How ‘star trek discovery’ furthers representation and diversity in season 5.

The series continues to boldly go where no one has gone before.

The Star Trek franchise has a long and powerful history of breaking boundaries and showcasing inclusive and diverse characters and storylines. This is the same franchise that featured TV’s first biracial kiss and wasn’t afraid to put women and people of colour into positions of power, after all. However, since its 2017 debut, Star Trek Discovery has been pushing those conversations even further.

Not only is Discovery the first Star Trek series to feature a Black woman as the series lead, but it is also the first to feature LGBTQ+ characters. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) have been romantically involved since the first episode, for example. And in Season 3 we met a trans character named Gray (Ian Alexander) and a nonbinary character named Adira (Blu del Barrio).

In a recent Q&A event with The Wrap , series stars Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala sat down alongside co-showrunner Michelle Paradise to chat about achieving some of these milestones, as well as to hint at what’s coming up in Season 5 (which debuts sometime in 2023). Read on to find out what we learned during that panel.

Each season the creatives want to improve on what has already been done

During the panel, Paradise specifically touched on how she and the other creatives wanted to build and expand upon what Gene Roddenberry first set out to do with Star Trek: The Original Series all those years ago. That began with the casting and continues to be a hot topic as they move forward with this story.

“It was very much part of the conversation, how can we have a wonderfully diverse cast right now and how can we continue to expand that,” she said. “We have it every episode, every season, where we’re always looking for ways to do that. It’s one of the things Star Trek is about and it’s one of the things that television can and should do,” she continued.

“It’s a powerful thing for people to be able to see themselves represented. It feels like a huge responsibility and a privilege that we take very seriously.”

The cast feels a responsibility to represent

Martin-Green feels just as passionately as Paradise in terms of the responsibility that comes with being on a historic show like Star Trek Discovery . She reveals she faced some resistance from viewers when she was first cast as Michael Burnham, but she welcomes the opportunity to spark conversations and change conventional ways of thinking.

“We take that responsibility very seriously,” she added. “I certainly came across a lot of resistance in the beginning, people that didn’t like that there was going to be a Black woman leading Trek for the first time. It’s kind of a contradiction—this is the series that introduced the first biracial kiss,” she continued.

“It’s kind of nonsensical but at the same time I love that if it allows you or encourages you to confront yourself or if it brings something to light within you. And let’s hope that you open up and that you change. I know stories of people whose beliefs and perspectives have changed because of Trek and because of Discovery . What an honour to be a part of that.”

The show’s representation inspires the cast as well

Ajala, who plays Cleveland Booker, reveals joining the series in its third season was inspiring as it delivered hope for the future in terms of representation and equality.

“One thing I really love about Star Trek and Starfleet specifically is you have a group of individuals who are different, whose differences are celebrated,” he said. “They're encouraged to be innovative, encouraged to be the best versions of themselves, and are given a safe platform to fail, try again, and then succeed,” he continued.

“So far as I have breath in my body, that's what I'm going to endeavour to always do. You can't change the world, but you can change someone's world. And as long as I'm doing that, I feel more than enough.”

Martin-Green added how that kind of a future is what matters most to her. “Being able to present the possibility and the details… of this sort of utopian future is enough because that visualisation, hopefully, prayerfully, will lead to actualization,” she added.

Looking forward, this show is all about hope

Potential actualization has always driven Star Trek stories, revealed Paradise. In her mind, sci-fi in general is an opportunity to reflect the things that are happening today and to present the world that could be tomorrow.

“That’s one of the wonderful things about this iteration and the other iterations of Star Trek ,” she said. “Looking at the optimism of what the world could be. Am I optimistic? I suppose that depends on the day and what’s happening in the world on that day. But I want to believe we have it in us to be the kind of people we see in the shows,” she continued.

“That as a species we have it in us to be as good as we can be… we just need to decide to get there and as David said, one person at a time.”

Star Trek Discovery returns for Season 5 in 2023 on CTV Sci-Fi Channel , CTV.ca/Sci-Fi and the CTV app on Android  and  iOS . You can also stream episodes on-demand on Crave  and check out exclusive extras on CTV.ca and the CTV app.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 episode 5: Release date and time, where to watch, and more

I n Episode 4 of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, titled Face the Strange , the Discovery crew finds themselves stuck in a time loop due to a time-distorting bug placed on the ship. This episode sees Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner, along with Stamets, navigate through various pivotal moments from the ship's past.

Thereafter, the time loop sends them through events such as the ship's battle with the AI Control, its journey through the wormhole to the 32nd century, and its initial construction. As they relive these moments, Burnham needs to convince her past self and the crew of her identity to garner their assistance in resolving the crisis.

The episode emphasizes emotional bonds and trust, with Rayner learning the importance of these qualities through their time-travel adventures. This installment serves both as a reflection on how far the characters, especially Burnham, have come and as a device to deepen the emotional connections among the crew. Now, the next episode of the show, Episode 5, will be released on April 25, 2024.

When will Star Trek: Discovery season 5 Episode 5 come out?

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5, titled Mirrors , will be released on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 12 a.m. PT . Below is the release schedule for the episode across all time zones:

Viewers in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria can stream Seasons 2 and 3 on Pluto TV's Star Trek channel. In Canada, Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel airs the series, also available on SkyShowtime.

What can fans expect from Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5?

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 Episode 5 is written by Carlos Cisco and Johanna Lee and follows closely on the events of Episode 4. Fans can expect Commander Michael Burnham to delve deeper into the mysterious trail linked to M'ak's spaceship, which could reveal significant developments.

