14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

senior travel clubs

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. You've worked hard your whole life and dreamed of traveling to several exotic locations. Now that you've retired, it's time to hit the road (or runway). Perhaps you want to travel with your spouse, join a group of older adults, or join family or friends on their vacations. The options are limited only by your pocketbook and your imagination.

In this guide, we'll cover travel tips for seniors, ways to save, and group trips to explore.

Senior Travel Tips

Before you travel, be sure to purchase travel insurance to cover unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical expenses, lost luggage, and other incidents associated with travel. Since medical issues are more likely to come up for older travelers, it makes sense to purchase travel insurance in case the trip must be canceled due to a medical problem.

Pro Tip: Looking for travel insurance but don't know where to start? View our list of the best travel insurance for seniors in 2024 .

Check what your health insurance covers when you're out of the country. Many Medicare supplemental insurance plans do not provide coverage outside of the US. Travel insurance provides this much-needed coverage.

Although most people dream of traveling during retirement, according to a report,  Journey to Healthy Aging: Planning for Travel in Retirement , only 18% of Americans have specifically saved for retirement travel. This means that most Americans will need to be creative to fulfill their wanderlust after retirement.

Some ways you can save on travel and vacation costs include:

  • Group trips : Because travel agencies purchase tickets in bulk, they can pass the savings on to you. Group travel is generally led by expert guides steering you towards the best things to do while at specific locales. If you're traveling solo, it's a great way to do so without feeling alone.
  • Off-season travel : Since you're retired and no longer tied to a time clock, you have the flexibility of traveling during off-peak travel times. This allows you to take advantage of lower rates. Flights on Monday through Wednesday, especially those during the late morning or afternoon, cost less. Off-season travel gives you further savings on accommodations and attractions. Three great places to find discount flights are The Flight Deal, Secret Flying, and HolidayPirates.
  • Honey travel : According to Travel+Leisure, Honey generally offers hotel discounts better than those you'll find on other booking sites.  Honey is a free service (a browser extension) that automatically searches for discounts and coupon codes.
  • Senior discounts : Many organizations and retailers offer senior discounts, so be sure to inquire about them as you make reservations and as you travel. Members of AARP , AAA, and veterans' groups can receive discounts at hotels, airlines, tour providers, and car rental agencies. The National Park Service sells an $80 (plus a $10 handling fee) for a lifetime senior pass to those 62 and older. Some airlines offer a limited number of senior fares. Many hotels offer senior discounts .
  • Stay at hostels : Hostels offer affordable places to stay when traveling. Hostels are popular with younger travelers, so be prepared to run into a lot of partiers during your stay. But as one senior shared, if there's too much activity in a hostel, they won't have lost much money should they decide to move on. Sites to help locate a hostel include Hostels.com, HostelWorld.com, Hosteling International, and Hostel Bookers.
  • Stay at an Airbnb : An Airbnb offers someone's home as a place to stay instead of a hotel. Accommodations may be an entire home or someone's spare room. You can find unique accommodations ranging from a castle to an igloo.
  • Additional resources : Kiplinger.com provides a list of sites for the best travel deals to help you save money. Cruise Sheet and Vacations To Go are great places to locate discounts on cruises, although they may not be senior-specific.  Intrepid, Kiwi Experience (New Zealand), Context Travel (walking tours), and BusAbout are great places to find discounts on tours and excursions, especially last minute. But again, they may not be senior-specific.

No matter what kind of organization or group you choose to travel with, it’s important to plan sufficiently for your trip. If you have special needs, touch base with the group to ensure they can accommodate your needs. The  Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality  offers travel tips and access information for travel destinations. They also have a great listing of disability travel websites.

Senior Travel Groups and Clubs

  • Senior travel clubs and groups :  Senior travel clubs/groups organize trips for members, offering vacation packages at great rates. It also provides a wonderful way for solo vacationers to travel with a group of like-minded seniors.  ElderTreks, Row Adventures, and Walking the World specialize in adventure travel, something many older adults are searching for. Before joining a club, be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau and read their literature, especially the fine print, to ensure the group you have chosen is reputable.
  • Educational travel : Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization and was once known as Elderhostel International .  It offers thousands of affordable learning adventures for adults, both nationally and internationally. Some scholarships are available for those who don't have the financial means to participate.
  • Voluntourism : A volunteer vacation allows you to give back in a multitude of ways and enjoy various cultures, depending upon the organization you volunteer and travel with. The trips aren't free, but they are rewarding and provide an economical way to visit a particular area. National and international opportunities are available. Some organizations to check out include REI Adventures, American Hiking Society, Discover Corps, Global Volunteers, and Earth Watch. Many others are available.

