The royal family has been visiting the United States for over 80 years now, touching lives in states across the nation along the way. While official tours—and even impromptu visits—come with a range of important duties, they typically also allow for public-facing moments of downtime and celebrity-studded fun. From King George VI and the future Queen Mother's very first hot dog to Prince Charles's date with Tricia Nixon, these photos show just how many memories have been made in the United States. With Prince William visiting in New York City this week for the Earthshot Prize Summit, there's no better time to look back at the best royal visits to the U.S. throughout history.

During her seven-decade reign, Queen Elizabeth II visited more than two dozen cities across the United States. She chatted with Girl Scouts, football players, presidents and Frank Sinatra . She cheered on race horses in Kentucky. She requested a ham sandwich with the crust removed in Texas. She sported a tweed skirt-suit in Yosemite National Park.

Wherever England’s longest-serving monarch went, photographers followed, capturing generations of Americans in the throes of Royal fever (and more than a few signature handbags ).

Prince and Princess of Wales to Visit Boston as the Royal Family Recasts Itself

William and Catherine will announce the winners of awards for work on the environment. But their visit is weighted with additional significance.

royal visits to united states

By Remy Tumin

On its face, the visit by William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales, to Boston this week is typical of the British royal family’s philanthropic work.

The couple will present awards given out by the Earthshot Prize , an organization founded by William to help entrepreneurs with solutions to climate change and environmental issues.

But the visit is weighted with extra significance as William and Kate visit the United States for the first time in eight years, a time spanning a swell of change for the royal family as it tries to rebrand itself as a modern monarchy.

It will be the first visit by the royal couple to the United States since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September; the first time they touch U.S. soil since Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, left Britain for a more private life in California; the first time they are greeted by an American public that has a deeper understanding of royal life, thanks in part to Netflix’s “The Crown.”

“This is them trying to establish who they are in a more pared-down, streamlined monarchy,” said Arianne J. Chernock, a history professor at Boston University and a scholar of modern Britain. “This is a more updated, modernized family that they want to represent.”

Dr. Chernock said the Earthshot Prize, a cause that the royal family has embraced in recent years , is a way for the prince and princess to explore how they can align themselves with “core, weighty issues and maintain a sense of relevance, as well as a connection with their subjects and global population to justify their existence.”

“It’s a tall task,” she added.

To do that, the couple, who are to arrive on Wednesday, have largely limited the scope of their itinerary to climate issues and social change. Mayor Michelle Wu will meet William and Kate for a welcome event at City Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Caroline Kennedy, the ambassador to Australia and the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, will also greet them.

On Thursday, the couple will visit Greentown Labs, an incubator for start-ups tackling climate issues, and Roca, a nonprofit organization that works with young people in preventing incarceration. On Friday, the prince will visit the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, and the princess will visit the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University.

The main focus will be on the Earthshot Prize on Friday night. Five entrepreneurs will each receive 1 million pounds, or about $1.2 million, to continue their work in one of five categories: the restoration and protection of nature; air cleanliness; ocean revival; waste-free living; and climate action. The prize’s name is inspired by Kennedy’s “moonshot” initiative , which was announced in 1962 and put men on the moon for the first time in 1969. William announced the 15 finalists for the prize in early November.

“This is his Super Bowl moment of the year,” said Karen Pierce, the British ambassador to the United States, “and he uses it to shine the light on some of the most impactful projects that are doing amazing things around the world to help save the planet.”

Compared with a traditional royal tour, Ms. Pierce said, this visit is “much more focused on the work being done in climate change.” The prince and princess are “very natural people,” she said. “They want to meet ordinary people who are working hard for their communities.”

Ms. Pierce said the idea to announce the prize winners in Boston was twofold. This year is the 60th anniversary of Kennedy’s moonshot goal, and the event will also honor “the tremendous work” Boston has accomplished in battling climate change.

Boston’s historical connection to Britain is not lost on anyone, she added.

In fact, dating to the American Revolution, “Americans have never lost their fascination with the royal family,” Dr. Chernock said.

“You can see some of that royalism in America in the fact that we have created our own royalties and dynasties — whether it’s the Kennedys or the Bushes,” she said. “There is still this fascination with inheritance and family dynasty.”

That makes Boston, a cradle of the American Revolution and home to the Kennedys, “fertile ground for a royal visit,” she said. “It’s really the perfect city for them.”

William and Kate’s visit is the first major one to Boston by British royals in recent times. The one with the most fanfare occurred in 1976, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited for the U.S. bicentennial . Among their stops was a service at the Old North Church in Boston.

The Rev. Dr. Matthew Cadwell, the current vicar of church, said that “there’s enthusiasm and excitement,” especially among congregants who still remember the queen’s visit.

William and Kate’s last trip abroad together was a turbulent tour of the Caribbean in March, one filled with gaffes, miscues and renewed calls for reparations for Britain’s role in the slave trade. Dr. Chernock said that trip had been “ill conceived” and that this trip would probably be much more carefully managed and calculated.

“It will be telling to see how they present themselves, the kinds of comments they make to the public — have they accepted or heard some of the criticisms?” Dr. Chernock said. The couple has been “quite good at being human,” she said, and at tackling difficult issues, like climate change and mental health, that “they do genuinely care about.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the surname of Britain’s ambassador to the United States. She is Karen Pierce, not Price. It also referred incorrectly to previous visits to Boston by members of the British royal family. While Queen Elizabeth II toured the city in 1976, that was not the last visit. Other members of the family have been there since.

The first member of the British royal family to visit the United States, King Edward VII, son of Queen Victoria, came to Mount Vernon on October 5, 1860 when he was still known as Albert Edward, Prince of Wales.

The welcoming party included U.S. President Buchanan, U.S. Supreme Court judges, and members of the U.S. Congress. During his visit, the Prince consented to plant a small buckeye tree in front of Washington’s Tomb  in commemoration of the historic visit.

The son of Queen Victoria, Prince Arthur (later known as the Duke of Connaught) arrived on the estate in 1869, four years after the conclusion of the American Civil War.