Furthermore, the episode will also potentially resolve the fate of the dealer involved in the platinum poison plot from the previous episode. This episode marks the midpoint of the season, with five more episodes to follow, promising more twists and intense story arcs.

Additionally, the official synopsis of this finale season (5) reads as follows:

"Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS All Access, the story of "Star Trek: Discovery" begins roughly a decade before Captain Kirk's five-year mission -- as portrayed in the original "Star Trek" from the 1960s -- and a century before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise."

It further states:

The series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they encounter new worlds and civilizations, delving into familiar themes and expanding upon an incident that has been talked about within the franchise's universe, but never fully explored."

With episode 5 releasing, it'll be intriguing to witness how the season will shape as a series finale .

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 3 'Jinaal' is a slow but steady affair

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 3

The latest installment of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5 on Paramount Plus adds a little water – and possibly some fertilizer – to the various different story seeds sewn last week.

Entitled "Jinaal," the primary plot revolves around a revisit to the planet Trill and as you may recall, the last time we spent any length of time here was the episode " Forget Me Not " (S03, E04), which was not terrible. In fact, it was undeniable highlight of the third season, which itself had some of the best we've seen from "Discovery." Incidentally, that was first look at the Trill homeworld since " Star Trek: Deep Space Nine " episode "Equilibrium" (bizarrely, also S03, E04). (If you need a recap on how to watch Star Trek: Discovery, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus .)

Curiously, in that episode "Forget Me Not," Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) was given a rare and welcome chance to shine and he does so once again in this episode as well. To briefly recap, Adira (Blu del Barrio) and her lover, a Trill named Gray (Ian Alexander), were aboard a generation ship way back when. They were both orphans, very much in love, and Gray had just received his symbiote when the ship was struck by an asteroid and everyone was ordered to evacuate. Unfortunately, Gray was fatally injured and the only way to save the symbiote was for Adira to join with it. And that's how it was for all of season three right up until the fourth season episode " Choose To Live " (S04, E03).

Then, after all of that, Gray Tal has his consciousness transferred out of Adira and into an artificial synth golem before heading back to Trill to complete all that monk-style studying. And now you're all caught up.

All this has happened before and all of it will happen again. And by the way, Captain Burnham is a Cylon…

While a trip back to Trill is nice, you can't help but start to wonder if this fifth and final season will end up a 10-episode long epilogue as it ties up all its loose ends, almost like season five of " Babylon 5 ."  Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) pops up in this episode at last, which more or less just leaves Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril), whom we last saw in the episode " Rubicon " S04, E09, to make an appearance. Although Ancheril's IMDb page does currently say, "Coming up in 2024, Rachael will be seen again in 'Chucky' season three [and] 'Star Trek Discovery' for its final season," so who knows.

The big highlight this week was, as we alluded to above, Cruz's chance to stretch his acting chops just a little bit and he does not disappoint. The two biggest grumbles however, are the dialogue written by a writer who just saw "Lethal Weapon II" for the very first time and that the notion of teleporting around the place instead of just walking, has been taken to ludicrous extremes.

"Star Trek: Discovery" seems to be at peace with lifting from other IPs, sci-fi or otherwise. We've seen a nice " Close Encounters of the Third Kind " reference with mashed potato and we've even seen a fun nod to "Scooby-Doo," but these were all subtle. Then there was the extremely unsubtle " Die Hard " thing and then in " Scavengers " (S03, E06) the writers went  way  beyond homage and practically lifted a set piece directly from the 1987 movie "The Running Man." The premise was the same, the effect was the same and even the setting was practically identical.

This week's insight into what classic movie the Gen-Z writers of "Discovery" have recently discovered comes from a legendary scene with equally legendary dialogue between Sgt. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Sgt. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) during a rescue attempt after the latter learns that the toilet he's been sitting on has been rigged with a bomb in the first "Lethal Weapon" sequel. Lest we forget, this underrated action extravaganza also gave us Leo Getz and immortalized phrases like "diplomatik immunitee." and "but, but...you're blick."

Still, at least it was just a line or two of dialogue this time and not an entire set piece. My other main grumble with this episode as we mentioned above is the carefree abandon with which transporters are used. And I've touched upon this before. Despite beaming becoming a very common part of everyday life of the 32nd century, to the extent that folk use transporters instead of stairs and even to just change outfits, like we saw in the season four premiere episode — but the thing is, transporters kill you .

The creators of " Star Trek " have never officially confirmed that transporters kill you. However, solely based on the science, transporters do kill you. In simple terms, these teleportation devices scan every molecule in your body and briefly store them in the pattern buffer, while at the same time, the original body is to all intents and purposes, disintegrated. The transporter then converts the scanned copy into energy and beams the data stream to the desired location, where the body is rebuilt, from a sub-atomic level, using technology similar to a replicator. It's comparable in principle to a fax, except this fax machine destroys the original, to prevent duplication, although that has been known to happen.

The issue is essentially an existential one. Since our bodies are made up of identifiable matter, why won't transference of consciousness occur? What makes our consciousness so unique? What's the difference between an identical copy and you? If you were to put your copy into a different room that you hadn't been into, would you be able to see it? No. It's a perfect copy, but it's not you. There is a good article on Ars Technica that really goes into detail on this.

Still, all of this banter aside, this episode is not ... terrible. It is very evenly paced and that, despite the not-exactly edge-of-seat storyline, makes it bearable. Every sub-story seems to be given equal time and brief-but-enjoyable interplay between Lt. Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is fun. Plus, of course, we get to see the Trill homeworld again, which is nice.

