurants in Rhodes?

Rhodes does not currently have any Michelin-star restaurants. However, the island is known for its exceptional local cuisine and has many highly-rated and unique dining experiences to offer.

My personal recommendations are Rattan in Faliraki and Thalatta Fine Dining Restaurant at the Lindos Grand Hotel & Spa .

Greece wildfires: should you cancel your holiday to Rhodes?

By Sarah James

A fire fighting aircraft drops water over a wildfire close to village of Vati in the southern part of the Greek island...

Summer 2023 is turning into one of the hottest on record – in July, certain destinations across Europe broke records for the warmest days ever recorded from Spain to Italy – causing health concerns and disruption to locals and tourists alike.

Wildfires swept across Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands. The devastating fires happened at the peak of the island's summer holiday season; up to 10,000 British tourists were visiting Rhodes throughout July, and thousands more have holidays booked over the next couple of weeks and months.

What caused the fires in Rhodes?

The wildfires started on the week of Monday 17 July, but by Saturday 22 July had spread to the island's eastern coast, one of the most-travelled parts of Rhodes. The sudden pick-up of the fires resulted in some tourists leaving their holiday accommodation and staying in shelters while waiting to travel home. A lack of rain (much of the island has been dry for up to seven weeks leading up to the fires spreading) and hot temperatures contributed to the problem.

Is it safe to travel to Rhodes?

As of Tuesday 1 August, the Greek authorities lifted the state of emergency in Rhodes. The FCDO does not currently advise against travel to Rhodes – the official advice on the gov.uk website for those stranded in Rhodes is to “contact your airline or travel operator who can assist you with return travel to the UK.” To those who have holidays to Rhodes booked this summer, it advises, “If you are planning to travel to any areas affected by wildfires, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel.” However, some tour operators and airlines have cancelled both flights and package holidays to Rhodes.

A firefighter wearing a mask looks on as wildfires burn the hill side forests near the village of Vati just north of the...

Which airlines have cancelled flights to Rhodes?

The following airlines are altering their flight schedule to avoid taking more tourists to Rhodes, and to bring back stranded British tourists.

  • Jet2: all flights operating as normal.
  • Tui : all flights operating as normal.
  • Easyjet: all flights operating as normal.
  • Ryanair: all flights operating as normal.
  • British Airways: all flights operating as normal.

Are airlines charging tourists to change their holiday plans?

It really depends on who you booked with, so keep checking in with your tour operator for the latest information.

  • Jet2: as all flights to Rhodes until Sunday 30 July have been cancelled, Jet2 offered customers either a refund or the opportunity to rebook at a later date.
  • Tui : all customers booked on cancelled flights will receive a refund.
  • Easyjet: customers booked to travel up to and including Thursday 10 August are being contacted by the company to discuss options for travel. Those not wishing to travel are able to change their flights.
  • Ryanair: as all flights operate as normal, customers should not expect to be able to change their flights.
  • British Airways: customers needing to return from Rhodes earlier than their booked inbound flight were able to change their flight for free, and those not wishing to travel could postpone their outbound flights without charge – contact British Airways to double check whether this still applies to your booking.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my holiday?

Again, that depends. If you've booked flights and hotels separately, you need to check your airline's latest policy regarding travel to the island. If FCDO does not advise against travel to Rhodes, the airline is able to still operate flights and is not required to refund customers who wish not to travel.

If you've booked a package holiday which includes flights and accommodation, the tour operator has a duty of care to travellers which means that trips to the island's affected areas might be cancelled, in which case refunds would be offered. Again, this will vary by operator – so check in with the company you booked with.

Will my travel insurance cover wildfires?

No, as the FCDO advice doesn't tell travellers not to visit Rhodes. Plus, even if the FDCO did advise against travel to Rhodes, the two types of UK healthcare available abroad (UK Global Health Insurance Card GHIC and UK European Health Insurance CARD (EHIC) do not cover expenses in the case of natural disasters.

Are any other Greek islands affected?

Around 19,000 people have been evacuated from Corfu, although the wildfires there have, at the time of publishing, been brought under control.

