St George's Chapel is a true wonder, a gothic masterpiece, and the last resting place of Royalty . Henry VIII was famous for his six wives, King George III, the last King of the 13 American colonies. In 1924 Queen Mary's Dolls' House was built as a gift to Queen Mary; the detail and craftmanship will astonish you. It took 1500 artisans three years to build.
Older than the Pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge , Europe's most famous prehistoric monument, is around 5,000 years old. Salisbury Cathedral is one of Britain's largest and most elegant and one of Europe's great examples of early English gothic architecture. This magnificent place of worship celebrated its 800th birthday in 2020. Visiting Salisbury - what to expect
Also a gateway for visiting stonehenge independently.
Salisbury is approximately 80 miles south west of London and an easy day trip from London.
Salisbury Cathedral is the main draw for most visitors. Unlike its cousins, Salisbury did not evolve gradually over centuries, with constant additions and renovations.
As a result, it presents a unity of vision that is remarkable. Every year more than 600,000 visitors come from all over the world to the Cathedral and Close, the largest and best preserved Cathedral Close in Britain.
Just outside current day Salisbury is Old Sarum (Old Salisbury) originally an old Iron Age hill fort that was Salisbury until medieval times.
Salisbury is also the main jumping off point for world famous Stonehenge .
We have a page covering the logistics of making a visit to Stonehenge by public transport from Salisbury.
Salisbury Cathedral City of Salisbury Old Sarum Salisbury by train from London Salisbury & Stonehenge tours Stonehenge Tour Bus
Salisbury Cathedral
The single biggest attraction within Salisbury itself is Salisbury Cathedral , one of the finest Gothic Cathedrals in England.
For US visitors, the Magna Carta on show in the Chapter House is a special attraction. Tower tours are especially popular.
Every year more than 600,000 visitors come from all over the world to the Cathedral and Close, the largest and best preserved Cathedral Close in Britain.
The City of Salisbury
In the rush to see Canterbury Cathedral and then push on to nearby Stonehenge, the City of Salisbury is sometimes overlooked.
The city was at its height arguably back in medieval times, a centre for the wool industry. Many of the buildings in the centre are the wooden-framed houses dating back to this time.
It's worth at least a stroll through the shopping area, perhaps taking a leisurely cream tea.
Old Sarum (Old Salisbury)
Salisbury, despite its medieval street plan and wooden houses, is not that old comparatively for an English city. Modern day Salisbury grew around the Cathedral from the 13th century.
Its predecessor, Old Sarum , sits up on the hill above current day Salisbury. The battlements of the Iron Age Hill Settlement that it originally was are impressive and you can see the remains of the original Salisbury Cathedral and Norman Castle.
Getting to Salisbury by public transport
Salisbury by train
It is quite an attractive proposition to take a three or four day tour of the main English attractions .
There are frequent trains connecting Salisbury, Bath and Oxford . Oxford is 70 miles from Salisbury to the north east; Bath is 40 miles to the north west.
Frequent trains run from London's Waterloo station taking approximately 90 minutes to do the journey to Salisbury.
There are normally two trains an hour operating up until very late evening.

The Stonehenge Tour Bus is the only regular public transport to Stonehenge. It normally runs at least hourly and more frequently in the summer months. The Stonehenge Tour Bus also allows you to stop over at Old Sarum , which is worthwhile.
The journey itself is quite scenic. The Stonehenge Tour Bus starts from Salisbury Rail Station and also picks up at the Bus Station. There is no left luggage facility at the train station but the Railway Tavern, a pub by the station performs the left luggage role. Turn left on exiting the station and you will see the pub immediately along the approach rod to the station. Note - before 1200hrs you will need to ring the bell to drop off luggage.

London travel news LIVE: Bakerloo Line sees severe delays as strike-hit Tube stations reopen
LIVE – Updated at 11:32
The Bakerloo Line has been hit with severe delays as several Tube stations which were closed due to a strike have reopened.
There are severe delays on the Bakerloo between Queen's Park and Harrow & Wealdstone, and minor delays on the rest of the line over a faulty train.
Seven Tube stations, including Tower Hill, Regent’s Park and Hyde Park Corner, which had been closed earlier Thursday due to yesterday’s TSSA strike have since reopened.
Meanwhile, Greater Anglia train services running through Stratford may be cancelled because of signalling failures in the Lea Bridge area.
Southern trains running from London Victoria to Havant and Brighton are also disrupted after a “failure of the electrical supply” closed some lines.
Stansted Express delays continue
Delays to Stansted Express services between Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport are continuing due to a signalling fault in the Lea Bridge area.
Greater Anglia services between London Liverpool Street / Stratford / Hertford East and Cheshunt / Bishops Stortford / Cambridge / Harlow Town are also affected.
Services between London Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale are also severely disrupted following a road vehicle hitting a level crossing barrier earlier.
Elizabeth Line passengers warned of possible disruption
Passengers on the Elizabeth Line are being warned of possible disruption between Abbey Wood and Paddington because of a faulty train at Bond Street.
As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised until 10.30am, National Rail has said.
Last strike-hit Tube station reopens
The final Tube station which had been closed by strikes has now reopened.
Tower Hill Tube had been among the seven Tube stations still closed on Thursday morning due to Wednesday’s strike by members of the TSSA union.
CrossCountry train strike called off
A planned strike by CrossCountry rail workers on Saturday in a dispute over union recognition has been suspended, the RMT announced.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "With our members prepared to take strike action this weekend, CrossCountry management has seen the need to sit down with RMT to find a long-term resolution to this impasse.
"We have agreed to suspend strike action and take up this opportunity.
"But our strike mandate remains in place, so we will name new strike dates if that becomes necessary."
Severe delays on Bakerloo over train cancellations
There are severe delays between Elephant and Castle and Queen's Park due to train cancellations.
However, there is good service on the rest of the line.
Most Tube stations reopen but some remain closed
Six of the seven Tube stations that were closed earlier Thursday morning due to the after-effects of yesterday’s strike have since reopened.
These are: Hyde Park Corner, Manor House, Mornington Crescent, Southwark Tufnell Park and Warwick Avenue.
However, Tower Hill remains closed. Also closed is Kentish Town, for escalator works.
Overground and Stansted Express delays after trespass incident
There are delays on the Overground between Liverpool Street and Chingford / Cheshunt / Enfield Town due to an earlier trespasser on the track at Clapton.
Greater Anglia between London Liverpool Street and Hertford East / Cambridge / Ely services are also affected, as is the Stansted Express between London Liverpool St and Stansted Airport.
Southern services hit by power failure
Southern trains running from London Victoria, Havant and Brighton are disrupted over a failure of the electricity supply.
This has closed some lines, with passengers being warned that trains running between these stations may be cancelled.
Disruption is expected until 11am.
Passengers are being advised to not travel in the area between Horsham, Barnham and Worthing.
Which Tube stations are closed this morning?
Seven Tube stations are closed this morning due to a shortage of staff, TfL says.
These are: Hyde Park Corner, Manor House, Mornington Crescent, Southwark, Tower Hill, Tufnell Park and Warwick Avenue.
Separately, Kentish Town remains closed due to escalator repairs.
