21 small bathroom ideas to enhance and optimize a tiny space

  • Large patterns and tiles are a trendy way to make small bathrooms seem bigger.
  • Statement lighting is another hack for making a small bathroom bright, airy, and stylish.
  • You can also turn your decor into storage so it works double duty in your small bathroom.

Insider Today

Designing or updating a small bathroom can feel like a chore, but when done correctly, it will make the biggest difference. After all, having a luxurious bathroom, no matter the size, will instantly up both your daily life and your home's resale value.

To learn the best ideas for transforming a small bathroom into a spa-like space, we chatted with a few experts. Rasheeda Gray, principal designer and owner of Gray Space Interior Design , Kelley Mason, manager of content and creative for Lulu and Georgia , and Mercedes Austin, CEO of Mercury Mosaics all reveal some of their favorite trendy and timeless small bathroom ideas.

1. Assess storage needs Center your design around how much storage you need. Mark Lopez/Getty Images

First call to action: determine the smartest storage solutions for your limited space, Gray recommends. Consider shower niches, linen storage, toiletry cabinets, and more.

You may even consider forgoing a classic vanity for something that floats to create more floor space where you can use hooks, baskets, or shelves.

Making this assessment right away will help you maximize the function of the design so it works with your overall design.

2. Befriend light, bright neutrals

When in doubt, white works wonders in small spaces. The brightness, Gray notes, helps to make the space feel much larger and it keeps you from having to worry about the "right way" to incorporate color without shrinking your bathroom.

Other light neutral tones like grays and beiges can also help small bathrooms feel bigger and warmer.

3. Liven it up with splashes of color

Color, of course, is a treat that can liven up your space. If you have sufficient lighting, whether natural or artificial, darker colors are a dramatic option that can make your design feel everything but boring.

Should your light sources be a bit dimmer, softer colors can help illuminate the space.

4. Incorporate larger patterns

Though it may seem counterintuitive, large patterns work best in small spaces because they actually make a space feel much bigger visually, while small-scale patterns do the opposite, Gray explains.

5. Make use of every surface

Nothing is off-limits when space is tight, including back-of-toilet storage, or any other surface, for that matter. Use each exposed surface as a shelf (within reason, of course).

6. Include decor that doubles as functional storage

Similarly, maximize the space you do have with baskets, cabinetry, floating shelves, and the like, so each surface looks designed but can also double as storage.

7. Layer lighting

Gray and Mason both recommend using multiple light sources in a bathroom, even if it's small, in order to make it feel more open, airy, and balanced. Try recessed lights paired with vanity lighting, sconces, or even a chandelier for an extra-luxurious retreat.

8. Splurge on shower fixtures

Budgeting can be stressful, but if you're looking for one area to splurge on in your small bathroom, let it be the bath and shower fixtures.

"Selecting a shower head that fits your needs; handheld, body sprays, rain-head, etc. will make a huge impact on a small bathroom for many years to come," Gray says.

9. Add floating or built-in shelves

Designing a bathroom for the first time may allow you some flexibility with custom built-in bathroom shelves. If you're simply redesigning or doing so on a budget, though, floating shelves are an affordable solution that are equally as trendy.

10. Choose a mirror with storage

Storage in small spaces is limited, so don't sacrifice precious wall space for a mirror that doesn't reflect your needs. Medicine cabinets or mirrors that pull out to reveal space to keep your toothbrush and other toiletries are truly a lifesaver.

11. Get creative with hooks and hangers

Build your own vertical towel rack or line the wall with a variety of hooks and hangers to allow for hanging towel storage for a more relaxed feel to a spa-like bathroom.

12. Design with a glass shower door

Showers with glass doors naturally make a space feel bigger since they don't block the full view. Plus, they're pretty stunning to look at (even in bigger bathrooms). If it fits in the budget, this is another place worth splurging.

13. Save wall space with ceiling lighting

With all your shelves, hooks, and decor, wall space can get covered up fast so ceiling lighting, whether recessed bulbs, a chandelier, or pendants, works really well in smaller spaces.

14. Organize with a trendy bath tray

Harking back to the sexy storage options, "A beautiful tray helps corral a messy vanity, and can be an opportunity to add a decor item with personality," says Austin. If your vanity isn't big enough, you can even keep it displayed across your tub.

15. Consider wallpaper instead of wall tiles or paint

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a particularly fun option for anyone who's looking to jump on a trend without making any permanent alterations.

16. Have fun with bathroom tile trends

Bathroom tile trends are seemingly evolving constantly, but if you're looking to hop on some of the most recent styles, click here for even more tips.

17. Opt for large-format tiles

Remember that pattern rule we discussed? You bet it also applies to tiles! Large-format tiles of about 4 by 12 inches or even 12 by 24 inches (with small grout lines) are best for small bathrooms to make them feel more open and less busy.

18. Use duplicate wall and floor tiles

Extending your wall tile to the floor will also help to make your otherwise small bathroom seem bigger. The continuity will trick the eye into making the room visually expand.

19. Mix and match patterned tiles

The funky thing about patterns is that as long as they're big enough, there are no other rules. Try mixing and matching your wall tiles with your floor patterns.

20. Think light and bright with white tiles

Light and bright doesn't stop at paint and other bathroom fixtures, light tiles are especially eye-catching as they can immediately elevate a small space with little effort.

21. Go to the dark side with dramatic tiles

Whether colorful or black, dramatic tile options are definitely in. Step out of (or into) your comfort zone with a bold tile option to create a statement bathroom — just be sure to balance it out with a lot of lighting.

Insider's takeaway

Never underestimate how big a difference renovating a small bathroom can make. If you're tackling this project yourself, consider your in-bathroom needs first so you can strategically pick pieces that work for them, then make them work double-duty as both decor and storage.

From there, narrow down your wall and floor treatments. Your small bathroom's color palette can be light and airy or dark and dramatic as long as you're sticking to larger tiles and patterns to create the illusion of more space. Glass showers help with this, too. And remember: if there's one thing you should splurge on, it's the shower fixtures.

47 Small Bathroom Ideas to Make Your Space Feel Bigger

small bathroom tour

The Spruce / Christopher Lee Foto

We spoke to home decorators, designers, architects, and remodeling professionals to get their best advice on how to renovate and decorate a small bathroom. Small bathrooms can be tough to design. On the one hand, because they are compact, you can save money because you are using fewer materials in the space. On the other hand, small bathrooms can be tinier than you'd prefer and often lack adequate storage —and no one likes being cramped. That's why it helps to have professional advice. Whether you’re updating your en suite bathroom, a downstairs powder room, or the bathroom you share with the entire household, here’s how to make a small bathroom work.

Meet the Expert

  • Anaïs Chaumien is the New York City-based interior designer behind Design by Anaïs .
  • Darla DeMorrow is a Certified Professional Organizer and the owner of HeartWork Organizing .
  • Stefania Filizola is a design expert at Fixr , a resource for remodeling project costs.

Make Space for a Larger Vanity

@ann.living / Instagram

According to Pamela Durkin, Interior Designer and Design Coach at Durkin Designs, LLC , a larger vanity might actually be the way to go—even if it seems counterintuitive. “Get the largest vanity you can get,” she says. “It will give you a lot more counter space and make everything look a bit bigger.”

Focus on One Pattern

@burcharddesignco / Instagram

While it can be tempting to go all-out with patterns in a smaller bathroom as a way to create a statement on a small scale, Durkin suggests taking a step back and really being strategic. “Put a pattern on the floor, for example," she says, "but keep the walls neutral by adding texture either in a molding detail or wallpaper."

Consider a Fixed Shower Panel

Emily Henderson Design / Photo by Sara Ligorria-Tramp

Instead of a sliding or swinging glass door on the shower, consider a fixed panel. Durkin suggests moving the shower handle to the open end so you can turn on your shower without getting wet. “There are now 2-in-1 shower heads so you don't have to have both a shower head and handheld,” she says.

Keep It Clean

According to Anaïs Chaumien, the New York City-based interior designer behind Design by Anaïs , anyone working with a small bathroom should keep the space as tidy as possible. “Storage boxes and baskets are your best friends if you can't add furniture," she says. "Otherwise, feel free to add floating shelves , they will help you store everything and are super easy to decorate. Choose neutral colors for the boxes and baskets so as not to overwhelm the space.”

Let There Be Light

Natural light will immediately make space appear bigger. “If you don't have a window, you'll have to add as much artificial light as you can,” Chaumien says. “Maybe change the light fixtures for a brighter/bigger one if you can, or add another light source.”

Be Strategic With Mirrors

@jennpablostudio / Instagram

Mirrors are also super helpful when it comes to emphasizing the light of the room—Chaumien suggests placing a large mirror in front of a window or positioning it to reflect a light fixture to double the amount of light. A series of smaller mirrors will multiply the effect, she says.

Don’t Overlook Accessories

Even if you need to declutter , you don't want your bathroom to look too bare. “To add decoration without cluttering the area, play with functional decoration (i.e., elements you would have to use in your bathroom anyway),” says Chaumien. She suggests starting with mirrors for light; little rattan baskets for storage; a beautiful shower curtain; or even an aesthetically pleasing bath mat.

Go for Light and Airy Colors

@jcdesign1.1 / Instagram

According to Chaumien, unless you'd like to make a statement in the room (and she wouldn't advise it if you want the space to feel bigger), go for light and neutral colors. “Neutral doesn't necessarily mean white,” she says. “Play with shades of gray, nudes, whites, light blue, pale gray, blush… Any neutral tone will immediately make space appear bigger than if you used darker colors.”

Focus on Details

Emily Henderson Design / Photo by Ryan Liebe

If you want to make a decorative statement, choose smaller details. “You can be playful with the bathroom vanity or the towel holder if the rest of the space is neutral,” Chaumien says. “Don't be afraid to use wallpaper—but again, nothing too bold. Adding a lovely light blue pattern on one wall (one wall only, please) will add depth to the space.”

Use Natural Accents

Becca Interiors

According to Chaumien, the more natural you go, the better. Natural materials such as stone, wood, linen, and wicker will add visual interest without overwhelming the room. “Too shiny, complicated, or cheap materials will draw too much attention, especially in such a small space where your eye will be drawn directly to them,” she says. And whenever possible or feasible, add plants to make the space feel vibrant and alive.

Declutter Beauty Products

The Spruce / Candace Madonna

“Declutter first and always,” says Darla DeMorrow, a certified professional organizer and owner of HeartWork Organizing . “Pick your favorite products, just enough, and stick with them. If a beauty product isn’t cutting it, gift it to a friend or toss it ASAP.” According to DeMorrow, the less stuff you have, the more space you can enjoy. This is true in the shower stall, bathtub, and medicine cabinet.

Edit Cleaning Supplies

Keep essential cleaning supplies right inside your bathroom for a quick and easy refresh. “A good all-purpose cleaner, your favorite essential oil, and a broom and dustpan—hidden in the closet or behind the door—are all you need to keep things fresh,” DeMorrow says.

Get Rid of Excess Towels

The Spruce / Letícia Almeida

Demorrow suggests keeping only two sets of towels per person unless there are particular circumstances when you might need more. “There’s no reason for more if you own a working washing machine. No matter how you stack, stash, fold, or hang them, caring for more linens than you need just takes up room and energy,” she says.

Simplify Your Linen Color Scheme

@homebypolly / Instagram

Demorrow suggests curating your towels to suit your color scheme when possible—or even better, buy all-white towels , which can be bleached and rotated out as needed.

Update Your Lighting

Design by Cathie Hong Interiors / Margaret Austin Photo

According to Demorrow, refreshing your lighting can be one of the easiest ways to add visual interest without taking up any space at all. “A single fixture in the bathroom can provide energy-efficient lighting, a fan feature, and a little glam,” she says.

Avoid Pedestal Sinks

According to James Kalim, Founder and CEO at Only Silent , a company about quiet design, you should avoid pedestal sinks —even if you love the way they look. “Although pedestal sinks are beautiful, having them in your small bathroom is not essential,” Kalim says. “This creates wasted space that you can use for storage instead.”

Hide Your Toiletries

The Spruce / Leticia Almeida

Interior designer Tom Lawrence-Levy, of Natural Asthetik , says he prefers installing custom medicine cabinets that are built into the walls when designing a bathroom from scratch in order to maximize space. “This way the mirror is completely flush with the remainder of the wall," he says, "giving the room a much sleeker feel, and hiding any clutter.” Otherwise, organizing them in drawers with spacers will keep them organized and accessible.

Consider Oversized Mirrors

“Mirroring a wall can also create the idea that your small bathroom is larger than it actually is,” says decorator Ryan Jones at Land of Rugs. “While most people will add a mirror into their space above the vanity unit, adding mirrors to an entire wall will reflect light and pattern in a superb way, making your bathroom look bright and large.” According to Jones, this works really well when incorporated with lighter colors like whites and grays.

Consider Tile Size

According to Stefania Filizola, design expert at Fixr , ensuring you have the right sized tile for your space is key to making it feel bigger than it is. “Grout lines will create a grid, using small or medium tiles will require a lot of grouting, making the bathroom feel smaller,” she explains. “Choosing big tiles that will fit in your space without the need for so many grout lines will help to expand the space.”

Use the Same Tile on Walls and Floor

“I suggest using the same tile color and pattern for the walls and the floor,” Filizola says. “This way your eyes won’t see the separation, making the walls appear to be further away and the space bigger.”

Create Storage Niches

Filizola also suggests cutting storage niches into your walls—it’s not only an aesthetic choice, but it will also improve functionality. “Instead of having cabinets or shelves protruding out of the wall and reducing the usable space, you create storage inwards so there’s nothing in your way,” she says.

Go for Polished Finishes

@kjdesignandmortarstyling / Instagram

A room lacking in natural light can look and feel closed in, but Filizola suggests adding additional sources of artificial light to compensate, especially in atypical ways. “You can use reflective surfaces like glossy tiles and polished or brass faucets to expand the light reach around the room,” she says.