In other "Star Trek" news, " Strange New Worlds " has been renewed for a fourth season, while " Lower Decks " will end with its previously announced upcoming fifth season, expected to air sometime this year. Creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman posted a statement on the Star Trek website: “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we've built, and more than anything we all love, love, love Star Trek."

Where once there were four shows airing simultaneously, now there is only one left,

Meanwhile, "Strange New Worlds" is currently in production on its third season, which is set to debut in 2025. It seems that all of this combined with the fact that "Section 31" ended up as a movie , casts doubt over the future of the Starfleet Academy spin-off and hopefully signals the end of the idiotic idea of "Star Trek: Legacy." Perhaps Paramount should look to cancel other ludicrous endeavors like the proposed Picard movie instead of cancelling decent shows in their efforts to tighten purse strings.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

Paramount+ is adding its “ Star Trek ” titles to the Canadian version of the streaming service. The company confirmed it is the new streaming home to more than 800 episodes of the iconic TV franchise, as well as 12 feature films.

As of Aug. 1, Paramount+ hosts the first season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” as well as all episodes to date of Season 2. However, new episodes will continue to air on CTV Sci-Fi Channel Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Popular on Variety

The announcements come in conjunction with the fan-forward events at Toronto’s Fan Expo in late August as well as exclusive screenings planned in Vancouver and Calgary on Star Trek Day on Sept. 8.

“’’Star Trek’ is one of the most iconic TV brands in the world,” Katrina Kowalski, vice president of content at Paramount+ and Pluto TV Canada, said in a statement. “In the decades since the first series premiered in 1966, the franchise has evolved, growing and inspiring its audience with expansive storytelling and a diverse cast of characters. We are so thrilled Paramount+ is now the Canadian streaming destination for the catalogue.”

Previously, “Strange New Worlds,” “Star Trek: Prodigy,” “Discovery,” “Picard” and “The Next Generation” were available to stream on Bell Media’s streaming service, Crave. New episodes of “Picard” and “Discovery” also aired on CTV Sci-Fi Channel.

The fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” will only be available on CTV Sci-Fi, and not Crave, when it returns to television.

The “Star Trek” licensing shift comes on the heels of Crave’s overall deal with Showtime ending in December 2022. (Paramount Global owns both Showtime and Paramount+). At the time, library properties such as “Dexter” and “The Affair” shifted to Paramount+.

Bell Media previously confirmed future Showtime programming will stream on Paramount+ in Canada, however new seasons of Showtime series that are already available on Crave and are in production (such as “Billions” and “Yellowjackets”) will continue to be available on Crave.

How to Watch Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Online from Anywhere

Star Trek Discovery S5

Star Trek: Discovery is ready to launch the U.S.S Discovery into the crew’s last epic adventure across the galaxy. Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 premieres on Thursday, April 4, 2024 , on CBS and fuboTV in the US, CTV Sci-fi Channel, CTV.ca, and The CTV app in Canada, and Paramount Plus in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and more.

However, these services are geo-restricted. For instance, you cannot watch Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount Plus if you travel or live in some countries because the service can read its user’s physical location via their IP addresses and displays an error message in blocked areas. But there is a simple way to overcome this small setback.

A VPN is a legal way to circumvent the geo-restrictions and stream Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 from anywhere by making you appear in the US. You can easily achieve this once you run the VPN app using a US server on your device. This step changes your IP address to match a US one and removes the error.

That said, let's see when, where, and how to watch Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 online from anywhere in the world. We'll also discuss the series preview, why you need a VPN, the episode release schedule, the cast, the trailer, and more.

  • How to Watch Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Online With a VPN

You can watch Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 online on Paramount+ with a VPN connected to a US server. Here’s how to do this:

  • Download and install the VPN app on your device.
  • Launch and switch on the VPN using a US server.
  • Access Paramount Plus and start streaming.

You need a VPN to watch Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 because the new season is available on Paramount Plus in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, South Korea, Latin America, Germany, France, Italy, and Austria.

Trying to watch Paramount Plus in blocked areas without employing a VPN triggers an error message that reads: " Paramount+ is available in select markets. Content varies by region and is subject to change . "

Paramount+ Geo Block

A VPN circumvents the geo-blockade and removes any error message. It’s really easy to achieve this, as you only need to turn on the VPN app on your device using a server from a territory where the streaming platform works. You can choose a US server to make it seem like you are in America by changing your IP address to a US one, which enables you to stream Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 anywhere in the world.

NordVPN is one of the best VPNs . We strongly recommend using it to unblock Paramount Plus, fuboTV, CTV, the CBS website, and all live TV and streaming services.

6,300+ servers in 111 countries. Easily unblock services, Fast and stable connection, No logs, No bandwidth limits, Military-grade encryption, 24/7 live chat support, and 30-day money-back guarantee.

  • Where to Watch Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Stuck in a Loop: The Best of Star Trek's Time-Jumping Episodes

From The Next Generation to Discovery, going around and around is sometimes very revealing.

Stylized graphic illustration of an arrow with Deltas on both ends swirling around several clocks

StarTrek.com

In the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 episode, " Face the Strange ," Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner find themselves both stuck in a loop, but also, jumping all around the timeline of the titular starship. From the point before the U.S.S. Discovery was launched, to pivotal moments in Season 4, Season 3, Season 2 and even very early in Season 1, Rayner notes at one point that, "We’ve gone back in time to when you went forward to the future. That’s a little confusing."

