Lamy Safari matte Black

To tell the truth, none of previous special editions truly spoke in my experience. Up until weekly or two ago we only had one Safari FP, and I also wasn't actually considering getting more. But oh child, did things switch rapidly! The moment I saw leaked pictures for the rumoured 'next special edition', I made the decision that it was time and energy to get another safari; the Dark Lilac.

To place it within the -slightly adapted- terms of Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained (among my favourite films btw):

"Lamy, you had my fascination, nevertheless now you have got my interest!"

In which there is -as I mentioned- people who rave towards Safari, there's no doubting that Lamy Safaris are not precisely the pinnacle of design, some could even call all of them ugly. That said, I really think the new color system facilitates rendering it an even more 'stylish pen'. The black colored accents regarding the dark purple human anatomy (dark 'lilac', I personally believe it really is a lot more of a purple) lead to a subdued, streamlined pen. It's nothing like the 'girly' pen We expected if they very first rumoured a purple safari.

Ink window in the barrel.
Easy ink installation—simply put the cartridge inside the barrel or grip section, then screw the barrel and grip section together to automatically puncture the cartridge.
Sturdy ABS plastic construction.
Large, flexible metal pocket clip.
One blue ink cartridge .
To prevent the ink cartridge from being punctured in transit, this pen comes with a cardboard spacer ring between the barrel and grip section. The ring must be removed before using the pen.
This pen may come with ink residue in the nib from being dip tested by LAMY at the factory. As with all new fountain pens, we recommend giving your pen a good cleaning before you use it.

LAMY safari Fountain Pen - A Special Edition History

Every year, LAMY produces a special edition of the popular LAMY safari fountain pen, sometimes even in multiple colors. Here we've compiled a visual look back at all of the annual special edition LAMY safari fountain pens that have been available in the United States, for at least as long as Goulet Pens has been around.

The Colors:

2024: blackberry violet, pink cliff.

One of two special edition colors for 2024 in the kewi collection! blackberry violet features a glossy dark purple barrel and cap, with a light purple finial and grip section. pink cliff features a matte blue-grey barrel and cap, with a pink finial and grip section. Both pens have a black trim and a black clip. Matching inks were also released, in blackberry and cliff .

2023: aquasky, lightrose, and springgreen

Another set of three pastel colors for 2023! The aquasky light blue, the lightrose pink, and the springgreen fountain pens each have a glossy pastel resin barrel and cap, with color-matched trim. Each comes equipped with a silver steel nib.

These three pastel colors are similar to the 2019 special editions, but a bit more vibrant in color.

2022: strawberry, and cream

The LAMY safari fountain pen in strawberry features a matte red body with a matching red clip and a silver steel nib.

The cream version features a matte ivory body with a matching ivory clip and a silver steel nib.

2021 : terra, and savannah

These two colors serve as an homage to the original LAMY safari fountain pen colors from the 1980's.

terra features a matte orange-red body, complemented by a black clip and a black steel nib.

savannah features a matte olive green body, with a black clip and a black steel nib.

2020 : aquamarine, mango, and violet

These three vibrant special edition colors were dubbed the "candy" collection.

The mango featured a yellow-orange body, clip, and finial, and a silver steel nib. A matching yellow-orange ink was also made available separately in bottles and ink cartridges.

The aquamarine version featured an aqua turquoise body, clip, and finial, and a silver steel nib.

Finally, the LAMY safari fountain pen in violet featured an all-purple body, clip, and finial, and a silver steel nib.

2019 : Blue Macaron, Mint Glaze, and Powder Rose

In 2019, three colors were introduced together as a special edition collection for the first time. These three LAMY safari fountain pen special edition colors were known together as the Pastel collection.

Blue Macaron featured a glossy pastel blue barrel and cap, with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Mint Glaze came with a glossy pastel green barrel and cap, with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Finally, the Powder Rose featured a glossy pastel pink barrel and cap, with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

2018 : All Black

A totally stealthed-out special edition! This LAMY safari fountain pen in all black featured a matte black barrel and cap, a black clip, and a black steel nib.

2017 : Petrol

Another very popular special edition! This matte teal LAMY safari fountain pen in petrol came with a black clip and a black steel nib. A matching petrol teal ink was also made available separately in bottles and ink cartridges.

