Since the official language is English and locals readily accept the US dollar, there are no barriers to finding that perfect shore excursion. The official currency is the Belize dollar.

Where Is The Belize Cruise Port?

As the largest city in Belize, Belize City is a popular port on a Western Caribbean cruise. It borders Guatemala to the south and Mexico to the north, in northern Central America.

Belize City’s port waters are shallow, so cruise ships anchor in the bay of Belize. Then, cruise passengers use a tender boat to reach the Fort Street Tourism Village in Belize City cruise port.

Here, visitors can sample traditional food, shop for duty-free gifts, and find inexpensive shore excursions in the small gated area. They can also find water taxis to access other areas quickly.

What To Pack For Belize City

Regardless of when your cruise arrives in Belize City, expect average daily temperatures of 28 C to 32 C (82 F to 90 F). Dress appropriately for the weather, and bring the following on your Belize port day.

Use a heavy mosquito repellant if you’re heading to the jungle or lowland urban areas. Mosquitoes in Belize can carry Malaria, so it’s best to stay protected.

Needless to say, with all that heat, protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen, hat, and wear sunglasses.

If you’re participating in a water-based excursion, wear a Rashguard shirt , which has a protective fabric of UPF 50+. If you have sensitive skin and are prone to burn, the shirts help prevent sunburns on land-based tours.

Carry bottled water. I like my collapsible water container because I can refill it on the cruise ship and carry it on port days.

Take US dollars as most vendors will accept them, although they give change in Belize dollars.

Do not carry a large amount of cash or wear expensive jewelry or watches. Belize City has a high crime rate, with lots of pickpockets.

Swim With Sharks And Stingrays

The warm waters around Belize are shark-infested but not by the kind featured in the movie “Jaws.” Nurse sharks are small, reaching an average size of eight feet.

They are slow, bottom-feeders who fear humans more than we are of them. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, and the Coral Gardens are three areas tours go to see sharks. Not only can you  snorkel with sharks, but stingrays too.

Tour guides bring food to attract stingrays and nurse sharks. These aquatic creatures have become accustomed to being fed that the stingrays come when they hear a boat motor. The stingrays, while wild, are much more friendly than the sharks.

Don’t be surprised if they swim against your legs, causing some snorkelers to squeal with delight (or anguish). While you can dive and touch the stingray’s backs, stay clear of their tails. I was pretty surprised that they feel like velvet.

Enjoy The Rainforest On A Zip Line

Belize may be known for its lush rainforest. So, imagine experiencing it by flying over it on a zip line. Ziplining provides hours of entertainment, suitable for the whole family.

After being equipped with a harness and given a safety briefing, you’ll enjoy the fauna and flora of the Belizean rainforest on an aerial adventure.

Watch for tropical birds and howler monkeys as you glide from platform to platform. Combine your ziplining tour with a stop at a Mayan ruin or a cave tubing experience for the ultimate adventure.

Interact With Howler Monkeys

The black howler monkey (or baboon in Belize) is the noisiest animal in the jungle. These tree-dwelling primates defend their territory by howling, and locals can hear their calls up to 5 km away.

The laid-back vibe, calm waters, and sandy beach make it the perfect shore excursion for families. While these catamaran tours generally don’t include food, they often provide soda, rum punch, and fresh fruit.

During your excursion, watch the waters because you may spot sea turtles and dolphins in their natural habitat.

Go Cave Tubing

Discover Belize’s natural wonder, its incredible cave system, on a caving excursion. On this tour, cruise passengers take a 30-minute bus ride and a short hike through the rainforest.

Once you reach the Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Park, you’ll relax on an inner tube and float through the caves. You’ll admire the limestone stalactite formations and cavernous spaces with headlamps.

The total float time in the caves is approximately 75 minutes.

Scuba Dive At The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

Belize City is a prime location for scuba diving, with easy access to the stunning Belize Barrier Reef and other nearby dive sites. While the Great Blue Hole might provide a bucket list dive site, it isn’t practical on a cruise port day.

Just a short boat ride away are the beautiful Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker islands. Closer to the city, there are plenty of canyons, walls, and reefs to explore.

With numerous dive operators in the area, you can choose the one that best suits your needs. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, is a must-see for any diving enthusiast.

The best time to dive is from December to April when water temperatures range from 80 to 86 Fahrenheit. During the rainy season (June to November), precipitation stirs up the water clouding visibility.

Final Thoughts

On a port day in Belize City, cruise passengers can do as little or as much as they want. Due to its high crime rate, it’s best to book a shore excursion and not wander outside the Fort Street Tourism Village alone.

