How to force an app to close on your Mac

If an app stops responding and you can't close the app normally, follow these steps to force the app to close.

To close a Mac app normally, choose Quit from the app’s menu in the menu bar, or press Command-Q. If the app won’t close, follow these steps to force the app to close.

Force an app to close

Press these three keys together: Option (or Alt), Command, Esc (Escape). 1 Or choose Force Quit from the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen.

A Force Quit window will open. Select the app you want to close, then click Force Quit:

The Finder is always open, but if it stops responding, you can force it to close and then open again: select Finder in the Force Quit window, then click Relaunch.

If you can't force the app to close

If you can’t force the app to quit, try restarting your Mac: Choose Apple menu  > Restart.

If your Mac won’t restart, force your Mac to turn off:

Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds until your Mac turns off. 2

Turn your Mac back on.

How to Force Quit a Frozen Mac App

Macs aren't infallible, and at some point during your time using them you'll come across a situation in macOS where an app has become unresponsive, leaving you without access to its contents and functions, and only a continually revolving beachball for your troubles.

How to Force Quit An App - Method 1

If the app is acting up, hold down the Option key and right-click its icon in the Dock to reveal a Force Quit action in the popup menu.

How to Force Quit an App - Method 2

There's a second option for quitting an unresponsive app, and it may be one of the more intuitive solutions.

• Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar.

• Click the app that you want to quit. Unresponsive apps will have a "Not Responding" designation next to them.

Alternatively, you can open the Force Quit applications interface by pressing Command + Option + Escape all at once.

How to Force Quit An App - Method 3

You can also force quit misbehaving Mac apps using Activity Monitor. You can find it in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

Note that if the app or process has files open, force quitting it may cause you to lose data. Also, bear in mind that if the process you force quit is used by other apps or processes, those apps or processes may experience issues.

If your work in the crashed app hasn't been saved recently either manually or automatically, then there's not much you can do to retrieve your work other than check Time Machine.

Safari can freeze and remain unresponsive if an extension or another application interferes with it. When it freezes, it won't close the normal way; all controls are disabled and the browser fails to respond. The solution is to force a shut down of Safari to escape the frozen state.

Press the "Command-Option-Esc" keys to launch the "Force Quit Applications" window.

Alternatively, click the Apple logo in the menu bar and select "Force Quit" to launch the "Force Quit Applications" window.

Click "Safari" and then click the "Force Quit" button.

Click the "Force Quit" button again to shut down Safari when "Do you want to force Safari to quit?" appears on the screen.

Windows Users

Right-click the taskbar and click "Start Task Manager" to launch the Task Manager.

Click the "Processes" tab to display a list of the running processes. Click "Show processes from all users" and then enter your administrator password to display the processes for all the accounts on your computer.

Scroll down and click "Safari.exe." Click "End Process" to shut down Safari completely.

How to shut down a Mac

Macs are quite happy to stay on all the time, in fact, some ask whether they should shut down their Mac every night or not , but there are occasions when you might need to power it off to clear memory, address errors, rescue a machine that’s locked up, or simply put it away for a couple of weeks while you’re on holiday. There are several ways to power down a Mac, depending on the situation. Here’s our quick guide on how to shut down a MacBook or Mac. 

How to shut down a Mac via the menu

The most common way to power down a Mac is via the menu in macOS. This allows the system to properly close open apps and deal with any processes that are ongoing, so that the shutdown is as clean as possible. To do this, follow these simple steps. 

• Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner. 
• Select Shut Down . 
• At this point, you will get one minute to stop the shutdown process, or you can click on Shut Down again to shut down immediately.
• If you don’t want the open apps to reopen when you reboot the machine, deselect the ‘ Reopen windows when logging back in ’ option. 
• Confirm your choice by clicking Shut Down again.
• Your Mac will now start the shutdown process, but you will get the opportunity to save any unsaved documents you might have open, and you will be asked to confirm if certain apps should be closed.

Tip: Apple recommends not closing the display on a MacBook until the screen has gone completely black, as this could cause things to not shut down properly and may increase the time it takes to reboot the machine.  