2016 : Dark Lilac

Definitely the most popular LAMY safari special edition ever, to this day. The LAMY safari fountain pen in dark lilac was the first purple safari. It was also the first of the popular matte versions in the special edition series. This fountain pen came with a black clip and a black steel nib, and an incredibly popular bottled ink and ink cartridges that sold out far too quickly. It now has a cult-like following!

2015 : NeonLime

The final installment in a trend of bright yellow-greens was the neonlime. This LAMY safari special edition fountain pen featured a bright glossy neon yellow-green barrel and cap, silver clip, and a silver steel nib. In addition, it was accompanied by a matching neonlime bottled ink and ink cartridges.

2014 : Neon Coral

Continuing the neon trend was the bright glossy pink/orange neon coral. This special edition fountain pen came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

2013 : Neon Yellow

The first in a series of bright, neon colors was Neon Yellow . It came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

2012 : Apple Green

This glossy apple green LAMY safari fountain pen came with a silver clip, and a silver steel nib.

Originally released as a special edition, it was later re-released as a regular edition under the name " green ".

2011 : Aquamarine

A glossy bright turquoise color, this LAMY safari special edition in aquamarine came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Later re-released as a regular edition, the aquamarine color was discontinued once again.

About the LAMY safari fountain pen:

The LAMY safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen. However, it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens

Over the past few years in the fountain pen community, it seems as though we have become overwhelmingly obsessed with yearly limited and special edition pens and inks. Big names like Pelikan and Sailor have jumped on the bandwagon of doing limited editions, as well as smaller custom makers, like Edison.

But really, where did this craze for limited edition pens come from? The quintessential limited edition that really kicked it off in the pen community is the yearly release of the LAMY Safari. They are affordable and reliable, making them some of the most collectible pens on the market. So how about we take a stroll down memory lane and look back at some of the highlights of the past 10 years of LAMY Special Edition Safari fountain pens!

First Generation

The first generation of the LAMY Safari was launched in 1980 with 3 color options available. Those 3 colors were Terracotta Orange, Savannah Green, and Charcoal Black. They all came in textured finishes, with the classic LAMY faceted grip section and stainless steel LAMY nib (for the fountain pen version).

While these were not technically the “limited edition” Safaris that we all know and love today, they are worth mentioning, as they were what started LAMY’s longstanding tradition of limited edition Safaris.

2014 - Neon Coral

In 2014, LAMY continued their trend of bright neons with a glossy pinkish-orangey neon coral. This special edition fountain pen had a silver steel nib and silver clip.

2015 - Neon Lime

The last in the series of bright Safaris from LAMY was the Neon Lime fountain pen. This special edition pen had a glossy, neon yellow-green cap and barrel with a silver steel nib and silver clip. It also came with matching neon lime bottled ink and cartridges.

2016 - Dark Lilac

After a few years of releasing neon finishes and bright colors for their yearly limited edition Safaris, LAMY decided to step up their game by introducing the Dark Lilac Safari, one of the all-time favorite limited editions of any brand in our community. It is a gorgeous, deep, dark purple color with a black clip and black nib.

Additionally, after many years of glossy-finished limited editions, the Dark Lilac came equipped with the very classy textured finish that LAMY offers on some of their Safaris. Many people prefer the textured finish, as they think it makes the pen look nicer and feel better in the hand. Plus, the texturing doesn’t get nearly as slippery as the glossy Safaris do after longer writing sessions.

2017 - Petrol

Another crowd favorite, the Safari Petrol was a dark, teal color leaning more on the blue side. Again, it came with the black clip and black nib, keeping with LAMY’s understated and simplistic design principles. With such understated designs, LAMY has really mastered the art of restraint, which I think shines through especially well with the simple, dark color of the 2017 Safari Petrol.

2018 - All Black

The All Black special edition of 2018 was a classic-colored fountain pen. This featured a matte black barrel and cap and came with a black clip and a black steel nib.

2019 - Blue Macaron, Mint Glaze, and Powder Rose

2019 was the first year that LAMY introduced not one, not two, but three fountain pens for their special edition release. These colors were known together as the Pastel collection.

Blue Macaron had a glossy pastel blue cap and barrel and came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Mint Glaze had a glossy pastel green cap and barrel, and it came with a silver steel nib and clip.

Last but not the least, Powder Rose featured a glossy pastel pink cap and barrel and also came with a silver steel nib and clip.

