Anglo Saxons & Vikings
Explore the turbulent world of the Anglo Saxons and Vikings in 10 th Century AD in this exciting, hands-on workshop. Arrive at our settlement just after a Viking raid has taken place and see the effects it has had on the Anglo Saxon community. Our historical characters will help you examine what life was like for these two groups of people; considering home life, religion, work, battle, trade, food, language and geography. We can offer a single focus day on either Anglo Saxons or Vikings, or a combined programme for a compare/contrast study of both - just let us know what you prefer when you book.
Learning Outcomes:
Group size:.
This programme can accommodate 12-228 children . You will be allocated to a site (either Old Hall or Farm) depending on your group size and our availability.
Please note that groups of 100+ can only be supported from mid June - end of July. For large groups, period music and/or a falconry demonstration can be arranged for an additional charge.
Activities:
The programme will be mainly held outside (weather depending), so our team make a final decision about specific activities on the morning of the event. However, typical activities include: shelter building, outdoor cookery, threshing/winnowing, deer walk and weapons. Don't worry if the weather is poor, we have an indoor programme that is just as exciting and engaging so you won't miss out!
Our advice is to wear sensible shoes, dress warmly and for the weather. Remember - we are a period site without central heating!
Children are welcome to come dressed up for the visit. Consult our costume information sheet (PDF,177KB) for some outfit ideas.
This is our most popular programme and as a result, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment. Make an enquiry using our Schools Enquiry form or contact us to discuss your requirements at [email protected] / 01625 374428.
Risk Assessment:
Information about risk assessments and our health and safety procedures for this workshop.
Download our Viking information pack (PDF,1.50MB) as either a pre or post visit resource.

School Trips to The North West
About the north west.
There are some lovely, vibrant cities to visit in the North West, with a range of exciting visits. For art and music lovers, Liverpool is the place to go. It has more museums and galleries than anywhere outside of London and it is of course home to the wonderful Beatles!
Or head to the thriving cultural city of Manchester – although it may have been built on the heavy industry of the Industrial Revolution, it has since re-invented itself as a world capital of arts. If it’s history that takes your fancy, pay a visit to the walled city of Chester, which boasts the largest stone-built Roman Amphitheatre in Britain.
These are all fantastic locations for a diverse trip with lots of great opportunities. You could also combine lots of these visits to fully explore the region so do talk to us about how we can tailor your itinerary to just how you want it!

School Visits Lancashire
Inspiration and ideas.
Lancashire, or Lancs as it is often referred to, is a large county in North West England that includes towns such as Preston, Bolton and Wigan. Lancashire County Council is responsible for more than six hundred schools, including more than four hundred primary schools. If you also include Manchester, which was historically the central hub of the county, the area has the second largest concentration of people, behind London and the demand for school trips is huge.
School Trips and Lancashire's Industrial Heritage
In a historical context, every school child knows that the county of Lancashire was famous during the industrial revolution, with a skilled work force inherited from the local woollen industry, it was no surprise that the cotton mills located in the north west to take advantage of the skills, the rivers flowing down from the Pennines, and the abundance of rich coal seams at the heart of many Lancashire boom towns. This rich industrial legacy makes Lancashire a superb place to study the development of industry and its influence on British history. There are a great many textile museums, museums dedicated to steam, and of course the famous Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
Lancashire council itself helps maintain a number of museums that cover subject areas ranging from maritime history to stately homes. Their ethos is to provide your pupils with opportunities to explore and be expired by Lancashire’s rich heritage, through interactive displays and special events throughout the school year.