Throughout all of Star Trek 's history, time travel has been just as propulsive to the narratives as space travel. But, within the various time travel stories of Trek , there is a special kind of time-skipping episode — the time loop story. Discovery has recently shaken-up this formula with "Face the Strange," but many elements of this episode pay homage to a proud Star Trek tradition. Here’s the history of the best time loop, and time-jumping episodes across the entire Final Frontier.

" Cause and Effect ," Star Trek: The Next Generation (Season 5, Episode 18)

Data, Riker, Worf, and Crusher play poker in crew quarters in 'Cause and Effect'

"Cause and Effect"

Perhaps one of the greatest science fiction episodes of all time, The Next Generation set the gold-standard for how to do time loop episodes.

When the Enterprise collides with another starship in the first scene, this episode poses one question right off the bat: What happens after you blow up the ship — and everyone on it — before the credits roll? The answer is mostly connected to whether or not we can even remember when we're stuck in a loop. Without actually spoiling this classic episode, let's just say thank the stars for Dr. Crusher and Data.

The brilliance of "Cause and Effect" cannot be overstated, but the 21st Century legacy of this episode is utterly appropriate. When Geordi reveals how the time loop works, Riker says, "You mean we could have come into this room, sat at this table and had this conversation a dozen times already?" This scene has become a popular meme format across various social media platforms, satirizing the time loop of some aspects of the internet experience.

" Parallels ," Star Trek: The Next Generation (Season 7, Episode 11)

Worf holds Deanna Troi in a warm embrace as he rests gently on her head in 'Parallels'

"Parallels"

Arguably, when Worf starts slipping between realities in "Parallels," the story is more focused on other dimensions, rather than a true time loop. But, each time he pops into a new reality, Worf does tend to reply to his own personal log, which is what began the episode.

Obviously, in each new timeline, Worf's personal log is different, and because he checks it so often in the episode, this gives "Parallels" the feeling of a time loop story, even though Worf is technically moving both forward in time, and also, side-to-side.

On top of all of this, "Parallels" feels time-loopy because so many ideas and plot points from previous seasons of The Next Generation are revisited here. From references to " The Best of Both Worlds ," to the return of Wesley Crusher, "Parallels" brings all the good things of TNG back around again for another look, from a different point of view.

" All Good Things... ," Star Trek: The Next Generation (Season 7, Episode 25)

Close-up of Future Jean-Luc Picard aboard the U.S.S. Pasteur with Dr. Beverly Crusher in command of the starship in 'All Good Things...'

"All Good Things..."

Speaking of the best of The Next Generation , the immortal series finale is, from a certain point of view, one big time loop. As Jean-Luc Picard shifts between past, present, and future, the biggest mystery of "All Good Things…" is what caused the anomaly in the Devron system? Eventually, we learn that the ending and the beginning of this story are inextricably connected, a paradox that creates a kind of loop that must be broken.

Twenty-nine years later, in the Star Trek: Picard episode, " Imposters ," Captain Liam Shaw references this moment, and notes that Picard and Riker have a "real chicken and egg thing going on." It doesn’t get any more time-loopy than that!

" Visionary ," Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Season 3, Episode 17)

Standing on the promenade with Quark, Chief O'Brien looks across the way and sees himself staring back at him in 'Visionary'

"Visionary"

When O'Brien starts seeing another version of himself appearing randomly throughout the station, Dr. Bashir briefly floats the idea that he's just having really boring hallucinations. But, as the episode goes on, it becomes clear that O'Brien is actually seeing brief moments in the future, and then, catching up to those moments in the present.

"Visionary" messes with what we expect from a time loop episode, because in all instances of future occurrences, there are literally two O'Briens present, and, when the past O'Brien catches up to the future moment, the duplication effect happens again, creating a kind of visual loop for the audience. The funny thing is, in several instances, the future doesn't play out exactly the way past O'Brien saw the first time, making this one of the wobblier time loops in all of Star Trek .

" Relativity ," Star Trek: Voyager (Season 5, Episode 24)

Seven of Nine stands on the bridge of Voyager. Her Borg implants are gone, and she is wearing a Starfleet uniform in 'Relativity'

"Relativity"

In a move very similar to Discovery 's "Face the Strange," this unforgettable episode of Voyager briefly takes us back to a point before the series even begins, showing us Janeway's first moments on Voyager before the ship left the Utopia Planitia Shipyards on Mars. (In "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner see Discovery in a drydock on Earth well before the events of Season 1.)

But, Voyager 's jaunt into its own prehistory is just the beginning of a very specific type of time jumping episode. Here, Seven of Nine isn't exactly repeating a loop, but, making several attempts at different times, to prevent a bomb from destroying Voyager . As Tuvok aptly puts it when encountering one version of Seven from the future, "Like many time paradoxes, it's improbable, but not necessarily illogical." Because this episode features multiple versions of Seven, and leaps to various eras of Voyager , it pairs very nicely with Burnham and Rayner's similar jumps in "Face the Strange." Especially the moment where Seven meets herself.

" Shattered ," Star Trek: Voyager (Season 7, Episode 11)

In Engineering, both Chakotay and Janeway with tactical supplies strapped to their bodies look into each other's faces as they shake hands in 'Shattered'

"Shattered"

Does Voyager have the best timey-wimey episodes in all of the Trek franchise? It's hard to say, but if there's another Trek episode that feels like an older sibling of Discovery 's "Face the Strange," it's almost certainly "Shattered," a fan-favorite episode from Voyager 's final season. Here, the captain and the first officer — Janeway and Chakotay — find themselves on a version of the ship that has been split into different time periods.

