Deciding the best time to visit Singapore depends upon whether you want to avoid busy periods during festivals or embrace the crowds and join in the fun. If you want to maximize dry weather, the best time to visit Singapore is during the summer months of June, July, and August.

Singapore is a serious melting pot for different religions and ethnic groups, especially Chinese, Malay, and Indian. Plus, the tiny island nation, which is a city-state, has one of the largest percentages of foreign workers in the world. With so many nationalities in one place, there's always something to celebrate. You can unexpectedly find yourself in the midst of a massive festival or street procession you didn't know was coming.

The Weather in Singapore

Singapore is located extremely close to the equator. It's just around 85 miles to the south of the city. You'll never be cold in Singapore unless it's because the air conditioning is perpetually cranked to the maximum inside of the many shopping malls. Museums and movie cinemas are even worse—take a jacket! Temperatures remain consistent throughout the year, with highs of 89 degrees Fahrenheit and lows in the mid-70s.

Many first-time travelers to Singapore are surprised to see so much green space and the abundance of walking trails. They expect a futuristic city where soulless concrete and moving sidewalks have replaced all greenery. But the island stays green for a reason: Singapore gets a lot of thundershowers. Unlike the rest of Southeast Asia where there is little to no rain during peak dry season, unexpected showers pop up often in Singapore. Fortunately, they usually don't last long, and the sun returns to raise humidity. The average humidity in Singapore is above 80 percent.

Rainfall is mostly consistent throughout the year except for additional rain in November, December, and January. Singapore experiences the wettest months during the monsoon season between November and January.

What to Do When It Rains in Singapore

Singapore averages 167 rainy days per year—that's nearly one out of two days a year with a bit of rain.   Along with an interconnected matrix of shopping malls, indoor food courts, and local markets, there are plenty of world-class museums in Singapore to enjoy during passing showers.

Smoke and Haze From Sumatra

Singapore receives predictable haze and smoke annually from slash-and-burn agricultural fires that rage out of control in nearby Sumatra , Indonesia, just to the west.   The pollution created by these fires is only one more example of how unsustainable palm oil plantations have become an ecological disaster. Despite an outcry from the government, the fires typically begin around May and can continue throughout the dry summer months until September.

Changes in wind direction can sometimes carry haze away as quickly as it came, so you shouldn't avoid visiting, unless you suffer from respiratory problems. On days when particulate levels rise too high, the air may irritate eyes and cause choking. Locals often opt to wear protective masks when the haze comes; you can get yours in any pharmacy.

On some years, particulate levels in the air rise above "safe" thresholds, forcing some business closures. Travelers with respiratory problems should check the haze in Singapore website created by the National Environment Agency to see if haze is a severe threat. On some very hazy days in the past, residents have been advised to minimize outdoor time and remain indoors.

Public Holidays in Singapore

Residents in Singapore enjoy 11 national holidays annually to accommodate the four major religious groups (Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, and Christian). Some secular holidays such as New Year's Day (January 1), not associated with specific groups, are also observed.

Some festivals such as Lunar New Year span much longer than a single day, and locals request holiday time before or after to maximize time off. Businesses owned by specific ethnic groups may still be closed in observance, and travel may be affected.

If a public holiday falls on Sunday, businesses will close Monday instead. The Ministry of Manpower sets the dates of public holidays in Singapore each year. Check their calendar if your time in Singapore is short.

Many festivals and holidays in Singapore are based on lunisolar calendars, so dates change from year to year.

Holidays differ between ethnic groups. The regular public holidays for Singapore include:

• New Year's Day (January 1)
• Chinese New Year (two days celebrated in either January or February )
• Good Friday (March or April; dates vary)
• Labour Day (May 1)
• Vesak Day (dates vary; usually in May)
• Hari Raya Puasa (dates vary based on Ramadan)
• National Day (August 9)
• Hari Raya Haji (dates vary)
• Diwali (Deepavali) (dates vary; usually October or November)
• Christmas Day (December 25)
• Polling Day General election and presidential election days are also public holidays

Peak Season in Singapore

As usual, traveling during big public holidays may be fun but expect higher prices for accommodation. Hotels often inflate rates for the increased demand, particularly during the Lunar New Year.

Festivals and Events in Singapore

The worst-case scenario for visiting Singapore is to turn up just a day or two after a major festival. With poor timing, you'll deal with the crowds and higher prices without getting to enjoy the festival itself. The largest festivals affecting transportation and accommodation in Singapore are Christmas (yes, the one on December 25), Lunar New Year in January or February, Ramadan , and National Day. You'll find many smaller events, parades, and celebrations throughout the year to enjoy other Asian festivals .