2020 - Aquamarine, Mango, Violet

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - LAMY Safari Candy Fountain Pens

Collections became popular during this time, so it was no surprise that in the year following the Pastel collection’s release, LAMY had another for us: the LAMY Safari Candy Fountain Pens . They came out with three vibrant special edition colors for 2020: Aquamarine, Mango, and Violet.

The Mango had a yellow-orange barrel, cap, clip, and finial and came with a silver steel nib. There was also a matching yellow-orange ink that was available in ink cartridges and bottles.

The special edition pen in Violet had an all-purple body, clip, and finial, and it came with a silver steel nib.

Lastly, the the aquamarine version had an aqua turquoise body, clip, and finial. The pen also had a silver steel nib.

2021 - Savannah and Terra

To bring it around full circle in 2021, LAMY announced the re-release of their original colors, the Savannah and the Terra! Upon making the re-release a reality, there were a few differences made apparent between the new Safaris and the first generation.

The colors of the pens are just slightly different, along with the names. Instead of being “Savannah Green” and “Terracotta Orange, ” they now have the sleeker, more modern names seen above. I think LAMY really hit it out of the park with this year’s limited editions, making it even more difficult for them to one-up themselves next year, as they seem to do every year!

2022 - Strawberry and Cream

For dessert lovers, there’s nothing better than LAMY’s 2022 special edition release of the Strawberry and Cream line. The fountain pen features a matte red body with a matching red clip. It comes with a steel nib. The cream version, on the other hand, has a matte ivory body with a matching clip and also comes with a silver steel nib.

2023 - Aqua Sky, Light Rose, and Spring Green

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - LAMY Safari Deelittle Fountain Pens

LAMY churned out another set of pastel colors for 2023: LAMY Safari Deelittle Fountain Pens in Aqua Sky, Light Rose, and Spring Green. Each pen has a glossy pastel resin cap and barrel, matching trim, and is fixed with a silver steel nib. They are similar to the 2019 special editions but are more saturated and vibrant in color.

2024 - Blackberry Violet and Pink Cliff

Looking Back at 10 Years of LAMY Special Edition Fountain Pens - LAMY Safari Kewi Fountain Pens

The special edition LAMY Safari Kewi Fountain Pens for 2024 are quite unique as they feature different-colored grip sections. The first is Blackberry Violet, which has a glossy dark purple cap and barrel with a light purple section and finial. Pink Cliff has a matte blue-grey cap and barrel with a pink section and finial. Both these pens come with black trim and a black clip. These pens were also released with matching inks (Blackberry and Cliff).

The Bottom Line

All in all, the fountain pen community certainly seems to have enjoyed collecting these special editions pens. LAMY always finds a way to create something new and exciting that gives the community something to look forward to and anticipate going into the new year. In case you can't read my chicken scratch:

New ink, new pen. This is Diamine Bilberry in an EF Lamy Safari.

I got lucky - this nib is exceptionally smooth.

This notepad is new as well - a Rhodia N o 16 Dotpad and pad holder.

I am very pleased!

This is a very nice pen. I actually like the triangular grip section, since I naturally hold my pens in a tripod grip. The pen still strikes me as being a little funny looking, but I really like the matte black with the black nib, and it feels like a very sturdy pen, despite being plastic.

This is going to be my carry-everywhere pen, but I sure hope I don't lose it! It's a great writer! My handwriting is small enough that I prefer an EF or F nib, and this Lamy EF is a perfect fit for me.

My only complaint is the size of the converter - it's not huge to begin with, and It doesn't fill completely - there was a sizable air bubble at the top after each of multiple filling attempts.

Overall, I'd give this pen high marks - probably an 8.5/10. It's a winner!

I have a similar view of the Lamy Safari. It's quite a sturdy pen, considering it's plastic and the best part is that, for a fountain pen, it's quite affordable, so it's feasible to have several of them and it's not a disaster if one gets lost or stolen.

I have four of the charcoal / black clip Safaris and a red one I keep filled with red ink for markup.

Overall, a very solid pen.

Hey, there's a reason they're probably one of the best selling fountain pens ever - Lamy pens in general really are great! I've never had a Lamy pen that I didn't like.

And while I only just started with two of their Safari fountain pens, I know I'll love these as well.

The fact that you can buy five for the price of any other 'cheap' fountain pen makes it really, really hard for me to spend more on another product.

