ABOUT ALICE COOPER:  Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. Alice Cooper brings his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Twenty-plus years into the new millennium, Cooper is always very productive and busy, touring worldwide year-in and year-out while also writing, recording and working on his nightly syndicated radio show. In 2023, Cooper also released his 22nd solo and 29th studio album, Road, via earMUSIC.

Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper brought the freaks out in Kansas City

The freaks were out in full force on Friday night as Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper brought their headlining tour to Azura Amphitheater. No, we’re not in the business of name calling. This was the “Freaks on Parade” tour. It was a hard rock, metal, and industrial fan’s  dream show, thanks to the lineup rounding out with Ministry and Filter. Donning their best steampunk attire, the freaks fanbase showed up in high (gnarly) fashion for the night, which delivered a good old fashioned rock show… you know, the kind where guitarists threw their picks at fans every other minute.

But it went from raining guitar picks to raining actual water when the rain moved in (this is Kansas, so we’ll call this a modest rain shower). Rob Zombie brought the fire to combat the water thanks to his heavy pyro onstage. It felt like he had a platform for every type of song, constantly jumping between the elevated surfaces and proving that he’s an absolutely agile and enigmatic performer. Rob Zombie is, without a doubt, someone you can’t take your eyes off of.

Alice Cooper’s set was like watching a Spirit Halloween store come to life. He burst out of a giant banner that read “BANNED IN KANSAS! ALICE COOPER!” and spent the night diving into what he’s best at: heavy theatrics. What a show! He twirled a baton/cane/sword half the time, donned a handful of different top hats, wore a damn snake around his neck , and was even beheaded at one point (his wife Sheryl cosplayed as Marie Antoinette and plucked his “head” from the guillotine). Did we mention the giant, terrifying Frankenstein puppet that was nearly as tall as the stage? (Guess which song that was on.) We’ll have nightmares for WEEKS.

It’s worth mentioning that guitarist Nita Strauss (Vinita Sandhya Strauss) absolutely stole the show. Imagine how good you have to be at guitar to get the audience to take their eyes off the highly theatrical and exciting Alice Cooper. This woman had the whole damn place eating out of the palm of her hand (when it wasn’t shredding). We’re not worthy!

Ministry can work a crowd like no other. When they came on, it felt like watching a human magnet draw in the crowd as close as possible to the stage. They debuted a new single “Goddamn White Trash” while still satisfying the crowd with as many of their hits as possible crammed into a 40-minute set.

Filter opened the night off with songs off their latest album,  The Algorithm . They had fantastic energy and momentum, even if they did have to fight off an overzealous fog machine.

Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson bring ‘Hell Never Dies’ Tour to Kansas City

Story & Photos by Andy Lyons , Editor-in-Chief

When Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson announced a third co-headlining tour of the “Twins of Evil,” fans across North America rejoiced. The six-week tour is covering 24 dates across the continent with six shows in Canada – including a stop at Providence Medical Center Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kan., Wednesday night.

Fans packed the venue affectionately known as Sandstone for two living legends despite temperatures nearing 100 degrees. Officials allowed fans to bring in bottles of water up to a liter in size – without their lids of course – and security guards consistently gave water to fans along the rail throughout the show.

From atop a huge dais, Manson greeted the crowd with his arms as wide as his smile. Taking the stage at sunset, he was extremely amped up and the crowd up front echoed his energy. Early in his set, he hopped down into the security barrier and leaned over the rail into the crowd. As he made his way back to the stage he was helped by security guards and seemed as if he was very stiff – it’s obvious his injuries from a stage prop falling on him nearly two years are still bothering him, but it was very cool of Manson to get up close and personal with his fans.

Midway through Manson’s set, the band played the opening guitar riff of “If I Was Your Vampire” and the crowd erupted. They played a minute or two of the track before going into “Say10,” during which Manson brought out his custom butcher knife-shaped microphone.

Manson closed his set with “The Beautiful People,” played the chugging riff on a guitar with a drumstick before going into the song. It wasn’t long before he hopped back into the security barrier and got on the rail, drawing scores of high fives and plenty of women flashing him for his attention. As the song was coming to an end the group dropped the music as the crowd chanted “The Beautiful People… The Beautiful People.”