How to shut down a Mac with the power button

If your Mac has become unresponsive, and you can’t access the shutdown menu to close it down, you can turn to the power button to shut down your Mac. Here’s what you need to do:

• Press and hold the power button until the screen goes blank. 
• There’s usually an audible sound to listen out for, either a click or the sound of the fans stopping, that tells you it has switched off.
• Wait a minute or so before starting the Mac up again.

It’s not as clean a method as the software approach, and there’s a possibility you may lose any unsaved data or documents that were open at the time, but, most of the time, everything should be there when you restart the device.

How to shut down an unresponsive app

If your Mac has one app that’s gotten itself stuck and is causing problems, you may not need to fully shut down your Mac. The Force Quit command may allow you to reset the troublesome app. Here’s what to do. 

• Right-click on the app icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen.
• Select the Quit option. 

If that doesn’t work there are a few other ways to Force Quit:

• Press and hold the Option (or Alt) key while right clicking the app in the Dock and you should see the option to Force Quit.
• Click on the Apple Menu and select Force Quit.
• Press: Command + Option (or Alt) + Escape to open the Force Quit dialog box.
• Open the Activity Monitor app and select Force Quit.

Hopefully this will clear any system blockages that are causing slow-downs or other issues. If it doesn’t, then you may want to use the method above to restart your Mac.

How to schedule a Mac to turn itself on and off

It’s not always problems that cause people to want to shut down their Macs. It could just be that you prefer your device to power down at night or other specific times. This used to be part of macOS and was found in the Energy Saver section of System Preferences. Sadly, Apple decided to remove the feature with macOS Ventura, and it can now only be accessed through the Terminal app. 

Admittedly this isn’t something that the vast majority of Mac users will want to mess about with, as it requires a small amount of coding to be done. If you’re determined though, you can read our how to schedule your Mac to turn off and on tutorial, which takes you through all the required steps.

Are you having trouble turning off your frozen Mac desktop or MacBook? If your Mac is unresponsive, you're seeing the spinning beachball cursor, and/or you can't use the keyboard and mouse, there are a few easy ways to force shut down your Mac. This wikiHow article will show you how to force your Mac to shut down, even if it won't respond to your input. Plus, we’ve included some troubleshooting tips in case your Mac still isn’t working when you restart it.

Doing a Force Shutdown on Mac

To force shut down your Mac, press and hold the Power button or key until the screen goes dark. Alternatively, try pressing "Ctrl + Opt + Cmd + Power" or "Ctrl + Cmd + Power."

• If you haven't already tried to shut down your Mac normally, you should do that first. Click the Apple menu and select Shut Down to do so.
• If a program is hung, you can force quit it .
• If you have any external devices connected to your Mac, such as a flash drive or external SSD, eject them first .

• ' MacBook without Touch Bar: The Power key is in the top-right corner of the keyboard.
• MacBook with Touch Bar: The Power button is the Touch ID section on the far-right side of the Touch Bar. It's actually a button that you can press, even though it doesn't look like it.
• iMac: You'll find the Power button behind the lower-left side of the iMac's screen.
• Mac Pro: It's on the top of the computer.

• If you see a prompt asking you to confirm that you want to turn off your Mac, you didn't hold down the key for long enough.

• A completely powered-off Mac will have a black screen. On some Mac computers and MacBooks, you won't be able to see the power light nor will you be able to hear any noise from the drives or the fan. [1] X Research source

• If pressing this combination of keys doesn't shut down your Mac, proceed to the next step.

• Many applications will not work in Safe Mode. Use it for the next couple of steps, then restart it to return your computer to normal.

• Click Users & Groups .
• Select your user account in the left pane.
• Click the Login Items tab.
• Select the program causing the issue.
• Click the - button below the list of programs.

• Click the Applications folder (or click the Go menu and click Applications in the resulting drop-down menu).
• Find the program that keeps freezing.
• Drag the program into the Trash.

