Just came back from the morning half-day tour to the sand dunes and fairy stream. When the jeep didn’t arrive at 4.30am to collect me,I thought my Mui Ne trip had been turned into a disaster. But Mr.Trong was quick to resolve the problem by sending his friend (Vhuong)to take me to white sand dunes in his 3-day old brand new Chevrolet! And upon arriving at the parking of White Sand Dunes,I was greeted by the apologetic jeep driver and was immediately scorted to a waiting ATV for FREE! So yeah,I may have missed the actual sunrise on top of the dunes but I was compensated very very well 😉 Private ride,a stop at the beach for the sunrise, a commentary about Mui Ne from Mr.Vhoung, and a free ATV ride were more than enough to compensate the schedule mishap! Mr.Trong, thank you!20 days around Vietnam and my tour with you here in Mui Ne was the best!

Red Sand Dunes

The Red Sand Dunes, or Mui Ne Sand Dunes, are situated 25 kilometers from the heart of Phan Thiet City, close to the picturesque Hon Rom Beach. This easily accessible location has made the dunes a beloved playground and photography spot for both locals and tourists.

The Red Sand Dunes are a hub of excitement and beauty. Visitors can engage in thrilling sandboarding, gliding down the slopes and feeling the rush of adrenaline. As the day ends, the sunset over the dunes provides a magical spectacle, with the sky and sands bathed in a warm, glowing hue, creating a perfect canvas for photography enthusiasts. After a day of adventure, indulge in the local culinary delights, from fresh seafood to the famous Vietnamese pancake, Banh xeo, available at nearby eateries and from street vendors.

White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang)

Mesmerizing Mui Ne White Sand Dunes

Contrary to common belief, the White Sand Dunes, or Bau Trang, are not located in Mui Ne but in an adjacent district to Phan Thiet City. Specifically, they are in Hong Lam Hamlet, Hoa Thang Commune, Bac Binh District, Binh Thuan Province, approximately 30 kilometers from Mui Ne and 62 kilometers northeast of Phan Thiet City.

Stepping into the White Sand Dunes feels like entering a serene, otherworldly realm. The vast expanse of gleaming white sands creates a tranquil atmosphere that captivates every visitor. Adventure also calls here, with the opportunity to sandboard down the gentle slopes of the dunes. Early risers are rewarded with a majestic sunrise, as the first light of day gently illuminates the dunes, creating a scene of ethereal beauty that begs to be captured through the lens of a camera.

Both the Red and White Sand Dunes of Mui Ne offer visitors a mesmerizing escape into nature’s grandeur, with their contrasting colors and textures, and the array of activities they offer.

  • A Guide To Mui Ne...

The Breathtaking Red and White Sand Dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

There are sand dunes in Vietnam. Now you may be thinking “woah!” and “what?!” Yes, that’s what we thought, too. Here is everything you need to know about the sand dunes of Mui Ne , Vietnam.

Normally when you think of sand dunes, the Sahara or Namib desert come to mind. Lucky for you, you can spend your cash on a much cheaper flight ticket to Vietnam for a taste of the desert. And good dessert as well, but that’s a whole other blog .

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

Mui Ne is a beautiful fishing village down the south coast of Vietnam, and has two sets of giant sand dunes. Actually, there are sand dunes scattered throughout the whole region, making Mui Ne a rather colourful stop in your Vietnam itinerary . The two most impressive are the White and Red Sand Dunes.

How did they get there?

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

Sand dunes also form a natural barrier to destructive forces and are the first line of defence against coastal storms and beach erosion. They can absorb the impact of storms and prevent or delay the flooding of inland areas and damage to inland structures. Erosion of sand dunes due to human activity leaves shorelines vulnerable to damage from storms. Other than providing protection, sand dunes also provide habitat for fauna and flora, including rare endangered species .

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

White Sand Dunes of Mui Ne (Đồi Cát Trắng)

The White Dunes are the most popular attraction in Mui ne. It is just how you will imagine a desert to be — a vast expanse of pristine, barren land. The imposing dunes encapsulate the entire landscape, making you feel as if you are Laurence of Arabia, wandering through a desolate corner of the Sahara Desert.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

For the complete experience, visit these dunes for the sunrise. The morning rays dance across the landscape, creating an awe-inspiring and extremely photogenic view. The sand is untouched at this early hour and welcomes your footsteps on its soft, cool surface. Take advantage of this — walk around, snap over a hundred pictures, and enjoy the several lakes and swamps found right in the middle of this sandy desert.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

You can also hire a quad bike on arrival at the dunes. During the day, this experience is great fun as the dunes offer copious amounts of open space to let loose and go crazy. However, avoid the temptation at sunrise as the quad bikes are an ambiance-killer for those seeking a quiet sunrise. A dune buggy can be hired for 30 minutes for about VND$400,000V (USD$20.00), but the price can be bartered down a little. It certainly does save you from a tedious slog up and down.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

If you have a little more cash on you – you can go on a hot air balloon tour over the dunes. Mui Ne is the only place in Vietnam that offers hot air balloon rides so if you would like to tick this off your bucket list, then you can book your tour via Vietnam Balloons .