Benefits of Senior Travel

Travel during retirement is more than an enjoyable activity. It's good for you!

  • It keeps you active, and older adults who are more physically active have lower rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and many other diseases.
  • It stimulates and challenges your brain as you encounter new people, cultures and environments.
  • It reduces stress and improves your mood and outlook on life.
  • It strengthens and deepens friendships.

And, it's just plain fun! So, get out and enjoy a vacation. You've earned it!

senior travel clubs

By Patricia Doherty, Travel + Leisure

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

The benefits of travel , whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees or seniors who have time and a travel budget , the opportunities are nearly endless. The world and even their own city, state, or country are waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience, careers, ages, hometowns, and beliefs have taken them in many directions. Their interests, abilities, values, and habits may be different, but it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. Senior Group Adventure Travel

Plenty of baby boomers ages 50 and over want to not only travel with a group of people within their age group but also want their travels to be adventurous. This can include activities that are water-related, such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and rafting, or it may include taking in the scenery with a hike, riding horseback, or some other physical activity. The important thing to consider when traveling with a senior group on an adventure such as this is that you'll have to be in moderately good physical shape. You can find a number of resources that provide adventurous group travel for seniors. Here are a few of them:

Elder Treks

Elder Treks is the world's first adventure travel company that was designed exclusively for people ages 50 and over. They have an extensive list of destinations to choose from and it would be well worth checking out their website.

ROW Adventures

Walking the World

Senior Volunteer Vacations

Many seniors volunteer in their communities, but not everyone is aware of the opportunities to volunteer while on vacation. A number of projects and agencies have a history of long-term projects perfect for seniors to contribute their skills and time while on vacation:

American Hiking Society

You can give back and volunteer through the American Hiking Society to help maintain the hiking trails. Individuals of any age and experience level can become trail stewards.

Handsup Holidays

Handsup Holidays allows you to make a difference when you volunteer while on a luxury family trip. This trip not only allows you to see the amazing sights but also to interact with the local people and give back through volunteering. Their destinations are in North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.

Travel With a Challenge

Travel with a Challenge has many different volunteer vacation options available that would embrace the interests of adults of any age. Another bonus is the low-budget cost of these vacations once you reach your volunteer destination.

Finding the Right Senior Travel Group

A number of factors should be taken into consideration when choosing the right travel group for you. First, if you want to travel with seniors, the first criteria will be to consider groups comprised of people 50 years and older. Second, you'll want to determine what is important to you as you travel. This can include things like your budget for the trip as well as what you want to do on your vacation and where you want to go. As you plan, items to consider include:

  • Free time available vs. scheduled activities.
  • Difficulty level of, and pace of, activities.
  • High end, all-inclusive vs. budget tours.

Benefits of Traveling as a Group

Traveling as a group offers a number of benefits. Groups can save money on transportation and hotels and tours are a great way to meet other seniors. Another benefit often overlooked is the safety afforded when traveling as a group. For instance, tours require different levels of physical ability. Group tour guides will make the level of difficulty known to groups whereas this information is often overlooked for those who are traveling independently.

Plan Ahead for Senior Vacations

No matter what kind of group you decide to travel with, it is important to plan well before leaving. If you have special needs, contact the travel group coordinator to find out if the tour or trip can accommodate your needs. For information on accessibility while traveling, visit Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality to see if the areas you plan to visit can accommodate your needs. If you've never traveled with a group, you may want to consider a senior travel club to help make the process easier. Once you get information on a group, read the literature, including the fine print, and be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau to be sure the group you've chosen is reputable.

Enjoy Your Vacation

Planning your trip well will ensure that the vacation is not only fun-filled and informative or adventurous but also relaxing and energizing at the same time. Trips that go off without a hitch leave you free to enjoy every minute of every activity.

What is a Senior Travel Club

While there are numerous benefits of joining a senior travel club, one of the biggest is the opportunity to make new friends. Unlike a travel agency, a senior travel club can help seniors plan trips and get paid to cover their expenses. An excellent senior travel club will charge a small membership fee, but you’ll often find that the cost is worth it. Most of these clubs will offer personal contact and advice on planning a trip.