The next British royal to travel to Mount Vernon was Princess Aribert (Princess Marie Louise of Schleweswig-Holstein), a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, in 1900. She was accompanied by the U.S. Secretary of State, John Hay.

According to Colonel Harrison Howell Dodge, the Director of Mount Vernon from 1885-1937, Princess Aribert “expressed much interest and pleasure in her visit and commented most favorably on the beauty of the place, saying that America owed a great debt to the devoted Ladies who had preserved this historic spot to their country." After the First World War, while he was still known as the Prince of Wales, King Edward VIII (later known as the Duke of Windsor) arrived at Mount Vernon by automobile on November 13, 1919, accompanied by U.S. Vice President Marshall. Following the tradition introduced by King Edward VII, the Prince planted a small English yew tree near Washington’s Tomb .

On the eve of the Second World War, King George VI, brother of King Edward VIII and father of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was a guest at Mount Vernon on a sweltering summer’s day on June 9, 1939. Arriving on President Franklin Roosevelt’s yacht, the King and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, were accompanied by the President and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, members of the President’s Cabinet and their wives, officials of the British Embassy, as well as other noted guests. As they disembarked, they were greeted by the Regent of Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Mrs. Horace Mann Towner and the director of Mount Vernon, Charles Cecil Wall, as well as twenty-four Vice Regents, or board members, of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. The King was presented with a set of The Diaries of George Washington , which “was received with special gratitude and appreciation." (2)

Prince William, Kate head to Boston: Everything to know about the couple's 1st US trip in 8 years

William and Kate will attend several events during their three days in Boston.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are coming to America.

Prince William and Kate will travel to Boston this week, marking their first visit to the United States since 2014, when they visited New York City and famously shook hands with Beyoncé and Jay-Z at a Brooklyn Nets game.

The royals will arrive in Boston on Wednesday, two days ahead of the second annual awards ceremony for the Earthshot Prize, an initiative William launched in 2019 to create solutions for environmental problems.

Their itinerary in the city includes everything from meeting Caroline Kennedy to visiting Harvard University.

The visit to Boston is William and Kate's first overseas trip since the death of William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September, and their first overseas trip since taking on the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales .

"TRHs are both excited for their first international trip since taking on their news roles as Prince and Princess of Wales," a Kensington Palace spokesperson told ABC News. "Both appreciate the history associated to the titles but understandably want to look to the future and pave their own paths."

The White House and Queen Elizabeth II

The White House and Queen Elizabeth II shared a long history of friendship and diplomacy. Queen Elizabeth II’s reign spanned 14 presidential administrations.

  • Royal Visit, 1951: Princess Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Washington, D.C. on October 31, 1951. She stayed at Blair House with President Harry S. Truman and his family, as the White House was under major renovation (1948-1952). During the visit, they gave the president a seventeenth-century trumeau on behalf of King George VI of Great Britain, which has historically hung above the mantel in Queens’ Bedroom on the Second Floor.
  • Royal Visit, 1957: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Washington, D.C. on October 17, 1957. They stayed with President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower at the White House, and Queen Elizabeth II stayed in the Rose Bedroom while Prince Philip stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom. The visit was in part to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Despite inclement weather, large crowds lined the streets to greet the Queen as she traveled by motorcade from Washington National Airport to the White House, and several hundred onlookers pressed against the White House fence hoping for a closer view. After visiting Arlington National Cemetery to lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice, the British guests attended a State Dinner at the White House that evening.
  • Bicentennial Royal Visit, 1976: During the American Bicentennial of 1975-1976, Queen Elizabeth II visited the United States and the White House on a goodwill tour. During this visit, the royal couple were hosted by President Gerald Ford and First Lady Betty Ford for a State Dinner on July 7, 1976, in the Rose Garden. Queen Elizabeth II presented President Ford with a soup tureen that featured a painted image of the White House and Independence Hall. This and other gifts from the Royal Family to the United States were later put on exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution.
  • Royal Visit, 1983: President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at Rancho Del Cielo, their Santa Barbara home in the Santa Ynez mountains of California. The royal guests braved a California rainstorm to have lunch with the first couple. While the weather reminded accompanying British journalists of “Scotland on a foul day,” the lunch was more aligned with the region’s cuisine, featuring enchiladas, chiles rellenos, refried beans, tacos, rice, and guacamole. On March 3, 1983, President Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan hosted an Official Dinner for Queen Elizabeth II in San Francisco at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum.
  • Royal Visit, 1991: President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip for a State Dinner on May 14, 1991. During the visit, the queen also planted a commemorative tree, a Little-Leaf Linden, on the South Lawn.
  • Royal Visit, 2007: President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when she visited the United States and the White House in 2007. This visit, similar to her visit in 1957, celebrated the 400th anniversary of the English settlement of Jamestown, Virginia. On May 7, 2007, the royal couple attended an elegant white-tie State Dinner hosted in their honor. President Bush invited that year’s winning Kentucky Derby jockey Calvin Borel, as the Queen is a renowned racing fan, and owns and breeds racehorses. During her stay, she also visited the World War II Memorial with President Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush—a World War II veteran.

About the White House Historical Association

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy envisioned a restored White House that conveyed a sense of history through its decorative and fine arts. She sought to inspire Americans, especially children, to explore and engage with American history and its presidents. In 1961, the nonprofit, nonpartisan White House Historical Association was established to support her vision to preserve and share the Executive Mansion’s legacy for generations to come. Supported entirely by private resources, the Association’s mission is to assist in the preservation of the state and public rooms, fund acquisitions for the White House permanent collection, and educate the public on the history of the White House. Since its founding, the Association has given more than $115 million to the White House in fulfillment of its mission.

Prince William and Kate's Royal Visit to Boston: Here's Everything We Know

The prince and princess of wales will arrive in the city on wednesday and depart on friday, by marc fortier • published november 29, 2022 • updated on november 29, 2022 at 11:49 pm.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will be looking to focus attention on their Earthshot Prize for environmental innovators when they make their first visit to the United States in eight years this week , a trip clouded by tensions with William’s brother, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan, who have criticized Britain’s royal family in the American media.

