Here's Where You Can Visit The House Boat From Sleepless In Seattle

Outside of Seattle houseboat

There was plenty to love about the pop culture in the 90s , including baggy jeans, neon everything, and hilarious sitcoms like " Friends " and " Seinfeld ." There were also tons of quality tear-jerking romance films, like "Ghost" and "City of Angels," that left more than one moviegoer crying into their popcorn. Among these films, there is one that might stand above the rest. Released in 1993, "Sleepless in Seattle" was written and directed by the late and legendary Nora Ephron, who was also responsible for romantic comedy classics like "When Harry Met Sally," "Michael," and "You've Got Mail," according to her IMDb . Nominated for two Academy Awards, "Sleepless in Seattle" is a story of widowed architect Sam Baldwin — played by Tom Hanks — whose young son calls into a radio help show (those were a thing back then) to explain how his father is lonely and he wishes that he would find love, according to IMDb .  After the story attracts the attention of relationship-troubled Annie Reed, played by Meg Ryan, the two go through twists and turns until finally meeting at the top of the Empire State Building for what is sure to be the beginning of a happily ever after.

The emotional movie had us hopeful and weepy. However, it also made us incredibly envious of the amazing seaside town in Seattle where Hanks' character lived. Not to mention the incredible houseboat where he resided and where some of the film was actually shot.

A look outside of the floating home from Sleepless in Seattle

Located at 2460 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, Washington, the houseboat made famous by the film "Sleepless in Seattle" rests in a waterside town right on the banks of Lake Union. However, it's not technically a houseboat, which, according to Realogics Sotheby's International Realty , needs to have a motor or other means of actually moving. This Seattle waterfront house is actually considered a floating home, meaning it is docked for good on the water but can't be put into motion freely. Regardless, the waterfront property is a dream.

Purchased back in 1987 for a reported $550,000, the home was then sold in 2008 for a whopping $2.5 million, according to  Puget Sound Business Journal . The outside of the house is just like how you remember it from the film. The white wooden shingles of the outside walls still gleam in the Seattle sunshine, and the chocolate-colored wood of the dock is kept in pristine condition. As you envision the waves lapping against the edges of the lake, you can almost picture Tom Hanks' character sitting on the iconic bench near the end of the long dock or leaning against the railing, watching the pops of the bursting fireworks. The home is privately owned, so, unfortunately, you can't take a tour inside. However, you can still catch a glimpse of the outside of the home if you're a big fan.

The inside of the Sleepless in Seattle home has modern touches

Although the outside of the floating home made famous by "Sleepless in Seattle" is easy to spot, the inside is barely recognizable. That's because the house's interior was not used in the actual film. Those scenes were filmed on a studio set, according to King 5 Evening. In the 2018 video tour of the magnificent home, we can see how much work the owners put in to freshen up their house's look. Some walls were removed to widen the area and expand the open concept of the space. The kitchen has modern appliances and a crisp white tiled backsplash.

The large wooden staircase featured in the film is not present in the actual home. Instead, a slimmer walkway leads up to the second floor, braced with black iron handrails. More up-to-date touches include a lovely sliding black barn door that passes over the entertainment area, which includes a large television and a shelf containing precious pictures. The living room, however, still has unbeatable views of sparkling Lake Union that you can see through large framed windows. Window box bench seating allows you to watch the passing boats and wildlife from the comfort of the living area. Even if you can't look at the inside yourself, there are other ways you can experience the film's magic.

Other Sleepless in Seattle locations you can visit

Although the Lake Union houseboat is a must-see, it is also worth it to wander the docks and check out some other floating homes. In fact, if you're looking to permanently live the Seattle life, you can purchase a floating house of your own on the same strip where the movie was filmed. Located at 2040 Westlake Avenue North, this one-bedroom and one-and-a-half bathroom floating home is on the market for $599,500, according to the listing on Washington Waterfronts. It includes multiple balcony spaces plus a rooftop wrap-around porch area.

