Siren Craft Brew: Brewery Tours are back!

siren header

It’s been a long time coming, but we’re delighted to announce that finally… Brewery Tours are back!

When we went into lockdown 1 in 2020, it was with a heavy heart that we had to not just pause but cancel all future brewery tours. Welcoming people into the brewery for a look around, helping them to learn about the craft beer processes and have a great day out has always been one of our highlights. We love finishing tours in our Tap Yard. Once someone has seen how we work, it’s great to see them enjoy a beer that bit more.

For our Events Manager, Matt, it was one of his first jobs here to have to reach out to everyone with a booking or a voucher to tell them the frustrating news. I don’t think anyone is more delighted than him to be starting up again, virtual tastings in the barrel store just aren’t quite the same!

siren brewery tours

So, why has it taken so long – after all, we’ve been out of lockdown for some time?

Well, quite simply we’ve just had to be very careful. We’re an independent business with a small team. We could not risk any halt in production. Mask wearing has been compulsory in the brewery throughout, as well as rigorous cleaning routines – even more so than normal.

We’ve worked hard to find the best way to get started again in a way that we can still offer the best experience, whilst making sure best practices are followed, maintaining a level of responsibility both for Siren staff, and visitors. We’re incredibly humbled by everyone’s patience and support throughout.

What can be expected from a brewery tour?

The process starts online, where you can buy either a voucher or book a place on a tour. When you’re on-site, head to our Tap Yard and check in with us – feel free to grab a beer whilst you wait! The tour lasts around 90 minutes, with backstage access to the brewery whilst learning all about our story and how we make beer from recipe to glass. We’ll finish off back at the Tap Yard where you’ll get to try some brewery fresh flagship beers, direct from the source.

Whether or not you’re coming down for a brewery tour, or just for a beer with friends, we look forward to welcoming you in soon!

The Drinks Business

Siren taps into the hop water trend with first release.

As the trend for hop water is gaining ground in the US, Berkshire-based Siren Craft Brew has revealed it is entering the category this week.

siren brewery tours

Speaking exclusively to the drinks business , Siren Craft Brew’s head of marketing Andy Nowlan explained that, for the uninitiated, hop water is “basically a sparkling water infused with hops. It’s very clean and refreshing, and expresses a very ‘pure’ hop character as well, as there isn’t interaction with any other ingredients, or biotransformation”.

The launch to release Siren’s own hop water, named ‘Hopwater’ has been an initiative that has been readied for some months behind the scenes now and, as Nowlan explained, it was “an idea that came after Siren head brewer Sean Knight and Siren founder Darron Anley went out to the hop harvest in September 2023 [to Yakima/Oregon]” and realised that “there was a buzz around hop waters from other brewers, but also the growers”.

Nowlan told db that the process to creating a hop water at Siren has been an exciting one, and certainly one that chimes well with craft adorers since it puts ingredients and aroma back at the centre of that is being produced.

He explained: “When we put so much focus on the hops, in terms of going out there to select the varieties we really want, it makes sense to be able to try these hops in their most natural state. Some of the aromas you get from hop water are like the smell you get from the hop bags, super fresh. If we see opportunities to innovate, try new things and stand out a bit, we’re never afraid to do that and take on the challenge.”

Siren has admitted that seeing hop water’s success in the US has, in part, been instrumental to this next stage for the brewery. According to Nowlan: “It has definitely inspired us and the market is growing there for it. The enthusiasm from hop suppliers about diversifying the kinds of drinks that hops are used in is exciting”.

siren brewery tours

He added that there are also many ways the category can take people’s tastebuds depending upon which drinks producers align themselves with the trend and observed: “For example, seeing hops used in kombucha, mead, cider or hop water is really fun. I believe there’s a new product being developed by BarthHaas called Hopkick that is being developed just for this.”

For Siren, the target drinker for its own ‘Hopwater’ is also very broad and in this sense there is a chance it can act as a way for people to trade up to different beer styles, or for fans of certain styles to look at alternatives to soft drinks at times.

