The Smashing Pumpkins announce North American arena tour with Jane’s Addiction

The trek will take the alt-rock giants across the continent from early October through mid-November

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced an extensive arena tour of North America.

During the trek – which will criss-cross the continent from early October through mid-November – the band will be joined by another titan of '90s alt-rock, Jane's Addiction.

You can see the full itinerary for the Spirits on Fire tour – which will also feature Poppy and, on select dates, Meg Myers – below.

The Pumpkins will be promoting their most recent studio album, 2020's double-length, synth-pop-influenced Cyr .

The band are also reportedly hard at work on another project, though, a 33-song “rock opera” sequel to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina/The Machines Of God .

“It’s kind of a rock opera," Billy Corgan said of the in-the-works album in a YouTube video in October 2020. "We feel like in many ways this completes the circle on everything we started and weren’t able to finish at that time, so we’re very excited.”

Jane's Addiction, meanwhile, last embarked on a full-scale tour in 2016, and have performed live only sporadically since. Their last studio album was 2011's The Great Escape Artist .

The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction kicked off their Spirits On Fire tour yesterday (10/2/22) in Texas with some surprises, new material, and a stand-in guitarist.

Jane's Addiction found itself on this tour with an unusual lineup. Just days ago, founding Jane's guitarist Dave Navarro announced he would miss the North American tour due to struggles with long COVID .

The tattooed axe wielder first contracted coronavirus in December of last year and has been battling it ever since. The band has temporarily replaced him with Queens of the Stone Age / A Perfect Circle guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen.

"I am personally gutted as our original bass player has returned, Eric Avery," Navarro announced IG. "We wanted to bring you the original line up but that will have to wait until I am recovered." The LA legends fronted by Perry Farrell delivered a tight set of just 11 songs from their first three studio albums. Noticeably missing was "Just Because" and "Superhero" from their fourth album Strays . Perhaps one or both of those tunes will enter the mix as the tour rolls on.

smashing pumpkins jane's tour

The Pumpkins performed twice as many songs and included a Talking Heads cover that's been a staple to their set. They also gave a lot of love to their newest project, the forthcoming  ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts ( which we discussed last month).

The American Airlines Center show featured two live debuts off ATUM (pronounced autumn): "Harmageddon" and "Neophyte."

SP's set began with one of the first singles from ATUM, "Empires," establishing the band's commitment of using this tour as a way to support the 33-song triple album it will release next year.

But not everything was new music from Billy Corgan's troupe. Long time fans were treated to six tracks from  Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, including the hard-rocking "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Zero" as well as singalong favorites "1979" and "Tonight, Tonight," the latter of which Billy and guitarist James Iha performed acoustically.

The top of The Pumpkins' set was noteworthy. Opening with a new song is a great way to set the tone, and to follow it with a smash hit, as they did with "...Butterfly Wings" is a solid one-two punch.

But then they doled out one of their most popular tunes of all, "Today," which lesser bands would have saved for the encore. Not these Chicagoans.  To add a cherry on top, "Today" was followed by "We Only Come Out At Night," a Mellon Collie track the band only played 18 times in 1996, when the album dropped, and another 18 times in 2008 for their 20th Anniversary Tour. Hopefully that will stay in the epic set, time permitting.

Another tune that hadn't been heard live much recently was "I of the Mourning" from  MACHINA/The Machines of God , a song the group hasn't rocked since 2013. It fits the current theme as ATUM is the final piece of the trilogy of sorts of Mellon Collie and MACHINA. Jane's and the Pumpkins will be spending October and November touring together around the US and Canada, ending up at the Hollywood Bowl on 11/19/22. Tickets are available here .

Jane’s Addiction and Smashing Pumpkins live in New York City: ’90s legends stage a hit-filled fiery rock show

Madison Square Garden, October 19: The joint 'Spirits On Fire' arena tour proves rock's staying power in NYC

Smashing Pumpkins

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the rock show,” Billy Corgan , enigmatic frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins , declares to a buzzing New York City crowd towards the start of their set. Madison Square Garden screams in response as he looks out at the mass of enthusiastic fans in Pumpkins tees, balancing drinks and swaying with excitement as they watch the legendary rock band take on one of the world’s biggest stages.

To be fair, the Manhattan audience has had quite the warm-up for the NYC stop of their ‘Spirits On Fire’ tour. Suited in a silver sparkling blazer and flanked by scantily clad dancers, Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell heats up the crowd with a swift but sensational set, one he describes as “short and sweet like afternoon sex”.