I've considered one of these, but I can't get away from that clip. It's ugly as sin and makes the pen look very cheap.

I don't really have a use for a clip other than to stop the pen rolling off the desk. Having it dominate the look of the pen like that seems so unnecessary.

Nice review! I am very mixed on the Safari. Some people do not like the grip, but I absolutely love it. Love the look as well. I have had two though, and I find the nibs pretty dry and scratchy. It's not terrible, but just enough that I'd rather use something else. I've got a 1.1 italic coming though, so we'll see how that goes!

Hi All, Really well designed pen, it fits my hand well, but some users don't like the flats on the section, as it forces a certain 'correct' finger grip.

The nibs are usually good, or very good, I had one that was 'iffy' but needed some smoothing. My Vista demonstrator is a treat to write with, very hard to fault.

(If I had to, I would like the grip section to be a few mm's wider, and there can be a slight leak around the top edge of the nib.)

The clip is unusual, but I believe that it's really aimed at the school/student market, so maybe that explains the design, but unlike many clips, it does work and stays springy, unlike some other brands I own.

The charcoal Safari with a black clip is much less obvious, than say, the red pen with chrome clip.

I have 'improved' the ink flow on two of mine with a wider tine gap, but the last Safari I bought (Dec '12) had what I thought was too much gap, but it was very marginal, and to be fair it wrote very well.

The included cartridge works well too and the blue ink is as good as many other brands I have.

Otherwise Lamy make a very good converter, which works well and is also useful in cleaning the nib and section by drawing water up and down through section. Overall, good value for money.

My experience parallels yours, I think. A Safari was my first fountain pen, a gift, and when I got it out of the box my first reaction was, "What IS this THING?"

But it was a lovely writer, and as I learned more about fountain pens I began to understand how the weird things about it were all answers to questions of function. It's tough! Clips to anything! Won't roll off the table, capped or uncapped! Shows a newbie like me how to hold it! As a result, I've become very fond of the design and now own 4 Safaris and an Al-Star. They aren't to everyone's taste, but they have become mine.

If I get another fountain pen (I probably will get one more at some point; my current point in life means I'm limiting myself to five for now), it may well be another Safari or an Al-Star. I'm definitely getting one for my partner at some point. They're a bit bizarre, but very functional, and you can't beat the price.

I love my Charcoal Safari. The nib is a tiny bit scratchy. I have a spare EF at home I should put on it but it's not black. I keep meaning to get a 1.1 for it, my Vista and Al-Star . . . but it's like when I have a spare $30 I only want inks.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

About a year ago, I would have dismissed these offhand. That awful clip! Such ugly colours! I've since come to think I judged the Safari far too harshly. The clip is probably more geared towards securing the pen to a folder than a pocket, and the charcoal finish is quite nice. I can't figure out whether I'd find the grip section the best thing since sliced bread or a major annoyance. They actually have these in Rymans, and I always have a look when I go in for notebooks. They look a good size and well proportioned, at least through the blister packages security locked to the wall racks.

I love my Lamy's, whether Safari or Studio or Vista or whatnot. They are affordable and well-made, and most importantly for me: you do not have to make a final choice on what nib you would like when you by the pen! I have a small collection Lamy nibs and can convert my Safari FF into a Safari Italic 1.1 in no time.

In my experience, if you refil, empty, refil, empty a few times, the bubble gets significantly smaller (be sure to empty "under water").

Okay, I used to have the Letter Writers Alliance and The Snail Mail Exchange in here. Somehow, my browsers settings and the forum's settings work together to prevent that from being the case at the moment. Whenever I try to update my signature, the whole process breakls down. So. Whatever.

I tried that...although it's possible I didn't have it submerged enough. I messed up my back last weekend and bending over the table I was working on was a bit of a challenge.

I agree with your opinion of the appearance of the Safari - it's a weird shape and the brightware on it looks unattractive.

IMO, the chrome actually looks appealing as a highlight against the Vista's transparent plastic body, and the transparency disguises the downright ugly shape of the grip section. And I enjoy being able to see how much ink I have left in the cart/converter/feed.

1. Perhaps the easiest way would be to purchase a new nib for about $13.00 from gouletpens.com and others. Every nib is a little different and a new may be better--or worse.

2. Another alternative is to polish it yourself, get a nib smoothing kit from http://www.richardspens.com for about $8-15. You may mess up your nib, in which case, go back to #1.