• Restart your computer and hold down ⌘ Command + R as it starts up.
• Click Disk Utility on the startup screen.
• Click Continue .
• Select your startup disk and click Repair Disk .
• Wait for this to complete (it may take a while), then restart your computer.

• Laptop with non-removable battery — Shut down your computer and plug it into a power source. Using the left side of the built-in keyboard, hold down ⇧ Shift + Control + ⌥ Option while pressing the "Power" button, then release all keys, and finally press the "Power" button again.
• Laptop with removable battery — Shut down your computer. Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery, then hold down the "Power" button for five seconds. Release the "Power" button, reinsert the battery, and plug in your computer to a power source. Press the "Power" button.
• Desktop — Shut down the iMac and unplug the power cord. Wait fifteen seconds, then plug it back in. Wait five seconds, then press the "Power" button.

4 Ways to Shut Down, Restart, Logout, Sleep and Lock Your Mac

Many people use the Mac for months without restarting or shutting down. However, it always a good habit to properly logout or shut down your Mac. This not only helps to save power but also keep your Mac in healthy condition. Good part is that you can shut down, restart, logout and put your Mac to sleep mode using multiple methods. In this article, we will cover some of the popular ways to do all these stuffs so that you can pick the one that works for your style.

Shut Down, Restart, Log Out and Sleep in Mac

There are two options to consider before shutting down and trigger other actions in Mac. One is to forcefully close all the apps and shut down without any prompt. Make sure you save all your work before force shutdown or restart the Mac. Second is to show a confirmation prompt when you trigger closing down of your Mac. This is useful to remind you if you have wrongly triggered the action and allows you to save your work.

1. From Apple Menu

If you are a menu follower, then this option is for you. Simply click on the Apple logo showing on top left corner of your Mac. You will see a list of menu items including Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, Lock Screen and Log Out options. Click on the menu to trigger an action as per your need. Sleep and Lock Screen options are harmless and trigger the actions immediately without any prompt. All your open windows will be available when you wake or unlock the screen. However, other options like Shut Down, Restart and Logout will close all your open applications. To avoid losing unsaved work, Mac will show you a prompt allowing 60 seconds delay before trigger the action.

You can cancel the action if you have wrongly triggered or want to save any open documents. Otherwise, leave the prompt to shut down / restart / log out after 60 seconds or click on shut down / restart / log out button to trigger the action immediately without waiting.

2. Using Power Button and Keyboard Combinations

Next option is to use the power button which you can use to toggle the sleep mode in Mac. Alternatively, press and hold the power button to view the shut down prompt like below. You can click one of the buttons in the prompt or cancel the action.

As per Apple support guide, there are also many keyboard shortcuts with power button combination to trigger shut down, restart or log out action. You can test the shortcuts that work for you and use when needed.

3. Creating Custom Shortcut

If you are not convenient in using one of the keyboard shortcuts, you can create custom keyboard shortcut for shut down, restart or log out.

• Click Apple menu and choose “System Preferences…” option.
• Click on “Keyboard” and go to “Shortcuts” tab.
• Select “App Shortcuts” and then click on the + button to add new shortcut.

• On the pop-up that appears, enter the menu title as exactly it appears in the Apple menu. For example, we enter “Shut Down…” and then choose the shortcuts as “Option + 4”.

• Click add button to create a new shortcut for shut down.
• Now, check the Apple menu and you will see the new shortcut is assigned to the “Shut Down…” menu.

There are two things to note when using this method. One is that the menu has two “Shut Down” items as you can see. Other is that it will trigger the shut down without any prompt. You can create custom shortcuts for restart, lock screen ad log out menu items also.

4. Using Terminal

If you love to use command line interface, it is super easy to trigger shut down, restart and log out actions. There are multiple commands available for this purpose. You need to use sudo for running some of these commands as a superuser. Otherwise, you will see an error in the Terminal showing as “NOT Super-user”.