There are many other locations to visit while in town, like the famous Athenian Seafood Restaurant where Hanks and Rob Reiner talk about dating while enjoying a pint. You can still sit at the bar stools where they filmed the scene, per Curbed Seattle . There is also  Pike Place Market  and the Inn at the Market , where Reiner was filmed checking out Hanks's rear end as they prep for his venture back into the dating scene. Finally, when you're ready to wrap up your film tour, you can check out Gate N7 at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where Meg Ryan and Hanks' characters first catch each other's eyes.

A Fun Place to Get Your House Fix

The Real Houseboat from “Sleepless in Seattle”

Houseboat from "Sleepless in Seattle" movie | hookedonhouses.net

The real houseboat from the classic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle  went on the market recently, so I thought it would be fun to revisit it and the sets that were designed for the movie.

Take a look!

orange-line

The Houseboat from “Sleepless in Seattle”

The Houseboat from "Sleepless in Seattle" | hookedonhouses.net

Okay, so the houses aren’t really boats because they never leave the dock, and they’re technically called floating homes , but that just doesn’t have the same ring as a houseboat , does it?

The Houseboat from "Sleepless in Seattle" | hookedonhouses.net

Houseboats have been common here since the 1890s, when fishermen and dock workers in Elliott Bay built homes on rafts.

The Houseboat from "Sleepless in Seattle" | hookedonhouses.net

According The Washington Post:

During the Depression, low-income laborers took advantage of the geography and built or moved into tax-free houseboats. The houseboat population peaked in the 1930s, at about 2,000, but has since dropped to around 500. Still, Seattle boasts one of the country’s largest houseboat communities.

Sleepless in Seattle movie houseboat

The movie was written and directed by Nora Ephron, who has a knack for bringing beautiful houses to the big screen, like Bewitched and You’ve Got Mail .

Sleepless in Seattle movie houseboat 5

Ephron was inspired by An Affair to Remember , the classic tear-jerker starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

Sam's bedroom Sleepless in Seattle

Sam (Hanks) is a widower with an 8-year old son named Jonah, who’s determined to find him a new wife.

Sam is an architect, which is one of the most popular “movie careers” for men in romantic movies. I guess women like to fantasize about having a man who could design their dream home for them! 🙂

Sam's home office Sleepless in Seattle

Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks’ real-life wife, played his sister Suzy in the movie. Even though this scene where he and Suzy’s husband Greg (Victor Garber) pretend to cry over the plot in The Dirty Dozen was totally improvised, it proved to be one of the most memorable.

Jonah doesn’t like his dad’s new girlfriend (or her laugh) and wants his dad to meet Annie instead.

The role of Annie Reed was originally offered to Julia Roberts, who turned it down.

Second choice? Kim Basinger, who said the premise was “too ridiculous.”

The houseboat used for the film went on the market in 2014

Thanks to that listing, we know it was built in 1978 and has 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. With more than 2,000 square feet, it’s the largest floating home on Lake Union.

“The houseboat, which is located at the end of a story-book dock with a flower-lined entry off of Westlake Avenue North in Lake Union, is one of the most iconic properties in Seattle.” – Puget Sound Business Journal

It reportedly sold for more than $2 million.

Wow Julia! It must take you hours to put one of these posts together! At least you get to watch the movies too!

I’ve wanted to live on a houseboat in Seattle since the movie came out. Sam is an architect and I always thought the whole life of architect on a houseboat in Seattle sounded pretty cool! I still do!

Have a great week!

The houses are nice backgrounds but the scene stealers for me in this movie were Meg Ryan’s outfits.

Her clothes (and hair) were beautiful and enviable as is typical in her movies.

Interesting tidbit, Julia, about the origin of houseboats. I had always thought they were created out of frivolity! BTW…Meg Ryan (Peggy Hyra) went to high school with my kids in Bethel, CT and shopped in the little boutique & Tea Room that I owned called, Tea & Sympathy. She was smart, popular and a real sweetheart.