As they finished, Manson took his time moving down the barrier and high fiving fans. He stopped and made it a point to high five a little boy who was maybe 8 years old. He asked him a question and held the microphone up to the boy, who said “yeah,” then yelled “I love you Marilyn!” drawing a huge applause from the crowd.

The lights dimmed and the crowd roared for Zombie as “Kansas City” by Wilbert Harrison played over the PA. The lights kicked up as he hit the stage with guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D, and drummer Ginger Fish, wasting no time going into opening track “Dead City Radio and the New Gods of Supertown.”

Late in the set, a cool breeze brought the temperature down to around 80 degrees as John 5 took the stage to play a solo that included Led Zepplin’s “Heartbreaker.” The screens around the stage displayed flames and the number 5. As John 5 paced back and forth across the risers at stage front, Zombie took off into the crowd with a security detail and photographer Rob Fenn in tow and would stop throughout highlighting members of the crowd with a flashlight.

The solo melted into “Thunder Kiss ’65,” and Zombie’s visuals kept fans guessing. A giant devil prop joined the group on stage as the crowd clapped in unison to the beat of the song. There were more surprises as well – the group finished and played a snippet of Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” and then played a cover of “Helter Skelter” by The Beatles.

Palaye Royale kicked off the show with the sun beating down with a cover of “I Wanna Be Your Dog” by Iggy Pop before launching into a high energy set that got the mood right in the pit. Despite sweating bullets, the group put on a great set that perfectly set up the Twins of Evil.

Manson and Zombie played setlists that could be greatest hits albums. Manson seemed to really enjoy performing in front of the KC crowd and he consistently chatted to them. Taking the time to pull cheers from each direction individually and tossing high fives along the rail showed a big change in attitude from the famously grumpy rocker.

Zombie always brings a high energy set full of visuals, both screens and props. His shows turn into singalongs with the crowd and Wednesday night was no different. While his setlist becomes predictable, Zombie and his band work the crowd into a frenzy and always make for a great show.

I had tickets 3 other times to see Rob since 1994. Something always happened and I didn't get to the shows. Unfortunately he didn't live up to my expectations. His vocals were not great and the guitarist seemed a little off as well. THe stage show and videos were good. He was not bad but he wasn't as good as expected, and playing after Korn had a killer show just made him look worse. 22 years of waiting and all I can do is :(

Rob Zombie killed yet another show last night. Every time I see his show it is a that my voice will be gone. What make his concerts even better for me is taking my son to his shows. I think he was hooked the from the start of his very first zombie concert. Pop Evil did a great job warming up the crowd, and Disturbed put on such a great concert, but there is a good reason I have been a Zombie fan since 1992. Rob Zombie has to be on of the great live concert performers of all time. If you haven't had a chance to see him perform treat yourself to a great show.

Rob Zombie, Korn Unite for Co-Headlining Summer Tour

By Ryan Reed

Rob Zombie  and Korn  have announced a co-headlining North American tour, launching July 19th in Englewood, Colorado. The 26-date trek will continue throughout July and August, concluding September 3rd in Bristow, Virginia.

Tickets go on sale March 11th via Live Nation. Select dates are featured in a “Ticket to Rock” offer, which allows fans to access three shows – also including Slipknot/Marilyn Manson and Disturbed/Breaking Benjamin – with a single pass. Zombie’s joint Korn shows will follow a run of co-headlining dates with Disturbed, promoting Zombie’s sixth studio album, The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser , out April 29th via UMe/T-Boy Records.

Zombie recently released a lyric video for lead single “Well, Everybody’s Fucking in a U.F.O.,” which features footage of dancing women and sex education classes.

Last month, the Numero Group record label announced a 39-track box set, It Came From N.Y.C. , reviving out-of-print material from Zombie’s former band White Zombie. The package, remastered by guitarist J. Yuenger, spans the band’s discography from 1985 seven-inch “Gods on Voodoo Moon” to 1989 EP  God of Thunder , along with six previously unissued tracks.

