5. Char Bhinti: For History Buffs

This is probably one of the most significant and widely famous historical sites in Satara, Maharashtra. Built in the year 1830 under the reign of Chhatrapati Pratapsinh to protect his kingdom from invaders. Explore Places to visit in Satara during Rainy Season : Monsoon Wanderings

Monsoons are always magical. It urges you for a long drive to Countryside and enjoy the weather. Exploring the tiny little eateries on our way, enjoying the music with the rains on our drive, this monsoon we discovered some hidden Gems in Satara. This is an off-beat place near Mumbai. There are a lot of places to visit in Satara . I explored some of these places which are worth visiting especially during the rains.

STAYCATION IN SATARA

We went for a short staycation at  THE FERN RESIDENCY HOTEL ,  SATARA for two-day stay. During our stay, we also discovered some interesting places in Satara . We enjoyed interacting with locals, the local food and much more in this small town. It is a perfect destination to unwind and take a break away from the busy city life.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SATARA

The places I visited in Satara were Chalkewadi Windmill Farm and Thoseghar Waterfalls . Both these places have beautiful locations and are situated on the same route. Well, the route towards these places is in a hilly region and have curvy roads. The roads are very well maintained. If you are looking for some adventure, then you can carefully drive through these roads to visit these beautiful and magical places.

CHALKEWADI WINDMILL FARM – PLACES TO VISIT IN SATARA

The first place we visited is the Chalkewadi Windmill Farm . This was a one-of-a-kind place. It seemed to be a dreamy place. A drive through the mountains with beautiful monsoon weather and fog all over. This journey towards the windmill Farm was delightful. Well, we then stopped our car to take some pictures of the beautiful windmills. The windmills were on the top of a mountain. It is a perfect location for photography. Grab some beautiful pictures for yourself at the Chalkewadi Windmill Farm during your visit.

There is a row of windmills. It feels like you are in a movie set. The cool breeze on the mountains made the atmosphere perfect to enjoy some time here. We clicked a few pictures. As it was raining heavily we could not stay here for a long time. Well, you can also visit this place in winter or any other season to get good pictures in a clear sky. It is located away on the outskirts of Satara city .

THOSEGHAR WATERFALLS – PLACES TO VISIT IN SATARA

This is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places to visit in Satara. A perfect location and a hidden gem to visit especially during monsoons. You have to buy tickets to enter the place. The ticket prices are nominal . As soon as you enter this place, you will find greenery around. There were benches to sit and relax. Also, there are toilets inside.

There are two trails heading towards two different waterfalls . We walked on a small trail for 15 minutes to see one of the waterfalls. The place and the trails are well-built and maintained. There are benches on the way to sit and enjoy the weather. Also, there were viewpoints to click pictures of the mountains and valleys along the way. It is an easy trail and you can reach the waterfall in a few minutes.

Thoseghar Waterfalls is one of the must-visit places in Satara . We enjoyed the whole experience.

EXPLORE LOCAL FOOD

I always try to have some local food from the places I visit. As Satara is in the State of Maharashtra , you get to try some relishing Maharashtrian Food which is also one of my favourites. Well, it is popular for Kandi Pedhe. People indulge in this sweet dish during their visit to Satara and get it packed for their relatives back home. You can find Kandi Pedhe at various sweet shops in the city.

Well, after a busy day walking through the Thoseghar Waterfall trails, we drove down the Hills and were super hungry. Strolling around the lanes of Satara , I found some eateries selling the popular Indian Street Food BHEL .

We then stopped at a local eatery called Sudarshan Bhel to try some of their dishes. We had Bhel and Sev Puri Dahi Puri also known as SPDP. This was a unique dish which was a combination of Sev Puri and Dahi Puri . I must say both the dishes were relishing. Enjoyed having Bhel on a rainy day. It is a perfect weather to indulge in some local street food.

We then walked around the lanes and indulged in Vada Pav which is also a popular Indian Street Food in Maharashtra. I must say, it was a great experience walking around and exploring the local food in the city.

So, this was one of the memorable journeys . A wonderful 2-day staycation exploring some of the beautiful places to visit in Satara.