Senior travel clubs are a great way to meet new people and take a vacation. There are many advantages to joining one, such as traveling with like-minded adults, potential discounts, and safety in numbers. In addition to discounts, most groups allow members to split planning duties and let someone else drive. Considering these benefits, it’s worth checking out a senior travel club. There are many outing options for seniors to choose from.

A senior travel club can help seniors plan trips, make new friends, and create lifelong memories. It’s a good idea to join a senior travel club before traveling alone. It is best to check with your local senior center before signing up with a group. Some of the smaller groups may be more expensive than the larger national ones, so check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure they’re reputable.

Besides offering trips, a senior travel club can also help seniors make new friends. While there are many benefits of traveling with a group, there are some significant disadvantages. Several of them may not be worth the time and money. Some are just there to make money off of seniors. You can also check out reviews from other members of a senior travel club to find the best one for you. There are many advantages of joining a senior travel club.

In addition to the perks, a travel club will also help seniors save money on flights and accommodations. If you are unsure, make a list of the locations you’d like to visit. Once you have a list of destinations that interest you, look for a travel club that offers them.

When choosing a travel club, be careful of scams. A travel club is not just for people who are physically challenged. It is a great way to make new friends and enjoy the company’s services. In addition, a senior travel club can be a great way to meet other people and have fun. However, there are several disadvantages. First of all, traveling with other seniors can increase your safety and deter criminals.

While choosing a travel club that suits your interests is essential, you should also check whether the group offers discounts for older travelers. A travel club that provides discounts on senior prices can benefit senior citizens. If you’re not interested in traveling with a group, you can find a travel club that caters to a particular interest. The benefits of a travel club will help you save money on your vacation.

A travel club that is suitable for you and your family. A senior travel club is a great way to make new friends while traveling. Some clubs can be expensive, but the price will be worth it. Perks of traveling single with Intrepid

Travelers toasting on an Intrepid tour in Morocco

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people traveling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it  happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of traveling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Traveling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re traveling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our tours.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Vacations with Purpose for Seniors

Meaningful Trips for Seniors & Boomers

Did you ever dream of joining the Peace Corps? Or do you simply crave a vacation that will take you deep into the heart and soul of a country and allow you to share your lifetime of experience with others? Whatever the case, our vacations with purpose are perfect for seniors who want to lend a hand, explore a new country, spend time with wildlife, and make new friends.

We have vacations with purpose for all ages, backgrounds, and physical capabilities. Volunteer hours range from 1- 16 hours during your trip, and the purposeful projects differ greatly – while some projects have you working with children in a classroom, others are a simple walk on a nature trail with conservationists. Our knowledgeable team of Travel Specialists will work with you to plan out the perfect trip based on any special considerations you might have.

Activities for All Abilities

While most of our travelers are over age 50, we recognize that not everyone over fifty is the same.  This is why we have created an activity level scale that allows you to choose the trip that is right for you. This means that you won’t be surprised by the level of activity on your chosen adventure, and you can plan accordingly. A few aspects to keep in mind about our trips:

  • You stay in upscale lodging , usually 4.5-star distinctive lodges and boutique hotels
  • There is flexibility built-in to each itinerary
  • Purposeful projects are designed specifically for families and older adults, which means the level of difficulty feels more like a meaningful vacation than a service project
  • The amount of volunteering you do depends on the trip you choose, with anywhere between 1-16 hours throughout the duration of the trip
  • Trips run anywhere between 4-10 days

We define volunteer travel and vacations with purpose as travel in which one actively participates, as opposed to a tour, where guests are passive observers. Request our catalog to see which trips number of volunteer hours and physical activity is right for you.

Tanzania volunteer vacation

Discover Corps has always put a focus on multi-generational and skip-gen (grandparents and grandchildren only) travel. We recognize that grandparents and grandchildren have different needs and wants, but everyone wants to be able to spend time together. It’s a blend you have to work hard to make happen, but it is possible with the right type of trip and paying attention to the right details such as accommodation choices, wake-up times, flexibility, and more.

Whether it’s a wildlife research project, dinner with a local family on their farm, or learning about the history of an ancient city, purposeful projects and volunteer vacations can bring out the best in a family by unifying them around a common goal.