William and his wife, Kate Middleton, will travel to Boston on Wednesday for three days of public engagements before announcing the prize winners on Friday in a ceremony headlined by pop star Billie Eilish.

Boston, birthplace of John F. Kennedy, was chosen to host the second annual prize ceremony because the late president’s 1962 “moonshot” speech inspired the prince and his partners to set a similar goal for finding solutions to climate change and other environmental problems by 2030. The first Earthshot Prizes were awarded last year in London just before the U.K. hosted the COP26 climate conference.

Here's everything you need to know about this week's royal visit:

What Is the Earthshot Prize?

The Earthshot prize was founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2020. It was inspired by and with a name echoing President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to America to land a man on the moon by that decade’s end, and aims to “discover and scale the best solutions to help repair our planet within the next decade,” according to a release.

Earthshot offers 1 million pounds ($1.2 million) in prize money to the winners of five separate categories: nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination and climate change. The winners and all 15 finalists also receive help in expanding their projects to meet global demand.

Among the finalists is a startup from Kenya that aims to provide cleaner-burning stoves to make cooking safer and reduce indoor air pollution. It was the brainchild of Charlot Magayi, who grew up in one of Nairobi’s largest slums and sold charcoal for fuel.

When her daughter was severely burned by a charcoal-fired stove in 2012, she developed a stove that uses a safer fuel made from a combination of charcoal, wood and sugarcane. The stoves cut costs for users, reduce toxic emissions and lower the risk of burns, Magayi says.

Other finalists include Fleather, a project in India that creates an alternative to leather out of floral waste; Hutan, an effort to protect orangutans in Malaysia; and SeaForester, which seeks to restore kelp forests that capture carbon and promote biodiversity.

The winners will be announced Friday at Boston’s MGM Music Hall as part of a glitzy show headlined by numerous celebrities. The ceremony will be broadcast Sunday on the BBC in the U.K., PBS in the U.S. and Multichoice across Africa.

Hollywood Descends on Boston

Numerous A-list celebrities are headed to Boston this week to join the Prince and Princess of Wales at the Earthshot Prize Awards.

Billie Eilish is among the singers who will take the stage at the MGM Music Hall in Fenway on Friday for the awards show, at which five people will receive $1 million for their environmental projects. Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek will be presenting one of the awards, along with Princess Catherine and other stars.

The awards show will be co-hosted by actor Daniel Dae Kim and British TV presenter Clara Amfo, which won't air in the U.S. until Monday.

Performing along with Eilish and her brother, Finneas, will be Annie Lennox, Chloe x Halle and Ellie Goulding, according to a news release. Other celebrities presenting awards include actors Catherine O’Hara and Shailene Woodley.

Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist and documentary filmmaker behind shows like "Planet Earth," will appear in the ceremony, and Prince William will give a speech closing out the show.

Royal Drama?

As much as the royals try to focus on the prize, William is likely to face questions about Harry and Meghan, who have criticized the royal family for racism and insensitive treatment in interviews with Oprah Winfrey and other U.S. media. The Netflix series “The Crown” has also resurrected some of the more troubled times of the House of Windsor just as the royal family tries to show that it remains relevant in modern, multicultural Britain following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“You could say that the royal family, particularly as far as America is concerned, have had a bit of a bumpy ride of late,” said Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine. “They’ve come in for huge amounts of criticism on the back of ‘The Crown’ and also the Oprah Winfrey interview, which has not particularly reflected well on the House of Windsor, so I think it’s a good opportunity whilst they’re in the U.S. … to sort of redress the balance if at all possible.’’

What Do the Royals Have Planned While in Boston?

Whatever those efforts are, they will take place in and around Boston, where William and Kate will remain for their entire visit.

The royal couple will keep the focus on environmental issues, meeting with local organizations responding to rising sea levels in Boston and visiting Greentown Labs in Somerville, an incubator hub where local entrepreneurs are working on projects to combat climate change.

But they will also address broader issues, using their star power to highlight the work of Chelsea's Roca Inc., which tries to improve the lives of young people by addressing issues such as racism, poverty and incarceration. They will also visit Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, a leader on research into the long-term impact of early childhood experiences. The Harvard Center has a long relationship with The Royal Foundation and The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

William and Kate will also meet with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu at an event that is open to the public at City Hall Plaza and visit the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and Museum with the late president’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy.

“The prince and princess are looking forward to spending time in Boston, and to learning more about the issues that are affecting local people, as well as to celebrating the incredible climate solutions that will be spotlighted through the Earthshot Prize,” their Kensington Palace office said in a statement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

royal visits to united states

June 7 - 12, 1939

When Franklin Roosevelt invited Great Britain's King George VI for a visit to the United States, the significance of the invitation did not go unnoticed. No reigning British Monarch had ever set foot on American soil, not even in colonial times. Ever since the Revolutionary War the United States and Great Britain oftentimes experienced tense relations, but Roosevelt's invitation to the King carried great significance in the history of Anglo-American relations because it signified the dawn of a new era in American and British cooperation.

With Europe poised on the brink of war, Franklin Roosevelt realized the necessity of fostering closer ties between the two democracies. Roosevelt believed so strongly in the need for cooperation that he pursued this change in foreign policy at the risk of losing domestic support from the very strong isolationist and anti-British segments of the electorate.

FDR planned every minute detail of the visit to ensure the King's success in winning over the sympathy and support of the American people. Indeed, his efforts paid off; King George VI's visit to the United States became a key component in developing a stronger political and social alliance between the U.S. and Great Britain.

Map showing the regions visited by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939

Washington D.C. and New York City

Americans heartily welcomed the British royalty with thunderous applause and adulation when the King and Queen arrived in Washington on June 8, 1939. Crowds lined the streets for a chance to glimpse the King and Queen as they traveled throughout the city. In Washington, the couple was treated to all the formalities one would expect from a State Visit. There was an afternoon reception at the British Embassy, followed by a formal evening of dining and musical entertainment at the White House.