The Travel Expert

Rhodes Holidays – The Best Places to Stay for Couples, Families & Groups

Secluded beaches and rugged mountains, medieval towns and quaint villages, lively resorts and restful retreats – rhodes holidays have it all. .

I recall exploring the beautiful island of Rhodes many years ago, and finding each town and village more beautiful than the next. Rhodes Town is mesmerising, as is the hilltop village of Lindos, but I loved discovering Prasonisi Beach, at the bottom tip of the island, where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas collide – it was fascinating to see the two different seas coming together. I have some great memories from Rhodes holidays over the years.

I was delighted to hear Ryanair’s recent announcement to fly from Dublin to Rhodes this Summer, this is in addition to the already established route Aer Lingus offer to the island. For those of you clinging onto the hope of jetting away to Europe this year, Rhodes holidays may well be a popular choice, with flights scheduled to operate until the end of October.

Rhodes is packed with culture and history.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands in Greece and boasts a rich historical past mixed with modern resorts and luxurious hotels. Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage City and the Colossus of Rhodes is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World . I dare you not to fall in love with the whitewashed, picture perfect village of Lindos too – it is a must visit on any holiday to Rhodes.

But Rhodes is not all about history and culture, it has an abundance of holiday resorts for couples, families and groups – I have chosen my top picks of hotels, villas and resorts to make sure that you, like me, can experience some wonderful Rhodes holidays with family or friends.

Please note that some hotel facilities are subject to change, and as always, I recommend booking accommodation with flexible cancellation policy. Some links below are affiliate links, where I receive a small commission if a booking is made, but at no additional cost to you.

4-Star Island Boutique Hotel, Rhodes Town

Rhodes Town.

5-Star Atrium Platinum Resort & Spa, Ixia

The best five-star hotels in Rhodes for couples.

With its location on the west coast of Rhodes, you will be spoiled by the fabulous sunsets and breath-taking views during your stay at the Atrium Platinum Resort. There is so much to love about this resort from the beautiful design of the pool area with overwater bridges, to the four mouth-watering a la carte restaurants on offer. Choose to stay on a B&B, Half Board or All-Inclusive Basis.

For an extra special treat, check out the Deluxe Junior Suites with private pool and stunning sea views! If you’re able to tear yourself away from the luxurious resort, spend a perfect evening wandering through the narrow, cobbled streets and squares of the medieval Old Town, which is less than five km from the resort. The excellent TripAdvisor reviews for the Atrium Platinum Resort speak for themselves – this is one of the most popular Rhodes holidays for couples.

5-Star Casa Cook Rhodes, Kolymbia

luxurious Rhodes holidays for couples.

I have wanderlust just looking at the images of Casa Cook Rhodes, where the biggest decision you will make is whether to hang out on your hammock, or take a dip in the pool accessed directly from your private veranda. The style at Casa Cook is Bohemian and that is reflected in the minimally decorated pool villas, which are furnished with woven wall hangings, wicker lampshades, and natural surfaces.

This theme is enhanced further by the boutique hotel’s mountainous and wildflower backdrop. The atmosphere at the adult-only Casa Cook is laid back luxury with an emphasis on wellbeing for the body and soul. This is certainly a couples retreat with a twist.

5- Star Elysium Resort & Spa, Faliraki

five-star resort for couples in Rhodes.

Rhodes holidays at the Elysium Resort offer the best of both worlds – luxury beachfront accommodation located within easy reach of Rhodes’ liveliest resort Faliraki. This is the perfect choice if you want to mix luxury with nightlife, it also happens to be located just 15 minutes from Rhodes Town.

This chic resort offers elegant rooms and suites, many with stunning sea views, plus an array of bars and restaurants to choose from.  It is worth mentioning La Piscine Pool bar, which sits pride of place in the centre of the resort’s enormous lagoon style pool. It is perfect for chilling out with a cocktail during the day, and lets not forget the award-winning rooftop Noble Gourmet Restaurant that offers panoramic views and exceptional food. Both the restaurant and the chef at Noble have received prestigious awards in recent years.

Be sure to take time to unwind in the world class Serenity Spa with ESPA branded products and treatments. The incredible attention to detail and luxury offering at the Elysium has contributed to the amazing TripAdvisor reviews the resort consistently receives.