Spring in Singapore kicks off the country's dry season, making it a mostly pleasant time to visit. Temperatures are usually a high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, low of 78 degrees.

Events to check out:

• Singapore International Film Festival is the country's longest-running independent cultural event. It's held every April.
• In May, Singapore Airlines sponsors the Singapore Airlines International Cup . With a S$3 million prize (around 2.1 million USD), it's one of Asia's richest horse racing events, attracting hordes to the Turf Club.

Summer is Singapore's driest season and one of the most popular among visitors, but you should consider air quality when you visit. Despite plenty of effort to curb the slash-and-burn agricultural practices in neighboring Sumatra, they continue, and the smoke and haze create poor air that quality chokes up locals and travelers every summer.

• Singapore Food Festival is a month-long celebration of food usually in July.
• The Great Singapore Sale is heaven for shoppers. From May through June department stores, malls, and individual boutiques offer incredible discounts and host late-night shopping events.

Early fall sees a break in the tourist traffic that plagues summer. If you come early enough, you also can shop at the very end of the Great Singapore Sale.

• The Singapore Grand Prix is part of the Formula One World Championship. It's held each fall at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Even February, often the driest month in Singapore, still averages about six inches of rain. You'll see plenty of residents carrying umbrellas at all times; they're useful for both hot sun and unexpected rain.

• The Chingay Parade is a yearly street parade that takes place in February. The colorful ceremony celebrates the birthdays of the Chinese deities.
• ZoukOut , one of Asia's largest dance music festivals, takes place each year in December.

The best time to visit Singapore is in June, July, and August, during the country's dry season. Still, expect a rain shower or two if you visit during this time, but you'll avoid monsoon season, which lasts from November through January.

December is the wettest month in Singapore, as it lands smack dab in the middle of monsoon season and receives 287.4 millimeters of rainfall.

Singapore tends to be more expensive than other tourist destinations in Southeast Asia, but it's still much cheaper than visiting any major U.S. city. Lodging is inexpensive, complete with hostels, and food is relatively cheap, as well. Your biggest expense when visiting Singapore is air travel.

This means that thunderstorms can be expected in the afternoons, plus occasional ‘Sumatra squalls’ (thunderstorms originating in Sumatra and traveling eastward across Singapore) can occur in the mornings.   

Along with May , June has the hottest average monthly temperatures, with this being 28.5°C (83°F). Humidity is average for Singapore with a 80.9% average and rainfall is also average, with rain expected nearly half of the days in the month.

Singapore’s average day time maximum temperature in June is 31.9°C (89°F), with an average minimum temperature of 25.7°C (78°F) and a 24-hour average of 28.5°C (83°F).

Note that humidity is generally at its highest in the morning just before sunrise and at its lowest in the mid-afternoon (on days when there is no rain).

The annual Dragon Boat Festival takes place in June. This is when some of the best rowers in the world come to compete.

The main action takes place at Bedok Reservoir, but you can also catch practices and races on the Kallang River or at the Gardens by the Bay Marina Channel.

Be sure to try some of the delicious glutinous rice dumplings “Zhang”, one of the best parts of the festival. These triangular dumplings are wrapped in pandan leaves and come with a variety of fillings.

June is a busy season in Singapore! It’s the school holiday for Singapore, as well as for many other countries. Therefore, it’s the peak season for travel.

There are 2 public holidays this month, namely: Vesak Day on 2 June 2023 and Hari Raya Haji on 29 June 2023.

Singapore’s Weather in June

June is a Southwest Monsoon Season in Singapore. During this time, there will be occasional “Sumatra Squalls” with wind gusts of 40-80 km/h occurring between the predawn hours and midday. Short duration showers/thunderstorms in the afternoon are also common.

Despite the thunderstorms, the afternoon temperature is considerably hot, with maximum temperature around 31.9°C.

Based on historical data between 1991 to 2020, it rains 13 days out of 30 days. So, it will rain 43% of the month.

I recommend that you bookmark  Singapore’s weather website , which is a very useful website to see current rain area & intensity, and to check the rain forecast for the next 4 days.

Most of the rains have pretty short duration. So you don’t have to cancel your plan if the forecast is rain. Just bring foldable umbrella if you’re planning to explore the outdoors.