Minimize Furniture

Michelle Berwick Design

Filizola suggests reducing the number of cabinets and furniture in your bathroom and keeping essential storage pieces off the floor by using floating cabinets or wall-hung linen towers. “With a more exposed floor, more light will reflect from it, making the whole space appear bigger,” she says.

Maximize Vertical Space

@dommdotcom / Instagram

As far as storage goes, thinking vertical will help you save a lot of space—and avoid visual clutter. “The space above the sink and toilet are prime areas,” interior designer Joe Cangelosi, of Joe Cangelosi Design LLC , says. “Always get a good medicine cabinet that is as tall as possible—it will fool the eye into thinking that the ceiling is higher, and can offer more storage than a smaller cabinet.” Cangelosi also suggests placing a shelving unit or cabinet over the toilet for extra storage.

Paint the Ceiling

@housetrends / Instagram

“I like to paint bathroom ceilings using a semi-gloss paint to reflect the light," Cangelosi says. "I love using a dramatic silver color to add some visual interest, bring the eye up, and reflect light to make the room seem much bigger."

Opt for Large Pieces of Art

@kaelynguerin / Instagram

Although it might seem counterintuitive, Tina Ramchandani, principal interior designer at Tina Ramchandani Creative , suggests hanging large pieces of art instead of smaller pieces, to help fill the space. “Smaller frames will draw attention to the fact that you're in a small space,” she says. “When looking at art—or mirrors—think about the frame. A slim frame will take up less visual space, whereas a thick frame may make the space feel smaller.”

Create More Space

"While it is not always an option, raising the ceilings in a small bathroom can give the illusion that the space is larger than it is," Savannah Phillips, interior designer for The Knobs Company , says. "If raising the ceiling isn't an option, another thing you can do to make a small bathroom appear larger is to recess all of the mirrors and any closets that you can."

Add Color and Shine

This petite powder room from Cathie Hong Interiors has a textured pink wall treatment that adds color and interest. A black sink adds contrast, and gold-toned metals add shine.

Brexton Cole Interiors

Brexton Cole Interiors added big personality to a small powder room by using a vintage decor scheme complete with a pedestal sink with a brass-toned base and built-in towel racks, brass light switch and electrical plug covers, an antique-style Louis-Philippe mirror, and swirly black-and-white marble-effect wallpaper.

Create Movement

In this small bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors , illustrated black-and-white wallpaper with an abstract pattern that looks like a cloudy sky or a wavy sea adds movement that helps to create the illusion of a larger space.

Add a Playful Light Fixture

Louis Duncan-He Designs / Photo by Eymeric Wildling

While wall-mounted sconce lighting is always a great idea in a small bathroom, if you have the space for it, consider hanging a playful pendant light from the ceiling instead. Louis Duncan-He Designs hung a sculptural light in this small bathroom, leaving space on the wall above the sink for a decorative mirror, and adding a leafy botanical wallpaper accent on the adjacent wall.

Split It Up

Ursula Carmona of Home Made By Carmona

Ursula Carmona of Home Made By Carmona maximized the wall space of this small powder room by splitting it into two, adding decorative molding and framed art on the lower half, and installing patterned wallpaper on top to create a layered and decorative feel that makes the modest space feel special. A modern pendant light suspended in the center of the ceiling draws the eye up and makes the space feel larger.

Add Mood Lighting

In a small powder room, why not make guests feel better about themselves by installing a decorative light fixture that will provide flattering ambient light, no filter required, like this softly lit dusky pink space from Louis Duncan-He Designs ? A vase of pretty flowers will make guests feel pampered.

Pair Gray and Gold

Desiree Burns Interiors

This small cottage-style bathroom from Desiree Burns Interiors is decorated like a space three times its size, in shades of gray and white with gold-toned accents, from the Art Deco-style fan wallpaper to the painted gray ceiling to the brassy plumbing fixtures, door knobs, and matching tissue box.

Black-and-white wallpaper depicting a pond of endless ducks adds a note of lighthearted whimsy to this little Canadian cottage bathroom from Michelle Berwick Design.

Create a Focal Point

This small bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors is visible at the end of a hallway, including a side glimpse of the toilet. But cheerful, colorful botanical wallpaper in shades of green, blue, and orange distract the eye and turns the small room into a feature instead.

Layer It Up

On the inside of this small bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors , a frameless mirror hangs over the sink, reflecting the wallpaper on the opposite wall and reflecting light. A wall-mounted sink with shiny gold-toned hardware and a fun globe light and brass sconce add some shine.

Skip the Shower Door

To create a primary en suite bathroom in a Canadian vacation cottage, Michelle Berwick Design reconverted a hall closet and two bedroom closets, leaving the shower doors off to create flow in the tight space.

Use a Dynamic Pattern

This guest bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors has a randomized mustard tile accent pattern that causes the eye to move around and creates a dynamic feel that makes the modest space feel more expansive.

Paint It Dark

While it's true that a light and bright paint color can make a small space feel larger, the opposite can also be true. Painting a smaller space in a darker color creates the illusion that the space is larger by tricking the eye into not knowing where walls begin or end. This small bathroom from Becca Interiors is painted in a deep warm gray that instantly adds dimension to the space. Thoughtful details like the vintage pedestal sink and painted wood half-shutters make it feel polished, and a large built-in mirror over the sink painted out in the same rich gray doubles views and reflects light.

Hang Dark Wallpaper

Kate Marker Interiors

If you're a fan of wallpaper, don't be afraid to choose a pattern with a dark background, like this cottage bathroom from Kate Marker Interiors which features a whimsical illustrated woodland pattern in contrasting shades of white and green. A large window allows natural light to flood in, ensuring that the space doesn't feel too dark.

Skip the Double Sinks

Design by Cathie Hong Interiors / Christy Q. Photo

Double sinks are a modern luxury that are sometimes confused as a must-have, but there's no reason why you should sacrifice counter space for an extra sink in a smaller space. In this San Francisco condo bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors , a large vanity fills the space and provides additional storage while leaving open space that makes the small room feel less cramped and leaves room for spreading out when you're shaving, blow-drying your hair, or giving yourself an at-home spa manicure.

Gray Space Interiors

While you might feel inclined to brighten up a small windowless bathroom that you use on a daily basis, if you're looking to decorate a powder room for guests, why not take the opposite approach and embrace the darkness? Gray Space Interiors added personality and created a moment of drama in this small bathroom by painting the ceiling black, then adding bold technicolor wallpaper with a dark background that will turn your at-home rest stop into a miniature escape for your guests before returning to your neutral-toned living room.

Coordinate Your Accents

In this small bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors , black accents are used on the plumbing fixtures, wall-mounted towel hooks, sink mirror, and floating shelving to create a graphic look that is cohesive, limiting visual clutter and looking effortlessly pulled together.

Accent With Patterned Floor Tile

This small bathroom from Desiree Burns Interiors has a calming palette of off-whites and taupe, gold-toned accents, and a patterned tile floor that creates a focal point.

Use Soothing Colors

This small bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors has soothing sage green wall paint that gives it a zen feel. A large mirror hung over the sink reflects the opposite staircase just outside the room, making the modest space feel bigger and more dimensional.

Play With Scale

In this small bathroom from Cathie Hong Interiors , an oversized sconce hanging above the large oblong mirror is a playful play on proportions, making the counterintuitive case that using larger pieces in smaller spaces can make them feel a bit more confident and grand.

43 Small Bathroom Ideas to Make Your Bathroom Feel Bigger

small bathroom tour

By Rachel Davies

Discover small bathroom ideas to transform your powder room.

Looking for small bathroom ideas that will make the space seem larger than life? So is most of New York City. The lack of square footage, limited natural light, and number of fixtures to squeeze in make a small bathroom one of the more challenging spaces to decorate. But when done right, the whole room can seem brighter and more spacious. And no, you won’t have to spend a zillion dollars to carve a window into the wall (or call on something retro like glass bricks).

These small bathroom ideas go beyond making the most of the available space and prove that bold design elements can be right at home in even the tiniest rooms. Here are the best ways to turn powder rooms, half-baths, and just little tiny (sometimes windowless) bathrooms into less cramped, more enjoyable situations. Your small bath may just be your next favorite room.

1. Keep Your Colors Light and Bright

This image may contain Tub Bathtub Indoors Room Interior Design and Bathroom

A wood floor and vanity give this city bathroom a warm and serene feeling. A soft mint green hue reflects natural light from the window. The space surrounding the freestanding tub makes the room feel more open, as does the lightweight curtain fabric, which allows maximum light to enter.

2. Or Double Down With a Dark Color Scheme

Contemporary Bathroom by MR Architecture Decor in New York New York

In Gilles Mendel’s Manhattan apartment, the bath’s vanity is granite and the black towels are by Calvin Klein Home.

Wait, what? “Oftentimes I like to paint small bathrooms [typically windowless rooms] a dark color, like black. It gives depth and creates an illusion of a larger space,” says Jenny Wolf of Jenny Wolf Interiors . “Go with a high-gloss in a super dark color,” advises Fleming James of Oliver Street Designs . The hue will simultaneously impart a big-night-sky effect and also bounce the little light you have around the space. (Doing so will also draw attention to the light fixtures, she points out, so you’ll need to choose them thoughtfully—bulbs that bring in plenty of light, shapes you don’t mind being pretty pronounced.)

3. Mirror a Wall

Modern Bathroom by Joanne de Guardiola and Jon Bannenberg

Even with a bold marble, this bath by Joanne de Guardiola and Jon Bannenberg feels very open thanks to the mirrored upper half.

Rather than just hanging one above the vanity, consider mirroring a whole wall of your tiny bathroom. The reflection of light and pattern (and, sometimes, that open door) will do the same good work a window does.

4. Opt for a Glass Shower Door

If you’re starting your small bathroom design from scratch, consider scrapping the curtain entirely. “I also recommend glass shower doors in a small bath, as it will help to open up the space,” Wolf says.

5. Or Remove Your Shower Door Completely

This small bathroom idea features a shower without a door.

The slightly more adventurous might even consider no shower door at all (a good drain is wise in that case).

6. Backlight the Mirror

Image may contain Indoors and Sink

“This can be a chic and modern way to amplify light,” James says, “if you do not have room for sconces or simply want a more minimalistic look.”

7. Take On Tile

bathroom with tiled walls

McGrath II used floor tile to cover the walls of this small bathroom .

Tile is a durable way to add impact and can be used from floor to ceiling. “For smaller bathroom walls , we like to specify ceramic tiles that are small,” says Suzanne McGrath of the design firm McGrath II. The designer is a fan of using one-by-four and two-by-six floor tiles—which are also less expensive—on bathroom walls.

8. Give the Curtain a Lift

room bathroom grey

If you have the luxury of choosing where your shower curtain goes, James recommends that you “take the fabric all the way up” past the usual height of the tub. “Extending the curtain nearly to the ceiling will certainly elongate the walls,” she says, adding that the taller your ceiling, the more this will help. The ceiling curtain track in  designer Ryan Brooke Thomas’s own apartment does just that.

9. Keep the Floor Clear

Traditional Bathroom by Alison Martin Interiors Ltd. and Jean Perin Interior Design in Virginia

A pedestal sink keeps a slim profile in the bathroom of Elizabeth Locke’s Virginia home.

Covering the floor with a bathroom vanity or storage containers can create a cramped space, not to mention tripping hazards. A pedestal or floating vanity keeps the floor clear, and installing floating storage will help keep everything you need at arm’s length.

10. Try a Large-Scale Wall Covering

One of our fave small bathroom ideas is this design by Timothy Whealon Inc. and Bureau D'Architecture Marc Corbiau in...

The powder room of a house in Monte Carlo features Dornbracht fittings and Phillip Jeffries wallpaper.

You might think you need to go for a petite motif, but it’s actually better to go big. “Medium- and large-scale wallpapers and tile patterns can actually make a space feel larger,” James explains. Whether you choose big tiles or an even bigger pattern is up to you; she says they’ll both “give an illusionary scale in tight quarters.”

11. Use High-Gloss Paint to Reflect Light and Amplify the Space

A lightfilled narrow bathroom is accented with a sheepskin rug and bamboo roller blinds.

Designers Casey Kenyon and Jonathan Beck’s Brooklyn bathroom feels decidedly airy thanks to light-reflecting high-gloss paint.

12. Opt for a Patterned Floor

43 Small Bathroom Ideas to Make Your Bathroom Feel Bigger

Believe it or not, this bathroom is windowless. Tall mirrored medicine cabinets and a glass shower amplify light from the interior fixtures, brightening up the space. Wolf used built-in cabinets to save floor space. A herringbone wood floor gives the illusion of a larger and warmer bath.

13. Add a Shower Niche

shower niche

Another major space saver? A shower niche . If you’re designing a small bathroom, make sure to include a shower niche in your plans.

14. Use a Ledge to Create Space

Colored tiles in the bathroom of a renovated row house in Brooklyn New York.

A narrow ledge in front of the mirror in this GRT Architects–designed bathroom is the perfect perch for a plant, toothbrush, and other essentials.

15. Move Your Towel Bar

Image may contain Indoors

In a West Village powder room by designer Ashley Darryl, a towel bar is fastened to the side of the floating sink.

16. Rethink Your Sink

triangular corner sink with rounded edges

If you’re designing your tiny bathroom from scratch ( or remodeling ), a tiny corner sink may be among the most handy simple small bathroom ideas. There’s no rule that says you have to have a full-size standard sink. A corner sink gets the job done just as well—plus it gives you plenty of space and less to clean.

17. Choose Compact Pieces

sink bathroom shower

Hulking vanities and blocky tubs may look at home in a larger bathroom, but they can make a small bathroom feel claustrophobic. Install compact toilets and sinks or consider floating versions to open up the space, like in  this 650-square-foot apartment designed by Brett Masterson. If a tub is a must, consider a Japanese soaking tub to add serenity without taking up square footage.