In essence, he highlighted how it presents craft breweries with an opportunity to reach a vast array of consumers that may not already even be beer drinkers at all. Crucially, giving people an option for a drink they can enjoy that is not calorific or even alcoholic, should they want to discernably expand their repertoire without compromise. The category also lends itself as a gateway back to beer too due to the hop varieties and names becoming more familiar over time to many consumers.

He explained: “As a brewery we’re naturally appealing to fans of pale ales and IPAs as a starting point, but the early indications are that the interest could be very broad. We’ve been running trials in our tap yard and collecting feedback.

“Many people are surprised at just how much they like it, and have mentioned how it’s a better alternative for them to things like Coca Cola or fruited sparkling water, and for example would love to see it in their supermarket meal deal as much as on our bar. The interest in low and no should definitely help, although it’s probably not a ‘competitor’ to low alcohol beer, rather just another very good option.”

Other UK brewers dabbling in the trend already too include Abbeydale and Northern Monk in particular who, according to Nowlan, “were quite early on it” and he added that “at BeerX I tried the recent example from Track which was excellent”.

siren brewery tours

The hops that Siren has chosen for each particular serve is something with which the brewery has been experimenting. As Nowlan explained: “The range of flavours and aromas in hops is so diverse that you can really take hop water in any direction you like” and said that so far Siren is trialling a few different types. But, he admitted: “Single hop examples alone are working really well, before you even think about the combinations.”

The two launched by Siren are Citra and Idaho 7 and, according to Nowlan, “Citra” which is “well known” has a “grassy, dank, hop bag” aroma and would typically suit an “IPA fan” while “Idaho 7” is an “incredible hop for tropical fruit flavours”.

In terms of cost effectiveness, this is also an area where it makes sense for the craft brewer, but also for the consumer to get something completely new and with a decent volume. Nowlan told db that Siren’s Sparkling Hopwater will retail at “£1.50 for a 440ml can, making it great value in comparison to other sparkling water products”.

As for the launch, Siren has trialled its Hopwater in its tap room, and at its 11th anniversary party where people were able to try it for free, with the option to donate to local homeless charity Launchpad in exchange. Nowlan revealed that the trials have been a great input for understanding how people would drink it and where it would fit into their lifestyle needs as they flex between drinking and not drinking.

For instance, he explained: “The feedback suggests that people would be keen to pick up cans from their local bottle shops, but would also enjoy it between rounds of beer, replacing tonic water in a gin and tonic, or with a meal, which all suggest there is good potential in the on-trade as well”.

Despite the positivity of the launch, at Siren the team is still realistic about the timing of the new products and how much uptake its Hopwater will create before the trend for many more hop waters takes place in Britain.

Longer game

This is, the brewery has disclosed, simply a longer game, but one that is “exciting”.

Nowlan explained: “As this is a brand new product with no existing category, the first step for us will be to get it in as many people’s hands as possible. This way we’ll be getting useful feedback while we continue to trial and improve what we’re doing. It’s very exciting to be able to work on something like this that’s brand new, lots of unknowns but tastes incredibly good”.

To begin with, Siren is offering the first 500 people who want to try its Hopwater a free two-pack of its first two cans. “All people need to do is use the code TRYHOPWATER on the webshop from 12pm Friday 12 April”.

Nowlan added: “At this time the Hopwater cans will also be available in four-packs and 12 packs” for people who want to try it and experiment.

Last year, Iron Hill Brewery in Delaware released its own hop water flavoured with a blend of Azacca, Jarrylo, Cascade, Chinook, Cashmere and El Dorado hops and, as the trend took hold in the US, the UK eyed it with interest. Take a look back further in the UK, and you can see that Cloudwater began testing out a range of sodas that use hops as the flavouring agent for its Good Call Soda range back in 2019, however the space has largely remained a little empty as Britain catches up with available brands of low and no alcohol variants.