3. The most expensive option is to follow FPN's own, Wim Geereats' Nib Grinding Experiences . Once again, in case of failure, go back to #1.

So this is another advantage of the Lamy Safari, a relatively inexpensive replaceable nib.

I noticed that you live in India. You might try contacting Hari317 for Indian sources for these items. He lives in Mumbai and posts all the time, about 9000 posts or so. He always has something worthwhile to say.

Just as a general Lamy note: I have posted before somewhere about the fact that Lamys and Lamy parts are a lot cheaper in Germany than in most other countries. I have bought quite a few nibs over the past year or so, and never paid more than 4 Euro. Surely one of these places ships to India. I have just skimmed the amazon.de listings and many businesses seling Lamy nibs via that site offer internatioal shipping. Yes, it may cost you 14 Euros, but maybe if a few people get together and order a couple of nibs...

I love this pen, its a great starter fountain pen, easy to use, writes beautifully.

Excellent writing experience

Bought this lovely fountain pen for the second time. My first one got lost. I love this charcoal colour more as it feels more sweat-proof. The writing with it is smooth and ink just flows whenever I put the nib on paper. I used to write in black ink but this time I want to try out blue black. I’ll write a lot in the upcoming summer. I’m sure it will be a great time with this pen. The price is nice and the post delivery is as good.

Comfortable to hold, smooth operation. I’ve been using it over the last few weeks with the Platinum carbon black waterproof ink in the converter. No problems. A pleasure to use.

The Safari is by far the best value fountain pen and perfect for beginners and veterans fountain pen users alike. Found medium to be best. The medium is a legit medium - so thinner than on a Lamy2000, but probably not Japanese fountain pen thin (never had a Japanese one so don’t know, really). Wet, but not so much that it doesn’t almost instantaneously dry with any decent ink, smooth as butter. Only thing people should be wary of is if they’re particular about how they hold the pen, this has grooves to ensure the “student” is holding the pen correctly.

Khabarovsk , the administrative center of Khabarovsk Krai, is one of the largest industrial, transport, cultural, educational, and scientific centers of the Far East of Russia. This city is located at the intersection of international railway and air transport routes on the right bank of the Amur River, near the border with China.

History of Khabarovsk

Foundation of khabarovsk.

Until the mid-19th century, the territory of present-day Khabarovsk, in accordance with the Nerchinsk Treaty, was located on a neutral territory, not delimited between the Qing Empire (China) and the Russian Empire. In 1858, the Aigun Treaty was signed, according to which the entire left bank of the Amur River passed into the possession of the Russian Empire, the right bank of the Amur to the Ussuri River became part of China.

After signing the treaty, the 13th Siberian Line Battalion was sent to establish settlements along the Amur. One of the new settlements was named Khabarovka - in honor of Yerofey Khabarov, a 17th-century Russian explorer known for his attempts to colonize this region for Russia. In 1864, the first plan for the development of the future town was made. By 1865, there were 1,294 residents in Khabarovka - mostly soldiers and officers.

Initially, only military buildings were constructed in Khabarovka. Five years after the foundation, there were already 167 buildings in the settlement including the house of the commander, barracks, warehouses, residential buildings, and trading shops. Due to its very convenient location at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovka began to develop very quickly.

Following the military settlers, civilians began to arrive from all parts of the Russian Empire including Moscow and St. Petersburg. At that time, their main occupations were hunting, fur trade, and fishing. The settlers were provided with free fertile land, which also contributed to the influx of new residents to Khabarovka.

Khabarovsk - a regional center of the Russian Far East

In 1873, the first elementary school was opened in Khabarovka. The Russo-Chinese treaty of 1881 allowed duty-free trade in the 50-kilometer land border zone and the goods of Chinese and English manufacturers could be bought half cheaper here.

By 1880, Khabarovka was already a rather large settlement of Primorsky Oblast with a population of 2,036 people (47.3% - military, 23% - bourgeois, 21.3% - foreigners (mainly Chinese workers), 1.4% - representatives of the indigenous population, and 7% - officers, clergy, merchants, industrialists).

At that time, the capital of Primorsky Oblast was Nikolayevsk (today’s Nikolayevsk-on-Amur), but Khabarovka had a more advantageous geographical position, as it was located at the crossroads of all communication lines from Vladivostok and the coast. In 1880, Khabarovka became the center of Primorsky Oblast and transformed into a town. In 1893, the town was renamed Khabarovsk.