Southwest Ohio teams to see major changes in OHSAA football realignment
The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors approved the 2024 football divisional breakdowns and regional assignments Thursday during its April board meeting.
The largest 70 schools are placed in Division I, and all remaining schools are divided equally into Divisions II through VII, with about 106 schools per division.
Among the highlights of teams moving due to realignment, two of the area’s most consistently successful teams: Badin and Winton Woods, move up a division due to competitive balance.
Three of Southwest Ohio’s northernmost programs, Lebanon, Middletown and Springboro, have been moved out of Region 4 in Division I to Region 2, where they could face longer trips in the playoffs.
OHSAA member schools may opt to move up to Division I if Referendum Issue 1B passes this spring. Results of the referendum voting will be announced May 16.
Earlier this spring, the OHSAA received updated base enrollment data from the Ohio Department of Education to use for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. In football, competitive balance data from the previous season is used each season to create a new adjusted enrollment count.
The Board of Directors also approved the 2024 football regulations. The official start date for practice is Thursday, Aug. 1. High schools can schedule scrimmages with other schools after one full day of contact practice has been completed.
Beginning May 15, schools may have 13 days of practice without pads or hitting. An additional five days are allowed starting July 15 for schools to complete the mandatory five-day acclimatization period, if they choose.
Here are the regional alignments for Southwest Ohio football teams, with notes about the teams changing classes.

Over the Garden Fence: Celebrating Arbor Day at school schools and a park
Some trips over the garden fence really take you on a journey. When we left Bucyrus last week for Defiance, it was to attend a celebration. The Northwest Ohio awards for Tree Cities in this part of the state were to be presented in Defiance at their F.O.E. (Fraternal Order of Eagles). Tree Commission members Andy Furner and I took Bonnie Welsh, director of communications for Bucyrus, with us.
Defiance's entire corps of city workers was wearing lavender shirts. A year ago the city celebrated a bicentennial and planted 200 lilac trees, so the lilac color was in vogue. A lilac bloom graced the program cover. We were each given a lilac seedling. Our cookies were even drizzled in lavender icing.
A city with 30 years experience as a Tree City, Defiance had it together. Forty-three cities, some with as many as 44 years of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the quality of life, were recognized. Bucyrus is at seven. Yes, we are the youngest. We have the least experience.
We submit to the Division of Forestry our records showing (a) a tree ordinance, (b) an active tree commission, (c) a forestry program supported by a minimum of $2 per capita and (d) an annual Arbor Day proclamation with a public observance. The Urban Forestry Assistance Program views applications and, through the regional urban forester, recommends a city to the Arbor Day Foundation.
This may sound easy, but having plans for a city takes vision, work and a city administration which cooperates with the long-range planning. It is happening here. Serving as a tree commissioner is a volunteer job. After the recognitions and door prizes were managed we left.
Award in hand, city ready for Arbor Day
Our day was not finished. We drove part-way home when rain started to fall heavily. We came upon a highway mishap involving eight automobiles strewn in several directions. State Highway Patrol cars warned us with blue and red lights, about eight of them. Oh, my. By the time we rolled into town, it was obvious that a tornado had gone through. Damages to store fronts and no electricity made that clear.
Here we are now in the week which brings Arbor Day, April 26. The Bucyrus Tree Commission is ready. We would like to urge the community to join us as we plant trees at the elementary school and the high school. We have been presented with a tree by the Division of Forestry which is celebrating 75 years as a branch of ODNR.
We have formed an alliance with the Earth, Wind and Flowers Garden Club, which is providing tree seedlings to third graders secured from the Soil and Water Conservation District. The youngsters are receiving an assortment of white pine, overcup oak and red maple trees. There is an Arbor Day Proclamation from Mayor Truka which will be read at each planting.
This is our schedule for Arbor Day, tomorrow, April 26 (rain or shine):
- 9 a.m. - Bucyrus Elementary School. School representatives join commission members to plant a "Sunbeam" locust tree. Afterwards, we will move inside the building for seedling presentations with the garden club.
- 11 a.m. - The tree commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Division of Forestry will be planted at Aumiller Park near the pool with division representatives and commission members.
- 1 p.m. - Bucyrus High School (east lawn beyond the drive). Student representatives and staff join commission members to plant an "October Glory" maple tree.
Please know you are invited to be with us at one or more of the celebrations throughout the day. This is a tradition which will continue in this city.
After viewing the damages in town, in the park, on the golf course and on many residential properties, it is apparent that planning lies ahead for the Bucyrus Tree Commission.