18. Consider Closed Storage to Stay Organized

Image may contain Indoors and Room

Bottles and tubes scattered on the countertops are guaranteed to distract from even the most gorgeous room. Samuel suggests closed bathroom storage, such as a linen closet or vanity with drawers and doors, to keep things tucked away. “Display only your favorite and most frequently used, well-designed products.” In  this 323 square foot Italian pad by the founders of SCEG Architetti, the exterior of the vanity can really sing thanks to the lack of clutter.

19. Curve Some Surfaces

Image may contain Room Indoors Bathroom Interior Design Toilet and Shower

Reclaim some of your space with a curved sink or shower. It might not seem like much, but it can make a difference, especially in a tiny space where real estate matters.

20. Add Stylish Shelving

bathroom

Forget anything basic. Opt for a sleek shelf that fits your decor and gives you extra space (a precious commodity in a small bathroom), like in  this bathroom by Fanny Abbes, the creative director of the New Design Project, which employs acrylic shelves that perfectly match the rest of the bathroom feel.

21. Choose a Wall-Mounted Faucet

Discover small bathroom ideas to transform your powder room.

Not only is a wall-mounted faucet a real space saver, it’s also stylish, modern, and easy to clean.

22. Get Creative With Storage

Image may contain Animal Bird Indoors and Tub

In cramped rooms, any open space is an opportunity. If there’s a niche, add open shelves to make use of that dead space, just as  designer Madelon Oudshoorn Spaargaren did in her Amsterdam home.

23. Add a Ladder for Towels

Image may contain Sink Faucet

We love this country-chic small bathroom that gets creative with a ladder. It can hang more towels than a bar, and it gives the bathroom a unique feel. If you don’t have enough space for a ladder that stands alone, choose one that is made to sit above a toilet.

24. Pare Down Your Bottles

The bath.

Let’s be honest: We usually don’t need all those toiletry bottles. Streamlining your grooming products will give you more space, so do a Marie Kondo and pare down your shampoo collection. Or, at the very least, store the products you don’t use daily somewhere other than your counters or bathtub ledges. Getting rid of any clutter will make your small bathroom seem much bigger.

25. Install a Skylight

Bathroom renovated with mosaic of grey tiles. Washbasin shower and skylight. No one inside

Bathroom renovated with mosaic of grey tiles; a washbasin, shower, and skylight.

This is one of the more ambitious small bathroom designs, but it will make a major impact. Installing a skylight will open up your entire bathroom and significantly brighten the space.

26. Get a High Tank Toilet

Image may contain Tub Clinic Interior Design Indoors and Room

When stuck with a bathroom that’s cramped but features inordinately tall ceilings, a high tank toilet can be just the thing to distract the eye. In this  Beata Heuman–designed apartment , a bold paint color is used to double down on those tall walls.

27. Try an Interesting Tile Pattern

Image may contain Furniture Indoors and Room

No matter what color bathroom tile you go for, arranging them in an interesting pattern can up the visual interest. The options are practically endless: This Paris apartment features a zigzag herringbone design with a bright white grout against the dark tile.

28. Pick Natural Accent Colors For a White Bathroom

Image may contain Indoors Room Bathroom and Sink

If you want your bathroom to be calming no matter how cramped it is, use a natural color palette and don’t worry about painting the walls. Despite the bright flooring in her own apartment,  architect Corey Kingston paired a terracotta curtain and bathmat with wicker baskets for storage. If you’re set on subway tile, natural colors pair well with them too.

29. Go for a Theme

Image may contain Indoors Room Bathroom Plant and Toilet

“Especially for a bathroom with an unusual shape, going after a theme can help make the space feel more cohesive. I had a friend growing up who had a bathroom with a theme of lips. Her mother loved lips. I loved that bathroom and found it incredibly fanciful,” homeowner  Fanny Singer said during our tour of her space , explaining how she arrived at the bum-centric art in her bathroom. “I’m not going to go to that degree, but it just became a thing.”

30. Go for Unusual Shapes

Image may contain Indoors Room Bathroom Toilet Interior Design and Lighting

Architect Vincent Appel paired a round floating sink with a Gio Ponti mirror in a  300-square-foot apartment’s minimalist bathroom . Without creating chaos in the small space, these two pieces added plenty of personality.

31. Use Brass Hardware

Image may contain Indoors and Room

Brass hardware and fixtures can add an unexpected, refined look to any bathroom—no full renovation needed. Though the difference is slight, this  Margaret Costello–designed bathroom still looks luxurious thanks to its impactful fixtures.

32. Go Monochromatic

43 Small Bathroom Ideas to Make Your Bathroom Feel Bigger

Nearly everything in  this bathroom is pink—floor tile and tub included—and we love the look of a monochrome escape. Though this bathroom is vintage, it’s easily replicable for any design sensibility.

33. Get A Mirror with Built-In Storage

Image may contain Sink Faucet and Indoors

The best small space pieces are multifunctional, and a mirror that also offers storage can be a life saver. The medicine cabinet is the gold standard, but if that feels a little too retro, try a mirror with shelves, like this one in a New York City  apartment designed by Project AZ.

34. Use the Space Above the Toilet

bathroom with wood hand models on top of toilet and strings of beads hanging from antlers

Whether you use it for storage or for eye-catching decoration, as  designer Philip Gorrivan chose to , do not leave the space above the toilet empty.

35. Skip the Full Towel Rack

powder room

If your extra-small bathroom doesn’t have storage space, don’t force it! Skip a full towel rack and add either a hook for shower time or a small rack for a hand towel, as in this  Noz Nozawa–designed space .

36. Simplify It

Sink Faucet Sink Lamp Basin Plant and Cup

When dealing with a powder room, keep things as simple as possible. There’s no need to add storage space if you don’t have much to store, and your space will be all the more pleasing for it! We should all take the note from this Chicago home designed by  Wendy Labrum .

37. Stick to Evocative Neutrals

Lamp Sink Faucet Sink Cup Bathroom Toilet Indoors Room and Corner

Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring! This Aamir Khandwala–designed space  employs a deep beige to create a room that is both calming and dynamic.

38. Add a Fun Pendant Light

pink bathroom

In bathroom design the focus often lands on sconce lighting, but a fun pendant light can serve as an impactful focal point, no matter the square footage of your bathroom. For proof, just take a glimpse at this  Jake Arnold–designed bathroom’s rattan pendant.

39. Mirror Multiple Walls

Image may contain Sink Faucet

Adding multiple mirrors to a space not only makes it feel bigger, it also has the potential to create a memorable fun house-like vibe in the bathroom. Wouldn’t you want to take a selfie in this space designed by homeowner Chris Aswad ?

40. Match Your Hardware Finishes

Image may contain Indoors Room Bathroom and Plant

Tying everything together in your bathroom can be satisfying even if it may not make the space feel larger, exactly. In bathrooms that feature a glass shower door or wall, like this  Dumbo loft’s , tie the shower in with the rest of the space by matching the finishes of the sink, light fixtures, and towel rod.

41. Add Shallow Shelves for Trinkets

Image may contain Interior Design Indoors Room and Corner

If you don’t want to dedicate counter space to items that are purely for decorative purposes, shallow floating shelves will take up a small footprint in your space but still allow for much more personality than a cramped vanity ever could.  Photographer Coke Bartrina’s filled his simple shelves with small plants.

42. Go for Terrazzo

bathroom with terrazzo tile and teal sink

As far as we’re concerned, terrazzo is timeless—just look at  Matthew Stewart’s gorgeous terrazzo-lined bathroom ! With the mesmerizing pattern enveloping the room, it’ll be hard to stress about lack of space.

43. Add a Gallery Wall

Image may contain Indoors Room Bathroom Interior Design and Toilet

Though it might not be the first place to spring to mind for your art collection, a gallery wall is sure to add a stately air to even the tiniest of bathrooms. Going for all black and white prints ups the classiness factor, as the bathroom at designer Peter Sandel’s own studio apartment proves.

50 Small Bathroom Ideas That Make a Huge Impact

Make the most of a small bathroom with these 50 imaginative ideas.

small bathroom tour

archigram / GETTY IMAGES

Sometimes, it’s the smallest spaces in our homes that hold the most potential. This is certainly true of petite and humble bathrooms. Though function is their first priority, small powder rooms and bathrooms provide a blank canvas for us to tap into our creative prowess and dabble in self-expression. What’s more, because of their small size, it’s possible to deliver major impact with even the tiniest changes.

Whether lightly sprucing up your space or going in for a major overhaul, these small bathroom ideas will certainly ignite your imagination.

Install a Wall-to-Wall Sink

J.L. Jordan Photography, Bethany Adams Interiors

It's crucial to leverage every square inch of precious space in small powder rooms. One way to do that is to install a vanity and sink that stretches from wall to wall, as seen in this design by Bethany Adams Interiors .

Keep It Crisp and White

Kelsey Ann Rose

A bright and neutral color scheme can help make a small bathroom sparkle. Take your cue from Elizabeth Vergara , interior designer and founder of Vergara Homes, by adding dimension via veining in a stone sink top, light fixtures, and tiny details.

"Choosing an all-white color scheme is a smart idea for a NYC apartment or small space because it maximizes space by reflecting light, offers timeless versatility for various design styles, and provides a neutral backdrop for easy decor changes in a limited area," Vergara says.

Pick a Focal Color

Pixel Sold Photography

"When choosing colors for a small bathroom space, don't be afraid to pick bold colors for the focal point that will give the small space that wow factor," says interior designer Amy Switzer . "Lighter colors will always make a space appear larger than it is where this bathroom is prominently white, which elongates the space."

Swap in a Vanity

Anna Spaller for Chasing Paper

Maximizing the square footage and organizational options in a small bathroom is crucial. "Think through the layout to maximize how you are able to use the space efficiently," says Elizabeth Rees, co-founder of Chasing Paper . "For example, you could choose a vanity instead of a pedestal if you need a place for storage."

Bring the Garden Inside

Kyle Wodarczyk

Bring the outdoors in by infusing green touches throughout your small bathroom, as done here by interior designer Libby Palmieri , founder of House of L Designs. A ribbon of green subway tiles, floral wallpaper, and a green vanity make this space dreamy and welcoming.

Don’t Shy Away From Black

Molly Culver

While light and bright is beautiful, there's something innately alluring about a moody black bathroom.

"For this powder bathroom, I painted the entire room—walls, ceiling, etc.—in Benjamin Moore's Tilled Soil," says interior designer Mary Patton of Mary Patton Design. "Even though the space is small, the rich, dark color creates depth. And, when paired with a modern sconce and a vintage French print, the space becomes a layered mix of modern and vintage."

Install Frameless Glass Shower Doors

Frameless glass shower doors look chic, but they can also create the illusion of a bigger bathroom. "The frameless glass doors were used here to create a further sense of space and remove the sense of a physical divide from the shower to the rest of the bathroom," Switzer says.

Paint Your Vanity

Stephen Busken

A simple painted vanity with a beautiful stone countertop and unique hardware can dress up a space, says interior designer Annette English . Here, she chose a deep navy color with gold hardware.

Opt for Glass Shelves

For a super streamlined aesthetic, use glass shelving. This pairs beautifully with the glass shower door, chrome faucet, and chrome lighting.

Add Custom Built-Ins

Michael Kaskel

Custom built-ins—as pictured in this design by interior designer Maggie Winshall —are a brilliant choice in small bathrooms because they optimize storage. "We always make sure we build our built-ins to seamlessly integrate with the room's architecture," Vergara says. "This will enhance organization, and it’s a practical solution to maximize the space and functionality in small living areas." Built-ins can also potentially add value to your property.

Add Recessed Shower Shelves

Sam Lund, Simply Sam

Similarly, bathrooms can start to look cluttered very quickly when items don't have a place to go. Recessed shelves in the shower are convenient, save space, and give essentials a home.

Est Est Interior Design

Small bathrooms and powder rooms provide us with an opportunity to be a little more playful than we might be elsewhere. "Here, I went with an unexpected wild graphic wall covering and locally sourced a custom mirror that was a funky shape to play with the scale," says Chris Jovanelly, lead designer for Est Est Interior Design .

Pay Attention to the Details

Madeline Harper, ATX Interior Design

Styling a small bathroom is akin to getting dressed in the morning, English says. "You start with the basics, but once you add the scarf, cufflinks, hat, belt, and jewelry, you can take an ordinary concept and make it unique and special by layering in some key elements."

That concept is demonstrated beautifully in this small bathroom design by ATX Interior Design .

Experiment with Statement Tiling

Cory Rodeheaver, Spectrum Design Group

Don't feel like you need to stick to the basics with your bathroom flooring. In this design by Dawn Bane Spectrum Design Group , intricately shaped green tiling adds gorgeous contrast against a wood vanity.

Consider Pink and Gold

This grownup pink bathroom, designed by Palmieri, features a textured pink wallpaper, a gilded mirror, and crisp white details elsewhere.

Add Whimsy With a Vintage Hutch

Whitney Leigh Morris

“Unexpected furnishings like slim, vertical hutches are a way of introducing aesthetically pleasing, functional solutions into a compact bathroom,” says Whitney Leigh Morris, designer and spokesperson for Micro Cotton . The white-washed wooden texture adds an extra sense of earthiness.

Try Some Bold Wallpaper

Anna Spaller for ChasingPaper

This teeny bathroom comes alive with splashy wallpaper. "A small space is the perfect place to have some fun," Rees says. "Take a risk with a saturated paint color or bold wallpaper print."

Install a Walk-In Shower

A walk-in shower removes the bulkiness of a tub. It also creates a sense of seamlessness between the bathroom and showering space.

Lean Into Minimalism

Jeff Streich, Prime Renovations

If bright colors or artsy details aren't your thing, take your cue from Jeff Streich of Prime Renovations . This black, gray, and white palette has a chic, urban hotel aesthetic.

Hang a Wow-Worthy Mirror

To make a real statement, hang a mirror that'll make everyone say "wow!" the second they step into your small bathroom.