In 1894, the Amur (Khabarovsk) department of the Russian Geographical Society was created with a museum (the Khabarovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore) and a library. In 1895, the first vocational technical school was opened - the railway school of the Ministry of Railways. During these years, a lot of stone houses were built in Khabarovsk. Most of them are preserved in the city to this day.

In 1897, the first train departed from the Khabarovsk railway station. The Ussuri Railway connected Khabarovsk with Vladivostok. The population of the town was about 14,900 people.

Khabarovsk in the 20th century and beyond

In 1916, the construction of a railway bridge over the Amur was completed and Khabarovsk was connected by the Amur Railway with Eastern Siberia.

November 14, 1922, after the liquidation of the Far Eastern Republic, Khabarovsk became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On December 6, 1923, the administrative center of the Russian Far East was transferred to Khabarovsk from Chita. In 1925, the railway bridge over the Amur was restored.

On January 4, 1926, Far Eastern Krai was formed with its center in Khabarovsk. The population of the city was about 52 thousand people. On October 23, 1934, the Far Eastern Agricultural Research Institute was established in Khabarovsk. In 1936, Khabarovsk was connected by rail with Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

By 1939, the population of Khabarovsk increased to 200 thousand people. From June 1940, the command of the Far Eastern Front was deployed in Khabarovsk. From August 1945, the headquarters of the High Command of Soviet Forces in the Far East and the command of the 1st Far Eastern Front were stationed in the city.

On March 16, 1946, the Khabarovsk Drama Theater was created. In 1949, a trial was held in Khabarovsk in the case of former members of the Japanese Kwantung Army. The most significant changes in the city occurred in the post-war decades.

In 1960, the Khabarovsk television studio began broadcasting. On October 24, 1964, the Khabarovsk Shipyard produced the first “Rocket”, a famous Soviet hydrofoil ship. On September 1, 1967, the Khabarovsk Institute of Physical Education (the Far Eastern State Academy of Physical Culture) was opened. On September 1, 1968, the Khabarovsk State Institute of Arts and Culture was opened.

In 1975, the population of Khabarovsk was about 502,000 people. By 1990, Khabarovsk was formed as a multifunctional economic center of national importance. The population reached its maximum of 616 thousand people.

In May 2000, federal districts were formed in the Russian Federation. Khabarovsk became the center of the Far Eastern Federal District. In 2008, the railway station was completely renovated. In 2009, the reconstruction of the bridge across the Amur was finished. In late summer - early fall of 2013, Khabarovsk was affected by flooding, which became the strongest over the entire observation period since 1897.

On December 13, 2018, the center of the Far Eastern Federal District was moved from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok.

Khabarovsk - Features

Khabarovsk is often considered the capital of the Russian Far East. The city is located in Asia, in the southern part of the Central Amur Lowland, near the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, about 17 km from the border with China. The city stands on the elevated right bank of the Amur River, the relief of which is diverse and complex.

The distance from Moscow to Khabarovsk by roads is about 8,250 km, to Vladivostok - 750 km. About half of the population of Khabarovsk Krai lives in this city. Khabarovsk is a bit similar to the large cities of the Volga region. Here you can see similar new buildings wedging chaotically into the cityscape and an abundance of pre-revolutionary architecture.

Although Khabarovsk can’t boast of Vladivostok’s seaside flavor or all-Russian sights, it’s still worth coming here, and to some extent this is inevitable: all routes of the Khabarovsk region converge here.

The climate in Khabarovsk is temperate monsoon, with snowy cold winters and hot humid summers. The average temperature in January is minus 20.5 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 21.8 degrees Celsius. The number of sunny days per year is significantly higher than in a number of large cities of Russia (up to 300 days a year; in Moscow and St. Petersburg - about 100).

From November to March, very dry and frosty continental air with clear and sunny weather is established over the city. The best time to visit Khabarovsk is June and September when the weather is not too hot.

Khabarovsk is a major hub at the junction of water, air, rail, and road communications from the north and west of the country, Primorye, Sakhalin, and the ports of Khabarovsk Krai. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city, as well as the railway line to Komsomolsk-on-Amur. This city is the connecting point of the federal highways “Amur” (Chita - Khabarovsk), “Ussuri” (Khabarovsk - Vladivostok), and Khabarovsk - Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Urban transport includes trams, trolleybuses, buses, minibuses, and taxis.