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

The Red Sand Dunes (Đồi Hồng)

The Red Sand Dunes are the smaller of the two and located directly next to the main coastal road running out of Mui Ne. These dunes are of a rusty red/brown colour and are absolutely beautiful come sundown. The only downside is that it gets quite crowded due to the close proximity, late hours, and as most tours end here, people will spend more time than usual loitering about. Don’t let this dishearten you — you will still find a beautiful spot to yourself to watch the beautiful sunset over the rolling red hills. The amber sand radiates an intense fiery red, allowing you to capture dramatic moments on film. Don’t be afraid to stray away from the main crowd so you can get your images without other people in them.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

Over here, the moment you park and make your way over to the dunes, you will find yourself chased by little children, no older than 13 years old, trying to get you to rent their sand boards for a few minutes so you can tumble down a hill or two. It will cost a measly dollar for a few rides down, and if you have no idea how to use it, they will teach you how. They will also laugh hysterically when you fall.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

How to get to the dunes

You can easily do sunrise and sunset tours by bus or jeep. These can be arranged at your hotel reception and can be as cheap as USD$5.00. The sunset tour to the Red Sand Dunes usually come with a stopover at the Fairy Springs, an ankle-deep stream surrounded by Grand Canyon-esque landscape on either side. It’s fun to wade through barefoot for an hour or so. You can check out the tour offered by The Sinh Tourist . It will cost you USD$7.00 and your transport will be a new, clean, and air-conditioned bus.

44 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, Mui Ne, Vietnam , + 84 62 384 7542

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

It will be an adventure to visit these places on your own on a rented motorcycle. A bike rental will cost you as little as USD$6.00 per day. To find the red dunes just follow the huge highway, Vo Nguyen Giap, that runs behind Mui Ne Beach. It will connect you to a large traffic circle, and the dunes are just off the roadside beyond this. The White Sand Dunes are a little less accessible and will take you about a 40-minute drive from the centre of Mui Ne. You will have to head east through Highway DT716 for 12 miles (20 kilometres). Follow the maps linked below.

White Sand Dunes, Hoa Thang, Bac Binh District, Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam.

Red Sand Dunes, 706B, Mui Ne, Phanh Thiet, Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

If you wish to avoid the masses of tourists that flock to these sites early in the morning/late in the day, you can go to the dunes during the hours in between, but it would be an absolute inferno.

Sina Abasnejad / @ Culture Trip

How to Get to the Mui Ne Sand Dunes

TripSavvy / Angelina Pilarinos

The White Sand Dunes just outside of Mui Ne are one of Vietnam's charming geological oddities .

Although most people visit the White Dunes on a tour, getting there yourself is pretty straightforward. Going at your own pace affords you time to really appreciate the area, have a picnic, wipe out a few times sledding down the hot slopes, and make an interesting day away from the beach.

Getting There

Outside of being extorted by a long-distance taxi, there are three options for reaching the sand dunes near Mui Ne: Tour jeep, bicycle, and motorbike. All three transportation choices come with advantages and disadvantages—choose what is best for you.

By Jeep Tour

Beautifully-battered and restored army jeeps ply the tourist stretch throughout Mui Ne. These jeeps can be booked for four-hour tours which take in both sets of dunes, the fairy stream, and sometimes the fishing village. Jeeps usually depart at 5 a.m. for sunrise in the dunes or 2 p.m. to catch the sunset. The drawback, as with joining other tours, is that you relinquish control of how much time is spent at each attraction. Go with certified guides or book through your accommodation to avoid frustrating surprises.

Depending on where you start along the tourist strip, the Red Dunes are around six miles away; an enjoyable cycling trip for anyone moderately fit. The Fairy Stream, at about three miles from the tourist strip, is along the way.

Although possible with enough blood, sweat, and desire, cycling to the White Dunes is not very enjoyable. The first half of the 22-mile journey is fairly easy, however strong winds along the coastal road and steep grades will have you wishing that your bicycle came with a motor!

By Motorbike

Riding motorbikes on the slightly-chaotic roads in Vietnam is not for the faint-hearted, however, the reward for a few near-death experiences is sheer, exhilarating freedom with beautiful scenery. Traffic along the coastal road outside of town is extremely light; the road is flat and straight and easy enough for novices. Fully-automatic motorbikes can be rented through your accommodation. If a few gear changes don't bother you, manual motorbikes are cheaper.

Before renting a motorbike , read about common motorcycle scams in Vietnam .