• Shut down immediately without prompt.

sudo shutdown -h now

• Schedule shut down after 10 minutes. You can replace 10 with any number of minutes to trigger automatic shutting down of your Mac.
• Shut down instantly.
• Shut down without prompt.
• Shut down showing the default prompt with 60 seconds delay.
• Restart without prompt.
• Restart Mac with default prompt.
• Log out without confirmation.
• Log out with confirmation.
• Put Mac to sleep instantly.
• Put the display to sleep.

You've heard of a Mac that won't boot, but what about a Mac that won't shut down? Here's what you need to know about a Mac that just won't go to sleep.

How to shut down your mac, software can cause shut down issues, unplug any peripherals, when all else fails: force restart your mac, preventing shut down problems in future, still got problems try the nuclear option.

Macs are like any other computer. Sometimes they won't start up , and sometimes they won't shut down. If your Mac is refusing to shut off, here's how to shut it down anyway---and, hopefully, permanently fix the problem.

Shutting down your Mac is as simple as clicking on the Apple logo on the menu bar at the top of your screen, then choosing "Shut Down..." followed by "Shut Down" in the box that appears. If you're feeling particularly impatient, you can hold the Option button on your keyboard while clicking the menu option to prevent that confirmation box appearing at all.

Once you've started the shutdown process, you need to wait. Even if you leave the box checked to "Reopen windows when logging back in" you'll still have to wait for your currently-open applications and windows to close before your Mac shuts down.

Assuming your Mac won't shut down, it's time to try a few more things.

Sometimes software can prevent your Mac from shutting down properly. Occasionally your Mac will notify you that "Application blocked shut down" and sometimes you won't see any errors at all. First, try closing all of your applications by right-clicking (or two-finger clicking) on their icons in the dock, and choosing "Quit."

You can force quit any apps that aren't responding or won't close. Right-click (or two-finger click) the app's icon, hold the Options key on your keyboard, then click "Force Quit" and the app should close. You can then try shutting down again.

If this doesn't work, it's possible that a background process has crashed and is causing the issue. Open up Activity Monitor (hit Command + Spacebar then search for it) and click on the CPU tab. You can order the "% CPU" column by descending order to see if any apps are using a high amount of CPU power. If they are, click on them to highlight them, then click on the "X" at the top left to kill the process.

Other apps that may have crashed will be highlighted in red, followed by a label that says "(Not responding)." You'll need to click on these then click on the "X" to kill them too. Assuming you've gotten rid of any errant processes, it's time to try shutting down again.

Peripherals may also cause issues when trying to shut down your Mac. For best results disconnect any attached peripherals and try again. If you're using an iMac, you can try unplugging everything except your mouse or Magic Trackpad (though keyboards shouldn't cause an issue).

Safely remove any external drives by right-clicking on them and choosing "Eject [DISK]" or by clicking and dragging the volume to the Trash can. If you can't get a drive to eject, then you may have found your issue. You may see a new window pop up with a choice to "Force Eject..." which you can try.

Otherwise, you can force eject via the Terminal with the following command (replace "DISK" with whatever your drive is called):

If your Mac still won't shut down, the only thing left to do is to figuratively "pull the plug" and force a shutdown. This works on both desktop Macs and MacBooks. To do this, first press and hold the Control and Command keys, then hold the Mac's power button.

You may want to ditch the app in favor of an alternative if such an option exists. Try restarting your Mac without first running the problem software.

macOS also needs to be regularly updated to keep on top of issues. You can check for software updates under System Preferences > Software Update. While you're there, you can enable automatic updates by clicking on "Advanced..." then checking the relevant boxes.

Boot into Safe Mode

Restarting your Mac in safe mode may also help stop the problem from happening again in the future. When you start your Mac in safe mode, the startup disk is scanned for issues and macOS will try to fix any problems that are detected. Safe mode also deletes font, kernel, and system caches, along with a few other things.

To boot your Mac into safe mode:

• Turn your Mac off (you may need to force shut down).
• Press the power button then immediately press and hold the Shift key (either one).
• Release the Shift key when you see the login window and log in as usual.

Reset Your SMC and PRAM/NVRAM

The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for low-level functions on your Mac, including power management, battery charging, and keyboard backlighting. Sometimes power issues can be caused by the SMC, so it makes sense to try resetting the SMC if you're having chronic shut down problems.