"The client loved jewel tones, so I mixed Schumacher’s Queen of Spain wallpaper in the blue colorway with an emerald green mirror, refreshed brass hardware, and lighting," says Patton.

Bring in Texture with a Rustic Vanity

Brian Bieder

This small bathroom designed by interior designer Maggie Griffin doesn't shy away from texture. The rustic wooden vanity showcases its beautiful natural grain, which is perfectly complemented by a stone sink and chinoiserie wallpaper.

Aim For a Soothing Sanctuary Aesthetic

"Combine function with form by outfitting the space for ease of use while mindfully selecting materials, hues, and textures that enhance your decor and establish a soothing sanctuary," Morris says.

Consider a Color Infusion

Color lovers, take your cue from this Moroccan-themed bathroom designed by Sam Lund of Simply Sam . The colorful mirror frame and rug, paired with splashes of yellow, feel fresh and happy.

Dive Into Elevated Nautical

Emily Followill

The nautical bathroom theme is a staple for a reason. Elevate the aesthetic, like interior designer Liz Williams did here, by incorporating playful touches throughout. This small bathroom features gorgeous textured wallpaper that gives the illusion of waves, unexpected splashes of bright green, beautifully framed photographs of fish, and maritime scones.

Add a Small Bench

A large bench isn't really feasible in a tiny bathroom, but a tiny bench tucked just outside of the shower offers a place for towels and other necessities to rest while you bathe.

Opt for a Floating Vanity

Block Renovation

Floating vanities are trending partly because they offer an unexpected design touch to the bathroom, but they also serve a function. The bathroom appears more spacious because the vanity allows the flooring to extend all the way to the wall.

Hang Chic Medicine Cabinets

Nicole Dianne Photography

As old school as they may seem, medicine cabinets are a bathroom mainstay for a reason.

"Countertop clutter can make even the most well-designed and beautiful bathrooms feel small. Installing a medicine cabinet keeps small bottles concealed while maximizing functionality and aesthetics, too," says Ashley Macuga of  Collected Interiors . "The good news is that the options for attractive medicine cabinets have skyrocketed."

Leverage Wall Space

"Take advantage of your small bathroom’s wall space," says Morris. "For example, consider wall mounted storage and towels suspended from hooks rather than a traditional, space-consuming towel bar."

Incorporate Accent Pieces

Madeline Harper Photography, Anastasia Casey Design

English says she likes to treat small bathrooms as a jewelry boxes. "It’s a wonderful opportunity to make a maximum statement using a few key elements," she says. "Amazing sconces, artwork, tile, paint and plumbing go a long way to making a small bathroom become a special room."

Even tiny details can offer quite a bit of impact, as you can see in this small bathroom design by Anastasia Casey . Black tiling, a gorgeous vanity, framed oil painting, and industrial vase with pink roses help bring this space to life.

Install Custom Recessed Medicine Cabinets

Medicine cabinets are inherently slim, but you can save even more space by installing as a custom-designed recessed medicine cabinet and mirrors, Rodeheaver says.

Utilize Slim Storage

Nicole Dianne Photography, Collected Interiors

A slim ladder adds character to a small bathroom while also serving as a place to hang your towels. The wood texture of the ladder in this design by Collected Interiors also lends some warmth.

Hang Floating Shelves

Shelf brackets can add a cluttered feel while also taking up precious real estate space. Opt instead for a floating shelf.

Splurge on a Special Piece

Stacy Zarin Goldberg Photography, Unique Kitchens and Baths

Small design projects tend to have lower costs. If your budget allows, don't be afraid to splurge on a wow-worthy detail. Take, for example, the stunning black marble sink seen in this small bathroom project by Unique Kitchens and Baths .

Lay Dark Flooring

Dark floors add both a feeling of warmth and luxuriousness to a small bathroom. They also contrast beautifully with an otherwise crisp white aesthetic. Tie everything together with additional black details—including hardware and planters—like in this design by Block Renovation .

Try a Frameless Shower Door with Metal Work

If you like the concept of a frameless shower door but want a bit more dimension, consider one with metal latticework, like in this small bathroom design by Block Renovation . It creates a bit more separation between the shower and the rest of the room, but still helps the space feel large. It also lends a sense of urban sophistication.

Maximize Countertop Space With a Single Sink

Even if the space technically allows for two sinks, you still might consider just one to allow for more counter space. In this small bathroom design, two faucets flow into one large sink for a creative spin on the standard double sink option.

"When designing, we wanted to keep the integrity while improving the function," says Cory Rodeheaver of Spectrum Design Group . "It was small, but [the client] wanted a space that could be shared simultaneously. To achieve that, we designed a large custom barrel sink with two faucets that two people could use at the same time."

Mount Vertical Lights

In small bathrooms, even wall space can be hard to come by. For a creative solution that doesn't sacrifice on style, consider narrow, vertical lights as pictured here in a design by interior designer Cory Rodeheaver of Spectrum Design Group .

Build Out a Dark Shower

Jess Isaac, The Layered House

A black bathroom promises instant glam. In this design by Los Angeles-based design firm The Layered House , shiny black tiling in the shower adds texture and high drama. The leopard wallpaper and matte black countertop lean into the moody theme.

Make Use of Natural Light

When possible, incorporate as much natural light into your small bathroom as possible. This may include installing a new window, widening an existing window, or adding a skylight. You can also increase natural light by using sheer window dressings if any at all.

Elevate With Wainscoting

Madeline Harper Photography

Wainscotting is especially trendy right now, but this subtle design feature has stood the test of time which makes it a safe bet. This doable DIY quickly elevates a small bathroom—and with very little effort required. In this bathroom by ATX Interior Design, the wainscotting quickly elevates the entire space.

Try Statement Lighting

Christopher Churchill

"Powder rooms don’t have to have the same functionality as a primary bath when it comes to things like lighting," says Jovanelly. He says to get playful with your lighting choices, which makes for a fun experience for you and your guests.

Don't Forget Plants

Trevor Tondro

Incorporating living plants into your bathroom can help it feel like more of an oasis. To leverage available space, hang plants from the ceiling or tuck them into corners.

Embrace Earthy Tones and Textures

Kelly Brown

Earthy elements can make small bathrooms feel extra cozy and inviting. In this design, a handsome wooden statement sink offers instant wow and is complemented by gold fixtures, a wooden mirror, and recessed shelves painted in a beautiful clay hue.

Incorporate a Pop of Color

Katie Charlotte, courtesy of Cortney Bishop Design

A pop of color quickly lends character to a small bathroom. This bright bathroom design is mostly white but sidesteps the expected via a modular vanity painted in a bold hue. Colorful vases and a blue door add even more depth.

Opt for a Small Sink

Jennifer Hughes

Space is especially sparse in half bathrooms, which means a tiny sink may fit the room more organically. This black marble sink is small in stature and helps save space, but it still makes a statement.

Install a Gorgeous Tub

Dana Gallagher

If you're a serial soaker, don't feel like you have to abandon your dreams of a luxurious tub in a small bathroom. The key is to maximalize the existing as best as you can. If you want a shower and a tub, install a showerhead on the wall that empties into the tub.

Go Minimalist-Maximalist

Heather Hawkins

This small bathroom effortlessly blends minimalism with maximalism. The colorful tropical wallpaper does the most work and is tempered with a simple white sink and mirror.

Make the Shower a Star

Fun tiling in your shower can make this part of a small bathroom feel particularly special. In this space, a blue quilt-like pattern wows in an otherwise simple design.

Install a Hook Rack

Janelle Jones

A hook rack is a smart way to leaverage wallspace in a small bathroom, and it also provides a home for towels and other odds and ends.

Ground the Space with a Rug

Kimber Collective

Forget the expected bath mats and instead lay a beautiful rug. This runner sits between the sink and shower—and just in front of the tub—providing warmth and character.

50 Small Bathroom Ideas That Will Make Your Space Seem Bigger

Bathroom countertop

A small bathroom is certainly a challenge. Between fitting all of the fixtures in, making sure it's functional and leaving enough space to move about, it can seem almost impossible to have it all. But the good news is it is possible with some creativity, design ingenuity, and simple fixes.

Not only can you have everything you desire in your small bathroom, you can also use the size to your advantage if you're big on style. According to HGTV , these rooms are the perfect opportunity to splurge on design and decor. Less square footage amounts to less investment, so it's more of an incentive to go for that extravagant tile or vanity you've been eyeing.

Ahead, you'll find 50 ideas to give your small bathroom the appearance of being bigger than it is. Whether you're remodeling it, building it from scratch, or just making cosmetic updates, any of the following solutions will give you the inspiration you need.

1. Lighten up the walls

The first rule of thumb in making any space seem larger is to keep the walls as light as possible. Whether it's the paint or the tile, opt for white to keep the bathroom bright.

2. Keep the floors light

If you want to infuse a bit of color into the walls or even the vanity, consider keeping the floor tiles a lighter color. It will visually expand the walking space in a small bathroom.

3. Establish an overall light palette

As you may have already guessed, when in doubt, stick with a light color scheme throughout the whole bathroom. Pick any shade of white for the walls, flooring, and all of the fixtures.

4. Infuse natural accents

Natural accents such as wood, seagrass, and bamboo add warmth to any space. A small bathroom is the perfect opportunity to infuse some of these elements, giving it a spa-like feel.

5. Embrace a minimalist style

Minimalism is essential for a small space. In addition to keeping clutter at a minimum, embracing a simple style for your bathroom makes it feel less crowded and more open.

6. Hang floating shelves

Use your vertical space to your advantage. Hang floating shelves to give you additional storage without sacrificing any square footage.

7. Install a medicine cabinet

While you may see trends leaning towards hanging regular mirrors above the sink, it limits the amount of storage you could have. Installing a mirrored medicine cabinet is the best of both worlds — especially if there is little room on the countertop or in the vanity drawers.

8. Use a ledge

If you prefer to hang a mirror but need a spot for your everyday essentials, consider installing a ledge just above your sink. Similar to floating shelves, this gives you additional storage without actually sacrificing any space.

9. Take advantage of the toilet

The top of the toilet is a prime spot to take advantage of in a small bathroom. Use a basket or a tray to corral extra rolls of toilet paper, tissues, or a candle. It adds a bit of personality while adding functionality.

10. Ditch the bulky vanity

There's no need for a large vanity in a small bathroom. Opt for a pedestal or console sink instead. The slimmer fixture will take up little space and give the illusion of a bigger room.

11. Consider a floating vanity

A unique alternative to a floor-mounted vanity is a floating one. This is particularly helpful if you'd like to store a hamper or basket with extra towels as it easily slides underneath.

12. Put the sink in the corner

A sink placed in the corner may seem like an odd idea but, in a very small bathroom, it's a life saver. Install the sink in an easy-to-access corner of the bathroom and watch the space open up.

13. Add a towel bar

A towel bar is a necessity in any bathroom, but it can take up space much needed wall space. The solution? Hang one on the side of the vanity so that it's out of the way but within reach.

14. Roll your towels

Rolling the extra bath and hand towels not only looks like you've walked into the spa, it also saves space in your small bathroom. Use a basket or an open shelf to display them for easy access.

15. Lean a ladder

Incorporating this popular living room trend into your small bathroom ups the design element and saves you space. Instead of folding blankets over the rungs, use it to display extra towels.

16. Befriend baskets

Hiding visual clutter is crucial in a small room. Keep toiletries, extra toilet paper, or towels in baskets to keep the design look as minimal as possible.

17. Hide the extra TP

Instead of the conventional toilet paper holder seen in many bathrooms, skip it and save some floor space. Use drawers, cabinets, or even baskets (as just mentioned) to store the extra rolls.

18. Carve out a shower niche

Small bathrooms usually equal small showers. Give yourself some extra room while scrubbing yourself by installing a recessed niche to hold products such as your shampoo and body wash.

19. Match your toiletries

Whether it's in the shower or on the countertop, matching bottles gives a streamlined look. Splurge on matching containers to fill with your products. As a bonus, this is helpful if you frequently buy in bulk (which is great for the environment and  your pocketbook).

20. Opt for a glass shower door

In lieu of a traditional shower curtain and rod, which visually divides the bathroom, choose a glass shower door. This opens the whole space, making it appear much larger.

21. Choose a small tub

Even if you have a small bathroom, that doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy little luxuries. You can still have your nightly baths, just be sure to choose a small tub to fit in the space.

22. Extend tile into the shower

By installing tile that extends throughout the whole bathroom, including the shower, it gives a cohesiveness to the space. It tricks the eye into making the room seem bigger than it is.

23. Create a wet room

A popular method to finding more space when it comes to the shower is to create a wetroom. The shower floor is at the same level as the rest of the bathroom, giving the room an overall sleek look.

24. Lay a tub tray

Whether in use or not, laying a bathtub tray down gives an elegant feel to the bathroom and provides additional storage space for salts, scrubs, and soaps.

25. Incorporate built-in shelves

Built-in shelving works two-fold: It gives you a lot of extra storage and it adds unique character to the bathroom.

26. Consider a sliding door

If the bathroom is particularly tiny, then consider alternatives to a regular door. A sliding barn or pocket door makes a significant difference in how big the room feels.

27. Curve the fixtures

Save yourself from bumping into the toilet, sink, and shower in a small bathroom by choosing ones that are curved rather than rectangular.

28. Install a streamlined vanity

A vanity with no handles or knobs means there are less things to bump into or get snagged on your clothes. Not only that, choosing a vanity without hardware gives a seamless, contemporary look to a small bathroom.

29. Add luxury accents

If you don't have space for even a small tub, you can still give your small bathroom a spa look and feel. Install a rainfall shower head and hang dried eucalyptus leaves, which will make it smell luxurious.

30. Match the fixtures

Tying a room together makes it seem bigger than it is. Use cohesiveness to your advantage and match all of the fixtures from the faucet to the toilet-paper holder in your favorite finish.

31. Mount the faucet

Save space by mounting the faucet and handles to the wall rather than the countertop. This method also allows you to have a basin sink, which adds some serious style to a small bathroom.