The international airport “Novy” offers regular flights to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan).

The design of the Russian 5,000 rubles banknote features Khabarovsk. On its front side you can see the monument to Muravyov-Amursky (the founder of Khabarovsk and Vladivostok) on the background of the embankment of the Amur River. The Khabarovsk bridge over the Amur is depicted on the back of the banknote. At the time of construction, in 1916, it was one of the longest bridges in the world and was called “The Amur Miracle”.

The fork-shaped cross depicted on the coat of arms of Khabarovsk symbolizes the location of the city at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers. Fish reminds of the main occupation of the first residents - fishing. The white-breasted bear and the Amur tiger are endemic to the Amur land.

Main Attractions of Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk Regional Museum named after Nikolai Grodekov . The expositions of this museum feature exhibits on the paleontology and geology of the Amur Region, the flora and fauna of the Far East, the fish of the Amur basin, the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Amur region and Russian settlers, the history of the development of the Russian Far East, the events of the Civil War in the Far East (1917-1922). The museum building (1896) is a monument of architecture, culture, and history of federal significance. Shevchenko Street, 11.

Amur (Khabarovsk) Cliff - the most beautiful place in the city located in the center of Admiral Gennady Nevelsky Embankment running along the Amur River bank, near the Khabarovsk Regional Museum. In 1858, a military detachment led by commander Yakov Dyachenko landed here. He decided to set up his camp here, which later became a military settlement, and even later - the village of Khabarovka.

Here you can find a good observation deck with beautiful views of the Amur River and the city. Nearby, there is a park with the famous monument to the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia Muravyov-Amursky. This monument is depicted on the Russian banknote of 5,000 rubles. Shevchenko Street, 15.

The Far Eastern Art Museum - the largest museum of fine art in the Russian Far East. The collection of this museum has about 16 thousand works of art of the Old Russian, Russian pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and modern periods. Here you can also see the Far Eastern and Western European fine art, the art of the peoples of the Amur Region, works of Russian icon painting of the 15th-20th centuries. Shevchenko Street, 7.

Military History Museum of the Far Eastern Military District . The museum exhibits documents, photographs, banners of all periods of the history of the Far Eastern Military District, starting with the Russian Civil War in the Far East and to our time. In the courtyard, there is an exhibition of military equipment. Shevchenko Street, 20.

Khabarovsk Assumption Cathedral - the first stone building and one of the largest churches in Khabarovsk. The original building was demolished in 1930. In 2002, the cathedral was restored according to a new architectural project in the Russian style with some eclectic features. The new cathedral as a whole differs from the original building, but has some of its elements. In particular, the shapes of the arches and domes of the new cathedral were taken from the old version. Sobornaya (Komsomolskaya) Square.

Khabarovsk Bridge (“The Amur Miracle”) - one of the main symbols of Khabarovsk. The construction of this bridge completed the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1916. This bridge is depicted on the Russian 5,000 Rubles banknote. In the 1990s, the bridge was reconstructed, its old openwork spans were dismantled. Nearby, you can find the Museum of the History of the Amur Bridge with the last preserved span of the original design.

Lenin Square - the central and most picturesque square in Khabarovsk. In size, it is second only to Red Square in Moscow. It is framed by buildings of various styles of architecture, size, and number of storeys. There are beautiful fountains, well-groomed flower beds, and trimmed lawns here.

Severny Park - a cascade of three small but very picturesque ponds. In the middle of the green lawns and trees there are small arbors, as well as a snow-white wedding palace. Nearby, you can see the Church of Seraphim of Sarov. Kakhovskaya Street, 1.

I lived in Khabarovsk for many years. I was an American working there. I spoke fluent Russian and pretty much blended right in. No one guessed I was a foreigner. I made lots of truly wonderful friends some of whom became like family.

I walked about any time I felt like it and never had any sort of problems. I lived in several other cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg and Khabarovsk is my favorite. If I could figure out a way to live there permanently, I would with pleasure.

I had the pleasure of flying a number of flights to Khabarovsk in the early 1990's. I met some wonderful people, one very special person. While the city was in a semi state of disrepair, it still held the historic beauty of its earlier years.

It has been over 20 years since my visit and I would very much like to return. Perhaps not in this life time but the memories live on.