Korn issued their 11th studio album, The Paradigm Shift , in 2013. The band is reportedly at work on a follow-up; last year, guitarist Brian “Head” Welch described their new material  as “pretty danged heavy.”

Godsmack And Rob Zombie Team Up For 25-Date U.S. Tour

rob zombie tour kansas city

It's been little more than a month since the release of Godsmack's latest studio outing, and it's going to be another three months before the New England hard rock collective's American fans get a chance to experience this new material in a live setting.

While most rockers chase the release of a record with a healthy dose of U.S. touring, the Sully Erna-led outfit didn't -- and won't in the coming weeks. But before fall begins, Godsmack will, at long last, hit the road for a 25-date U.S. trek that's set to launch August 25 in Dallas -- and they'll be bringing rocker/horror king/road warrior Rob Zombie along for the ride.

Godsmack -- whose fourth LP, IV, debuted atop Billboard 's album sales chart early last month (see [article id="1519736"]"Godsmack Finishing Up 'Killer' Fourth LP, Working On Football Theme"[/article]) -- have forged an alliance with Zombie, and the two acts will be traveling the nation for a two-month stretch. The tour's finale is set for October 1 in Concord, California. Tickets for the entire tour go on sale Saturday through Ticketmaster.

Drummer Shannon Larkin said this fall tour is Godsmack's way of thanking its fans for being so loyal -- and generous with their dough.

"Debuting at #1 was a testament to our fanbase," he said. "They ran out and bought the album the first week and made us #1, which, you know, we will give back to them this fall when we come back on tour. We'll give back to crowd for going out and buying our record and making us #1. We're bringing the biggest show we've ever brought to America, and we're going to be bringing Rob Zombie out with us. So, it's going to be an amazing thing. Hopefully, we can return the love to our rabid fanbase, and so we have to bring a great show to these people."

In a statement, Erna said that the band's "fans should expect the biggest Godsmack spectacle yet. This tour will be a virtual, visual, and aural circus. Expect the unexpected when we hit your town." According to a press release, Zombie will be setting the stage during each stop on the tour, turning the venue "into a funhouse of mystery and madness as creatures walk the stage of pyrotechnics, smoke, and mirrors. This is a no-holds barred show so hold on for the ride."

Larkin said Godsmack will spend much of this summer concocting a worthy set list, one that'll satisfy the fans who've been with them since the beginning as well as those who've just discovered the 'Smack.

"With the band having -- what, 13 top 10 rock hits? -- we want to play all the hits, of course, but you don't want it to be just all radio songs," Larkin said. "You want to put some deep cuts on there, and you want to get some songs from the new record that we're so attached to and love so much, because it's fresh and new to us" -- like the first single, "Speak" (see [article id="1527893"]"Godsmack Burn Rubber In Rock-And-Roll-Style 'Bling Video' "[/article]), and the forthcoming second single, "Shine Down." "It's hard to cram all this stuff into one set, so we're being very meticulous about picking our set list," Larkin explained. "We don't want to be that band that plays too long either, and we're thinking of maybe having multiple set lists. There are a good 10 songs we have to play every night -- "Voodoo," the staples of the set."

The drummer said that Godsmack jumped at the chance to tour this fall with Zombie: "As soon as it was Rob Zombie, we were sold, because he's not only an icon in rock but I'm such a huge fan of horror movies, and his films are just amazing."

This summer, in addition to working on his numerous film projects (see [article id="1533520"]"Rob Zombie Resurrecting Michael Myers For New 'Halloween,' "[/article]), Zombie will be heading out with thrash metal icons Anthrax for the "American Witch" tour (see [article id="1531957"]"Rob Zombie Teaming With Anthrax For North American 'Witch' Hunt"[/article]), which kicks off June 30 in El Paso, Texas, with dates running through August 4 in Salem, Oregon. Zombie -- whose Educated Horses debuted at #5 on Billboard 's chart in April -- will be accompanied by a backing band featuring former Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5, bassist Matt "Piggy D" Montgomery, and drummer Tommy Clufetos.