32. Install task lighting

Lighting is an important element in making a room seem bigger and brighter. Install task lighting above the sink (or wherever you need) to shed a little extra light in the bathroom.

33. Think about a skylight

If it's possible, install a skylight to really open up the room. The natural light goes a long way in making the bathroom look larger.

34. Enlarge the mirrors

Mirrors reflect light and expand a space using illusion. So, go as big as possible when it comes to picking out a bathroom mirror to hang.

35. Backlight mirrors

As already noted, adding any extra lighting to a small bathroom is always a good idea. If natural light is lacking, look for a backlit mirror to hang over the vanity.

36. Consider a mirrored wall

We know that mirrors create an illusion of a bigger space. Consider creating a mirrored backsplash behind the sink, or even putting a mirror on an entire wall.

37. Use horizontal lines to your advantage

Stripes are also a simple way to trick the eye into thinking a space is bigger than it is. Whether using shiplap, paint, wallpaper, or tiles, try using horizontal lines to widen the bathroom.

38. Create an accent wall

A petite bathroom is the perfect place to show off a unique style on a small scale. Use the opportunity to add an accent wall in your favorite color or pattern and create a jewel-box space.

39. Go bold with design

If an accent wall isn't enough of a daring move for you, make bold design choices throughout the entire bathroom. Get creative with colors, patterns, and fixtures, and watch how it detracts from the size of the space.

40. Go wild with tile

Smaller square footage means you can have high-quality accents, such as tile, on a budget. Take advantage of that and opt for a design you really want that you may otherwise have been unable to afford.

41. Go tall with tile

Just like horizontal lines create the illusion of a wider bathroom, floor-to-ceiling tiles heighten the space — especially when done in a monochromatic color palette.

42. Darken the palette

While it contradicts the notion that light colors are best for enlarging the feel of a space, don't completely write off a dark palette. By darkening a small bathroom, you can create depth, and give a different (yet still effective) type of an illusion.

43. Paint with high gloss

A high-gloss paint, no matter the color choice, reflects light within a small space. As a bonus, it's moisture resistant and easier to clean than most other types of paint.

44. Hang the shower curtain as high as possible

By placing the rod and the curtain as close to the ceiling as possible, you create the illusion of the bathroom being much taller and more grandiose than it actually is.

45. Avoid blocking the windows

While privacy is a concern when it comes to any bathroom, allowing natural light to come in through the windows is also important. Don't worry, you don't need to worry about peeping Toms. Simply use film or light, sheer curtains that allow the light to flow in while keeping prying eyes out.

46. Decorate with greenery

Plants add life no matter where they're placed. Use a small bathroom to show off your green thumb and give it an airy look and feel.

47. Introduce a gallery wall

Whether it's family photos or beloved artwork, you can turn a wall of your small bathroom into a mini gallery. This personalizes the space and gives the eye something to focus on other than the size of the space.

48. Utilize a tray

Corral your everyday items onto a small tray to keep things looking tidy in a tiny bathroom. It also lends a layer of elegance to the space.

49. Put up hooks

Make the most out of the vertical space in a small bathroom by hanging hooks for towels and robes. Whether they're on the wall or the back of the door, hooks keep things off of the floor.

50. Declutter daily

Keeping a small bathroom as clutter free as possible will go a long way in maximizing the size of it. Store a hamper for dirty clothes or towels and get in the habit of putting things away as soon as you're done using them.

Small bathroom ideas triptych

The best small bathroom ideas combine charm and practicality. These small bathrooms are designed to make a compact space feel not just bigger and well-functioning, but super-stylish too.

When it comes to small bathroom design, clever planning – which includes everything from layout, to fitting choices, to smart storage options – is key to ensuring that even a tiny bathroom can still feel spacious. Stylish finishes that are also practical are the icing on the cake.

Up to recently, small bathrooms always required a compromise – often with the bathtub becoming the first victim in the battle for space – not to mention issues arising from lack of storage.

But the latest modern furniture and fittings can still create a luxurious bathroom from the minimal square footage. Shower baths remain a popular option in compact rooms, mini bathtubs are growing in popularity and the choices in scaled-down fixtures are greater than ever – there is a plethora of bathroom ideas for tiny bathrooms and narrow bathrooms to choose from.

Best small bathroom ideas

Whether you opt for a sleek streamlined look, or traditional detailing, there are plenty of ways to pack a decorative punch with your small bathroom ideas.

1. Add clever storage to a small bathroom

‘When it comes to adding small bathroom storage ideas think high-level rather than bulky floor-standing vanity units,' says Irene Gunter, founder, and creative director, Gunter & Co .

'I always go the extra mile to keep the floor as clean and empty as possible, with wall-mounted loos, vanities, and low-level accessories such as toilet brushes or bins. This means thinking cleverly about storage and making the most of any niches, mirror storage units, and shelves.'

2. Make the most of architectural details

Small bathroom with arched door frame and white metro tiles

Arched partition walls are making a comeback and proving a popular way to incorporate on-trend curves, without sacrificing too much space. Here, the arch has been clad in simple white bathroom tiles to accentuate the contour.

‘We added an arched niche to bring charm and a sense of history to this new bathroom,’ explains interior designer Heidi Caillier . ‘Inside, we placed a traditional clawfoot tub with a dark painted exterior, which feels unexpected in a new home, and the arch brings in more character and depth. The once plain space now feels as if it tells a story.

3. Use paint to enliven a tiny space

Small bathroom with pink painted wall paneling

Painting fitted furniture in a bathroom is a good opportunity to introduce stronger colors complemented with neutral walls or vice versa.

'Painted bathroom paneling is still very popular and we love combining our beautiful stronger colors Malahide or Invisible Green with exquisite wallpapers,' says Edward Bulmer, interior designer and founder, Edward Bulmer Natural Paint . 'Painting an old bath is another good way to inject some color and our paints are perfect for traditional cast-iron baths: colors such as our earthy browns Brick or Etruscan Brown are favorites.’

4. Introduce playful pattern

small powder room with decorative tiles

Small bathrooms are rife for decorative opportunity, so do consider introducing playful additions that will add an element of surprise and unexpected intrigue.

‘Of course, bathrooms are practical and functional spaces but they don’t need to be utilitarian,' says Mike Fisher, creative director and founder, Studio Indigo . 'Be adventurous and give the space personality. A bold scheme will provide a conversation piece with guests and friends, particularly in a powder room . Pattern can be introduced through wallpaper, fabric, or tiles. Complement your patterns with good light – in a powder room it can be atmospheric but in bathrooms, you need light and plenty of it.’

Here the border tiles in this Studio Indigo space bring attention to the bathroom's height, and it is a great way to make a small bathroom look bigger .

5. Invest in sufficient lighting

Bathroom living ideas over mirror and basin

‘Within a shower design for a small bathroom it is crucial not to underestimate the importance of good bathroom lighting ideas ,' says Mary Graham and Nicole Salvesen, founders, Salvesen Graham . 'This should always include decorative wall lights either side of a mirror to provide a softer, more flattering light for the face as well as a decorative feature.’

Lighting is more than just functional; in bathroom Feng Shui , lighting ideas for small bathrooms are an integral design element that should be planned at the start of a project, if possible. The best bathroom lighting is an instant energy booster and can make you feel refreshed in the morning and relaxed in the evening.

6. Delineate an alcove

Small bathroom with green mosaic tiled shower

‘We often find using mosaics within an alcove helps to optimize smaller shower spaces and a gloss finish adds to this illusion of grander proportions, reflecting natural light throughout the room,' says James Thurstan Waterworth, founder, Thurstan . 'I recommend pairing two distinct mosaic designs within the space, thus creating a point of interest where these verticals meet and then setting them against a cool neutral paint color that works to open up the small bathroom.’

7. Keep a small bathroom free from clutter

Organizing a small bathroom demands a thoughtful approach, and it is one you should consider abiding by if you want your small bathroom to look neat, tidy and beautiful every day. See our bathroom shelf ideas for more inspiration.

'My bathroom is my sanctuary,' says Eva Sonaike, creative director, Eva Sonaike . 'I like the space clean and uncluttered, so storage solutions are an essential part of a good design here. If possible, opt for integrated storage so that the energy can flow freely. When designing a bathroom from scratch, consider all possible options. In my bathroom, a full-height mirrored cabinet spans an entire wall, providing ample hidden storage for all my beauty essentials.'

8. Use a colored bath as a focal point

Bath ideas with pink bathtub

When space is tight, the key is to distract the eye, and this can be done by choosing a stunning bath in a color other than white. The vertical ribbed design seen here also helps visually.

Barrie Cutchie, Design Director at BC Designs , says: ‘Bathroom design is all about color and a great way to slowly introduce it is through subtle pastel shades. A bath in a traditional-style design will add personality to your bathroom and a pastel shade will liven it up.

‘Color also draws your eyes in and helps to create a striking focal point. The key to making a freestanding bath a success, no matter the size, is to allow 10cm between the edge and the walls. It creates a feeling of space and also makes cleaning it much easier.’

9. Make space for a niche

An example of small bathroom ideas showing a bath with a shower niche

Tired of chasing slippery shampoo and body wash bottles around the shower floor? When designing a bathroom , consider including a shower niche into your design – ideal for both showers and baths. It’s one of the best small bathroom storage ideas for saving space and it looks stylish.

‘Avoid a floor of toiletries or an overcrowded caddy by installing a recessed shower shelf,’ advises Jenna Choate, founder of London-based design studio, Interior Fox .

‘It’s a practical and streamlined way to add storage space, without taking away elbow room. Make a feature out of the area by using a colored trim that contrasts against the wall tiles.’

10. Match wall and floor tiles

A small bathroom with large marble tiles on the floor and walls

An all-encompassing look makes for an uber-stylish bathroom, and one that most definitely creates the feel of a luxury spa design. It also creates the illusion of space as seen in the ensuite bathroom above.

‘Using the same tiles on the walls and the floor will enhance the feeling of space by creating a continuous look,’ explains Jo Oliver, Director at The Stone & Ceramic Warehouse .

‘Pale colored tiles can make a small bathroom look bigger as they reflect more light than darker colors, giving an airy and spacious feel.

'We’ve seen a huge increase in the popularity of slab or ‘large format’ porcelain tiles in recent years. These large-format designs mean fewer grout lines, and therefore less maintenance and cleaning. Slab tiles are ideal for creating a striking, high-end look, and can often make smaller rooms appear larger thanks to their seamless appearance.’

11. Paint walls and woodwork in the same shade

A suede coloured bath on a wooden floor in front of small windows

Paint is such a wonderful design tool, and you can use it in this instance to make a small bathroom feel larger.

When you paint the woodwork white, for example, it visually splits up the wall – from the skirting, window frames and any edging above like picture rails. By painting the whole area in one color you create a seamless feel that the eye can flow around without interruption.

Painting a bath in a color also distracts and if you're looking for small bathroom flooring ideas , wide planked floorboards will make a floor space appear larger. It’s all about creating visual illusions.

12. Find space in the eaves

A crittall-style shower screen in a small bathroom with a skylight and pale scheme

Embrace small and suddenly there's so much more scope for adding a compact bathroom. This neat little attic space has been planned into a loft conversion but it feels far from wedged in.

A stunning Crittall-style shower screen adds drama, while a skylight and pale scheme ensure this is a light, bright room. Finishes are crucial in a small space, so it pays here more than anywhere to go for bespoke fittings and high-spec tiles and brassware.

13. Create room for manoeuvre with pocket doors

An example of how small bathroom ideas can be merged with a laundry room

Where space is at a premium, pocket doors really are your friend. Here they have been used to divide an already small space to combine a bathroom with clever and compact laundry room ideas .

Being able to close the door on piles of washing is a must if you're planning a relaxing soak in the bath. However, because the doors slide into the wall cavity, there's much more room for manoeuvre should you need it.

14. Embrace deep colors in a small bathroom

A walk-in shower with deep blue starburst tiles and brass fittings

You rarely hear a small bathroom being described as cozy. Yet use the right bathroom color ideas and materials, and a warm, cocooning look can be achieved – creating a space you'll long to return to at the beginning or end of the day.

Here, every designer's favorite shower tile idea – the Lily Pad tile – has been used to maximalist effect. The jewel blue shade and brass and copper detailing give the space the opulence you might not previously have thought achievable in a small bathroom.

15. Make the most of a small bathroom layout

Hexagonal tiled flooring and splashback in a small bathroom

When it comes to designing a small bathroom, every inch counts. It is important to measure precisely and take into account doors, windows or sloped ceilings that may dictate your bathroom layout ideas .

Don’t be afraid to play with pattern, even in awkward spaces. In this dark bathroom from Pippa Paton , the hexagonal tiled flooring and splashback give a cohesive look, creating a backdrop for this rustic vanity that not only fits perfectly into the alcove but also gives a subtle nod to the house’s barn heritage.

Make sure to check your local building codes, however, to make sure your layout doesn't violate local laws. Small things such as how much space to leave between a toilet and a shower can land you in hot water if done incorrectly.

16. Make a small bathroom a wet room

A wet room Idea for small bathrooms with a frameless screen and smooth grey walls

While it may be a more expensive option than a conventional shower, considering wet room ideas for your space could be worthwhile.

The main cost is tanking to make the area waterproof, but the result is a roomier space as you don’t need a closed-off shower enclosure.

Instead, take note from this design by Katie McCrum which shows that you can have the same flooring throughout and a frameless shower screen
to contain splashes without feeling too restrictive.

17. Decorate a small bathroom with wallpaper

A bathroom with green panelling and monochrome patterned classic wallpaper

One easy way of injecting character into a country-style bathroom is with patterned wallpaper, like this design from F&P Interiors .

While it may not be the first choice, standard wallpaper can be applied as long as the room is well-ventilated with an extractor fan, so steam doesn’t damage it.