June’s temperature hovers between 25.7 to 31.9 degrees Celsius (78.3 to 89.4 degrees Fahrenheit). Generally, the temperature in Singapore doesn’t differ much from month to month.

In June, the sun rises between 6.56am (1 Jun) to 7.02am (30 Jun) and sunset occurs between 7.08pm (1 Jun) to 7.14pm (30 Jun).

JOHOR BAHRU: Under a pilot initiative launching in June, Malaysians travelling to Singapore on factory buses will be able to clear immigration through QR codes at both of Johor’s land checkpoints. 

The scheme, spearheaded by Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, follows the successful response to the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA)’s move to roll out a QR code initiative on Mar 19 for those travelling by car on its side of the land border. 

Singapore’s rollout has garnered positive feedback from commuters and this has led to increased calls from Johorean travellers and businesses for the Malaysia government to launch a similar initiative. 

When contacted on Tuesday night (Apr 23), Johor’s Works, Transportation and Infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh told CNA that the pilot will apply to Malaysian citizens who travel to Singapore onboard “bas kilangs” or factory buses. He stressed that travellers with Singapore passports are not yet included in this pilot initiative.  

Mr Fazli said these travellers will be able to use QR code clearance at both Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar, the immigration complexes linked to the Johor-Singapore Causeway and Tuas Second Link respectively. 

“The pilot test initiative involves only Malaysians who pass through on board bas kilangs,” said Mr Fazli. 

“These travellers are still required to bring their passports because at this point the QR code systems for both Malaysia and Singapore function differently and are not yet integrated,” he added.

Factory buses are Malaysian-registered vehicles which transport workers between Johor Bahru and industrial areas in Singapore. Local media estimate that around 500 of such buses pass through the land checkpoints each day. 

Mr Fazli further explained that for this pilot, immigration officers will board the factory buses with handheld scanners at the checkpoints. 

The officers will then scan the QR codes for each individual traveller. He said that the QR codes are generated by an application on their mobile phone. 

Mr Fazli added that the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as the Immigration Department will make further announcements to confirm the details of the implementation of the QR code system. 

He said that the overall plan is to “widen the scope of travellers” who will be able to use the QR code system.

Following Singapore’s roll out of its QR code system in March, travellers have reported positive feedback , with some outlining that the system has shaved up to 30 minutes off their journey time as it eases congestion on the Singapore side of the borders. 

Johoreans and businesses have also urged the Malaysia government to reciprocate with a similar system, in line with plans for passport-free clearance in the proposed Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ). 

In January, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU)  to develop a framework for a legally binding agreement on the SEZ. A key part of the MOU was exploring passport-free clearance on both sides of the border, and Singapore unilaterally introduced its system in March. 

Immigration experts previously told CNA that passport-free travel at the Johor-Singapore border - one of the world’s busiest land crossings - would be a gamechanger to boost economic cooperation between the two countries. 

Passport-free travel has been implemented in other parts of the world. For instance, the Schengen area in Europe permits travellers to cross country borders without the need for passport checks. 

This includes countries such as Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. 

The United Arab Emirates is also set to implement facial recognition at its borders and remove the need to produce a passport at the port of entry.

Malaysians who travel to Singapore via these factory buses told CNA that they welcomed the move to implement QR code immigration clearance on the Johor side of the border as it could decrease travel time and ensure smoother journeys. 

Mr Meshach Raven Kelvin Suraj, who works as an aircraft engineer at Changi Airport, told CNA he typically takes 90 minutes to travel one way but he hopes that with the implementation of the QR code, this may be reduced to an hour. 

"From June, we would not even need to disembark the bus and travel up and down escalators to clear immigration. We just need to sit and wait for the officers to come to us. That saves us time and energy," said Mr Meshach Raven.

"I hope that the initiative will reduce traffic jam at the Causeway and make all our lives easier," he added. 

Mr Xi Heng Ching, who boards the factory bus to travel to and from his workplace in Singapore's Clarke Quay, told CNA that it was a relief that the Malaysia government has implemented the QR code initiative. 

"When we read that Singapore had implemented it for drivers, we were wondering when it would be offered to us passengers. Thank you, Malaysia government for thinking of us," added Mr Xi. 

"Others who have tried the Singapore QR code clearance had good things to say. We hope that Malaysia can also have smooth (implementation) of the system," said the food and beverage executive. 

Mdm Nurafiza Nordin, a representative of the firm Best Driver Transport & Travel which offers factory bus services for Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore, told CNA that the company has not received any directive from the federal government on how the initiative will be implemented. 