The process is straightforward but differs depending on whether you have a MacBook with an internal battery, a MacBook with a removable battery, or a desktop computer like an iMac. Find out how to reset the SMC on your particular Mac .

Nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) or Parameter RAM (PRAM) is used by your Mac to store settings like startup disk preference, display resolution, and time zone information. It's unlikely that NVRAM/PRAM will affect how your Mac shuts down, but if you're still having issues at this stage, it's probably worth a shot.

The process for resetting this memory is the same across the board:

• Make sure your Mac is powered off.
• Press and release the power button (or Touch ID button on some MacBooks) then immediately press and hold Option + Command + P + R on your keyboard.
• After around 20 seconds you can release these keys, and your Mac should start up as usual.

After resetting NVRAM/PRAM, you may need to adjust settings like display resolution, startup disk, and time zone. Now try to restart or shut down your Mac normally to see if you still have issues.

When all else fails, you can always format your drive and reinstall macOS. You should first back up your Mac with Time Machine  to save your files. Avoid using any third-party disk cloning software for backing up (we're after a clean install after all).

You can then follow the instructions to delete macOS and reinstall the operating system from scratch . Remember that you'll need to restore your Time Machine backup and reinstall any software you want once you've done so. This isn't a quick process, so set aside an hour or two before you start.

A fresh install should clear up the issue for good. It can also solve other problems caused by leftover kernel extensions and partially uninstalled software. You may notice your Mac is faster and you'll have plenty of free space too.

Safari Keeps Unexpectedly Shutting Down on My Mac OS

Safari 7 integrates with OS X Mavericks to provide a streamlined and efficient user experience. With this integration comes the ability to add several different extensions and add-ons that can compromise the stability of the browser. Removing recently installed add-ons, disabling extensions and updating the software can often resolve the issue. Update Safari

The preferences file contains a list of all of your settings for Safari. Safari looks for the file when it launches and if it doesn't find the file it creates a new version.

Click the "Go" menu, hold down the "Option" key and select the "Library" option from the drop-down menu. Access the "Preferences" folder and delete the file named "com.apple.Safari.plist." Launch Safari and check to see if deleting the preferences file corrected the issue.

Reset Safari

After trying other troubleshooting options, you can try resetting Safari to its factory defaults to see if it solves your problem. Resetting Safari doesn't remove any add-ons, extensions or bookmarks you added to your browser. However, it does remove all of the notifications, resets many of the preferences and can sometimes resolve an issue with unexpected crashes. When you reset Safari, the history, cookies and other website data also get cleared. Keeping your history for several days, weeks, months or a year can cause the browser to stop functioning efficiently and cause unexpected crashes. Click the "Safari" menu, select "Reset Safari..." and check every available box. Select the "Reset" button to reset your browser.

ByteDance would rather shut down US TikTok than sell it

According to the bill signed into law by President Biden on April 24, 2024 , TikTok owner ByteDance must either sell the platform to a US firm, or face a ban. The company has nine months to comply, with a possible three-month extension if a deal is in progress.

According to Reuters , four unspecified sources say that ByteDance will not either sell TikTok or divest itself from the platform. The sources say that key to the issue is that selling the platform would require ByteDance to also sell the algorithms that power both TikTok and the company's other businesses.

The sources further said that TikTok as a whole represents only a small part of ByteDance's operations. Shutting the platform down in the US would have limited impact on ByteDance, and would mean that it retains its algorithms.

A separate source told Reuters that US users represented around a quarter of TikTok's global revenues in 2023. Two of the sources speaking to Reuters said that ByteDance revenue for 2023 was almost $120 billion, meaning TikTok earned at most $30 billion in that year.

Where a sale would mean giving another firm its proprietary algorithms, those algorithms also mean that ByteDance may not easily divest itself from the platform. The algorithms are reported registered as intellectual property of the company in China.

The sources also said that separating the firm's algorithms from TikTok would be complex. Neither ByteDance nor the Biden Administration have explained how TikTok would function as a global social media platform if it were broken up.