Plus, we know traveling as a family can get expensive, so families of six or more qualify for our  Group Discount  of up to $350 off per person!

Each day I thought we had reached the high point of the trip, but then the next day always offered another rich experience. Broadening my knowledge of Peru and its people was very important. The trip exceeded any expectation that I had…the warmth, generosity, skill, knowledge of the guide, Miguel, the variety of experiences we participated in – Inka history, social projects, connection with the people, and especially the children – made for an unforgettable trip.  Rainbow   Mountain was one of the most deeply spiritual experiences I’ve ever had.

5 Travel Groups for Black Seniors

In the vibrant tapestry of life, travel has always been an essential thread, weaving unforgettable experiences and cherished memories. For many seniors, the allure of exploring new destinations and immersing themselves in diverse cultures remains ever-present.

However, amidst the plethora of travel opportunities, there exists a particular group whose unique experiences and perspectives have often been overlooked: Black seniors.

  • Black Girls Travel Too – Black Girls Travel Too is a travel community and movement empowering Black women to explore the world, promoting representation, and organizing group trips to culturally significant destinations.
  • Travel Noire – Travel Noire is a digital platform and community that celebrates and empowers Black travelers by providing them with inspirational content, travel resources, and a supportive network to encourage exploration and cultural immersion around the world.
  • Black Travelers International – Black Travelers International (BTI) is a minority-owned and woman-owned business helping its members through transformative travel experiences, fostering inclusivity, and creating a supportive community for Black travelers worldwide.
  • Sisters Traveling Solo – Sisters Traveling Solo is a travel company empowering women, especially Black women, to confidently embrace solo travel, fostering a safe and supportive community for like-minded adventurers to explore the world together.
  • Black & Abroad – Black & Abroad is a pioneering travel group and cultural collective empowering Black travelers through immersive experiences, representation, and community building, with a focus on celebrating Black culture and heritage worldwide.

In recent times, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of inclusivity and representation in all spheres of life, including the world of travel. Black seniors, with their rich histories, wisdom, and zest for life, deserve to embark on voyages that cater to their unique interests and preferences. Travel groups dedicated to serving the needs of Black seniors have emerged as beacons of inclusivity and cultural celebration.

Why Choose a Travel Group for Black Seniors

Choosing travel groups specifically tailored for Black seniors offers a variety of compelling reasons that cater to their unique needs, interests, and desires. Here are some key reasons why you might opt for such specialized travel groups.

Cultural Connection and Heritage Exploration

Travel groups for Black seniors often curate itineraries that focus on destinations with significant historical and cultural importance to the Black community. These trips provide opportunities to explore ancestral roots, historical landmarks, and heritage sites, fostering a deeper sense of connection and understanding of their cultural heritage.

Inclusive and Supportive Environment

In a travel group comprising Black seniors, individuals can find a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where they feel understood and valued. The shared experiences and perspectives within the group create a sense of camaraderie, making it easier for members to bond and form lasting friendships.

Catering to Unique Preferences

Travel groups for Black seniors often consider the specific preferences and interests of their members, ensuring that the itineraries and activities align with their tastes and desires. This tailored approach enhances the overall travel experience, making it more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Safety and Security

Safety is a significant concern for seniors when traveling. Black senior travel groups take special care to address safety concerns and provide appropriate accommodations and assistance, giving peace of mind to the travelers and their families.

Understanding Cultural Nuances

Local guides and tour operators within these travel groups are well-versed in the cultural nuances and sensitivities of the destinations they visit. This understanding ensures that Black seniors can experience new cultures authentically and respectfully.

Enriching Educational Experiences

Travel groups often incorporate educational components into their trips, including lectures, workshops, and guided discussions about relevant historical events and cultural topics. This enriching aspect of travel enhances the overall experience, fostering personal growth and enlightenment.

Access to Unique Opportunities

Some travel groups offer exclusive access to events, festivals, or venues that celebrate Black culture and history. These opportunities might not be as readily available to mainstream travelers, making the journey even more special and memorable.

Creating Lasting Memories

Traveling with a group of like-minded individuals fosters an environment of shared joy and celebration. The memories created during these journeys can become cherished stories to be shared with loved ones for years to come.