The Best Resorts in Rhodes for Families

5- star all-inclusive holiday village atlantica rhodes, kolymbia.

Holiday Village in Rhodes is one of the best all inclusive resorts for families in Rhodes.

Many families will be familiar with the ultimate action-packed Holiday Villages that TUI Holidays offer throughout many European destinations. The Holiday Village Atlantica in Rhodes is no exception, it is almost difficult to know where to begin. The standout facilities in my view include an onsite water park, an Aerial Adventure assault course, an evening entertainment programme, kids’ clubs  (creche 0-35 months,  clubs 3 – 8 years and 9 – 15 years), a mini-cinema, five restaurants, seven bars and four outdoor pools. I honestly could keep going…

Although children are the primary focus at this All-Inclusive resort, for the adults there is an Elemis Spa with a range of treatments, an adult indoor pool with sauna and steam room, and a swim-up bar, the perfect place to be while the children are being entertained 😉. This is one of the most popular choices for action packed Rhodes holidays for families.

4-Star Self Catering Sun Beach Resort Complex, Iayssos

Sun beach resort is a great value choice for Rhodes holidays for families,

Located in the north coast of Rhodes, the Sun Beach Resort is the perfect base for self-catering Rhodes holidays for families. Offering great value for a four-star property, it is worth looking particularly at the Kids Suites which are decorated with children in mind. They come complete with an activity table, drawing pads, crayons, and a Sony PlayStation 4 Game Console!

The resort boasts a full activity programme, a kids movie club and three outdoor playgrounds. Located on the beachfront and just 10 minutes from Rhodes Town, there are a lot of reasons to consider the Sun Beach Resort.

5-Star Atlantica Aegean Blue, Kolymbia

children's splash pool at the Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel, Rhodes.

A fun filled Rhodes holiday awaits the whole family at the Atlantica Aegean Blue with plenty of activities for all ages. The kids club is split into groups from three years, with up to two hours of activities on most days. However, the main talking point at this resort is the water park with flumes, slides, and space bowls. You can even compete against each other in a three-lane water slide race.

Premium family rooms will offer good space for two adults and two children with a partition between two sleeping areas, and for an additional supplement you can have direct access to a swimming pool from your terrace in the swim-up family rooms.

Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel, Rhodes.

The All-Inclusive options are well catered for with four restaurants to choose from and a specific children’s section in the Thalassa buffet restaurant. Your family won’t be left wanting at the Atlantica Aegean Blue.

The Atlantica Aegean Blue is also sold by TUI Holidays so you can choose Rhodes holidays with flights and hotel included, or alternatively book your own flights with Aer Lingus or Ryanair and select the hotel only option below.

However, if a more leisurely stay is your preference, there is plenty of choice to relax at one of the hotel’s six pools, or take a short walk to the hotel’s private beach. Family rooms sleep up to five guests and I would recommend a sea view room which normally holds just a small supplement over the garden view rooms.

Rhodes travel advice: the cancelled flights and hotels affected by fires

rhodes travel advice tui

A big evacuation effort is under way on the Greek island of Rhodes as wildfires engulf large swathes of the island.

As many as 10,000 Britons remain on the island , with thousands more due to depart in the coming days. Most of those with imminent departures have had their trips cancelled — but not all.

Here’s the latest travel information for people travelling to Rhodes. Smaller evacuations are also under way on Corfu and Evia.

What is the situation with flights?

Jet2 , Britain’s biggest tour operator, said all flights to Rhodes up to and including next Sunday were cancelled. Aircraft will be used to repatriate tourists. All passengers will be entitled to full refunds.

Tui cancelled all flights and holidays to Rhodes until Tuesday and confirmed that customers would be refunded. Passengers due to travel on Wednesday will be offered a fee free amendment to another holiday. The airline is sending its scheduled flights out empty to repatriate holidaymakers. It also operated three flights overnight Sunday into Monday to bring home passengers.

EasyJet said flights to Rhodes were operating as normal, but package holidays to the island have been cancelled until Wednesday. It is flying repatriation flights home on Monday afternoon and another on Tuesday morning.

Ryanair said flights were still running, and usual terms and conditions applied.