  • READ MORE:  Perry Farrell on new music from Porno For Pyros and Jane’s Addiction, and the return of Eric Avery

The spicy statement seems fitting for a performance featuring sexy upside-down silhouettes on monkey bars and Farrell’s wife, Etty, spinning on a sex swing, but even with the heavy dose of adult content on stage, the guest-filled performance tips the scale towards rock and roll.

Jane's Addiction

Josh Klinghoffer, formerly of Red Hot Chili Peppers and touring musician for Pearl Jam, ups the grunge rock ante by joining the Jane’s during their spiralling track ‘Three Days’. Daniel Ash of Bauhaus also takes part in the action, performing ‘Jane’s Says’ and ‘Slice Of Life’ to gracious listeners.

At 63 years old, Farrell, who midway through the rapid set shifts to black leather fingerless fringe gloves, still shimmers in his rock and roll prowess, keeping the attention of the crowd between hit tracks and gratifying banter, all while taking multiple sips from a glass.

“New York City, just like I remembered it only different,” he jokes before telling the story of the last time the band, which recently reconvened with founding bassist Eric Avery, played the Garden. “Last time I was here I got in a fight with a girl I was with in the hotel room before the show,” he says. “That’s why I was late. I do apologise.”

The band closes to the tune of ‘Been Caught Stealing’, with the whole of the stadium singing along to every word.

  • READ MORE:  Smashing Pumpkins release new single ‘Beguiled’ and tell us about their three-part “rock opera”, ‘ATUM’

The Smashing Pumpkins open their set with their latest offering ‘ Empires ’ before leaning into fan favourites, ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’, ‘Zero’, and ‘Cherub Rock’. Lasers, mammoth screens, and a massive tilting brightly lit star illuminate the performance, but the most subdued moment, an acoustic version of ‘Tonight, Tonight’ steals and stills the show.

The band also shares a sinister cover of ‘Once in a Lifetime’, something they’ve done multiple times during their current tour, but the track goes off like a missile in Talking Heads ‘ hometown.

Smashing Pumpkins

Pumpkins also delight the crowd by playing their pounding new track, ‘Beguiled’, the lead single to their upcoming album ‘ATUM’ which arrives next year .  Although he’s draped in a black robe and dark face paint, Corgan’s demeanour on stage is anything but gloomy. The set is punctuated by multiple rounds of thanks and gratitude to onlookers. The band ends their set with another new track, ‘Harmageddon’ with fans singing along even though the song received its live debut less than a month ago.

The mid-week Madison Square Garden romp marks a triumphant night from two ‘90s bands whose ability to mix nostalgia-inducing tracks with fresh music, staying power, and driving sound has kept them and their fans going. The ‘Spirits On Fire’ tour stop in New York City proves there’s no such thing as a bygone era when it comes to a tried and true rock show.

Jane’s Addiction played:

‘Up the Beach’ ‘Whores’ ‘Ocean Size’ ‘Ain’t No Right’ ‘Three Days’ ‘Mountain Song’ ‘Jane Says’ ‘Slice of Life’ ‘Ted, Just Admit It…’ ‘Stop!’ ‘Been Caught Stealing’

Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction tour a double dose of rock that has endured for decades

Over three hours and 27 songs at the united center, it was hard not to recall the first time you heard ‘today’ or saw the ‘been caught stealing’ video..

merlin_109414425.jpg

Billy Corgan sings with Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday at the United Center, backed by the band’s original drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin.

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times, Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Everyone had a story Saturday night at the United Center. In the merch line, some were reminiscing about their first time seeing Smashing Pumpkins play the Metro in ’92. In the women’s bathroom, there was a mini high school reunion where old friends recalled wearing out their cassettes of Jane’s Addiction’s debut, “Nothing’s Shocking.”

Since it kicked off in early October, the Spirits on Fire Tour featuring the two ’90s mainstays has become a music fan’s scrapbook pasted together with decades of sentimental glue, perhaps to the chagrin of Billy Corgan, who has often vocalized his thoughts on dreaded nostalgia. But he tapped into his memory bank on this night, asking bandmate James Iha if he remembered the early “Gish” days, with Corgan then sharing he could recall “every moment” over the past three decades of the band.

As the Pumpkins and Jane’s combined three hours and 27 songs played on throughout the night, it was hard not to recall the first time you heard the former’s “Today” or first came across the latter’s wild video for “Been Caught Stealing.”