Travel Groups for Black Seniors

These groups provide an inclusive, supportive, and culturally enriching environment, empowering Black seniors to embark on memorable journeys that celebrate their heritage and personal growth. By choosing such groups, travelers can foster a deeper connection with their roots, create lasting friendships, and contribute to a more diverse and representative travel industry.

Black Girls Travel Too

Black Girls Travel Too is a travel community and movement dedicated to empowering and encouraging Black women to explore the world. Founded in 2015 by Danny Rivers-Mitchell, this group aims to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for Black women travelers, encouraging them to embark on transformative journeys and celebrate their unique identities and experiences.

The mission of Black Girls Travel Too is to promote and facilitate travel experiences for Black women, emphasizing the importance of representation in the travel industry. The group seeks to break stereotypes and barriers, showing that Black women can be intrepid explorers, adventurers, and globetrotters.

Black Girls Travel Too operates as an active community, primarily using social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to connect with its members. Through these platforms, the group shares travel stories, tips, destination highlights, and inspirational content to inspire and uplift its followers.

One of the cornerstones of Black Girls Travel Too is organizing group travel experiences. These group trips are carefully curated to offer enriching and culturally immersive experiences for participants. The trips often focus on destinations with historical significance for the Black community or places that celebrate Black culture.

Beyond travel experiences, Black Girls Travel Too places a strong emphasis on empowerment and education. They conduct workshops and events aimed at boosting the confidence and independence of Black women travelers. Topics covered may include travel safety, solo travel, navigating cultural differences, and the importance of self-care during travel.

The group actively advocates for diversity and inclusion within the travel industry. Black Girls Travel Too believes in the power of representation and encourages travel companies, tourism boards, and media outlets to embrace and celebrate the diversity of travelers.

Travel Noire

Travel Noire is a groundbreaking digital platform that was founded in 2013 by Zim Ugochukwu. It was created with the aim of addressing the lack of representation and diversity in the travel industry, specifically for Black travelers. The platform’s mission is to inspire, uplift, and empower Black travelers by providing them with the tools, resources, and support they need to embark on meaningful and transformative journeys.

At its core, Travel Noire is all about empowerment. It seeks to break down barriers and dispel stereotypes by showcasing the experiences of Black travelers from around the world. The platform celebrates the rich diversity within the Black community and encourages individuals to embrace their identities while exploring different cultures and destinations.

Travel Noire’s website and social media channels are filled with compelling and visually stunning content. Through vibrant photos, engaging articles, and captivating videos, the platform shares travel stories, destination highlights, travel tips, and personal experiences from Black travelers. This content serves as a source of inspiration, encouraging others to step out of their comfort zones and embark on their own adventures.

One of the key strengths of Travel Noire is its sense of community. It provides a safe and supportive space where Black travelers can connect, share their travel experiences, and exchange valuable tips and advice. The platform fosters a sense of belonging, creating opportunities for like-minded individuals to form meaningful connections and friendships.

In addition to inspirational content and community engagement, Travel Noire offers practical travel resources to assist its audience in planning their trips. These resources may include travel guides, destination recommendations, budgeting tips, visa and immigration information, and safety advice. By providing valuable resources, Travel Noire aims to make the travel planning process smoother and more accessible for Black travelers.

Travel Noire organizes group travel experiences known as “Travel Noire Experiences.” These trips are carefully curated to offer participants authentic and culturally immersive journeys to various destinations around the world. Travelers can connect with locals, participate in unique activities, and build lasting memories in a supportive group setting.

Travel Noire’s presence and success have had a positive impact on the travel industry, promoting greater representation and recognition of Black travelers. The platform has been influential in encouraging travel companies, tourism boards, and media outlets to be more inclusive and diverse in their marketing and storytelling.

Over the years, Travel Noire has grown to become a globally recognized brand, reaching and inspiring millions of people across different countries and continents. Its influence continues to expand as more and more Black travelers find empowerment and motivation through its content and community.

Black Travelers International

Black Travelers International (BTI) is a minority-owned and woman-owned business with a mission to empower its members through the experience of travel. The organization invests significant time and research into planning the perfect destination getaways, ensuring a memorable and enriching experience for its travelers. BTI aims to create a supportive and welcoming space for Black travelers, celebrating their unique perspectives, experiences, and identities.