Apply a strong adhesive underneath, and add a coat of decorator’s varnish on top to help protect against moisture. Or, use vinyl wallpaper designed especially for bathrooms, though it’s best to stick to tiles or panelling in wet zones such as around the bath or above a sink.

18. Use the right paint shade

A large white bath in front of a window and light blue panelled wall

Many people use lighter, whiter shades in small bathrooms, hoping to open up the space. Although this approach works, it is also important to get the tone of paint right.

As a rule, cool undertones suit south-facing aspects while warmer shades work well in north-facing rooms – in both instances the shades help balance natural light entering the space. Results vary, so always test the bathroom paint ideas you are considering first to see how they look when applied to certain walls.

Here, the paint color - Salix 99 from Little Greene - flows seamlessly from walls to the eaves for an elegant finish.

19. Add a little luxury

An ideas for a small bathroom showing a white panelled wall with soft pink paint, white furniture and brushed gold fittings

‘If there is one room that needs a little luxury, it’s your bathroom,’ says Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms .

She recommends using wall-mounted furniture to keep floor space clear in a small bathroom and sticking to a neutral palette if you want an elegant spa-like finish.

‘This helps avoid breaking up the room with different colors, which will make it feel boxy,’ she explains. And don’t be shy of adding a little glamor to your spa bathroom ideas – it’s these brushed gold fittings that really make this bathroom shine.

For instance, a bath caddy can help create a polished look if you have a bathtub. To house candles, bubble bath, and more. Otherwise, when it comes to your fluffy towels, a freestanding towel rack or rail will add sophistication to this room.

20. Choose quality finishes

Bespoke map wallpaper in a bathroom with smart grey panelling

A plus side of designing a small bathroom is that you may be able to splash out on higher-quality materials and finishes than if you were having to decorate a larger room.

In this project from Wolf Lewitt ,  a bespoke map wallpaper was commissioned to fit the room and add interest. The unusual design has been paired with smart grey panelling, which helps to box in any unsightly pipework while also creating a handy shelf around the walls. Authentic encaustic tiles on the floor complete the look.

21. Create zones, even in a small bathroom

Small bathroom ideas showing a brushed brass shower over a freestanding bath

It might be worth reconfiguring a family bathroom into zones – such as the shower and bath on one side, with the basin and toilet on the other – so that someone could pop in and brush their teeth while you’re doing bath time with the kids, for example.

‘Choosing to have a wet room can actually be hugely beneficial when wanting a bath to sit in the same space,’ says Sally Cutchie, marketing manager at BC Designs . ‘If you opt for a painted bath, use exterior eggshell paint as this is extra durable around water,’ she adds.

Different flooring can also be used to create zones – our bathroom floor tile ideas include tips for picking complementary designs.

22. Make a statement

Statement wallpaper in a cloakroom

A powder room is usually one of the smallest rooms in your house but it’s the one most of your guests will end up seeing. This can be an ideal opportunity to experiment with color and pattern and impress visitors with your flair for design.

Keep fixtures and fittings to a minimum, opting for a corner or reduced-depth basin, a monobloc mixer faucet and a simple towel holder. Then focus your efforts into adding impact through your powder room wall decor with a beautiful, bold wallpaper pattern or a few pieces of statement artwork.

23. Use optical illusions

Ideas for small bathrooms showing how to create optical illusions with tiles

When choosing small bathroom tile ideas , use optical illusion to create a sense of space in your washroom. For example, horizontal lines can help widen the appearance of your room and these metro tiles are a timeless option.

To prevent tiles looking too bare or clinical, incorporate natural materials to add layers of texture and warmth to the space, such as real wood or plants. The gray bathroom tiles on the floor help pull together the scheme by bringing out the dark grouting on the walls.

24. Build in storage to use space wisely

A small bathroom with built in storage and patterned wallpaper

Good bathroom storage ideas can go a long way to making a small bathroom feel less cluttered and crammed in.

It may seem counterintuitive to put more things in to a small room. But shutting lotions, potions, loo rolls and even towels inside slim built-in cabinetry will streamline the space. To help your furniture blend in, panel the walls to the same height all around the room.

25. Wall mount to make a small bathroom feel larger

A wall-mounted basin against grey metro tiles

Conversely, if you don't have a lot of bathroom clutter to hide, try to keep furniture and sanitaryware to a minimum. Wall-mounted basins and WCs clear the floor area and have minimal impact on your walls, so they will make a small bathroom seem bigger. They're also much easier to keep clean.

Be inventive about where you place your sanitaryware, too. This basin fits perfectly in the gap between wall and window and because it's in a corner, it's less intrusive.

26. Use mirrors to make a small bathroom feel larger

A shower enclosure with antique mirrored walls

Antique mirrored walls can be an effective way to create the illusion of a much wider space.

Also, if the passage between a master bedroom and its adjacent small bathroom is wide enough, consider adding a shower enclosure.

‘Ensure it sits seamlessly in the background by using clear glass – possibly with a modesty panel – and a flush-to-floor tray,’ says Kirsten Wain of West One Bathrooms.

27. Make the most of an odd-shaped small bathroom

A walk-in shower in a small bathroom with sandblasted glass panelling

Awkward ceiling shapes in loft conversions can be cleverly turned into stylish walk-in shower ideas with fixtures such as shower heads built into sloping walls.

In this scheme, sandblasted glass panelling neatly partitions the bathroom from the sleeping area.

28. Simple solutions are more streamlined

A small wet room with monochrome tiles

‘Architecturally and visually, it is best to keep a small bathroom feeling open by not crowding too many things into it,' explains Barbara Sallick, Co-founder, Waterworks . 'Edit your amenities often, hang your towels on bars or hooks, keep pattern to a minimum, and generally, make it simple.

'The room will feel bigger if you use a pedestal sink rather than a bulky vanity, a clear glass door rather than shower curtain and reflective surfaces such as glossy ceramic tiles in a large scale,’ adds Barbara.

This wet room idea is the perfect example of keeping things streamlined.

29. Pick a bathtub that is made to fit

Ideas for small bathrooms by The Albion Bath Company showing a tiny slipper tub in brass

By The Albion Bath Company

A small bathroom can cater to a tub – and a good-looking bathtub that is center stage-worthy - provided you pick a design that has been created specifically for the space.

There are plenty of reduced-width models to choose from. Thanks to its clean lines and simple design, this tiny slipper tub from The Albion Bath Company is equally beautiful in a period home as it is in a contemporary-style space.

Its Tubby design, meanwhile, comes in a 59inch/1500mm size while still boasting a double-ended roll-top look.

Also look out for built-in models that are attached to the wall but have the appearance of a freestanding bath from the front.

30. Choose minimal fixtures to boost a small bathroom

A frameless glass shower screen in a wet room

In a small space, it's important to avoid closing it off too much with excessive furniture. Opt for frameless glass when choosing a shower screen in a wet room to ensure the space remains light, bright and uncluttered.

31. Hang a mirror to make your bathroom feel larger

Ideas for small bathrooms: Broch. Bathroom with marble-effect tiles halfway up the wall, a round mirror framed either side with bare bulb pendant lights, and a wood-effect flooring

Decorating with mirrors is essential in any cloakroom, both practically and aesthetically. They bounce natural light around a room, making the room seem instantly larger and brighter.

Ornate options look fantastic in guest cloakrooms and are great statement pieces. If you prefer to keep things simple, then a mirror with a bevelled edge is an effective but subtle detail.

32. Light a small bathroom to make it feel bigger and brighter

A bathroom with a large mirrored wall behind a double vanity

Bathroom lighting zones are a key consideration, as getting the lighting right can make all the difference to the ambience created in your bathroom. Try installing a dimmer switch so that you can control the intensity of light, depending on your mood.

For bathroom ceiling lighting ideas , spotlights, either recessed, fitted to a track, or as part of a multi-light fitting, will instantly brighten a room.

33. Be adventurous with small bathroom decor

A small bathroom or cloakroom need not be dull or boring. Small spaces can be elevated with bold decorating choices, like this compelling pictorial terrarium wallpaper idea , used with moody moss-green tongue-and-groove panelling.

34. Pick a cohesive style that suits your home's period

Many people shy away from classic styles as they assume that they can crowd a room and can be too oppressive, but this isn’t the case.

By using light colors and tones and embracing traditional fittings such as an Art Deco style, you can achieve a period look in your bathroom despite its small size.

35. Keep floors clear

Wall-mounted modular furniture in a small bathroom

Carolyn Barber

Wall-mounted modular furniture remains a favorite for storage, due to its fuss-free, streamlined look. Available in a range of heights, widths and depths, semi-bespoke small bathroom storage ideas allow you to create storage that best suits your space.

You’ll find a wide range of colors, from soft hues to strong brave tones, available too, as well as plenty of different textures.

36. Keep the decor simple but add elegant fixtures

A small bathroom with brushed brass details

In lieu of being able to enlarge room dimensions, the clever use of surface finishes can maximize the feeling of space. In a small dark space, you could keep the space light and bright with minimal pattern or color.

‘Use reflective finishes on joinery and recessed handles,’ says Nick Stuttard, co-founder of London Projects . ‘They reflect light back into the room and streamline surfaces, minimizing any awkwardness in moving around a narrow space.’

37. Be brave with bold pattern

A pink bathroom with mural-style design tiles

While wallpaper is an excellent option for adding pattern to a cloakroom, depending on the level of extraction you have in your bathroom, it may not be the best choice if you use to it to bathe or shower often.

An excellent alternative to wallpaper is patterned tile, whether in a simple repeat or a mural-style design like this one by Surface View .

38. Invest in a vintage washbasin

A vintage washbasin in a small bathroom

Worried your bathroom design may look to contemporary and cold? Mix the old with the new for a relaxed, organic look. A vintage wash basin or compact vanity unit will offset the modern fixtures that are often necessary for a scaled-down scheme, giving the room a more lived-in look.

39. Choose luxe surfaces and accessories

A small bathroom with a walk-in shower, decorative lighting and a beautiful mirror

'Cleverly chosen surfaces can completely transform the look and help you make the most of even the smallest space,' says Leila Roberts from Fired Earth .

Luxurious, tactile finishes such as polished marble, make a space space feel a lot less utilitarian. The addition of accessories like decorative lighting and a beautiful mirror, also ramp up the feeling of luxury.

'Using large-format tiles means there are fewer grout joints, making walls and floors easier to clean, too,' Leila adds.

40. Pick a washbasin that's a decorative focus

The London Basin Company Scalloped Lorelei

Like a more traditional look? Demonstrating the perfect balance between classic design and contemporary color palettes, the vibrant blue hues of the Georgiana and Lorelei countertop washbasins will sit beautifully against any backdrop.

Whether you pick watercolour teals or contrasting, marble-effect dusty pinks, these bathroom vanity ideas will steal the limelight in a small bathroom – distracting from the rooms diminutive proportions.

41. Create a focus – with pattern

A walk-in shower with a patterned tiled wall

A small bathroom always runs the risk of being characterless but you can easily rectify this with a single wall of patterned tiles, placed strategically to draw attention to an end wall or a feature wall.

'Whether it’s stars or stripes, monochrome patterns or colors that pop... pattern and print play a big part in bringing personality into any home – it injects life into small spaces,' says Hamish Smith, Ca’ Pietra Creative Director. 'Think that pattern tiles are just for contemporary spaces? Think again and opt for a Victorian-inspired patterned tile, or a trellis pattern for a shower space to make it timeless.'

42. Draw the eye up

A small bathroom with marble flooring and a pink bath with a vertical ribbed design

A saving grace of some small bathrooms is that, while they're not big on floor space, they can make up for it with ceiling height. If that's the case, add features that encourage you to look up and take in the roominess above.

The trick employed here is to simply hang a bathroom chandelier – being sure to check IP ratings.

43. Squeeze in shelving to boost storage in a small bathroom

A large mirror and alcove shelving in a small bathroom

It doesn't matter how small your bathroom is. If you look carefully there are opportunities for space-saving storage everywhere. Take this little alcove of shelving in an attic bathroom.

Don't overload your shelves, however. Instead curate little vignettes and use house plants or ceramics to add pops of color.

44. Hang artwork wisely to distract from small bathroom proportions

Wallpaper is one way to bring a small bathroom to life, and carefully positioned artwork is another. Here, the owner has used clever bathroom art ideas by hanging each canvas high, emphasising the clear wall space rather than the room's size.

45. Clash patterns

One way to detract from a room's scale is to give it energy and vibrancy through clashing patterns. A cloakroom like this is the perfect place to experiment.

Featuring Grecian inspired ogee wallpaper, warm brass accents and and a richly decorated basin by London Basin Company , it makes a big statement.

46. Shock with pink

Pink shower room with plaster effect walls and Brass fittings

There's something both moreish and Moorish about this delicious pink shower room, which demonstrates how going bold in a small space can pay off. The brass shower and taps from Perrin & Rowe will develop their own unique patina over time, enhancing the vintage bathroom vibe that's already been created with polished plaster walls.

47. Clad a wall or two with texture

Ideas for small bathrooms with vanity and fluted cladding

For those who fear color may overwhelm their small bathroom, introducing texture may be a more palatable way to introduce feature walls. Cladding is a good way to achieve this – you could pick roughly hewn timber cladding or, for something more modern, a fluted finish.

According to George Holland at Victorian Plumbing, 'Fluted cladding is a great choice for smaller bathrooms prone to lots of condensation. The fluted design helps eliminate wall moisture, especially when using water-resistant ribbed tiles.'

48. Reveal the floor to stretch space

Ideas for small bathrooms showing a compact, wall-hung toilet

'When planning a small bathroom, it is important to create a sense of openness even if your actual space is limited,' advises Yousef Mansuri, Head of Design at C.P. Hart. 'Revealing as much floor as possible gives the impression of a larger room, so consider wall-mounting your basins, WCs and radiators. This will also make cleaning hard-to-reach areas much easier.

'Corner cisterns for wall-hung toilets are a great option for tight bathrooms, as they take up much less space than regular ones. Paired with a compact, wall-hung toilet (50 to 45cm depth) they can really maximize the space.'