British Airways announced that a flight scheduled for Monday would bring tourists home and that customers already in Rhodes or due to fly out could change their flights free of charge. Anyone due to fly in the next week can postpone their trip free of charge. It will fly a bigger aircraft to Rhodes on Monday, allowing extra passengers to secure seats home.

Thomas Cook , which no longer operates its own flights and is now an online travel agent, said customers due to travel to the resorts of Kiotari and Lardos between now and July 31 could cancel their holidays for a refund. Holidaymakers to other parts of the island can get a full refund if they are due to travel on Monday.

What is the government’s latest advice?

The Foreign Office, which publishes travel advice for all countries, has stopped short of advising against all but essential travel to the islands .

This creates a catch-22 situation for people who have booked so-called DIY holidays. For travel insurance to kick in and guarantee it will cover losses, the Foreign Office must advise against travel.

Tourists are sheltered in a sports hall on Rhodes after being evacuated from the fires

Passengers booked with most, but not all, scheduled airlines are being offered some degree of flexibility. In this case, if your hotel is still open, it would be best to see if you can negotiate a change of dates with the accommodation provider.

If your hotel is closed but your flight is still operating you may be able to move the flight and claim for any losses on the hotel from your insurer. But it is a tricky situation.

What about people booked on a package holiday?

A package holiday is made up when two or more elements of a holiday are booked together at the same time, for example flight and hotel. You will have been issued with an Atol certificate.

Such holidays are covered under the package travel regulations, the rules of which dictate that holidaymakers can cancel for a refund “if unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances occur at the place of destination or its immediate vicinity which significantly affect the performance of the package or the carriage of passengers to the destination”.

In affected areas, tourists would have strong grounds to demand their holiday be cancelled.

What if my holiday is cut short?

Tourists on package holidays who have had to abandon their trips early because their accommodation can no longer be used are entitled to a partial refund under the regulations. The amount will not be exactly proportionate to the amount of days of the holiday complete, as subtractions can be made for flights. People on independent trips forced to leave their accommodation should be able to claim for any losses, including alternative arrangements on their insurance.

What has the government said?

The Foreign Office said: “We have sent a rapid deployment team to Rhodes. The team is supporting British nationals at the airport by assisting with emergency travel documents and liaising with travel operators and Greek authorities.

“If you are a British national affected by wildfires in Rhodes near Kiotari, Pefkoi, Lindos and the surrounding area, please follow the guidance from the emergency services. Call the Greek emergency services on 112 if you are in immediate danger. If you are planning to travel to Rhodes, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel that the area you plan to visit is not impacted by the current wildfires.”

What if I do not have my passport?

You should seek consular advice at Rhodes airport. You will be issued with emergency travel documents allowing you to return to the UK.

Travellers sit on the floor of the airport

Travel operators urged to refund UK holidaymakers who call off trips to Rhodes

‘Unconscionable’ to penalise travellers, says Which?, as firms cancel holidays to wildfire hit Greek island

Travel firms and airlines are being urged to reimburse passengers who decide against flying to Rhodes as the Greek island is ravaged by wildfires , with a leading consumer group arguing it would be “unconscionable” to withhold refunds.

Which? travel editor Rory Boland called on carriers to be “flexible” if customers decide for themselves that they do not want to fly to Rhodes, at a time when there have been emergency evacuations of more than 19,000 people on the island.

“It’s likely that those who are due to go to Rhodes now won’t want to go, and given the emergency operations that are taking place on the island, local authorities could probably do without more tourists arriving,” he said.

A string of travel companies have cancelled package holidays to the Greek island that were due to depart in the coming days. Tui said on Sunday evening that all passengers due to travel to Rhodes up to and including on Tuesday would receive full refunds, while those due to depart on Wednesday would be able to receive a full refund or change for free to another holiday.

EasyJet said those who were booked to travel to or from the island until Tuesday would be able to transfer to another date or request a flight voucher.

Thomas Cook will not take tourists to parts of the island considered most at risk until the end of the month, and Jet2 has confirmed that it will not fly travellers to the destination for at least a week.