Never resting on its laurels, Siren has also recently been on the expansion trail of late with the planned launch of its first town centre venue at Station Hill , Reading. Plus, in terms of brewing, back in January, Siren’s founder Anley hinted about the opportunity for alcohol-free drinks to pick up the mantle while people searched for better tasting alternatives. Anley explained how breweries across Britain could lean into the trend for no- and low-alcohol variants throughout 2024 with the increase in consumers looking for zero-alcohol drinks – a consumption pattern that hop water directly answers.

An Eerie adventure: The Brewerie at Union Station celebrates half way to Halloween tours

siren brewery tours

We are almost halfway to Halloween, and The Brewerie at Union Station at 123 W. 14th St. is celebrating by bringing back its Haunted History Tours.

The Haunted History Tours usually take place in October, closer to Halloween, but because of their popularity Brewerie owner Chris Sirianni wanted to add on to the annual tradition, so he added April tour dates over 10 years ago.

“So this is the spinoff of the 20-year tradition of our Halloween Haunted History Tours which sell out very quickly," Sirianni said. "So we saw that there obviously was a want and a demand for it. So something fun to do in the spring and we would mark halfway to Halloween with these tours."

The 2-hour Halfway to Halloween Tours are similar to the tours given in October, but Sirianni said he can never guarantee what you will see when walking around the building.

“Odd things go on here, and I wish I could explain that," Sirianni said. "I let all the people on the tour understand that I’m not making anything up. We don’t populate the place or decorate the place or have anything mechanical or anything hidden. It’s all natural.”

More: Erie's Splash Lagoon nominated in best US indoor water park poll. Where to cast your vote.

What the Haunted History Tours entail

The Haunted History Tours begin by explaining the history of Union Station along with what has gone on before The Brewerie came along. This includes the people who have traveled through, certain urban legends and stories that have been passed along.

"So we talk about stories that have been passed along the way," Sirianni said. "But we talk about some of the obituaries, the oddities, the mystique and all these things that we’ve been fed over the years and we’ve read about. We package everything together in a two-hour tour.”

How did these tours begin?

The Haunted Tours generated from popular demand, starting as simple brewery tours that generated interest about the building and urban legends that have been around for decades.

Visitors passing through whether for a meal or for Amtrak found interest in the eerie tales about the building.

The tours have generated interest from local paranormal activity groups, or ghost hunters, as well.

Mike Brennan from Eerie Unknown once investigated The Brewerie with his group. While investigating, Brennan wandered off near the bathroom where he suddenly heard a noise that brought him to a halt.

Brennan heard sticky footsteps coming from inside the bathroom. When he opened the door, no one was there.

Dozens of other ghost investigating groups, coming from different regions along the East Coast, have checked out The Brewerie.

"Stand alone the tours have been great," Sirianni said. "You have beer enthusiasts, you have ghost hunters, you have historical enthusiasts, you have railroad people, you have people in town, you have people from out of town. We have people that come every year on this tour because it changes just a bit every year with the more information we get and the more history we have to share. It is so revolving and so cool to see people get excited.”

Staff ghost stories

The staff at The Brewerie can even share some personal hair-raising stories of their own when you come for a meal or drink.

"One story I have is I was in early at 5 a.m. and I got a phone call, but it wasn’t a call, it was a page from my office," Sirianni said. "Only no one was in the building and no one has a key to my office. It was not only improbable but impossible that that could be happening. I even had a ghost hunter with me when it happened."

Bartender Mike Dobson recalls opening the restaurant one morning and finding a light on in the back room. He turned it off only to find quickly after it was back on. He later confirmed with his general manager that he was the only one in the building.

The legend of Clara's stairs

One urban myth shared on the tour is a story concerning a young girl by the name of Clara.

Clara was traveling with her parents at Union Station. When they were walking up the back stairwell, Clara's father was carrying the luggage and quickly turned around to check on her, not realizing she was right behind him.

More: 2 men convicted in murder of Erie woman in dispute over broken iPad. Life sentences await

The legend then states that the luggage struck Clara and knocked her down the flight of stairs which resulted in her death.