My grandparents retired form their NYC jobs iin the 1950’s and moved to upstate New York, where they had purchased a big old farmhouse. They painted the master bedroom, and most of the rooms upstairs (I think there were 6 bedrooms altogether), all the same shade of pink…furniture and all…as Meg’s house…and the vintage decor, well, it wasn’t vintage yet…but it looked the same! Loved it then, as a child, and loved it again in the movie for the memories it brought. Thank you, a lovely Valentines Day post!

I also love the home where Meg Ryan and her fiance go to have Christmas Eve (where she tries on the wedding dress that rips). That’s a great old house and was decorated so beautifully for the holidays. Do you remember? I think it was the beginning of the film. My favorite is You’ve Got Mail, however. It really wasn’t all that long ago but doesn’t it seem as though movies like this are not made anymore? Makes me sad.

On another note, a friend and I were obsessed with Since You Went Away this past holiday season. What a great old film with Claudette Colbert during WWII on the homefront. And such a great house too! I did some research, and they actually built a real house and filmed inside of (not easy with those huge vintage cameras) to make it seem real. It was such a pretty house that maybe you can take a look at that one on your blog. So many houses, so little time! Thank you for your great site.

FIRST…Love your site…just love it. As to why architects are often the heroes of romantic comedy films, I think it is because the profession seems to be artful and a bit glamorous (What woman doesn’t want a guy who has his feminine side at the ready?)…and an architect by virtue of what we “think” they do, would be able to leave his desk and be in many locals at different times, which would allow enhancement of the story line. (Have to say ‘tho that an architect friend of mine told me there are only two reasons someone becomes an architect….for the love of it….or for the money. He said you can’t do both. However, the movies seem to disprove that.) I’m new to your site, but I would like to see the homes in the movie “The Holiday” with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law. You may have already featured them (there are three). If not…perhaps you could. Keep up the great work…and Thank you for the pleasure your site gives.

This is a very interesting blog for me. I love houses in films. And I love Nora Ephron films because she provides us not only with cute love stories, but also with nice houses and appartments. I really love the bed Tom Hanks has got in “Sleepless”, it comes very close to a bed from the Austrian eco furniture designer “Grüne Erde”.

My favorite Ephron movie is “You’ve got mail”, because it’s so beautiful, heartbreaking, warm, funny and you never get tired looking at it and Kathleen’s appartment is so lovely, just my cup of tea! 🙂

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that there was an incorrect fact in your post. At the time of filming in 1996 this was the largest houseboat in seattle however it has been eclipsed over the last 16 years by over 20 newer floating homes that measure from 2500 to 4000 sq ft.

Interesting! I got that information from the real estate listing for it. Thanks, Dan.

Where ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ filmed in the Emerald City

Our ultimate guide to the classic film’s actual Seattle locations

If we're talking about the film that most people identify with our city, there's really only one choice, if television’s Grey’s Anatomy or Frasier don’t count: Sleepless in Seattle .

Roll your eyes if you must, but the romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan introduced the rest of the country to Lake Union's floating homes and, for better or worse, gave East Coasters a reason to visit us more often. It’s also a multi-occasion film, with touchpoints on Christmas, New Years Eve, and, of course, Valentine’s Day.

There are a handful of popular films that were either filmed here or at least put up a good effort pretending to have been filmed here (hi, Vancouver), including Singles , 10 Things I Hate About You , Say Anything... , The Ring , Harry and the Hendersons , Fifty Shades of Grey , and the Fabulous Baker Boys , to name a few. But Sleepless is perhaps the one that’s most embedded in the cultural canon—at least, it’s the one that people know best as taking place here. (The title helps.)

We've mapped the film’s actually-in-Seattle locations out below so you can take your own, personal Sleepless in Seattle walking tour. Though if we're being honest, you're probably going to want to make it more of a driving (or light rail !) tour if you plan on including Sea-Tac Airport.

Sleepless in Seattle Floating Home

Obviously, we have to begin here. This was arguably the most desired home in Seattle before Fifty Shades of Grey came out (now, it’s tied with the Escala). Alas, you missed your shot at this Westlake floating home. It sold a few years ago for  more than $2 million .