"Shattered" is one of Star Trek 's greatest retrospective episodes, touching on moments across all of Voyager 's story, and teaming past versions of characters with ones closer to the present. It's a touching story, and, structurally, it's wonderfully homaged in Discovery .

" Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ," Star Trek: Discovery (Season 1, Episode 7)

Harry Mudd forces Paul Stamets and Michael Burnham down the Discovery hallway as he trails behind them holding them at phaser gunpoint in 'Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad'

"Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad"

One of Discovery 's stand-out moments from Season 1 fully set the stage for "Face the Strange" in Season 5. In "Magic to Make The Sanest Man Go Mad," Harry Mudd sets the ship on a true time loop, in which only Stamets can truly remember what is going on. Like in "Face the Strange," Stamets has a perception that exists outside of time, thanks to taking on the Tardigrade DNA in "Choose Your Pain."

This detail comes in handy in "Face the Strange," where Burnham and Stamets again have to re-team to get Discovery out of a time loop caused by nefarious enemies using time travel technology as a weapon. In Season 1, Burnham and Stamets barely knew each other, much like Burnham and Rayner's relationship in Season 5. But, if there's one thing a time loop or time-jumping episode can do, it’s make people who are just colleagues into best friends for life.

Star Trek Shows Exiting Crave Streaming In Canada, Will Continue Broadcasting On CTV Sci-Fi

| July 3, 2023 | By: Anthony Pascale 30 comments so far

Things are about to change for how fans watch in Canada as Star Trek shows will be leaving the Crave streaming service over the coming months. However, CTV Sci-Fi will continue to broadcast Star Trek in Canada.

Star Trek leaving Crave in Canada

Since the launch of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, CBS (now Paramount) has partnered with Bell Media to distribute all of the new Star Trek shows in Canada, both live-action and animated. On the same day as they appear on Paramount+ in the USA, they are broadcast on CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly the Space Channel) and become available on Bell’s Crave streaming service the next day. Crave maintains a library of the new Star Trek shows along with the legacy shows; however, that will all come to an end this summer.

Crave has confirmed with TrekMovie that it will “phase out” Star Trek content as of August 1st, including the legacy shows. In fact, subscribers can already see warnings within Crave about the different shows leaving between July 24 and July 31. The one exception is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is currently running its second season. Bell Media has confirmed that Strange New Worlds will be available to stream on Crave until the fall.

It isn’t known where Canadians will be able to go to stream Star Trek content after they exit Crave, but the shows will likely become available on Paramount+ in Canada, which is currently the only international instance of Paramount+ without original Star Trek content. However, Paramount+ has not yet commented on these changes in Canada, but it would fit a pattern that began earlier this year when a number of Showtime series exited Crave only to become available on Paramouint+ Canada .

So Strange New Worlds season 2 will be the end of Star Trek on Crave. Here is a Crave promo for season 2 from the spring.

Trek still broadcasting on CTV Sci-Fi

Even though Crave will no longer stream Star Trek shows, Bell Media will still broadcast them in Canada. According to a spokesperson from Bell:

Our licensing agreement to deliver Star Trek titles on Crave has changed. However, CTV Sci-Fi continues to be the exclusive Canadian broadcast home of Star Trek, and this content will continue to live on CTV.ca and the CTV app.

Bell Media also confirmed CTV Sci-Fi subscribers will continue to have access to all episodes of Strange New Worlds , Discovery , Picard , Lower Decks , and Prodigy via CTV.ca and the CTV app.

You can see a promo from CTV Sci-Fi for Strange New Worlds below.

TrekMovie will provide an update when more is known about what’s next for streaming Star Trek in Canada.

Actor Talks “Authentic” Scotty On ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’; Season 3 Production Passes Milestone

I am one sad Canadian Trekkie. I will say however that Netflix Canada still has all the legacy Trek shows (minus TAS). So there is that.

This is probably fallout fom the bridge incident. There’s a lot of media pressure on Paramount right now to protest your lack of security up there.

What bridge incident?

Jeez, that was a softball over the plate. :-))

Exactly, I was expecting a curve ball… I was caught looking.

Said no one in the Padres bullpen this year.

Those dastardly Romulans are always messing up our streaming options up here

Ah. Just got it. Never mind, move along, nothing to see here…

Paramount is such an absolute mess of a company.

They must be relieved Warner Bros Discovery are an even bigger one to deflect attention!

Is CTV Sci-fi commercial free?

Other than for Discovery, Star Trek never left Netflix in Latinoamerica. Given how it’s vanishing from Paramount+ and other services in other countries, hopefully it never will.

It does not matter to me because I always PVR the new Star Trek shows.

Physical media FTW

Shenanigans like this are why I swear by physical media.

In this case, for tv shows, you’ll have to wait for the physical media to be released and hope in the mean time nothing is spoiled. I liked seeing it each week when a new episode is released. At the moment I don’t have Crave, but was really considering it, but I think this nixed it. :-/

It was only ever a matter of time before the streaming rights reverted to Paramount+ plus here in Canada — so this is no surprise. I’ve expected it for a long time. It sucks, though. Crave isn’t a great app, but it has a lot of other stuff that I watch…

Man, this is disappointing. Even though Crave has pretty much the worst app/interface, I won’t be getting Paramount+ just for new Star Trek. Canadian streaming options are such a mess. At least Netflix still has classic Trek shows for a quick watch.

Looks like I’ll be canceling Crave when this season of SNW ends. Star Trek is the only reason I have Crave at this point.

Trek was originally on Paramount+ Canada then Bell threatened legal action and it was gone. I was about to cancel my P+ but if Star Trek is finally coming back home I’m keeping it. Crave is overpriced garbage.