"We hope they will reach out soon so that we can let our passengers know what application to download and how to generate the QR code for themselves," said Mdm Nurafiza. 

She also expressed hope that the initiative will be rolled out smoothly so that it will allow bus companies to increase the rate at which they transport workers across the border. 

"We don't know how this QR code system will be like. If they implement it but it's not executed properly, there's no point. It will actually worsen congestion and cause bottlenecks," she added.

Passport-free travel in Singapore is here — but only for certain travelers

• From Tuesday, people traveling via car between Singapore and Malaysia can show self-generated QR codes rather than handing over their passports at two checkpoints.
• Authorities estimate the new procedure will reduce immigration processing time by more than 30%.

Singapore made global headlines last year when the government announced that biometric processing will replace travel document verifications at Changi Airport in the first half of 2024.

But the city-state is going "passport-free" in another area: its land border with Malaysia.

From Tuesday, people traveling by car between Singapore and Malaysia can show self-generated QR codes rather than handing over their passports at two checkpoints.

The new rule , which applies to those traveling via the country's Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, will expedite immigration clearance "without compromising on security," according to Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

Who is eligible

Singapore residents and foreign travelers can generate QR codes via the government's MyICA mobile app. Group codes for up to 10 people can be generated for passengers traveling in the same car too.

Like before, travelers are then subject to a face-to-face check by immigration officers.

However, the QR-code clearance is not available to two groups of travelers: those entering Singapore for the first time and those using a different passport from previous visits.

The new procedure is expected to reduce immigration processing time by more than 30% — saving around 20 seconds for cars traveling with four passengers and up to one minute for cars with 10 people, according to authorities.

One of world's busiest border crossings

The checkpoint linking the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore is one of the busiest international border crossings in the world.

From March 7 to 10, more than 1.8 million travelers crossed Singapore's two checkpoints that link the island with Malaysia, according to its Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

On March 8 — the Friday preceding a week-long break for Singapore public schools — a record-breaking 495,000 people crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, exceeding the 485,000 travelers recorded on August 2019, it said.

Singapore plans to roll out the QR code clearance to more travelers crossing checkpoints via other modes of transport at a later date.   

Part of a larger push

The QR clearance program is part of a larger push to modernize border control and security procedures in the city-state to manage higher traveler volume amid the crunch of its aging workforce.

Changi Airport's "passport-free" immigration clearance, which is based on biometric verification, is undergoing trials, a representative of Changi Airport Group told CNBC Travel.

A launch date for this program has not been released.

Consortium Shortlist for Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail Project Expected by June

The highly anticipated shortlist of consortiums for the preliminary phase of the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project is expected to be announced by June, according to Adam Mohamed Rahim, an analyst at RHB Investment Bank Bhd.

The announcement rests on governmental endorsement after assessments performed by MyHSR Corporation Sdn Bhd (MyHSR Corp). Earlier this year, seven consortiums, including a total of 31 companies with diverse expertise, submitted their conceptual proposals to MyHSR Corp in response to a Request for Information (RFI) issued in July 2023. The deadline for these submissions was January 15.

The results from the RFI evaluation are currently under review and will soon be presented to the Ministry of Transport and the Cabinet. If the evaluations receive positive feedback, MyHSR Corp plans to move forward by issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the shortlisted consortiums, inviting them to submit detailed proposals.

The initiation of the RFI highlights the government’s dedication to reinvigorating the KL-Singapore HSR project through innovative financing and implementation models. This effort aims to enhance rail transportation infrastructure and stimulate economic growth across the region.

Among the contenders for the project is a consortium led by Berjaya Rail Sdn Bhd, a 70 percent subsidiary of Berjaya Land Bhd (BLand). This group is collaborating with Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).

In related developments, Rahim also shed light on the upcoming Mass Rapid Transit 3 (MRT3) project, which is expected to launch between the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025. Land acquisitions for this project are scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2024, according to the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp).

Reflecting on the robust activity in the construction sector, Rahim reported that construction projects totaling RM30.8 billion were tendered in the first quarter of the year. Ongoing negotiations for the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, potentially worth over RM10.5 billion, further underscore the sector’s dynamic nature.

Progress is also evident in East Malaysia, where four out of 20 work packages for Phase 1B of the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway, valued at RM15.7 billion, have been awarded as of March 22, indicating positive momentum in the region’s infrastructure development.

As the June deadline approaches, stakeholders in the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR project await further developments with anticipation, recognizing the transformative potential of this cross-border infrastructure initiative.