The pairing of the two bands for the first time on a bill together since 1988 feels like a birthright moment, an inimitable double dose of some of the most solid music and musicians that rock has birthed in the past 40 years, not the least of which were drummers Jimmy Chamberlin and Stephen Perkins, true stars of the show. It was hard to forget that on the other side of the country on this night, a handful of bands were being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and here on stage at United Center were two legacy acts just as worthy.

“It’s so great to be home,” Highland Parker Corgan said midway through the Pumpkins’ set, bowing to the crowd and thanking them for 34 years of support. (Saturday’s show also felt like a homecoming for Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell, who recently inked a new 10-year contract with the city.) Of course, the pinnacle moment in the Pumpkins’ set came during a pared-down, acoustic version of “Tonight, Tonight” featuring just him and Iha surrounded by a backdrop of twinkling stars on a wraparound video screen. It’s almost a given the Pumpkins will play the song in Chicago, as the giant echo of the proud crowd singing back the lyric “the city by the lake” is unique to our town.

The Pumpkins also had a few local guests, including photographer friend Dicky Shay (who once also worked on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”), who Corgan said saved the tour a few weeks back by flying in with forgotten passports, as well as Corgan’s two young children, who came out for a dance-along to new song “Beguiled.” But it was the guest appearance of local saxophonist Frank Catalano on “Silverf- - -” that was a prime moment, adding an alluring and dark jazzy layer on top of the explosive live song.

The 17 tracks were an excellent curation of the Pumpkins’ well-hewn discography, similar to the setlist from an intimate show at Chicago’s Metro in September as part of the venue’s 40th anniversary celebrations, where the Pumpkins got their feet wet so many years ago. Surprises on this night included “Eye,” their “Lost Highway” soundtrack contribution and a sublimely heavy cover of the Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime” that was drenched in the Pumpkins’ psych rock and metal influences. It was another great example of the band’s incredible guitar frontline made up of Corgan, Iha and Jeff Schroeder that remains pivotal to the band’s sonic identity. (There was still no D’arcy Wretzky to round out the band’s full original lineup, as Jack Bates continues his stint as the touring bassist while Katie Cole fills in on backup vocals.)

Before the Pumpkins, it was a relief to see Jane’s Addiction take their rightful place Saturday night after a few issues that have marred the tour. Notably, guitarist Dave Navarro has not been able to join due to issues with long-haul COVID, and more recently the band had to cancel a few stops due to an undisclosed injury suffered by Farrell.

Though they were in fine form on this night, with the talented Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age) doing justice as a fill-in for Navarro and original bassist Eric Avery rounding out the compatible-as-ever lineup. The band tore through 10 songs that showed the unmistakable range that has always bucked trends and made Jane’s un-categorically diverse.

“We can do it all,” Farrell said at one point, introducing a “folksy” stripped-back take on “Jane Says.” His penchant for jazz scat vocals on this night also added unusual flair on a few songs, as did his wild banter that took on everything from the price of wine to his thoughts on spanking. Mid-set stunner “Three Days” was the prize of the performance, slinky and dangerous in its approach, added to by the choreography of Farrell’s wife Etty Lau and her tribe of dancers. The song was also full of long-sweeping solos that showed off incredible musicianship, begging for rumors to be true the troupe is working on new music.

Smashing Pumpkins Debut Two New Songs at Triumphant Tour Kickoff: Review, Set List

No small feat following up Jane's Addiction 's  ferocious set  at Sunday night's Spirits on Fire Tour kickoff, but the Smashing Pumpkins rose to the occasion with a dynamic headlining performance that blended massive hits, old-school deep cuts and a sprinkling of brand-new, unreleased songs.

The Billy Corgan -fronted outfit opened its hour-and-50-minute set with "Empires," a recently released song from the upcoming three-part rock opera  ATUM . The 33-track set will serve as a sequel to the band's chart-topping 1995 double album  Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness , as well as 2000's  Machina/Machines of God .  Mellon Collie was the most-represented album in the Smashing Pumpkins' oeuvre on Sunday, accounting for six of the evening's 22 songs.

The group dished out the aggressive, anthemic "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Zero," treated the audience to an acoustic version of "Tonight, Tonight" and summoned the biggest singalong of the night with "1979." They ended the set with a brutal, knuckle-dragging rendition of "X.Y.U.," contrasting nicely with the delicate  Machina II cut "If There Is a God" that preceded it.