On their second day, the King and Queen took in the sights of DC as they boarded the presidential yacht and sailed down the Potomac River to George Washington's Mount Vernon and then motored to the Fort Hunt CCC camp and to Arlington Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

1939 British Royal Visit - DC and NYC

Hyde Park, New York

After two days in Washington, the tone of the royal couple's visit transformed from formal to informal as they accompanied the Roosevelts to their home in Hyde Park, New York. The King and Queen's stay in Hyde Park illustrated to the American people that although they were Royalty, they also enjoyed the simpler things in life. In contrast to the formal State Dinner at the White House, dinner at the Roosevelt's Home "Springwood" was described to the press as a casual dinner between the two families; their evening entertainment was simple conversation, unfettered by formalities.

Even more relaxing and informal was the following day's event - a picnic. FDR brought the couple to his new hilltop retreat, Top Cottage, on the eastern portion of his estate for an old-fashioned, American-style picnic. Much to the horror of FDR's mother Sara Roosevelt, the King and Queen of England were served hot dogs on the front porch of the cottage. Although the press made a great deal about the hot dogs (the picnic made the front page of the New York Times), the menu also included more delicate fare fit for a King and Queen.

1939 Royal Visit - Hyde Park, NY

The royal couple delighted in their Hyde Park experience. In a letter to Queen Mary, her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth wrote: "They are such a charming and united family and living so like English people when they come to their country house." Their departure was emotional; a large crowd gathered at the small Hyde Park train station to wish the couple luck as they returned to an uncertain and perilous world on the verge of war.

Although the visit appeared to be purely a social affair, interspersed with the pomp and circumstance were serious discussions between the President and the King about the political and military situation in Europe. During this short visit their discussions gave way to policies such as the "destroyers for bases" deal and the decision to provide long-range U.S. Navy patrols in support of the Royal Navy's convoy escort groups during the Battle of the Atlantic.

More importantly to Franklin Roosevelt, however, was that this visit changed the perceptions of the American people, which in turn allowed him to do more for Britain. When Great Britain declared war on Germany three months later, Americans, due in no small part to the King and Queen's visit, sympathized with United Kingdom's plight; Britons were no longer strangers or the evil colonial rulers from the past but familiar friends and relatives with whom Americans could identify. As Eleanor Roosevelt's May 1940 letter to Queen Elizabeth illustrates (below), a new understanding and desire for cooperation, on both sides, was forged:

Eleanor Roosevelt to Queen Elizabeth

[Transcript of letter:]

Dear Queen Elizabeth

Ever since England was forced into the war I have wanted to write and tell you how constantly you and the King are in my thoughts.

Since meeting you, I think I can understand a little better what a weight of sorrow and anxiety must be yours.

We can but pray for a just peace and my warm sympathy is with you.

Sincerely yours, (Signed) Eleanor Roosevelt

King George VI becomes the first British monarch to visit the U.S.

royal visits to united states

King George VI becomes the first reigning British monarch to visit the United States when he and his wife, Elizabeth, cross the Canadian-U.S. border to Niagara Falls , New York. The royal couple subsequently visited New York City and Washington, D.C., where they called for a greater U.S. role in resolving the crisis in Europe. On June 12, they returned to Canada, where they embarked on their voyage home.

George, who studied at Dartmouth Naval College and served in World War I , ascended to the throne after his elder brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated on December 11, 1936. Edward, who was the first English monarch to voluntarily relinquish the English throne, agreed to give up his title in the face of widespread criticism of his desire to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson , an American divorcee.

During World War II , King George worked to keep up British morale by visiting bombed areas and touring war zones. George and Elizabeth also remained in bomb-damaged Buckingham Palace during the war, shunning the relative safety of the countryside, and George made a series of important morale-boosting radio broadcasts, for which he overcame a speech impediment.

After the war, the royal family visited South Africa, but a planned tour of Australia and New Zealand had to be postponed indefinitely when the king fell ill in 1949. Despite his illness, he continued to perform state duties until his death in 1952. He was succeeded by his first-born daughter, who was crowned Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953.

Royal visits to the united states, 1939.

Royals from around the World were in the United States around this time 80 years ago, officially they were there to attend the 1939 New York World’s Fair, but there was a mission to forge greater ties with the American government and President Roosevelt ahead of the start of the inevitable Second World War. These relationships proved instrumental during the War,

The most high-profile visit was that of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, who became the first reigning British Monarchs to visit the United States, after their Tour of Canada . The five day trip included visits to Mount Vernon, the New York World’s Fair, Dinner at the President’s estate at Hyde Park, where they were served hotdogs, smoked turkey, and strawberry shortcake (fictionalized in the film Hyde Park on Hudson) and a Garden Party at the British Embassy. A strong bond was forged between the King and Queen and the President and First Lady during the tour, which had major significance in the relations between the United States and the United Kingdom during the War.

Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway undertook an extensive ten-week tour of the United States in the Spring and Summer of 1939, developing a long-lasting friendship with President Roosevelt, that proved to be of great significance. They started their Tour in New York, visiting the Norwegian Pavilion at the World Fair, meeting the President at Hyde Park, and visiting him again at the White House. They also visited Virginia, Chicago, and Milwaukee . There were many Dinners and Banquets, for which the Crown Princess wore the  Vasa Tiara , Queen Sophia’s Diamond Bracelet Bandeau , and  Princess Ingeborg’s Boucheron Tiara . After the Nazi invasion of Norway in April 1940 forced the Royal Family into exile, Crown Princess Märtha accepted President Roosevelt’s invitation and travelled to America with her children, remaining in Washington, D.C. for the duration of the war, where her close friendship with the Presidential couple worked to promote Norwegian interests , and is the subject of an upcoming TV series.

Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Ingrid of Denmark started their Tour in California, visiting San Francisco, where they were greeted by over 300 Danish Americans, and Los Angeles, before moving on to Chicago and then New York, where they attended the World Fair and met President Roosevelt. They also attended Banquets in Chicago and New York (for which the Crown Princess wore her Ruby Parure ), before stopping in London on their way home to Denmark.