Sirianni says that they do not have any articles or obituaries tied to the death, but there are multiple stories tied to a Clara that died upstairs at the station.

Take the haunted tour and see for yourself

Tours begin on April 17 at 7:30 p.m. They will continue on April 19 at 7 and 9:30 p.m., April 25 at 7:30 p.m., and April 26 at 7 and 9:30 p.m.

You can purchase tickets on The Brewerie website, or for $20 in person at the restaurant. For more information, call 814-454-2200.

ABOUT SIREN CRAFT BREW

Brewing beers with a story to tell..

Siren Craft Brew was born in 2013 with a simple idea in mind: to introduce exciting, full-flavoured and forward-thinking beers to as many people as possible.

Our philosophy is always to make the beer we want to make. This means sourcing the best ingredients, regardless of cost, and refusing to let anything out of the door that doesn't meet our standards. It's an unconventional approach, but one that is key to everything we do.

Take our Breakfast Stout 'Broken Dream' for instance, we felt that to get the complexity of flavour we were looking for we needed to work with a specialist in their field to pick the right coffee, the right quantity and used in the right way. In this endeavour the cost of our coffee costs more than many breweries spend on hops in a hoppy beer. But is it worth it…absolutely.

We believe that beer is still vastly underestimated in the UK. There's a beer for everyone, a whole host of aromas, flavours, colours and textures to enjoy. Our mission is to get everyone on that journey of discovery.

Our Approach To Beer

We hope that the Sirens will just be the start of your journey into beer.

Dare to venture further and you'll find a barrel cellar full of secrets. Our love affair with barrels began with our first ever brew - Maiden. In addition, we have a whole range showcasing the art of blending called Odyssey.

In 2013 we started the International Rainbow Project - pairing up breweries from all around the world to create forward-thinking beers conceptually inspired by colours of the rainbow. Since then, we've also introduced Project Barista - celebrating the amazing possibilities combining coffee and beer.

Throw in a brew schedule which included more than 100 different beers in 2023, and you'll begin to get an idea for all the hidden possibilities below the surface...

The Sound of a Secret

The Sirens of Greek mythology would entice mariners with their magical songs. Their voices would entwine into a complex, layered melody. At Siren Craft Brew, we work in a similar way, combining four ingredients that interact together in magical ways to create our ales.

The concept stemmed from founder Darron Anley, specifically his passion for the modern, flavour-forward beers that were coming to the fore back around 2010. Despite his best efforts to resist, the call of starting up a brewery persisted. He eventually succumbed in 2013 and Siren Craft Brew was born.

Next came the challenge of elegantly telling our story on each and every bottle of beer we created. With the help of a talented illustrator, the story started to come alive. We brew beers with a story to tell and want our artwork to be part of that journey. We don't use design to shout the loudest, but instead seek to draw people in with intrigue.

The famous Siren "S" even has a subtle barb at the end - now you're hooked!

Why 'Siren'?

In 2023 we celebrated 10 Years of Siren. We took the opportunity, with the help of people all over the company, to consider who we are, what we stand for, and what we'd like to guide us over the next ten years. We're right at the start of this journey, but it's now a part of how we recruit, how we train the team and how we make decisions. It's three key areas that you can expect to see us working towards at all times, whether it's in the beers, the webshop, the venues or any time you interact with Siren. Adventurous Our purpose is to create special beer and special experiences. To do that we take risks, try things out and push boundaries. We forge our own path. Humble We take nothing for granted. We value and respect our customers, suppliers and colleagues. We continuously strive to improve ourselves. No one owes us anything. Lasting We want to be here for a good time and a long time. We grow sustainably and concentrate on the future of the business, our team and our community.

Siren Values

The End Result

Whether you fancy a fruity, hoppy pale ale on a hot sunny day or an unctuous, satisfying stout at the end of an evening - we've got you covered. Read on to discover some of the beers that await, or book a brewery tour to see where the magic happens.