49. Boost light levels

A dark bathroom with a large round mirror

'Lighting zones are a key consideration in a cloakroom bathroom, as getting the lighting right can make all the difference to the ambience created,' continues Yousef Mansuri.

'I always recommend installing a dimmer switch, so that you can control the intensity of light depending on your mood. Mirrors are an essential part of any small space, both practically and aesthetically. They bounce natural light around a room, making the space seem instantly larger and brighter, while also providing a great statement piece.'

50. Clad a wall with mirrors to cheat a bigger bathroom

A small bathroom with an antique mirrored wall

An easy and effective fix – mirrors really help exaggerate space, so simply hanging a large mirror in a small bathroom will make it feel far larger.

Combining a mirror with a dark or dramatic color scheme will help too. Shape the space you want with different kinds of frames – frameless mirrors will feel luxurious while round ones will make a room feel softer.

Expert tip – if you can’t fit one big mirror in, put up smaller ones for a similar effect.

51. Use vertical space in a small bathroom

An example of bathroom storage ideas showing a fitted storage unit with a marble surface

Instead of the usual bulky towel racks and rails, look for longer, thinner versions, designed to go up the walls. Invest in ladder shelves, or open shelves. This will add a relaxed feel to the space and the bathroom won’t feel so boxy. Take advantage of dead space you wouldn’t usually fill and stretch out your furnishings to save space.

Expert tip – tall and sleek corner fitting cabinets are an ideal small bathroom idea.

52. Stretch space in a small bathroom with wall lighting

A soft pink bathroom with wall lighting

Lighting is often forgotten when it comes to bathroom design, and many people rely on the single ceiling bulb to do the job, but adding pools of light around the room – particularly with wall lights – is one of the easiest ways to make a small bathroom feel bigger.

Expert tip – a light around a mirror will make a room feel brighter and bigger still.

53. Go big with tiles

Ideas for small bathrooms showing matching floor and wall terrazzo tiles

Think a small bathroom would need smaller tiles? When it comes to tiny bathrooms, the bigger the tiles the better. Smaller tiles mean more grout lines, which will make the space feel tight and grid-like. Wider tiles will make a bathroom feel bigger, especially if you choose light colors. Go big with tiles to create a real illusion of space.

Expert tip – if you do want to include smaller, mosaic-style tiles limit them to an area that’s already small such as the shower or an alcove.

54. Hang a bold and daring wallpaper

Penny Morrison wallpaper at The Fabric Collective

'Bathrooms are somewhere you can indulge in strong pattern and color without upsetting the flow of your overall interior design,' says Ruth Mottershead, creative director, Little Greene. 'For a luxurious haven to unwind in, consider adding a textural element with the use of wallpaper. Our wallpapers can be used in well-ventilated bathrooms on walls that don’t come into direct contact with water.’

How do you design a small bathroom?

If you're pondering how to design a small bathroom, the truth is that every aspect needs to be carefully considered. But that doesn't mean you need to compromise on style.

Clever storage solutions can make all the difference, and thankfully there are now many compact options for bathrooms – from reduced-depth bathtubs and basins to slimline shower trays and frameless screens to enhance the illusion of space.

Also, bear in mind that wall-hung designs will optimise floorspace, and reflective surfaces can help bounce light around the room.

What is the best color for a small bathroom?

So, what's the best color for a small bathroom? The truth is that it depends on your own space.

First, take account of the natural daylight in your small bathroom: if it is poor or if the bathroom is north- or east-facing, you would be better choose a bathroom color that reflects light and has a touch of warmth to it.

If your bathroom is flooded with daylight thanks to a large window, there's no reason not to choose a dark color.

Consider how the bathroom color will look on all four walls – in a small space, it may be over-powering if it is dark or bold; or it may make the room feel entirely characterless if it is pale – and this is where you need to be clever with adding pattern and texture to complement that color.

What to avoid? A strong color and poor lighting, whether daylight or artificial light – the effect will be that the entire space with have a tinge of that shade, and when you look in your small bathroom mirror you might find your face reflects that shade – which is unflattering and not conducive to wellbeing.

Is it better to use small or large tiles in a small bathroom?

We asked the Ca' Pietra design team what their view was on using tiles in small bathrooms, and they offered some differing options.

'Some say that small mosaic tiles are the best way to go in a bijou bathroom whereas others advise to go for larger tiles to open the space up,' they explain.

'What it comes down to is whether or not you want to run with the coziness of the room, emphasizing its small proportions and celebrating its size. In which case, you can go for little tiles like our Yoga Penny or Brasserie mosaic tiles.'

'But, if you want to help a small bathroom appear larger, go for 30-60 cm plain-colored tiles on both your walls and floors and they’ll blur the boundaries so your floor space isn’t so defined.'

What are the trends for small bathrooms in 2022?

Bathroom trends have undergone a huge leap in design of late, and thanks to the effect the pandemic has had on everyone's homes – with bathrooms becoming our stay-at-home spas – this trend is set to continue right through 2023 and beyond.

Super practical, utilitarian, minimal designs have been replaced by softer lines, organic shapes and warmer colors being applied in small bathrooms, as well as large.

Modern technology too is being utilized to the max with ink-jet printing technology allowing manufacturers to produce all kinds of tiles, from wood and stone-effect tiles that look so similar to the real thing that it's hard to tell the difference, as well colorful and intricate patterns.

How To Make A Small Bathroom Look Bigger

So you have a small bathroom and of course, you want to make your small bathroom look bigger . Luckily there are some clever design ideas to make a tiny bathroom look bigger.

And you don’t always need a full bathroom renovation. There are some clever low-cost tips to make a bathroom look more spacious.

Use A Light Color Scheme

Light colors usually make a room feel bigger. However, I’m always a big advocate for using any color you want without thinking too much about ‘design rules’. After all, a room painted in colors you really love is always better than a room painted in colors you feel you ‘have to’ use.

Add Mirrors

Mirrors always make a room feel bigger, plus a mirror reflects light so especially if your bathroom is not only small but also dark a mirror is going to do wonders.

The interior designers at Studio McGee used two large mirrors and a light color scheme in this bathroom to make it look bigger and lighter.

Glass Shower Door

Ditch the shower curtain and add a glass shower door. A shower curtain will make the space smaller and stops the light from flooding into the room (depending of course on where your window is).

Walk In Shower

A shower door needs space to open up, with a walk-in shower you won’t have that problem. Just add a glass partition so you don’t soak the entire room.

The bathroom on the left is not just beautiful, but also low-cost. The black and white floor are vinyl peel and stick tiles from FloorPops! that you can buy at Walmart .

Floor To Ceiling Shower Curtain

Anything that reaches from floor to ceiling makes a room feel higher, whether it’s bookshelves, windows, or in the case of a bathroom your shower curtain or glass wall.

Sliding or Pocket Doors

I have a narrow hallway and opening a door uses up all the space, it’s simply inconvenient. If you have the option to make any structural changes you should think about adding a sliding door, this way you can also use the nook behind the door of your bathroom

Shower Niches

One thing that clutters up your bathroom is all those products. A shower niche will store all your shower products and you won’t need a separate storage solution for all your bottles.

A Bathroom Ledge

I love ledges, not just in a bathroom but also in a bedroom. They’re a great solution for small spaces. A wall-to-wall ledge looks clean and it adds a lot of storage to your small space.

Instead of a niche, you can also choose a ledge in a small bathroom. I think a ledge, as you can see above, feels more spacious. (design: Alexander & Co and photo: Felix Forest)

With a wall-to-wall ledge, you create a lot of storage. And it is less intrusive than shelves or furniture. (design: decus interiors & photo: Felix Forest)

Wall-Mounted Faucets

Wall-mounted faucets are a space saver plus it looks extremely stylish.

Multifunctional & Floating Furniture

This seems like a no-brainer but multifunctional furniture is always a must in small spaces. It pains me to see the space under the sink go to waste.

Get yourself a beautiful bathroom vanity that can store extra towels and products that you don’t always need. Buy some clear boxes to organize your drawers to keep them tidy (plus an organized drawer can hold more stuff than a cluttered drawer).

Floating furniture opens up the floor and will give a bathroom a more spacious feel.

This tiny colorful bathroom combines several tips from this blog post. The space above the toilet has been used to the max with the pink built-in cabinet and niche.

They installed a floating vanity with a place for the towels, a tower rack hanging underneath, and a large mirror reaching to the ceiling to make this tiny bathroom look more spacious.

In the mirror, you can also see the floor-to-ceiling cabinet on the other side of the bathroom. This tiny bathroom used all the small bathroom layout ideas in one.

Add A Skylight To A Small Bathroom

You have to bring as much (natural) light into your small bathroom as possible. Skylights are a great way to insert more natural light into your bathroom. It’s a great solution when you can’t add a normal window to your bathroom. But for privacy reasons, a skylight is often a good choice.

Go Vertical

One of the best tips in any small room is to think vertically. This vertical thinking can mean several things. For example, you can add storage in high places for things you don’t need often. But another smart way in making a bathroom look bigger is by adding vertical wall tiles.

Don’t be afraid of color. These pink bathroom with vertical wall tiles shows that.

Unclutter Your Bathroom

Adding many bath products or decor items clutter up a space. And therfor it will make a bathroom look smaller. Think a bit more like Marie Kondo; “does this bring me joy?” and remove all things you don’t really need. Less clutter means more space.

High Narrow or Undeep Cabinets

This is again a plea to use the height of the room. Instead of using a low, deep cabinet. You can add a narrow, not deep but high cabinet instead. This will clear up walking space in your small bathroom which you not only need but also make a bathroom look bigger.

vibrant-small-bathroom-narrow-storage-nordroom

This pink cabinet in a bathroom design by Zoe Feldman is a good example. And not only did she use a high, undeep cabinet. It is also a floating furniture piece which clears up even more space.

Use the Space Above the Toilet

The space above the toilet is often forgotten when you design a bathroom. But it is such a perfect space to add storage.

These shelves are beautiful and practical. But when you live in a rental apartment you might now be allowed to drill holes in the walls. You can buy many over toilet storage solutions, which you can just put on the floor.

Use the Corners Wisely

Step away from the regular measurements in a small bathroom and use the corners more cleverly.

Make room for what’s important in life

The daily cleaning checklist that can transform how you clean your spaces!

small bathroom tour

Our family of five shares one small space bathroom in our NYC apartment . We’re sharing a small space bathroom tour, and also including links to a few of our favorite bathroom organization products!

Our Small Space Bathroom

small bathroom tour

This angle shows our entire small space bathroom! The standing area is 5 feet wide by 2 feet long. We have a 20″ x 32″ white and grey bath rug and a small step stool in this space. Here’s another great bath mat option .

The left wall is the window, the right wall is the shower with a mini tub, and the back wall is the doorway. We store all toiletry items for all 5 of us in this area. We were able to maximize storage space in our small space bathroom by adding organization products that fit the space. Since we have a fixed amount of space in the bathroom, we use that space to guide how many toiletries we can store at any given time.

Storage Wall Shelf

small bathroom tour

We’ve been wanting to add some extra storage to our bathroom for a while, and the wall area over the toilet seemed to be the only location that could work. We didn’t want to use a traditional over-the-toilet storage shelf that has legs that go down to the floor. We use the floor areas on either side of the toilet to store a small trash can and a narrow rolling storage cart .

small bathroom tour

Our 4-tier storage wall shelf is used to hold our white hand towels and white washcloths , a natural weave basket with hair supplies, 3 glass apothecary jars for cotton circles, cotton balls, and q-tips, and an accent vanity organizer for nail care supplies. Our wall shelf is currently sold out online, but here is another option for a wall shelf from the same brand.

Bathroom Cabinet

small bathroom tour

This cabinet is where we store some of our most used daily items. Here’s a link to a blog I wrote about updating this bathroom cabinet . I added self-adhesive white wallpaper to the back of the cabinet, and then filled the shelves with various sizes of clear bins .

Under-the-Sink Storage

small bathroom tour

For years, we had random bins under the sink, but we finally took the time to measure and select stackable storage organizers with sliding drawers that fit the space. Due to the location of the pipes under our sink, we were able to fit 3 of the 8″ by 12″ by 6″ size organizers on the left side, and 4 of the 8″ x 12″ x 4″ size organizers on the right side.

Toilet Seat

small bathroom tour

When we were ready to start potty training with our oldest daughter, we researched several toddler-sized potty chairs, but quickly realized that we didn’t have any available space in the bathroom to store the potty seat or a removable potty training toilet ring.

We discovered the TinyHiney toilet seat , which converts an adult-sized toilet seat into a toddler-sized seat, using a special toilet lid that has a toddler seat magnetically stored inside. To make the toilet accessible to young children, you simply open the toilet lid and then pull down the smaller toddler ring. The toddler seat does not pull off, which means that it’s safe and secure for little ones. PLUS there’s nothing extra to store.

Towel Hooks

small bathroom tour

We hung a row of wall-mounted hooks on the wall between the shower and the doorway. This is where the girls hang their towels, while Emily and I have our bath towels (which we recently upgraded to this set of quick-dry towels ) hanging from a row of hooks at the top of the bathroom door . We also added a set of hooks/clips that we can hang from the towel bar or shower curtain rod, and they are great for drying washcloths, wet swimsuits, etc. The clips/hooks also easy to pack with us when we travel, and then we can dry items at the beach, camping, or in hotel bathrooms with limited drying hooks.

I hope you enjoyed our small space bathroom tour! Check out more blogs about our NYC apartment!

Hi, my name is Tyler Moore. My wife and I live with our three young daughters in a 700- square-foot apartment in New York City. I began my tidying journey when an early-30’s crisis invited me to reflect upon, challenge, and change my patterns of daily living. I quit my job as a school administrator, returned to teaching, and started Tidy Dad to help others tidy, simplify, and find joy in their lives. I firmly believe the tidying process can transform your life. I’d love for you to join me in exploring ways that tidying can make room for what’s important in life.