Other requisite hits and set-list mainstays —  Siamese Dream  smashes "Cherub Rock" and "Disarm,"  Adore 's "Ava Adore" — made their appearances, but overall, the Smashing Pumpkins' tour kickoff was hardly the warm, fuzzy nostalgia trip that some audience members had hoped it would be. Along with the darkly seductive  ATUM  track " Beguiled ," the band debuted two new songs from the upcoming album. The first, "Neophyte," was a melancholy, synth-inflected number whose " It ain't right " refrain was emphasized by the words broadcasted on the screen behind the band. The second, "Harmageddon," was a riff-heavy thrasher that bore a passing resemblance to the obliterative  Siamese Dream  track "Silverfuck," which also appeared late in the set.

Corgan and the band seemed most engaged when they indulged that heavy side, including a doomy, larynx-shredding rendition of Talking Heads ' "Once in a Lifetime" that became an early set highlight. They also excited hardcore fans by dusting off  Mellon Collie 's "We Only Come Out at Night" and  Machina 's "I of the Mourning," which they hadn't played since 2008 and 2013, respectively.

Not everybody was receptive to the curveballs, though: It was easy to telegraph when fans would take their seats or make a run for the bar and bathroom as the band broke into newer or lesser-known material. No arena act is immune to this kind of apathy, and the Smashing Pumpkins have never been afraid to defy audience expectations, even at the expense of their popularity. And besides, the newer songs still had their perks, like a gobsmacking drum solo from Jimmy Chamberlin in the middle of 2018's "Solara."

If the Smashing Pumpkins' tour kickoff eschewed the instant gratification of a pure greatest-hits set, it also offered a defiant, often virtuosic display of dynamics from a band that still feels like it has something to prove — and isn't that all we want from our rock stars anyway?

When The Smashing Pumpkins first emerged out of Chicago in 1988, the world had never heard a band quite like them. They spun together rock, pop, shoegaze, metal, goth, psychedelia and electronic into a kaleidoscope of saccharine melodies, fuzzy distortion, bombastic orchestration, incendiary fretwork, eloquent songcraft and unshakable hooks. Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic and wholly new—and it still is today. As a result, they’ve sold over 30 million albums worldwide and collected two GRAMMY ® Awards, two MTV VMAs and an American Music Award. Their catalog is highlighted by the platinum Gish [1991], the quadruple-platinum Siamese Dream [1993], diamond-certified Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness [1995], platinum Adore [1998] and gold Machina/The Machines of God [2000]. In 2018, they embarked on one of their most successful tours ever, the Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour , followed by SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN. Meanwhile, 2020 saw the release of the band’s eleventh full-length and latest double album, CYR . As prolific as ever, The Smashing Pumpkins confirmed they will release more music in 2022 as they resume touring. More details to come.

The Smashing Pumpkins

Swiss exclusivity

The arrival of the Smashing Pumpkins – one of the most ferocious, audacious and cult bands of the nineties  – is exceptional in more ways than one. Eleven years since their last concert in Switzerland, the Chicago band will be performing exclusively in Switzerland and at the Montreux Jazz Festival for the first time. Creators of truly generational anthems such as ‘Today’, ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’, ‘1979’, ‘Cherub Rock’ and ‘Tonight, Tonight’, Billy Corgan and his cohort not only helped forge the sound of the 1990s, they reinvented it several times over. The Smashing Pumpkins have always been an almost unnaturally disruptive force, refusing to be simply characterised as having the brute force of alternative rock or the expansiveness of progressive rock. With their sonic experimentation, grandiose orchestrations, epic solos and long concept albums, the Smashing Pumpkins have always thought big. Hosting Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin in the majestic setting of a stage on the lake seems like an appropriate welcome to Montreux.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design
  • Learn something new: Visit the Museum of High-Rise Architecture in Moscow or the Metro Museum

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.

What’s nearby?

Sechenov Botanical Gardens: The botanical gardens of the First Moscow State Medical University was created for students’ training and research in 1946. Today it is open for free visits, and is home to a large arboretum.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.

Montreux Jazz Festival 2024: Janelle Monáe, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, Duran Duran and Smashing Pumpkins Set for Fest's 58th Edition

T he Montreux Jazz Festival 2024 line-up has been confirmed, and this year's lineup features an eclectic mix of pop, alt-rock, classic rock, electronic music and, of course, jazz!

Across 16 days and two stages, the legendary musical celebration mixes favorites, rising stars and debutantes, including Raye , Sting, Janelle Monáe, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack , PJ Harvey, Diana Krall, Lenny Kravitz, André 3000 , the National, Air, Smashing Pumpkins , Duran Duran and Dionne Warwick.