I dislike Crave and detest Bell, so will be happy if it all moves to P+ (which I have for all the Yellowstone stuff).

I pay my crave only for thetreks :(

Weird since paramount just removed all the trek movie 2-3 months ago so very inconsistant

The message on the show pages that said the shows were leaving Crave in July is now gone. This is very confusing.

I never subscribed to Crave and always watch on the CTV Sci-Fi channel so this does not immediately affect my viewing of Star Trek. That said, I am concerned that this the first step to making it available only on Paramount+ in Canada instead of Bell media’s cable specialty Sci-Fi channel. We shall see!

There is an over-saturation of streaming services out there. After you pay for Disney+, Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, etc… it ends up costing you so much money. I don’t subscribe to Crave, I am watching on CTV Sci-Fi. I cancelled my Netflix and just have Amazon Prime. It is the same thing that happened in the 90s with all the specialty channels. Remember when TLC was actually the Learning Channel?

I will seriously consider Paramount+ if they add the Star Trek content. Crave is garbage for the cost and Bell is a horrible company.

I was on Crave pretty much because of ST… now i’m 10 episode from DS9 end and it’s gone, so will Crave at the end of this month…

Yeah me too for the new series. I watch DS9, Voy, and the other older ones on Netflix. Once this season of SNW is over so is my crave subscription.

Star trek: discovery season 5, episode 5 ending explained.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 contains two major reveals about the Mirror Universe and the Breen. We break down what the ending means.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Star Trek: Discovery's next clue is hidden aboard the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise trapped in interdimensional space.
  • L'ak is a Breen with a blood bounty on his head, and his backstory with Moll is revealed.
  • The USS Discovery crew, led by Commander Rayner, helps save Burnham and Book and bring the ISS Enterprise into the Prime Universe, but Moll and L'ak escape.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," ends with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery's crew grappling with jaw-dropping reveals about the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise, L'ak's (Elias Toufexis) species, and the next clue in the hunt for the Progenitors' treasure. Written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, the thrilling "Mirrors" sends Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) into interdimensional space after Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak and the third Progenitors' clue , but they found a lot more than they bargained for.

In Star Trek: Discovery s eason 5, episode 5, Captain Burnham, Cleveland Booker, Moll, and L'ak are all trapped aboard the derelict ISS Enterprise after Burnham's shuttle and L'ak's ship are destroyed by interdimensional space, a dangerous region between Star Trek 's Prime and Mirror Universes . Michael ingeniously uses the Enterprise's tractor beam to send a distress signal to the USS Discovery, where Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and the bridge crew find a way to keep the aperture of the interdimensional space wormhole open to fly the ISS Enterprise through. However, L'ak and Moll make their escape, leaving Burnham, Book, and the Starfleet heroes to grapple with the third clue to the Progenitors' treasure, and what they learned and found in the wormhole.

The ISS Enterprise's first and only previous appearance was in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2's "Mirror, Mirror", which introduced the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Captain kirk's mirror universe iss enterprise now belongs to 32nd century starfleet, it's been a long road for the iss enterprise.

The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise becomes the property of the 32nd century's Starfleet and United Federation of Planets at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors." Captain Burnham assigned Lt. Commanders Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) - who don't actually appear in the episode - to fly the ISS Enterprise back to Federation HQ to be put into "storage". However, the acquisition of a major historical find like a 23rd-century Constitution Class starship filled with Terran Empire technology from the Mirror Universe is bound to be of interest to Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg).

After the Temporal Wars, crossing over between the Mirror Universe and Star Trek 's Prime universe is now impossible, but the ISS Enteprise was trapped in interdimensional space for centuries, which crossing over could still happen.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5's ISS Enterprise scenes were filmed on the USS Enterprise sets of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Discovery season 5's production took place at the end of 2022, after Strange New Worlds season 2 had wrapped in June and long before Strange New Worlds season 3 filming started in December 2023. The USS Enterprise's bridge, medical bay, transporter room, and hallways were redressed to turn the starship into its Mirror Universe counterpart.

Commander Michael Burnham previously came aboard Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Star Trek: Discovery's Mirror Universe Revelations

We found out what happened to mirror spock and mirror saru.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5's ISS Enterprise appearance answered some big questions about the events of the Mirror Universe after Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Mirror, Mirror." Cleveland Booker learned from the plaque where the Enterprise's missing crew left their story behind that the Terran High Chancellor was assassinated after making reforms. This refers to the Mirror Universe's Spock (Leonard Nimoy), who was urged by the Prime Universe's Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to make reforms to prevent the inevitable collapse of the Terran Empire, which happened anyway.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Mirror Universe episodes revealed that the Terran Empire, weakened by Spock's reforms, was conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.

Refugees led by a Kelpien slave-turned-rebel leader - Saru (Doug Jones) - used the ISS Enterprise to flee the Mirror Universe for the Prime Universe in the 23rd century, but the starship was trapped in interdimensional space. The Enterprise's crew eventually used the ship's shuttles and escape pods to abandon the starship in an effort to make it to the Prime Universe. Some did make it through, including the ISS Enterprise's junior science officer, Dr. Cho , who later joined Starfleet and became a branch Admiral in the 24th century.

Jinaal Bix redacted the names of the scientists who found the Progenitors' technology, including Dr. Cho.