Also in the United States were Prince Consort Felix and Hereditary Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, who visited the New York World’s Fair and met with President Roosevelt in Washington. Like he did with the Norwegian Guests (and Dutch and Belgian Royals), the President offered asylum to the Grand Ducal Family in case of war, and they arrived in the US the following year, staying in America for a short period before moving to Quebec, Canada for the duration of the War.

Philips settles suits over its DreamStation sleep apnea machines for $1.1 billion

Updated on: April 29, 2024 / 5:54 AM EDT / AFP

Dutch medical device maker Philips said Monday it had reached a $1.1 billion deal in the United States to settle lawsuits over faulty sleep machines in a case that have dogged the company.

The company's stock soared on news of the settlement, which was less onerous than feared by some shareholders.

Since 2021, Philips has been battling a series of crises over its DreamStation machines for sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing stops and starts during sleep.

Earlier this year, the company said it would halt new sales of the machines in the United States following a series of recalls of the devices made by subsidiary Philips Respironics.

Philips said in a statement Monday that it had reached an agreement with the plaintiffs "to resolve the personal injury litigation and the medical monitoring class action to end the uncertainty associated with litigation in the U.S.," adding that it didn't "admit any fault or liability, or that any injuries were caused by Respironics' devices."

The agreement addresses claims filed in U.S. courts and other potential cases, it said.

Analysts at the Jefferies investment firm said in a note that the settlement was "much milder than feared and shall mark the end of litigation uncertainty".

Shares in Philips surged by more than 33 percent on the Amsterdam stock exchange following the announcement.

"Patient safety and quality is our highest priority, and we have taken important steps in further resolving the consequences of the Respironics recall," Philips chief executive Roy Jakobs said in the company statement.

"The remediation of the sleep therapy devices for patients is almost complete, and the test results to date show the use of these devices is not expected to result in appreciable harm to health," he said.

"We do regret the concern that patients may have experienced," he said, adding that the settlements were "significant milestones and provide further clarity on the way forward for Philips."

Philips, which has had to cut thousands of jobs, posted losses of 463 million euros ($501 million) over the full year in 2023.

It reported a loss on Monday of 824 million euros in the first quarter of this year on sales totaling 4.1 billion euros.

Philips said the settlement payments are expected to take place in 2025 and will be funded through cash flow generation.

The company said it had booked a provision of 982 million euros ($1.05 billion) in the first quarter to cover the settlement.

Philips said it also concluded an agreement with insurers to pay Philips 540 million euros to cover Respironics recall-related claims.

"The three biggest litigation cases that we had are now put behind us," Jakobs said in a conference call.

"We can move on and that's very important," he said, while cautioning that it "doesn't mean that everything is resolved."

Franco-German bank Oddo BHF said that "with the long tail of remaining legal risks being very manageable, we believe the settlement today materially derisks the investment case."

Deadly storms, tornadoes and flash floods hammer Plains states and Texas

Extreme weather that battered parts of the Midwest and caused death and destruction over the weekend turned to Texas overnight and will move into the lower Mississippi Valley on Monday, bringing the risk of storms and flash flooding.

Rescue crews were sifting through wrecked homes in the hope of finding survivors after a devastating weekend.

At least five people, including an infant, were confirmed to have died as of Sunday in Oklahoma and Iowa as a result of extreme weather. The victims’ names have not been released.

On Monday, the National Weather Service said the tornado that struck Marietta, Oklahoma, on Saturday was upgraded to EF4 on the 1-5 scale of potency, meaning it produced sustained winds of at least 166 mph and possibly as strong as 200 mph.

It was the first EF4 tornado of the year across the country and the strongest so far. The destructive tornado that touched down in Sulphur on Saturday was assessed at EF3, defined as a vortex hitting the ground with sustained winds of 136 to 165 mph.

The weather service said it documented 25 tornadoes that touched down Saturday in the area covered by its office in Norman, Oklahoma.

It said Monday that "the worst of the heavy rain and thunderstorms should be behind us by this evening." But Tuesday could also bring severe weather to 6 million people.

Severe storms are possible across parts of Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. That includes some of the areas hit hard by weekend tornadoes, including Omaha and Lincoln in Nebraska; Des Moines, Iowa; and the Kansas City, Missouri, area. Very large hail and damaging winds will be the main risks, followed by isolated tornadoes and a flash flood risk Wednesday and Thursday from Wisconsin to Texas.

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms — with “very large hail,” severe wind and possible tornadoes — for eastern Nebraska, northwestern Iowa, northwestern Missouri, eastern Kansas, southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the next large system swinging in from the west will bring the risk for severe storms back to the central Plains and parts of Kansas, western Oklahoma and northern Texas. Topeka and Wichita in Kansas are the largest cities at risk for hazards that include heavy rain.

The weather service blames a succession of cold fronts dropping down and moving east from the Pacific Northwest. The systems clash with warmer air to the southeast, producing a roiling, unstable atmosphere that's fertile for tornadoes and thunderstorms.

"The weather pattern that keeps sending fast-moving disturbances across the western U.S. will continue to form new low pressure systems in quick succession over the mid-section of the country through the next couple of days," the weather service said in a national forecast discussion Monday.

The system that brought severe weather and flash flooding to Houston and New Orleans has moved off the Gulf Coast.

Storms in southeast Texas destroyed at least one home in the city of Trinity, reducing it to a pile of rubble, and damaged several others, NBC affiliate KPRC of Houston reported .

Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said in a Facebook video that a tornado demolished the house and that two people were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

"It's completely gone, cars turned completely upside down. It's kind of unheard of in our area, but thankfully everybody got out alive," he said.

On Monday, Conroe, Texas, Police Chief Jeff Christy said in a statement that Lt. James "Jimmy" Waller and his wife were injured in the Trinity County tornado.

Waller suffered critical injuries and will require multiple operations, Christ said. Waller's wife was treated and remains at his side, Christy said.