This year's event from July 5–20 will introduce a new layout in the town, due to construction work on the Convention Centre which typically hosts the festival's main stages. According to the organizers, "attendees will enjoy the Lake Stage, a main stage constructed in a breathtaking setting on the surface of Lake Geneva with the backdrop of the Alps."

Montreux organizers also noted: "The festival also returns to the Casino, which is steeped in history, having burned down in the '70s and inspired Deep Purple’s 'Smoke on the Water.' The festival couldn’t miss the chance to invite the group back for their tenth performance at Montreux."

Collaborations and celebrations will be on display, as 10-time Grammy nominee Janelle Monáewill feature on the same night as Raye, who achieved a record-breaking win at the BRITs, taking home six awards . Electronic music devotees will see English trip-hop collective Massive Attack back after a five-year absence from the stage, while French duo Air will perform their album Moon Safari in its entirety to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

With a capacity of 1,300, the Casino offers a mix of jazz, afrobeats, pop, rap and special projects. On July 13, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets will focus on the band's founding years, from 1967 to 1972, including the Syd Barrett period and cult hits such as "Atom Heart Mother" and "Echoes." Grammy Hall of Famer and legendary singer Dionne Warwick will also grace the Casino stage, offering up hits from her six-decade career and sharing the night with Americana/country folk duo the War and Treaty. André 3000 will be appearing as an instrumentalist, performing material from his recently released flute album New Blue Sun.

As highlighted in the press release, the Montreux Jazz Festival has "a longstanding history of hosting the brightest talents before they explode into global icons. This year, it will host several bright and brilliant musicians in Victor Ray, Thee Sacred Souls, Jalen Ngonda, Henry Moodie and Lauren Spencer Smith."

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Duran Duran will be making their Montreux Jazz Festival debut on the final night July 20, along with Soft Cell's Marc Almond and David Ball.

Each day of the Festival will feature a new concept of 'Pop-up Concerts' and the new layout will showcase the festival's free offering along an extended route on the lakeside quays, with eleven stages of entertainment. The full program for those events will be announced in full on June 5.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

One of the world’s largest cities, Moscow is a true metropolis whose ancient neighbourhoods are interspersed with newly built high-rises, inhabited by people from all over the former Soviet Union.

It’s also the city of rings: the innermost is the Kremlin itself; further away are the former defensive rings, Boulevard Ring and Garden Ring; still further are the Third Ring Road and the MKAD, which delineates the city’s borders. There’s an ongoing joke that Moscow Mayor is the Lord of the Rings. Most sights are contained within the Garden Ring, although for some more authentic neighbourhoods one has to venture further out. To help you explore Moscow’s diversity, we picked our favourite ’hoods – but this list is by no means exhaustive.

Evening view of Moscow's Red Square from the Kremlin towards St Basil's Cathedral

The Red Square and around

It can be argued that Moscow, or even the whole of Russia, starts at the  Red Square  – it’s an absolute must-see for any visitor. After standing in line to check out Lenin’s granite  mausoleum , go to GUM , Moscow's oldest department store. Full of luxury shops, it’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov. Apart from architectural wonders, GUM has several places to eat including the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 where you can sample mysterious-sounding delicacies such as the ‘herring in a fur coat’.

On the opposite side of GUM, Kremlin ’s walls and towers rise above the Red Square. Walk through the Alexander Garden  and past the grotto to the Kremlin’s entrance. It’s a treasure trove for any art and history lover: ancient gold-domed churches, icons galore and the resting place of Moscow tsars.

On the other side of the Red Square is Moscow's symbol,  St Basil's Cathedral with its multi-colored domes. Right behind it is the newly built Zaryadye Park , which showcases flora from all over Russia; another attraction is the floating bridge jutting out above the embankment and the Moscow river. A glass pavilion nearby hosts Voskhod , a space-themed restaurant with dishes from all 15 former Soviet Union republics. It’s a perfect spot for a classy evening meal and there’s often live music.

People chilling out at a pond in central Moscow on a summer day

Patriarch’s Ponds

The Patriarch’s Ponds (aka Patriki) is a historical neighbourhood, celebrated in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita . Located right off Tverskaya street, Moscow’s main thoroughfare, Patriki recently became the city’s most happening quarter. It has some of the most elegant architecture, including several buildings by art-nouveau genius Fyodor Shekhtel. Narrow streets here have a cozy feel, with recently widened sidewalks and bike lanes. In the summer it becomes party central.