It’s probably worth noting that the interiors shown in the film are not the actual interiors of the home, so, no, you can't get Jonah's room.

This location is approximate, but it’s just off Westlake Avenue in Lake Union. If you want to see it, the best, most respectful way to do so (people live there!) is to take one of the many lake tours that points it out.

Western Avenue and Broad Street

While getting her bearings and trying to figure out where she's going, Meg Ryan's character deals with a map and turns from Western onto Broad, headed right past the Space Needle, which needed to show up eventually. Again, it's a movie in Seattle. It's required.

Now, that location is the upper entrance to the Olympic Sculpture Park.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us in 2022 for a scenic cruise or one of our full meal experiences. We had one of our best seasons to date. With heartfelt appreciation, Mark and crew

Enchantress cruises honors, recognizes and stands in solidarity with all those who work on behalf of social justice. “blm”, sold: private fourth of july, 2022 fire-works celebration. our fourth of july event has sold this year. please see events page for details, and plan ahead for next year..

The moment you step on board the beautiful Carol M. you will be transported to another, earlier time. From a short three hour scenic cruise, which includes hors d’oeuvres, but not meals, to our full gourmet dinner cruise, we provide a truly enchanting and personal experience.

Our cruises originate on Lake Union, home of the famous “Sleepless in Seattle” and house boat community–then navigate the Montlake Cut out into Lake Washington, unless other arrangements have been made. (We do offer dock-side pickup to homes on Lake Washington.)

As you cruise along the lakeshore you will see some of Seattle’s most beautiful waterfront homes and properties, while enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres of two nice cheeses, crackers and fresh grapes on all of our cruises.

We are however best known for our dinner cruise of four or more hours, where we anchor in one of the bays on Lake Washington. There, in the stillness of the water, we serve a delicious, relaxed multi-course dinner before resuming the cruise for home.

Or if you prefer, book us to cruise west through the Ballard Locks and experience the salt air and stunning views of Puget Sound (for this cruise plan on 7 to 8 hours).

Whichever adventure you choose, you will find it to be far more than a boat ride–we are not your typical charter boat, we create memories!

Our minimum cruise is a three hour charter, includes hors d’oeuvres, but no additional meals at $770.00. Additional hours are $225.00 per hour.

Our dinner cruises require a minimum of four hours, at $995.00.

Meals are a separate charge, and average $150.00 per person. Please visit our menu page . We are not licensed to sell or provide alcohol, but if you bring it we have everything needed to manage and provide full service at no additional cost.

All our cruises are private and designed with you for your personal experience.

• We are licensed as a six-pack charter, and can take up to SIX GUESTS TOTAL. (Children must be twelve years of age or older) • We have a minimum time of 3 hours for a scenic cruise, with our most popular cruise being our 4 hour dinner cruise. • All cruises come with light hors d’ oeuvres, and a two person crew; a licensed captain, and myself, owner, host, and chef.

We look forward to seeing you on the water, Mark Lanfear

Sleepless In Seattle at 30 — retrace the Tom Hanks classic with this city guide

W ith his idyllic waterfront home In the classic rom-com Sleepless In Seattle , it’s no wonder Tom Hanks’s character Sam attracts Meg Ryan’s Annie.

The Hollywood movie, directed by Nora Ephron, was a box office hit 30 years ago and Seattle showed itself off as a fabulous location and place to live.

Sam works as an architect but, since the film was made, it’s software development that’s fuelled the affluent urban growth. Seattle’s become more diverse, vibrant, and very cosmopolitan.

This dynamic port in the Pacific Northwest is now big on the tech scene, with Microsoft and Amazon both headquartered here.

The largest city in Washington State, with plenty of parkland, there’s water everywhere and forests and mountains within easy access.