If you choose to hire a taxi, be sure to negotiate the rate before stepping inside. Belize taxis have no meters, so you don’t want a surprise when you arrive at your destination.

This Tour starts with an early morning meet at the Cruise Port (Terminal 1) where you will take an air-conditioned van to the jungle boat. Snorkel the azure waters adjacent to the of Belize's Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living barrier reef. This is a shallow water entry, well suited for beginners and intermediate snorkelers. Depart from the Harvest Caye Marina on one of our comfortable snorkel vessels for the short scenic ride to a beautiful site along the reef. This location is teeming with multitudes of colorful reef fish, co-habiting among the beautiful hard and soft coral formations, intermingled with sponges, sea fans, and delicate sea anemones.

Possible sightings of spotted eagle rays and schools of larger fish are quite common, large starfish, queen conchs, and sea cucumbers also call this patch of the reef home. Board your air-conditioned bus for an approximate 45 minute ride to an authentic Mayan village, located at the entrance to the famous Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve. This quaint Mayan village is home to a very gifted Mayan Shaman, Aurora Garcia Saqui. Artist, herbalist and traditional healer, she is a direct descendant of the world renowned Mayan Healer, Don Elijio Panti. Don Elijio bequeathed to Aurora much of his knowledge while she served as his apprentice for many years.

Begin your traditional medicine journey, with a guided walk along a canopied jungle path used by the Maya to gather their medicinal plants and herbs. Along this tropical rainforest path, you will encounter many of the same plants Aurora uses in the traditional herbal remedies that she utilizes in her healing clinic. As you slowly walk along the trail, your knowledgeable Mayan guide will point out and explain many of these unique medicinal plants and trees.

You will have a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the making of a Mayan herbal remedy by Aurora, she will explain the herb and its medicinal properties as she prepares and grinds it with a hand mill. Mango Creek & Independence Village Life

Board your awaiting air-conditioned bus at Malacate Landing after a short tender ride from Harvest Caye. Within a couple of minutes of departing from Malacate Landing, you are entering the twin villages of Mango Creek and Independence. Your entertaining bus guide will point out the sights of Mango Creek and Independence and give you a detailed history of how the villages got their start. You will pass churches and schools, then a ride down to "Water Side", the local water taxi landing on Mango Creek. Then it's back through the village of Mango Creek and the other side of the street......Independence. All the while your guide will be showing you points of interest and describing Belizean village life, then and now.

Your bus will now head to the commercial port of Big Creek, only two miles away, Big Creek Port is the only natural deep-water port in all of Belize. Here is where all the bananas are loaded onto ships and transported to Europe, crude oil is stored and shipped from this port as well and also bulk sugar has just begun to be exported from the Big Creek port.

After a short drive, you will arrive at your next stop which is a local Village Pioneer Home. Here you will have a chance to see how one of the first settlers of Mango Creek lived and raised a family, as you take a step back in time. Cool refreshments await. You can visit the “South of the Border” snack bar to quench your thirst and get a tasty snack (not included) as well as pick up a souvenir or 2 from the Gift Shop. Before you know it, it's time to reboard your bus and head back to the pier at Malacate and the tender back to Harvest Caye. It's been a fun and educational tour of rural Belizean village life.

This location is teeming with multitudes of colorful reef fish, co-habiting among the beautiful hard and soft coral formations, intermingled with sponges, sea fans and delicate sea anemones. Possible sightings of stingrays and schools of larger fish are quite common, large starfish, queen conchs and sea cucumbers also call this patch of the reef home.

Catch & Release Fishing

Go deep-sea fishing in the beautiful, crystal-clear waters off Harvest Caye, which are teeming with highly prized, fun-to-catch fish such as groupers, snappers and jacks.

After departing from the pier in a skiff designed for fishing, you will cruise into the turquoise waters off Harvest Caye, which are teeming with fish. Just settle in and enjoy, as the 32-foot boat races to a spot where the fish have been biting lately.

Once the boat anchors, a crew member will outfit you with all the necessary tackle and bait that the fish should find irresistible. The crew will also offer tips on how best to cast and retrieve the lure or live bait to maximize the experience.

Jacks thrive here among the reefs and if you catch one be prepared for a fierce fight. They typically weigh up to five pounds, but can be much larger. Easy to identify by their steep heads and deeply forked tails, jacks are often caught here.

If you catch a striped fish that grunts like a pig when you pull it out of the water, it will be a grunt. They make that characteristic sound by grinding the teeth deep in their throats. Grunts tend to school in the many reefs and sea beds off Harvest Caye.

Many types of groupers are found in deeper waters near rocks, drop-offs and ledges. Although groupers are slow swimmers, they can be powerful, especially the massive ones.