By just talking about the monsoon, I can already imagine myself hogging on to pyaaz ka bhajiyaa, Samosa, Maggi, corn, cutting chai, and litchis for sure. It’s time to visit your favorite hill stations, trek in the rains and dance in waterfalls, along with discovering history.

Today, let’s give you an imaginative tour of one such hill station, Satara. We know you are probably thinking about the meaning of this name, so let us put you to ease. The name is derived from two words; Saat, meaning seven in Marathi and Tara, meaning hill, thus meaning seven hills surrounding the city. Satara city was famous in the 17 th century for being the capital of the Maratha Empire. It lies near the convergence of the river Krishna and its tributary, the Venna.

Don’t worry, we are not restricting you to visit it only during rains. The place is great in every season, be it summers, monsoon or winters. The climate is never really too hot during summers and neither extremely cold in winters. Though few hill stations experience a rise in temperature, this does not.

Best Way to Reach Satara

You can reach this place by the best three means of transportation: air, train, and road. Traveling to a hill station by road gives you another experience altogether. Driving on a hill with a little mist beside is really filmy. We advise you to be extremely careful while trekking and driving during rains as there are high chances of slipping and blurriness. By road: There are several private and public buses available as well from several bus depots like Borivali, Dadar, Thane, Mumbai Central and many more. You can also take NH48 to reach Satara which is around 250 km away from Mumbai.

Fantastic to Visit in Rainy Season

We were a group of 6 MBA friends, wanting to go on a short weekend trip, considering the monsoon season of 2012. Having rained for quite sometime, a little prior to what I thought was the normal time, we felt this can be a good trek. Upon a lot of discussions and deliberations (even for such small journey), the girls finally agreed to this place THOSEGHAR WATERFALLS, near Satara town in Maharashtra State. In and around Pune, post-rains is always a good time to go nearby. “Nearby” as per my definition is any place in the vicinity of 150 Kms. Nothing less than this :) Thoseghar Waterfalls is popular spot with tourists from Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur and nearby places within the 360 Degree ambit would like to visit. They are located around 20 kms from the main Satara Town, towards the beginning of Konkan belt. Best time to go there is obviously in the rainy season, preferably in the month of August. Thoseghar Waterfalls, as the name suggests, is known for the lush green surroundings, an area entirely covered with huge trees and the beautiful hazy waterfalls during the rainy season and the kind of haze that gets formed due to the deep waterfalls. Rains are pretty heavy in this part and it only adds to the natural beauty. There is also a pretty good construction made, platforms created for tourists to walk safely, without getting into the mud and also helping them in looking at the waterfalls. Some restaurants nearby are also available for having snacks, tea or coffee and even meals. The best way of course is by your own transport, a car or a bike is the best. However, public transport is also available. Following is the distance scale from various points: From Satara: 20 Kms From Pune: 130 Kms (Mumbai would be another 140 kms odd – same road) From Kolhapur: 150 Kms

The waterfall is located near Satara, further away from Sajjangarh fort. We had visited the place during rainy season and the road leading to the waterfall was picturesque. At Thoseghar, the waterfalls have to be viewed from a viewing platforms, built across the valley. The viewing platforms are surrounded by gardens and there is concrete pathway leading down to the platforms through the garden. Although the waterfalls are beautiful, during our visit, it was raining quite heavily and we did not much enjoy the whole experience of walking down and viewing the waterfalls.

A beautiful drive through the valley beyond Sajjanghad fort gets you to this amazing falls. The drive of 40kms is simply breath taking. I suggest you drive beyond thoseghar for another 5kms to arrive at the windmill farm. The chopping sound of the blades, with visibility restricted to moments between the passing clouds gives you chills along the spine!! The falls area is maintained by forest dept, a short walk through concrete promonade gets you to this natural marvel!! Enjoy !!

Though quite a known picnic spot near Satara, we were slightly disappointed as we could not get a good view of the waterfall due to tight security issues. Water flow was also little slowed down. We get the glimpse from a far point. There have been cases of accidents and hence tighter security. But due to popularity one can just go and visit once.

The waterfall itself can be only viewed from a distance. Would suggest spending some time here as there are close to 3 falls and there are short treks between the view points.

Well maintained site and a must see for all. Don't forget a full round else you'll miss out the real excitment.