According to Reuters , former US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is reportedly considering forming an investor group to buy the company.

The US government's stance on TikTok is that as its owner ByteDance is a Chinese company, it could be compelled to provide data about American users of the platform. ByteDance has denied this, and says it intends to challenge the new law in court.

TikTok owner ByteDance reportedly would rather shut down the popular video-sharing app than sell it if the Chinese-based company exhausts all legal options to fight a US ban – despite growing interest from American buyers for the platform.  

The algorithms TikTok relies on for its operations are deemed core to ByteDance’s overall operations, which would make a sale of the app with algorithms highly unlikely, sources close to the parent said.

TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew vowed on Wednesday that the social media company will wage a legal war after President Joe Biden signed a law forcing ByteDance to sell the app in 270 days or face a ban.

On Thursday, ByteDance shot down a report by The Informatio n saying it was exploring scenarios for selling TikTok’s US business without the algorithm.

The company posted on Toutiao, a media platform it owns, that it had no plan to sell TikTok, which accounts for a small share of ByteDance’s total revenues and daily active users.

A shutdown would have limited impact on ByteDance’s business while the company would not have to give up its core algorithm, said the sources, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak to the media. 

ByteDance declined to comment.

A TikTok spokesperson told The Post: “The Information story is inaccurate.’

The Information’s report also noted that even in a selloff of its US business, TikTok wouldn’t give away its precious algorithm.

This secretive algorithm, which tailors each TikTok user’s “For You” page to include videos designed to appeal to their individual interests, has been at the center of political debates on whether the app should be barred in the US.

Some officials have argued that TikTok’s confidential algorithms have allowed third parties in China to spy on American users, threatening national security.

TiTok has already said that it would challenge the the new law in court, calling the US government’s efforts to ban the short-form video-sharing platform “unconstitutional.”

“Rest assured — we aren’t going anywhere,” TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said in a video posted moments after Biden signed the bill, giving ByteDance 270 days to divest TikTok’s US assets.

“The facts and the Constitution are on our side and we expect to prevail.”

Supporters of the new rule have advised ByteDance to ditch its TikTok fans in the US to allow the social media platform to keep running.

“It doesn’t have to be this painful for ByteDance,” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Illinois Democrat and bill co-sponsor, recently posted on X. “They could make it a lot easier on themselves by simply divesting @tiktok_us. It’s their choice.”

Though ByteDance has since squashed hopes of a sale, wealthy American finance and tech tycoons were reportedly gearing up to make multibillion-dollar bids to buy TikTok.

Among the suitors: Steven Mnuchin, the former treasury secretary, as well as Activision Blizzard’s former chief Bobby Kotick, who has been reported to have spoken to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about a possible proposal.

There were also rumors that outspoken Pershing Square hedge fund boss Bill Ackman and “Shark Tank” multi-millionaire Kevin O’Leary would place a bid.

Unfortunately for these deep-pocketed aspiring TikTok owners, ByteDance appears to be staying true to a comment from China’s Commerce Ministry last year, which said that it’s strongly opposed to any sale.

Representatives for TikTok and ByteDance did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Should TikTok actually be barred in the US, app stores like those operated by Apple and Google would be subject to civil penalties if they continued to distribute TikTok.

The TikTok app would also lose its ability to update on US phones, meaning it would lose compatibility with the latest versions of iOS and Android and cease to function.

The app is already on millions of phones in the US, but the bill’s passage would force internet service providers to block access to TikTok,  according to software-centric blog Lifehacker , effectively shutting down access to the platform whether it’s already on a device or not.

This is exactly how the Indian government went about barring the app, citing national security threats, Lifehacker noted.

Nope, not a hacking attack. Very likely a server failure on your government website. Try the process again if you have not done that already. In my experience, when dealing with any Government agency, you will get much more support from a phone call then trying to deal with them over a website. They will have other options for you to answer their questionnaire if it is unable to be done. They try to automate their services using the internet, but don't always have the best computers, servers, or software to be successful in their efforts.