British Airways said that customers already on Rhodes who needed to return home early would be able to change their flights for free, although it was expected there would be limited availability.

The Foreign Office’s website informs tourists planning to travel to Rhodes that they should check with their travel operator or hotel before travelling, to make sure that their visit would not be affected by the wildfires.

Experts have said that it could be harder for holidaymakers to claim compensation in the absence of advice from the Foreign Office not to travel to the destination, on health or safety grounds.

Despite this, Boland called on travel firms to do the right thing: “While there is no official Foreign Office advice against travel to Rhodes, it would be unconscionable for holiday companies to cash in on travellers’ sensible decision not to travel by not refunding or rebooking them.”

Passengers who have booked package holidays generally have more rights than those who have chosen flights and accommodation separately, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

An Abta spokesperson said: “We are aware of some cancellations – your rights will vary depending on whether you have booked a package holiday or the different elements of your holiday separately.”

Those who choose not to travel, rather than having their trip cancelled or postponed, may not necessarily be covered by their travel insurance policy .

Such policies usually only allow claims for cancellation in the event of serious illness of one of the travellers, a bereavement of the insured or a very close family member or an exceptionally long delay prior to departure.

Louise Clark, policy adviser at the Association of British Insurers, said the primary purpose of travel insurance is to protect holidaymakers in case they require emergency medical treatment overseas.

She added that travel insurance is “unlikely to provide cover if you’re unable to go outside on your holiday because of a wildfire”. However, some insurers do provide add-ons for customers at the time of purchase, which protect against natural disasters.

Holidaymakers are also warned that many package holiday operators charge customers all or at least 90% of the price paid if customers cancel at the last minute.

TUI issues ‘three hour’ warning to anyone flying from major UK airport

author image

Exterior view of the terminal building at Birmingham International Airport

For anyone planning a summer holiday  this year, you might want to reconsider which airport you’re flying from.

TUI has issued a warning to travellers jetting out from Birmingham airport, advising them to arrive at the airport three hours early to avoid disappointment.

And, if you’re catching a long-haul flight , the advice is to arrive four hours before take off.

The warning by the travel company comes amid works going on at Birmingham Airport until June.

The security hall is undergoing a £60,000,000 transformation to introduce brand new scanners which will change hand luggage rules for all passengers.

Once the update has been completed, you’ll be able to pass through security and leave your liquids and electronics in your carry-on bags.

Business people standing in queue at airport

The British government had set a deadline of June 1 for all airports to complete the upgrades, ahead of the 100ml rule being scrapped this summer.

‘We’d like to remind you to arrive at the airport with sufficient time before your flight,’ TUI said in a statement.

‘At the moment, we’re recommending giving yourself three hours for flights to Europe and Africa, and four hours for long-haul flights.

‘That way, you’ll have plenty of time to check in your luggage and make your way through the security queues.’

‘Arriving any earlier than this won’t mean you can check in or pass through security early.’

TUI also reminded passengers of their bag drop off system.

‘On that note, don’t forget that if your flight takes off before noon, you can drop your bags between 2pm and 9pm using our day-before bag drop, making your departure day easier. You can do this for all flights except those to the USA.’

Why does the 100ml liquid rule exist?

Tray With Personal Belongings And A Boarding pass On Roller Conveyors Table At The Airport

The liquid rules were introduced in 2006 due to a terror threat.

Terrorists had been poised to smuggle liquid explosives through security by disguising them as soft drinks.

They planned to carry the explosives aboard planes travelling from the United Kingdom to the United States and Canada.

As a result of the incident, unprecedented security measures were initially implemented at airports.

New rules introduced on August 10 2006 resulted in hundreds of cancelled flights, long delays and queues at UK airports.

What are the new rules for liquids when flying?

The days of chugging a bottle of water, desperately squinting at the labels of your toiletries and debating over whether lip balm is a liquid (generally it’s not) should be behind us very soon.

Up until now, unless your liquid items are bang on or below 100ml and crammed inside a small, clear plastic bag, you would have to bid farewell to them before going through security.

But Birmingham Airport, which handled 11,000,000 passengers last year, is set to become one of the first major British airports to scrap the 100ml rule from June 1 2024 – meanwhile other airports have delayed the launch, London Gatwick has set a new deadline of March 2025, while Manchester, East Midlands and Stanstead have also said their new scanners won’t be introduced until next year.