1. Cocktail cruise past Sam’s home

Seattle sits on Puget Sound, a huge coastal trough etched out by glaciers 12,000 years ago, east of the Olympic Mountain range. There’s a community of about 500 floating homes and 250 houseboats on Lake Union, which joins the estuary, and Sam Baldwin’s abode — where he lives with his son — is one of them.

Now privately owned, the best way to check out the Westlake Avenue North four-bedroom property is by boat. Canderé Cruising ( visitseattle.org ) offers private cocktail cruises for small groups or you can rent an inflatable dinghy to row yourself around.

It’s a bonus to sail with Captain Curt, as he can point out all the key sights on Seattle’s waterways. Sam’s house, which reportedly sold for $2million in 2014, is still easy to spot and you can also take in Gas Works Park and Fremont Bridge.

It’s from the bridge that Annie secretly watches Sam and son Jonah on their motorboat, determined to meet the lonely widower. (Let’s face it, she’s an unashamed stalker.)

2. The gateway to the gold fields

Several of Sleepless In Seattle ’s multi-city interior scenes were shot in Seattle, too. The walrus-adorned Arctic Building, used for a sequence in ‘Baltimore’, was built with riches from the 1896-99 Klondike gold rush. Tens of thousands prospectors scrambling to the Yukon in Canada set off from Seattle, dubbed ‘the gateway to the gold fields’. Local merchants prospered by stocking up on survival supplies for the hardy pioneers and the city thrived.

Learn more at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park display in downtown Seattle, within the historic Cadillac Hotel ( historicseattle.org ). Said to be haunted, the hotel was constructed in 1889 and, after just about surviving 2001’s earthquake, the building has many tales to tell.

If you have the time to follow the gold trail yourself, cruises to Alaska set sail from Seattle, so it’s a great way to extend your trip.

3. Fresh seafood in Pike Place Market

Founded in 1907, Pike Place Market overlooks the Elliott Bay waterfront. It began as a farmers’ market and is now a labyrinth of stalls across multiple levels, with colourful flower displays, crafts, antiques, curiosities, fruit and vegetables and very vocal fishmongers. A theatrical display of packing up iced fish draws quite a crowd.

Sam meets mate Jay (Rob Reiner) in the Athenian Seafood Restaurant And Bar ( athenianseattle.com ), at 1517 Pike Place, to talk about dating over steamed clams. Sleepless In Seattle fans around the world turn up to sit on Sam’s stool, which is helpfully marked with a plaque saying, “Tom Hanks sat here”.

4. Hotels with big personalities

Cast and crew stayed at Hotel Sorrento ( hotelsorrento.com ) during filming for Sleepless in Seattle and it doubles as The Plaza in New York. Entering the lobby is like walking back in time, with dramatic rich Peruvian mahogany panelling unchanged since 1909. Try a cocktail in the elegant Fireside Room, which has long attracted poets, artists, and performers.

We stayed at the Edgewater Hotel ( edgewaterhotel.com ), and its convenient location on Pier 67 means the views are sensational. Plus the décor is quirky, with tangled antler lampshades, plaid carpet, and tree-trunk pillars.

The Beatles stayed here on their first world tour and hysterical fans jumped into the water to try to reach them. The Fab Four were photographed fishing from their window and you can buy a mug with the 1964 shot in the gift shop.

The Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle’s largest downtown green space, is right alongside the Edgewater and the Serious Pie pizzeria ( seriouspieseattle.com ) just 15 minutes away on foot. In Sleepless in Seattle , Sam is snapped at the restaurant (formerly called Dahlia Lounge) by the private detective hired by obsessed Annie. (Run, Sam, run….!)

5. Whales from West Seattle’s sandy beach

The King County Water Taxi from Pier 50 will take you across to West Seattle and sandy Alki Beach. Annie follows Sam and Jonah here and it’s a great area for cycling or strolling, with a two-and-a-half mile-long pedestrian walkway.

In summer, don’t forget your sunscreen (yes, Seattle is sunny!). Autumn and winter are the best seasons for sighting orcas from Alki, while grey whales are most often seen in spring.