Moll & L'ak Escaped Discovery With A Breen Bounty On Their Heads

L'ak is the nephew of the breen primarch.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 revealed the backstory of Moll and L'ak, including the revelation that L'ak is Breen . Years before Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Moll was a courier who sold latinum to the Breen Imperium, where she met L'ak, the nephew of the Breen's Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo), who had fallen out of favor and was working in the shuttle bay. Moll and L'ak fell in love , and L'ak committed a crime against the Breen by consorting with "a lesser being" and removing his helmet to show Moll his true face. Confronted by his uncle, L'ak shot the Primarch and fled with Moll.

Moll and L'ak used one of the ISS Enterprise's remaining warp pods to flee capture.

Moll and L'ak both have an Erigah, a Breen blood bounty, on their heads, and they hope that finding the Progenitors' treasure and selling it to the Breen will buy their freedom. Neither Moll and L'ak want the Federation's help offered by Captain Burnham, and they would "rather die" than be separated in a Federation prison. L'ak was injured in a brawl with Burnham, but instead of seeking medical attention from the USS Discovery, Moll and L'ak used one of the ISS Enterprise's remaining warp pods to flee capture. However, this time, Moll and L'ak left behind a warp trail Discovery can follow.

Cleveland Booker Tries To Connect With Moll

Booker's mentor was moll's absentee father.

Cleveland Booker has personal reasons to connect with and save Moll. Moll's real name is Malinne Booker, and she is the daughter of Book's late mentor, Cleveland Booker IV . Moll's father abandoned her and her mother to become a courier and raise the funds needed to move his family to a new home in the Gamma Quadrant. However, Booker IV's dangerous life as a courier and dealings with criminal organizations like the Emerald Chain made him keep his distance from Malinne, who blamed him for leaving her behind.

Moll doesn't want Cleveland Booker in her life.

Moll became a courier like her father to do what he didn't and earn enough latinum to move to the Gamma Quadrant, but Moll's entire world shifted when she fell in love with L'ak and the Breen placed a blood bounty on their head s. Moll doesn't want Cleveland Booker in her life , but she relents when she has the chance to kill the man who took her father's name. Whether Moll will ever come to see Book as the "only family" she has left, the way Book sees her, remains to be seen.

Commander Rayner Got The Best Out Of USS Discovery's Crew

Citrus mash for everyone.

Captain Burnham left Commander Rayner at the conn of the USS Discovery while she and Book went on their away mission, despite Rayner's reservations about leading Burnham's crew. However, Rayner was impressed that Burnhum learned Kellerun literature to connect with her new First Officer. This knowledge was the key to Rayner saving Burnham from interdimensional space. Burnham used the ISS Enterprise's tractor beam to send a signal the Kellerun commander would understand.

Rayner gained a new appreciation for Discovery's crew and how to work with them as his own crew.

Commander Rayner placed his trust in the USS Discovery's crew to "science" a way to open the wormhole's aperture and pull the ISS Enterprise into the Prime Universe. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp). Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio), Lt. Commander Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Lt. Christopher (Orville Cummings), Lt. Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson), Lt. Naya (Victoria Sawal), Lt. Commander Asha (Christina Dixon), and Lt. Gallo (Natalie Liconti) all rose to the occasion and found a way to save Burnham and Book. In turn, Rayner gained a new appreciation for Discovery's crew and how to work with them as his own crew.

Dr. Culber Reaches Out To Tilly

Culber has questions science can't answer.

The USS Discovery's counselor, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), needs a counselor of his own. Culber continues to deal with the unimaginable experience of Trill scientist Jinaal Bix occupying his mind and body in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal." Being taken over by a Trill has left Culber with existential questions, and he hopes finding the Progenitors' technology will provide him with the answers he seeks.

Hugh finds a sympathetic ear in Lt. Sylvia Tilly.

Unfortunately for Hugh, he doesn't believe he can share his feelings with his husband, Commander Paul Stamets because Paul is a man of science, and Culber's questions are ineffable. Hugh finds a sympathetic ear in Lt. Sylvia Tilly, but the answers Dr. Culber seeks are tied to what the USS Discovery finds when they locate the Progenitors' treasure - or so Hugh hopes. Culber, who has already died and been resurrected, may find himself in a new scenario that has pivotal life-or-death decisions in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Dr. Hugh Culber's dilemma in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is a rare attempt by Star Trek to address spiritual questions.

Where Star Trek: Discovery's Next Progenitors' Treasure Clue Leads

The next clue involves water.

Captain Burnham acquired the third clue from Moll and L'ak, which is a vial of water contained within a piece of the Progenitors' treasure map. Burnham is waiting for Commander Stamets to conduct a chemical analysis of the water, which will reveal where the USS Discovery must go next for the 4th clue . However, Michael told Book that Dr. Cho, the former Terran scientist who became a Starfleet Admiral, went back to the ISS Enterprise in interdimensional space and hid her clue to the Progenitors' technology there.

Michael also told Book she saw him in the past during Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange's" time loops, and that they were happy back then.

Burnham and Book mused over the lessons attached to each clue. On Trill, finding Jinaal's clue was dependent on Burnham and Booker proving they value lifeforms other than their own. On Lyrek for the first clue, the lesson was the importance of cultural context. Michael surmised that the lesson Dr. Cho left behind with her clue on the ISS Enterprise was to have the hope to shape your own future in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 as the search for the Progenitors' treasure and the answers to life, itself, continues.

Star Trek's Biggest Badass Reveals His Starship's Secret Name

From The Dark Knight to Discovery , David Ajala is a man of action.

A man stands in front of a vivid alien landscape with purple skies and rocky terrain, leaning on a f...