BTI curates unforgettable trips and adventures that go beyond the ordinary, recognizing travel as a transformative tool for personal growth and cultural exchange. As part of the Black travel group, members join a vibrant community of like-minded individuals, fostering friendships and connections through shared experiences. The itineraries are thoughtfully designed to cater to diverse interests, offering a balanced mix of exhilarating adventures, cultural immersions, and moments of relaxation.

The organization believes travel can be a profound learning experience, allowing members to discover their ancestral roots, connect with their heritage, and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures. With a commitment to responsible travel practices, BTI aims to leave a positive impact on the places visited, preserving local cultures and promoting sustainable tourism.

Whether seasoned travelers or first-time explorers, individuals are welcome to join BTI on its next adventure, discovering new cultures, savoring diverse cuisines, and forming lasting connections with a community that shares their sense of wonder and wanderlust. Together, Black Travelers International invites travelers to journey beyond borders and embrace the transformative magic of travel.

Sisters Traveling Solo

Sisters Traveling Solo is a travel company that goes beyond merely organizing trips; it is a movement dedicated to empowering women to embrace the world with confidence and independence. Founded by Cole Banks, a Black woman with a passion for solo travel, the company’s inception was inspired by a post online that discouraged Black women from embarking on solo journeys. Determined to challenge this narrative, Cole set out to create a platform that not only encouraged women, especially Black women, to travel solo but also provided them with the tools, support, and community to do so safely and fearlessly.

At Sisters Traveling Solo, the primary focus is on solo and small group women’s travel experiences. The company recognizes that solo travel can be a transformative and empowering experience, allowing women to step outside their comfort zones, build self-confidence, and discover their inner strength. With this in mind, each trip is expertly crafted to cater to the unique needs and desires of solo female travelers, ensuring a safe, supportive, and enriching journey.

The core mission of Sisters Traveling Solo is to create a secure community for solo female travelers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and sisterhood among women from diverse backgrounds and experiences. In this supportive environment, women can share their travel stories, offer valuable insights, and form meaningful connections with like-minded adventurers.

The company believes in the power of travel to create lasting memories and transformative experiences. Through carefully curated trips, Sisters Traveling Solo aims to inspire women to embrace their wanderlust, broaden their horizons, and challenge preconceived notions about solo travel. Each itinerary is thoughtfully designed to provide a perfect blend of cultural immersion, adventure, relaxation, and personal growth.

Sisters Traveling Solo recognizes the importance of representation in the travel industry, especially for Black women, and actively works to break down barriers and inspire others to see the world without hesitation. Cole Banks’ vision of creating a platform that encourages and empowers women, particularly those who might face societal barriers, has resonated with countless travelers seeking to embark on their own solo adventures.

Beyond the destinations visited, Sisters Traveling Solo has become a symbol of female empowerment, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of exploration. It serves as a testament to the strength and unity of women travelers who refuse to wait for others and boldly venture into the world, creating their own unforgettable stories along the way.

Black & Abroad

Black & Abroad is a dynamic travel group and cultural collective that has emerged as a trailblazer in the travel industry, catering exclusively to Black travelers. Founded with a vision to celebrate, empower, and uplift Black culture and heritage through immersive travel experiences, the organization has quickly become a symbol of representation, community, and exploration.

At the heart of Black & Abroad’s mission lies a commitment to offering unique and enriching travel opportunities that go beyond conventional tourist destinations. Instead, the group curates transformative journeys that immerse participants in the vibrant tapestry of local cultures, traditions, and histories. By doing so, Black & Abroad seeks to break stereotypes and challenge the underrepresentation of Black travelers in the broader travel narrative.

Through a carefully crafted selection of destinations and itineraries, Black & Abroad ensures that each trip fosters cultural exchange and creates meaningful connections between its travelers and the communities they visit. This emphasis on genuine interaction allows participants to gain a deeper understanding of the destinations and forge lasting friendships with locals, transcending geographical boundaries.

Black & Abroad recognizes the power of travel as a transformative force, not only for the individual but also for the collective. The experiences provided by the group are designed to empower Black travelers to see the world without limitations, to explore with a sense of pride in their heritage, and to find strength in their shared experiences.

One of the pillars of Black & Abroad’s success is its emphasis on community building. The organization’s travel experiences offer a supportive and inclusive environment for like-minded individuals to connect, share stories, and bond over their love for exploration. Traveling with a community that understands and celebrates one’s cultural background can be a powerful and enriching experience, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among its members.