Grab brunch-to-go at Marination Ma Kai ( marinationmobile.com ), a laid-back Hawaiian-Korean café serving delicious tacos and kimchi rice bowls.

And, before you cross back downtown, stop for a coffee and a browse at Easy Street Records ( easystreetonline.com ), an independent record store and cool place to hang out.

6. Bars, clubs, and music legends

Jump on the Link light rail to reach Capitol Hill for spirited nightlife and entertainment. It’s Seattle’s LGBTQ+ epicentre, alive with artists and musicians.

Honk! Fest West ( honkfestwest.org ), in June, is an energetic community-supported street band event and the Capitol Hill Block Party ( capitolhillblockparty.com ) follows in July.

Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle and the legendary guitar player is immortalised in a bronze statue on Broadway. He has his own park, too, next to the Northwest African American Museum.

Kurt Cobain’s Fender Stratocaster is part of the Nirvana: Taking Punk To The Masses exhibition at the Museum Of Pop Culture and Kurt’s fans still head to Viretta Park, next to Kurt’s former home, to pay their respects.

7. Sky-high towers for scenic views

You can’t visit Seattle without encountering the Space Needle. Annie passes the iconic tower as she’s driving around searching for Sam and it’s instantly recognisable in long shots.

Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, the 184-metre structure’s futuristic design celebrates the Space Age. The panorama from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the circular flying saucer-inspired viewing level is a must-see.

Annie asks Sam to meet her at the Empire State Building’s Observation Deck in New York (actually filmed inside a Puget Sound naval hanger), but it would have been a whole lot easier if she’d chosen the Smith Tower in Seattle.

The stylish 38-storey skyscraper was completed with high-quality craftsmanship in 1914 and still runs beautiful brass lifts. On the 35th floor, the speakeasy-style Observatory Bar & Deck has an antique oriental Wishing Chair, said to have been gifted by China’s Empress Dowager Cixi.

Singletons who take a seat in it can expect to be married within the year. Annie, that’s all you had to do…

The Best Seattle Boat Tours

After exploring Seattle on land, snap photos of its skyline from a boat.

There's no better way to admire the stunning Seattle waterfront than from a boat. A variety of boat tours – from kid-friendly sightseeing cruises to romantic sunset sails – allow visitors to take in all the sights while enjoying a fresh sea breeze. Relying on expert input and traveler sentiment, U.S. News compiled four of the best Seattle boat tours.

Argosy Cruises – Locks Cruise

Price: Adults from $54; kids from $25 Duration: 2 hours

Enjoy the unique experience of passing through the Ballard Locks on this two-hour, one-way cruise. As you transition from the freshwater of Lake Union to the saltwater of Puget Sound, you'll hear live narration about Seattle's history and maritime industry from an onboard guide. Along the way, you'll pass some of the Emerald City's top sights, including the Space Needle , Olympic Sculpture Park and Gas Works Park, among others. Note that the cruise is one way, meaning it ends at a different location than it starts. You'll be dropped off at Pier 54 on the Seattle waterfront or AGC Marina on Lake Union. You can choose where you'd like to depart from when you book your tickets. You can also pay extra for bus transportation back to your starting point. Reviewers applaud the onboard guides, praising their knowledge of the region and their eagerness to answer questions and point out landmarks. Travelers were also pleased with the comfortable, clean boat. Some recommended avoiding the return bus service describing it as inconvenient, and instead suggested opting for your own transportation.

Tickets start at $54 for adults and $25 for kids ages 4 to 12 (children 3 and younger ride for free). Tour schedules vary depending on date and time of year; in the summer months, you can expect tours to be offered twice a day at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Argosy Cruises also offers harbor sightseeing tours.