Most of the free tourist maps found around Mui Ne are an excuse to kill trees and print ads. Much to the delight of tour operators, few maps have accurate directions to the White Dunes. Getting there is fairly straightforward, however, a lack of signs can throw you off with one wrong turn.

Saddle up, strap on a helmet, and prepare for a ride to remember!

  • Begin your trip heading southwest—the beach will be on your right—along the tourist stretch into Mui Ne village; pass Joe's Art Cafe on the left and Pogo Club farther down on the right. If signs start turning to a mix of Russian and English, you have gone the wrong way on the strip!
  • Easy to miss, the Fairy Stream is reached by a rough path on the left side of the first small bridge that you cross. Continue past the charismatic fishing port on the right, then turn left at the large Christian church on the left; there is a traffic signal.
  • Drive to the end of the road, then turn left at the traffic signal. You will quickly reach a large traffic roundabout; take the first exit to the right. The photogenic Red Dunes will come into view on your left; you must pay 25 cents or buy a drink to park at one of the cafes across the street.
  • Continue past the Red Dunes on the long, coastal road for a bulk of your journey; go straight through the small town and past newly-constructed resorts. When the stretch of coastal road ends, turn left and continue up the hill ignoring what looks like grassy sand dunes on your right.
  • Pass the only petrol station on the right, then take the first red-clay road on your right; a sign indicates that you are near the White Dunes . The dirt road is rocky and unfinished—everything a motorbike driver doesn't enjoy. Continue bouncing along for some time with the sprawling lake on your left side. Do not worry about the White Dunes appearing so far away on the left, the road eventually wraps around the lake and brings you to the parking area.

Parking for the White Dunes costs a flat 25 cents; always lock up your motorbike! A small footpath leaves the left side of the parking area taking you through a park with cafes, beautiful strands of pine trees, and eventually to where the sand starts.

If you wish to try your luck, grab a sled rental before leaving the area; there are no options once in the dunes.

If you still wind up lost, try asking a local for Bau Trang which means "White Lake" in Vietnamese; good luck with the tones!

Visiting the Fairy Stream

Sometimes called the Fairy Springs, most people tack on a visit to the Fairy Steam when going to the Mui Ne Sand Dunes. A small, inconspicuous bridge along the main road to town—far before the fishing port—marks the entrance to the attraction.

Park your motorbike or bicycle at the cafe on the left for 25 cents, then proceed down the unfinished path. The fascinating smell comes from large, clay pots of fermenting fish sauce—a Mui Ne specialty—on the right. The small footpath weaves between houses where children will offer to guide you for a fee. No guide needed, just continue to where the path ends into a muddy stream.

Here you can either walk up the ankle-deep stream or take the steeper path to the right. Many people choose to make a circle and return via walking in the soft sand of the stream. Despite the magical name, a few interesting rock formations and a tiny canyon are the only highlights of the Fairy Steam.

S5- E12 - Out & About in Mui Ne – Laying bare to the winds of change What about Vietnam - Traveller Insights

  • Places & Travel

Here I am, "Out & About in Mui Ne," determined to share with you my findings as experienced through my eyes.  It's a down-to-earth exploration of Mui Ne's hidden treasures and unique vibe. This is as authentic as it gets! Drawing inspiration from a previous episode  S3- E17 I did with Nikki Cornish, I set out to explore this famous beachside location, known for its luxurious resorts like the Sailing Club Resort and its unique sand dune landscape. An Instagram favourite known to be very popular with travelling Russians, it is just a short three-hour drive away from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to improved highways, reaching Mui Ne was a breeze. I cover other other transportation options like trains and buses on the show however I opted for a private driver due to the bulk of luggage I had in tow. Lets just say, we let the winds be our guide to an interesting stay. The must see tourist attractions covered are: The Sand DunesThe Fairy StreamThe LighthouseI hope the detail I provide helps you with your trip planning. My stay gets very personal to me,  as we visit a close friend's family farm near Phan Thiet, providing a firsthand glimpse into Vietnam's agricultural heart. Having a local friend show us around made all the difference during our stay. This intimate connection not only enhanced our exploration of local seafood cuisine but also deepened our understanding of Vietnamese culture and the city's main population. Without my friend Linh’s guidance, I can candidly say we would have missed a lot. Her insights added layers of meaning to our experiences, turning an ordinary trip into a rich journey of discovery.  She really made the trip for me and she took the role as guide for the 3 days we were there. Travel Tip:- Mui Ne is not as Westerner-friendly as other cities, with a strong Russian presence and limited English-speaking locals. I advise doing research or consulting with a Travel agent or Guide to make the most of your visit. Or get in touch with yours truly to plan your Vietnam holiday complete. 01:00 - Inspiration for Visiting Mui Ne 02:18 - First Impressions /Getting There 03:57 - The wind factor/ Accommodation Tips 05:44 - Tourist Attractions  12:34 - How long to stay  20:31 - Mui Ne's ideal tourist Thank you for listening.