Moreover, Black & Abroad’s commitment to representation extends beyond its travel experiences. The organization has become a platform for amplifying Black voices in the travel industry, advocating for increased diversity, and challenging stereotypes in marketing and media portrayals. By showcasing the diverse experiences of Black travelers, Black & Abroad aims to create lasting change in the perception of travel and encourage more inclusive narratives.

Jerri

I am thinking about joining one of the black traveling senior groups.

Sweet Pea

I too would love to join one of these groups. However, none of them state that they are exclusively for seniors.

Michele

All of these groups are ones that I would like to check out as an African American senior who wants to travel more in retirement. I recently received my passport. I have traveled with groups that were for anyone, but I would also like to travel with folks who look like me and share the same perspectives as a black woman. All of the reasons stated above appeal to me. The cultural aspect of travel is important and to have it explained with sensitivity (the complicated past), respect and reverence not always given in other group travel. Ice breaking is already established with like minded individuals. There is a comfortableness. No explanation necessary. I heard of some groups. There is a growing community (YouTube) of black folks living and working abroad.

Hello, I would like to know how do I join the groups?

Thank you, Jerri

Moscow nightlife beautiful girls

Moscow: nightlife and clubs

Moscow nightlife: despite the freezing weather, the Russian capital gets hot as the sun goes down. Between discos, luxury, exaggerated parties and beautiful Russian girls, the Moscow nightlife offers everything you need for memorable nights.

Moscow nightlife

The city of Moscow is definitely one of the most interesting European cities: the stories about underground lines and secret bunkers, the architecture of its buildings, from the Kremlin to St. Basil's Cathedral, up to the Soviet style of the Seven Sisters and modern skyscrapers, make the Russian capital is a unique and fascinating city.

Moscow nightlife by night

One of the many things that Moscow is famous for is its wild nightlife . Moscow never sleeps. If there is anything true about Russians, it is that they love to party! Despite its freezing weather, Moscow turns out to be a hot city with endless fun, hip nightclubs, extreme luxury, beautiful Russian girls and lots of booze when night falls!

Moscow Russian girls nightlife

In fact, in recent years, the Russian capital has definitively abandoned the gray period of communism and its inhabitants have given vent to their desire for fun. As you might expect in a city of over 12 million people, Moscow has an amazing array of nightlife options and a huge choice for all tastes, whether you are a jazz fan, hardcore clubbers or just plain old alcoholics. The nightlife in Moscow winds through a multitude of alternative and transgressive nightclubs where the watchword is to meet new people and spend a night of unbridled and uninhibited fun . In addition to the numerous discos, in the Russian capital there are also 20 casinos open until dawn. For those who want a break of intriguing relaxation, in the city of Moscow there are also numerous massage salons .

Moscow nightlife

Most of Moscow's nightclubs contain a restaurant, a bar area and a nightclub (the larger ones also have bowling alleys, billiards and a casino!). Perhaps because Moscow is such a large metropolis with very cold temperatures and taxis are so expensive that the owners of the bars and clubs want to offer their customers an all in one place for night entertainment.

So, in other words, Moscow is not the best city in the world for bar-crawling, especially bearing in mind that these multipurpose venues often charge entrance, but rather it is better to carefully choose the club where to spend the night.

For a quieter and more sober evening, head for an evening stroll along the Via Arbat or the Red Square to be fascinated by the lights of the city and the grandeur of the buildings, and admire the shops and street artists. An alternative to experience Moscow's nightlife is to spend an evening of lyric, ballet or opera. The Russian capital is home to around sixty theaters, the most famous of which is the world-renowned Bolshoi Theater (Theater Square, 1, Moscow).

Moscow nightlife Bolshoi Theater

Moscow nightlife districts

Moscow's nightlife is not concentrated in a single district but is scattered throughout the city. However, there are areas with a greater concentration of bars and nightclubs .

The Krasnij Oktjabr (Russian for "Red October") complex, a red brick building located on the island in the center of the Moscow River that once housed a chocolate factory, is dotted with numerous trendy nightclubs and offers spectacular views of the river and the symbolic places of the Russian capital. This is where the most glamorous parties in Moscow take place, there are numerous bars, restaurants and art galleries.

Nightlife Moscow Red October Krasnij Oktjabr

Other neighborhoods with good nightlife are the old manufactory area near the Russian government building which houses some bars, the area around the Trubnaya metro and around Kuznetsky Most , while the Kurskaya groups the clubs with electronic music. We can also mention the area of the Patriarch's ponds, an area that is teeming with quiet bars.