Sailing Seattle – Sunset Sail

Price: Adults from $62; kids from $49 Duration: 2 hours

Head out for a two-hour sail on a custom 70-foot yacht to admire the downtown Seattle skyline as the sun sets. Described by reviewers as "peaceful" and a "must-do," this laid-back cruise does not include a guided commentary and does not follow a set route – the tour's course is dictated by wind direction and boat traffic on Elliott Bay. Visitors are allowed to bring any food or beverages they want on board (though glassware is prohibited, glass bottles are OK). The crew also recommends bringing a jacket or sweater in case it gets chilly – a suggestion echoed by reviewers. A word to the wise: Since the yachts were built for racing, bench seating is limited, and visitors might have to sit on the deck.

Tours are offered late April through early October. The exact sailing schedule varies by the day and month. Tickets start at $62 for adults and $49 for children ages 5 to 12. The company also operates daytime sails in the waters surrounding the city, as well as a two-hour sail on Puget Sound.

On this quick trip around Lake Union, passengers will see famous sights like the Space Needle, the Fremont Bridge, a variety of boats and yachts, and may even spot seaplanes taking off and landing, all while enjoying a cocktail (or mocktail). Travelers say the trip is relaxing and lots of fun, even for locals. Another highlight is seeing the houseboat featured in "Sleepless in Seattle."

Tickets start at $50 and include one drink. The one-hour cruise is offered eight times a day, though exact availability may vary by day. Candére Cruising also offers private outings, sunset cruises and day sails on Puget Sound.

Seattle's Tall Ship – Seattle Harbor Sailing Tour

Price: Adults from $45; kids from $35 Duration: 2 hours

Climb aboard the Bay Lady, an 85-foot tall ship, for a family-friendly sail around the Puget Sound. Departing from Bell Harbor Marina at Pier 66, this two-hour tour promises views of the Space Needle, Smith Tower and the city skyline. If you're lucky, you may spot harbor seals, depending on the time of year. In addition to two restrooms, the boat is equipped with an onboard bar. Travelers praise the attentive, friendly crew and the beautiful boat. They also say the views of Seattle and the sound are amazing.

The company sails daily, though exact times vary by day. The sailing season runs from the end of April to the end of October. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $35 for kids ages 2 to 12. Any purchases made on board cost extra. Seattle's Tall Ship also offers a sunset sail, in addition to private charters.

From the minute he brought out the large map to the last stop at Chittenden docks we were kept well informed and entertained. We really enjoyed it. The only improvement I would suggest is some sort of sticker or poster to confirm the meeting point at the Mopop turning circle. Read more Written March 31, 2024

The tour guide was informative and friendly, and we learned and saw a lot. The tour guide even went out of his way to show someone on the bus who was a fan of the show Grey's Anatomy the "Grey's Anatomy house", even though the road to the house was difficult to navigate. I would definitely recommend this tour to others. Read more Written March 30, 2024

He did an excellent job of showing us different parts of the city of Seattle and giving us history. With his guidance, we actually modified our itinerary for the remainder of the trip with some great recommendations. Boat tour of the Seattle waterfront, locks, and Lake Union.

The excellent Locks Cruise by Argosy Cruises is a great way to see Seattle, the Puget Sound, and Lake Union.