Two Businesswomen Walking Through Airport Terminal Together

Birmingham airport bosses have been installing scanners that use X-ray technology to create a 3D scan of the contents of a passenger’s bag.

Not only will passengers be able to bring in liquids of more than 100ml, but they’ll no longer have to remove large electronic devices such as laptops from their bags, as per current restrictions .

Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport, previously told Metro.co.uk : ‘Birmingham Airport has invested £60 million in a new security hall and scanning equipment.

‘From June 1, our customers will see the benefits of the new security systems as we roll them out, which will result in a quicker and easier pre-flight security screening process for our customers.

‘In the meantime, up until the 1st June date, our existing security restrictions remain in place.

Jet2, TUI, Thomas Cook, BA advice as Rhodes fire 'strands' British holidaymakers

The Foreign Office has updated its guidance while Jet2 has confirmed cancellations

People evacuate from Kiotari village, during a wildfire, on Rhodes island, Greece, 22 July 2023

British holidaymakers in Rhodes have reported being "stranded" at local schools and the airport after a wildfire forced some resorts to be evacuated. Thousands more travellers due to jet off there soon are now trying to get answers from their airlines and travel agents about whether or not their holiday can go ahead.

This morning (Sunday, July 23) major airline and package holiday provider Jet2 announced it has cancelled all flights and holidays which were due to fly out today, while TUI has said the "volatile" situation means it has cancelled flights until Tuesday at least. Thomas Cook has also now confirmed holiday cancellations in certain parts of Rhodes until July 31.

British tourists described scenes of turmoil as the five-day fire continues to rage, with power cuts causing chaos and an absence of information from travel agencies. One tourist said on social media: "If it wasn’t for Twitter I wouldn’t have a clue what is going on. Stranded in a high school. No reps, no luggage, no information."

In previous days the wildfire was confined to the island’s mountainous centre, but aided by winds, very high temperatures and dry conditions, it spread on Saturday towards the coast on the island’s central-eastern side. Fire service spokesman Yannis Artopios said on Saturday that more wildfires could break out as temperatures are set to reach 45C today.

Some airlines have been responding to passengers on Twitter, with their latest guidance listed below. This article will be updated as and when more airlines share statements on their websites or social media pages.

Are you from Bristol and currently in Rhodes? If it is safe to do so please email [email protected]

Last night Jet2 told a passenger: "We are aware of the fast-moving situation in Rhodes, and our in-resort teams are working to comply with the guidance of local authorities. The health, safety and well-being of our customers will always be our number one priority. We ask any customers in affected areas to follow the advice of the local authorities, or their hoteliers who will be acting under the advice of the authorities."

In an update this morning, it confirmed cancellations. A spokesperson told the Mirror : “We have cancelled all flights and holidays that are due to depart to Rhodes today (five flights in total). We will be contacting affected customers to update them, and to let them know that they will be provided with a full refund and the opportunity to rebook.

“We will fly those five aircraft to Rhodes with no customers onboard so that we can bring customers back to the UK on their scheduled flight.”

At 5am TUI responded to one passenger on Twitter saying: "We’re closely monitoring the wildfire situation in Rhodes & are aware of the hotels evacuated in the South of the island. Our resort teams are doing everything they can to support customers and we ask that they follow the advice of the local authorities and emergency services."

Late this morning it said in an update: "The situation in the Southern part of Rhodes remains volatile and challenging. Due to this and considering the impact on local communities being affected, TUI has decided to cancel all flights and booked holidays to Rhodes for departures up to and incl. Tue, 25 July."

An email sent to holidaymakers already in Rhodes added: "Due to some disruption with the local infrastructure, you may be experiencing some delays at the airport. The airport teams are working as quickly as possible to transfer our customers to their accommodation. We'd please ask for your patience and understanding at this time as there may be some delay in your airport transfer to your hotel.

"If you prefer to source your own transport to your hotel, you're able to do so and claim the cost back for this. Whilst a large number of our customers in Rhodes are continuing as normal with their holiday, we'd please remind all customers they should be following local advice at all times during their time away."