Tens of thousands of customers were without power Monday afternoon, including over 24,000 in Louisiana, 13,000 in Texas and more than 5,000 in Oklahoma, according to PowerOutage.us .

Social media posts showed cars driving through flooded streets in Trinity as heavy rain fell and thunder rumbled across the sky. The weather service in Houston said the flash flooding could be "life-threatening," with 4 to 8 inches of rain falling in some parts of southeastern Texas.

The streets were so flooded in Madisonville, Texas, on Sunday that a man was able to use a kayak to get around in a moment captured by a local resident .

Meanwhile, a huge cleanup operation is underway in Oklahoma, where entire towns have been devastated.

Tornado damage in Sulphur, Oklahoma.

"You just can’t believe the destruction," Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said during a visit to Sulphur, a town of about 5,000 people south of Oklahoma City, which was hit by a tornado. "It seems like every business downtown has been destroyed."

At least one person was killed and 30 people were injured in Sulphur, he said. Some of the victims were sheltering in a bar. Aerial photography showed the town's historic downtown district was reduced to rubble. Hospitals reported at least 100 people with injuries across Oklahoma.

Four semitrucks overturned in Marietta, and Interstate 35 was closed in the wake of the tornado there, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said. Utility lines fell and crossed the highway, it said by email.

Stitt signed a declaration of emergency status for 12 counties Sunday.

In Iowa, a tornado destroyed parts of Pottawattamie County on Friday, including around 300 homes and businesses, the county said in a release. The worst damage was in the city of Minden, where at least 48 homes were destroyed and a man died as a result of storm-related injuries.

The White House confirmed overnight that President Joe Biden had spoken to Stitt and "offered the full support of the federal government following Saturday’s deadly tornadoes in the state."

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen declared a state of emergency for Douglas, Lancaster and Washington counties just before 8 p.m. ET Sunday to unlock financial assistance in the wake of the severe storms. He posted pictures showing homes devastated by strong winds.

"The destruction is extensive," Pillen said Sunday on X. "Many families have lost their homes. But Nebraskans are helping Nebraskans and the state will support them."

What is already known about this topic?

Unprecedented heat waves can affect all persons, but some are more sensitive to the effects of heat, including children and adults with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and outdoor workers.

What is added by this report?

During the 2023 warm-season months (May–September), rates of emergency department visits for heat-related illness substantially increased across several U.S. regions compared with previous years, especially among males and adults aged 18–64 years.

What are the implications for public health practice?

Heat-related illness will continue to be a significant public health concern as climate change results in longer, hotter, and more frequent episodes of extreme heat. By monitoring heat-related health impacts, public health agencies can detect trends in health care utilization rates, identify subpopulations at increased risk, and guide public health actions tailored to specific heat exposure levels.

Unprecedented heat waves can affect all persons, but some are more sensitive to the effects of heat, including children and adults with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and outdoor workers. Many regions of the United States experienced record-breaking high temperatures in 2023, with populations exposed to extremely high temperatures for prolonged periods. CDC examined emergency department (ED) visits associated with heat-related illness (HRI) from the National Syndromic Surveillance Program and compared daily HRI ED visit rates during the warm-season months (May–September) of 2023 with those during 2018–2022. In the 2023 warm-season months, daily HRI ED visit rates peaked in several regions and remained elevated for a prolonged duration. More males than females sought care in EDs for HRI, especially males aged 18–64 years. CDC issued multiple public health alerts using the Epidemic Information Exchange system to bring attention to increases in ED utilization for HRI. Deaths and illnesses associated with heat exposure are a continuing public health concern as climate change results in longer, hotter, and more frequent episodes of extreme heat. Near real-time monitoring of weather conditions and adverse health outcomes can guide public health practitioners’ timing of risk communication and implementation of prevention measures associated with extreme heat.

Introduction

The warm-season months (May–September) of 2023 were the hottest ever recorded in the United States,* and adverse health impacts, including deaths and illnesses attributable to high ambient temperatures, received considerable attention. † Hot weather conditions can affect all persons; however, for certain specific populations, exposure and health risks are compounded by adverse physiologic, behavioral, demographic, or socioeconomic factors that result in their being disproportionately affected by extreme heat ( 1 ). Populations at highest risk typically include older persons, children and adolescents, persons with preexisting health conditions, pregnant women, outdoor workers, persons with limited access to cooling resources, and persons living in low-income communities. § Further, exceptionally hot conditions can increase the demand for medical services and strain health systems (e.g., a surge in persons seeking emergency department [ED] care) ( 2 ). Successful public health measures to reduce heat-related illness (HRI), including targeted communication and outreach campaigns for populations at risk, require coordination across various health care sectors and are often guided by near real-time assessments of heat exposure and its resulting adverse health impacts. To assess the health impact of exceedingly high temperatures observed during the warm-season months of 2023, CDC analyzed National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) data to compare daily HRI ED visit rates during May–September 2023 with those during May–September 2018–2022.

Data Sources

Data on HRI ED visits ¶ occurring during January 2018–December 2023 were extracted from NSSP’s Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-Based Epidemics (ESSENCE).** The daily number of HRI and all-cause ED visits were tabulated for each of the 10 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regions. †† NSSP data were analyzed to compare the 2023 heat season with the 2018–2022 seasons. To account for temporal changes among facilities sharing data with NSSP, comparisons between 2023 and previous years were restricted to those EDs with consistent reporting during the study period. §§

Descriptive and Statistical Analyses

After applying data quality filters to reduce artifactual changes in reporting patterns during 2018–2023, a maximum of 826 (range = 3–826; median = 36) ED facilities that participate in NSSP reported one or more visits associated with HRI. The HHS region–specific daily HRI ED visit rate (the number of ED visits for HRI per 100,000 all-cause ED visits) observed during the warm-season months of 2023 was compared with the 95th percentile value of the daily HRI ED visit rate distribution. The 95th percentile for each region was computed based on HRI ED data recorded for the 2018–2022 warm-season months.