Start by checking out free exhibitions or one of the cutting-edge performances at the experimental theatre Praktika . But make no mistake, the neighbourhood’s main attraction are its bars and restaurants. Patriki’s residents are well-off Russians and expats, so it’s no wonder that  Moscow’s recent culinary revolution started here. Uilliam’s , one of the pioneers of this foodie movement, still rules over the scene with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Also try AQ Chicken  for everything chicken-related, Patara  for a taste of Georgian cuisine, and Cutfish for some great sushi. Finish your gastronomic tour with original cocktails at Pinch or the Moscow outpost of NYC restaurant Saxon+Parole .

Old red-brick buildings of the former Arma factory in Moscow

Around Kursky train station

For a long time, Kursky train station was surrounded by semi-abandoned factories and the area was best avoided. It all changed in the late 2000s, when a dilapidated wine factory was turned into Winzavod , a mecca for fans of contemporary art. Today these red-brick buildings are occupied by some of Moscow’s leading galleries. After taking in all the art, pop in the small wine bar Barrell  for a glass from burgeoning wineries of Russia’s south or grab a bite at Khitrye Lyudi  cafe.

Right next to Winzavod is Artplay , another refurbished factory full of design and furniture shops and large exhibition spaces.  It’s also home to  Pluton , one of the latest additions to Moscow’s dance scene. Other Pluton residents are the multimedia art gallery Proun  and another lunch option,  Shanhaika , with authentic Chinese cuisine.

A short walk away is Arma, where a cluster of circular gas holders has been turned into offices, restaurants and clubs including Gazgolder  (it belongs to one of Russia’s most famous rappers, Basta). Apart from hip-hop concerts, Gazgolder organises regular techno parties that sometimes go non-stop from Friday to Monday.

Colourful facade and onion-shaped domes of a Russian Orthodox church in Moscow

If you’re interested in religious architecture, Taganka is the place to go. First of all, see the old Moscow at Krutitskoye Podvorye – one of those places where nothing seems to have changed in centuries. The monastery was founded in the 13th century, but in the 16th century it became the home of Moscow metropolitans and most of the surviving buildings are from that epoch. Take a tour of the grounds, and don’t miss the interior and icons of the Assumption Cathedral.

Your next stop is the Rogozhskoe settlement of ‘old believers’, a branch that split from Russian Orthodoxy in the 17th century. The settlement is dominated by an 80m-tall bell tower. The yellow-coloured Intercession Church, built in neoclassical style with baroque elements, has an important collection of icons. Next to the church grounds is the popular Trapeznaya cafeteria, with Russian food cooked using traditional recipes – a perfect spot for lunch.

A short ride away is Andronikov Monastery, which today houses the Rublyov Museum  in the old monks’ quarters. There’s a great collection of ancient Orthodox icons although none by Andrei Rublyov, who was a monk here in the 15th century. The main attraction at the monastery is the small Saviour’s Cathedral, considered the oldest surviving church in Moscow.

Finish the day at the craft-beer cluster around Taganskaya metro station. Varka offers both Russian and imported labels, with the Burger Heroes stand serving arguably the best burgers in town. Craft & Draft looks more like a respectable old-fashioned pub, with decent food, 20 beers on tap and a hundred types of bottled brews.

Elaborate facade with statues and balcony on a mansion in Moscow

Khamovniki is Moscow’s ancient textile district, named after the word kham  (a type of cloth). Two main thoroughfares, Ostozhenka and Prechistenka, cut through the neighbourhood parallel to each other. The former turned into the so-called ‘Golden Mile’ of Moscow in the 1990s, with the highest real-estate prices and some of the best examples of new Russian architecture, while the latter is still mostly lined up with impressive 19th-century mansions.

Khamovniki is somewhat of a literary quarter, as several museums devoted to Russia’s best-known writers – among them  Leo Tolstoy , Alexander Pushkin  and Ivan Turgenev – popped up here during the last century. There’s also plenty to see for an art lover. The  Multimedia Art Museum regularly hosts exhibitions by some of the best photographers from all over the world, as well as contemporary art. Several galleries, including RuArts  and Kournikova Gallery , have also found home in Khamovniki.

When you’ve had your fill of literature and art, stop by Gorod Sad on Ostozhenka, an outpost of a local health-food chain, and order dishes such as pumpkin soup or grilled vegetables salads. Afterwards, head to Dom 12 , which is located just off Ostozhenka street. This restaurant and wine bar is frequented by the city’s intellectuals and its schedule includes lectures, book presentations and film screenings, while in the summer guests migrate to a lovely courtyard.