David Ajala’s journey in the Final Frontier is coming to a close. Although Ajala only joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery in 2020, at the start of Season 3 , it certainly feels like his rugged space courier with a heart of gold — Cleveland “Book” Booker — has been on in the series longer than he really has. As Book, Ajala brought some Indiana Jones swagger to Discovery , albeit with a touch of Gene Roddenberry idealism .

The fifth episode of Discovery’s final season puts Book and Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) into a perilous and very familiar setting, one which connects back to The Original Series, Deep Space Nine , Discovery’s second season, and even Strange New Worlds.

Inverse caught up with Ajala — best known for his roles in The Dark Knight and Supergirl — to get his take on where he’s been, how Star Trek has “blessed” his life, and which franchise he wants to jump to next.

Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery Episode 5, “Mirrors.”

Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) in 'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5.

Book and Burnham fly a shuttle in a new daring mission to...the Enterprise !

While in pursuit of the latest clue to unravel the secret of the Progenitor tech , “Mirrors” leads Captain Burnham and Book into a wormhole where they find the ISS Enterprise NCC-1701, the wicked Mirror Universe version of the classic 23rd century Enterprise from The Original Series and Strange New Worlds. (ISS stands for “Imperial Star Ship.” Whereas USS means “United Star Ship.”) This evil Enterprise first appeared in the 1967 TOS episode “Mirror, Mirror.” But, for the sake of current visual continuity, it’s now clearly a redress of the USS Enterprise set from Strange New Worlds.

“We wrapped shooting before [ Strange New Worlds ] started to commence their next season,” Ajala reveals. “So, sadly, the crossover didn’t happen.” But, Ajala notes that being in the physical sets of the Enterprise sickbay and bridge was a refreshing change from some of his other work in Discovery .

“There is a lot of green screen usually, and you have to tap into your childhood imagination. You’re playing cowboys,” Ajala explains. “But, there was something very, very special about shooting that scene that made it a lot easier for me to act. Part of it was what Sonequa [Martin-Green] was doing. How she held the space in such reverence, how she really channeled into the memory of her brother [Spock]. It was really wonderfully special and the fans are just going to love it.”

When Ajala joined Discovery as Book in 2020, he was probably best known to genre fans for his role as a bounty hunter working for the Joker (Heath Ledger) in The Dark Knight . But, he’s equally recognizable as Manchester Black from CW’s Supergirl . Then again, he was also one of the “Smilers” named Peter in the 2010 Doctor Who episode “The Beast Below.” From Star Trek, and the DCEU to the Whoniverse, that’s a lot of sci-fi geek cred for one man. And now, that Discovery is winding down, Ajala doesn’t mind looking back on his pre-Star Trek work with fondness, and even, a hypothetical part of his future.

AUSTIN, TEXAS - MARCH 10: David Ajala visits the IMDb Portrait Studio at SXSW 2024 on March 10, 2024...

David Ajala in 2024, a man for all seasons, and dimensions.

“There was once upon a time, a possibility. There was a very strong invitation to go back into one of those worlds,” Ajala says cryptically. Does this mean he was almost in the multiverse shenanigans of The Flash ? Another CW Arrowverse show? Even a later episode of Doctor Who ? Ajala can’t say outright, so we’re just guessing. But it seems like it almost happened and could happen again. “The timing didn’t work out,” he says. “If and when that opportunity does present itself, I would gladly take that invitation again.”

Ajala is also open to the idea of tackling franchises he’s never been a part of before. And because he was born in London, his accent does make some wonder if he could be the phantom menace of future James Bond contenders .

“That is a vicious rumor!” Ajala says with a laugh. “But it’s also a massive compliment. In all honesty, it’s a wonderful thought to even entertain the idea of [playing Bond]. My main thing is to always pursue roles that excite me, that turn me on, and that challenge me. Stranger things have happened.”

It’s not hard to see why some folks might think of David Ajala as James Bond material in the 2020s. When he debuted in Discovery Season 3, as Book, he was a space pirate with a heart of gold, a guy whom we believed was poaching alien animals, but, in reality, he’s an empath, bringing space creatures to better homes. But, Book’s also a badass, who had, for two seasons, his own Star Trek version of the Millennium Falcon. Sadly, Book’s sleek scout ship — complete with its morphing tech — was destroyed in Season 4. So, pour one out for... wait. What was Book’s ship called anyway?

“It was called Electric Chocolate ,” Ajala reveals with a grin. “Not many people know that, but I’ll share it with you.” Hopefully, the Star Trek fan wiki, Memory Alpha is paying attention, since, prior to this Book’s ship is referred to, off-screen, as either “the Nautilus” or “Vessel - C.” And, let’s face it, Electric Chocolate sounds way better.

David Ajala at SXSW 2024, flashing a classic “live long and prosper” in support of Star Trek: Discovery .

Still, with or without his cool ship, Book’s story in Star Trek: Discovery will end this year. But, David Ajala’s journey with Star Trek will likely never be over. Recently, he was a part of the 2024 Star Trek Cruise, where he says he was thrilled to connect with Trek actors from the other series. “I got to hang with Michelle Hurd, Anthony Montgomery, and Todd Stashwick ! It was incredible.”

Ajala also says that he will continue to do Star Trek conventions for as long as he can, but that he will probably only select about “three conventions” a year. His reasoning for doing fewer is simply because he wants to be present for the fans when he is there.

“I'd probably choose three a year, but when I'm there, I'm fully there with very healthy energy,” Ajala says. “I think it's just been deeply humbling and special. We're not superheroes. We’re real people. So, I want to be really, really be there, when I’m there. I want to sign however many autographs I need to sign and give as many hugs as I need to.”