Differences in HRI ED visit rates were evaluated by age group (0–17, 18–25, 26–54, 55–64, 65–74, and ≥75 years), sex, HHS region, and occurrence of the HRI ED visits during the hotter warm-season months (i.e., July and August). Rate ratios (RRs) and associated 95% CIs were estimated using a multivariate Poisson regression model. The daily number of HRI visits was regressed against predictors such as age group, sex, HHS region, and an indicator to denote the occurrence of HRI ED visits during the hotter warm-season months of July and August. The model also included the logarithm of all-cause ED visits to account as an offset term. For each predictor, the category with the lowest warm-season HRI ED visit rate was identified as the referent population. Regressions were executed for 2023 and 2018–2022 with the same model specifications and parameters. Analysis and visualization were conducted using R software (version 4.1.2; R Foundation) and SAS software (version 9.4; SAS Institute). This activity was reviewed by CDC, deemed not research, and was conducted consistent with applicable federal law and CDC policy. ¶¶

Characteristics of HRI ED Visits

During January 1–December 31, 2023, a total of 119,605 HRI ED visits were recorded in the ESSENCE system***; 92% of these visits occurred during May–September. Across the study period, July and August accounted for a higher average HRI ED visit rate (303 per 100,000 ED visits) compared with other warm-season months (May, June, and September) (97) ( Table 1 ). Further, the risk observed during July–August 2023 was more than three times that during May, June, and September (mean RR = 3.07), consistent with record-breaking temperatures observed across several HHS regions in 2023. ††† In comparison, the risk observed in July–August 2018–2022 was approximately twice as high as that of May, June, and September of the same period.

Demographic Characteristics of Persons with HRI ED Visits

In 2023, among the demographic groups considered, higher rates of HRI ED visits were observed among males (271 per 100,000 ED visits) than among females (104) and among adults aged 18–64 years (range = 207–222) than adults aged ≥65 years (range = 120–173). In addition, the risk for HRI ED visits among adults aged 18–25 and 26–54 years was approximately 2.5 times the risk in the referent population (persons aged <18 years).

Regional Differences in HRI ED Visits

HHS regional differences in warm-season HRI ED visit rates were observed in 2023. The lowest average warm-season HRI ED visit rate (51 per 100,000 ED visits) was reported by HHS Region 2 (New Jersey and New York), whereas the highest rate was reported by Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas) (483). Compared with Region 2 (the referent region), the HRI ED visit risks for regions 4, 6, 7, and 9 in 2023 were 1.5–2.5 times those during 2018–2022.

Daily HRI ED visit rates during the warm-season months in 2023 for several regions exceeded the 95th percentile of the daily HRI ED visit rate distribution for the warm-season months during 2018–2022 for multiple periods of ≥3 consecutive days in some regions (Supplementary Figure, https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/153146 ). For instance, in regions 6 and 9, HRI ED rates in July 2023 exceeded the 2018–2022 95th percentile for 16 and 18 consecutive days, respectively. In the warm-season months of 2023, every HHS region experienced ≥1 day above the 95th percentile ( Table 2 ). In regions 4, 6, 7, and 9, the number of days with HRI ED visit rates exceeding the 95th percentile was higher than that in any previous year in the study period. In Region 6 alone, more than one third (37%; 56) of the days during the warm season of 2023 had daily HRI ED visit rates exceeding the 95th percentile. Regions 6 and 7 experienced days with the highest rate of HRI ED visits ever recorded in the ESSENCE system for their respective region since 2018.

In recent years, health emergencies caused by heat exposure have become more frequent and widespread in the United States ( 1 ). The severity, frequency, and duration of heat waves in 2023 in some HHS regions resulted in record-high rates of HRI ED visits during the year, which prompted CDC to issue Epidemic Information Exchange (Epi-X) public health alerts. §§§

The finding of increased risk for HRI ED visit rates among certain demographic groups in 2023, particularly among males and adults aged 18–64 years, is similar to findings reported in other studies ( 3 ). Although the lowest HRI ED visit rates occurred among persons aged <18 years, previous studies of children and adolescents in different age groups suggest that children might also be subject to the effects of heat exposure at rates similar to those among adults in some areas of the United States ( 4 ). Persons who work outdoors might regularly endure extreme heat; this group warrants particular attention because of the high prevalence of HRI ED visits observed in working-aged adults. Frontline essential workers tending to emergencies, such as firefighters, might be at particularly high risk for exposure to heat stress ( 5 ). Regional differences in rates of HRI ED visits might reflect differential acclimatization, behavioral responses, and adaptation strategies ( 1 , 6 ). Understanding the causes of these differences can help guide the development and implementation of public health interventions, such as heat action plans and issuance of heat alerts calibrated based on local epidemiologic data (e.g., HeatRisk). ¶¶¶

Effective implementation of heat mitigation strategies is associated with social determinants of health. For example, even in areas with high rates of air conditioning, such as the South and southeastern United States, persons exposed to extreme heat might have limited or no access to cooling spaces ( 1 ). Factors that affect air conditioning use and access to cooling spaces include energy costs**** and the occurrence of outages due to power grid failure ( 1 , 7 , 8 ). HHS programs that provide financial assistance for residential energy †††† and monitor the safety of persons reliant on electricity-dependent durable medical equipment in case of power outages during extreme heat §§§§ can protect populations affected by heat stress. The intersection of communities with a high proportion of groups at risk, especially those with limited access to health care, with areas that experience persistent high ambient temperatures (e.g., heat islands or lack of green spaces) could be more susceptible to the effects of heat exposure ( 1 ). Public health initiatives can be designed to help communities prepare for extreme heat conditions and complement the efforts of weather and emergency management agencies, reducing illnesses and deaths. Tools used for syndromic surveillance, including ESSENCE, local systems, and visualization dashboards, help guide and strengthen public health preparedness and response. An example is CDC’s Heat and Health Tracker ( https://ephtracking.cdc.gov/Applications/heatTracker/ ), which provides local heat and health information for communities.