Clubs and discos in Moscow

fb_icon_tiny

The crowd is very mixed. Students, young professionals, techno lovers, tourists all gather at Propaganda. Everyone comes to enjoy the music and have fun. It is one of the few clubs where the dancefloor dominates and there are hardly any tables, apart from a few that overlook the entire space. Propaganda is a restaurant until midnight. You can come earlier for dinner and stay for dancing. After midnight, the staff clears the tables from the dance floor and the whole place turns into a club. The place is different from the usual Moscow restaurant / club hybrids, however, because the atmosphere changes completely from "relaxed restaurant" to "underground electro club". Not to be missed.

Moscow Nightlife Propaganda

There are more areas with different music. In the first area, expect a mix of traditional music and Russian pop songs. In the second, slightly larger area, there is live Russian pop music until 2am. After that it is mostly some kind of electronic music. The club is frequented by beautiful Russian girls around 18-25 years old, stunning students or models, and of course there is a good deal of young Russians, middle-aged men and foreign tourists trying their luck! Unlike many other nightclubs, the Icon is a pure nightclub and not a club turned into a restaurant. In any case, if you like to party in a big club and want to savor the typical Moscow nightlife , this is the perfect solution.

Moscow Icon Club nightlife

The crowd is the same as in other high-end Moscow clubs. Men are rarely under the age of 35 and are committed to giving the impression that money is not an issue. The women are amazing even by Moscow nightlife - if you want to meet Moscow's super models, this is the place! Ideal if you want to toast with the Moscow elite.

Moscow Siberia nightlife

The club is located on two floors. The lower floor is mainly frequented by people hanging out at the bar and is good for conversation. The narrow stairs that perfectly fit the student atmosphere of the club take you to the main floor where the real party takes place, complete with a bedlam and girls dancing on the bar counter. In the summer months there is also an outdoor terrace. The place is always crowded and bouncers unnecessarily queue people - having a table or someone inside can be the key to skipping the queue. Otherwise, you might end up waiting half an hour or more. Come early or come back late if you want to avoid the crowds.

Moscow nightlife Rolling Stone Bar

The crowd that frequents this club is quite mixed. People are less trendy and more underground. The place is suitable for afterhours, so most people arrive from 3am onwards.

Moscow Gazgolder nightlife

Immediately upon entering, you will have the feeling that you have come to the local high school graduation prom instead of a real Moscow nightclub. There is no real interior design, but basically just a large hall with a stage and a bar. The crowd is almost entirely made up of teenagers and young people. Not many of the teens speak English, but it probably doesn't matter after all the alcohol. The music ranges from Russian pop and hip-hop to the most famous international hits. Perfect if you want to party and drink alcohol in one of the cheapest clubs in Moscow .

Moscow Tipsy nightlife

Here too, it's full of beautiful girls and it's also a great place to hit them off, as those who come here are notoriously more approachable. The advice is to be very firm with the girls who approach and to make your intentions clear. If you want to be 100% sure to get in, come at 2am when the club is still uncrowded.

Moscow nightlife Miks Afterparty

Oblaka plays a mix of Russian and international pop music. Occasionally, as in many other clubs, there are performances by Russian pop singers. As is often the case in these types of clubs, the music and DJ are not the best but the guests don't seem to care.

Moscow Oblaka nightlife

Moscow's bars and pubs

The bar looks similar but still distinctly different than regular Moscow posh clubs. Most of the people who frequent this place are over 25, and you can find everything from young professionals to creative types to self-proclaimed models. Great if you want to see the "real Muscovites" celebrate without the overblown flashes of wealth. The proposed music is a strange mix of old and new commercial songs and Russian pop.

Moscow nightlife Bar Klava

Downstairs is a large open space that opens its doors wide in the summer. The interior is rustic, yet elegant, with wooden furnishings and plenty of seating. The interior combined with Ugolek's popularity creates a crowded yet intimate atmosphere, especially on weekends. People come to chat, drink and eat. The upstairs bar has a more welcoming atmosphere. It is smaller, with soft lighting and armchairs to be able to relax. On weekends there is a DJ who mixes electronic music and transforms the bar into a relaxed place, ideal for the pre-party.