Non-negotiable rules for small bathrooms that designers insist you follow

Rules for small bathrooms will make them look and feel SO. MUCH. BETTER.

1. Stay organized

2. use containers for storage, 3. choose calming colors, 4. add a statement wall, 5. choose complementary textures, 6. trick the eye with mirrors, 7. eliminate harsh lighting, 8. choose glossy finishes, 9. decorate minimally, 10. pay attention to the energy, 11. pay attention to small details, 12. consider storage alternatives, what to shop.

Danielle Valente

Some rules are made to be broken, but not rules for small bathrooms. If you're unconvinced, just ask interior designers.

Yes, we're policing the situation, but it's for your benefit. A bathroom can only look nice and function well when certain things are in place. When you're working with minimal space, you have to be thoughtful in your approach, folks.

It is possible to achieve HGTV-level looks and functionality with these small bathroom ideas —promise.

12 Designer-backed rules for small bathrooms

Want the W.C. to look chic and stay functional? Here's where to start.

It's hard to execute a decor theme—or at the very least stay sane—when crowded rooms are overflowing with clutter. Learning how to organize a small bathroom is the first step to creating a calming environment. Start by concentrating on the vanity .

"Less is more," insists designer Chantelle Hartman Malarkey . "Only keep on your countertop what you use daily. Everything else can be stored away in cabinets and drawers."

Small bathroom must-haves , including over-the-toilet shelving or the increasingly popular utility cart, are convenient ways to keep your toiletries accessible yet orderly. Plus, you can easily find one that fits in with the room's aesthetic.

Even if you're utilizing vertical space or managed to fit all of your necessities underneath the vanity, you still have to keep those essentials tidy. When bottles and accessories look overwhelming, find a way to keep them out of sight.

"Separate and contain your bathroom categories so your shelves don’t become jumbled," says Laura Price, the founder and director at  The Home Organisation . "It’s easy for categories to merge in a small bathroom if they aren’t separated by containers, so investing in matching storage boxes is the best way to keep the space organized and stylish."

Plus, let's be honest: your shelves look a lot cuter with storage baskets than they do with tubes of toothpaste and bottles of moisturizer.

Laura Price

Laura Price is the founder and director at The Home Organisation. After a career in PR for national events and with three young children, she realized that creating organized spaces brought her moments of calm in a busy life. With a vision to help many others experience the benefits of living an organized life, The Home Organisation was born.

When it comes to the worst colors for a small bathroom , it's been proven that dark shades can make things feel cramped and a busy wallpaper pattern creates a hectic ambiance. Neutral tones not only make for a zen environment, but they're in line with the proper practices for small bathroom feng shui .

So, once you pick your shade of choice, make sure it aligns with your accessories and the bathroom's furnishings.

"Simplify with two to three complementary shades, it reduces visual clutter and adds sophistication," says design expert Artem Kropovinsky

Artem Kropovinsky

Artem Kropovinsky is an interior design expert and founder of Arsight, an award-winning interior design studio based in New York.

Small doesn't mean "plain." You can give yourself a little eye candy with a statement wall that uses a fun peel-and-stick wallpaper or a pop of color. This is a clever way to use the less-recommended hues and not make the feel of the bathroom entirely overwhelming.

Kropovinsky says playing with textures is a way to add sophistication to the room, but make sure whatever you're incorporating into the W.C. fits with each other. If you want a boho feel, you should have wood accents, a neutral color palette, greenery (of course) and anything that feels pure. While an ultra-sleek, modern, black, and sophisticated vanity might look nice, that won't necessarily fit the theme you're going for.

Yes, we'll admit, one of the biggest small bathroom feng shui mistakes is to go overboard with mirrors, as it can potentially flush away good energy, but it is a trick designers gravitate toward when they want to brighten a small bathroom .

"Play with perceptions. A large mirror or glossy tiles can reflect light, making the room appear larger," Kropovinsky adds.

"Since you will be getting ready in the bathroom it's important to invest in good lighting and utilize natural light when possible," notes Hartman Malarkey.

LED lightbulbs will make things seem less intense, and Kropovinsky notes that ambient lighting has a way of "subtly redefining the space." (Think under-cabinet or behind-mirror lighting.)

Even if you have to resort to peel-and-stick options, Warren Kinloch, bathroom interiors expert at Bathroom Deal , prefers to opt for a silky finish.

"My favorite tip is to choose glossy tiles," he says. "Having these on the walls can reflect light, making the room seem larger and brighter. You can also bring a trending color into this to add a stylish element, for example, choosing sage green tiles."

Warren Kinloch is the bathroom interiors expert at Bathroom Deal, a retailer that  aims to "supply the highest quality bathroom products at the very best price."

As much as we feel inclined to let our creativity show, a small bathroom can be stylish without being overdone. Plus, let's be honest, there isn't space to execute some of those grand ideas.

"Don't over-decorate here—especially with bins, shelves etc.," says designer Melony Huber, co-founder of  La Peony . "I know it may seem like you are making the most out of your space but it may end up looking overcrowded at the end."

And you know what happens when things feel overcrowded, don't you?

A bathroom should be calming, not the opposite, so it's important to be considerate of the energy that you bring to the room—especially according to feng shui experts.

"Treat your bathroom as a mini sanctuary that is your go-to place to recharge," says Laura Morris, feng shui expert and the co-founder of  Mindful Design Feng Shui School

Feng shui consultant,  Priya Sher says that in order to let the chi (energy) flow the way in which it is supposed to, all drainage must be working properly, otherwise it represents money depleting. And yes, moody shades and over-the-top wallpaper might look harsh, but in terms of feng shui, they also represent bad energy.

"Avoid a black, dark blue or red color scheme as black and dark blue are water colors and they may add to money leaking out," Sher notes. "Red is a fire color and crashes with the water element of the bathroom."

Hey, your shampoo and conditioner need to go somewhere , right? But that doesn't mean a bulky Garnier bottle needs to clash with the look of your shower, and bathroom as a whole. When you pay attention to smaller items and choose to decant shower products, find a fragrant reed diffuser , match your towels, etc., these tiny efforts effect the bigger picture, and will ultimately make your small bathroom look luxe .

Mainstays Solid 18-Piece Bath Towel Set, White

While yes, you might want to keep your towels as close to the shower as possible, that doesn't mean your linens have to be in the bathroom, especially if space is tight.

"Make sure that everything in the bathroom has a purpose and need," Hartman Malarkey adds. "Anything that doesn't most likely can be moved to another space in the house."

What to avoid in small bathroom: what are the red flags?

If you have a small bathroom, there are a few things you should avoid: the first would be an inadequate storage system, as it can make an already crowded space feel smaller. The next is a dark paint color, as it can make things seem cramped. You should also avoid too many decorations, harsh lighting, and messes.

What is bad bathroom etiquette?

According to feng shui experts, bad bathroom etiquette includes keeping the space unorganized and not cleaning up after yourself by closing the toilet seat and the door, as this can let bad energy circulate improperly.

Need a little extra help getting organized? These freestanding bathroom cabinets will do the trick.

1. Incorporate wall-hung furniture

‘Keep the furniture wall-hung to create a sense of space and give a sleek, ‘floating’ look,’ says interior designer, Deana Ashby.

‘Although hidden storage is practical, don’t be tempted to shut everything away. Instead use a combination of slim projection cabinets and shelving to provide plenty of storage but without enclosing the space.’

Wall-hung sanitaryware and furniture will leave the bathroom floor visible to create the impression of a large bathroom. Plus they make cleaning much easier.

<p> Avoid furniture with deep drawers or cupboards in a small bathroom. </p> <p> ‘At face value, a large under-basin cupboard may look like it offers heaps of storage –space, but often waste a lot of space if the shelves are too far apart because most cosmetics and toiletries are quite small,’ says Deana Ashby.                    </p> <p> ‘Narrow-depth drawers or more shelves – installed closer together will give maximum storage potential and make it easier to see – everything at a glance rather than rooting around in the back of the cupboard.’ </p>

2. Plan you bathroom storage according to size

Avoid furniture with deep drawers or cupboards in a small bathroom.

‘At face value, a large under-basin cupboard may look like it offers heaps of storage –space, but often waste a lot of space if the shelves are too far apart because most cosmetics and toiletries are quite small,’ says Deana Ashby.

‘Narrow-depth drawers or more shelves – installed closer together will give maximum storage potential and make it easier to see – everything at a glance rather than rooting around in the back of the cupboard.’

<p> Bespoke furniture is an ideal solution in any room, but particularly in a bathroom where space is usually at a premium. </p> <p> ‘In short, you will maximize storage by being able to manufacture furniture that makes the most of every niche, nook and cranny,’ explains Susan Cunningham.                    </p> <p> ‘This is particularly useful in a home where there is a “quirky” corner or slanted ceiling, which make off-the-peg furniture an impractical option,' adds Deana. 'You can also choose the finishes, internal features such as partitioned leather-lined drawers, handles and even the hinge design.                    </p> <p> 'Generally bespoke storage can be more expensive, and can involve lead times up to 12 weeks depending on the manufacturer’s order book. But you can save by selecting less expensive materials and keeping the design simple. For example, walnut is less expensive than macassar; Carrera White marble is less expensive than Statuarietto. There is usually a more affordable version if you know where to look.’ </p>

3. Create an entirely bespoke scheme

Bespoke furniture is an ideal solution in any room, but particularly in a bathroom where space is usually at a premium.

‘In short, you will maximize storage by being able to manufacture furniture that makes the most of every niche, nook and cranny,’ explains Susan Cunningham.

‘This is particularly useful in a home where there is a “quirky” corner or slanted ceiling, which make off-the-peg furniture an impractical option,' adds Deana. 'You can also choose the finishes, internal features such as partitioned leather-lined drawers, handles and even the hinge design.

<p> ‘I would recommend a third of the budget goes towards storage,’ advises interior designer, Monita Cheung.                    </p> <p> ‘If you invest well, furniture can easily become the main focal point. A key piece in every bathroom is a basin, therefore incorporating under-counter furniture is essential.’ </p> <p> ‘Large bathroom vanity units fitted underneath the basin with an additional internal drawer always helps to hide the daily clutter.                    </p> <p> 'There are many different bathroom vanities that will create ample storage. For example, a jumbo drawer base unit provides storage for large towels and tall bottles, while a sleek mirror cabinet can be used to hide the electric toothbrush/shaver, keeping surfaces clear.                    </p> <p> 'If there’s money left, a tall storage unit is always handy, especially if it can be semi-recessed into a stud wall to provide really deep storage but with a sleek exterior.’ </p>

4. Invest wisely when designing a small bathroom

‘I would recommend a third of the budget goes towards storage,’ advises interior designer, Monita Cheung.

‘If you invest well, furniture can easily become the main focal point. A key piece in every bathroom is a basin, therefore incorporating under-counter furniture is essential.’

‘Large bathroom vanity units fitted underneath the basin with an additional internal drawer always helps to hide the daily clutter.

The best thing is that it can be moved to wherever it is needed or pushed against a wall out of the way.

Many people shy away from classic styles as they assume that they can crowd a room and can be too oppressive, but this isn’t the case.

8. Go big in a small space...

Don’t shy away from making a big statement in a small bathroom. Striking furniture will make an impact and hard-working pieces that conceal storage or double up on function will maximize your home’s efficiency.

Natalia Miyar, design director at Helen Green, suggests a bold approach.

‘Proportion is so important. I like to use large-scale furniture as it makes a space seem bigger and more luxurious,’ she says. ‘The key is to choose carefully. Buy a few large, impactful pieces rather than cluttering a space with a lot of small items.’

Bespoke or standalone shelving is a simple way of creating storage, as well as acting as a room divider. Open bathroom shelves can also inject a sense of spaciousness in compact spaces.

Look for smaller than standard baths, swap a full-size basin for a compact cloakroom or powder room version, opt for a corner WC and a bathroom shower over the bath.                    </p> <p> Wall-hung fittings that expose more floor area will make the room seem bigger and will be easier to clean too.                    </p>

9. …but know when to downsize

Smart bathrooms can give the impression of more space. Look for smaller than standard baths, swap a full-size basin for a compact cloakroom or powder room version, opt for a corner WC and a bathroom shower over the bath.

Wall-hung fittings that expose more floor area will make the room seem bigger and will be easier to clean too.

<p> Family bathrooms need to store a lot of stuff, and there’s really no such thing as too much storage here.                    </p> <p> Shelves can look good if they are kept tidy, but to hide clutter, cabinets with doors are a better bet. </p> <p> And never underestimate the designers’ favorite bathroom storage tip: a light, bright decorating scheme and decent bathroom lighting never fail to enhance the sense of space. </p>

10. Balance the look

Family bathrooms need to store a lot of stuff, and there’s really no such thing as too much storage here.

Shelves can look good if they are kept tidy, but to hide clutter, cabinets with doors are a better bet.

And never underestimate the designers’ favorite bathroom storage tip: a light, bright decorating scheme and decent bathroom lighting never fail to enhance the sense of space.

<p> Plan ahead during the bathroom build, and create built-in wall recesses that are perfect for storing essential toiletries and displaying pretty trinkets. These recesses keep the room streamlined by eliminating the need for traditional bathroom shelves. </p>

11. Build in storage

Plan ahead during the bathroom build, and create built-in wall recesses that are perfect for storing essential toiletries and displaying pretty trinkets. These recesses keep the room streamlined by eliminating the need for traditional bathroom shelves.

<p> Move your storage demands beyond purely practical with stylish freestanding pieces that offer the opportunity to introduce personality and character.                    </p> <p> This simple industrial style unit – Neptune’s Carter Collection is similar – provides space to stash textiles and toiletries in considered displays. Be sure not to overfill. Giving decorative items room to breathe will draw attention to them in a way that would be lost in a cluttered arrangement. </p> <p> Shown here is Woodblock Mono wallpaper in Knightsbridge with bath in Marigold 209 from Little Greene.                     </p>