Limitations

The findings in this report are subject to at least five limitations. First, NSSP data are not nationally representative, and participation can vary by HHS region. Second, although the prevalence of HRI among U.S. military veterans has been increasing ( 9 ), this analysis does not include facilities operated by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition, the HRI ED visit rate reported by ESSENCE might not be representative of the rate in the general population because ESSENCE is not a population-based system but rather reflects the number of HRI ED visits among all-cause ED visits. Third, HRI information reported at the HHS regional level can obscure subregional variation. Fourth, estimation of HRI ED visit rates might have been affected during the COVID-19 pandemic because overall ED utilization patterns changed for specific subpopulations ( 10 ). Finally, HRI data from the ESSENCE system are based on ED visits only and do not identify cases of HRI among persons who sought treatment elsewhere, likely resulting in an underestimation of HRI prevalence.

Implications for Public Health Practice

The record-breaking temperatures of the 2023 warm-weather season had a substantial public health impact, and this trend might increase in the coming years because of climate change ( 1 ). Public health agencies rely on tools and surveillance systems to assess the adverse health effects of heat exposure. Timely mechanisms for tracking and reporting health effects, along with the ability to detect anomalous trends, especially during extreme heat emergencies, can facilitate the implementation of public health strategies to protect affected populations.

SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

Billie Eilish will continue her long-standing partnership with environmental nonprofit REVERB on this tour, building on the success of previous efforts, which resulted in over $1 million donated to environmental, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate justice projects, more than 150,000 fan actions, and much more. Sustainability efforts on this tour will include reducing greenhouse gas pollution, decreasing single-use plastic waste, supporting climate action, and updating concession offerings to promote and encourage plant-based food options with Support+Feed .

In keeping with her commitment to making a difference in the environmental impacts of her music and touring, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales in North America will go to  REVERB  and its ongoing effort to help support organizations across the country addressing the impacts of food insecurity and the climate crisis.

ECO-VILLAGE

The Billie Eilish REVERB Eco-Villages will be set up at 2 locations in the main concourse of every show where fans can take part in the tour’s sustainability efforts, connect with nonprofits, and take meaningful action for people and the planet.

SUPPORT+FEED

For collective action at the intersection of climate and food, Support+Feed will be launching a 360 campaign throughout the tour. Following the success in 2022, Support+Feed will offer an expanded version of the Support+Feed Pledge inspiring fans to eat one plant-based meal a day for 30 days with digital elements and community activations. Fans will also have the opportunity to participate in Plant-based Food Drives in a selection of cities alongside the tour to raise awareness and gather food to distribute to local communities.

Fans are encouraged to join the effort to make the HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR more sustainable. Where possible, take public transportation and carpool to and from the shows to help reduce greenhouse gas pollution and encourage more public transportation options. Fans will receive information via email about public transportation options before the show.

Venue partners are also helping to lessen the environmental footprint of the tour. In addition to efforts to decrease waste through reducing or eliminating single-use plastics and diverting landfill waste with compost and recycling, venues will be offering plant-based food options at all shows.

FAN PARTICIPATION

Bring an empty reusable water bottle or donate for a custom RockNRefill Nalgene bottle to fill up at the free water refill stations located at each venue. The RockNRefill bottles and refill stations are located at the Eco-Villages in the main concourse at all shows. Fight fast fashion by opting for thrifted, upcycled, or borrowed clothes instead of buying new clothing to wear to shows.

*The tour wants to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value. To make this possible they have chosen to use Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange. If fans purchase tickets for a show in the U.S. or Canada and can’t attend, they’ll have the option to resell them to other fans at the original price paid. To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows except those in Colorado, Illinois, and New York where Face Value Exchange cannot be mandated. Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange. More information on how the Ticketmaster Exchange works is available here .

Gianni Infantino meets United States House of Representatives members to outline plans for FIFA tournaments

The meetings took place on Capitol Hill, Washington DC

FIFA President stressed the importance of close collaboration with the federal government

The United States will host the Mundial de FIFA Clubes 25™ and co-host the FIFA World Cup 26™

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has met with several key members of the House of Representatives in the United States federal government on Capitol Hill, Washington DC, to outline plans for the upcoming FIFA events to be staged in the United States. Starting with the new 32-team Mundial de Clubes FIFA 25™ in the summer of 2025 and followed by the biggest-ever FIFA World Cup™ in 2026 (also co-hosted by Canada and Mexico) featuring 48 national teams, the United States will stage major global football tournaments in back-to-back years.

“We are in Washington DC to ensure that we have in place the best possible means for the new FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 and the biggest-ever FIFA World Cup in 2026 to be successful, and that can only happen by having a close collaboration with the United States federal government,” the FIFA President said. “It was great to meet many dignitaries and to discuss how we can make sure, together, that these tournaments will be a fantastic success because, overall, there will be five million people coming to follow these two global events. We need to be ready and we need to be prepared.” Kicking off the two-day visit, the FIFA President’s first engagement involved a round table meeting with Soccer Caucus and Host City Representatives for the meeting hosted by Co-Chairs Reps. Darin LaHood, Kathy Castor, and Rick Larsen together with Reps. Pete Aguilar, Jake Auchincloss, Andy Barr, Ron Estes, Randy Feenstra, Drew Ferguson, Brian Fitzpatrick, Carlos Gimenez, Lance Gooden, Josh Gottheimer, Garret Graves, Pramila Jayapal, Nick LaLota, Morgan Luttrell, Blake Moore, Seth Moulton, Jimmy Panetta, María Salazar, Beth Van Duyne, and David Valadao.

After the round table meeting, separate discussions were also held on Capitol Hill with the House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, the House of Representatives Majority Whip Tom Emmer at the Speaker’s Office, and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The exchanges addressed a wide range of topics related to the planning of both tournaments, especially given their global scale and the need to maintain a constant collaboration on issues related to transportation, safety and security, visas and immigration, as well as other operational and commercial matters to ensure the smooth delivery of the event for all fans, teams and officials - both for those in the United States and for those travelling to the country from abroad.