Recommended Seattle Tour The Pike Place Market Chef-Guided Food Tour is our favorite tour in downtown Seattle. Pike Place Market Chef-Guided Food Tour – Awesome tour of the specialty shops and top restaurants in Pike Place Market and a few surrounding streets. The 7 Best Boat Tours in Seattle 1. Argosy Cruises Seattle’s a harbor town, and one of the best ways to learn about the city (and see the skyline!) is via boat. The biggest and best boat cruise outfit in town is Argosy, and they’ve got many options to choose from: tour Seattle’s working harbor , or visit the floating homes on Lake Union – choose the 2 1/2 hour Locks Cruise for a bit of everything. Around the holidays, decked-out Argosy ships lead the annual Christmas Ships Festival . In the summer, take an excursion to Tillicum Village on Blake Island to learn about the area’s native heritage. Cruises last 1-2 hours, are narrated by professional guides, and offer snacks and beverage service, including a full bar. Book in advance, especially in the summer months. Tours depart from the downtown waterfront, Lake Union Park, or Kirkland Waterfront. Reviews 2. Ballard Kayak and Paddleboard April through October, Ballard Kayak and Paddleboard offers tandem sea kayak tours that depart from scenic Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. Paddle around the Sound observing wildlife like seals and otters, head out to Discovery Point in West Seattle, or venture through the Ballard Locks into Seattle’s Lake Union. Combine your trip with a stop at a boat-up restaurant for a clam chowder lunch. Kayak tours are good for all experience levels. Two paddleboard tours are offered: one specifically for beginners, and one that goes to Ballard. All equipment is provided. Tours depart from Shilshole Bay Marina in Ballard. Reviews 3. All Rivers and Saltwater Charters Experience a real Pacific Northwest saltwater fishing experience with knowledgeable guides and all equipment provided. All Rivers’ Seattle Salmon Fishing and Crabbing charters run from early July through September, departing from Shilshole Bay Marina in Ballard. Fish for King, Coho, and Pink Salmon, and enjoy crabbing when in-season (through Labor Day). Fishing licenses are available on-board, and water, soda, and snacks are provided. Outside of Seattle, All Rivers runs fishing charters on the Washington coast, as well as the Skykomish, Snohomish, Snoqualmie, and Cowlitz Rivers. Tours depart from Shilshole Bay Marina in Ballard. Reviews 4. Island Adventures Whale Watching This is the best whale watching tour in the northwest, offering service from the downtown Seattle waterfront October through March, when orca whale pods journey south into Puget Sound. (There is also the Friday Harbor Day Trip & Whale Watching from Seattle .) Experienced naturalists are in constant communication with other vessels, and take you right to where the whales are. The boat’s cabins are heated and comfortable, with binoculars and wildlife viewing guides available for on-board use, and hot and cold drinks and snacks available for purchase. At all other times of the year, Island Adventures charters depart from Everett , Anacortes , La Conner , and Port Angeles ; where guests can expect to see humpback, minke, and grey whales, as well as other marine wildlife. Tours depart from Pier 66 on the Seattle waterfront. Reviews 5. Sunday Ice Cream Cruise Seattle Ferry Service (a small outfit, not to be confused with the WA State Ferry System) runs this weekend boat tour year-round, departing Sundays from the dock at the Museum of History and Industry in South Lake Union. It’s a 45-minute narrated cruise around Lake Union, hitting highlights such as the Sleepless in Seattle floating home, Dale Chihuly’s lakeside glass-blowing studio, Gasworks Park, and a fantastic view of the Space Needle from the water. This tour is very family and pet-friendly, and there are a variety of snacks and drinks available for purchase on-board. Overall, a fun and inexpensive way to get out on the water. Tours depart from South Lake Union Park, near the Museum of History and Industry. Reviews 6. Alki Kayak Tours Scenic sea kayaking with the Seattle skyline as a backdrop. Paddle around Elliott Bay , or out to Alki lighthouse – Alki Kayak Tours’ experienced and friendly guides will fill you in on area history and local wildlife. Tours run March through September (daily in the summer months) and depart from Seacrest Park in West Seattle, which is easily accessible from downtown via the Water Taxi. For the most spectacular city skyline views, choose a Summer Sunset or Full Moon nighttime tour. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Tours depart from Seacrest Park in West Seattle. Reviews 7. Victoria Clipper This is the quickest, easiest, and most scenic way to get from Seattle to beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. The Victoria Clipper departs daily from Pier 69 on the downtown waterfront, with 2-3 sailings per day during the busy summer months. You can head up and back in one day, or spend the night in Victoria – the company offers packages that include hotel and admission to popular attractions like Butchart Gardens. The boats are clean and comfortable, though those folks who are prone to seasickness will want to take precautions – the ride can get a bit choppy once you’re out in open waters. Buy tickets online in advance to avoid waiting in line, and don’t forget to bring a passport. Kenmore Air also offers whale watching excursions and summer service to Friday Harbor in Washington’s San Juan Islands. Tours depart from Pier 69 on Seattle’s downtown waterfront. Reviews