  • Thomas Cook

In a statement shared with PA on Saturday, a Thomas Cook spokesperson said: "We are monitoring closely the wildfires in Rhodes and are in touch with our customers who are on holiday there. Our teams are in regular contact with our holidaymakers on the island currently as well as those about to depart to discuss their options."

In a subsequent statement this afternoon, it confirmed it has cancelled all holidays to areas of Rhodes most affected by the wildfire until July 31. The travel agency announced it had been in touch will all customers due to travel to Kiotari and Lardos – the areas of the Greek island at most risk – to arrange “swift refunds”.

It has also offered full refunds to customers due to depart for other parts of the island on Sunday and Monday who wish to cancel.

British Airways

British Airways released a statement on Saturday evening to Sky news saying the company was "very concerned" about the situation. The statement added: "Customers currently in Rhodes who need to come home early can change their return flight free of charge. And anyone due to travel out from the UK in the next week can change their flight to a later date. We will of course keep the situation under review."

Airline Easyjet has come in for criticism after insisting on flying passengers out to Rhodes even as people face many hours of waits and traumatic evacuation journeys amid the major forest fires out there.

Easyjet took to Twitter to say: “We are currently operating as normal to Rhodes however we continue to closely monitor the situation. We advise customers travelling to and from Rhodes to check the status of their flights on Flight Tracker.

“@easyJetholidays is currently working to comply with requests of the local authorities, and is in contact with customers in resort to support them. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is our highest priority.

“Any customers who are booked to travel to or from Rhodes until 29 July can transfer for free to another date or can request a flight voucher for the value of their unused flights, by calling our Customer Services.”

In an updates statement, posted to Twitter at around 9pm tonight (July 23), EasyJet said it will be running two repatriation flights tomorrow from Rhodes to Gatwick in addition to its scheduled flights. There will be another repatriation flight on Tuesday.

The full statement said: "We know the situation for many currently in Rhodes is very difficult. The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our highest priority and we are doing all we can to assist customers in affected areas.

"We will be operating two repatriation flights tomorrow from Rhodes to Gatwick in addition to our scheduled flights. We will also operate a further repatriation flight on Tuesday.

"Any easyJet flight-only customers who have been evacuated from their hotel and are currently at the airport should contact easyJet’s airport staff. Any customers from affected areas wishing to travel back early can contact easyJet’s Customer Services team on our dedicated line for customers in Rhodes - 44 (0) 330 5515147 (open 7am-11pm BST or 9am-1am EEST)

"Other flight only customers due to travel to and from Rhodes over the coming days should continue to check the status of their flights at http://easyjet.com/en/flight-tracker… . If you are booked to travel to or from Rhodes before the 29th of July, our flights are still operating. However, if you would like to change your plans, then you will be able to transfer your flight to another date or can request a flight voucher for the value of your unused flights, by calling easyJet Customer Services.

"Our tour operator, easyJet holidays is currently working to comply with requests of the local authorities and is in contact with customers in resort to support them.

"easyJet holidays have sadly had to cancel easyJet holidays packages departing up to and including Tuesday 25 July, and customers will receive a full refund. We are proactively contacting easyJet holidays customers due to travel up to and including Saturday 29 July to confirm their options."

What is the official advice?

The Foreign Office travel advice to British travellers has been updated and now states: "Extreme temperatures are affecting many areas of Greece and there are a number of active wildfires including in Rhodes. If you are a British national affected by wildfires in Rhodes near Kiotari, Pefkoi, Lindos and the surrounding area, please follow the guidance from the emergency services. Call the Greek Emergency Services on 112 if you are in immediate danger.

"The Greek government has established a Crisis Management Unit to respond to the situation in Rhodes. They can be contacted on +30 210 368 1730. For 24/7 British consular assistance, call +4420 7008 5000.

"If you are planning to travel to Rhodes, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel that the area you plan to visit is not impacted by the current wildfires."

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted: “The safety of British Nationals is our top priority. I encourage those in Rhodes, and those with family and friends there, to continue checking FCDO travel advice for updates.”

Is It Safe in Moscow?

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.