Middle school can be tough for girls. Here's what IPS is doing to empower these students
Judely “Juju” Agenor and Robyn Lyles already have regrets about things they’ve done when they were younger —and they’re only in the seventh grade.
On a recent afternoon, Judely and Robyn reflected on their past as they penned letters to their younger selves in the Northwest Middle School media center.
Robyn said she warned her younger self to be careful about the friends she chooses and Judely agreed, adding some advice of her own.
“But also to not let anyone say I’m not good at something when I know I am,” Judely said.
Judely and Robyn were among the 50 girls at Northwest, Arlington and Longfellow Middle Schools who participated in a pilot after-school program this year with Girls Inc., a national organization that provides mentorship and empowerment programming.
Starting next school year, IPS will offer Girls Inc.'s “EmpowerHub” program for sixth-grade girls in all seven of its middle schools.

The free and voluntary program will meet during the school day and before or after school and is designed to help foster healthy lifestyles, improve academic achievement, build life skills and expose girls to STEM-related fields.
The program provides girls with 35 to 50 hours of mentoring each school year and will follow participants through middle school, said Michelle Freeman, vice president of programs at Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis.
“That way we can see what kind of outcomes we have at the end of the school year,” Freeman told IndyStar. “Did we decrease absenteeism? Did we increase some of our school and academic achievement markers, like seeing testing scores increase?”
Northwest Middle School Vice Principal Pat Lumbley said this kind of programming is vital for young girls, especially during the middle school grades when negative behaviors such as fighting and bullying can escalate.
“They’re getting to the age where they’re making relationships now by choice and not just geography or based on who you live nearest too,” Lumbley said. “…Now when you’re in middle school, you start making friends based on what you want in a friend and who you share interests with.”

The program's curriculum includes lessons on healthy lifestyle choices, such as how social media can present unhealthy beauty standards for women and how to avoid aspects of social media that can be detrimental to young girls' mental health.
The girls also go on field trips to places like the Newfields Art Museum and visit the Girls Inc. Indianapolis headquarters.
Northwest Middle School Dean of Students Moshfilay McClain-Anderson said she’s seen many middle school girls struggle to build relationships and the Girls Inc. program at Northwest has helped them connect, she said.
“Just seeing the electricity and the excitement that the girls have to be part of anything after school is just amazing to see,” McClain-Anderson said.
Both Judely and Robyn have seen their grades improve since they began the program in October. They serve as school ambassadors and Robyn is on the student council.
And, their experiences today may help shape their tomorrows. Last week the two wrote to their future selves. Girls Inc. will save those letters for them until they graduate from high school.

Wamego veterans and students honor Vietnam soldiers on Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC
WASHINGTON D.C. (Gray DC) - Wamego High School students paired up with Kansas veterans for their annual Honor Flight.
VFW post 1786 commander Michael Riley says sharing an honor flight with fellow Kansas veterans is moving. The first thing Riley and the group did was honor a friend who was selected for this flight, but passed away before the trip.
“His wife gave me his flag. So that we could honor him today,” Riley explained. ”Just to remember our fallen brothers as well.”
Riley says times are different now than when he returned home from Vietnam.
“If you see anybody that says anything about Vietnam, you say ‘welcome home, brother’.”
When the veterans returned from their service decades ago, they didn’t receive a warm welcome. Fast forward to today, they are finally getting the respect they deserve.
“Coming home wasn’t good,” Korean War Veteran George Waugh said. “We weren’t received home very well… left a bad taste in my mouth.”
Waugh is visiting the war memorials alongside his grandson, Ryan. He’s happy younger generations are more appreciative of his service.
“It’s very special because some see it as an opportunity that not everybody gets to have,” Ryan Waugh said. “Some see it as a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
